During the processing of gold, effluents that are discharged into the tailing dams contain free cyanide, metal cyanide complexes of zinc, copper, iron, etc and their oxidised products such as ammonia, cyanate and thiocyanate. A knowledge of how different cyanides behave in the solution is vital to metallurgists working in the area of cyanide waste treatment. Although the free cyanide ion is not stable in aqueous solutions and is expected to degrade in a natural environment by atmospheric oxidation, the metal cyanide complexes, especially of iron, are very stable. The CHEMIX program from the THERMODATA package, developed by the CSIRO Division of Mineral Products, was used to evaluate various copper-cyanide and iron-cyanide systems. The simulation of these systems show how the free cyanide and cyanide complexes behave at different conditions of solution composition and acidity (pH).

Oxygen was in restricted use at Port Kembla until tonnage oxygen became available for steelmaking in the open hearth furnaces. In adopting the new process various modifications to furnace design and operation were necessary and some of these, including increase in roof height and variation in firing and draft control, are discussed.The design of oxygen lances is also discussed and various steelmakingtechniques considered.Steel production increased with oxygen roof lancing-one- furnace producing 8,507 tons in one week-but new problems, such as rate of refractory wear, and disposal of fumes, were created.Design of future open hearth oxygen furnaces is predicted.INTRODUCTIONIn the post-war era, the availability of "tonnage" oxygen caused a major revolution in steelmaking techniques. Various pneumatic processes showed that steel can be madeat a very fast rate and that oxygen steelmaking can be applied to open hearth furnaces. Methods used are surface impingement with roof lances, bath injection with door lances, flame enrichment with fuel firing, mixed gas and oxygen firing, and enrichment of normal combustion air by oxygen injection into the flue systems.Owing to its previous restricted availability and high cost, oxygen was used in rather small quantities in the open hearth furnaces at Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd.(A.I. & S.), Port Kembla, until about the middle of 1960.At that time tonnage oxygen became available and roof lancing commenced on No. 33 furnace at No. 2' open hearth shop.

Ok Tedi Mining Limited commenced construction in mid-1981 of facilities and infrastructure to mine and process gold ore at Mt Fubilan in Papua ew Guinea. Production ofgold began more or less on schedule in mid-1984 although design capacity is yet to be achieved. Due to geotechnical problems, two important items of infrastructure, hydropower and permanent tailings disposal, are not yet in place. Current low metal prices make it likely that copper facilities will be postponed.The deposit compriscs a leached gold capping overlying copper sulphide porphyry mineralisation containing significant gold and molybdenum. Mining is by open pit methods. The soft leached capping gold ore is ripped and dozed, loaded by hydraulic shovel and trucked to a dump pocket. After passing a large semi-autogenous mill of nominal capacity of I, I00 tonnes per hour, the ore is treated by the carbon-inpulp process, with a gravity circuit to recover coarse gold. The final product is 12 kg dore bullion bars.At present, all tailings are detoxified with hydrogen peroxide; after cycloning, the coarse fraction is stored, and the slime fraction discharged into the river system; expected environmental impact is acceptable. Investigations for a suitable dam site for a permanent tailings system are still underway.Peak 'I. hour power demand for Stage I is 17 MW, presently supplied by a diesel alternator power station and a 2 MW mini hydropower plant.Initial access to the base camp at Tabubil was only by air. Eventually a road was pushed through 134 km from the river port at Kiunga (where port facilities have been constructed) and a further 23 km to Mt Fubilan.Roads are constructed of compacted gravel and crushed limestone generally underlain by geofabric. Eight major steel bridges were built.The town of Tabubil has been established, including housing, airport, shops, offices, schools and all facilities.Environmental studies have been extensive and a detailed monitoring program is maintained. Ok Tedi Mining Limited is making considerable efforts to train Papua New Guineans and to foster local business.

Strata bolting/dowelling reinforcement techniques are being reintroduced into the mines of the National Coal Board. There are strong reasons for the selection of the full hole anchorage principle of bolting and for the development of the wood/resin dowel. There are strong reasons also for the measurement of strata bed separation as the method of assessing the effectiveness of a roof bolting system. There are several designs of bolts. Instruments have been developed for investigation and control purposes. Different drilling and bolting machines have been employed in trial sites. In addition comparative laboratory model work has been conducted on simple non-bolted and bolted systems.

A methodology for modelling dense medium cyclones is presented for cyclones operating under conditions which avoid particle interference or apex crowding. Particle interference and apex crowding are shown to result in less efficient separations and represent undesirable regimes of dense medium cyclone operation. In order to avoid apex crowding, suitable medium to ore ratios and apex diameters should be used. Cyclone density differentials should be kept below approximately 400kg.m 3 to limit loss of efficiency due to excessive particle recirculation within the cyclone. The relationship between size-by-size partition curves shows that the flow split and density of the medium within a cyclone can be related to two new parameters, the pivot partition number and pivot density. The parameters are common to each partition curve in any set of size-by-size data and are mathematically related to the familiar performance characteristics, ecart probable (Ep) and separation density. The resulting expression confirms that the Ep and separation density are directly related.

The design of crawler-mounted conveyor belts installed for the handling of brown coal in open cuts is described.INTRODUCTIONThe State Electricity Commission of Victoria operates two brown coal open cuts at Yallourn, Victoria. The larger of these cuts produces n million tons per year of brown coal containing 67 per cent. moisture, and the smaller, at Yallourn North, produces 1-1 million tons of coal, with a moisture content of 50 per cent. A further open cut at Morwell with projected output of 9-10 million tons per year is in the course of development. In the larger Yallourn open cut coal is excavated by means of conventional bucket chain and bucket wheel dredgers and transport is by electric locomotives and saddle bottom trucks running on 90 cm. gauge railway tracks. At Yallourn North, coal until recently has been largely won by 3i and 5 cu. yd. electric shovels and transported by large diesel-enginedmotor trucks. The difficulty of keeping these trucks in operation during the winter periods owing to the v.ery wet conditions and the high cost of maintenance of these vehicles led to the introduction of a moving face conveyor system.EXISTING CONVEYOR INSTALLATION AT YALLOURN NORTHA conveyor system employing a 36-in. belt running at a speed of 400 ft. per minute and having a nominal capacity of 425 tons per hour with 50-h.p. drive units, was selected as appropriate for the output of the open cut. Gold occurs at Mt. Charlotte associated with a stockwork of pyritised quartz veins in Unit 8 of the Golden Mile Dolerite. The ore- body is massive, 200m long and 40m wide and has been proved to over 600m below surface. Mining is by sublevel ring drill stoping with the ore recovered by diesel powered equipment. Ore reserves are based on traverses of diamond drill holes oriented to produce an equal intersection width on the two principal sets of quartz veins. Assay and geological boundaries are marked on each drill section and this boundary is transferred to mine plans and cross sections. Ring-drilling patterns are based on the cross sections and the resulting mining outline is transferred back to the drilling sections. The mine ore reserve is calculated from the mining outline.

External pressures are being exerted on busi- ness, and especially the mining and energy in- dustries, as never before. These pressures are burdensome, they emerge in unique forms, and they constitute an entirely new operating environ- ment for business. They pose one of the signi- ficant challenges to senior management today. To cope with these pressures-which we have termed the new public realities-we must deal more effectively with the media, the public, and government. However, before examining methods for improvement, it is essential to understand the nature of these new public realities and par- ticularly their determinants-the underlying eco- nomic, sociological, political, and international events and trends which have shaped them. Previously the productive element of society had only to concern itself with what might be termed `conventional realities' : the costs of labour, equipment, and land, as well as marketing and distribution factors.

The middle-Devonian Dulladerry Volcanics is a complex of A-type, predominantly rhyolitic ignimbrites, lavas and breccias. They form a NNW trending belt some 90 km long and 10-20 km wide, east of Parkes, NSW. The volcanics are dominated by widespread ignimbrite units with minor basalts, sediments and rarer andesites. The volcanics were deposited in a sub-aerial, possibly continental rift setting and are similar in chemistry and age to the Eden - Comerong - Yalwal Volcanic Zone (EVZ) on the NSW south coast. The volcanics exhibit an unusual Atype chemistry (high Zr, Y, Nb, REE, Ga). This distinctive composition illustrates that the volcanics are not comagmatic with the adjacent Yeoval Granite Complex or Eugowra Granite, which show typical I-type fractionation trends. Epithermal gold veins occur in basalt and andesite in the Dulladerry Volcanics at Mt Aubrey (Hopf, 1992), near Baldry. Alteration also occurs in the Glen Isla and Red Hill areas, with epithermal sinter recognised at Glen Isla. Copper and minor gold mineralisation occurs at the contact of rhyolite and andesite at Reedy Creek, but is not of epithermal origin. The analogous EVZ also contains several epithermal gold fields and it is this style of mineralisation which provides the most prospective targets in the Dulladerry Volcanics. Although the Dulladerry Volcanics also contain high background levels of REE and metals such as Zn and Pb, the general lack of fractionation and water-undersaturated character of A-type magmas does not lend itself to the development of significant concentrations of these elements into a fluid phase and mineralisation. The prospectivity of A-type volcanics in general could not be regarded as high. Aberfoyle Ltd. has utilised a variety of flotation technologies in the Hellyer concentrator in North-Western Tasmania. Hellyer ore, with its slow flotation rates and low rate differentials between values and gangue, requires the use of long residence times and low air consumption rates in the flotation circuit. The operation of the flotation circuit, with a nominal residence time of 7 hours, has necessitated the development of a control system to provide continuity through operator shift changes. Cell selections at Hellyer varied from the 54 m3 hybrid Dorf Oliver / Maxwell (DO/MX) cells, to smaller 32 m3 Maxwell cells, conventional Don-Oliver 300 (8.5 m3) and 600 (17 m3) trough cells, and a column cell. The advantages of the large cells included low specific power consumptions and a low capital cost. However, problems with mixing and the maintenance of consistent froth depth have been identified in the hybrid DO/MX cells. Short circuiting in the trough cells was apparent, causing a considerable reduction in metallurgical performance. The column cell performs to expectation, although the application is not ideal.

Every text book for blasting in Japan says that Hauser's law can be applied for practice. But recently it came true that there was no historical record about him and no actual datum of his own or other's to testify. According to his theory, the funnel ratio N = r/W in crater test is inversely proportional to the rock strength and proportional to the explosive amount: where r is the radius of crater and W is the burden. But experiment showed the opposite result, and revealed new information. Two kinds of experiment, crater test and boulder blasting of mortar, were carried out to investigate the effects of rock properties on blasting. The material used for test 1 and test 2 was a mortar block (60cm)3 cube, 4 vertical faces of which were used for crater test. The results from Test 1 and test 2 were summarized as follows. The funnel ratio ranges between 2.5 to 4.5 in proportion to rock strength and burden. The standard ratio of 1, reported by Hauser, was not observed in any instances. It was also noted that the funnel ratio is independent of the explosive amount. The material used for boulder blasting, test 3, was a mortar block (40cm)3 cube, in the middle of which was located a vertical borehole for the explosive charge. The results of test 3 were as follows. The necessary explosive amount for boulder blasting is in inverse proportion to the mortar strength. Fragmentation and throw are proportional to the mortar strength.

A survey of derelict and active alluvial tin and sapphire mines in the Emmaville area of northern N.S.W. as the first step in a pro- gramme of similar surveys to be undertaken throughout the State by the State Pollution Control Commission is presented. Thirty nine individual mine sites in the study area were included in the survey and an assessment made of the current level of impact on the environment at each site by assigning values of "magnitude" and "importance" to a number of impacting factors. Results are pre- sented in matrix form and mine sites ranked in order of impact "importance". Examples of alluvial tin, underground tin/arsenic and alluvial sapphire operations are discussed in detail and rehabilitation programmes proposed for implementation.

Plant data are presented which indicate a relationship between flotation rate constants and pulp density in zinc cleaning circuits at Broken Hill. The data were obtained from down the bank sampling of cleaner and recleaner banks at North Broken Hill and New Broken Hill Consolidated Concentrators. It was found that, under normal plant operation, flotation rate constants increased at the lower pulp densities existing in the later cells of cleaner banks. The addition of dilution water to the feed to the bank increased flotation rate constants, thereby confirming the relationship. It is shown that the relationship between flotation rate constant and pulp density is size dependent, being most pronounced for larger sized particles. In contrast, the effect is not markedly dependent upon mineral type. Possible consequences of this relationship for control of cleaner operation are discussed with the aid of some simulated results.

Instantaneous outbursts have occurred at Metropolitan Colliery from the pick and shovel work of early days to the modern mining techniques of today. Developments have been the introduction of an emission index to measure the proneness of the coal to outbursts, drainage and destressing by large diameter holes, attempts at higher productivity by the introduction of pulsed infusion shotfiring and improvements in ventilation. The future plans and aims for the Colliery include prediction of outbursts, seam gas pre- drainage and longwall mining.

Air movement and associated oxygen transport through waste rock dumps has the potential to significantly enhance the rate of oxidation of pyrite-bearing material. While this is a desired outcome for most heap leach operations, airflow in waste rock storage facilities can result in significant increases in generation and acceleration of acid rock drainage. Hence, a good understanding of internal airflow through waste rock dumps is required to control ARD and minimise any associated liability. The principal mechanisms contributing to airflow and oxygen transport in a waste rock pile include: diffusion; advection due to a thermal gradient (chimney effect) and/or wind pressure gradients; and advection due to barometric pumping. While diffusion is typically limited to a near-surface zone of a few meters depth, advection and barometric pumping have the potential to move air (and oxygen) to much greater depths into the pile. In general, the more permeable the waste rock material, and the greater the height-to-width ratio of the waste rock pile, the greater is the potential for advective air movement. The reactivity of the waste rock material as well as the coarseness (hence air permeability), and the spatial variability of these properties within a pile, have a strong influence on the magnitude of thermally induced advection. In contrast, air movement due to barometric pumping is controlled by the waste rock porosity, changes in ambient air pressure and the heterogeneity of air permeability of the waste rock dump. Results of field monitoring and numerical modelling using TOUGH AMD are presented to illustrate the concepts on air movement in waste rock piles discussed in this paper. During the design and construction phase, airflow can be controlled by judicious placement of reactive waste rock and use of selective placement techniques to control the internal structure of the waste rock facility (eg introduction of horizontal layering, prevention of inclined, high-permeability, channels (æchimneysÆ)). Several closure measures are available to minimise airflow including: placement of a low-permeability cover to reduce air entry; and placement of a non-reactive cover material to isolate reactive material from the zone of active airflow and/or regrading of the waste rock pile to obtain a geometry and internal structure less susceptible to advective airflow.

The planning, design and construction of a service tunnel, under a major arterial road between two hospitals are described. The multiple uses of the tunnel combine to provide a favourable cost-benefit ratio for the tunnel as part of a rationalisation of services between hospitals. The driven tunnel provides economic, program and approval advantages over that of a cut and cover construction. The cross sectional shape of the tunnel was determined during feasibility studies by the degree of weathering of the Silurian mud- stones, the shallow cover and the proposed excavation equipment as well as the functional requirements. The site investigations covering geotechnical, building, noise and level surveys provided input to the design documentation and construction phases. Monitoring of settlement levels and primary support stresses during early construction stages confirmed the adequacy of the proposed tunnelling methods and support to be used adjacent to the major building foundations. The 140 metre long tunnel was success- fully completed in April 1980 at a cost of $650,000.

The world-class iron ore mines at Mt Whaleback, Torn Price and Paraburdoo located in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia must mine the Mt McRae Shale to obtain high grade ore from the Dales Gorge Member of the Brockman Iron Formation. The Mt McRae Shale contains a black pyritic shale lithology that reacts with ammonium nitrate-based explosives. This paper provides an overview of the problems associated with mining this reactive rock type as well as the development of a comprehensive procedure to safely and efficiently blast, excavate and dispose of this material. The strategy used to develop the procedure involved raising the awareness of relevant site personnel to the risks associated in mining the Black Pyritic Mt McRae Shale, obtaining the commitment of these personnel that a detailed procedure was required and that any procedure developed must be followed, otherwise the potential risks such as premature detonation were high. It was also necessary that an on-going training program be implemented so that all relevant new employees would be educated as to the reasons for adhering to the Black Pyritic Shale Procedure.

Based on preliminary computer model simulations and stability analyses, both longi- tudinal and transverse, large dimension, cut- and-fill rooms were designed for the parallel dipping ore layers at Kamoto mine. Full scale testing of the designed rooms showed that the rooms are stable and that the rock behavior is predictable. Ordinary waste rock was selected as the filling material because the fill was found to carry little load.

DuPont is a chemical and energy multi-national of approximately 90,000 employees. Often regarded as the world leader in injury reduction and process safety management, DuPont operate 140 manufacturing sites around the globe. Conoco is a wholly owed subsidiary of DuPont which is involved in oil, gas and coal exploration.   Throughout this paper I will discuss DuPont statistics, developing a safety culture and training process as well as discussing possible short comings in the New Zealand safety focus. I will conclude with my recommended improvements and issues for New Zealand companies to focus on.   It is very difficult to compare DuPont and New Zealand statistics through lack of compatibility in recording methods and my ability to interpret ACC's Injury Statistics. However through considering DuPont's statistics, and comparing them to your own companies or departments, you will agree they are indeed impressive. I hope that by discussing DuPont's safety philosophy, and possible shortfalls within New Zealand Legislation many of you will find ideas and inspiration which will help you to further reduce your own injury rates.

The combustion characteristics of Australian coals which contain high inertinite have been studied in a laboratory drop tube furnace and a Thermogravimetric Analyser. The pyrolysis chars and combustion residues were microscopically characterised using a modified coal petrography technique. Results indicated that the overall burnout of inertinite-rich Australian coals under pulverised fuel combustion conditions could be generally within a range of 97 - 99 per cent burnout. The studies showed that poor coal burnout cannot be generally related to high inertinite content in the Australian coals. The extent of coal burnout varies from coal to coal and vitrinite as well as inertinite may contribute to the unbumt chars in combustion residues. Combustion conditions had greater influence over char formation and coal burnout than the coal properties. However, under similar pf combustion conditions, coal rank and coal maceral composition had a strong influence over the coal combustion behaviours and final coal burnout. Simple correlations using coal properties may be used but with caution to determine coal volatile release and burnout at high temperature and rapid heating conditions.
