An attempt was made to determine the lateral extent of analcite in the Newcastle Coal Measure sediments of the Sydney Basin. From an examination of the cores of eleven bores it was concluded that the mineral is concentrated in the western sector of the original Newcastle Basin and this presumably was the region of greatest sodium concentration and aridity. The distribution of the analcite is such that it appears to have little correlative value.

To a bank that granted his request for a loan, the late American humorist Robert Benchley responded, `I don't trust a bank that would lend money to such a poor risk'. This quotation is unlikely to be the norm among mining companies that secure project financing. However, a poor appreciation of one of the key risks of a mining project, the reserves, often results in disastrous financial consequences. This conclusion is the subject of the discussion and analyses presented in this paper.

The environment under discussion is that of the sandy coastal plain and adjacent offshore sandy islands. The environment is the result of natural forces of the past which moulded it. Only very recently have men and machines participated in this moulding. The future of the environment - the changes which it must undergo - is in the hands of natural forces with, presumably, man's continued participation. Mine scheduling is a process which represents what happens in a mine over time. An optimised plan involves selecting the best workable plan which meets a stated objective. This paper discusses some of the theory and philosophy behind mine scheduling and explains how scheduling is a step in the total iterative mine planning process. Several schedules may be necessary before arriving at a mine plan which can be considered optimal. A description of broadbrush and detailed scheduling is given and the features of computer assisted scheduling are also described. The use of mathematical modelling techniques in conjunction with scheduling to optimise the mine plan is explained. The need to incorporate these techniques to optimise the whole mining system rather than only a part, is emphasised.

Polarization phenomena associated with the use of an agitated bed of particles as an electrode for metal deposition were studied. The concentration polarization at this type of electrode is much smaller than that occurring at a fixed or moving electrode surface. Agitated particle electrodes can be used to electro-reduce copper from solutions over a wide range of concentration and at cur·rent densities up to 2000 AIsq. ft. of bed cross section.

Petroleum exploration is proceed ing in Western Australia at an ever- increasing pace. Results in recent years have been very successful, with the discovery and development of the Barrow Island oilfield and the Dongara gasfield, and the discovery of several major gas-condensate fields on the Northwest Shelf. The Northwest Shelf discoveries will have a big impact on the economy of the State by providing an abundant indigenous source of energy. Prospects for further large dis- coveries are believed to be excellent. A by-product of the lead smelting operations at BHAS is a copper-lead matte typically containing 35% copper, 38% lead and 12% sulphur. A hydrometallurgical treatment process has been developed for the treatment of this matte to recover copper as cathode and results in a lead-sulphur residue which is recycled to the lead smelter. A commercial plant with a nominal capacity of 4000 tpa utilising this process was commissioned during 1984. This plant has been shown to be capable of producing copper cathode at rates approaching 4000 tpa over short periods of time.

Outsourcing of mining operations and services is done for various reasons and there is no single model which fits all situations. Experienced contractors and mine owners have also developed, more often than not, jointly, numerous commercial arrangements and project delivery methods to suit their particular project. It is often the case that some mine owners who have not considered outsourcing to contractors do so because of a simple lack of understanding of the potential benefits. This paper will highlight the potential benefits and perceived disadvantages of outsourcing for mine owners and demonstrate how these issues have been addressed by the mining contracting community over recent times as well as demonstrate the evolution of current commercial arrangements in engaging mining contractors.

Dr. Willett. I will start by answering one or two general points which have been posed. The first point is a question of liability of a seam to spontaneous combustion. Some seams are very liable to spontaneous combustion. Some seams are not liable at all except in most abnormal circumstances, and some seams have a liability somewhere between these two extremes. Dr. J. S. Haldane made the comment some 50 years or so ago that if you try hard enough you can make any coal seam in the world fire spontaneously. Many heatings have in fact occurred because the coal has been allowed to be ground up into a fine state and there has been air leakage through it for many years. This has resulted in spontaneous combustion which would not have occurred in some seams unless conditions had been very abnormal indeed. One comment I heard while listening to the discussions of one team was the importance of encouraging morale and the team seemed to go to the extent of suggesting that this was more important than the actual technical action taken. Though I agree that everything possible should be done to encourage morale, it must be in conjunction with the correct technical method of dealing with the Emergency.

There is a link between the requirements of society and the determination of curricula in tertiary educational institutions. Mineral resources exploration provides a strong example of this link. The resources exploration business engages in scientific, engineering, commercial and management activities in an endeavour to discover economically extractable commodities. Most geoscience and geotechnical graduates are employed by the mineral industry for resource exploration and development. This industry comprises a wide range of employer groups which include the Bureau of Mineral Resources, CSIRO, energy authorities, State geological surveys, State water commissions and private companies. Such employers are variously charged with the task of understanding and utilising earth resources to the benefit of society. It follows therefore, that undergraduate education and post-graduate specialization should be directed towards meeting the needs of employer groups in the geoscientific and geotechnical fields. In the past the training of most Australian geologists has emphasised classical science. This type of training remains of primary importance in the early undergraduate years but there is a need for modern educators to recognise the increased desirability for the inclusion of geotechnical subjects in the curriculum. The equipment and procedures used for green pellet production on a laboratory scale are given, together with a description of the straight grate pellet strand analogue which has been developed to examine the response of various ore types to heat hardening. The capabilities of the analogue are illustrated with data obtained from the balling and drying studies using a manganese ore. Deep lead mining by methods other thanconventional open-cut techniques has not been effectively employed in Australia in -the second half of this century. The reasons for this are essentially economic, and are related particularly to the labour intensive nature of the methods involved as well as the high consumption of support materials. These methods have been adapted in recent times to undertake bulk sampling programmes in deep leads. Although some consideration is given to surface-oriented hydraulic and solution mining applications, the prime function of this paper is to investigate the possible application of modern underground methods to deep lead exploitation. As deep leads are not currently being worked (with the exception of some minor operations on the Eastern seaboard), these applications remain essentially untested. They have, however, been conceptually developed following several years of small scale deep lead development. Current mineral economics, particularly with respect to gold, combined with the known extent of partially - or totally - unexploited mineralised leads demonstrates the necessity to investigate all possible means of ore extraction.

The heavy medium cyclone plant for the preconcentration of silver-lead-zinc ore prior to grinding and flotation was commissioned in August 1982. This paper details the measures taken to get the plant up to design performance which involved modifications to the medium densifying and slimes clarifying sections. Operating experiences to date are described with emphasis on the low medium consumption recorded and severe wear on process equipment.

The implementation of the Mining Further Amendment) Act, 1970, and later the Coal Mining Act, 1973, placed a requirement on the Department of Mines to accept an initiative in relation to coal exploration and coal mine development which does not apply in the case of other minerals. It is necessary to consider the exploration of the total coal resources of the State when considering exploration rather than one individual basin or deposit. If the level of knowledge of the coal resources in these basins is considered in relation to their potential for development it is possible to allocate broad scale priorities to their assessment. Due to the enormity of the task which involves a conservative estimate of in excess of 400 000 m of drilling to reach a broad reconnaissance level of understanding the involvement of industry with the Department in the exploration programme is necessary. With ever-increasing energy costs and the modern focus on system efficiencies, the practice of æventilation-on-demandÆ is gaining momentum. Several examples, ranging from paper studies to practical examples have been recorded and another recent case study is presented here to encourage the practice. In comparison, æcooling-on-demandÆ has received far less attention. This paper explores the possible merits of this practice by investigating the theoretical response of cool intake airways and the thermal interaction between the air and the rock, in order to gain a better understanding of the system behaviour and to quantify the possible savings. A case study is presented that demonstrates the improvements that can be achieved. Recent developments that allow live interaction between ventilation network models and on-line monitoring systems, have the potential for intelligent active control and alarming of ventilation and cooling networks. This will facilitate and maximise the benefits to be derived from ventilation and cooling-on-demand.
