The crystallisation behaviour of low melting point CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO inclusions greatly affect the deformability of inclusions during the rolling process. The crystallisation characteristics of CaO-SiO2- Al2O3-MgO melts representing the oxide inclusions in Si-Mn killed steel were systematically investigated. The effect of Al2O3 and MgO contents on the crystallisation change were analysed under a fixed CaO/SiO2 in the complex inclusions. The continuous-cooling-transformation (CCT) and time-temperature-transformation (TTT) experiments were conducted. The results showed that the increase of MgO content increases the crystallisation ability of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO inclusions, while the increase of Al2O3 content has the opposite effect. The viscosity, liquidus temperature of oxide melt and also the initial crystallisation potential might be the reasons for the change in crystallisation behaviour. Also, the crystallisation activation energy could semi-quantitatively characterise the crystal growth during the crystallisation of inclusions. To obtain low melting point plasticized CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO (CaO/SiO2=1) system inclusions, the Al2O3 content of the system needs to be controlled larger than 15 wt per cent and the MgO content should be kept at a small amount.

Over recent years a number of techniques have been developed as part of the Australian Minerals Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 project to represent mathematically or measure directly subprocesses occurring in flotation cells. These include the determination of a:machine parameter (bubble surface area flux, Sb); froth parameter (froth recovery, Rf); entrainment and drainage parameters; and ore floatability parameter (Pi). A cost-effective methodology was developed for using these techniques to derive models of flotation circuits. This methodology was applied to derive a model of the flotation circuit at the Western Mining Corporation (WMC) Ltd Mt Keith Nickel Concentrator. The model was used to simulate a number of minor circuit flowsheet changes, the results of which are discussed in this paper. One year later, a second study of this plant was conducted. In this second study, data were collected while operating the plant in the flowsheet configurations that were simulated from the model developed from the first study. The results obtained from the second study showed reasonable agreement with the trends predicted from the first study model; discrepancies can be explained in terms of the model assumptions. This suggests that this simple circuit modelling methodology can be useful in assisting plant engineers to optimise flotation circuits.

Following the Paris Agreement adopted in 2015 and the SDGs, reduction of CO2 emissions has been taken up as an issue worldwide, and the steel industry, which has a particularly large emission, is required to significantly reduce it. Most of the CO2 generated in the steel industry is generated from the ironmaking process, due to the use of coke and its raw material coal in the ironmaking process. JFE Steel Corporation has been considering the use of hydrocarbon-based gaseous fuels and liquid fuels as a partial alternative to coke breeze used in the sintering process since 2006, immediately after the Kyoto Protocol came into effect in 2005. In a laboratory study, a pot test was used to investigate the effect of the type of fuel, its amount and its injection method on the heat pattern in sinter bed. As a result, the authors developed a technology, in which a predetermined amount of gas fuel or liquid fuel was injected from the surface of sintering bed to extend the holding time of 1200°C or higher at which liquid phase sintering occurs in the layer, to improve the sinter strength while reducing the amount of coke breeze. The authors succeeded in putting this technology to practical use using hydrocarbon-based gas fuel in 2009 and achieved a maximum annual reduction of 60 000 tons of CO2 per sintering machine. In this report, the authors introduce the results of laboratory studies on the use of various energy sources, the practical application of the technology for injecting hydrocarbon-based gaseous fuel into the sintering machine, and the operational results.

The CO2 footprints in the production of Mn-ferroalloys and silicon/ferrosilicon are correlated with the fossil carbon consumption. The CO2 emissions may be reduced in the Mn-ferroalloy process by increasing the degree of prereduction and reduction of carbonate materials, while the silicon/ferrosilicon process is optimised based on silicon yield. By changing the fossil reductant into biogenic reductants, the global warming potential will be decreased even more. Even if the reductants are biogenic reductants, there will still be a global warming potential (GWP) in eg the electrode consumption and the CH4 emissions in the charcoal production. To reduce the use of fossil reductants there are also more disruptive technologies like the use of H2 that at least for the silicon production is on a very low technology readiness level (TRL). Using metallothermic processes will reduce the use of carbon but requires carbon neutral metal reductants. Electrowinning can have low CO2 emissions, and the electrowinning of pure Mn is a technology of high TRL. Salt and oxide electrolysis is under investigation for both Mn and Si production however the research is still on a low TRL. The use of CCS/CCU (carbon capture storage/utilisation) is a part of obtaining carbon neutral processes. Last, the energy mix used for these energy demanding processes is discussed.

Electro-Slag Remelting (ESR) is a process capable of producing ingots with much lower centre-line segregation and better internal soundness than conventional ingot casting processes, as well as lower inclusion and sulfur concentrations. This process is commonly used for alloyed steels intended for critical applications like components of marine turbines, supercritical powerplants and rocket motor casings. It involves melting a metal electrode using electrical resistive heating in a slag pool and re-solidification of the resulting metal droplets beneath the slag layer, forming an ingot. Conventional ESR fluxes consist primarily of CaF2, Al2O3 and CaO, along with minor concentrations of SiO2, MgO etc. The emission of fluoride vapour from the molten slag causes several environmental and health problems, triggering a need to develop and reduce the fluoride content in the ESR flux. The present study aims to develop low-CaF2 alternatives to commercial ESR fluxes without compromising on productivity and the surface quality of the refined ingot. Thus, the modification in chemical composition needs to satisfy properties like electrical resistivity, viscosity and liquidus temperature, essential for efficient ESR operation. Since electrical resistivity and viscosity are highly dependent on the ionic structure of the molten slag, it is important to understand the effect of compositional modification on the structure of the flux. The present study employs Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy to investigate the structural variations in the modified fluxes, especially the effect of changing SiO2 concentration, in comparison with conventional CaF2-rich fluxes. Additionally, thermal analysis (Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)) has been carried out to characterise the melting behaviour of the fluxes. The findings are compared with simulations carried out using the FactSage™ software, ver 8.3 (GTT Technologies, Aachen, Germany). Simultaneous analysis of liquidus temperature and the structure is expected to help in identifying the practical suitability of modified ESR flux compositions for industrial implementation.

Shales form distinctive peaks in natural gamma downhole logs, which are used to manually identify the location of ore boundaries. These shales form important lithology markers that can potentially be automatically identified using Gaussian processes. This approach is trialled using data from a typical iron ore mine in Western Australia which contains the Marra Mamba sequence of the Hamersley province.The method uses Gaussian processes (GPs) with a single length scale squared exponential covariance function. A library of 8 m sections, where natural gamma measurements were taken at 10 cm intervals down the hole, was used to train the GP model. This library was iteratively improved and was tested using natural gamma logs that were not included in the library. Areas that were misclassified or were not clearly classifi ed were added to the library. The new library was then used to train the model and improve the results. The trials used a double gamma peak from the NS3 and NS4 shales at the boundary between the Newman 1 and Newman 2 ore zonesin the Newman member and the AS1 and AS2 shales at the base of the West Angelas member. The results show that both boundaries can be identifi ed with an accuracy of over 99 per cent. The classification has the highest accuracy on undeformed shales. This method provides a fast, accurate and objective identifi cation of shale and ore boundaries and can potentially replace the current manual detection.

Chromite was recorded among the rare minerals in the natural beach sand concentrates on the coast of Northern New South Wales by Whitworth(l) in 1931, and the commercial production of zircon and rutile from these beach sands has yielded concentrates of ilmenite with small amounts of chromium. The chromite is a detrimental impurity in the utilisation of the ilmenite, and the difficulties that attend the separation of the small amount of chromite from the ilmunite have raised suggestions from time to time that chromite occurs with ilmenite in composite grains. The absence of such composite grains and the nature of the chromite grains has been indicated by the following mineragraphic examination of magnetic concentrates containing chromite which were prepared by the C.S.I.R. Ore Dressing Laboratory, Melbourne University, from ilmenite concentrates from beach sands at Norrie's Head, County Rous, New South Wales and Stradbroke Island, Queensland.The magnetic concentrates from each locality are divided into five fractions, and the No. 1 concentrate is the most highly magnetic and the tailing the least magnetic. Concentrations of Ga in the 48 samples ranged from 8 to 144 mg kg-1 and varies widely from place to place within each geothermal area. Gallium is contained within the alumino-silicate structure of clay in the mud, having substituted mainly for Al. Suggested deposition mechanisms for Ga also involve co-precipitation with Sb, As, and SiO2 colloids. Digestion trials, carried out to determine extraction conditions for possible commercial exploitation, showed that heating the mud to 500 - 600¦C for 1 hour followed by acid/alkali treatment gave complete recoveries.

In a fundamental study of the physical chemistry of steelmaking slag, equilibra bet- ween hydrogen-water vapour gas mixtures and liquid slags contained in solid iron crucibles have been measured for four binary slags, FetO-CaO, FetO-Si02, FetO-TiO2 and FetO-Al203 at 14000C. From the data, the activity of iron oxide and the ratio of ferrous and ferric ions (A = Fe3+/Fe2+) were calculated for the slag composition. The best ionic model is found to be that based on regular solution of cations. The oxygen distribution between slag and metal is quantitatively expressed by this model over a wide range of slag composition.

Western Mining Corporation (W.M.C.)operate a 30 000 tpa nickel refinery at Kwinana, W.A. using the Sherritt Gordon Process. Following ammonia/air leaching of sulphideminerals and subsequent copper removal, nickel metal is produced as powder by hydrogen red-uction of the ammonium sulphate-rich solution. Batchwise reduction in pressure autoclaves is preceded by an oxidation/hydrolysis step to ensure nickel powder quality.The reduction process is energy intensive, requiring high temperatures and pressures. Present energy requirement is 24 GJ per tonne of nickel reduced. Of this, 95% represents steam and hydrogen consumption and 5% electric power. The design and operation of the red-uction circuit is reviewed, outlining the main areas of steam and hydrogen usage.

The process uses sodium hydroxide and sodium nitrate reagents as in conventional Harris refining plants, selectively removing the arsenic to the caustic phase at an operating temperature of 420-450¦C. A novel feature of the process concept is continuous treatment of loaded caustic slag for recovery of arsenic as a sandy crystal product suitable for further processing to arsenic trioxide. A large pilot plant was constructed and operated over a period of 3 years to develop materials handling techniques and equipment components and to prove the concept. Stable operations were achieved at equivalent capacities of 200 tonne/yr arsenic removal. The process is being considered in plans for expansion of bullion softening capacity at Port Pirie.

Seafloor massive sulfide deposits contain bonanza grades of gold, silver, copper and zinc metals. The deposits are often found at depths of one kilometre or more. They are characterised by active chimneys or smokers venting fluids at over 300¦C, with extremely low pH values. Mining of these deposits presents risks for both industry and governments at orders of magnitude higher than terrestrial mining This paper briefly discusses some of the core risks concerning the development of SMS mining including: technical, economic, environmental, legal, social, and research and development. Until and unless these risks are eliminated or minimised, the embryonic deep sea mining industry will remain just that, and these deposits will remain a fascinating, unexploited geological curiosity.

Equilibrium in the reaction H2(g) + [%0] (in liquid copper) = H2O (g) was investigated at temperatures between 1200 -and 1350°C with p(H2Oj/p(H2) ratios between 1 to 15. A semi-microbalance was used for direct measurement of dissolved oxygen in molten copper. Oxygen was found to obey Henry's law under the experimental conditions used. Extractive metallurgy in the mining industry in Western Australia has diversified and increased in the last 11 years. Before 1980, the industry mainly produced alumina, nickel, mineral sands and iron ore, with the gold industry restricted to five operating plants using Merrill-Crowe technology. In 1981 Carbon-in-pulp (C]P) plants were commissioned at Kambalda, Kalgoorlie and Meekatharra.Currently, the gold industry has some seventy CIP plants in operation, production of synthetic rutile has increased tenfold to 500 000 tpa, alumina production has doubled and production of copper, lead and zinc concentrates has begun. Other extractive metallurgy plants recover tin, niobium and tantalum, silicon, titanium dioxide and zirconia. Current proposals include vanadium, steel and rare earths.

The ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) Water Quality Guidelines (the Guidelines) are the primary reference used in Australia and New Zealand for managing and regulating water quality. For most mining operations in Queensland, the environmental authority (EA – licence) incorporates the national default guideline values (GVs) for ecosystem protection as trigger levels (TLs). Exceedances of TLs ‘trigger’ further investigation and reporting. A review of the surface water compliance history at a metalliferous mine in North West Queensland identified minor exceedances of the cobalt GV as a common trigger for investigation and compliance reporting.The reliability of GVs is dependent on the availability and quality of ecotoxicology data for the relevant contaminant. The current national default GV for cobalt of 1.4 µg/L is classified as a low reliability GV due to the lack of available data at the time it was derived (ANZECC/ARMCANZ, 2000).The Guidelines are presently being revised and the toxicant GVs will be available as a set of web-based values and associated technical briefs. The new platform will enable the timely revision of existing GVs and inclusion of GVs for additional toxicants. Cobalt was considered a priority toxicant for the Guidelines’ revision, but was not included in the revision process.A preliminary review of the international literature indicated that at least 15 additional chronic cobalt toxicity studies had been published since 2000, sufficient to derive a high reliability cobalt GV using the protocols developed for the revision of the Guidelines (Batley et al, 2014; Warne et al, 2015). The stability of open stopes in underground hard rock mines is influenced by several factors including the shape and size of the excavation, surrounding stresses as well as the degree of jointing. This paper presents a design methodology for stope analysis in jointed rock masses. The proposed approach relies on geological structural data to construct realistic three-dimensional joint network models. The stability of an open stope is determined based on a limit equilibrium analysis.

The rnunber of Cenozoic volcanoes which has already been found in China surpasses 600. An ancient Chinese tourist, Xu Xiake (1587-1641 in the Ming Dynasty), mentioned in his travel notes the volcanoes and hot 'springs in Tengchong, a country of the Yunnan Province, 400 years ago. In 1927, the geologist, Yun Zhanli, expounded generally on the recent volcano distribution in China. In the '70's, China not only accomplished aerial photography and produced topographic and geological naps covering the whole country, but also obtained a new understanding of the geographic distribution and process of development of the Cenozoic volcanoes through Landsat imagery; interpretation and ground verification, together with C14 isotope dating and analysis of volcanic rocks.

Geomorphology is one of the most basic elements in geographic enviroments. Geomorphological mapping is significant in the spatial distribution of representing land form and understanding various features of geomorphology. Geomorphological mapping began very early in China, as the map, showing conekarst(karst pinnacles) of Juiyishan, Hunan province, it was drawn in 168B.C., which was excavated from Han tomb. Mawangdui, Changsha. Its original idea of map-making is rather similar to that of modern map and could undoutedly be the oldest map of tropical karst discovered in the world.Before liberation, landform mapping was done piecemeally and only a small number of maps were prepared by a few editor as insets.

The effect of temperature, time and SO2 concentration in the atmosphate have been studied for a complex Pb-Zn concentrate, which contained four sulphides and some organic material, in order to determine optimum roasting conditions. Under static roasting conditions virtually complete sulphation was achieved after roasting at 650¦C.2 hours in 10% SO2 in air. Both zinc ferrite and zinc silicate were observed to form early in the roasting, but continued exposure to SO2 -containing gases caused decomposition of these as the roasting time increased. Water and acid solubilities of iron, silica, calcium, magnesium and aluminium in the calcine were determined, as a function of roasting time, temperature and atmosphere composition.
