The Lady Loretta silver-lead-zinc deposit lies north of Mount Isa in folded and faulted Proterozoic carbonate sediments. The deposit was discovered in the late 1960's as a result of a soil geochemical survey. Subsequent surface drilling outlined mineralisation folded into a synclinal structure extending to a depth of 460 m and containing exceptionally high grades within the keel of the syncline. Pancontinental Mining Limited and Outokumpu Oy of Finland acquired the property in 1985.

It was shown that manganese dioxide could be used as an oxidant in acid thiourea leaching of a gold ore. Manganese dioxide could generate high redox potentials and was as effective as hydrogen peroxide in the leaching process. Results obtained under closely controlled leaching conditions confirmed that high redox potentials enabled faster dissolution of gold to be obtained but led to extremely high reagent consumptions (thiourea, acid, and manganese dioxide). Additions of sodium sulphite solution in an attempt to lower thiourea consumption by reducing formamidine disulphide back to thiourea were only marginally successful. Although thio- urea consumption was slightly decreased, the consumption of acid and manganese dioxide was substantially increased and there was no net benefit in using sulphite. Tests in which a single addition of mangan- ese dioxide was made before addition of thiourea minimized overall reagent consumption and gave only a slightly lower dissolution rate of gold. This is a promising technique for further Investigation.

This paper compares different results for overburden volume estimation assisted by geoestatistics, particularly using kriging methods. The main goal is to obtain the most reliable digital terrain model for the calculation of the overburden volume. The data was collected on an irregularly spaced grid and interpolated values were calculated to provide a denser, more regular data set before volume estimation. The field work was developed at the Butia-Leste Coal Mine, southern most Brazil, where an accurate survey was done using a total station theodolite with electronic data collector. The study was developed in five main steps: data acquisition, exploratory data analysis, spatial continuity measurements, point and block kriging estimation and verification of the results. Data acquisition was carried out on a 5 x 5 in grid. This dense grid provides an exhaustive data set of the real terrain against which data subsets can be compared for the various interpolation procedures and volume calculation. This provides an interesting insight into the influence of the number of data on the estimation error. Univariate statistics were used to compare each data subset and the exhaustive dataset. Ordinary kriging on the data subsets followed by contouring was carried out using Geoeas and Surfer software respectively. A subroutine written in C provided the link between the files generated in Geoeas and subsequent contouring routines embedded into the Surfer package. Omnidirectional and directional variograms were modelled defining the parameters for kriging estimation using Geoeas. Different variogram models were checked through cross validation prior to kriging. A comparison between the magnitude of the differences in volumes calculated with the different DTMs was attained. These final result indicates the sensitivity of the volume obtained to the number of data points. As the number of data points increases the estimation error decreases, but at some point there is no significant decrease in the final volume with the collection of additional data.

In the hard rocks of the Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden and Finland underground works have a long tradition. Today the subsurface has been taken into use for a wide variety of purposes. In this paper only the more uncon- ventional examples are described such as caverns for drinking water, sand bunkers, molasses silos, wine and liquor stores, cold stores, heat storage, waste disposal and state archives. The particular use of unlined high pressure tunnels and socalled air-cushions for hydropower schemes is discussed. The dual use of subsurface air-raid shelters for sports activities seems to be a special Nordic tradition. Some cost figures are given and the advantages of using the underground is Discussed.

Draglines have been used exclusively for primary overburden stripping at the German Creek Mine complex in central Queensland, where coal has been extracted from a series of ten open cut pits working seams of the German Creek Coal Measures. Due to the dip of the seams, most of the pits have now reached the limit of current economic viability and the emphasis has switched to underground extraction using longwall methods and to a new area of open cut reserves in the nearby Rangal Coal Measures at German Creek East. This area is characterised by weak Tertiary overburden, relatively steep dips and low strength intraformational shear planes at the top and bottom of the coal.The first pit, with a maximum depth to coal of 15 m at the low wall, avoided any major slope failure through use of scrapers to excavate the boxcut and dump the spoil away from the low wall. However, this method was not considered economically viable for the second pit where low wall depths reached 44 m. Following geotechnical investigations the boxcut was divided into a number of zones depending on depth of cover, dip and thickness of Tertiary clay. Slope stability was assessed for each zone using several analytical techniques to ensure that dragline mining would be acceptable. Slope design parameters incorporating various stabilisation techniques, notably an updip trench backfilled with competent spoil to form a low wall buttress prior to excavation of the boxcut panel, were successfully integrated into the mine plan after careful consideration of the complex scheduling to minimise rehandle.

The pressure along the top hori- zontal surface of embedded lining and the vertical sides are measured by pres -sure gauges embedded in sand medium. fhe test results show a complete figure of rupture characteristics of concrete lining embedded in soft ground which approximates alluvial deposite often occur in metro construction at cities near the river side. These test results have been taken as a reference in assessing the action behavior of concrete lining in certain cities in China.

Smelting is a process in which heat is applied to ores to produce metals. Impurities are removed by segregation in the slag, or converted to gases or sublimates and discharged up the flues. Mate- rials delivered into the smelter have generally been previously concentrated or processed at the mine, and the size of their particles, and also their chem- ical composition, greatly affect the smelting proc- ess. Some impurities are more difficult to remove than others, and are more objectionable in the finished product. The first metal mine in Australia was opened near Glen Osmond in South Australia in 1841, for silver-lead ore. It was followed by the Kapunda Mine for copper in 1844 and by the very signifi- cant Burra Mine, also for copper, in 1845 (Figure 1). A major part of their ores could not be exported profitably for smelting in England and Wales where the large smelters were then located. In addition to treating ores from Cornwall these also smelted ores from recently opened mines in Cuba, Chile, and Mexico. The Welsh smelting process (Figure 2) was developed over a period of years to utilise Welsh coal to treat copper ores particularly from Corn- wall. The first step consisted of a calcination to remove sufficient sulphur from sulphide ores so that subsequent melting operations would produce copper matte, a copper-iron-sulphide which melted at about 1050¦C. Subsequently refined to white metal with the addition of carbonate and oxide ores when these were available, and often through an intermediate step of blue metal, this matte was finally oxidised to pure copper, or as pure as it could be made in those days. The movement of metal towards greater purity was matched by a reverse flow of slag, carrying reducing quantities of copper, so that the slag rejected from the first melting process carried the minimum quantity of copper. Chemical analysis was virtually unknown. Materials were assayed in the laboratory by a small scale smelting process, and the purity of the final refined copper was judged b} the ease with Mhich it could be hammered into thin sheets.

This paper describes the development and installation of equipment for continuously measuring separating density in the dense medium cyclone circuits of the four million tpa Port Kembla B/C plant coal washeries. Monitoring equipment consisting of magnetic coils and differential pressure cells were installed in U-tubes taking the full flow of magnetite from the drain sections of the product drain and rinse screens. The monitoring equipment measures overflow magnetics concentration and overflow density continuously and has operated since 1989. From these measurements and calibration trials, the separating density of operating cyclone modules can be inferred reliably. Variographic analyses of the data show that medium density control to +/- 0.002 RD units and separation density control to +/- 0.007 RD units are achievable. Either method for measuring separation density can be used with approximately the same accuracy, although the overflow density measurement technique suffers from the need to have regular flushing of the Dp cells which complicates the signal analysis. Data from the plant shows that separation density can be controlled by regulating medium density, but the assumption of a constant offset between medium density and separation density is erroneous.

Geological data processing by machine enables'an increased rate of coverage, better supervision and control of field programmes, increased effectiveness of field operators, and vastly improved access to old and new field data. Even a system of restricted felxibility enables a mapping programme to be organ- ized and conducted independent of personnel changes, whilst elimination of much compilation time increases the rate of cover- age such that it relates to mode of transport and geological complexity rather than to personality factors. A machine is useful only if applied to tasks suited to its capabilities, and must be aimed at those types of mapping in which a limited number of attributes adequately define the problem, and the data is of a form suited to coding and is normally collected in sufficient abundance to make compilation wearisome. Machine systems are therefore unsuited to most types of lithological mapping and to most types of exploration in new areas, but have proved useful in many branched of cartographic geophysics (e.g. gravity and magnetics), and in cartographic Geochemistry.

Intorducing the hypothesis that the cause ,òi spontaneous combustion of coal is depending un the accumulation of heat produced by its oxidation, the authors derived the equation expressing the temperature change in a heap i fine coal. To solve the equation, thermal conductivity, specific heat and rate of heat ,eneration of fine coal (-48 mesh) were measured at various temperatures in the range _'0-65¦C. The equation was solved numerically and the volume of fine coal which would ignite spontaneously was estimated as the function of ambient temperature. Using 170 Kg of fine coal, everal experiments for confirmation were conducted. At the ambient temperatures of 60¦C nd 50¦C, coal began to fire spontaneously brut 00 and 110 hours later respectively. Underground mining operations on Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile were suspended in 1976, suffering the combined effects of low gold prices and grades. A subsequent substantial increase in the gold price led to the decision by Kalgoorlie Mining Associates to reopen their mines in 1979. The two shafts selected for access required excessive maintenance. The geological assessment and development parameters prescribed have been successfully used to establish reserves to maintain production at a 390 000 tonnes per annum rate. While ore reserve grade is being maintained from primary stoping sources, supplementary lower grade ore is drawn from remnant pillars and stopes at lower cost.Performance by the workforce has reached levels previously attained and a record tonnage was hoisted in the fourth year after recommencement.Keywords : Golden Mile lodes, geological research, payruns, cut and fill, mill holes, gold price, ore grade, amalgamation.

IN 1904-5 diamond drilling operations in the Mount Morgan mine proved the presence of some millions of tons of rich copper-gold ore, averaging about 45%to 50%silica and 22%Fe as sulphide. To smelt this ore in blast furnaces, without previous concentration, large quantities of basic flux were required. Unlimited quantities of cheap limestone were available at Marmor, on the GladstoneRockhampton railway, 50 miles from Mount Morgan, but the supply of iron flux was a more difficult problem. Smelting Operations started with one furnace in January, 1906, using as flux low-grade sulphide ore from the mine, containing very little silica. When the second furnace was blown in this was supplemented by ironstone from small deposits in the immediate district. It was recognized that these sources of supply would be insufficient to keep the full plant going after the third furnace had been blown in. Accordingly, the deposits at Kabra and Mount Etna were opened, neither of which proved capable of supplying the quantity required-viz., 1000 tons per week. Negotiations were meanwhile being conducted with the Marble Island Iron and Limestone Co. to obtain the right to mine at Iron Island, where a sufficiently large deposit was known to exist. The Myojin Tunnel, located on the Shikoku Expressway being constructed by the Japan Highway Public Corporation, is 3,770 m long with a cross sectional area of 80 m2. Kajima Corporation, the contractor for the northern construction section of this tunnel, adopted here its newly developed "mini-bench" method of excavation. The objectives of this method were 1. to be able to perform all tunnelling operations using the whole cross sectional area of the tunnel under any ground conditions, and 2. to be able to vary the length of the mini-bench within the range of 0 to 7 m according to ground conditions. In order to achieve these objectives, original, sophisticated equipment was developed and employed in the work. One of the newly developed machines is a special jumbo, a hydraulic crawler jumbo with five rotary type booms. This machine is capable of accommodating variation in the length of the mini-bench accompanying changes in ground conditions and is equipped with a special mechanism by which the positions of the booms can be controlled by means of hydraulic cylinders. Also developed was a shotcrete robot for use with the mini-bench method which has the control board near the shotcrete nozzle for close control of application.

My forebears migrated to South Australia in the 1830s, 1840s and 1850s. All of them were literate but, because they moved about South Australia looking for work, family papers have become scat- tered and I am left with a few fragments. Some years ago I was intrigued to find among my fath- er's books a frontispiece in an old Anglican Book of Lessons. As can be seen Joseph, a mining smith, was also a Freemason. Thus my interest was aroused. I know some- thing of modern day mining communities in South Australia and wondered what they were like 100 or more years ago.

Investigations were carried out to understand the effect of liquid viscosity (u = 1 x 10-3 - 5 x 10-' Ns/m2) on the size of primary bubbles formed at high gas injection rates (Q = 100 - 1000 cc/s, U = 0.04 - 0.42 mach) under room temperature conditions using flush tuyere (3 mm diameter) operating vertically upward. Tuyere pressure fluctuations were correlated to the mode of bubble formation by simultaneously filming the bubble and the corresponding tuyere pressure fluctuations displayed on an oscilloscope screen. A simple mathematical treatment is presented to estimate bubble size in viscous liquids. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental measurements.

Geotechnical conditions often have a critical influence on the design of new open pit and underground mines, but they are often considered of secondary importance in relation to other factors, such as detailed geology, orebody geometry and grade distribution. As a result, geotechnical studies may not be carried out during early project investigations or, at best, may be given only superficial attention, often to the overall detriment of the project. Technically and economically, it is logical that geotechnical studies should be integrated with geological investigations as soon as it becomes evident that the particular deposit may prove to be economic. The paper discusses the use of geotechnical information in the selection of mining methods and mine design for underground mines and for wall design and assessment of excavation characteristics in open pit mines. It then considers methods of obtaining the relevant data, with particular reference to exploration boreholes. Selected case studies on the application of geotechnical data to mine design are Included.

Experiments were conducted to access the feasibility of removing zinc from lead slag by sulfation or chlorination or both. Gaseous sulfation with sulfur dioxide and oxygen released only 50 per cent of zinc even under the most severe conditions. Sulfation with concentrated sulfuric acid by a fast-leach process released 95 per cent of zinc while pug-roasting released a maximum of 78 per cent of zinc. Chloridization with NaCi in the presence of sulfating gas released 50 per cent of zinc, while direct chlorination with chlorine gas and oxygen released 85 per cent of zinc and 100 per cent of lead in a chloride condensate containing little impurities.

In eastern China, most of the copper skarn deposits occur in folded troughs which are controlled by the EW-trending faulted fold systems (the Pal-Asian geotectonic domain), and the NNE-trending rift or fault zones (the Marginal-Pacific geotectonic domain), particularly the later. From the north to the south, there are four troughs hosting the main copper skarn deposits in eastern China: the Yanliao Trough, the Yangzi River Trough, The Qiantang-Yuanshui Trough and the Zichen Trough. There are more than 30 copper skarn deposits in eastern China, and ore reserves of each deposit are between 30 to 100 Mt with average grades over 1 % Cu.

Detailed studies of the microstructures and compositions of zinc and lead blast furnace sinters have been undertaken. An analysis of the results obtained has indicated that in many cases the microstructures of these complex materials can be explained by the solidification of melts from pseudo-ternary phase systems. Further laboratory studies have been carried out to more accurately determine the extent of primary phase fields and the liquidus temperatures in the appropriate binary and ternary systems. This approach shows considerable promise in simplifying the descriptions of slag systems used in oxidising and reduction smelting processes for lead and zinc recovery.
