At the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, impurities toxic to the electrolytic production of zinc metal, notably arsenic and antimony, have traditionally been coprecipitated when precipitating iron as ferric hydroxide. With the development of a new lead/zinc mine at Elura, New South Wales, it was anticipated that the concentration of impurities, particularly arsenic, in the zinc sulphide concentrates treated at Risdon would increase. This suggested that an increase in the capacity of the iron purification step in the Risdon plant would be required to cope with the higher input of these impurities.Laboratory investigations showed that the additional capacity would be achieved, either by a large increase in the amount of iron used as the "collector" in the process, or by a two-stage process. The latter approach was preferred as a increase in the amount of iron precipitated would lead to much higher operating costs and overloading of the existing equipment.In the two stage procedure, acidic iron bearing solution is added to solution feeding the first stage and most of the arsenic removed from solution when iron is precipitated from solution by neutralisation with limestone. Mter separation of the precipitated solids, acidic iron bearing solution is added to the solution, and remaining arsenic removed almost completely following neutralisation by limestone.This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant results and the plant modifications required. Abrief account is also given of the operator training and acceptance in the use of the digital control facilities installed in the new plant.The new plant is working well and good solution purity is being maintained despite a substantial increase in the concentration of impurities in the raw materials.

Mining Lease 908, situated on Gorge Creek near its confluence with the present Cape River system, has been subjected to intensive recent exploration for alluvial gold.The gold is hosted by a buried palaeochannel, the Gorge Creek Lead and by an overlying remnant meander of the Cape River. The principal, if not sole, sources of gold within the Gorge Creek Lead are the northwest trending Great Australian Reef and Green's Specimen Reef systems which are situated on adjacent high ground. Lower grade gold bearing eluvial ground separates the reefs from the Gorge Creek Lead. The sources for gold within the old Cape River system channel (Canton Lead) are thought to be situated some distance upstream, one source perhaps being the Lolworth Diggings located 30 kilometres to the northwest.Exploration of previously "heavily dug" ground on both leads consisted of detailed geological mapping followed by the collection and treatment of bulk samples from eight costeans. The wash samples varied in size from 120 to 396 cubic metres. Treatment was undertaken through a commercial sized conventional wet screen and jig plant.

In Australia 'there are hidden deposits of gold, copper, tin, lead and zinc which can be found by drilling at reasonable expense in view of the imp9rtance of the objectives. Exploration of the prospects in mind would mean about a million feet of drilling. The purpose of this paper is to outline, in a technical way, some of the geological thinking that has been given to this matter. To do this, it is necessary to unify the wider ranging thoughts into some sort of coherent perspective and also into some sort of logical sequence. This will be done by treating first the geological subject material which is in fact, at the foundation of the exploratory scheme. With this base, the argument will be continued through a sequence of prospect thinking and brought to a conclusion in regard to the practical employment of geology in the drilling planning. In this knitting together of ideas, the discussion will be given substance by welding into the argument the reasoning that has been applied to the Cobar prospect. The New Occidental Gold-Mines are operating three mines at Cobar, and the writer is indebted to the Company for allowing the reference to be made. ON milling plants, where a large number of slime samples are collected each day, considerable work is involved preparing them for the assayer. The usual practice (as the material usually passes a 150-mesh screen) is to place the sample on a 30-mesh screen an 1 brush it through on to a cloth below. The sample on the cloth is mixed and a portion taken out for the assayer. A simple apparatus that would rapidly disintegrate and prepare these slime samples for the assayer was needed. The manufacturers of assayers' supplies appear to have overlooked apparatus for this class of work. To overcome the tedious preparation of slime samples by the above method, the writer devised the apparatus shown in the accompanying drawing (Fig. 1). It will be seen that the apparatus is a combination of a modified household flour sifter and a riffle sampler.The apparatus is made up in two parts, the top half consisting of a screen box carrying the disintegrator, and the bottom half a, riffle divider, the joints between the two being a slip-in fit. A lid is provided for the screen box. The disintegrator consists of an open drum, to which are soldered three rows of spring steel fingers. Each row has a number of steel fingers which, on rotation, press against the semi-circular screen in the screen box, forcing the slime particles through.To operate the apparatus an 8-in. sample tin is placed under each spout of the divider. The sample of slime, which is about 2 lb. in weight and usually in lumps, is placed in the screen box, the cover replaced, and the drum rotated about half-a-dozen times by means of the handle.The disintegrated sample is divided by the rifle divider into two portions, which are found in the tins under the spouts of the apparatus. One of these samples is taken, mixed on a sheet, and sent to the assayer.

Corrosion is a chemical or electro-chemical attack on a metal by the surrounding medium, and it can be stated in general terms that a non-corrodible metal possesses that property either because there is no chemical action between it and the medium, or because the medium reacts quickly with the metal to produce a thin protective coating.When iron or steel is attacked by dilute mineral acids, for example, the products of the reaction are soluble and the formation of a protective film cannot take place; on the other hand, rusting produces a porous film which flakes away and offers little protection to the underlying metal. However, when chromium is alloyed with iron, its resistance to corrosion is improved because the films produced on such alloys become more adherent and tenacious as the proportion of chromium is increased. The effects of detonation of downlines and downline-booster systems on lodse-poured charges of 94% porous prilled ammonium nitrate/6% fuel oil (AN/FO) were determined. Detonation stability was indicated by the initiation-failure pattern of detonating fuse witness lines located at intervals along the charge. Steel tubing was used as the confining medium. Charge diameters (d) varied between 2-21/32 and 8.1/8 in. and specific charge weights (w) of downlines between 4.0 and 93.2gr/ft. The axes of charge and downline were colinear. The minimum value of w required to cause initiation of AN/FO increased with d. When initiated by a downline only, the charge'underwentlowòorder detonation. When downline-booster systems are used, the detonation wave in the downline cuts all equatorial planes in the charge before the detonation wave in the surrounding AN/FO. If the downline itself does not cause initiation, therefore, the explosive ahead of the main detonation wave is crushed, and hence desensitised, by the radially-expanding compression wave and gases generated by the downline. The Closure Risk model was developed as a new tool to aid decision makers in the complex area of mine closure. It uses a simple analytical technique that allows the decision maker to simplify what is often a complex mine closure process into more easily managed sub components. This systematic approach ensures that critical factors in the closure process are not overlooked. It also allows the most important issues to be highlighted. The model can also be used to produce quantitative estimates of risk by weighting and prioritising the issues to produce the Closure Risk Factor (CRF). Field trials at several mine sites in the Northern Territory of Australia in 2001 tested the model. The trials confirmed that the model has significant potential as a tool for decision-makers to assess in a structured, systematic manner, the major closure risks at individual mine sites. The risks include not only environmental impacts but safety and health, community, legal, financial, technical and other issues. The trials confirmed the value of a team-based approach and the inputs of key staff including environmental, production, mine planning, and community liaison personnel as well as mine management. Although the usefulness of the qualitative component of the model was established, it was found that, due to the influence of subjectivity, the utility of the prototype model to determine quantitative risk was of limited value. Using a continuous improvement approach, improvements to the model were sought. A refined model, incorporating the Australian Standard 4360 definition of risk and facilitated in-house risk assessment sessions was developed and tested against the data obtained in the field trial. This model, while maintaining the qualitative strengths of the original, allows more accurate absolute and relative quantitative scores to be calculated. This in turn facilitates comparisons between the issues at a single site as well as between different mines.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) skarn Cu-Au deposit is the deepest explored part of the Ertsberg East Skarn System extending from the surface at 4200 m elevation to the DMLZ at 2900 to 2600 m. The DMLZ is hosted in an upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary siliciclastic and carbonate succession adjacent to the 3 Ma Ertsberg pluton. Much of the DMLZ ore is hosted by mixed assemblages of siliciclastic and dolomitised carbonate strata that have been altered to Mg-rich skarn assemblages. Unaltered equivalent strata from a 300 m cored interval in the Yellow Valley Syncline were characterised petrographically and representative samples were analysed for major element compositions. These stratigraphic and chemical units are interpreted to be responsible for the varying skarn lithologies within the DMLZ. The dominant prograde skarn assemblages are controlled by protolith composition, notably the relative abundance of quartz, dolomite, and calcite within the protolith. Models based on isochemical metamorphism of mixed assemblages of quartz and dolomite suggest that the formation of the forsterite-diopside dominant skarn assemblages resulted in the greatest amount of pore space increase. DMLZ Cu-Au concentrations were locally controlled by host lithology, with structural features providing fluid pathways that focused the mineralising fluids. The Holocene Minninup shoreline is a coastal barrier system stretching from Bunbury to Busselton, in southwestern Australia. It has developed in a microtidal swell wave environment, under the influence of the post- glacial marine transgression and Holocene sea level variation. Barrier sediments thin rapidly across a shallow shelf, and consist of quartzo-felds- pathic sands with a minor skeletal carbonate component. Holocene shelf deposits are laterally extensive sheets overlying Pleisto- cene limestone. Modern carbonate production is small. Development of the Minninup barrier system has been controlled largely by low rates of sediment input from terrigenous and carbonate sources, late Holocene sea level fluctuati,.,s, and pre-existent coastal landforms composed of Pleistocene limestone. Modern controls on sedimentation are the refracted, shoaling swell wave regime, and onshore winds, which combine to promote nett northward longshore drift. Holocene barrier systems of the southern Swan Coastal Plain are of several different types. These include prograded sequences of beach ridges overlying shoreface sediments, such as is found at Rockingham and parts of Geographe Bay, and complex polygenetic systems typified by the Leschenault Peninsula. Pre- liminary investigations of the barrier stratigraphy of the Minninup shoreline indicate that both progradational and polygenetic sequences are present. The processes involved in shoreline development and heavy mineral accumulation are being studied using aerial photograph inter- pretation, beach profile monitoring, sampling, and granulometric analysis. This will lead to an enhanced understanding of the mechanisms of heavy mineral accumulation, and assist in the development of genetic models as aids for Exploration.

Mining projects have long since presented challenges for the protection of the water environment. Lessons learnt from historical pollution incidents and increasingly stringent environmental controls have significantly improved the environmental performance of mines in developed countries. In contrast, water protection legislation and guidance in the Former Soviet Union (FSU) countries, based on the æpolluter paysÆ principle, has not promoted the prevention of water pollution, and examples of poor environmental performance in mining still exist. However, there is now evidence of emerging legislation encouraging the protection of the water environment. This paper provides an overview of water protection legislation in the Russian Federation and Armenia and highlights some of the challenges facing international mining companies developing projects. A mining case study is described, which highlights how communities in Armenia increasingly value their water environment. Here, greater public participation in development projects is playing a vital role in influencing water protection legislation. It is considered that public opinion and emerging legislation will increasingly present challenges for the development of mining projects.

The current trend in the UK towards the adoption of retreat longwall mining methods and the associated rapid development of the access drivages have exacerbated the environmental conditions experienced within these workings. There is a recognised need to improve the efficiency of the design and operation of mine ventilation systems in order to maintain an adequate environment and climate within these workings. Any improvement achieved in the quality, quantity and control of the delivered ventilation will assist in the provision of improved gas and dust dilution and climatic control. The paper presents an analysis of the psychrometric data recorded during the execution of a series of comprehensive climatic surveys conducted within two representative deep underground UK coal workings. The surveys were performed across two high production retreat longwall districts within UK Coal Ltd collieries. The surveys employed intrinsically safe psychrometric transducers and digital data-loggers to collect a continuous record of the mine climate over designated weekday production and weekend non-production periods. The transducers and data-logging units are capable of simultaneously measuring and digitally recording changes in the dry bulb temperature and the relative humidity at regular time intervals for extended periods of time.

Mineral processing is an essential component of a mine production chain and it accounts for significant proportion of the production cost. Over the past decade, significant research progress has been made in processing plant efficiency using theoretical, experimental and simulation modelling techniques. However, these studies are limited to process plant system as stand-alone units with no interactions with the mining units. In order to maximise the total mining system efficiency and more accurately simulate the system, the processing plant must be modelled as part of an integrated mining system. This becomes increasingly important in continuous surface mining systems, with limited ore processing capacity. In addition, plant efficiency is roughly estimated with known parameters or with simplistic statistical data, without regards to the stochastic processes governing these parameters, such as processing plant feed introduction. In this paper, a comprehensive model of the ore processing plant system is given and the object-oriented design (OOD) of the system is briefly introduced. The joint operation of ore processing plant system and haulage system is analysed. Numerical modelling is used to analyse the ore processing plant system under different conditions. Analysis of the results show that the optimum plant capacity is 0.7 tons/sec (2520 tons/hour). The results also show that the plant system resources cannot be fully utilised because the production rate is always less than the plant capacity. When plant capacity reaches an optimum value 0.7 tons/sec, the production rate is about 0.64 tons/sec. The underlying stochastic processes associated with plant and mine capacities cause this variability. In order to reduce this variability, there is the need to tightly set tolerances for the function variables.

This paper summarises the performance of the gold exploration industry in the Western World since 1970, with particular emphasis on the period 1985 - 2003. It identifies the number and size of major (ie >1 million ounce) primary gold discoveries made over this period by location and type of company. Estimates are also made of the likely contribution from smaller discoveries down to 0.1 million ounces. It also assesses the overall trend in the percentage of grassroot discoveries that are converted into mines, and the time taken to get them into production. By comparing the discovery data against total exploration expenditures it is possible to determine the average unit cost of finding a major gold deposit. It is significant to note that the average unit cost per discovery and per ounce of resource has tripled over the last 30 years. An attempt is made to determine the overall economic value generated by the industry. This is based on a detailed analysis of the rates of return and the Net Present Values (NPVs) of 109 major gold projects. After including an adjustment for discoveries not modelled, the NPVs are compared against the total amount of money spent on exploration to determine the value-to-cost ratio for the industry. Based on historical spot gold prices and tax rules, it is found that the return on investment for gold exploration in the Western World over the period 1985 - 2003 was around five per cent real after-tax. The returns achieved in the US and Australia was significantly higher than that for Canada. The returns also appear to have declined in recent years. With regard to the relative performance of junior versus major companies, the paper estimates that the junior sector accounted for 30 - 40 per cent of the total exploration expenditure, and were was associated with 34 per cent of the total number of major deposits, 27 per cent of the contained ounces and 25 per cent of the economic value found.

Managers are demanding efficient use of their resources and part of this demand is leading to the idea of integrated audits for Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), quality and the environment. It is possible to construct audits which test the compliance in this area with standards established by management systems and it may be that such an integrated audit of a site could reduce the time of auditing and be equally effective as three separate audits. However, this is only a maybe. To do an audit on all three aspects when they are not fully integrated results in more time wastage than doing three separate audits. But organisations are not structured around the audit process (some financial managers may query this statement). The organisational management systems are put in place to achieve the organisational goals - presumably in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

The Ravenswood Batholith in the Charters Towers -Ravenswood area of north Queensland, was formed by three main episodes of granitoid emplacement between the Early Ordovician and the Early Permian. Granite to granodiorite plutons of the first phase of intrusions in the Early to Middle Ordovician, probably formed by partial melting of a thin continental crust as a result of the emplacement of mafic material derived from the mantle. Some of this mafic material subsequently intruded the Ordovician granitoids as gabbro to diorite complexes. The early granitoids were deformed and metamorphosed prior to emplacement of second phase granodiorite to tonalite plutons in the Late Silurian to Early Devonian. These later plutons have generally not been deformed or recrystallised. Geochemical and isotopic data suggest the Siluro-Devonian plutonism may have been generated by a partial melting of the tholeiitic material emplaced in the lower crust during the Ordovician. A third intrusive phase consists principally off Late Carboniferous to Early Permian gabbro-granite complexes, high level granite to granodiorite complexes, and rhyolitic plugs and diatremes near the batholith margin. Gold mineralisation in the batholith is associated with two major events: mesothermal vein formation in the Early Devonian and porphyry types in the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian.

The outbreak of open fires underground cause disturbances to the conditions of the mine ventilation process. Thermal and chemical effects due to fire create unsteady, transient states in airflow and the spread of combustion products in the mine ventilation network. Changes in airflow have an influence on the fire, constituting a sort of feed-back between the fire and the ventilation process. This paper deals with a numerical simulation method, which enables the determination of transients caused by fires. The mathematical model, of the simulation method considered, has been based upon a: simple model of combustion of fuel in the airway, unsteady exchange of heat between the fire, airflow and surrounding rocks, airflow in mine ventilation networks and the theory of heatflow in the rocks. Initial and boundary conditions allow the determination of a set of parameters describing the airflow, the propagation of combustion products, the tempera- ture of the fire and flow etc. due to the fire. The simulation method, facilitates a graphical presentation of the spread of combustion products throughout the network. The simulation method has been prepared for an IBM PC/AT Computer.

The ocean floor, often called the last frontier, is increasingly discussed in terms of its resource potential û from near shore building aggregate and placer deposits to massive sulfide orebodies in the deeper ocean. Consequently there is an increasing incentive to mine the seafloor. But, do we have the social license to explore and mine the seafloor? Does this nascent industry have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? And what should be done? To answer some of these questions, the Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship has explored the social viability of an expanded seafloor exploration and mining (SEM) industry inAustralia. The results show that there are significant geological and environmental data gaps and that, in the absence of sufficient information, stakeholder reaction to the prospect of an SEM industry expansion may be reactionary and negative. This uncertainty means that the perception of risk from the industry is variable and often dependent on individual values. The acceptability of an expansion to the SEM industry is currently precarious, in particular due to the high levels of uncertainty regarding the environmental impacts of seafloor activity. While there are existing federal regulatory frameworks and government processes for the licensing of seafloor mineral exploration and extraction, there is little precedent in the application and implementation of these regulations. The future viability of the industry will be highly dependant on AustraliaÆs ability to improve the knowledge-base underpinning its regulatory regime and also to generate open and transparent communication channels between stakeholders. It will also be dependent on the SEM industryÆs ability to communicate an acceptable value proposition to society. This proposition will need to include the relative impacts of terrestrial and marine mining, the alternative potential uses of the ocean and the multi-use conflict that SEM might engender. In a time of changing rainfall patterns and in the light of recent tailings dam failures, there is closer environmental scrutiny for proposed tailings dam construction or expansion. Therefore the elimination of the traditional tailings dam could provide both environmental and cost benefits to an operation. One method to dewater tails is using pressure filtration to achieve lower moistures than what is currently available using other dewatering technologies. Further benefits include a higher rate of filtrate recovery, reuse of waste material and the potential for dry stacking of the filtered tailings cake, thereby minimising both risk and cost. This paper chronicles the replacement of two existing belt filter presses with a single McLanahan recessed plate filter press to dewater a tailings stream at a Bacchus Marsh site. It covers the slurry testing, equipment selection, installation, commissioning and operation of the filter press to achieve the following objectives:• removing the current tailings dam and slimes cells from the existing process to minimise failure risk and reduce the cost of a dam upgrade, as well as operational and maintenance costs• free up the surface area which was previously occupied by tailings dams and slimes cells• recover additional water to be returned to the process• reduce flocculent usage• reduce truck movements and handling.The project’s owner also expects to reduce carbon emissions by over 3000 t over the lifetime of operation as well as substantially reducing operating expenditure. By recognising the carbon reduction benefits, the project owner was able to successfully achieve partial funding through the Voluntary Waste Industry Protocol.An unanticipated, but as yet unquantifiable, bonus for the project was to seek an offtake agreement for the tailings thereby allowing the tailings to be considered a valuable source of beneficiated clay suitable for the construction industry.CITATION:Godwin, P and Williams, R, 2017.
