The problems associated with equating calculated and measured properties of explosives with blast results are examined. The results from six full-scale test blasts in a limestone quarry are described. The purpose of the full-scale trial was two-fold, i) assess the role of varying aluminum levels (10% maximum) in a given explosive in terms of blasting performance, and, ii) find correlation between calculated, as well as measured properties of explosives and the resulting blasting performance. Each blast consisted of 36 holes, initiated with short period detonators in a staggered 3-row 2.4 m x 2.7 m (burden x spacing) pattern. Each 75 mm diameter borehole with no subgrade contained on the average 22 kg of 65 mm diameter cartridged explosive. The bench height was 6.3 m, with an average collpr of 1.2 m. The calculated and mgasured properties of explosive included, strength, detonation and explosion pressure, VOD, plate-dent depth, underwater bubble and shock energy, and the total energy efficiency. Each blast was instrumented to measure detonation velocity, initiation sequence, muck pile motion by means of high-speed photography and blasting vibrations. The post-blast measurements included photogrammetric survey of muck pile for size distribution on surface, muck pile profile, as well as the extent of backbreak. The results showed that the overall blasting performance of the explosive in question was nearly commensurate with the level of aluminum in the explosive, and there was excellent correlation between the underwater test properties and the blast results. The study also exemplified the need for more extensive post-blast analysis than is usual practice, for quantitative assessment of blasting performance of explosives and providing the necessary data-base for calibration of blasting models.

Measurements of the rate of PbO reduction from high lead metallurgical slags were made under laboratory conditions using graphite, a CO-50%CO2 gas mixture and metallic iron as reductants. The results show a transition in rate-controlling step at low PbO contents (i.e. 6 wt.% PbO). At medium to high PbO contents in the slag, the reduction rate was found to be strongly affected by the slag chemistry, temperature and reductant type. The effect of stirring and hence mass transfer in the slag phase on the reduction rate of PbO was found to be insignificant at medium-high PbO contents. Attention is drawn to the importance of chemically controlled reaction rates at the slag-gas interface. Parallels between these results and test work on a 5 tph scale have been briefly drawn.

Poor ground conditions associated with historical workings have presented significant challenges to the drilling of production downholes at the Sons of Gwalia Mine. The combination of foam and polymer drilling, the use of Aquacrete to drill through voids and the practice of lining completed holes has allowed downholes to be effectively drilled and blasted in delaminated ground.

Human exploration of Mars has been on the horizon of scientific goals for decades now, and as part of the objectives of human missions to various planets, one of the possible goals is opening new economic frontiers by the potential extraction and utilisation of resources, eg mining minerals and using surface regolith (Neukart, 2024). A comprehensive understanding of surface morphology, lithostratigraphy, basic structural geology, and civil engineering technology is essential to conduct mining operations for resource extraction on extraterrestrial planets. For instance, proper assessment of the risks associated with excavation and infrastructure construction under unique environments such as low gravity, surface irregularities, and the presence of regolith is fundamental. Such knowledge has been accumulated through satellite imagery and numerical topographic data using remote sensing technology, as well as seismic surveys by the on-site lander (Knapmeyer- Edrun et al, 2021; Banerdt et al, 2020; Giardini et al, 2020). Recent studies show that Marsquakes could be caused by the release of strain energy generated by the contraction of Mars. In particular, Marsquakes occur around the graben where many faults exist and form regularly spaced patterns. This implies that Marsquakes occur when the stress field of the Martian crust is an extension condition, and normal faults appear on the surface. In this study, we focus on so-called graben structures, one of Mars’s common tectonic structures (Plescia, 1991; Banerdt et al, 1992; Hoogenboom Hagen, 2014). The study aims to provide additional information about the tectonic environment during the formation of such features and, in addition, the internal mechanical-rheological structure of Mars, revealed by the geometrical pattern of faults modelled and simulated in a laboratory environment.

This paper reviews the various processes successfully in operation to treat refractory gold ores and describes in detail the alkaline pressure oxidation circuit operating at the Barrick Mercur Mine, Utah, U.S.A., on car- bonaceous/sulphide refractory ore and the acidic pressure oxidation circuit operating at the Barrick Goldstrike Mine, near Carlin, Nevada, U.S.A., on sulphide refractory ore. The autoclave process is important to Barrick for the extraction of gold. The Company has operated successfully a 750 ton per day unit at its Mercur property for the past two years and more recently has commissioned a 1500 ton per day unit at Goldstrike. The paper presents data relative to operating costs, materials of construc- tion for autoclaves and peripheral equipment, reagent requirements, and changes required during commissioning for both autoclave systems.

Reserves of high-grade quartz gravel, lignite and timber suitable for the production of silicon metal and ferrosilicon on large scale occur within 40 miles of Bluff Harbour. Undeveloped hydroelectric power resources on the Clutha River are located within 50 miles of the most promising quartz gravel deposits while opencastable lignite, potentially suitable for electric power production, occurs in the same locality as the quartz gravels. A preliminary study of production economics indicates that the commercial feasibility of silicon/ferro-silicon production would depend mainly on the cost of electric power, total capital cost of plant, and the market value of the products. The proximity of Bluff Harbour is advantageous for the export of products.

Photoelastic and equivalent material model ling techniques for studying stresses and defor- mations and modes of failure in geological and engineering structures are described. The appli- cation of these techniques to the solution of tunnelling design problems is outlined. Models may contain heterogeneous components to simulate geological and man-made structures and may be two- or three-dimensional. Prototype construc- tion procedures and time dependent behaviour may be modelled. Examples of recent model studies carried out for the design of underground railway tunnels are given. Development of photoelastic and equi- valent material modelling techniques and facili- ties at the CSIRO, Division of Applied Geomech- anics are described, including a biaxial and triaxial frame for testing large scale two and three dimensional equivalent material models and components of full scale prototype structures.

With the economic trend towards reduced capital spend, more stakeholders are focusing on improved operational efficiency and productivity. Advancements in achieving the optimum dollar-per-tonnage will be more dependent on creating a logistics system that is well balanced and economically optimised. Critical to predicting a successful business case is the ability to accurately define capacity, realistically increase throughput and proactively translate objectives into design and operating requirements. Failure to do this will create an unrealistic perception of capacity and performance for the export corridor. This transition requires a fundamental understanding of the drivers that impact capacity, cost and value across the entire logistics chain. Through examples, this paper will identify the contextual requirements for simulation models that assist decision-makers and stakeholders to more clearly understand the implications of decisions that will define capacity and operational performance. Oaky Creek Coal Pty Ltd. currently mines high quality coking coal from both underground and open cut operations at its Oaky Creek Mine. Coal is transported by rail to the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal south of Mackay and to the Gladstone Coal Terminal. Oaky No.1 Underground Mine, Open Cut and Highwall Mine have concentrated on seams from the German Creek Formation, one of the major productive coal measure formations in the Bowen Basin Coalfields. In 1972 the Marra Mamba Iron Formation in the Lower Proterozoic Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia was recognised as a stratigraphic horizon with significant potential for high grade iron ore reserves. Within the Newman area the Marra Mamba Iron Formation has been subdivided into four strati- graphic units: Lower BIF member, Middle BIF and shale member, Upper BIF member and Upper shale member - and a standard natural gamma log reference section compiled for the entire formation. The recognition of the Upper shale member as an additional unit contrasts to the previously proposed stratigraphy. Enrichment of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation to ore grade (0)8 percent calcined Fe) in the Newman area is restricted to the Upper BIF member and to a lesser extent to the Middle BIF and shale member. Typical ore from Orebody 29 is friable interbedded martite-ochreous goethite, signifi aptly different both physically and chemically from the Brockman Iron Formation ores of the Tom Price-Whaleback type. Large scale customer acceptance trials (in excess of 4 million tonnes) have shown that Marra Mamba ore crushed to fines and blended with Mt. Whaleback fines in a ratio of up to 15:85 forms an acceptable sinter feed.

The application of high pressure water jet technology to the drilling of longholes in coal has resulted in the development of a system currently capable of drilling to lengths greater than 200m. Field tests at the German Creek Mine have demonstrated directional control of the holes within a 0.5m section of the seam. Initial application of the technique at the German Creek operations is for drilling methane drainage holes. Construction and mining sites are often subject to unexpected flooding and extensive delays may occur in locating and installing emergency pumps. This particularly applies to sites located in remote areas. A simple and effective pump, called an air-lift pump, can be built from the equipment available at the working site. The basic req- uirements are a compressed air supply, air hose and conventional water pipes. The air-lift pump is comparatively in- efficient but approximately 35 per cent of the available compressed air power at the site can be applied to pumping. Suprisingly high liquid discharge rates may be obtained in suitable applications. The theoretical and practical consider- ations of the air-lift pump are evaluated and a suggested procedure for the emergency design and construction is outlined. INTRODUCTION. At any given time, the tidal force subjects massive regions to a spatially uniform load. The deformation of any large structure due to these forces is proportional to the elastic properties of the structure. In this aspect, the tidal force applies a load in a manner similar to that of a large-scale testing machine. Any anomalies in the measured tidal response must reflect alterations in the average elastic response of the massive structure. In the present work, tidal tilt measurements obtained in the wall of a large dam are used to infer changes in the response of the dam to applied loads. In particular, it is found that the dam response has changed by approximately 13 percent, on average, for two monitoring periods separated by 5 years. It is possible that these changes were produced by the different volumes of water in the dam for the monitoring periods. The tidal measurement technique can also be applied to monitor changes In the average structural response of large underground and surface masses relevant to coal and metal mines.

Several styles of copper (Cu) mineralisation are present at Sepon. Large tonnage, low grade skarn and carbonate replacement massive sulfide mineralisation occur within the metamorphic aureole of Permian-aged rhyodacite porphyry intrusions (RDPs). During exhumation and supergene weathering, this primary mineralisation has been upgraded to form high-grade chalcocite enriched zones up to 50 m thick, which comprises the bulk of Cu resources currently being mined at Sepon. Groundwaters remobilise Cu to form exotic accumulations of malachite that are locally hosted in irregular karsts in carbonate rocks, found up to 1000 m from source mineralisation. Khanong is the largest Cu deposit and recent discoveries have been made at Thengkham South, Thengkham North and Phabing. All deposits have formed by similar processes of mineralisation. However, all differ due to local variations in host rock lithology, structural setting, and hydrological conditions. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Like almost any other 19th century mining area, the West Coast saw its 20th century scrapping era when machinery which had been installed in seemingly inaccessible places was somehow dragged out again. Fortunately there were some spots so remote that they defied even the most zealous of these pioneering recyclers. One of these was Big River, a mining locality in a rugged landscape straddling the headwaters of the Grey and Inangahua rivers. As a result there remains an internationally important collection of mining equipment including a poppet head, two steam winding engines, a pair of boilers, part of an aerial cableway with its loading system, and remnants of a stamp battery along with its associated gold smelter, cyanide tanks and zinc boxes. There are also assorted building remains associated with 60 years of mining and settlement. Since their abandonment in 1942, these relics have all somehow survived a further half century in a far from favourable climate with two or three metres of rain a year, frequent snowfalls and hot summer temperatures. The rate of decay during the past few years has been alarming.

Difficult ground conditions have plagued the underground operations at Mount Windarra since mining started in 1974.The ore at Mount Windarra consists of seven vertically dipping, sub vertically plunging ore shoots. The ore zone in which the shoots lie is characterised by moderate to heavy cleavage and the presence of serpentanite. The ore is known to extend to 1100 metres below surface.Long hole open stoping under cover of backfill has been used as the primary mining method at the mine, but its poor performance brought the mine near to closure in 1984. The mine had been closed from 1979 to 1980.

Friction rock stabilisers (FRS) are the most common steel-based ground reinforcement used in underground mines in Western Australia. As with any other steel-based product used in underground mines they are susceptible to corrosion, particularly under aggressive minewater and mineral conditions. Because of their thin-wall tubular construction and large surface area, the potential damage resulting from corrosion is considered to be more severe for this type of reinforcement than for other forms of reinforcement made of solid steel bars. Because of the obvious safety problems which may result from corrosion, both mine operators and regulators have raised concerns regarding the long-term effectiveness of FRS installed in underground mines in Western Australia. Although corrosion has been recognised as an important safety issue, the controls of corrosion in varied underground mining environments has not been well understood. To improve the understanding of the corrosion behaviour of FRS, the Department of Minerals and Energy has initiated a research project focused on the mechanisms and extent of corrosion attacks, and their influence on the effectiveness of the reinforcement. This paper describes the research project and presents the interim results achieved To-date.

Traditional exploration has been undertaken by both local and overseas experts to discover tin deposits in Indonesia over almost 300 years. Indonesia is part of a tin belt which runs from Myanmar in the north through Malaysia to Singkep, Bangka, and Belitung islands in Indonesia in the south. The discovery of alluvial tin deposits is becoming harder as the more obvious geological targets are exhausted and topographical conditions become more difficult. New approaches are required to sustain successful exploration. There are indications that tin deposits can be found at depth on-shore as well as off-shore. These deposits are found associated with tough clays. On-shore tin exploration is hampered by swampy areas, while the off-shore search is often affected by difficult sea conditions. These factors lead to increases in the cost of exploration as well as the cost of subsequent production. Tin price fluctuations and environmental issues are also of major concern in the planning of the future operation of tin mining in Indonesia.

Widespread interest in reopening Victorian gold mines, regenerated by increased gold prices, has highlighted the technical problems prevailing. A combination of historical lease legislation, minimal recent mining activity, forms of mineralisation, high insurance rates and tortuous approval requirements for mining mean the potential investor assessing an old mine must address a wide range of technical problems. The requirements for establishment of ore reserves and attraction of capital for mine development are fundamental. Underground reef mining was historically generally on a small scale, and as mining on many fields ceased about the turn of the century, past geological and production records cannot be correlated to personal experience and comment. The impact of modern mining technology on future reef mining will be to reduce operating costs and significantly improve historic metallurgical recovery. Roth these are commensurate with increased capital costs. Workers compensation rates currently applicable in Victoria are many times higher than in other states, adding significantly to operating costs. Establishment of a pilot plant testing facility in central Victoria would provide an invaluable service in treating bulk samples essential for grade and recovery assessments of Victorian ores.

Brown coal and its char were investigated as substitutes for petroleum coke in the manufacture of anodes for Hall-Heroult cells. The char, which had been densified by several techniques, was made into compacts with various binders and the anodic consumption determined during electrolysis. The results were an improvement on previous work, but the anodes still fell short of acceptability for use in aluminium smelters because of intractable microporosity. Some options for future development have been discounted.
