"The REFLUX™ Classifier (RC™) consists of a fluidized bed housing, with a system of parallel inclined channels above. This system performs a simultaneous gravity separation and desliming of the feed material, utilising the inclined channels in order to retain the relatively fine dense particles. These particles promote the formation of an autogenous dense medium within the fluidized bed. Relatively large, low density particles are displaced from the fluidized bed and conveyed upwards through the inclined channels reporting to the overflow with other finer particles. Given the hydrodynamic role of both the particle size and density in determining the particle transport through a water based suspension, all gravity separators operate over a limited size range. In the case of the REFLUX™ Classifier, efficient separations can be produced across a very broad size range, from nearly 10 mm down to 10 m, however, for a given application the size range is much more limited. This study was concerned with the processing of dense minerals over a broad size range, and the need for multistage processing. Here the overflow from the first stage cascades to the second stage, incorporating coarse gangue rejection. This approach is shown to deliver remarkably high grades and recovery.INTRODUCTION The performance of the REFLUXTM Classifier (RC™) in beneficiating fine coal is well documented (Galvin, 2012). Although the technology can be applied to relatively fine particles below 0.1 mm, or coarser particles below 2.0 mm or even 8.0 mm (Galvin et al., 2010), in each case the technology is applicable to limited particle size ranges. In coal preparation, the most common size range is 0.25 to 2.0 mm, covering an eight-fold range in the particle diameter. Coal has a relatively low density, typically below 1600 kg/m3, with a significant portion below 1400 kg/m3. In water, the buoyant density difference (~ 400 kg/m3) is therefore low compared to that of gangue minerals (1600 kg/m3) by a factor of 4, enhancing the potential for separation. Thus, in coal preparation, the technology can be applied over a commensurately broader size range, typically up to eight-fold."

In this study, it was aimed to produce glass sand with less than 0.15% Fe2O3 for window glass manufacture and glass ware grade with less than 0.05% Fe2O3 from Yalõköy sand dunes having 0.48% Fe2O3. In order to reduce the iron content of the Yalõköy sand dune, magnetic separation, flotation, scrubbing, H2SO4 leaching and drying were used. The optimum iron removal was achieved by H2SO4 baking at 150oC and 8 kg/t acid consumption. In this way, sand concentrate was obtained with 0.04% Fe2O3 and sand recovery 95%.

Laboratory mechanical flotation cells are extensively used in mineral processing for running batch flotation tests with a variety of purposes, for example assessing feed characteristics, determining flotation kinetics, or testing of new reagents and procedures. It is known that the results obtained depend on the operation mode, self-aerated or forced-air, and on the operating conditions selected for the test, in particular impeller speed and gas flow rate. These different results are a consequence of changes in size distribution of the generated bubble population and its remarkable evolution when frother is added; variations in bubble size affect the bubble surface area flux (BSAF), a variable which correlates with particle collection. Results of a two-phase (air-water) test program designed to measure bubble size for a variety of combinations of impeller type and speed, gas flow rate, frother type and concentration, and cell volume, demonstrated the wide range of BSAF with which the cell can be operated. The results obtained in this work demonstrated that gas dispersion in a forced-air lab flotation machine is significantly affected by the characteristics of the impeller/cell geometry combination in use, and the operating conditions selected. Operating conditions must be carefully selected and maintained during the test to ensure consistent results, in particular when frother concentrations below 20 ppm are used, because frother concentration in the cell will decrease as flotation progresses as a consequence of frother partitioning to the concentrate.

Previous research on particle damage during high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) crushing was limited by the resolution of point-projection micro CT systems and the extent of damage was described by the percent of particles cracked for different crushing methods as determined at a voxel resolution of 40 microns. With recent advances in X-ray optics, the resolution afforded with point-projection micro CT systems has been improved by at least an order of magnitude using a lens-based X-ray micro CT system. With the use of X-ray lens imaging the resolution is determined by the lens rather than by the spot size of the micro-focus X-ray source. The high resolution X-ray micro CT (HRXMT) system made by Xradia with a voxel resolution of less than 1 micron is now being used for the characterization of particle damage during HPGR crushing. In this way, the direct 3-D determination of the internal damage of crushed ore particles which vary from 40 mm down to 100 microns in size is being studied at a voxel resolution of a few microns. The number, size, and shape of cracks can now be measured at this improved resolution and for the first time the specific crack surface area distributions of the crushed product can be calculated from HRXMT images using specially designed software tools for 3D analysis. Results from selected crushing operations are presented. Copper ore particles from HPGR crushing at high pressure (6 N/mm2) are severely damaged having crack specific surface areas as great as 10 mm2/mm3. In the leaching of gold in aqueous cyanide solutions the rate of gold leaching may be decreased by the passivation of the gold, that may however be prevented or reversed in the presence of lead species in solution. In the present study potentiostatic, potentiodyanamic and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) analysis were used to further clarify the action of lead ions on the anodic activity of gold in alkaline cyanide solutions. It was found that lead increased the gold dissolution rate as it deposited on the gold surface at potentials more positive than its reversible Nernst potential for bulk metal deposition, i.e. by underpotential deposition mechanism, but that it decreased gold activity if present as bulk plated lead on the gold.

"Water is a necessary process medium in mineral processing. For the operations where fresh water is not available, sea water could be used as an alternative processing medium to replace the fresh water if we would have built a solid understanding of the interfacial science and flotation chemistry of sulfide minerals in sea water. In this research, micro flotation of chalcopyrite and pyrite in deionized water and sea water were investigated. For chalcopyrite, the recovery starts to drop from pH 10 in deionized water and from pH 9 in sea water, and the flotation recovery close to 100% before it drops. We can found from the results that chalcopyrite flotation is depressed much at pH 11 in sea water when much white precipitate is found. For pyrite, the flotaion recovery changs a lot in deionized water with 1*10-5 M potasium amyl xanthate (PAX) as collector. It’s relatively high at pH 8~10 compared with that at pH<8 and pH>10. While in sea water, the trend is almost the same as that of chalcopyrite. Zeta potential measurements and chemical equilibrium calculation were used to find out that magnesium hydroxide species coats on the surfaces at high pH in sea water are the main reason for depressing the chalcopyrite and pyrite flotation. Through understanding the interfacial science and the solution chemistry of sea water and its impact on processing efficiency, this research will not only helps reduce the use of fresh water to minimize the disposal of spent water for environment protection, but also enhance the recovery of valuable minerals in froth flotation."

The application of new collectors is considered to improve the beneficiation of Polish sedimentary complex copper ores from the Legnica-Glogow Copper Basin (SW Poland), the upgradeability of which becomes more difficult because of ores grade declining. One group of potential collectors is represented by nonpolar reagents. According to the available literature data, only selected sulfides float in the presence of the nonpolar liquids. The paper presents laboratory scale flotation results for the main sulfide minerals occurring in the Polish copper ores applying either thiol (potassium ethyl xanthate) or nonpolar (aqueous emulsion of n-dodecane) collectors. The investigated feed contained 1.91 % Cu in the form of sulfide minerals such as bornite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and covellite. Other sulfide minerals including galena, pyrite and sphalerite were also present in the samples. Several flotation tests with various doses of each collector were conducted. Mineralogical analyses of flotation products were carried out and the results compared. A comparison of the results indicated that all sulfide minerals floated well with high recoveries ranging from 91 % to 99 % in the presence of the thiol collector. The use of the nonpolar collector provided results in flotation of sulfide minerals with different terminal recoveries from 61 % for chalcopyrite to 100 % for sphalerite. The most significant differences in flotation in the presence of both types of collector under various conditions of upgrading were observed for chalcocite, chalcopyrite and covellite. Similar flotation results were observed for sphalerite and galena for both collectors. The studies confirmed selective flotation of sulfides from the copper sulfide ores of the Legnica-Glogow Copper Basin in the presence of nonpolar collectors.

Discrete Element Method (DEM) is extensively used to simulate the behaviour of particles in various processing units. This method is based on modelling the forces acting between particles in any contact and consequently calculating the new position of particles. The high number of elements and numerous equations needed have made the required computation time very long even using computers with very fast processors. The required computation time mainly depends on the time step. If the time step is chosen very short, the computation time will significantly increase. On the other hand, if the time step is chosen very long, the simulation will be in error due to not fully observing the contacts. In DEM calculations, the time step is chosen as a fraction of the collision time. In this research, a relationship was proposed between the contact time fraction and the error of simulation. In other words, to select the time step in addition to physical parameters, the accuracy of the simulation was also accommodated in the frequently-used relationships. The simulation error was defined as the relative difference between the initial restitution coefficient and the restitution coefficient obtained after simulation. The required time steps to arrive at the simulation error of 5% were calculated for two common contact force models namely, Hertz-Mindlin and linear spring-dashpot. The simulation was performed for two particles with radius of 3 cm, elasticity modulus of 210 GPa, Poisson&apos;s ratio of 0.3 and relative velocity of 0.5 m/s. The required time steps were found to be 2.3 and 0.19 µs for the Hertz-Mindlin and the linear spring-dashpot contact force models, respectively. Results showed that with a scaling-down the modulus from 210 GPa to 2.1 MPa, the required time steps for the Hertz-Mindlin and the linear spring-dashpot contact force models, with an equal simulation error, increased by 100 and 316 times, respectively.

An effective process plan is an important part of maintaining consistent recoveries in mineral processing operations. Traditionally, Mineralogical studies are completed using chemical and metallurgical methods to monitor recovery and elemental distribution. The development of mineralogy and more efficient processes in mineral analysis techniques means that mineralogy is now more accessible as an efficient and comprehensive study tool. As operating costs increase and feed grades decrease it is important to maintain tight control of process and ensured maximum recovery is maintained at all times. Just a few days of losses in recovery caused by changes in ore type or processing conditions can have a large effect on total metal recovery and profit. Mineralogical audits can be used to minimize these losses by monitoring the fundamental behavior of feed ore on a regular basis. Smart use of mineralogical studies can develop mineralogical and ore type benchmarks in a detailed, which can be used in process control and monitoring. Geological ore types can be used to identify key mineralogical parameters that may be used in routine and cost effective analysis. Mineralogical systems ideally suited to this because of the depth of information on everything from modal mineralogy to locking/liberation characteristics and mineral associations. Mineralogical studies can equally be applied to specific unit operations within the process, which can allow more detailed information to be gathered on areas of the process that have been identified as critical. This will be especially effective for flotation or oxidation processes where process parameters can be very sensitive to small changes in mineralogy. Many technical processes also yield dusty residues which usually contain appreciable amounts of valuable matter. Often they also accumulate substances detrimental to the process. Dumping them entirely in landfills wastes raw material and causes high disposal costs, but recycling them without prior treatment is often not feasible. Physical separation processes are preferable because of their rather low energy demand. In order to develop such treatment systematically, the residues must be characterized properly. The technique for such a characterization is taken from mineral processing: perfect fractionation according to continuous properties of the particles supplemented with chemical analysis are used for plotting the Henry-Reinhardt chart. This represents the benchmark for assessing actual separation processes and tests. Their results are compared in terms of ?selectivity? and plotted in the kappa chart. In this paper, Henry-Reinhardt chart and kappa chart are applied to several different types of residues from iron and steel production and show their potential for being upgraded before reutilization in the production process. "The distribution of turbulence in an industrial scale mechanical flotation cell and its effect on flotation kinetics was studied using a fully instrumented 3m³ cell. The cell was operated at a copper concentrator in Australia with different combinations of airflow rates, impeller speeds and sizes and cell aspect ratio providing a wide range of hydrodynamic conditions. An analysis of the overall flotation cell performance showed that the overall copper recoveries were very similar for the conditions tested. However, by decoupling pulp effects from froth effects it was possible to evaluate whether the changes made affected the pulp zone and/or froth zone responses. The analysis showed that the overall recovery has the potential to be up to 7% higher, if not limited by froth recovery. The cell hydrodynamics were characterised by the overall energy dissipation rate and, to understand the distribution of turbulence within the cell, localised measurements were made using a piezoelectric vibration sensor. By comparing the metallurgical performance of the cell with the different hydrodynamic conditions it was found that the collection zone flotation rate constant was not directly related to overall energy dissipation, as is commonly observed at laboratory scale, where energy is usually only changed by varying impeller speed. In this study, energy dissipation rate was varied using not only impeller speed, but also the size of the impeller and the cell aspect ratio. In these circumstances, the best correlation was found to be between the collection zone flotation rate constant and the distribution of turbulence, i.e. the size of the turbulent zone."

The beneficiation of phosphate ores by froth flotation is the most efficient process used to separate apatite from gangue minerals like calcite, dolomite and quartz. However, the similarity of surface properties between apatite and calcite generally lead to non-selective adsorption of reagents, rendering the selective separation of these minerals a worldwide problem. The phosphate deposit of Itataia, State of Ceará, Brazil, studied in the present work, presents a complex mineralogical composition having uranium associated with the apatite mineral. The main gangue minerals are calcite and quartz. The bulk flotation of apatite and calcite with anionic collectors in an alkaline medium followed by the selective flotation of calcite at pH 5.5 using phosphoric acid as well as citric acid as depressant have been suggested for this ore. This paper presents the results of contact angle measurements obtained using jojoba oil, a natural reagent composed mainly of gadoleic acid (C20:1) and long-chain fatty alcohols (eicosenol and docosenol), as an alternative collector for the selective separation of apatite and calcite minerals. The hydrophobicity studies were carried out using a computer controlled contact angle goniometer. Additionally, the collector adsorption was evaluated via electrophoretic mobility and FTIR measurements. The results indicated that a high selectivity can be obtained by using jojoba oil as collector in a slightly acid pH range, without the use of depressant. The best results were achieved with a jojoba oil concentration of 200 mg.L-1 at pH 6.5, where the apatite was fully hydrophilic and calcite showed a high hydrophobicity (? > 60 º).

Mining and mineral processing operations are usually generating huge amount of tailings. These tailings often gives lots of maintenance work in order to protect environmental resources from heavy metals slowly leaching out of tailing are due to Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) process. Handling leakage could be active or passive such as using of Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRB). PRB?s are used worldwide treating underground contaminations, using different type of matrix materials. All generally used matrix material has its advantages and disadvantages such as selectivity, sensitivity of precipitation generation or not satisfying hydraulic conductivity. Nowadays cheap and effective matrix material which is ignorant to pore plugging caused by precipitation within the PRB could be one solution to the demands of the industry. The authors have been carried out an investigation at University of Miskolc on lignite as high humid acid containing material for determining the ability of heavy metal adsorption and pore plugging resistance. Moreover, using hydraulic and chemical simulation methods, complete PRB dimensioning protocol based on new lignite matrix had been introduced. Within the frame of this paper the results are going to be discussed.

"This paper, an overview of our recent findings on mechanical activation (MA) of minerals/materials, emphasizes the importance of sample genesis, mechanically induced/altered porosity and surface area, mineral interactions, glassy inorganic materials, surface alteration and zeta potential changes and, mechanically induced reactivity of solids. Materials investigated include Al-oxyhydroxides (gibbsite and boehmite), fly ash and granulated blast furnace slag. Planetary, attrition, vibratory and conventional ball mills are used for MA. Genesis of boehmite has been found to have a bearing on its behavior during MA. For example, BET specific surface area (SSA) of boehmite prepared by thermal dehydroxylation of gibbsite has decreased from 265 to 65 m2/g during 240 min of MA; in contrast, the SSA of hydrothermal boehmite has increased from ~2 to 36 m2/g. Mechanisms of surface area changes in the two boehmite samples differing in their genesis is explored. MA of gibbsite and its mixture with hematite/quartz using attrition milling has indicated that the presence of the second phase promotes amorphisation. Amorphous materials show signs of change in nature of bonding during milling as illustrated by MA of fly ash. Physicochemical changes during MA are not restricted to the bulk phase. The genesis of zeta potential changes in MA solids can be many; for example texture induced zeta potential changes as observed for gibbsite, while zeta potential changes during the milling of granulated blast furnace slag occur due to enhanced (possibly non-congruent) dissolution. Interesting manifestations of mechanically induced reactivity and its correlation with physicochemical changes are illustrated in terms of alkali leaching of boehmite and, hydration of MA slag. New findings reported here are associated with several open questions and are highlighted in the paper."

Gold thiosulfate complex is difference with gold cyanide complex, which is easily adsorbed on activated carbon while gold thiosulfate complex cannot be satisfactorily recovered by activated car-bon. However, Gold thiosulfate could be recovered by activated carbon if cyanide is added into the thiosulfate solution. To avoid the cyanide solution, this paper will review several possible processes to recover the gold from thiosuldate solution: such as the cementation with metals, ion exchange resin and solvent extraction. The gold cementation with the powders of zinc, copper, iron and aluminium will be discussed. The advantage and disadvantage of each are compared. The consumption of thiosulfate and copper and feasibility of solution recycling will be discussed. The gold recovery by some ion exchange resins will be suggested. The processing conditions, its applications and the resin elution methods will be presented. The gold recovery by using solvent ex-traction will be reviewed. The processing conditions of solvent extraction process are discussed and compared.

"Studying the interaction of the phosphorus-containing flotation reagent with the components of the flotation system ""liquid-gas-solid"" during flotation of non-ferrous metal ores allows regulating the enrichment process. The phosphorus-containing reagent-collector anabasinium-O,O-dimethyl-thiophosphate has beensynthesized under laboratory conditions and the concentrated aqueous solution of anabasin hydrochloride and the 40% solution of sodium hydroxide have been used as the raw material. The phosphorus-containing reagent has been obtained by interaction of the anabasine base, sulfur and dimethyl phosphite, due to sulfur and nitrogen atoms it can form complex compounds with heavy metal ions.Studying flotation of copper-sulfide ore of the Sayak field with the use of the phosphorus-containing reagent-collector anabasinium has been performed in the open and closed cycles. The degree of ore grinding was 60- 62% of the class -0.074 mm. There has been established the dependence of the ore flotation parameters on: a) pH of the pulp; b) the consumption of the reagent-collector anabasinium.The effect of the pulp pH on the technological parameters of copper ore flotation has been carried out with a reagent regulator that increases the difference in the surface properties of the minerals to be separated.There has been used lime as the regulator of the medium, the consumption of which varied from 750 to 1500 g/t; the consumption of the reagent-collector anabasinium was 10, 15, 20 and 25 g/t.It has been found that when flotation of copper ore without the use of lime at pH equal to 7.8 and at the reagent consumption, g/t: anabasinium - 25, T-92 - 55, copper recovery in the concentrate is 92.72%, the quality of concentrate is 7, 1%.In flotation according to the factory mode (the consumption of xanthate is 44 g/t, T-92 is 55 g/t, pH = 7.8 (without lime)) of copper ore, copper recovery in the concentrate is 87.38%, the concentrate quality is 7, 97%, with reducing the xanthate consumption to 25 g/t copper recovery is reduced to 83.39%, the quality of the concentrate is up to 6.69%.In the experiments using the factory reagent mode in the closed cycle, with the xanthate mass consumption of 44 g/t, T-92 blowing agent of 55 g/t, the third recleaning concentrate contained 19.13% copper with recovery of 86.89%.Using a phosphorus-containing reagent instead of xanthate with the same flow rate, the third recleaning concentrate with the mass fraction of copper of 19.82% has beenobtained with recovery of 87.77%."

A new multi-stage counter-current circulation leaching process for extracting vanadium from stone coal was proposed, and the main factors on multi-stage counter-current circulation acid leaching process were investigated. The results show that the vanadium recovery could reach 86% under the conditions of sulfuric acid concentration of 4 M, liquid to solid ratio of 2 mL/g, temperature of 95 °C, reaction time of 60 min, mean particle size of 125 µm and circulation acid leaching stage of three. The losses of vanadium in acid leaching solution appeared during the four-stage acid leaching process. The strong adsorption performance of new formed KAl(SO4)2(H2O)12 crystal was main reason.

At times the phosphate industry, in Florida, encounters phosphate rock that gives lower than expected P2O5 recovery in the rougher plant section. The drop in recovery is typically 10% and as much as 30% or more. Variations in feed quality from day to day, shift to shift and even from drag-line to drag line, represent a challenge to the beneficiation plant operators and reagents? suppliers. Therefore, this characterization study has been initiated to identify the reasons for the differences in flotation behavior of such feeds. The study involves many samples to cover such variations. The characterization work includes: ? Mineralogical and chemical analysis; ? Size, shape, surface roughness and porosity analysis; ? Surface charge and surface contamination with other phases (minerals); ? Clay content and its relationship to phosphate and silica particles. The results correlated with flotation data and adsorption density measurements clearly establish the statistically significant variability in characteristic features that influence flotation response. This article discusses results from the above listed studies. On the basis of the obtained data, recommendations of practical approaches to overcome the problem of feed variability in phosphate flotation plants are delineated.

"The flotation process, largely used for mineral concentration processes, which is based on air bubble adhesion to the dispersed solid phase, is also being used for wastewater treatment purposes. Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is based on the separation of the solid-liquid phases with the aid of small air bubbles (10-100 µm), with high values of interfacial contact area, improving the process efficiency. In the process, the air bubbles and particles or flocs form aggregates, which rise to the surface of the flotation cell to be collected. The advantage of producing small bubbles is directly related to the fact that smaller bubbles result in greater bubble-particle interaction. Wastewater produced in alumina refinery - from the red mud filtration step - has a red colored aspect due to the presence of very fine particles of red mud and also dissolved matter that still remain in the filtrate. This wastewater might be treated, aiming to reuse the water in the refinery or discharge it properly in the environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the DAF process efficiency for the treatment of red mud wastewater in order to decrease suspended particles and dissolved solids contents, in addition to mitigate the high causticity of this wastewater. The process efficiency was evaluated by comparing turbidity removal and total solids concentration in the treated wastewater to the feed. The influence of important variables of the DAF process as type and concentration of coagulant and flocculant were evaluated. It was possible to obtain good turbidity removal efficiencies (up to 90%) using low concentrations of coagulant (50 mg/L) and flocculant (0.5 -1.0 mg/L). In addition, for most of the experiments, the specification for effluent diposal, according to the Brazilian environmental regulation 430 (Conama, 2011): pH range 5 to 9 and turbidity < 40 NTU, was attained. These results emphasize the possibility of using the DAF as an alternative technique to settling and filtration process, that are traditionally used, for treating wastewater from the alumina industry, allowing the reuse of water in the plant or adequate discharge with less environmental impact."

Geopolymerisation has emerged during the last few years as an industrial and ecological approach to construction and waste management. By utilizing waste materials and their reactive properties, it is now possible to create geopolymers systems that not only mechanically durable enough to be used as construction materials but are also potential stable immobilisation systems for toxic waste. Previous studies by Van Jaarsveld et al. (1997) and Van Jaarsveld et al. (1998) have reported on the numerous applications of geopolymers in the immobilisation of toxic metals. Research into the possible utilisation of geopolymers as an encapsulation media for organic waste has however been rare. This paper therefore provides an insight into the possible utilisation of geopolymers as a binder for hazardous organic materials.
