Coal mining operations in the Upper Olifants River Catchment in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa are challenged with the increasing production of excess mine water that cannot be fully managed by existing practices of pollution control at source, recycling, and reuse on mining sites, storage and limited release to the natural water course. In contrast to this, the Olifants River Catchment is experiencing water stress and insufficient water is available to satisfy all water quantity and quality requirements for future industrial and municipal growth. It is estimated that the catchment has a deficit of 192 million m3 per annum if the reserve water requirements are taken into account. The future increased water requirements can be met by water transferred to the Olifants River Catchment from adjacent catchments. The cost of transferred water is likely to be substantially higher than the current cost of water supplied to local municipalities, commerce and industry. BHP Billiton and Anglo Coal Corporation are working together to jointly implement water management strategies that will contribute to the achievement of in-stream and dam water quality and aquatic objectives for the catchment. Consideration is now being given to the treatment and beneficial use of excess mine water. This will inaugurate a new era for the coal mining industry in South Africa, in which a pollution threat to the water resources in the Upper Olifants River Catchment is converted into a water source for beneficial use. Three potential mine water reclamation and reuse schemes have been identified and this paper details the technical, institutional, legal and financial considerations in the implementation of these schemes.

Among the solutions currently being considered for improving traffic flow in Sydney are the construction of major road tunnels, principally the Eastern Distributor Tunnels, leading from the end of the Cahill Expressway to Drivers Triangle and South of Taylor Square and the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, which incorporates sections of driven tunnel at the northern and southern sides of the harbour. The Eastern Distributor Tunnels, known as Stages 2 and 3 of the Eastern Distributor Scheme comprise: Stage 2 - A south bound two lane tunnel from north of William Street to Driver's Triangle. The southern end includes two Y junctions (locally 3 to 4 lane widths) with exits into South Dowling Street, Anzac Parade and Moore Park Road. Stage 3 - A north bound, two lane tunnel from Taylor Square to Palmer Street just north of William Street. Further details of the Eastern Distributor Tunnels are given in the paper by Baxter, Chappel and Fishburn (1986) which is included in this conference.

Oaky Creek Coal (OCC) has embarked on an ambitious program to fast track the introduction of Trench Mining into its current mining operations. The project has the capacity to allow the extraction of reserves at stripping ratios, uneconomical by conventional mining methods.Trench mining using Continuous Highwall Mining (CHM) technology reduces the in-situ stripping ratio to 4:3; compared with a stripping ratio of 20:1 using conventional mining techniques.

Synthesis of GLORIA side-scan sonar and other geophysical data has provided morpholo- gical and tectonic details of the interaction between the Nazca and South American plates along the Peru Trench (80S-15¦S). Our analyses suggest that a new propagating rift of the Galapagos type is evolving along the Mendana Fracture Zone (MFZ). Subduction induced rift- ing of the Nazca plate is accompanied by organized seafloor spreading for the last 3 Ma at least. GLORIA sonographs and bathymetric mapping show an 8-10¦ divergence in MFZ width towards the Peru Trench. The fracture zone comprises numerous ridges and troughs and a lack of sediment cover in the axial part. Young magnetic lineations (anomalies 1-2A) are observed within the fracture zone wni.cn are orthogonal to the older Nazca plate lineations. The central anomaly narrows west- ward and can be observed up to 400 km seaward of the trench whereas anomaly 2A is terminated about 200 km from the trench axis. Recent SeaMARC II sonar mapping in the region shows large igneous blocks in the Trench axis to the north of MFZ but absent to the south. We believe these blocks represent young seafloor of MFZ rift/spreading center broken off from the ridges as they subduct along the Peru Trench. The MFZ rift is propagating west- ward at a rate of 115 km/Ma (25 km/Ma relative to the South American plate). Given the present rates of accretion at the East Pacific Rise and of propagation along MFZ rift, the Nazca plate will be divided into two parts in about 35 Ma.

The Northside Storage Tunnel is a TBM driven rock tunnel system designed to collect and store sewage from four major storm overflow points along the existing Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer. At present, sewage overflows during wet weather are the main source of pollution for Sydney Harbour. The tunnel system comprises a 16 km long by 3.8 m to 6.5 m diameter tunnel from Lane Cove to the North Head Sewage Treatment Plant and a 4 km long by 6.3 m diameter branch tunnel from West Chatswood. The tunnel will have a typical rock cover of about 50 m to 150 m. Most of the tunnel alignment is contained within the Hawkesbury Sandstone Formation which is generally an excellent tunnelling stratum, and offers few geotechnical constraints. However, the tunnel is required to pass beneath incised palaeochannels at Middle Harbour and Manly with each palaeochannel containing about 70 m of sediment.Innovative geotechnical and geophysical investigations were undertaken to examine the tunnel route and characterise the rock beneath the palaeochannels. These investigations have located zones of poor quality rock beneath one palaeochannel in particular, suggesting significant stress relief had taken place in the rock at times of lower sealevel producing structural features indicative of valley bulging. This paper presents the geotechnical model developed for the tunnel, and the models and constraints for tunnelling beneath the palaeochannels.

The New MetroRail City Project was completed in 2007 in Perth, Western Australia. The project included construction of two underground stations, twin bored rail tunnels of 1.4 km combined length and cut-and- cover tunnels and dive structures of about 1 km total length. It is the first major underground construction project within the Perth central business district (CBD). This paper provides an introduction to the project and describes the geology and hydrogeology of the area. Ground conditions varied significantly along the alignment from soft estuarine muds in an area of reclamation to very dense cemented sands and very stiff to hard clays. Deep foundations for the project extend down into the bedrock below the CBD, a Tertiary siltstone/sandstone. Key geotechnical hazards encountered during the project are discussed. The building protection methodology on the project is described, including damage assessment, condition surveys, monitoring and protection of key structures.

This paper describes the design of an expert system used as a part of a diagnostic system for diesel hydraulic drives. A PC-based diagnostic system ruDi (KeBler and Burgwinkel, 1993) was developed to minimise the time for diagnosis and repair work of vehicles with diesel hydraulic drives used in the mining industry. One part of ruDi is an expert system that helps to locate errors in any of a vehicle's subsystems, and supports technicians in removing the cause of a malfunction. Apart from the standard knowledge of diesel engines and hydraulic transmissions, the expert system supports the interpretation of the data obtained during sophisticated engine analysis tests such as high-resolution speed analysis or high-pressure analysis of the diesel injection system. The expert system is designed to diagnose various vehicles of the same type. Data for each vehicle is stored separately allowing checks to be carried out individually for each machine. An additional feature of this system is a database interface to a Maintenance Planning and Control System (MPCS) that allows an automatic generation of work orders for the defects found during the expert system sessions.

To counter depressed world nickel prices, a continuing effort is being made at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter to reduce unit production costs. One major area in which production costs can be reduced is the substitution of coal for fuel oil. Two areas where this has been achieved to bring about a saving are, the addition of coal to flash furnace flux to reduce supplementary fuel oil requirements in flash smelting and the replacement of two oil-fired air preheaters with a coal-fired unit. These actions have resulted in coal replacing 67% of the current fuel oil requirement in flash smelting at the Kalgoorlie .Lckel Smelter.

The high pressure grinding rolls is one of the few new comminution devices that offer substantial savings when compared with traditional crushing and grinding circuits and with SAG milling. The machine has been well accepted in the cement industry, but mining companies have been more cautious in adopting this technology, partly because of wear and availability problems, and partly because of uncertainties in designing circuits which will deliver the power savings without complicating downstream processing. This paper addresses the latter problem by providing a model structure for predicting power draft and throughput from measurements made with small pilot scale high pressure rolls. Three existing models for predicting product size distributions are assessed and suggestions made for future work. The model structure comprises a power equation, incorporating measurements of torque and rolls speed previously used by the authors. Transport through the mill is assumed to be plug flow. Throughput is governed by the equilibrium gap between the rolls, which is determined both by machine settings and the physical properties of the feed material, including its size distribution. Therefore some form of physical testing in a model machine is required to determine throughput parameters. Results from copper and nickel ore experiments covering a wide range of machine conditions are presented and compared with model predictions. Model assumptions are discussed and directions for future work Suggested.

Selective open pit mining for gold has been in progress at Harbour Lights since the onset of mining in March 1985. Selective mining techniques used are similar to those in other recently opened gold mines in Western Australia. However certain practices have been introduced to accommodate the irregular distribution of mineralisation and comparatively high mill tonnage throughput. These include selective mining with large bucket excavators, sequential waste stripping - ore mining normal to the strike of the orebody and sample line preparation and ripping on bench floors. Application of these selective mining practices at Harbour Lights enables the operation to maintain delivery of approximately forty by 50-tonne truck loads of ore to the mill crusher everyday, with limited rehandling of material through ore stockpiles.

The strength and deformation of more than two hundred coal samples have been tested in the condition of triaxial compression. The regression equation showing the relationship between coal strength and pressure in the pores, as well as confining pressure, was obtained. The appropriate calculation for stress-strain curve was carried out. Further, an analysis shows the variation of coal strength and its modulus of elasticity in methane medium.

ISP (Imperial Smelting Process) produces zinc and lead simultaneously from zinc and lead sulphide concentrates and recovers copper and precious metals into a lead bullion. The strength of sinter is important to keep permeability in the shaft of the Imperial Smleting Furnace. The residual sulphur content of the sinter is also important as it causes metal losses into slag. The paper describes an investigation into the sintering operations to improve sulphur elimination and sinter strength. The micro structure of the sinter and the effect of the blast rate, sintering temperature etc have been studied.

Recent field experiments in the United Kingdom (Buchanan, 1979) have shown that the in-seam technique is capable of detecting a 1m fault in a 3m seam, at a range of 280m and with a resolution of ¦40m. Comparable tests in Australian collieries are proceeding. Although the practicality of an implementation of the technique on a routine basis remains to be demonstrated, the potential of the technique for the prediction of outbursts clearly warrants detailed examination. This potential will,depend, inter alia, on the level and scale of variations in elastic (and anelastic) properties of bodies of coal undergoing stresses associated with mining. Available data, mainly from studies of the seismic properties of gas saturated reservoir rocks, confirm the intuitive view that stress increases give rise to increases in seismic wave velocity and decreases in wave attenuation, markedly at low stresses (as pore spaces close with little resistance) but less so as stress increases. Such increases are of the same order as aniso- tropic effects, but should provide impedance contrast sufficient for detection by in-seam seismic methods. At higher stresses, cracks form within the rock mass. Results from research on earthquake prediction provide some clues to the behaviour of sedimentary rocks sub- jected to large stresses. The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the Short Wave Infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a Quartz- Sericite-Pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

This paper describes the design of the steel fibre reinforced precast concrete (SFRC) segmental lining for the intake and discharge tunnels for the Gold Coast desalination plant in Queensland. In addition, the key design requirements and design methods for the lining of these 2 km long, 2.8 m internal diameter tunnels, including structural, durability and maintenance requirements are discussed. Details of the segment configuration and erection process are presented along with information on the manufacture and trial testing of the concrete for the segments. The paper also gives a brief introduction to steel fibre reinforced concrete behaviour. Construction of the tunnels commenced in April 2007, and the authors believe this is the first application of this technology in Australia.

Mine design procedures will be revolu- tionised by technological developments in computers, software, database construction and management, and numerical modelling programs. Developments in geotechnical databases will be required which utilize geological and geomechanical tests to supply appropriate input for numerical models. Techniques utilizing sedimentological and structural modelling are described. When ore is being selected from a regularised block model, a common procedure is to accept as ore any block whose iron content exceeds a cut-off value, and whose content in each contaminant analyte is below an appropriate cut-off value. This method defines a quadrant within the multidimensional analyte space, such that any block lying within the quadrant is accepted as ore and any block lying outside the quadrant is rejected as waste. The cut-off levels can be adjusted to maximise ore tonnage at a target grade (or analyte vector). When the method is applied to a project comprising multiple pits with systematically differing grades, it is found that ore tonnage at target grade is maximised if different cut-off quadrants are used for the different pits. This is apparently illogical, because it implies that an ore block from one pit may be accepted as ore, but an identical block from another pit is rejected as waste, even when ore from both pits is to be blended into the same product and there are no production cost differences between the pits. The paradox is an example of the ætheory of the second bestÆ: if there are multiple conditions for optimality and one condition is broken, then obeying the other conditions may not be the best policy. The problem lies with the quadrant cut-off method, which is shown to be inconsistent even for selecting ore from a single pit. A criterion that is inconsistent cannot be optimal. It is shown that a linear composite cut-off function provides maximum ore tonnage, and that a single composite cut-off criterion is consistent and optimal over multiple pits. Further, it is shown that a composite cut-off function not only maximises ore tonnage at a specified composition, but also can be used to select ore so as to maximise project value, if marginal costs and values are available.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2013. The need for the hydraulic transportation of coal in the New South Wales coal industry, both from the coal face to the surface and from the coal mine to the consumer or the port for export, is explained. Details of research projects currently in progress and involving the hydraulic transportation of New South Wales coals are given together with information on the hydraulic transportation of coal in the United States of America. The potential of hydraulic transportation as a viable alternative to the proposed expansion and upgrading of the New South Wales railway system to meet the projected New South Wales coal production to the year 2000 is described.
