Ion exchange resins are an attractive alternative to activated carbon in both column and resin-in-pulp processes for the recovery of gold from cyanide solution. Resins are widely used for this purpose in the Soviet Union apparently in preference to activated carbons.A wide range of resins are available and the high level of resin technology is demon-strated in the resin processes used to recover uranium.The anionic gold complex, Au(CN) 2 , is selectively adsorbed onto weak and strong base resins. However other anionic cyanide complexes, cyanide ions and other anions from the process water are also adsorbed onto resin sites. Resin selectively for gold is not as high as it is for activated carbons. As a result similar gold loading capacities are obtained for resins and carbons when used in plant liquors.

With increasing demand for more efficient production from the underground coal mines in the Southern Coalfields- of New South Wales, their design and operational aspects are constantly being reviewed and improved. One key area in such pursuits is the reliable design of stable and yielding pillars. The current designs of pillars based mostly on experience leads to unnecessary sterilisation of coal or strata control problems. To explore such mine design problems, computer based modelling is increasingly being applied. In the study described in this paper, the object was to determine the particular width of pillars separating three roadways in a panel at which the pillars yielded completely and their loads largely transferred to the unmined coal at the flanks of the panel. This was approached through a computer simulation of the behaviour of the strata around a panel, in which the three roadways were separated by pillars of progressively decreasing width. A computer program called FLAC based on the finite difference method was used to simulate the relevant strata behaviour in vertical sections. The appropriate in situ values of the deformability parameters relating to the coal seam, roof and floor were determined from the back analysis of some displacement measurements in such a panel. The process involved successive modelling of a vertical section through such a panel,starting with realistic values of the parameters and varying them until the measured and the modelled displacements agreed closely. Based on the results of the numerical modelling, the width of a yielding pillar for the given conditions is Suggested.

A mining joint venture presents a real management challenge to achieve harmony with the other participants in the successful development and operation of a mine. This can best be facilitated by a detailed agreement and guided by a set of joint venture principles which recognise the differences of the interests of the parties and seek to establish sound business and personal principles by which differences not anticipated in the agreement might be resolved. The major and minor co-venturers can and do present potential difficulties to one another. This paper, one of the pair in the joint venture panel discussion session, predominately presents the minor's viewpoint. Usually commercial matters such as project finance, areas of interest, divestment, pre-emptive rights and decision-making can be adequately covered in the agreement. However, when the parties disagree and have difficulty in resolving their differences, the joint venture principles should be used to advantage to resolve relationship difficulties.

Continuous improvement using six sigma methodologies commonly follows the DMAIC methodology of define, measure, analyse, improve and control. A key requirement in the use of this approach is to ensure that data is trusted, validated and contextual. In today’s production environments it is common to find disparate technology comprising the system architecture and highly customised interfaces between the various technology layers. This complexity often leads to inaccurate data presented at the operations management layer or worse, data that is not trusted. Identifying defects and making corrective actions cannot be efficiently carried out unless trusteddata can be easily obtained with a production context. It is also common to find that disparate systems of this nature present information in multiple ways and through multiple presentation systems. This paper discusses how the use of web-based technologies in an integrated technology stack can aid the accessibility, accuracy and trust of data used in decision-making and also how a unified visualisation environment can lead to greater operator efficiency.

The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) has recently commercialised a variety of new products for the mining industry through its commercial division (JKTech). Although the products cover a wide variety of niche applications, a common thread runs through the Research, Development and Commercialisation (RD and C) process: they have emerged from industry sponsored projects. The development history of JigScan (a control system for the mineral-processing jig) is a good example of how this RD and C process works in practice. It involves building mutually beneficial partnerships between the JKMRC and the mining industry through several incremental projects with one or more industry sponsors. All research projects have objectives to demonstrate but these projects also feature a degree of product development to actively encourage and support the longer-term vision for the mature commercial technology. The process to develop JigScan as a commercial product worked because each incremental project recovered costs, provided an immediate benefit for the sponsor and contributed to the longer-term development objectives of the JKMRC. Integrating development with research need not greatly increase the cost of research objectives generally provides a more robust research outcome for the sponsor and greatly reduces the overall development risk. Successful projects often feature industry mentors actively participating in the RD and C process. Additional funding from government appears to be easier to obtain when such close partnerships with industry are apparent. Finally, the business structure of the JKMRC within the University of Queensland ensures that commercial outcomes, developed within the contractual arrangements of the underlying RD and C projects, are used to benefit and support further RD and C with the mining industry. This paper tells the story of the development and commercialisation of JigScan, and draws conclusions about this kind of RD and C model.

Models of the genesis of existing ore oodles and targetting of exploration for new mines are greatly enhanced by an-understanding of the plate tectonic environment existing at the time of mineral emplacement. In areas of recent or active tectonism, a study of the present-day crustal and upper mantle structure is an obvious starting point in unravelling the evolution of the accessible upper crust. Bougainville is the northern-most island in the Solomon Islands arc. A 7km deep trench almost 100km off its western coast marks the commencement of subduction of the Solomon Sea plate beneath the Pacific plate. As outlined by the seismicity, the subducted crustal slab under the southern half of Bougainville reaches the axis of the island at about 100km depth, from which point it dips near vertically another 300km into the upper mantle. Large surface blasts at the Bougainville Copper Mine at Panguna, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea were used to derive an unreversed upper crustal profile of the island. The crust appears to be relatively simple, being comprised of a 5km deep layer with a P-wave velocity of 4.5km/sec, overlying a l0km thick layer with a P-wave velocity of 7.2km/sec. Constraints on the 15km mantle depth were provided by the identification of both P to and S to P phase conversions of seismic waves from local shallow earthquakes at the Moho boundary. An upper mantle velocity of 7.95(¦ 0.15) km/sec was measured from travel times of selected shallow earthquakes along the strike of the island arc.

The Permian rocks at Gympie were first studied as far back as 1868 in conjunction with the discovery of gold. The relationship of the Gympie Group to other sequences in the Gympie Composite Terrane is an important subject of investigations in a new mapping project of the Geological Survey Program of the Department of Resource Industries.In two areas the Gympie Group has been divided into four defined formations. They are the Highbury Volcanics (base), Ram mutt Formation, South Curra Limestone and Tamaree Formation (top) in the Gympie area, and the Mant basalt (base), Kolbar Formation, Gigoomgan Limestone and Teebar Formation (top) in the Gigoomgan area. Geochemical and lithological evidence from the basal volcanics of the Gympie Group (Highbury Volcanics, Mant basalt) indicate that they developed in an intraoceanic island arc setting. The overlying volcaniclastic sediments (Rammutt Formation, Kolbar Formation), which contain some continentally-derived material, are mainly of local derivation and shallow-water marine. A hiatus is present at the top of the Early Permian Rammutt Formation and Kolbar Formation. Following the hiatus, limestone sedimentation characteristic of a basin of restricted circulation developed in the Late Permian. There is some evidence of a hiatus between the limestone deposition of the Gigoomgan and South Curra Limestones and the overlying probable turbidite deposits of the Teebar and Tamaree Pnrmatinnc

Fission track thermochronology is a well established method for reconstructing the thermal histories of rocks with particularly important applications in tectonic studies, detecting low-grade thermal events, sedimentary basin analysis and resource exploration. These applications take advantage of the limited stability of fission tracks, especially in apatite, when exposed to the temperatures found in the upper 3-4 km of the crust. Apparent fission track ages in apatites can define an invisible 'stratigraphy' in otherwise homogeneous rock masses that can give valuable information on thermal, tectonic and erosional events. Quantitative modelling of the thermal annealing of tracks in apatite shows that distinctive profiles of apparent fission track age can be related to a number of simple thermal history styles. The main types of profile observed tend to be either an essentially linear decrease of apparent age with increasing depth, which relates to continuous uplift and denudation, or a concave-upwards profile produced by partial annealing in environments of tectonic stability or burial. More complex thermal histories produce compound profiles which are essentially just combinations of these two elements. Track length information allows the apparent age profiles to be interpreted in much greater detail. Examples of the major profile types have now been identified in various geological environments and can be analysed to give information about, for example, uplift and denudation rates, the timing of uplift or low-grade thermal events and maximum palaeotemperatures experienced during burial.

This extended abstract and associated presentation provide a series of real examples of the complex interactions between the numerous input parameters, both geological and mathematical, that are required for resource estimation. Many of these parameters can contain a large degree of uncertainty at the initial resource stage. The resource tonnages and grades at economic cut offs of some types of deposits are relatively robust to these initial uncertainties while others exhibit significant sensitivity. In some cases, changes in parameters can result in counter-intuitive outcomes. Grades and confidence levels are inseparable; as the parameters change the confidence changes and so does the grade estimate. The extended abstract and associated presentation also discuss the question of whether or not a single solution is still an acceptable outcome for an estimate or if even a set of simulations based on a single fixed set of parameters is acceptable.CITATION: Kentwell, D, 2018. Conflicting claims and views on the priming of ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) are reviewed; certain fallacies and misconceptions are rectified. Optimum priming systems for a range of blasthole conditions are indicated. Moves towards optimum priming lead to reductions in the combined cost of drilling, blasting and handling the material. With shallow blastholes, two-point priming is rarely warranted. Best blasting results from single priming are usually obtained when the primer is located near, but not at, the bottom of the blasthole. As blast- hole depth increases, two-point priming becomes more reliable and effective than single priming. For two-point priming, primers should be located such that detonation waves in the ANFO collide at grade level or, if preferred, within a hard band in the burden. Where blastholes are very deep and/or strata variations can be appreciable, three or more spaced primers are often justified. The effectiveness of a primer varies with its detonation pressure, diameter and length. Primer properties influence the velocity of detonation (VOD) near the primer, but do not affect the final (steady-state) VOD in the ANFO. This paper will describe the exploration project which led to the discovery of the La Escondida porphyry copper deposit in northern Chile and will serve as companion paper to the description of the geology of Escondida being presented by J M Ojeda. The author would like to express his appreciation to Robert Hickman, Chairman of Minera Escondida, for permission to present this paper.In July 1978, a proposal was made by J D Lowell to Robert Wheaton, then Exploration Manager of Utah International, that Utah fund a "grass roots" program exploring for porphyry copper deposits in northern Chile. Wheaton expressed interest, and it was agreed that Getty Oil Co also be invited to participate. A joint venture agreement for the Atacama Exploration Project was signed January 1, 1979, between Utah, Getty and Lowell. The project was managed by Lowell who reported to a management committee which through most of the project consisted of Lowell, Francisco Ortiz, Robert Wheaton, Maurice Young, Sigfried Muessig and Louis Rove. Oliver Warin and Jim Bratt participated in the committee in the last phase of the contract. Special thanks are due Louis Rove of Getty and Maurice Young of Utah who made contributions throughout the course of the project. Francisco Ortiz was resident manager through most of the project.

The Hikurangi Margin of eastern North Island New Zealand represents the feather edge of the over-riding Indo-Australian Plate at its convergent boundary with the subducting Pacific Plate. Towards the south, convergence becomes slower and increasingly oblique, and sediment supply from the Southern Alps becomes increasingly rapid. In this environment a 150 km wide, imbricate thrust, accretionary prism has grown since the Miocene, uplifting slope ridges and basins and a range of coastal hills. Offscraping of thick, axially transported, trench-fill turbidites begins in a zone of proto- thrusts, which extends up to 25 km beyond the principle, slope-toe, deformation front. On the slope, landward tilted, trench-slope basins are separated by ridges. The ridges ride up on thrusts that sole out at a major decollement. The decollement dips landwards at 3 degrees to a depth of 14 km at the coast, where it coincides with an onshore zone of high seismicity. Beneath the decollement, about 1 km of consolidated, oceanic sediment is going under the margin with the underlying oceanic basement. Some of these sediments may underplate the frontal ranges to the west and geochemical evidence of subducted sediment is found in the volcanic zone beyond. A rapid decrease in the width of the accretionary prism to the north is associated with a decrease in sediment supply and perhaps with a dislocation in the downgoing plate. To the south, the accretionary prism narrows, swings westward, and merges into the zone of very oblique collision that marks the transform between mirror image subduction to north and south of New Zealand.

Oroya Mining LimitedÆs Mt Gibson Gold Project, 280 km north east of Perth, is one of Western AustraliaÆs more recent discoveries of a major gold resource. Modern gold mining commenced in 1986, on a shallow laterite reserve of 6.62 million tonnes averaging 1.50 g/t gold. By the end of 1998, mining had progressed from an initial three shallow laterite pits to a series of 14 open pits with maximum depth of 100 m, on three separate trends with a combined strike length of over 10 km. The Project has yielded 868 400 ounces of gold from 16.5 million tonnes of ore at an average recovered grade of 1.64 g/t gold, from near surface laterite, supergene and primary sulfide ores. This includes a 160 m deep underground decline operation which mined 120 000 tonnes at an average grade of 9.1 g/t gold and a four million tonne Dump Leach on a synthetic base which yielded 68 900 ounces. The Project was placed on Care and Maintenance in 1999 pending drilling to refresh reserves. Hosted by strongly tectonised and altered Archaean volcanic rocks within and adjacent to a major regional shear, primary gold mineralisation occurs as structurally emplaced sulfide and quartz lodes. On the main Gibson Trend, multiple zones of mineralisation occur within a zone up to 600 m in overall width. The overall footprint of known mineralisation exceeds 20 km2 and the potentially mineralised domain exceeds 100 km2. The current estimate of a combined resource of 9.4 million tonnes averaging 2.47 g/t gold (749 500 ounces) is derived from a database of 10 500 drill holes, of which only four per cent test below 100 m vertical depth. Ore envelopes which remain open at depth and major gaps in the drilling pattern beyond the currently defined resources promise straightforward potential to define additional resources. Oroya Mining Limited and its joint venture partner Barrick Australia are targeting a major gold mining operation from this potentially world-class mineralised system. Oroya has the exclusive right to produce up to 500 000 ounces and is working toward the completion of a feasibility study into a resumption of mining using the existing 1986-built 1 Mtpa processing plant. The joint venture is in the early stages of testing the depth and lateral potential of the Mt Gibson mineralised system. Mining options currently under review include progressive open pit extension and amalgamation leading to one or more large open pits, and underground operations. It is too early in the development of the Project to offer definitive economic models of potential large-scale mining operations.

Whilst communications systems in the mining industry have evolved over the years, the premise remains consistent that reliable communication is vital for safety and operational efficiency. TodayÆs open pit mines are benefiting from advanced developmental efforts based on mesh networking hardware and software technology. This paper highlights Rajant CorporationÆs adaptation of technology, originally developed for the defence and first responder industries, to provide wireless network connectivity in open pit mining applications. Featured is the large-scale deployment of over 300 mobile, meshing access points in the Bingham Canyon Copper mine near Salt Lake City, Utah, the worldÆs largest open pit copper mine. Many companies have positioned themselves, their technology and their product line in the arena of rugged outdoor wireless broadband mesh networking infrastructure. However, Rajant Corporation has combined specialised command and control software and portable networks which offer network extensibility and redundancy that are not available in any other networking solution. Rajant CorporationÆs BreadCrumb« offers unique traits in portability and non-line-of-site networking nodes which intelligently route and broadcast in standard 802.11 protocol. The advantage of RajantÆs solution is especially valuable for users needing equipment moved easily and rapidly into and out of the theatre of operations with uninterrupted network availability. The main differentiators that set the BreadCrumb« network apart from the competitors are mobility (continuous availability), simplicity, ability to properly load balance and power options. Many of the devices that require wireless communications are moving at all times throughout the wireless mining infrastructure. The BreadCrumb« nodes rapidly adapt to any changes in the network topology, assuring that IP traffic uptime and bandwidth are maximised. Pumped co-disposal of coal processing waste was promoted in the 1990-2000s as a low-cost highperformance alternative to tailings dams. In particular it would avoid high up-front capital for rejects trucks and dam embankments, and would produce a combined waste deposit with better geotechnical properties than either coarse rejects or tailings. Overall, the promise was not delivered; in particular, upon discharge the waste segregated by size, and operators responded by moving the coarser waste to contain the finer waste. In consequence, not only did design analysis lag behind construction, but some of the initial expectations persisted with the result that analyses did not fully represent what was occurring on the ground. After more than twenty years inspecting, designing and tending Co-Disposal Areas (CDAs), it is apparent that they are essentially upstream constructed tailings dams with some more favourable aspects but also a few unique quirks. Although waste management technology has moved on somewhat, the high cost of changing CHPP waste circuits means that most mines with pumped codisposal will continue to discharge mixed waste slurry into CDAs. It is therefore worthwhile to share some lessons in the hope of promoting sounder design, operation and rehabilitation. These include: • Discharged waste does not form a homogeneous wholly competent deposit but instead comprises materials ranging from sandy gravel to silty clay with the distribution determined by movement of the discharge and decant structures; • CDAs circulate and contain a lot of water; • As a result of the first two points, some areas of the CDA comprise saturated fine waste that is no different from tailings and, like tailings, often behaves in an undrained manner; • Seepage is inevitable and desirable because strength improves as water is removed. However, stability is strongly impacted by pore pressures and in design these need to be rationally rather than optimistically considered; • As CDAs are built to about 40m or higher, strength-deformation characteristics of the foundation become more important; • Even if geomechanically stable, CDAs will need covers to prevent salts and acids from reaching the surface; and • Erosional stability of the cover material(s) will probably dictate maximum slopes for rehabilitation.

At Port Latta in Tasmania, Savage River Mines operates vertical shaft furnaces for the firing of pelletised magnetite concentrates. At times the temperature profile of the furnace has changed markedly, necessitating the- burning of greater quantities of fuel to maintain good pellet quality. A study of the oxidati=of magnetite concentrates was under- taken because this exothermic process supplies much of the heat required to indurate the pellets. Using the thermal analyses methods, different magnetite concentrates from Australian and overseas were heated in air under identical conditions, to compare rates of oxygen uptake and of heat release. In addition, a compari- son was made of the oxidation behaviour of different particle size fractions of a selected concentrate. Particle size analyses, x-ray diffraction and dilatometer tests were used to aid inter pretation of the thermal analysis traces. The investigation emphasized the importance of particle size and ferrous iron content in determining' oxidation rates from the commencement of heating.

Isa and Townsville. The climate is semiarid, and operations are conducted throughout the year without difficulty.WATER SUPPLYThe mill make-up water is obtained from the mine, and also from Rifle Creek reservoir, which is situated 20 miles from Mount Isa. The domestic supply of water is obtained from a series of bores on the company's leases.POWER SUPPLYElectric power at 3300 volts, 3-phase, 50 cycles, is supplied from the company's steam power plant, consisting of two units, each unit comprising one Babcock & Wilcox boiler, supplying steam at 300 lb. pressure per sq: in. to one 5000 kW. turbo-alternator. Pulverized coal is used as fuel, and power is being generated at a cost of 0.45d. per kilowatt hour. The coal used is supplied from the State Coal Mine, Bowen, costing 42/- per ton delivered at Mt. Isa.

Western Australian tin deposits are similar to those of other Precam- brian terrains in that they are mainly associated with rare-metal pegmatites, in which cassiterite is found with minerals containing any or all of the elements Ta, Nb, Be, Li, Cs, Rb and the rare earths.. They differ from Phanerozoic deposits where cassiterite occurs in quartz veins, greisens, dis- seminations in granite or sulphide lodes, and is associated with minerals containing W, Mo, Bi, Sb, As, Ag, or Cu. The main tin production in Western Australia has come from the Pilbara Block where the more important tin- bearing pegmatites are related to a younger granite phase, and from Green- bushes where large albite pegmatites intrude ?Proterozoic metamorphic rocks. The more important tin deposits in the Pilbara Block, and those in the Halls Creek and Murchison Provinces, are related to granites which are richer in Si and K and poorer in Ca, Mg, Fe and Ti than 'average granite'. The tin granites tend to have higher than average contents of Sn, Rb and Li.

Looking back 25 years, the role of the drill and blast engineer in an Australian mine seemed relatively simple, with the primary focal points being scheduling of the drill rigs, oversize control, and budget control with respect to consumption of both explosives and drill consumables. The choice of explosive selection was relatively simple, though many mines were becoming involved in trials of slurry explosives, emulsion blends, and low density ANFO blends. Guidelines to assist the engineer towards specific fragmentation targets were scarce, environmental constraints were light, and computers were rarely found on the desks of any mining engineers. Wall control blasting was in its infancy, with the bulk of attention being given to appropriate slope design and little real attention given to factors such as explosive distribution, and optimum delay timing and sequencing. Quantitative measurement of blasting performance was rare. The science of blasting, for fragmentation control, wall control, and environmental impact control was about to be born, and was heralded in those years by intense efforts by the explosive manufacturers and a proliferation of research centres throughout the world. Since the early 1980s, the role of the Australian drill and blast engineer has gone through a major metamorphosis, and currently requires a greater depth of scientific understanding than any other specialisation within mining engineering.
