Dealing with Aboriginals and various others purporting to represent them has become part and parcel of exploration and mining in Australia, whereas 20 years ago it was not. The author has been involved in dealings with Aboriginal groups over this period. The following paper is a summary of the social background to such dealings and a compendium of rules for the newcomer to this aspect of the resource industry.

There are numerous detrital diamond deposits worldwide with uncertain or disputed links to known primary kimberlite/lamproite sources. In this study, we utilise 40Ar/39Ar dating of clinopyroxene inclusions in diamonds as a provenance tool applied to the mega-placer deposits along the West Coast of southern Africa. These data demonstrate that most West Coast diamonds originated known Cretaceous kimberlites on the Kaapvaal craton with negligible input from proximal Permian glacial deposits. This paper will provide an overview of the coal mining industry operating in the Wollongong area, covering: the history and heritage of mining in the Illawarra region;unique features affecting mining in the region û opportunities and threats;current mining operations in the area;challenges facing coal mining in the region, including managing environmental impacts and seeking community support for mining approvals; andthe future for coal mining in the region. The paper aims to showcase the size and history of the coal mining industry around Wollongong and to emphasise the specific benefits and challenges that are faced by companies operating coal mines in such close proximity to urban and environmentally sensitive areas.

The successful operation of diesel equipment underground does not entirely depend on selection of robust, reliable, easily maintained machines. Results are also heavily influenced by the following factors: Design and condition of the operating area. Skill of operators. Correct maintenance facilities. Experience, skill and initiative of maintenance personnel. If the mine layout does not allow access to a central workshop area, the effect of any shortcomings will be magnified. The best results will only be obtained by close co-operation between mining and maintenance departments right from the initial planning stages.

Just what are the problems/issues of access to lands today? What is being done about them? What can be achieved? What is practical to achieve? Aspects of sampling are becoming more complex, involving a correct statistical approach to collection as well as geological and possibly pedological control. Advanced chemical techniques and techniques of rapid analysis need to be understood. Results may require statistical analysis. The elementary aspects of sampling still need constant attention by those controlling a programme of sampling. No one person will have sufficient knowledge of statistics, geology, pedology and chemistry to be fully conversant with all the aspects of sampling but, by developing a correct approach, problems can be identified and solved.

Gold mining in Waihi spans three centuries and five generations. Following the discovery of gold in 1878 the Martha Mine was developed and the town of Waihi grew up around it. Now, five generations later, descendents of many of the original settler families continue to live and work in Waihi. Many have returned to mining, in jobs far removed from those of their parents or grandparents.   Members of three local families were interviewed on video. This paper is a summary of some of the major themes and gives some insight into the role gold mining played in the development of the region and its continued its importance today.

There are two main challenges in analysis of spectral data: to output as accurate an interpretation of the sample mineral assemblage as possible and to then use the spectral data to map out trends (downhole, across section or traverse) that will assist the exploration geologist to target drilling and further exploration. This paper will discuss methods of extracting the maximum amount of information from spectral data and examples of plotting the information downhole, in section and plan view to assist in exploration and mining. This report on the 5th International Conference on Underground Space and Earth Sheltered Structures, which was held at the University of Technology, Delft, the Netherlands, on 2 to 5 August 1992, was submitted to the members of the Australian Underground Construction and Tunnelling Association. The report describes the conference themes and outcomes and puts forward some observations about a growing world-wide interest in the promotion of appropriate uses of underground space. The report recommends the creation of an Australian centre for research to bring together a wide range of professional disciplines and to focus attention on the potential benefits of using underground space.

One of the often overlooked factors affecting the capital investment decision in new or existing plants is the value of stock holdings necessary to maintain the plant. This paper puts forward a simple decision matrix on whether a part should be stocked depending on 1. the criticality of the item of equipment in terms of the effect on cash flow of its failure, 2. the lead time of the part, and 3. the stock holding value if it were Stocked.

Legislation, if it is to be effective, must be enforceable by the state and acceptable to the industry. In the mining industry the relationship between the government inspector on the one hand and the mine management and employees on the other, must be one of full co-operation before the system can be effective. To understand our present system, which is-duplicated in most countries of the world, an examination of the history from which it evolved is necessary.

While international coal trading operations often involve relatively small contract quantities, delivered over short periods or even in single shipments, most coal is supplied under long term arrangements. In entering into these arrangements the customer needs to be assured that coal of suitable and consistent quality can be supplied for their duration in the volume required. A detailed knowledge of the mine and transport system is required and must be presented from the customer's perspective.

The San JosT district in Patagonia comprises a number of epithermal precious metal quartz veins hosted by a Mesozoic volcanic sequence. New radiometric data indicates that upper Jurassic volcanism was closely followed by vein mineralisation in the lower Cretaceous. A structural model is discussed for the district at times of mineralization that may also apply on a regional scale and other mineralised districts in Patagonia. The Department of Mineral Resources is the lead agency in mine site environment management and control in New South Wales. The Department introduced a Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Plan (MREMP) process several years ago in order to integrate the activities of other government agencies who may have a material interest at the mine site. The MREMP process has resulted in a spirit of trust and co-operation between agencies and between agencies and mining companies. The spirit of co-operation has been reflected in greater public confidence that mining is environmentally responsible.

The smaller mining company with full ownership of, or participation in, a mining project is generally unable to obtain funding as easily as the major mining house. While the equity market remains the main funding source for small projects, debt fund- ing options are becoming more available. Many international banks possess in-house mine fin- ancing expertise which can assist the smaller company in financing its share of project development. A clear understanding is necessary of both the benefits and limitations of bank funding, to ensure that all potential sources of funds are properly considered and integ- rated into the financial plans of the smaller mining companies.

Papua New Guinea is geologically prospective for large, medium and small mineral discoveries. All profitable developments to date have been very large mines but for every large mine there should be many small mines which could be developed under appropriate circumstances.The Papua New Guinea Government should, with appropriate changes to fiscal, legislative and policy regimes, create a favourable exploration envir-onment to encourage a major increase in exploration by small exploration companies and subsequent discoveries and mine development.

Fluidised Bed Combustion technology has expanded since the first fluidised bed boiler steamed in 1974 with 58 companies currently supplying units. In Australia the market has been in small boilers and the goal of a limited attendance coal fired boiler has been achieved. On the world scene, the major incentive for development has been emission control with sulphur capture and low NOX. The potential of significant reduction in plant size is encouraging development of pressurised fluidised bed combustion.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) is commencing a project to develop a National Minerals Information System (NMIS) for New Zealand . Initially, the NMIS project will focus on providing public access via a web site to existing minerals related databases maintained by GNS and some other organisations. Core components are geological maps, GERM (Geological Resource Map), REGCHEM (Regional Exploration Geochemistry), PETLAB (rock catalogue), GEOCHRON (radiometric ages), mineral deposit models, mineral deposit profiles and 3D mineral deposit GIS databases. In addition to developing the web site, the project will include upgrades of some of the databases and the production of derivative products such as mineral resource and prospectivity assessments, and mineral inventories.
