‘Grade Engineering<sub>®</sub> is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans as part of a system-view’ (Walters, 2017). Two of these technologies are directly recoverable through screening stages: Natural Deportment and Induced Deportment. The potential for taking advantage of “Natural Deportment” by size following blasting and crushing has been demonstrated for a range of ore types. Simple and low cost screening can in some cases generate a fine product with improved grade and a lower grade oversize which can be directed to leach or to waste. Where an ore body consists of many different ore types, the traditional approach of blending to metal grade will often add to complexity of treatment, which will reduce the effect of “natural deportment” by size.CITATION: Jokovic, V, Walters, P, Adair, B and Morrison, R, 2018. Recent mapping (1989-1992) by the Northern Territory Geological Survey in the Tennant Creek 1:250 000 map sheet area has resulted in substantial revision of the lithostratigraphy of the Tennant Creek Block (Donnellan, Hussey, and Morrison, in press). Briefly, the former Warramunga Group (Dunnet and Harding, 1967; Dodson and Gardener, 1978) is divided into the Warramunga Formation, and an overlying less deformed volcano-sedimentary succession, the Flynn Subgroup. The latter is conformably overlain by the Tomkinson Creek Subgroup of the Tomkinson Creek province in the north of the Tennant Creek Inlier. These two Subgroups constitute the Churchills Head Group which is essentially equivalent to the Hatches Creek Group of the Davenport province to the south of the Inlier.

BHP BillitonÆs new rotary iron ore car dumper installation at Finucane Island (Port Hedland) was constructed to increase the total capacity of the port facility from 110 Mtpa to 120 Mtpa and to allow for incremental capacity increases in future. The arrangement of the dumper is similar to other car dumper installations existing on site. To construct the facility, approximately 120 000 m3 of material was excavated in six months, to a total depth of 22 m. The saline water table was nominally 6 m below ground level and the materials excavated varied depending on depth, ranging from sand to mangrove muds. There was a need to retain the sides of the excavation and limit the amount of water from entering the excavated area. This was required to allow excavation to progress and had to be maintained during construction of the permanent concrete and steel facility. The excavation was backfilled progressively as construction progressed. Various retaining wall methods were investigated with the preferred option being sheet piles secured by walers and ground anchors. Detailed electronic models were developed and assessed to complete the final design arrangement. Dewatering bores around the perimeter of the excavation removed the groundwater to intercepted sumps within the site. A strict and methodical program was developed to monitor the integrity of the temporary works and the quality of the groundwater. The works were completed on time despite the following challenges being encountered: availability of resources and equipment, movement of mobile plant on æboggyÆ materials, difficulty driving sheet piles into material at depth, drilling of ground anchors to 32 m, grouting of ground anchors, greater than expected groundwater flows, and the risk of hydrocarbons within the groundwater. The lessons learned from the use of the retention system and, in particular, the associated construction challenges overcome, provide a sound basis for similar work in this buoyant resource market. The conference paper describes the temporary works options investigated, design considerations and processes, construction methodology and challenges encountered, and the monitoring systems developed. Lessons learned are also discussed.

Haymont (2012) notes that in parts of Australia significant areas of mining disturbance cannot be relinquished. In Queensland it has been estimated that by 2010, just 0.3 per cent 507 ha of mining disturbance had been rehabilitated to the regulator’s satisfaction (Short, 2015).One reason for this poor record is the presence of inappropriate, unachievable or unmeasurable rehabilitation targets (Glenn et al, 2014; Butler, Anderson and Sexton, 2015). In the authors’ experience in Queensland many mature operations have licence conditions that hinder the achievement of sustainable outcomes or prevent successful validation of rehabilitation success. This creates a lack of certainty for industry and a lack of confidence in the community that the sector can deliver good rehabilitation outcomes (Short, 2015).This extended abstract presents a framework approach that has been applied at two contrasting operations. Without the changes presented, the goal of progressive rehabilitation certification, reduction in financial assurance (FA) and a path to surrender at these sites would have been impossible. A better understanding of the detonation performance of an explosive charge can be gained by directly measuring pressure, temperature and velocity of detonation (VOD). This is particularly important with explosives used in the mining industry because their performance is directly influenced by the degree of confinement given by the borehole diameter and the surrounding rock mass. A project funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) was initiated in early 2009 with the view to design and build cost-effective prototype instrumentation to measure the relative differences in detonation pressures and temperatures of commercial mining explosives. The project’s primary focus was on low-density explosives. Low-density (also referred to as low shock) explosives have been available in various forms for nearly 20 years. There have been significant advances in the availability, reliability and flexibility of these explosives, which now offer a range of densities and degrees of water resistance. Their detonation performance is not well understood and cannot be accurately predicted with current ideal and non-ideal detonation codes. It was therefore viewed as important to be able to directly measure pressure and temperature during the detonation process of these complex mixtures in production blastholes. Identifying the pressure release patterns of both conventional and low-density explosives under different geotechnical conditions should provide the necessary information to both validate detonation codes and better define input parameters for breakage and fragmentation models. This paper gives a general description of the prototype instrumentation developed and reports on the results obtained to date in full-scale conditions.

Hard rock TBMs are very often open machine layouts, with just a part roof shield over the front of the machine. The whole system is designed for fast face advance and the economy of the project often depends entirely on the rate of advance. Typically, hard rock conditions will demonstrate stable and good ground for a major part of the tunnel. However, short sections of crushed shear zones with clay and gouge material may cause serious time delays. Spiling rock bolting has been proven to be very efficient under such circumstances, provided the fully grouted rebar bolts can be placed in a controlled and practical manner.Environmental restrictions are becoming more and more a part of tunnel excavation projects. Even hard rock TBM tunnelling may require a strict ground water control, because of consequences on the ground surface from lowering the ground water level. Such consequences may be surface settlement, negative influence on ground water resources or damage to vegetation.Pressure injection ahead of the advancing tunnel face (in this paper named pre-injection), using microfine cement and chemical grouts, is today a proven technology. As examples can be mentioned (Garshol, 1997) about 100 km of pre-injected tunnels below Oslo City and about the same length of subsea tunnelling elsewhere in Norway. Examples from other parts of the world are also available, like below Stockholm, Sweden, the Inland Feeder project and Hollywood Metro both in Southern California.To take advantage of spiling rockbolts and pre-injection, it is an obvious prerequisite to be able to drill the necessary boreholes in the right positions and at the correct angle. In drill and blast excavation this is simple, but in TBM projects it has repeatedly turned out to be difficult. More than once owners have accepted bids containing reassurance from the contractor that the drilling method will be sorted out later. Experience shows that if ælaterÆ means after start of the TBM operation, it is often too late.

The Project Specification and Technical Requirements documents associated with several recent large road tunnel projects within Australia have specified the application of AS/IEC 61508 – FunctionalSafety of Electrical/Electronic/Programmable Electronic Safety Related Systems at very high performance levels for the various control and fire life safety systems associated with such facilities.This paper seeks to explore the implications of referencing this standard within the road tunnel services context in terms of practicality, complexity and cost, whilst providing some examples of how a high safety integrity level (SIL) level can theoretically be achieved given current hardware availability.

Social licence to operate is developed and kept through managing both operational impacts and the relationship between local community and company. However, CSIRO research has demonstrated that in determining how accepting community members are of a mining operation, relational factors, such as procedural fairness and trust, are much more important than operational impacts, such as impacts on employment and the environment (Moffat and Zhang, 2015). Companies seek to develop relational factors through their engagement with local community; such engagement has many aspects, including, initially identifying stakeholders and positioning the company as part of the local community (Lacey et al, in prep; Thomson and Boutlier, 2011). These relational factors involve the social identities of people living in the community. Social identities are a part of people that shape their beliefs, based on their connections with various groups in their lives (Hogg et al, 2004).An engagement process, intentionally or not, inevitably interacts with the social identities of stakeholders (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). For example, traditionally, at the very beginning of engagement processes, community members are assigned to categories using conventional stakeholder mapping and categorisation methods, often based on assumptions about stakeholders’ interests, which equates to assumptions about stakeholders’ social identities (Colvin, Witt and Lacey, 2016; International Council on Mining and Metals, 2012). Yet, there has been limited empirical inquiry into whether such categories reflect the social identities of stakeholders and if there is a bearing on relational factors, including, the perceived fairness of consultations and trust in mining companies (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). Also at this time, companies commonly seek to create a presence in communities, for example, joining Chambers of Commerce and participating alongside community members. Again, there has been limited empirical inquiry into whether community members and companies identifying with the same overarching group and thus sharing aspects of social identity, influences relational factors (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). In this study, we examined the effects of changing aspects of social identity by changing how stakeholders were identified and companies were positioned, on how stakeholders’ perceived a new mining operation, specifically how they perceived the procedural fairness of the proposed consultation process and trusted the company, two factors that underlie a company’s social licence to operate.CITATION:Carr-Cornish, S and Moffat, K, 2016. Acid mine drainage is a serious environmental problem caused by the oxidation of sulfide minerals responsible for highly acidic, sulfate and metals-rich drainage. Several methods of mine waste management have been developed that reduce liabilities on environment. Layered co-mingling of waste rock with compacted tailings, covers with capillary barriers effect, and co-disposal of waste rock and tailings are these new methods which are used to reduce the formation of acid mine drainage. These methods shield waste rock dumps from oxygen. These techniques could prevent oxidation reaction. In this study, alkaline industrial wastes are used with acid generating tailings to inhibit acid mine drainage. The alkaline wastes selected are cement kiln dust (CKD) and red mud bauxite (RMB). These alkaline materials are used to keep neutral conditions in the fine material layer and to inhibit the metabolic activity of Thiobacillus ferroxidans which catalyses the oxidation of sulfide minerals. A series of timed static leaching tests were performed by reacting samples of mine tailings with two, five and ten per cent alkaline material in order to characterise geochemical balance between liquid and solid phases. Column tests have been set up with oxidised tailings, waste rock, CKD, and RMB. Column tests have been carried out to simulate layered co-mingling, covers, liners, and co-disposal of waste rock and tailings. Column leach tests were conducted in order to investigate the long-term neutralisation potential of alkaline materials and the drainage water quality. Bacteria counting were performed on each sample after testing. The results obtained show that the addition of alkaline materials permit the retention of near neutral conditions in the fine material layer, thus increasing water quality and preventing bacteria development. In fact, the pH results show that the use of five per cent, ten per cent CKD or ten per cent of a mixture of CKD and RMB permit the retention of neutral pH conditions in the reactive layer. At these percent rates, the concentrations of Al, Fe, Cu, Zn, and SO4 in solution are significantly reduced compared to those obtained with the tailings only. In presence of waste rock, the relative position of the fine material layer is important. When the fine material layer overlaying reactive waste rock is composted of reactive tailings with ten per cent CKD and ten per cent (CKD:RMB), a delay was observed before achievement of near neutral pH. The neutral pH conditions remain stable over time. The mixture of CKD and RMB provides a better short-term neutralisation than the use of CKD alone. The use of alkaline materials is beneficial in order to reduce the concentrations of Fe and other metals such as Cu and Zn as well as the number of viable bacteria. The use of ten per cent RMB alone does not involve the neutralisation of reactive tailings. In the cases where the fine-grained layer are below or mixed with the waste rocks, the near neutral pH values are directly reached with ten per cent CKD. However, the pH values decrease rapidly and the number of viable bacteria increases.

Historically, key closure risks have been studied during operations and then further assessed as cessation of mining approaches. Only in the past couple of decades or so has progressive rehabilitation and closure become an integral part of regulatory frameworks, sustainable mine planning and more recently, new project and development planning. It is now broadly accepted that the best closure outcomes occur when rehabilitation and closure are properly considered upfront, during the early stages of a mine development project and well before mining occurs. Increasingly, regulatory processes are requiring more diligence on early closure planning, often as part of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and approvals process, rather than later in dedicated closure study phases. There is an opportunity to use the information generated during this phase to make better decisions on project selection, design, mining methodology and all other facets of the mining operation.

The comprehensive processing of raw materials and the tendency to waste-free production require the combination of various methods of concentrating mineral resources. Magnetic separation, an ecologically clean method of concentration, is one step in the technological cycle of ore processing, and cleaning and classifying of raw materials. Separators with superconducting magnetic systems cooled by liquid helium are the novel equipment for practical concentration. Recently, high-gradient (HGMS) and open-gradient (OGMS) magnetic separators using the effect of superconductivity have appeared. The separators of the first type are expedient in the head-end of the technological cycle, as they are most efficient for processing of particles 100 ¦m and greater in size. In this case the main task is to obtain pure tailings with a minimum amount of the useful component. This method allows the essential reduction in the cost of the subsequent crushing and grinding, because only the magnetic concentrate is directed to further processing. The separators of the VGMS type are used more efficiently in the final stages of the concentration cycle to condition the end product. The present work is devoted to the theoretical and experimental investigation of the motion of weakly magnetic particles in the working chamber of superconducting separators of the open-gradient magnetic separator (OGMS) and HGMS types. The flat OGMS is equipped by a magnetic system with NbTi racetracks cooled by liquid helium. The chamber is divided into zones by partitions parallel to the plane of the magnetic system. It is shown how, depending on the number of the zones and their depths, the extraction function of the OGMS varies and the transition from the OGMS to the HGMS occurs. The particles 2 mm and less in size are considered. The extraction parameter distribution of the particles was measured for a multicomponent weakly magnetic ore. It was experimentally shown that xD2 is the extraction parameter for the particles in the OGMS on condition that (p-po)D /l8/tl/g

"For moisture samples, the International Standard for iron ore sampling states the following: Moisture samples shall be processed as soon as possible and test portions weighed immediately. If this is not possible, samples shall be stored in non-absorbent airtight containers with a minimum of free air space to minimise any change in moisture content, but should be prepared without delay. ISO 3082 (2009)Prescribing what to do is of course easy. Putting it in practice is, however, a little more problematic.The iron ore industry has seen quite some changes in the last ten to 15 years, such as: a large increase in the volume of seaborne trade new ore types and blends coming onto the market new mines, processing plants and port facilities producing more and loading faster an increase in wet processed ore products a dramatic rise and then equally dramatic fall in the iron ore price followed by a recent recovery.All of the above have had an effect on sampling facilities. The large increase in volume coupled with ambitions such as labour efficiency, safer operations and higher precision has driven the installation and retrofitting of automated sampling and robotic sampling preparation plants in order to keep up with increased quality control.Designers of sampling facilities are invariably instructed to build plants that comply with ISO 3082. In general this means that the plants are compliant in respect of the number of primary increments, gross sample masses and sample division rules. The clause at the beginning of this abstract is mostly overlooked as it only appears in a section (4.1) describing the basic requirements of a sampling system.An error of 0.1 per cent in moisture changes the value of 1 Mt of iron ore at US$50/t by US$50 000. At 700 Mt/a of Australian iron ore exports, this is US$35 M. Frequently, errors from 0.5 to 1 per cent in moisture measurements are encountered.In comparison an error of 0.1 per cent Fe is US$0.081 (US$50/t and 62 per cent Fe base) per tonne, that is US$81 000 per Mt or about US$51 M for the same Australian annual iron ore exports.It is somewhat mystifying that we in the ISO Technical committees spend extraordinary energy (= money and time) on improving measurement techniques, whilst the big costs are in sampling errors. The Tooloom gold field is located within the New England Fold Belt in the far northeast of New South Wales, approximately 130 km south southwest of Brisbane. Gold was first discovered at Tooloom in 1857. Within a few years up to 10 000 people were mining placer gold deposits in the Tooloom valley and a few tried their hand at mining hard rock occurrences as well. Mining of alluvial gold continued in a small way at Tooloom until very recently, but only in the last few years, since Malachite Resources acquired its interest at Tooloom (now 100 per cent), has the full potential of this large, reduced intrusion-related gold field been appreciated. By the mid 1870s, once the alluvials were largely worked out, most of the early miners had made the 270 km trek north to the newly discovered Gympie gold field and Tooloom slipped into obscurity. Such was this obscurity that the Tooloom gold field was not recorded on published Government geological maps until 2001, four years after Malachite became involved. The many hard rock prospects that Malachite has identified in recent years were largely or completely unknown. Tooloom is a good example of blinkered thinking when it comes to modern mineral exploration. The New England province in NSW has long been the æpoor relationÆ to the much better known and more highly favoured Lachlan Fold Belt in NSW. It has also suffered serious neglect compared with the Queensland part of the New England Fold Belt that hosts such major gold deposits as Mt Morgan (>7 Moz), Gympie (>3 Moz) and Cracow (>1 Moz). Tooloom is proof that prospective geology does not stop at state borders.

Predicting the physical characteristics of various ore types has for long been a difficult problem during mining. Grade control practices tend to concentrate on the chemical grade of the ore. Estimation of physical characteristics such as beneficiation behaviour is commonly limited to the simplistic application of historical averages. Large amounts of geochemical data are often gathered during the exploration and mining stages of a project, especially in ferrous and base metal deposits. In addition to the elements of principal economic interest, samples are often analysed for suites of gangue constituents to determine whether the mineralisation lies within target specifications. This multi-element data is often put to no other use than this simple chemical classification, yet it may present the geologist or metallurgist with valuable insights into the mineral content and physical characteristics of the deposit. Normative mineral estimates have been used as a method for characterising igneous rocks for almost 100 years. The method establishes and applies a set of sequential rules, by which the chemical components of a sample are assigned to mineral components. Provided that it is possible to make some realistic assumptions about the mineral species likely to be present in a rock unit or deposit and their paragenesis, this approach can be extended to a variety of mineral deposits. The geochemical data that are routinely collected when, for example, drilling iron ore and base metal deposits, can be used to derive estimates of normative mineral content. These estimates can be used to characterise physical or metallurgical aspects of the ore, such as density, beneficiation behaviour and metal recovery. This paper examines the application of normative mineral estimates to a variety of practical resource characterisation problems. The potential for predicting the lump and fines proportions of iron and manganese ores is also discussed.

Iron and steel production is responsible for approximately 6.3 per cent of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Direct reduction of iron with hydrogen is a potential route for decarbonising the iron and steel industry. Extensive small-scale laboratory experiments have been performed to test the feasibility of hydrogen-direct reduction of iron ores sourced from diverse geographical locations. However, test results from the batch reduction of small-sample do not necessarily translate to continuous commercial-scale processes. Establishing a small-scale continuous test reactor for H2- DRI process is challenging, requiring substantial resources and investment. The limited availability of small-scale reactors that enable testing under relevant conditions has become a major obstacle for H2-DRI development, leaving a big gap between laboratory success and proof of commercial feasibility. Here, we report on the recent commissioning of a continuous counter-flow vertical shaft reactor, which has a processing capacity of 6 kg/hr iron ore pellets at up to 100 NL/min H2 flow. We believe this to currently be the largest H2-DRI facility in the Southern Hemisphere. In this talk, we will discuss the design and construction journey for this reactor, starting from the initial system design to the initial demonstration of H2 reduction of titanomagnetite ironsand pellets. This reactor now enables a range of research capacities, including the validation of laboratory results on a larger scale with practical operational variables, feasibility assessment of hydrogen direct reduction of different iron ores on a commercial scale; identification of scalability, sticking, and other potential issues before building a full-scale plant; and a viable solution for producing small-quantity DRIs for downstream melting investigations. Overall, this new research facility offers significant benefits for assisting the transformation of iron and steel production to a more sustainable and green industry.

An Australian Working Group has been compiling a guide for operators to use in order to improve the efficacy of their routine and non-routine sampling tasks within their coal preparation process. The guide focuses on unit operations within the process, and not conveyor belts or transfer stations that are adequately covered by the existing Standard ISO 13909.Representative sampling of unit operations is generally an after-thought following plant construction, whether that be a result of oversight, or more commonly, capital cost minimisation during initial construction. Minimising capital cost by avoiding adequate sampling systems is generally a poor decision, since the result is a process that cannot be adequately measured, meaning that it cannot be adequately managed and optimised.The use of the term ‘guide’ rather than ‘standard’ is intentional. Practical means of sampling unit operations within existing plants generally relies on a compromise between sample representativity (minimisation of bias) and sampling feasibility. The guide does not endorse poor sampling practice, but instead offers practical guidance to overcome, to the extent reasonably possible, real-life limitations.When it comes to sampling any particular process, it is almost always necessary to make a professional judgement as to whether or not the proposed samples are likely to be sufficiently representative such that the sampling will be worthwhile. Such judgement needs to be exercised by personnel who understand the principles of sampling, as they apply to the stream being sampled. There are many circumstances where available methods for sampling of a particular stream will be meaningless, and in such circumstances analytical data from that sampling will only serve to propagate poor decision-making.This paper outlines the approach for the guide, the areas it covers and the approaches adopted for different types of unit operations and associated equipment configurations.CITATION:Atkinson, B W and Docherty, J, 2017. Continuous development of complex new steel grades to meet the ever-increasing demand of high performance causes recurrent issues in steel continuous casting such as surface quality defects (eg cracks, depressions, deep oscillation marks) and productivity challenges (eg faster casting, near-net shape casting). Continuous casting of steel is a highly successful metallurgical process. Much of this success can be attributed to the performance of the casting powder that is added to the top of the mould, creates a liquid slag pool as it is heated, and forms a slag film between the watercooled copper mould and steel shell during its passage down the mould. Mould powder selection is a compromise between the conflicting requirements of heat transfer and lubrication. In an EU RFCS (Research Fund for Coal and Steel)-funded project, various techniques are developed to offer the opportunity to adapt the slag film to meet the conflicting needs in different parts of the mould such that mild cooling can be generated in the meniscus, mid-broad face or corner areas whilst maintaining lubrication and offering higher cooling rates in other areas of mould. This has significant potential to address the industrial issues in product quality and productivity of continuous casting. This paper reports, as part of the EU RFCS project, the determination of crystallinity and porosity in slag films for casting challenging and innovative steel grades using new methods. In comparison with the methods such as X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis and optical microscopy / scanning electron microscopy (OM/SEM) analysis that are currently adopted by the industries, EBSD (electron backscatter diffraction) has been employed to determine the crystallinity of the slag films taken from industry casters. The PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) operation is a large scale coalmine operating on the east coast of Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia. Originally developed under a coal contract of work (CCOW) with the Indonesian Government, new legislation has led to uncertainty as to the actual life of the mine, the size of the operating lease or mining area, the rehabilitation compliance requirements and other areas of concern. The actual life-of-mine (LOM) plan is therefore in a constant state of flux and must be updated and modified with every new piece of information.Under the CCOW system, the mine life ran from the first year of production (1992) for 30 years (2021), with the potential to extend for a further two ten-year periods. KPC has always intended to run until at least 2041. Under the new legislation, the potential term of the CCOW (to be replaced by a mining license) is open to interpretation, resulting in KPC having to prepare plans allowing for a LOM that may end in 2021, 2031, 2041 or a range of other possible periods of time.Uncertainty about legislation (and hence the mine life) possible production rates and available work areas; variable coal prices and costs; varying management contexts; the substantial reserves available; difficulty sourcing dump space; potential rehabilitation costs and the dependence of a community of over 100 000 people on a single operation sees the LOM and mine closure teams preparing dynamic yet thoroughly robust plans that are updated on multiple occasions per year.This paper will describe the procedure followed by KPC and the potentially show stopping issues that must be dealt with.CITATION:Bennett, S M and Manege, I, ?2014. The difficulty in fine particle flotation has been attributed, among other things, to a low bubble-particle collision efficiency. Many technologies have been developed which aim at increasing bubble-particle collision efficiency, either by generating micro bubbles or by enlarging particle sizes. However, commercial applications of these technologies are limited. Over the last five years COREM has been actively testing fine particle froth flotation technologies with the objective of commercialisation. Several fine particle flotation technologies, such as dissolved air flotation, electro-flotation, floc flotation, selective flocculation-flotation and carrier flotation, were tested on both single minerals and ore samples in order to identify the reasons that prevented these technologies from being used on a commercial scale. It was found that the two most noticeable factors that prevented the successful application of these technologies were: Mechanical entrainment of fine gangue minerals. This was a general problem in fine particle flotation, but was aggravated by these technologies that either generated micro bubbles or enlarged the sizes of hydrophobic particles. Oxidation of (sulfide) minerals that resulted in hydrophilic oxidation product coatings. The oxidised fine particles could not be recovered by these fine particle flotation technologies effectively. Solutions to the two problems, ie gangue entrainment and fine particle oxidation, were proposed and tested. It seems that polymeric depressants with both depression and flocculation functions could significantly reduce gangue entrainment, and hydrophilic surfaces of oxidised fine particles could be modified by high intensity conditioning or controlled sulfidisation, thus increasing the recoveries of fine valuable minerals. The improved fine valuable particle flotation and reduced fine gangue entrainment along with fine particle flotation technologies resulted in much improved flotation separation of fine particles.

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) in wastewater treatment as a separation process of submillimetre biological flocs is based on the generation of bubble/floc aggregates. DAF is a complex process but has got advantages, such as allowing a high hydraulic load, compared to sedimentation. A thorough knowledge of the physics of the DAF process is, however, still lacking. This paper will present results of experimental studies on three aspects of significance to the separation process û the flow structure in the flotation tank, rise velocities of aggregates, influence of floc size on the separation efficiency. Flow structure. Measurements were performed in a pilot plant mapping and visualising the velocity field. The dispersion water (bubbles) had a decisive influence on the flow structure due to the effect of the bubbles on the bulk water density. Stratified conditions with a less dense, bubble-containing upper layer and a clear water, denser bottom layer were important for a good separation. A simple model of the stratified flow structure was elaborated making it possible to interpret the function of the aggregate rise velocities. Bubble/floc aggregates. The dynamics of single flocs, bubbles, aggregates were visualised using a borescope + CCD video camera + digital recorder + image analysis. Sequences of video frames made it possible to determine the rise velocities of the single aggregates. These velocities were found to be in the range 1 - 9 mm/s with a tendency for large flocs to have higher rise velocities. Separation versus floc size. The floc size distribution was measured in the DAF process. Data from three different DAF cases showed, that large flocs (> about 100 ¦m) were entirely separated, whereas small flocs experienced a less good separation. It was, moreover, found, that a very significant separation of flocs took place in the very upstream end of the separation zone in a pilot plant case.
