The Siana gold-silver deposit of Surigao del Norte, Mindanao, Philippines is perhaps one of the most complex in the world, being related to an ancient suture zone known as the Philippine Fault. Early accounts described the deposit as epithermal, consisting of an upper limestone replacement orebody and a lower vein type deposit hosted in andesite. Recent field and laboratory studies, in correlation with the latest findings on the archipelago's tectonic evolution, however, led to the present interpretation of the Siana ore deposit's origin as involving both syngenetic and epigenetic processes, with limestone breccia, similar to the Cow Head Breccia of Newfoundland, as the principal host to mineralization.

The iron blast furnace is the most widely used and efficient producer of liquid iron. The integrated steel works is however under environmental pressure largely due to emissions from sintering and coking. The combustion of coke breeze during sintering contributes to greenhouse gases (eg carbon dioxide) and is the source of much of the emissions of SOx and NOx. Coke breeze, the fines produced during coking of coal, is also suffering supply issues as coke demand increases while coking capacity is constrained by environmental concerns.CSIRO Minerals has been investigating the use of wood biomass/char as a substitute for coke during sintering. Wood biomass, or char produced from it, is an attractive carbon source as carbon dioxide can be sequestered into growing biomass prior to combustion. It has great potential to reduce the emissions from integrated steelworks and improve their environmental acceptability. Harvested biomass/char is also a renewable and sustainable resource. Samples of pine wood flour, sawdust and red gum wood char were characterised and used in small-scale granulation and sintering tests. Red gum char granulated as well as coke and could be used to make acceptable sinter. Large-scale sinter pot test were conducted with char to produce sufficient sinter for ISO quality tests and calculate sintering performance parameters. Results showed that coke could be completely substituted by red gum char during sintering without loss of quality and with actual improvements in sintering performance. Furthermore, gas analyses made during sintering showed that there were significant reductions in SOx and NOx when char was substituted for coke. It is anticipated that the results reported here, although preliminary, will stimulate an increased effort into further research on the use of char in iron ore sintering.

Potential hlghwaJl mining reserves in Australia are large, but geotechnical and operating conditions are quite different from those where highwall mining has evolved in the USA. In order to achieve safe and effective resource recovery, equipment and procedures should be developed to penetrate 250 m in the Australian mining environment. This paper identifies key auributes to be incorporated in such machinery and methodology. These suggestions are intended to promote discussion on innovations to satisfy Australian requirements for highly productive, safe and environmentally acceptable techniques.

We are all no doubt aware that with today's high costs it is more important than ever to get the maximum possible return on capital invested in the mining industry. Screening is an important and often costly process in the size classification of industrial minerals and for this reason alone it is essential for both managers and operators to fully understand what type of screening equipment is best suited for a particular application and why. The advent of elastic materials such as rubber and polyurethane have added a new dimension to the process of screening. It is important to understand why the physical properties of these materials can be of benefit in the screening process, and recognise which type of screening applications best take advantage of these orooerties.

Broken Hill South Limited's discovery of phosphate deposits in the northwest of Queensland in 1966 prompted intensive exploration which has proved phosphate rock in excess of 2,000 million tons at ten separate deposits.Systematic exploration for phosphate in Australia was initiated by the company in 1964. Early in 1966, an investigation of oil wells in the Georgina Basin in the Northern Territory and Queensland revealed widespread anomalous phosphate in early Middle Cambrian Beetle Creek Formation and Thorntonia Limestone. Phosphorites recognized in oil wells in the southeastern part of the Basin, Queensland, led to the discovery of the Duchess deposits. Exploration of the Beetle Creek Formation since 1966 has disclosed nine other sizeable deposits north of Duchess around the eastern margin of the Basin. The Lady Annie and the adjoining Lady Jane deposits, by reason of their location, 160 miles south of the Gulf of Carpentaria, are expected to be the first to be brought into production.Beneficiation testing and engineering investigations commenced in 1967. Transport between the deposits and various port sites in the Gulf of Carpentaria has been extensively studied and a slurry pipeline as a means of transport to a deep water island port, is now being investigated.

Traditional quality control procedures for aggregates production within the quarry industry rely on off-line laboratory analysis, resulting in poor performance and inconsistent product quality. A high speed on-line aggregate classification system is described here. A product sampling system directs aggregate through an inspection chamber where a novel imaging system digitises the particle geometry. Data processing algorithms extract dimensional data and image features, while a neural network classifier assigns a qualitative shape descriptor to each rock particle. This system provides each sampled batch with a complete analysis of size and shape distributions, complementing a new generation of cone crusher technology to maximise product quality and plant efficiency.

Despite the importance and usefulness of basicity in metallurgical slags, the optimum quantitative expression of it has remained elusive, partly due to the fact that the precise concept of basicity has not been properly clarified. The two basic approaches to the concept of basicity are the Lux-Flood, which perceives basicity in terms of the activity of the free oxide ion, aO2-, and the Lewis, which perceives basicity in terms of the ability to donate negative charge. The former has been almost universally adopted in the area of metallurgical slags, while the latter has been increasingly accepted in the field of glass chemistry. In this paper, some difficulties of the Lux-Flood approach are pointed out, including the need for indirect measures of aO2-, which have proliferated in recent years. Accordingly, it is suggested that the Lewis approach has a good deal to commend it, and that the quantification of it in terms of optical basicity is the best measure of basicity available, which should therefore be more widely applied in metallurgical slags than it currently is. The fact that there are intrinsic problems in evaluating the optical basicities for the transition metal oxides is acknowledged, and a new scale is recommended. The patterns of iso-optical basicity lines in ternary systems are shown to agree well with the pattern of iso-activity and iso-capacity lines under appropriate conditions.

Shaft guide reaetions in No. 2 Ore Shaft, Mount Isa Mines Limited, have been reduced to a low order of magnitude by the use of self aligning slippers and spring loaded guide rollers. Before commissioning the new 4500 h.p. winder at No. 2 Ore Shaft in January, 1958, it was realised that the increase in hoisting speed from 1800 to 2650 ft/min. would cause high shaft guide reactions which would be increased further when the elongated 12 ton skips replaced the existing 7 ton skips.The Cambridge accelerometer was used to measure the shaft guide reactions and to confirm that progressive skip modifications were resulting in reduced reactions. The skip modifications were completed in 4 weeks.INTRODUCTIONIn 1956 an expansion programme was initiated to increase production from 5000 to 11000 tons per mining day. At No. 2 Ore Shaft the 1500 h.p. winder operated at 1800 ft./min. and hoisted a 7 ton capacity skip. The new 4500 h.p. winder operates at 2650 ft./min. and hoists a 12 ton capacity skip. No. 2 Ore shaft is equipped with two 5 ft. by 5 ft. hoisting compartments (Fig. 1) and any increase in skip capacity meant an abnormally long skip. This feature, coupled with the increase in hoisting speed, could have caused very high shaft guide reactions. Before commissioning the 4500 h.p. winder, a Cambridge accelerometer was borrowed from the University of Adelaide and was used to measure the shaft guide reactions. Rather than carry out an extensive shaft timbering programme, the skips were modified by fitting cushioned guide shoes and spring loaded guide rollers (Fig. 1). Testing commenced in February, 1958, and was completed in March, 1958.

The phrase "Total-Energy" has, during the past few years, become widely used to describe a wide range of very different operations. However, if accurately described they all have one basic factor in common - energy usage is optimised with the prime mover being powered by gas or oil to generate shaft horsepower and the products of combustion being put to some use. The item which distinguishes a Total Energy system from any other engine or turbine driven project is that orate pains are taken to utilize the waste heat, whether this be in the form of exhaust gases and/or engine jacket ling water. n areas where grid supplies of electricity are readily available, the economics of most projects undoubtedly hinge upon the successful application of waste heat. However, there has been a growing awareness of other benefits, such as reliability of supply, which can be incorporated into the system. In particular these factors sway managements of hospitals and companies with complex computer facilities to examine closely the feasibility of Total Energy, Consequently, in America for example, where many systems have proved themselves the list of applications is wide - shopping centres, apartment blocks, office buildings, airline terminals, universities, schools, motels. And these do not cover the industrial sectors where the range is wider. The total number in North America is now approximately 500 and this to some extent-speaks for itself. In Australia, the real work involved in carrying out feasibility studies for Total Energy is only just beginning. 'in some quarters, the concept is not well received in that it is too new. Therefore, a typical approach is to play safe and wait until some other company has proved its operation "under Australian conditions". This is certainly a realistic approach when considering something revolutionary but as far as Total Energy.is"concerned all the individual components and sometimes combinations, (engines, generators, boilers, air-conditioning units) have been in operation for many years. The only innovation is that they are now all being brought together under one roof. This should not be forgotten when the question "where can I see something like this operating?" is asked.

This paper examines the broader implications of recent and ongoing changes in mineral resource managementå and reporting practices and the impact that these might have on mining companies. It is likely that an International Reporting Code will be developed in the near future, based on a number of National codes produced in recent years. However, this is only part of the reporting story, as an International Code brings with it a range of further issues to resolve. For the Code to be effective, there needs to be international recognition and perhaps licensing of Competent Persons and an expanded base of sponsoring professional bodies. Also, in an increasingly global business, shareholders, regulators and other interested parties need to know and understand the general processes involved in resource and reserve estimation and reporting in order to recognise companies that maintain the highest standards. There is a current trend towards greater scrutiny of company performance in a range of areas under the banner of corporate governance, and many changes are happening that will place greater disclosure burdens on all companies in the future. Good corporate governance means management of company assets for the benefit of the stakeholders. For a mining company, there is no greater asset than its mineral resources and reserves and directors are just as responsible for effective management of their mineral resources as they are for financial good practice. The paper looks at the relevance of corporate governance principles to mineral resource management and the changes that this could bring to the way that companies deal with regulators, shareholders, financiers and others. Finally, increased scrutiny and further regulation inevitably means greater effort by the industry and higher costs. Despite this the author believes that there are substantial offsetting benefits to be gained by companies prepared to take the initiative in improving resource management practices and communicating these improvements to shareholders. In order to achieve the benefits however, the industry needs to fully engage in the changes that are taking place û setting its own standards and working with the regulators rather than sitting back and being legislated against. Mineral resource reporting provides a good model of how this process can work and there will be other opportunities in the coming years as the industry seeks to develop best practice in mineral resource management. Facies associations in the Okiduse Volcanics, woodlark island, suggest that two major volcanic centres erupted synchronously during the Middle Miocene. These centres are referred to as the Watou Mountain Eruptive Centre and the Uvarakoi Caldera. The Watou Mountain Eruptive Centre, centred on Boganuse Mountain in the Okiduse Range, was a typical, moderate-sized composite volcano (or stratovolcano). The seq-uence is readily divisible into lava (Boganuse lava unit), breccia (Nikuben breccia unit) and epiclastic (Talpas sandstone unit) dominant facies, typical of composite volcanoes. These facies girdle Boganuse Mountain and they are interpreted to represent vent, cone forming and ring plain associat-ions, respectively. These facies indicate a reconstructed volcano of approximately 1,700m height with a basal diameter of 7km. The presence of limited exposures of intrusive associated with the vent facies (Kuike'beimmicrodiorite) suggests that the volcano is only partially dissected. The Uvarakoi Caldera is a felsic volcanic system contrasting with the mafic Watou Mountain centre.

The geological and economic aspects of the known deposits of uranium in southern Africa are described. Processes influencing uranium mineralisation in the relevant geological environments are elaborated upon in order to define fundamental characteristics of mineralisation in the sub-continent and identify potential areas for the location of new deposits. Several areas, namely the Damara orogenic belt and its extension in Zambia and Zaire, the Bushveld zone, and the terrains of uranium fertilisation from the mantle have a high probability of hosting uranium deposits which are yet to be discovered. Uranium resources of the southern African region have been estimated and production forecasted to the year 2000. This geographic region contains one quarter of WOCA's resources in the Reasonably Assured Resources and Estimated Additional Resources - Category I exploitable at less than 130/kg U. On this resource base, it has the potential to maintain its position as the leading exporter of uranium in the world with a production of 13 350 t U308 by the end of the century. Zambia and Zaire are expected to join South Africa and Namibia as uranium producers in the next decade, with their combined share of projected production being in the order of 10%.

As part of a broad program to optimise the performance of their grinding circuit, BHP Billiton Cannington have installed an OCS¬ Expert system together with three VisioRockÖ online particle size analysis cameras. The main purpose of the system is to stabilise grind size and feed to the flotation circuit. This particular application of OCS¬ is the first installation to incorporate Metso Minerals Process Technology-Asia PacificÆs (MMPT-AP) Dynamic SAG/AG Mill Model, which is able to predict numerous mill parameters that were previously unable to be measured with the existing plant instrumentation. Integrated into the logic of the control algorithm are online vision based, particle size measurements of the AG mill feed and recycle crusher product. This paper will describe the history of the project from initiation to date, the model and OCS¬ logic configuration, and demonstrate the significant benefits realised at Cannington mine.

Coal mining in the Pittsburgh coal seam, in the eastern United States, began in the late-1700s. Since that time numerous mining technologies have been used throughout the basin. Environmental concerns, particularly mine discharge quality, have only been considered since the early-1970s. During the last 20 years, many of the larger underground mines have closed and are now either flooding or already flooded. In order to understand the consequences and potential future effects of this flooding, mine mapping of the basin has been compiled utilising a geographic information system (GIS) with an emphasis on locating barrier pillars between mines. Mine flooding has been monitored at numerous sites utilising pressure transducers and data loggers. These data have been combined with historical data from mining companies and structure contour maps to yield chronological flooding maps of the basin from 1980 to present. Utilising these maps and the indicated flooding rates, future discharge locations have been identified along with estimates of when these discharges are likely to occur. Related work has identified barrier pillar hydraulic conductivities and vertical infiltration rates as a function of overburden thickness. All of this information has been integrated into a groundwater flow model that simulates mine flooding. This model is useful in defining mine to mine interactions as the various mines fill with water, and the testing of various flooding scenarios. The model will be used in evaluating mine discharge rates and evaluating the options for regional mine drainage treatment.

"The benefits of measuring blast movement to reduce ore loss and dilution have been recognised by many people for many years and various methods have been used with limited success. Geita Gold Mine is running the pilot study on the blast movement monitoring (BMM) system which is a revolutionary method developed and patented by the University of Queensland and Blast Movement Technology (BMT). The system consists of directional transmitters placed within the shot prior to blasting, which are then located after the blast with a special detector and then the data is processed with purpose-designed software.As part of continuous improvement on grade control, Geita Gold Mine is running a research project in all operating pits with the objective of: quantifying the three-dimensional blast muck pile movement and finally utilise the movement data to define post-blast ore polygons and incorporate the movement dynamics during block modelling,quantify the potential savings for ore loss and dilution,improve mine geologists knowledge of blast dynamics, andstimulate greater co-operation between drill and blast engineers and geologists to achieve optimum blast designs.To any operation with selective mining, it is critical to the economics of an operation to control ore loss and dilution; getting it wrong will result in significant lost revenue. Implementation of ongoing pilot study on electronic balls as determinant on blast movement dynamics on ore would be of longer term solution and big investment pay back.CITATION:Mwijage, F, 2012. A novel system has been developed using computer imaging techniques to make on-line measurements of material on a moving conveyor. Meas- urements of the mass or volume of conveyor materials are important in large open pit mining operations such as those operated by the State Elec- tricity Commission of Victoria (SECV). Such on-line measurements can be used for monitoring and controlling the production and transport of coal or overburden, and to assist in maintaining production levels. This paper describes a conveyor burden volume measurement system which is currently under development at the Research and Development Department of the SECV and although targeted initially for use in the Commission's open cut mines, the system is suitable for use on any open conveyor system. A basic developmental system has been built to demon- strate the viability of the technique used and further work on the system is planned. The measurement technique and the major components which have been developed as part of the system are described, some comparisons are drawn with other existing measurement systems and potential errors and future development are discussed.

A chemical study of the petrographic components of Greta (Maitland) coal, carried out by the Metropolitan Gas Co. (Melbourne), has revealed an anomaly in the composition of the durain which was thought to warrant petrological investigation.The original study, by the Metropolitan Gas Co., extended over eight shipments of coal received during the winter of 1943.The percentages of the several petrographic components were eslimated by careful handpicking of large samples of each shipment, and analyses were made of the handpicked components, which were also tested as to their gas-making and coking properties.The results are summarised in Tables 1 and 2. At first sight the components of the Greta coal bear a general resemblance in composition to those of other bituminous coals of similar rank, apart from a notable richness in volatiles, which is a distinctive feature of Greta coal. The durain has a typically higher ash content, and lower volatile content than the clarain (Table 1); and the coking behaviour of the four components is typical (Fig. 4).When, however, the analyses of Table 1 are re-calculated on a dry, ash-free basis, an anomaly appears: the clarain and the durain, on this 'pure coal' basis, have practically identical compositions, with the durain containing a slightly higher proportion of volatiles than the clarain (cf. Table 3); but the tar yield of these two components is very different (Table 1). Re-calculated on a dry, ash-free basis, the yield from the clarain is 18.9 gallons of tar per ton, while, that of the durain is 29.0 gallons per ton. The gas derived from the durain is correspondingly richer in illuminants (CH etc) and poorer in hydrogen than that from the clarain (Table 2), and is also notably richer in nitrogen.That the composition of the Greta durain is consistent is proved by the analyses of Table 3, in which the compositions of the respective durains and clarains of eight separate shipments of coal are compared. In most bituminous coals, the durain contains several per cent less volatile matter than the associated clarain, and high volatile content in a durain usually indicates a durain rich in spores.

Many metallurgical beneficiation and primary concentrating processes rely upon discrimination of products from gangue based on particulate density of the different minerals and combinations of minerals in an ore. The basic definition of density is simple, but the apparent density that minerals exhibit when in the environment of commercial densimetric separation processes is more complex and is ill-defined. Measurement of the apparent density displayed by minerals in their separation situation is essential if modelling of plant performance is to be meaningful or when comparison of an existing operation with a æperfectÆ separation constitutes a part of an audit or of a plant control function. Seven methods of dividing ore samples into discreet density fractions are examined and criticised in this paper. The shortcomings, difficulties and potential errors arising from the use of each method are evaluated. Most of the techniques described have been used by the author and generally their faults are understood and the resultant first-hand experience has been used to overcome these faults. A simple new computer-assisted technique for developing meaningful densimetric data is described.

The working of alluvial deposits has from all times been a popular form of mining, not only from the simplieity of its operations, but also, in its more primitive stages, from the possibility of carrying it on without large capital, without skilled lahour, expensive plant, long terms of preparatory work, or, in fact, any other requisite than a shovel, a dish, and a stout pair of arms. It is possibly one of the oldest industries, and probably, also, it has been one of the most profitable.In tbe Australian States the happy days of rid alluvial deposits, when gold was to be hltd for the shovelling, are now almost over. The lust for gold has caused almost every corner of the world to be ransacked, and the more easily earned wealth to he exhausted: for the most part there remain now those deposits only which are too poor to be profitably worked by means of the implements and methods of old times. But, though the deposits have become poorer, the keen inventiveness of man has devised means whereby such large quantIties can be treated at a cost so low that he can still make a profit out of them. In this article, out of the many means devised, three only will be referred to-viz., hydraulic sluicing, bucket dredging, and hydraulic dredging. All mining may be divided into three principal operations-1st, the breaking down and conveying of the ground to where it is to be treated for the recovery of the metallic values, 2nd, the treatment of the material for the recovery of those values; and, 3rd) the removal of the worthless material or tailings. In all mining the object is to effect these three processes for the least expenditure of money commensurate with the highest degree of efficiency.

Vibration analysis for diagnosis of machines is a powerful instrument for condition monitoring. Especially for diagnosis of antifriction bearings various equipment and techniques have been developed and are available. The envelope analysis is the most reliable method for bearing diagnosis. Different bearing failures lead to different patterns of the envelope spectrum. Checking the amplitudes of characteristic bearing frequencies is mostly not sufficient for a reliable diagnosis. Therefore human experts compare the pattern of the spectrum with typical patterns of bearing defects. In this paper a diagnosis system is presented which imitates this action of human experts. Using a neural net the system not only distinguishes typical bearing defects but also detects unbalance, beating of disengaged machine parts and other kinds of machine failures.
