Noranda Inc is a Canadian mining and metallurgical company with its activities managed through businesses in copper and recycling, zinc, aluminum, magnesium and various metals through its interest in Falconbridge Ltd. Noranda operates three base metal mines, three copper smelters, one copper refinery, one zinc refinery, one lead smelter and refinery, three copper recycling and sampling facilities seven aluminum producing facilities and one magnesium production facility in the construction stage. The mining side of Noranda has a strong history of open stope, cut and fill and shrinkage mining. The 1999 Noranda Annual Report lists a 206 million tonne resource located at Porphyry Mountain in GaspT, QuTbec. Mont Porphyre is a large tonnage, low-grade porphyry style Cu-Mo deposit that was discovered in 1994. It is located at a depth between 1.0 and 1.7 km below surface and characterised by a very competent rock mass. The Mont Porphyre resource is located adjacent to the town of Murdochville, close to NorandaÆs Mines GaspT operations. Mines GaspT closed its open pit and underground operations in 1999 after approximately 45 years of mining, but still operates a copper smelter near Murdochville. The low-grade and great depth of the Mont Porphyre resource suggested that mine design could not be based on the conventional Noranda open stoping mining practice. This paper will review NorandaÆs approach to evaluating the Mont Porphyre deposit. The approach included two definition diamond drilling campaigns, a review of current caving practice, an in-house scope study, a geotechnical logging program for diamond drill core and participation in an international study on cave mining. One interesting component of NorandaÆs approach was the scope study that involved a team of multi-disciplinary personnel drawn together for a short period of time. The objective of the scope study was to determine what conditions would be necessary to mine the deposit and to assess the merits of continuing with further exploration work. A review of current worldwide underground bulk mining practices, and in particular an evaluation of the applicability of caving mining methods, were key components of the scope study. The scope study team concluded that derivatives of caving could be applied to the mining of Mont Porphyre, but additional diamond drilling was recommended to further define the deposit and improve the level of geotechnical information. Following the recommendations of the scope study team, a diamond drilling campaign was completed during the summer and fall of 1997. The 1997 drilling campaign had two secondary objectives, in addition to the primary objective of defining the limits of the orebody. The first objective was to improve the level of geotechnical information available for the characterisation of primary block cave fragmentation. The second objective was to improve the delineation of a lower grade intrusive core. A geomechanical investigation was conducted and included particular emphasis on geotechnical data collection and analysis. A review of the actual data collection process, including several trials of different core orientation techniques, will be included in the discussion.

This address was delivered at the Annual Conference Presidential Dinner held in Sydney on 11 July 1988.The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy brings together, voluntarily, people with a professional interest in the disciplines and skills which are employed in the mineral industry, and in relation to that industry.We come together because we have a mutual interest in improving what is done by the mineral industry, in all its aspects. It is this sense of continuing improvement, of doing better, of doing as well as we can, as our knowledge and skills improve, that unites us in creating and fostering a professional association of likeminded people.We know from our professional training and experience that enormous progress has been made, at an ever-increasing rate, in the mineral industry, particularly this century. We know that the mineral industry has played a very major role in providing the means by which so many more people survive to live longer, healthier ,and more interesting lives, than ever before. Indeed, together with the oil and gas industry, which is an integral part of the mineral industry but has achieved its own commercial distinction, it is fair to claim that the mineral industry has played the major role in providing the means for the advancement of the human, quality of life.We do not need to make any great claims on human society in consequence of our statement of these contributions. The facts, for those who are aware of them, speak for themselves. Our more modest interest, as members of our professional association, is to look to the future, while conscious of our heritage as a guide to what more might be done, in that future.We certainly do not claim that this indisputable contribution made to human welfare by the mineral industry gives us some moral position of superiority from which to claim greater support or understanding from the wider community of people.On the other hand we know that as members of the mineral industry we have a responsibility to do what we can to help other people to be aware of, and to understand the significance of, those facts which will only speak for themselves if we take the trouble to make them known. And we have a number of organisations. The Institute itself, The Australian Mining Industry Council, the various State Chambers of Mines, the industrial relations body, The Australian Mines and Metals Association, and others, each of which in its own way endeavours to add strength to the individual efforts which we each should make.We may look at these facts about our mineral industry as simple dry statistics, even with their undoubtedly improving trends, or we can see them, and portray them to others, as expressing something which is much more. We can portray them as expressing the outcomes of our professional determination to strive to do better, whatever it i,s we find ourselves doing in this mineralindustry.We may seek to describe our efforts as being in pursuit of excellence, or by other such high-sounding phrases, but I prefer to describe those efforts as simply our strivings to make everything we do better next time-much as the dedicated golfer tries to do, but with, may I suggest, more evident success achieved in the mineral industry; which is one reason why I don't try to play golf.May I suggest to you that trying to do better, is very simply the true basis of professionalism? We are trained and practised to see the opportunity for improvement-not to be static in a world which we know is changing so rapidly in every aspect around us. We must be dynamic, which means optimistic, about improving the world in which we find ourselves.

SIROSMELT is a successful new pyrometallurgi- cal furnace system using a top-entry lance which can be submerged in both slag and matte. The lance is of simple construction, and is cooled by process air. Pilot plant work commenced in the CSIRO Division of Chemical Engineering in 1972 using a 50 kg batch reactor. This paper traces the development of the technology through various slag cleaning and smelting processes up to a scale of 5 tonnes per hour continuous feed. Strong co- operation between CSIRO and the Australian smelting industry has contributed greatly to the success of SIROSMELT.

An overburden blast utilising horizontal blast holes was successfully attempted at the Ulan Coal Mines during December 1991. The blast reduced operational problems and costs and improved dragline productivity in an area of that contains poorly consolidated sands and clays overlying very hard Permian strata.The fan shaped shot consisted of seven 250 mm diameter holes between 80 and 95 metres long drilled into the highwall face. The holes were loaded with ICI Powergel Gold 25606 bulk Emulsion explosive. The design powder factor was 0.15 kg/bcm for the total shot of 180 000 bcros and 0.44 kg/bcm for the competent Permian strata into which the holes were drilled. Fragmentation from the horizontal blast was comparable to areas conventual blasted. Following the success of this shot further shots are planned for this area.

WMC Resources Ltd nickel operations have expanded significantly over the last three years. Production capacity has increased at mine/concentrate, smelting and refinery processes to such an extent that WMC now ranks within the top three or four producers of nickel metal in all forms. The stainless steel industry remains the dominant user of nickel. WMC's forecast is for stainless steel production to grow at 2.8 per cent per annum off of the 1995 peak, with much slower growth in the short-term as the stainless steel inventory overhang unwinds, followed by a return to higher trend growth rates. WMC's forecast for the long-term growth in demand for primary nickel is three per cent per annum off the 1995 peak; again, slower growth in the short-term before a return to higher long-term trend rates. This projection is towards the optimistic end of the range of industry experts. It equates to a requirement for new primary nickel of 25 000 to 30 000 tonnes of annual capacity each year.

The use of dolomite as a refractory began in England about 1870 when the basic Bessemer process for the removal of phosphorus from steel was developed by Thomas and Gilchrist.Knowledge of dolomite as a refractory in this country goes back to the early part of this century, at the time when the Hoskins Brothers took over the Lithgow Iron and Steel Works from W. Sandford. The practice then was toimport burned dolomite in casks from England. It is reported that much of the material was powdered when received, but was still serviceable. The earliest. used sources of local stone were in the Bathurst and Mudgee areas of New South Wales, and these dolomites were first used raw. Later, dolomite was burned in cupolas at Havilah near Mudgee, coke being obtained from the South Coast of New South Wales. This plant supplied burned dolomite to the Lithgow steel plant, later to the Australil1n Iron and Steel plant at Port Kembla, and also to the electric steel furnaces at Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne until the plant was closed down in 1946.The Broken Hill Proprietary Company first obtained its dolomite from George's Plains near Bathurst (this was, really a magnesium limestone) and later from Mount Knowles, a deposit near Mudgee, which was eventually taken over by the CO:plpany in 1918. The Mt Leyshon Gold Mine is located 30 kilometres south of Charters Towers in Northern Queensland. The current open cut mine has been in operation since 1986. In 1992 a feasibility study was completed that recommended an increase in production to over 240 000 ounces of gold per year. This proposal required an upgrade of the processing plant to five million tonnes per year, and an enlarged mining fleet to provide additional ore, and to meet the increased waste removal requirements. The implementation of the mine expansion program during 1993 required the Life of Mine plan to be extensively revised. This required the assessment and management of potential risks associated with the mine design. The updated geological model using the 1992 drilling results along with the actual contract mining and processing costs were used to establish a series of nested optimised pit shells. The total and incremental quantities and costs were then analysed to determine a suitable pit perimeter. The pit and phase plans were then created and used to devise a staged development plan. The block layout plans for each bench were then established from which a detailed life of mine production schedule was created.

Production from the Cattle Grid orebody commenced in August, 1974. This followed a recent discovery arising from an extensive exploration programme involving stratigraphic drilling, geochemistry and geophysics. Located some 4 km west of the original copper occurrences at Pernatty Lagoon the discovery was found to contain 4.6 million tonnes of ore averaging 2.4% copper. The ore is a "sandstone copper" type localised near the disconformity between two Precambrian (Adelaidean) stratigraphic units, the Pandurra Formation and the Whyalla Sandstone. The mineralisation roughly follows the interface between these units and occurs in fractures, vugs and along bedding planes. The mineralogical character of the ore is somewhat complex consisting of chalcocite and bornite, with associated chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite and other less common sulphides. 1. The fragmentation of whole rock by blasting has an influence on the subsequent loading, hauling and crushing operations. However, no method of calculating the frag- mentation has yet been developed. This paper gives a method of calculating the fragmen- tation for the simplest form of blasting, i.e. cratering. Cratering consists of the detonation of a spherical charge of explosive in a blasthole breaking to one free surface. This paper gives a method of calculating the extent of the system of radial cracks generated by the explosive in the rock. This system of radial cracks is then used to calculate the fragment size distribution curve from blasting. The calculated curves are shown to be in good agreement with experiment.

As part of the current NERDDC funded project studying Dragline/Hopper/ Crusher/Conveyor systems for overburden removal, an investigation was carried out to assess the feasibility of automating the swing-to-dump phase of the dragline digging cycle in order to main- tain consistent performance of spotting the bucket above the hopper prior to dumping. The study involved design of automatic position controls for the hoist, drag and swing drives and simulation of detailed mathe- matical models of the three electromechanical systems and their associated electrical control schemes. The design of the hoist and drag systems to position the bucket in the boom plane is relatively straightforward. Simulation results show fast and accurate performance, with no evidence of interaction between the two drive systems through the ropes. The design of the swing position control system involves special strate- gies to cater for variable inertia and to damp the pendulum oscillations of the bucket. The use of a bucket pendulum model and variable dynamic compensation embedded within the feedback control loop, along with optimal speed/angle slowdown trajectories, has yielded fast and damped positioning responses under simulation.

A belt of volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits and occurrences extends for over 150 km along the southern margin of the Yukon-Tanana terrane in the eastern Alaska Range. The VMS bodies occur mainly in the Jarvis Creek Glacier subterrane (JCGS), one of the highest structural/ stratigraphic levels of the Yukon-Tanana terrane. The JCGS consists of a VMS--bearing metavolcanic rock member and a metasedimentary rock member. The VMS deposits and enclosing rocks exhibit two periods of regional metamorphism.From northwest to southeast, the major VMS districts are the Bonnifield, Hayes Glacier, McGinnis Glacier, and Delta districts. The Bonnifield, Hayes and McGinnis Glacier district sulfide bodies consist of pyrrhotite and lesser amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, with or without arsenopyrite, sphalerite and galena. The larger, 800 km Delta district deposits and occurrences contain variable amounts of pyrite and pyrrhotite and lesser amounts of primarily chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, and arsenopyrite.The sulfide accumulations are interpreted as Kuroko-like deposits that formed along the submarine volcanic part of a Devonian, continental-margin igneous arc. U-Pb isotopic data from zircons from the metavolcanic rocks indicate an age of about 370 Ma (Devonian). 207Pb/204Pb ratios for sulfides from the districts are similar and indicate lead was in part derived from first cycle sediments eroded largely from Precambrian crystalline rocks. 207Pb/204Pb ratios from feldspars in Devonian metavolcanic rocks are similar to those in sulfides, and indicate incorporation of radiogenic Precambrian lead into the Devonian magmas. A Precambrian crystalline source for quartz in metasedimentary rocks is indicated by 2.3 Ga old zircons. Common-lead isotope studies of igneous phenocrysts in metaigneous rocks and sulfides in volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits indicate a unique isotopic signature. The data permit an exotic origin of the Yukon-Tanana terrane with respect to North America.

The Mt Todd Project is located 42 km northwest of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The identified mineral resource estimate for the Batman gold deposit is 66.7 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t). Proved and Probable Ore Reserves total 42.3 Mt grading 1.5 g/t. Orebody definition and reserve estimation is based on extensive percussion and diamond drilling. Exhaustive bias analysis comparing grades produced from different drilling techniques has been undertaken. Similarly, detailed check assaying programs have been run to validate grade data produced by commercial laboratories used during the exploratory drilling phase. Significant biases were established from both studies and appropriate 'corrections' were made to drillhole databases prior to final resource and reserve estimation. 3D geostatistical modelling has been utilised for resource and reserve estimation, with specialist consultants contracted for this work. Goldfields Abosso Goldfields Limited (AGL) is a Ghanaian registered company that owns and operates the Damang Gold Mine. Gold Fields Ghana Holdings Limited holds a 71.1 per cent interest in AGL. The Damang concession held by Gold Fields Ghana Holdings Limited covers a total area of 271 km2 located 40 km north of the town of Tarkwa in the south-western part of Ghana. Gold Fields as a company registered on the New York Stock Exchange is legally obliged to be SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley). Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 (SOX404) is on management assessment of internal controls. The Mineral Resource Management (MRM) function of AGL manages three Prospecting Licenses and two mining licences. At least ten pits/prospects are scattered along the two limbs of the Damang Anticline and have two main types of mineralisation notably Paleoplacer and Hydrothermal. Thus SOX404 procedures are put in place to treat each mineralisation type in the best way for reliable resource outputs and estimates. Generating auditable resources for AGL is a prime but most important function of MRM. Thus important checks are built and designed to ensure that all relevant geological and geostatistical inputs conform to procedures outlined under SOX404 requirements. More importantly sign offs are designed to ensure that technical personnel involved in all aspects of resource and reserve generation are satisfied and can be held accountable.

There are many underground mines with shaft or decline access with limited production capacity or where the mine may become uneconomical as trucking costs escalate with increasing depth of the decline. In such cases a need may exist for a shaft hoisting system which can be constructed more quickly and more economically than a shaft sunk by conventional methods. Relatively cheap small diameter shafts can be constructed by raise boring. This paper describes a simple hoisting system which has been designed to take advantage of the benefits of raise boring. The system uses twin bored raises with a double drum winder hoisting a skip in each hole. The design concept is based on 1. accepting that the raises cannot be truly straight or vertical, 2. using the raise to guide the conveyance, and 3. minimising operating, maintenance, and capital costs. The hoisting system requires a certain degree of accuracy in the alignment of the twin raises. A survey of raise boring practice showed that the required accuracy could probably be achieved with conventional techniques. Traditionally, surface coal mines in the Western United States have been limited by economics to depths between 150 to 200 feet. Utah International Inc., however, is now planning to strip coal its San Juan Mine in Northwestern New Mexico to depths ranging up to 400 feet while uncovering 20 feet of steam coal. This method is cost-competitive with nearby shallower coal deposits and underground mining of the same property. How trucks and shovels can pre-strip for a dragline, along with results of the planning process, comparison with alternate systems, capital requirements, operating costs and comparisons with other coal sources are all detailed. Also discussed are the major problems anticipated, how they might be corrected, and potential improvements to the concept. Introduction The San Juan Deep Stripping Project will be situated at Utah International's San Jean Mine. The mine is in the Four Corners region, so-called because four states enjoy a common border point about 30 miles to the northwest.(see Figure 1). ABSTRACT- I Chemotrophic bacteria, capable of oxidising inorganic species such as Fe(II) and S(-]I) for their metabolic energy, have been known for many decades and interest in these bacterial species has increased since their ability oxidise auriferous arsenopyrite ores has been demonstrated. The rate at which bacterial cultures can oxidise a solid sulphide ore is of importance but a number of difficulties arise when attempting to evaluate this oxidative activity. The two major problems are counting the number of viable bacteria present in the reactor and identifying the types of bacteria that are active in both the solid and liquid phases. Enumerating the numbers of bacteria responsible for an observed change is necessary to compare the activity of different isolates. For selection and identification of bacteria during the development stages of a project, and for monitoring an operational process, the recognition of different species will be of importance. Methods for the taxonomic discrimination of bacterial species rely on observations, different culturing techniques, and the degree of DNA base homology between isolates. A method reported recently uses IR spectroscopy for comparisons between isolates. This spectroscopic method and its application is discussed.

A new gold cyanidation assay technique has been proven for a range of ores, where it has demonstrated benefits of being: ò Accurate (reduces the typical range of assay scatter almost three-fold, and avoids common fire assay interferences). ò Fast (under one hour, providing a quantum shift in space requirement and equipment utilisation each bottle roll can provide over 15 determinations per day). ò Simple (suitable for field application, no high skill or experience requirements). ò Profitable (reduced drilling, drilling time, ore misclassification and/or double handling after mining). ò Cheap (far lower cost than Fire or Aqua Regia Assays, ie LeachWELLTM costs around 10ó for a 20 g sample at 50 per cent solids, proportionately greater for larger samples eg $1 for 200 g samples which address most nugget effect problems). ò Relevant (distinguishes economic. ie cyanide-extractable gold, the only unequivocal value to use for true resource definition, mine planning and grade control). ò Robust (rough bucket chemistry of samplers does not seriously affect results). A new development is the provision of LeachWELLTM CAS, a solution, which also contains optimum cyanide and stabiliser concentrations; and offers greater: ò Safety (the dilute cyanide solutions are stabilised to avoid generating toxic HCN vapours; and present no cyanide dust or flying chips to deal with). ò Ease (a single squirt dispenses precise quantities of the entire reagent suite, avoiding multiple weighings). ò Reduction in total reagent costs. An inter-laboratory comparison on nine ore types, using two assay techniques (Fire Assay and Aqua Regia) involving 45 laboratories, has demonstrated that LeachWELLTM 60X assays for the samples tested, were equally or more reliable than typical Fire or Aqua Regia Assays. There is particularly great benefit in applying LeachWELLTM 60X assays to richer ores in comparison to Aqua Regia assays, which appear to be prone to very significant underassaying depending on individual analyst skills, and which often suffer greater nugget effects. The major impacts for heap leaching are that: ò Using the LeachWELLTM assay technique for grade control, ore of marginal grade is not accidentally discarded to waste or visa versa due to the scatter of assay data inherent in typical small charge (25 g) fire assays. ò LeachWELLTM assays very importantly report only that gold which will be recoverable in the heap, viz that which is liberated - an important factor where the coarse crush often leaves ten per cent of gold unliberated. These impacts are of particular importance for many ores (ie most of those recovered from open pit operations and at the margins of rich ore subject to slurry processing) subjected to heap leaching as the oxide zones often present major problems of nugget effects as well as mineralisation that cannot be accurately assigned through interpretation of clear structural controls.

Research cruises by HMNZS 'Tui' (1986) and RV 'Moana Wave' (1987) investigated the geology, geophysics and seafloor mineral resources of Manihiki Plateau in the central Pacific Ocean.Manihiki Plateau is a large (500,000 km2) mid-ocean platform that rises 3000 m above the abyssal plains of surrounding ocean basins (depth -5500 m). Its foundation evolved about 112 Ma ago by massive outpouring of basaltic lavas at a plate triple junction. The plateau is blanketed by a 900 m thick sedimentary section comprising (i) mid-Late Cretaceous volcaniclastic sandstones / siltstones grading upwards to limestones / chalks and (ii) -500 m of Tertiary nanno-foram chalks and oozes. Cores from DSDP 317 drill-site on the Manihiki High Plateau indicate that the volcaniclastic sediments contain native copper and some thin beds rich in organic carbon.
