The object of the paper is to describe the standards of quality that should be specified in ordering material ordinarily required for colliery use, and also the qualities most suitable for particular purposes. Tables are presented of British Standard tests for wrought iron grades A, B and C, Admiralty tests for iron in chain, the quality of material for wheels and axles, and the composition and mechanical properties of wrought iron, Armco (ingot) iron and drawbar-gear steel. Mineral exploration carried out in Ireland since the mid-1950s has resulted in the discovery of ore deposits that are now in production atTynagh (Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag), Silvermines (Zn-Pb) and nearby Ballynoe (barite), and Gortdrum (Cu-Ag-Hg); a major Zn-Pb deposit at Navan that is now being drilled prior to development; potentially productive deposits at Keel (Zn-Cd-Pb), Ballinalack (Zn-Pb) and Aherlow (Cu-Ag); and a number of interesting prospects, including one of spodumene. Underground exploration of a formerly extensively mined copper deposit at Allihies has outlined new, albeit currently uneconomic, reserves at depth. The copper and pyrite deposits at Avoca have in recent years been re-explored and are now again being worked. Most Irish ore deposits are in the lower half of the Lower Carboniferous succession of limestones and subordinate shales and sandstones, and this stratigraphic zone is being most intensively explored at present. Other geological units under active exploration are Ordovician sediments-volcanics belts, Caledonian granites, and parts of the Old Red Sandstone and Dalradian series. Surface prospecting is made difficult in many places by glacial and other superficial deposits, including peat and alluvium. Geochemical prospecting methods have been outstandingly successful and primarily responsible for most new discoveries. Boulder hunting and outcrop prospecting have proved effective in detailed investigations of geochemically anomalous areas. Some parts of the country have been covered by three separate airborne geophysical surveys, albeit without success so far. The induced polarisation technique, the most widely used ground geophysical method, has contributed to several discoveries. The scope of application of electromagnetic surveys is more restricted than that of induced polarisation, but the method has been effective in a few cases and has contributed to the Tynagh discovery. To date, the resistivity and self-potential methods have found little application. Magnetic surveys are not applicable directly in the search for ore deposits of the various known types, but can be helpful in outlining geological structures in some areas. The gravity method has been used successfully in a survey over the Zn—Pb deposit at Navan ; it has also proved effective in trials over a blind sulphide deposit at Tynagh that cannot be detected with geoelectrical methods. New techniques for the continuous sampling and analysis of mine air are expected to replace traditional methods used for the early detection of spontaneous combustion. It has been established that the rate of evolution of carbon monoxide is the earliest indicator of incipient spontaneous combustion. Two methods of continuous monitoring of this gas are available and are now in use in the UK collieries. The first is the UNOR infra-red gas analyser, which is flameproof and may be used underground; the second is a system of tube bundles, which permits air to be drawn from any critical point in a colliery and analysed on the surface. Each system has its advantages and disadvantages but both provide the colliery manager with far more information on the condition of his pit than could previously be obtained by spot sampling and laboratory analysis. This paper describes the two systems presently in use and assesses likely future developments.

The technique of reclaiming disturbed land by use of a hydraulic dredge pump (HDP) (which is a set of hydraulic machines for earthwork), termed 'digging deep to fill shallow has been used in the reclamation of subsidence areas in Chinese coal mines. This paper discusses the operational principle of the technique and summarises its reclamation procedures, which are being used in current reclamation practice. The soil condition reclaimed by the HDP was studied. The results showed that the pioneer crops to be planted in the reclaimed soil should be the ‘pulse’ family crops, and that improvements to the reclaimed soil and the HDP technique itself are needed. Bused on the analysis of the previous technical processes, a new rational technical model for the HDP reclamation method is presented in this paper.

The major deposits of anhydrite and secondary gypsum in Jamaica occur discontinuously at a single horizon within the Lower Eocene succession of southeast Jamaica. They are not intruded from other horizons of different age, as has previously been supposed. The gypsum and anhydrite occur in a regressive sequence at the junction between marine (Richmond Formation, Halberstadt Volcanics, Halberstadt Limestone) and overlying non-marine (Wagwater Formation) sediments. They are thought to have been formed in an arid supratidal (sabkha) environment. A variety of 'nodular' structures occurs in the gypsum and anhydrite which can be related to early diagenetic processes and compaction effects. All gradations exist between single isolated anhydrite nodules and structureless anhydrite due to closer packing and coalescence of nodules. The structures and textures in the anhydrite are thought to be consistent with penecontemporaneous formation from gypsum crystals rarely more than 2 cm in diameter. Single anhydrite nodules are not usually larger than 2 cm; nodules of greater size are compound, due to the coalescence of several smaller nodules. Some large compound nodules may have developed from single sand crystals or rosettes. Compaction of anhydrite appears to have been largely mechanical, but some rocks have an aligned fabric, suggesting later flowage

The two best known graphical methods for presenting and comparing comminution data are obtained by linearising the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann and the Rosin-Rammler size distribution equations. It is shown that the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann equation can cause excessive congestion in the 50 per cent oversize range and that, overall, the Rosin-Rammler is a better procedure. Examples are given

Mining operations on the Witwatersrand are conducted for the most part in rocks of highly quartzitic character. They comprise the following types: Conglomerates, grits, and quartzites, to which on the Far East Rand must be added fine-grained quartzitic shales and shales. In addition, vein quartz occurring as small veins, veinlets and fissure fillings, and igneous rocks forming dykes, must be mentioned, although they constitute only a small percentage of the rock broken. The following is an account of the character and mineralogical composition of the various types.

"The Koillismaa layered igneous complex is the result of igneous activity that occurred 2436±5 m.y. ago. Its crystallization took place in three separate but connected magma chambers, the total volume of which is estimated at more than 2000 km'. These chambers were located partly in a feeder system within Archaean granitoids and partly in an unconformity between these grani­ toids and Early Proterozoic supracrustal rocks. The composition of the parental magma that initially filled the chambers is thought to have been that of a relatively MgO-rich tholeiite. Sulphides and platinum-group minerals are mainly concentrated in the marginal series of the western part, where they are encountered over a distance of 25 km. This marginal series is an originally nearly horizontal series of rock types that displays a reversed differentiation trend, grading inwards from gabbroic to ultramafic rocks, followed bv rocks of the layered series. The chilled margin is not encountered anywhere in its original position at the contact, probably as a consequence of magmatic erosion, but remnants are to be found in the form of elongated xenoliths. Partly melted siliceous fragments from gneissic country rock typical of the lower part of the marginal series indicate pronounced contamination.Chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite±pyrite are the predominant sulphides. The accessory sulphide minerals include covellite, violarite, marcasite, mackinawite, sphalerite and argentian pentlandite. Platinum-group minerals are represented by froodite, michenerite, merenskyite and sperrylite. Other accessories that have been identified are electrum and native copper and gold. The mean of the Cu/(Cu+Ni) ratio in the mineralizations is 0.67 and Pt/(Pt+Pd) 0.31.It is suggested that the sulphide phase was formed in the marginal series as the solubility of sulphur in the basic magma was lowered by contamination, possibly assisted by some other factors. The sulphur isotope data support the juvenile origin of the sulphur."

Complete extraction of copper from Salobo chalcopyrite concentrate can be achieved in less than 10 minutes by chlorination of the dry concentrate with Cl2 at 450 degrees C and in 5 minutes by chlorination of an aqueous slurry containing 5 wt% concentrate at 30 degrees C. In general, slurry chlorination appears to be faster than dry chlorination. The kinetics of dry chlorination of copper sulphide are controlled by an adsorption mechanism with an activation energy of 6.1 kcal/mole. The rate is independent of chlorine partial pressure when pCl2 exceeds 0.4 atm. In slurry chlorination the dissolution of copper sulphide follows a topochemical reaction model and the rate of chlorination decreases with increase in pulp density and also temperature. Dissolved chlorine appears to take part in the reaction in atomic or ionic form.

The fixed-time locked-cycle grinding test is employed to simulate the industrial closed grinding circuit on the laboratory scale. A mathematical algorithm for 'cyclewise' computer simulation of the locked-cycle test has been derived and used to study an idealised laboratory-scale model of a closed ball-mill circuit. The options for designing slopes in complex geological conditions are reviewed. It is shown that modelling, especially numerical modelling, allows a degree of analysis that cannot otherwise be achieved. Examples are presented of how numerical modelling can be used to investigate fundamental aspects of rock mass behaviour. It is demonstrated that an important consequence of change in scale is that the mechanisms of failure also change. The complex failure of the footwall slope at Aznalcollar, a large open-pit mine in southern Spain, is discussed. Numerical modelling with UDEC (universal distinct-element code) has allowed the realistic simulation of displacements measured in the field

The slow-speed compressor is giving place to the high-speed type, with its greater economy of material and space; and, where very large units are required, the turbo-compressor is supplying the need. In the very large air-supply stations on the Rand, turbocompressor units of a capacity of 20,000 and even 50,000 cubic feet, requiring 4,000 to 13,000 horsepower, are quite a commercial proposition, and have proved a practical success. Air-compressors of this size are, however, very exceptional, and the high-speed reciprocating compressor is quite capable of dealing with the highest outputs so far required in this country and, in the hands of manufacturers experienced in the design of high-speed steam-engines, a very high standard of reliability and efficiency in operation is obtained. The so-called “high-speed” or more correctly quick-revolution type of compressor is now extensively used in mines and collieries; for the air-pressures required for power purposes in mining work, two-stage compression, with an intercooler between stages, is the design usually adopted in best practice. It is not the writer’s intention to describe a variety of high-speed air-compressors but to select as an example of this type of compressor the one with which he is most familiar, and which is probably more largely used than any other, namely, the double-acting two-cylinder two-crank type with automatic light-plate air-valves, and with the working parts lubricated on the forced-lubrication principle. There has been considerable effort in the UK, and more widely in the European Community, to formulate the best ventilation practices and other means of minimising these incidents. Practices and procedures to prevent ignitions are discussed in the light of the risks from current mining methods.

(Paper presented at the Institution of Mining Engineers' general meeting held in London on 8th June 1916.) It was shown in the last Supplement to the Registrar-General's Reports, in connection with the census of 1901, that the general death-rate among colliers was considerably lower than in the great majority of occupations but that there is an exception to this in the case of colliers above the age of 55. Examination of the statistics finds that the excessive death-rate among old colliers is to a large extent only apparent, and that the real excess of bronchitis from which they have suffered has greatly diminished. It is concluded: (1) that good ventilation is of considerable importance to the health and continued working efficiency of miners, as well as to their safety from accidents; and (2) that there is no real statistical evidence of harm resulting from the inhalation of coal-dust or shale-dust in the quantities ordinarily breathed by miners, and a strong presumption that the dust they breathe protects them against serious dangers from bacilli that are removed from the lungs by the dust-clearing cell mechanisms

The kinetics of the copper segregation process has been investigated. The experimental strategy used to isolate the rate-controlling reaction step is described. This step was found to be the chloridisation of the oxide copper minerals in the ore. The link between the rate of chloridisation and the overall rate of segregation is demonstrated experimentally. The influence on the kinetics of the various parameters in a TORCO system is examined and the implications are discussed

The historical development of South Yorkshire mining is traced and note made of the liability to generate spontaneous combustion of some of the seams which have been worked. The liability factor is analysed firstly as an inherent property in the material of a coal seam, and secondly as a circumstance of a situation in which access is provided for the air necessary to sustain oxidation. The geological settings in which incidents of heatings have been known to occur is discussed and conditions favouring a natural pre-disposition to spontaneous oxidation exposed, particularly the effect of argillaceous material overlying the seam. An extensive strata-dynamic study follows to demonstrate the situations in which stray air currents tend to impinge on readily oxidizable material. Prevention techniques are indicated as the identification of strata-dynamic situations in which air access to broken coal is induced and thereafter th operational action to seal off the voids which have been opened up so as to exclude air from the broken coal. Measures to reduce the tendency for ventilating air to short circuit across waste voids, and to obviate deflection of air into packs are outlined. The importance of face and roadway design features is demonstrated and the consequences of practices inimical to good control of spontaneous combustion are related. Discussions on means of detection and also on the sealant materials available are included.
