Large Off Highway Trucks operated in this country are generally of Diesel Electric Drive, this system tends to employ the familiar Electric Wheel. A number of fleets now employ the Traction Motor System as an alternative. An investigation is made of the operation of two such fleets. A brief description is given defining the components and their basic functions in each system. Available life history is presented and system reliability, maintainability and operator reaction is examined. Coal Mining machinery has undergone enormous changes in design and complexity of controls in the past 10 years. Specialised, high productivity equipment has been manufactured in Australia, in sufficient volume, to satisfy the local mullet needs.Local manufacturers face greater challenges from overseas competition, as well as increased customer demands to improve machine performance, productivity, quality, reliability and safety. In order to meet these demands now and in the future, it will be necessary to review work practises, and restructure production and quality systems to incorporate the latest principles and philosophies.

Brown and Chitombo (2007) indicated that during the last two decades, the international mining industry has been using mainly mass mining methods to extract safely and economically some of the important commodities such as copper, diamonds, gold, iron and nickel. Mass mining may be implemented either on the surface through large open pits or underground using mining methods such as sublevel, block and panel caving. Developments in the last ten years have demonstrated that caving methods can be applied successfully in strong orebodies at greater depths and in increasingly challenging geotechnical environments for which more traditional mining methods would be unsuitable, unsafe and/or uneconomic. These underground mass mining challenges require æfront endÆ investigation and analysis, robust engineering design and disciplined implementation and operation. Newcrest Mining Limited has focused its efforts on the development of gold/copper projects of substantial scale and margin. To help achieve this, the company is applying and further developing mass mining methods. These include large-scale open pits (OP) and underground mining methods such as sublevel (SLC), block (BC) and panel caving (PC). Block and panel caving now offer economies of scale opportunities for Newcrest to achieve high production rates at lower production costs; thus enabling the exploitation of mineral endowments at higher margins. This paper discusses the practical aspects of caving technologies that Newcrest continues to develop through its expertise at Telfer and Ridgeway SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps BC and Cadia East PC projects.

In 1979, a test operation of an experimental blast furnace was carried out to investigate the behavior of a sort of formed coke, which was used safely by 30% of total coke charge in No.2 B.F., Sakai works, NSC, in 1975". The Mashec-type formed coke of 60 x 60 x 40 mm in dimension was crushed and screened so that it had the same size range (1011,20 mm) as ordinary coke used in the base operation. Preceding to the operation, some experiments on the properties of the formed coke and the effects of crushing on them were performed.

This study begins with the semivario- gram modelling of variables rutile grade and clay content from a beach sand rutile deposit. This is followed by two dimensional block kriging. The deposit was divided into blocks of 30 x 30 x 1.5 m dimensions and the kriged estimate together with the associated kriging variances for each variable within each block were determined. Finally, using the results of the krig- ing program and considering the acceptable limit of clay content together with the cutoff grade for rutile, a method for optimization of mineable thickness and hence the tonnage of ore was applied and the results were dis- Cussed.

Characterisation of platinum-group element (PGE) deposits and their process products has many challenges for the process or applied mineralogist. It is now well established that the PGE distribution for such samples is variably divided between submicroscopic concentrations of PGE in sulfides, tellurides and related minerals occurring as discrete platinum-group minerals (PGM), of which there are a large number of species, many with partial replacement between the PGE and between anions. Each PGE deposit type requires a targeted approach but fundamentally, there are two general methodologies in vogue. One way is to make a large number of polished or polished thin sections for detailed scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/optical examination to determine the PGM distribution and their associations and grain sizes. The other is to make concentrates of representative crushed or processed samples, thus having fewer subsamples to examine. Our method of choice is to use hydroseparation (HS) for concentration. HS provides representative concentrates of sizes down to ~10 ¦m, not possible by other techniques. Various microbeam methods have been used for analysis of trace quantities of PGE (EPMA, micro-PIXE, SIMS and LAM-ICPMS). We prefer LAM-ICPMS (laser ablation microprobe û inductively coupled mass spectrometry) because of the relatively large analytical volume sampled, the ability to measure all the PGE, monitor up to 20 elements, together with detection levels in the tens to a few hundreds of ppb. We provide typical results derived in studies of stratiform PGE ores and tailings, and a massive Ni-Cu sulfide ore.

Highly weathered ground, limited collar options and the need to achieve a desired outcome at the lowest possible cost led to the need to adopt a construction approach that had no established design methodology. The newest ventilation shaft at Mandalay Resources’ Costerfield Operations had to be established to a depth of 30 m through poor ground best described as ‘sticky swelling clay’, some of which was contained within an old backfilled pit.The ability to excavate a traditional presink was not possible due to limited space and the introduction of men into the shaft was to be avoided due to the associated safety risks and corresponding increase in cost. Piling in conjunction with raise boring and remote fibrecrete application was identified as a possible solution that could achieve the desired outcome at an acceptable level of risk.Construction of the piles was challenging and required continual refinement until an acceptable level of productivity could be achieved. Limitations on concrete delivery was taken into consideration to ensure hole stand-up time was acceptable and re-drills were not required. The adoption of a set process from alignment, drilling, concrete placement and testing ensured the desired design was achieved. Mine operators should consider the use of piling as a method of shaft stabilisation for the portion of raise bored shaft that passes through the weathered zone.The importance of quality control and attention to detail through the entire shaft construction process cannot be underestimated as issues such as insufficient geotechnical investigation, pile and pilot hole deviation, concrete and fibrecrete quality, as well as delays in the application of fibrecrete can place the success of the project at risk.This paper outlines key learnings from a client’s perspective with regards to the concept, planning, design, execution and completion of a 3.1 m diameter raise bore shaft through both weathered and highly structured ground at the Augusta Mine.CITATION:Green, S and Austerberry, R, 2014. The object of most blasting operations is to destroy the insitu structure of the rock mass so that mechanical equipment can efficiently excavate the rock fragments. In achieving this objective the blasting engineer is also concerned with minimising damage to the adjacent rock which forms the mine structure relied upon to provide support. Damage to this "structural" rock is undesirable but usually occurs as a result of two distinct processes: ò readjustment of stresses around the excavation as a result of the mining process itself ò impact of vibration and high pressure gases from blasting operations. Gross damage to mine structures from either cause is observed as visible alteration to the appearance of the rock structure in the form of cracking, slabbing, back or over break and visible displacement. Recent work at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) has shown that significant reduction in the strength of a rock mass can take place well before the onset of these obvious signs of damage. It has been demonstrated that the effect of blast damage on the behaviour of the rock mass can be many times more prominent than the effect of stress redistribution. This offers the blast design engineer the opportunity to significantly reduce blast induced damage to rock structure by modifying blasting practices. This paper introduces the current JKMRC postgraduate research projects investigating the evaluation and control of blast damage.

The extraction of the values from gold bearing clay or clayey ores has always presented difficulties. A description of the successful operation of a mill working on material of this nature is here given in the hope that it will be of interest to mining engineers and metallurgists, particularly as the ore body referred to has been worked out. The methods finally adopted were evolved at the mill after the failure of 3: plant specially designed in England and sent out to New Guinea to cope with the clay by the old principle of calcining to brick followed by crushing and cyanidation. A description is given of the direct cyanidation of run of mine ore in '90 ton vats; which was finally adopted after a great deal of study and experiment. Mention is also made of the method of removing overburden in the open cut and the mining and transport of the ore from the open cut to the mill. The purpose of the paper is to record these matters while the information is still available. . .DESCRIPTION OF THE ORE BODYThe values occurred in a flat-lying lode which had slipped about half a mile down the mountain side and had come to rest in the nearly horizontal position in which it was found and worked. The thickness of the deposit varied from a maximum of about 25 ft. at the northern end to about 10 ft. at the southern end. The ore body was capped with an overburden of decomposed breccia and porphyry of variable thickness the maximum being about 65 ft. The underlying rock, or the footwaIJ of .the flat ore body was breccia locallyknown as blue breccia.

A better understanding of the hydrogeology within mine waste rock and cover systems is essential for the quantification, prediction and prevention of metals loading to the environment surrounding waste rock piles. The effect of surface condition on the internal flow mechanisms within an intermediate-scale constructed waste rock pile is being investigated at the Cluff Lake Mine, Saskatchewan. Changes in the water balance, the outflow distribution and water residence time have been observed in the waste rock pile following successive modifications of the surface condition. The three year old, run of mine, free-dumped surface was ripped to a depth of 30 cm to 40 cm, and levelled in October of 2001. In August 2002, a 10 cm to 15 cm cover of compacted waste rock was placed on the pile. Outflow, precipitation and run-off data collected during natural and artificial rainfall events have been used to quantify the maximum infiltration rate, and the spatial pattern of discharge and cumulative volume of water that infiltrated into the waste rock under each surface condition. Infiltration data together with the outflow data provide a basis to address the residence time of water within waste rock and the dominant flow mechanisms for different surface conditions. With a free dump surface spatially distinct wetting fronts are observed at the base of the pile that vary in flow rate by an order of magnitude (measured at a 2 m by 2 m scale) and in time by up to a week. Following ripping and levelling, similar cumulative outflows were observed, but the magnitude and arrival time of wetting fronts changed across the pile. A decrease in outflow volume, a decrease in infiltration volume, a two-fold increase in the response time of wetting fronts and a more spatially uniform distribution was observed following placement of the compacted surface layer. Based on preliminary data, the internal structure appears to be the dominant factor controlling outflow variability.

The current financial climate has given rise to fears that falling mineral prices and tight credit will force mining companies to cut back on production and new project development in a bid to cut costs and conserve cash. However, a prolonged squeeze on global supply can have only one result: a massive and potentially explosive demand for metals in the not-too-distant future. A resurgent global economy will also generate dramatic new demand for oil and energy, with a return to higher oil prices likely. How then should the mining industry plan for the future? In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) could lead the way as a partial or complete substitute for trucks. In 13 of 15 studies undertaken by Sandvik and Snowden, comparing IPCC with truck-optimised pit designs, IPCC generated operating savings ranging from US$0.18 to US$0.82 per tonne moved, compared to trucks. Trucks have higher operating, maintenance and energy costs than conveyors. New emission standards on diesel engines may make them more emission friendly but less efficient in terms of energy usage. With far more efficient energy use and cheaper operating costs per tonne moved than trucks, conveying offers an attractive alternative for the bad times ahead and into the apparent energy depleted future. When evaluating alternatives, a reasonable first step would be to conduct a scoping level study which analyses the differences in capital and operating costs between a truck and shovel operation and an IPCC solution. The study can also determine what type of IPCC is best suited to the particular mining application. The results can then be used to decide whether a more detailed study is justifiable. IPCC is a proven process that, with a fresh mindset, can make a significant improvement to mining operations. Sandvik (as an OEM with a full suite of IPCC equipment) can undertake these studies in ten working days in conjunction with Snowden or any other independent mine planner who knows how to schedule for IPCC. Because most mining industry personnel have been æborn and bredÆ on trucks and shovels û this paper focuses on some of the practical considerations necessary to make IPCC systems work that the Sandvik Technical Services Group has encountered during these studies.

The history of world nickel production has been affected significantly by the supply and demand situation and fluctuation of LME price of nickel metal. In the beginning of the 1980s, the decline of price and demand lead to the withdrawal of un-competitive producers and the shrinkage of the production capacity. During the same period, Sumitomo Metal Mining maintained the production level with continuous improvement of the traditional matte electrorefining process. However, Sumitomo has recognised that the continuous improvement alone does not promise us the ability to catch up with rapid changes in the world. In the meantime, Sumitomo intensively researched chloride hydrometallurgy and has developed the chloride process for the nickel refining. This includes the solvent extraction and chloride electrowinning in the mixed sulphide process and the chlorine leach of the anode slime arising from matte electrorefining. In the late-1980s, Sumitomo Metal Mining decided to develop a new nickel refining technology based on chloride hydrometallurgy. The new process was designed from the comprehensive aspects involving safety and the environment. Construction of the plant for the matte chlorine leach electrowinning (MCLE) process was commenced in 1991. The MCLE plant with a capacity to 2000 tonnes per month has been commissioned at Niihama since 1992. The process has provided high productivity, overall good economics and high quality of electrolytic nickel produced. After the establishment of the process, Sumitomo has maintained continuous improvement of the new process and has attained the best practice of the work classification.

This paper describes an integrated approach to the evaluation of ore loss and ore dilution via geostatistical simulation of in situ geology and grade characteristics, simulation of blasting mechanisms and simulation of loading from a blast muck pile. The approach is demonstrated on a case study. The sequential Gaussian method is used to simulate in situ bench grades on the scale of the smallest selectable volume within a blast muck pile. The simulated grades of these component volumes are interpreted as the reality that would be available with exhaustive sampling. The simulated bench is subjected to a blast simulator, based on the SCRAMBLE model, which effectively moves each of the component model volumes to its final resting place in the blast muck pile. Ore/waste delineation and selective loading processes are applied to the simulated muck pile to determine the degree of selectivity that can be achieved by various sizes of loader and types of loading and to quantify ore dilution and ore loss. An in situ model representing the reality of knowing only the data and information that are available from specific grade control drilling and sampling grids is obtained by sampling the geostatistically simulated model on a specified grid. The volumes comprising the in situ model are then populated by estimates based only on the data and from the specified grade control drilling and sampling grids. Different drilling and sampling grids are used to generate different models, each reflecting the levels of data and information available. Selectivity is assessed as a function of the drilling and sampling grids as well as the size and type of loader. Performance is assessed against the ideal selectivity that could be achieved on the perfect knowledge model comprising the simulated values of each component volume. Costs, prices and financial criteria enable an optimal selection of the grade control drilling grid, size of loader, type of loading and blast design.

Properties of the soil profile fundamentally control water-limited ecosystems. Soil water availability affects vegetation dynamics of plant communities, but is also affected by these communities in return. Understanding this eco-hydrological interplay and the role of physical soil restoration is crucial for successful rehabilitation and management of post-mining landscapes in semi-arid areas. However, uncertainties exist in both the mathematical description of plant communities within ecological submodels and the predictability of future rainfall events. This study uses information gap decision theory combined with an ecohydrological system model to investigate how both uncertainties impact decision-making in the context of ecosystem rehabilitation. A range of management strategies are investigated to identify the optimal soil thickness for successful rehabilitation of native plant communities in Central Queensland. The results emphasise that thicker soils can counterbalance uncertainty in mathematical description of plant communities by increasing the simulated survival probability of plant communities. However, the influence of thicker soils on the robustness of plant communities against a change in future rainfall amount is rather marginal. By allocating an economic value for restoring a particular thickness of soil layer, these results can be used to evaluate the costs of ecosystem re-establishment with regard to two target measures - the survival probability of the plant community and their robustness against climate change.CITATION:Arnold, S, 2012. "In some underground mines it has been observed that the primary focus during feasibility studies is to determine the best way to mine the defined orebody. Some studies have been conducted without sufficient consideration of the ventilation and cooling requirements or the risk from exposure to associated airborne pollutants caused by the mining operations.Following the hierarchy of control to manage risk, numerous problems of the ventilation systems in some underground mines could have been avoided if sufficient consideration was given to the ventilation requirements to manage heat, airborne pollutants and leakage during the feasibility study phase. If the constraints and hazards were well defined and understood at the time of the study, efforts could have been made to eliminate or substitute the hazards to decrease the risk. Some of these problems include but are not limited to: primary fan locations heat loads diesel exhaust ventilation design based on the production requirement fire/emergency response strategies.This paper highlights areas in the ventilation discipline that are sometimes overlooked during feasibility studies. It will also highlight the importance of the Ventilation Specialist during these studies. Experience and knowledge of best ventilation practices must be applied in feasibility studies.As a result of adequate consideration to all ventilation aspects in the feasibility study phase, risks will become lower in terms of health, safety, production loss and equipment downtime caused by heat.CITATION:Kok, J, 2014. In todayÆs demanding business landscape continual change and technological advancement is a given. With these changes there is now, more than ever, a need to ensure sustainable growth in respect of value protection and value adding whilst meeting the pressures and expectations of the societies in which we operate. Traditionally the management of safety has been a very reactive activity in the business, in some cases seen as an irritation and a disruptive process that demands a focus on preventing reoccurrences. This in turn has focused the measurement of safety performance on a range of lagging indicators û æafter the effect managementÆ. Gaining and maintaining a licence to operate is crucial to a sustainable business but as a prerequisite, organisations need to have a demonstrable ability to manage the safety of their people, as well as mitigating the people risk associated with the business activity. A major focus in the last decade has been on the implementation of enterprise risk management programs, where risk becomes embedded in all business systems and processes and the organisationsÆ genetic make up is programmed to analyse and integrate risk management into all facets of the business activity. The management of safety should be no different. One school of thought argues that there are no new accidents, but rather our inability to learn from the past. Others believe that as long as we have an appetite to achieve the unachievable, we will have to continue to push the boundaries, our safety comfort zones and inevitably take risks. Single reliance on highly evolved technical systems, elaborate processes, highly skilled people, safe equipment and safe work environments have shown one thing û they are not sustainable in providing adequate coverage in the business. In analysing a range of factors associated with some of the worst catastrophes of the 20th century, it can be suggested that they were in fact predictable and inevitable and that an integrated approach underpinned by sound risk management systems could have determined a different result. The key to a sustainable approach in the management of safety requires us to look at a multitude of aspects that collectively allow the performance of an organisation to be predictable. To have certainty in the business activities it is necessary to have controls in place that will mitigate the risks normally associated with unwanted events. It is ensuring that human factors effectively contribute to monitoring the planned approach and being able to safely adjust to any variability. In essence this is having the ability to proactively plan for the longer term. The sentiments articulated by organisational leaders echo that safety management is good business. Surely then a good business is a sustainable business, and a sustainable business is one that provides lasting benefits to its stakeholders.

This paper will examine the prospects for Queensland's non-fuel mineral industries as we approach the 21st century. The opportunity for growth is unprecedented. Exploitation of recent discoveries, proposals and developments in downstream processing are predicted to contribute to a doubling of the State's mineral exports to around $10 billion by the year 2000. In 1995 - 96 the value of Queensland's mineral production was $6 billion, comprising $1892 million metallic minerals, $127 million non-metallic minerals and $4 025 million total fuel minerals. For many years Queensland has been among the world's major producers of copper, silver, lead, zinc, bauxite and mineral sands. Recently Queensland has become an important producer of magnesia. Queensland's ability to compete results from its location close to rapidly developing Asian markets, the diversity of its major minerals and an increasing ability to add value to the resources base using competitively priced energy. Northwest Queensland is one of the richest base metal provinces on earth following the recent discovery of five world-class orebodies. Of these deposits, Osborne (copper-gold) has commenced production and Cannington (silver-lead-zinc) and Ernest Henry (copper-gold) are scheduled to be developed by 1997. Century Zinc Limited and the Queensland Government are negotiating with native title claimants on the development of Century (zinc-lead-silver). Expansion is in progress at the Mount Isa copper mine (renamed the Enterprise) and copper smelter and a high analysis fertiliser project may be developed based on Phosphate Hill. Korea Zinc Company Limited has reached agreement to construct and operate a 350 000 Mtpa zinc smelter/refinery near Townsville. There are future expansion prospects for the vertically integrated major industrial mineral operations based on Weipa bauxite and Kunwarara magnesite. Upgrading of the Boyne Island aluminium smelter will require a doubling of alumina consumption. Downstream processing options for Kunwarara magnesite are being investigated and are expected to lead to increases in production and the manufacture of a range of value-added products. At the Yabulu refinery near Townsville, nickel and cobalt production using imported ore is to be increased and a commercial cobalt plant is to be built. Additional opportunities for further processing and manufacturing are associated with proposed new mines at Ely (bauxite), Skardon River (kaolin) and Goondicum (ilmenite). Recently discovered resources of zeolite and perlite also offer exciting development possibilities. Other manufacturing opportunities such as glass and ceramics based on local and plentiful clay and silica sand could replace imports. Silica sand at Cape Flattery is currently exported and production is expected to double.

The pyroclastic-filled Voorspoed kimberlite pipe has a low grade due to significant internal dilution which translates to a marginal business case. The site, with excavations, tailings dumps and buildings remnant of mining from 1906 to 1912 is to become De BeersÆ benchmark mine in South Africa. In a climate of skills shortages and lean structures, a geological service to optimise exploitation of this complex resource was established. As historical mining removed the higher-grade centre of the pipe, initial production was in the weathered upper benches along brecciated pipe margins. Trenching and blasthole logging before blasts helped to mitigate the effects of the drastic contact deviations that occur when working with an inferred geological model. However, identification of unfamiliar weathered kimberlite and delineation of unmodelled internal waste posed challenges. Efficient grade control by demarcation and allocation of individual truck loads will be vital to continue profitable mining at Voorspoed. Further challenges arose across disciplines. The first yearÆs planned production of mostly weathered kimberlite was processed through a plant designed for VoorspoedÆs unusually competent ore. The high clay content of the weathered material led to clogged chutes and overloaded fines disposal, hampering efforts to commission the plant. Resolving this problem involved mining æout of planÆ to provide a blend of fresh and weathered kimberlite. The calculation of an accurate mine call factor was hindered by a lack of haul truck monitoring, process stoppages and stockpiling in the plant during commissioning. Updating of the geological model to incorporate the contact changes observed in the pit was slowed by the need to first understand how 40 years of exploration data was integrated to create the model. A plan, involving focused mine geology practices, is in place to upgrade a portion of the resource from Inferred to Indicated level of confidence. These challenges are not limited to new mines but will be ongoing as new information is constantly gained at Voorspoed and many mining operations.

A shift in the present day oil exploration scenario from West Coast can be foreseen keeping in mind peak of exploration in Cambay Basin and fast pace of development in Bombay High and its associated fields by the end of this century. Shifts in exploration from structural traps to stratigraphic traps, techno- logical development to drill in deep waters, improving economic situation for oil ventures and proven oil and gas potential of East Coast basins suggest that Indian oil explorat- ion scene will be at its peak along east coast during early 21st century. Hydrocarbon shows in Poonch and Jawalamukhi in Punjab Basin, improvements in drilling to greater depths, better seismic data aquisition, good source rock potential of Subathus and its equivalents and large geologi- cally mapped structures will reopen new avenues for explorationists. Not much exploration effort has been put up so far in Ganga Basin. Keeping in mind size of the basin, sedimentary thickness involved, presence of algal matter deposited in shallow marine environment & higher hydrocarbon indications warrant active exploration. Gondwanas in India having such a large sedimentary area can not be ignored keeping in view generation and production from the non marine sediments of Kenya, Chad, Sudan, Gadon and China. Gondwanas become all the more important in view of gas production from their equivalents-Karoos in Ethiopia and South Africa. Due to the increasing demand for resources worldwide, efficient utilisation of raw material deposits and recycling technologies become more and more important. Growing industrial nations and increased living standards require a large raw material supply. Hereby responsible handling of existent primary and secondary raw materials is indispensable. By utilising state-of-the-art technologies resources are extracted, recovered and recycled more efficiently which increases sustainability. Hereby sensor technologies combined with intelligent data processing systems in particular provide a considerable research area. Innovative sensor technologies are already implemented during recognition of material-specific characteristics, during elemental recognition as well as during machine control. They are applied to attain increased automation levels of mining machineries, higher recoveries during mining and processing as well as higher recoveries. To be able to face the increased demand for sensor technologies and the integration into raw material industries, an interdisciplinary association of three RWTH Aachen University Institutes has been founded. The association has expertise on increasing productivity and capacity utilisations by automating mining and recovering processes by sensor technologies. Due to the utilisation of sensor systems, materials and structures can now be detected and elementary analysed on a real-time scale. The developed and enhanced techniques are the key for any ambition of autonomous plants and machineries. This paper gives an overview on the regarded sensor technologies for material recognition, machine automation and mineral processing. The authors present concepts based on extensive laboratory and field studies of successful implementation and application the technologies considering special mining conditions. Overall three applications are described to demonstrate the potential of sensor technologies for autonomous and sustainable mining: real-time analysis: recognition of elementary compounds during extraction processes; multi-sensor system EiControlPlus: designed for automation of longwall shearers by complete detection of the machineÆs environment; and sensor-based sorting: applied in recycling and mineralÆs industries.
