The Colloquium held at Iscor, Pretoria, on 28th June, 1988, had as its objective the need for Quality Management Systems in the industry. Case studies of how problems were identified and solved by the use of such systems were submitted.

This paper presents an initial investigation into the viability of co-kriging the grades of multiple mining cuts in a two dimensional, thin reef scenario. Deposits with gradational mineralized zones, in the perpendicular sense, are not as well served by the use of reef accumulation and thickness as deposits characterized by a sharp distinction between ore and waste rock. South African Bushveld Complex platinum deposits and Witwatersrand gold deposits are examples of this distinction. The calculation of an optimal mining cut is of paramount importance in the mining of Bushveld platinum. Two-dimensional kriging of a constant stoping width mining cut is an effective method for resource calculations once a cut is decided, but this begs the question of how to decide on the cut. Comparison of multiple cuts is used as a way of achieving this decision on many of Anglo Platinum’s operations. Although the kriging of each cut is valid in isolation, occasional negative values occur when incremental grades between overlapping cuts are calculated. Negative incremental grades cannot reflect reality. They are thought to be related to the inability of the method to include the strong continuity in the perpendicular direction demonstrated by the relevant variograms. Co-kriging of related variables has been investigated as a potential means tore impose this inherent order relationship. Various co-kriging options have been investigated. The method has been tested on a real data set from an established platinum operation. One of three types of anomaly has been investigated so far. The results show that co-kriging the mining cut grade as the primary variable, with just one secondary variable, the reef thickness, eliminates most occurrences. Severe anomalies remaining are arguably indicative of population mixing and might be more effectively treated by rezoning the data. Aim—To investigate the viability of co-kriging the grades of multiple mining cuts as a method for resolving anomalies in the estimation of such cuts on Bushveld platinum deposits, with applicability to other thin reef type deposits with a gradational not sharp cut-off between ore and waste in the direction perpendicular to the reef. Outsourcing of specialist and non-continuous services is common practice in international mining operations. There is an increasing trend towards this practice in South Africa as a result of the major organisational changes that have taken place in the industry, and as lower revenues and production cost pressures have reduced profit margins. Many specialist functions have been outsourced in the industry for a long time, an example being shaft sinking, which is undertaken by specialist shaft sinking contractors. In the professional services area, some activities have been outsourced, for example the design and construction supervision of tailings dams, but mining related activities such as geology, mine planning and scheduling, engineering, ventilation, and rock engineering, have traditionally been carried out by in-house staff. In this paper some of the industry problems which have led to an increase in outsourcing of professional services are considered. Then the pros and cons of outsourcing are dealt with before outlining the factors which should be taken into account in choosing an outsourcing partner.

The interest shown in our paper by Drs Schaekers and Dew, and their favourable comments, are appreciated. However, some of their remarks require a response. Stability testing procedures Regarding the issue of stability-testing procedures, we concur that no long-term procedure has been accepted by either environmentalists or the mining/processing industry as a valid method to test the long-term stability of solid wastes. We agree that the method we used is no exception, and we certainly did not claim that it should be recognized as such. What we did attempt to portray was that we had designed the test procedure in an attempt to simulate, at a very small scale, a tailings dam environment.

There is currently limited knowledge concerning South African coal deposits as hosts for rare earth elements (REE). This project aims to determine the concentration of REE, including yttrium and scandium (REY+Sc) in various coal seams and adjacent sediments in borehole cores from the Ermelo, Witbank, and Waterberg coalfields in South Africa. Coal petrography (maceral count and vitrinite reflectance), XRD, XRF, sequential chemical extraction procedure (SCEP) before ICPMS, and mineral liberation analysis (MLA) were conducted on the coal and associated sediment samples. The coals were inertinite-rich, medium-rank bituminous coal, with moderate to high ash content. The two dominant minerals in all the coalfields are kaolinite and quartz, except for sample ZBS2M, where dolomite was dominant. The dominant major oxides are Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, and CaO, which concur with the XRD results. The ICP-MS results following SCEP indicated that both coal and the associated sediments were light REY+Sc dominant. There was also an elevation of medium REY+Sc in the Witbank coal’s associated sediment samples. Notably, the samples with the highest REY+Sc results were the sediment samples. The Waterberg samples had the lowest REY+Sc from both the coal (less than 2 μg/g to 7 μg/g) and associated sediments (2 μg/g to 15 μg/g). While the highest REY+Sc was yielded from the Witbank-associated sediments (500 μg/g to 2,500 μg/g). The carbonate fraction step proved to be the most successful leaching step, as most REY+Sc was recovered in that step for all coalfields. In addition to the carbonate fraction, the silicates and sulfide fraction in the Witbank samples, and the ion-exchangeable fraction for the Waterbergassociated sediments samples proved successful in leaching out the REY+Sc. MLA determined that monazite and xenotime in all the coal samples were the REY+Sc-bearing minerals.

The DEEPMINE Collaborative Research Programme was established to create the technological and human resources platform that would make it possible to mine gold safely and profitably at depths of 3 to 5 km. The DEEPMINE Programme has four goals: to acquire knowledge of and develop appropriate technology for new ultra-deep level mines, to stimulate education and training, to establish a culture of innovation, and to encourage rapid technology transfer and implementation. The research programme was launched in July1998 and will be completed in March 2002, with the final year focusing on the transfer of knowledge to the industrial partners. DEEPMINE represents a new model for conducting mining research: it is driven by industry needs; emphasizes collaboration between industrial partners, research organizations and tertiary education institutions; and has a novel joint-funding mechanism. DEEPMINE has employed a range of vehicles to transfer knowledge to its industrial partners. Novel aspects include: (a) electronic publication of Summary Reports and Guideline Handbooks that seek to consolidate the huge body of knowledge comprehensively and concisely, (b) a series of DEEPMINE Schools designed to enable industry practitioners to apply the knowledge to their current work situation, and (c) Consultancy Reviews, where DEEPMINE specialists seek to apply knowledge to specific real problems on mines.

A running facebreak ahead of the powered support units occurred on the number 4 seam at Matla Coal’s number 3 shaft (Matla 3) in April and May 2002.Very difficult mining conditions were experienced for a distance of some 150 m in the tailgate and to a lesser extent on the face itself. The paper analyses the main causes for the high stress conditions leading to the facebreak, namely, the existence of a >20 m dolerite sill close to surface and the effect of stopping longwalling on the overlying 5 seam. Difficulties experienced during the facebreak are discussed, including, pillar and roof collapses in the tailgate, high stress areas ahead of the face causing roof and sidewall stability problems, flushing of broken rock into the face area at the tailgate, secondary mid-face breaks, and the availability of critical support units. Successful rock engineering interventions and learning points were that, a goaf angle of 14.6° was found to be more realistic than the previously used 20 to 25° in predicting dolerite sill behaviour in this area, pre-split blasting of the sill significantly reduced stress on the face and tailgate allowing re-support work to proceed, varying pillar support types were analysed and rated, the need to always have a ground control “First Aid” kit available was recognised and a strategy for subsequent panels beneath the sill was developed. Numerous support units were used and the performance of the more suitable types is briefly discussed. L’étude présente analyse les raison majeures pour les conditions de grandes contraintes qui ont conduit à la cassure de taille, à savoir l’existence d’un mur de dolérite de >20m proche de la surface et l’effet d’arrêter la longue taille sur la veine 5 superposée. Les difficultés rencontrées pendant la cassure de taille sont rapportées, y compris les effondrements de piliers et toit dans la voie de tête, les aires de grandes contraintes en avant du front de taille causant des problèmes de stabilité pour le toit et les parois latérales, l’injection de roches cassées dans la taille en voie de tête, les cassures secondaires à mi-taille, et la disponibilité d’unités de soutènement critiques. A deposit to be mined by underground methods can be accessed by a number of methods: ? Adit ? Decline or ramp ? Inclined shaft ? Vertical shaft. Adits are an economical approach when the orebody is above the general floor elevation i.e. suitable in hilly or mountainous terrain. Incline shafts are limited to relatively shallow deposits, and because they are developed on an incline, development lengths for a given depth are the three to five times longer than for a vertical shaft. Vertical shafts are the preferred method for deposits deeper than 300 m but the development rate is slow and construction costs are very high. Declines or ramps offer early access to shallow deposits, which develops the ore body expediently, but are generally developed at a gradient of approximately 12 per cent. Decline haulages have become an attractive alternative to shaft hoisting, and over recent years the role of decline access has become more widespread throughout South Africa. Traditionally, South Africa has enjoyed the use of shaft systems, largely due to the large knowledge base of mining the Witwatersrand Basin, where vertical and inclined shafts were the norm. South Africa has also had the advantage of cheap electricity, giving shafts a definite economic advantage. However, in recent years the national power utility ESKOM has undergone an expansion programme that has led to tariff increases of nearly 100% over a three-year period. Based on the changes in electricity tariffs and technological improvements to underground haulage trucks, the economic inputs to access development have changed. This paper reviews mine access for shallow deposits as currently applied in South Africa. Based on current economic inputs, the paper investigates at what point a vertical shaft would be more economical than a decline system utilizing typical South African mining equipment.

ABSTRACT: It is well known in underground mining and waste disposal that the development of excavation damaged zones (EDZ), and thus, hydraulic pathways, is closely related to the excess in the corresponding damage boundary (= long-term strength) of the rock mass and the resulting damage. By integrating short-term and long-term strength, dilatancy, damage and healing into the newly extended Hou/Lux constitutive model for rock salt, it is possible to treat the tertiary creep, to identify the EDZ around underground facilities and to predict the time-dependent development of the EDZ in rock salt. Under in-situ conditions, the EDZ of a 37-year-old drift at the Sondershausen salt mine and the EDZ around a drift dam in rock salt are numerically examined. The numerical analysis gives satisfactory results. RÉSUMÉ: Dans les exploitations minières et le stockage souterrain des déchets, le développement des zones endommagées et fracturées (EDZ – excavation damaged zone), créant des chemins préférentiels pour écoulement, est étroitement lié au contexte géotechnique et à la méthode d’excavation. En intégrant la résistance court et long terme, la dilatance, l’endommagement et le colmatage, le nouveau modèle rhéologique Hou/Lux pour le sel gemme est capable de traiter le fluage tertiaire, d’évaluer l’extension de l’EDZ et de prédire l’évolution de EDZ dans temps autour des ouvrages creusés dans le sel gemme. L’EDZ d’une galerie datée de 37 ans dans la mine de sel de Sondershausen et les EDZ autour de barrage des galeries dans un sel gemme ont été modélisées. Les résultats numériques fournissent des résultats satisfaisants. ZUSAMENFASSUNG: Bekanntlich ist die Entstehung von Auflockerungszonen und damit hydraulischen Wegsamkeiten in der unmittelbaren Umgebung um bergmännische Hohlräume mit der Überschreitung der entsprechenden Schädigungsgrenze eng verbunden. Unter Berücksichtigung der Bruchfestigkeit, Schädigungsgrenze, Dilatanz, Schädigung und Verheilung kann das Stoffmodell Hou/Lux das Verhalten des tertiären Kriechens beschreiben, die Auflockerungszone im Salzgebirge ermitteln und ihre zeitabhängige Ausdehnung vorausberechnen. Mit diesem Stoffmodell werden die Auflockerungszonen einer 37jährigen Strecke in der Salzgrube Sondershausen und die Auflockerungszonen um ein exemplarisches Abdichtungsbauwerk im Salzgebirge numerisch untersucht. Dabei werden zufriedenstellende Berechnungsergebnisse erzielt.

Historically, linear and lognormal krigings were first created to estimate the in situ mineral resources of blocks. Nonlinear geostatistics and indicator kriging were subsequently developed to evaluate also the portion recovered when applying a cut-off on selective mining units (SMUs) within blocks. In practice these methods are generally based either on the Gaussian model with a transformation generalizing the lognormal case or on the indicators above cut-offs. Very often the indicator approach is simplified by kriging separately each indicator, and when starting from a continuous variable, a practical advantage of the discretization into classes lies in the easy treatment of a zero effect and of the high values. However, a number of so-called isofactorial models have also been developed for a discrete or continuous variable, where the full cokriging of indicators (i.e. disjunctive kriging) simplifies to the separate kriging of factors. Moreover, these models are equipped with a change of support, allowing a consistent estimation of recoverable resources on SMUs. Min-Max Autocorrelation Factors (MAF) analysis of the indicators offers a new approach for indicator modelling. In particular the first factor, the one with the highest spatial continuity, can help in choosing the type of model. For example a monotonic experimental first factor can be used directly as the basis of a discrete diffusion model, unless a continuous diffusion model such as the Gaussian model can be used on the original variable. This approach is illustrated on a uranium deposit mined selectively: estimates of recoverable resources by discrete disjunctive kriging and uniform conditioning in a Gaussian model are compared locally to short-term estimates based on two areas densely drilled.

Mr C J C Janse van Vuuren was educated at Klerksdorp High School, Pretoria Technical Colege, the University of Pretoria, and Unisa. He holds the folowing degrees: BSc (I&S), BSc Hons (Met Pta), ND (Met Tech), AEP (Unisa). Prof. R F Sandenbergh was educated at the Afrikaanse Hoerskool Germiston and the University of Pretoria. He holds the degrees of B Ing (Chem), M Ing (Chem), and D Ing (Metal). President's Award Professor Jannie van Deventer, Head of the Department of Metalurgical Engineering at the University of Stelenbosch, has been honoured with one of the five President's Awards for 1990. These awards are made by the CSIR's Foundation for Research Development. G R Bozzoli Awards* Prof. Alan Kemp, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, has appealed to industry not to cut bursary funding during recessionary times.

A portable, stand-alone instrument especially designed for recording strong ground motion was used in this study to create a large database of peak particle velocities measured underground. A total number of 39 sites located in stopes mining Carbon Leader and Ventersdorp Contact Reefs were investigated. Peak particle velocities whith values up to 3 m/s were recorded at some sites. The data recorded on the skin of the excavations were compared to the data recorded by the mine seismic networks to determine the site response. The maximum site response was obtained for source radii of between 5 m and 30 m and events locating within 200 m of the site. The extreme values of peak particle velocities were obtained in cases were the face-area lay within the source radius. Un instrument portable unique spécifiquement conçu pour enregistrer les mouvements dynamiques des terrains, a été utilisé dans cette étude pour créer une base de données importante sur la vélocité maximum des particules, mesurée en souterrain. Un nombre total de 39 sites situés dans les excavations exploitant les récifs appelés ‘Carbon Leader et Ventersdorp Contact Reefs’, a été investigué. Une vélocité maximale avec des valeurs allant jusqu’ à 3 m/s a été enregistrée sur certains sites. Les données enregistrées sur le bord de l’excavation ont été comparées aux données enregistrées par les réseaux séismiques de la mine pour déterminer la réponse du site. La réponse maximum du site a été obtenue pour des sources de rayons entre 5 m et 30 m et des évènements situés dans les 200 m du site. Les valeurs extrêmes de vélocités maximales ont été obtenues pour les cas où la zone de face se trouve à l’intérieur du rayon de la source. Ein mobiles, alleinstehendes Instrument, speziell entworfen um starke Formationsbewegungen aufzuzeichnen, wurde in dieser Studie verwendet um eine große Datenbank von Partikelspitzengeschwindigkeiten, die Untertage gemessen wurden, aufzuzeichnen. Eine Gesamtanzahl von 39 Aufstellungsorten in den Schichtabbauorten vom Carbon Leader und Ventersdorp Contact Reef wurden untersucht. Partikelspitzengeschwindigkeiten mit Werten bis zu 3 m/s wurden an einigen Standorten aufgezeichnet Die an der Oberfläche des Grubenraumes aufgezeichneten Daten wurden mit jenen Daten verglichen, die vom seismischen Netzwerk der Grube notiert wurden, um die örtliche Reaktion des Standortes zu bestimmen. Die maximale Standortreaktion wurde für Ursprungsradien von zwischen 5 m und 30 m erhalten und Ereignissen die sich innerhalb von 200 m vom Standort befanden. Die extremen Werte der Partikelhöchstgeschwindigkeiten wurdenin jenen Fällen erreicht wo sich der Abbaubereich innerhalb des Ursprungsradiuses befand.

Previous fundamental research projects have indicated the value of continuous closure measurements in deep tabular excavations for improved support design, hazard assessment and for quantifying the effect of seismicity on stope closure. This paper describes further measurements in a VCR stope to validate some of the earlier findings. Calculation of the closure ratio showed that it is a good measure to identify different ground conditions and possible hazards. This work was supported by numerical modelling results, which showed that the closure ratio is very useful in discriminating the response of different geotechnical environments. Des projets précédents de recherche fondamentale ont démontré la valeur de mesures continues de fermeture dans le cas de profondes excavations tabulaires pour une conception améliorée du soutien, de l’évaluation du danger et pour quantifier l’effet de la séismicité sur l'affaissement du toit d’un chantier d’abattage. Le présent document décrit d’autres mesures dans un chantier d’abattage VCR afin de valider certaines des conclusions précédemment formulées. Le calcul du degré d'affaissement montre qu’il y va de soi d’identifier différentes conditions de sol ainsi que les dangers possibles. Les présents travaux ont été confirmés par des résultats de modélisation numérique, lesquels ont démontré que le taux d'affaissement est très utile quant à discerner la réponse dans des environnements géotechniques différents. Vorherige Forschungsprojekte haben den Wert von kontinuierlichen Setzungsmessungen im tiefen Sudafrikanischen Strebabbau angedeutet, vor allem fur Ausbaudesign und Risikobewertung, als auch fur die quantitative Bestimmungen der seismizitatsabhangigen Setzung. Dieses Referat beschreibt weitere Messungen in einer VCR Grube um fruhere Bestimmungen zu bewerten. Dass errechnete Konvergenzverhaltniss erweiste sich als eine gute Massnahme zur bestimmung von geotechnischen Zonen und moglichen Risiken. Numerische Analyse unterstutzte die vorliegende Arbeit und deutete darauf, dass das Konvergenzverhaltniss sehr brauchbar ist um Verhaltensunterschiede der geotechnischen Zonen zu erproben

The phenomenon of spontaneous combustion is one of the major hazards encountered in underground coal mines both from the safety aspects and on economic grounds. Every occurrence, however small, if not tackled effectively in the early stages can develop into open fire, or explosion of gas or coal dust. In terms of economy, even dealing with small incidents may be costly in terms of labour and materials, and in case of a sealing off of a district being necessitated, the loss of face equipment and sterilization of reserves is potentially great. Therefore, expense and effort in prevention and detection of such heating, together with a high state of readiness for dealing with likely event, is completely justified and may be considered as a sound investment. In order to achieve this investment, it may be worth to pinpoint the centre of the fire occurring due to autogenously heating which is supposed to be great assistance to inert it at a least cost and time. Therefore, it is the aim of this work to model the spontaneous combustion in the goaf.

These financial statements are the responsibility of the Institute?s Council. Our responsibility is to report on these financial statements. We have conducted our audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. These standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance that, in all material respects, fair presentation is achieved in the financial statements. The audit included an evaluation of the appropriateness of the accounting policies, an examination, on a test basis, of evidence that supports the amounts and disclosures included in the financial statements, an assessment of the reasonableness of significant estimates, and a consideration of the appropriateness of the overall financial statement presentation. We consider that our auditing procedures were appropriate in the circumstances to enable us to express our opinion presented here. In our opinion these financial statements fairly present the financial position of the Institute at 30th June, 1999, and the results of its operations for the year then ended in conformity with generally accepted accounting practice.

For technology transfer to be successful a process, from research to full scale application, has to be followed. This paper describes such a process and how it is applied in practice. Some of the ?do?s? and ?don?ts? are highlighted. Recommendations are made on how to communicate existing knowledge and to ensure that a framework exists to effectively plan future projects with final technology transfer objectives firmly in place. Tracey Khanna, Assistant Editor of UK?s Mining Magazine discusses some of the new and important environmental challenges, physical and social, that are facing mining companies. The tide of public opinion has turned strongly against those companies which are unable to show that they are practising responsible environmental stewardship. This is, no doubt, in part due to the recent focus of the international media on environmental issues and constantly improving means of communications, which has brought the whole subject of mining and the environment to those who, in the past, had only a limited awareness of the industry. Mining companies today face new and important challenges with regard to the environment, both physical and social. New technology and a greater understanding of waste management techniques has helped to bring about improved handling and disposal of mines wastes, so reducing some of the impacts. However, improved technology has also brought about the economic viability of exploiting increasingly lower-grade ore from open pits, resulting in a greater visual impact.

When it comes to sampling theory, a bad sampler is a bad sampler, no matter what, and a sampler is either bad or good. It also is of critical economic importance to tell and understand the difference, especially in a metallurgical plant. In this paper, the grand principles of Sampling Theory are first recalled, then the most popular types of sample cutters for plants are critically reviewed. It is concluded that the industry has a lot of progresses to make in that direction, although improvements usually pay for themselves very quickly.

Mining can adversely affect water quality and poses a significant risk to South Africa?s water resources. Proactive management of environmental impacts is required from the outset of mining activities in order to reduce this risk. Major strides have been made over the last 7 to 8 years, by both the Department of Water Affairs & Forestry (DWAF) and the mining industry, in developing strategies and management plans for the effective management of water within the industry. This has largely been achieved through the development of joint structures where problems have been discussed and addressed through cooperation. This process, which was started around 1991, has continued through to the present time. The mining sector management strategy has been developed at a number of different levels as follows: ?A detailed Management Plan, that sets out strategic objectives, broad strategies and functional and organizational arrangements. ?Operational Guidelines, that define and document specific operational procedures. ?Technical Guidelines, that define and document best practices for pollution prevention and impact minimization from mining operations. The Technical Guidelines consist of Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) and Regulations.
