Professor Skeats, of the Melbourne University, gave much valued assistance in petrology, and Mr. Herbert Lavers kindly undertook the study of the garnets.INTRODUCTIONThe famous Broken Hill lode is situated in a low range of hills, the Barrier Ranges, near the western border of New South Wales. It has been worked since 1884-first for, silver, then for silver and lead, and at present for lead, silver, and zinc. No excuse seems necessary for placing before members even an imperfect report on the geological features of this notable ore deposit, since so little work has been done on the subject as to constitute almost a national reproach. This is the more deplorablesince the evidence laid open by mining operations is destroyed almost as soon as it is exposed, and there exists the real need of a continuous and connected record of geologieal developments.

The St George orebodies are situated within the tectonically disrupted eastern limb of the Boogardie Syncline.Highly disturbed rafts of banded chert formations occur within a sequence of felsic volcanic tuffs. The chert forms the hostrock for the gold mineralization.The gold distribution within the irregular and narrow banded chert formations is erratic and patchy. The average gold content of the two orebodies is between 3 - 4 g/t Au.Economic mining of these relative small, irregular and low grade St. George orebodies can be carried out by using a highly selective mining method.The highly selective mining method uses an excavator as the principle mining tool. Blasting, breaking and loading of the rocks is done in a different way than by using a front-end loader as with the conventional mining method. Simple, and therefore cheaper, blasting breaks the rocks and lifts them up without major displacements.

The main features and recent developments in the processes of benefication and extractive treatments of tin ores are reviewed. The need for development of processes to recover fine tin, tin from low-grade complex ores and from hard rock resources is indicated. The progress in understanding of slag-metal interactions and developments of fuming processes on industrial scale is delineated. the processes and prospects of hydrometallurgical and chlorination methods are briefly indicated.

In the current climate, there is a real need to bridge the gap between theory and the real world mining considerations, and develop viable, cost-effective, high performance thickeners. With a greater need to extract profits from both difficult-to-process ores and lower grade orebodies, coupled with the necessity to produce 'greener', less water intensive technologies, suppliers need to take current thickener designs to the next level and into the 21st century. The complexity of 'getting it right' within a thickenerÆs feedwell, the 'nerve centre' of the thickener, is no small task. Delivering dilution water and mixing this water with incoming feed slurry, addition of flocculant, maximising flocculant-slurry interaction to build aggregate size, minimising unabsorbed flocculant percentage, volume average of solids volume fraction, momentum dissipation ratio, dilution recycle ratio, volume average shear, maximum shear rate at exit, aggregate size on exit, uniform discharge profile and more ù all of these need to occur in the right order and in the right proportions within the feedwell. This paper discusses the genesis and evolution of a new feedwell design, the first major innovation in the thickening industry in over 15 years.

The concept of precise, accurate timing with Electronic Delay Detonators (EDDs) was first seriously addressed in the mid-1980s and much was made of the cheapness and profusion of digital watches in terms of the likelihood of EDDs also being cheap and easy to produce. Ten years later, with every major explosives company and many electronics groups having instituted projects to capitalise on the promise of these devices, production devices are still to come into general use. In South Africa, Expert Explosives units have been used in most applications during proving trials and more recently for production blasting in underground ring stoping and open cast coal. The outcome has been valuable learning both as to the benefits and technical requirements for electronic delay blasting, and especially, safety aspects. Examples are shown of production blasts which utilised the power of EDDs. It is evident that it is not delay accuracy alone which determines the value of these systems, but the whole robustness, flexibility and ease of delay allocation when harnessing blast engineering knowledge. Muckpile movement and shape, fragmentation and vibration frequencies have shown to be greatly influenced by designs which can be implemented no other way. The flexibility of a system and the power of the software controlling it are crucial in capitalising on blasting potential, which lies in integrating control of blast timing with other developing electronic Technologies.

The mining industry is currently focusing to develop and adopt sustainable collector chemistry that can efficiently recover valuable minerals from their natural state. However, a limited number of research can be seen on the design and synthesis of polymeric flotation collectors. The focal objective of this research is to synthesise a more effective polymeric collector with advanced architecture to utilise in the mineral processing industry. Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) co-polymers with cardanol derivatives have the potential to selectively trap valuable metals in the flotation process in a more efficient way. Cardanol exhibits amenability to chemical modification for making tailor-made monomers that can further produce polymers with high value. The synthesis of a series of fit for purpose copolymers in this study was accomplished by RAFT polymerisation. The ability to design complex architecture is a significant advantage in engineering polymeric collectors by RAFT polymerisation. Initially, commercially available cardanol was converted to a cardanol based monomer and copolymerised with commercially available monomers to synthesise a series of novel cardanol based copolymers with predetermined molecular weights. The side groups of the copolymer were chemically modified to incorporate functionality that can be selectively adsorbed on the chalcopyrite surface.

GENTLEMEN, I have to thank you very much for the honour you have conferred upon me by electing me President of the Institute for this year. On behalf of resident members, I have to offer the visitors a very cordial welcome to Mount Morgan, and to tell them that all arrangements have been made to enable them to inspect the mine and works at their own convenience, and to supply them with any particulars they may need.It is very pleasing indeed to see such a large gathering, especially on account of the long journeys many have undertaken in order to be present. The first congress in Queensland, about eleven years ago, was attended by a comparatively small number of members, and a rather long time has been allowed to pass in consequence. The large attendance at this meeting encourages the holding of meetings in Queensland more frequently. Owing to the long distances, and the number of mining centres in Australia and New Zealand, we cannot expect to meet oftener than once in six or seven years in...

The DeGrussa copper deposit was discovered by Sandfire Resources in April 2009. Construction of the 1.6 Mt/a concentrator, open pit and underground mining operations commenced in March 2011 with first concentrate production achieved in October 2012. Over the next ten years, DeGrussa grew to include both the DeGrussa and Monty underground mines, establishing itself as one of the world’s premier copper producers with total production of 663 000 t of contained copper by the time the mine closed. Final ore was trucked from Degrussa on 5 October 2022. This paper examines the mine closure experience from both a planning and operational perspective. The paper provides an overview of the site’s mine planning process including the factors involved in determining the end of the mine life and how this was tracked and communicated in the lead up to the end of mining operations. It will also look at some of the specific operational aspects involved in maintaining steady state production all the way through to the last day while facing increasingly challenging conditions. These factors, along with the external factors faced by most of the industry such as labour shortages and COVID related disruptions, contributed to making it an interesting journey to the end of operations at DeGrussa.

Semi-arid regions suffer from two afflictions; evaporation may exceed precipitation by multiples of two or more and variations in precipitation can be both extreme and difficult to predict. Many Australian mines are situated in semi-arid areas where communities are reliant upon locally sourced water or special purpose infrastructure is built as part of the mine construction. As the question of climate change looms, issues related to future water supply and sustainable water management become increasingly important. Across Australia several mining operations co-exist in a single surface water and/or groundwater catchment area. The management of water on a mine by mine or a community by community basis is illogical and must be reconsidered based on a single water catchment and a whole-of-community basis. Mine water should be considered on a full life cycle basis where the quality is assessed for specific mine site applications. This paper addresses technical challenges that include surface water and groundwater supply in semi-arid regions, operational water in the mining industry, beneficial uses of water, water economics and demand management. In much the same way as emissions trading evolved into a multi-stakeholder forum, mining regions offer scope for innovative thinking in water supply and reuse. In addition, this paper considers a number of initiatives taken by Australian mining companies that are entering a prefeasibility stage and contrasts these initiatives against the established success within a South African mining region. The challenges and potential solutions to this initiative are presented for future consideration.

Process engineering principles are used to analyse the features of leaching processes for large masses of low grade, unprocessed ore. Different performance characteristics are related to the numerous variants of these processes. The variant for which reagent enters a heap only via the input solution is further subdivided into three modes of operation. The three modes may occur in testwork and full-scale operations; the effects of process variables on the rate of the process are completely different in each mode. The mode can be identified by the time at which reagent first appears in the pregnant solution. It is related to the ratio of the height of the heap and the thickness of a band of ore in which the reactions are localised. Synthesis of the phenomena occurring within a heap via a computer program has produced a quantitative relation for the reaction band thickness. The program has been validated for several different systems. The overall achievement is that the mode of operation and the rate of the process can be forecast before column testwork is commenced. Some applications of the outcomes to testwork, process design and operational tactics are described.

The fire started in the development section from methane released into the mine through a roof-bolt hole. The date was 8 May 1998. The flames spread quickly as the coal was ignited. After eight hours the Safety Department decided to seal the vertical ventilation shafts and the slopes. The quality of coal in the Esmeralda Mine is very high quality, and Minerales Monclova (MIMOSA) decided to recover the facilities, however, the Esmeralda Mine coals have a very high gas content of 12 m3/t. Immediately after the mine was sealed, MIMOSA staff implemented a plan to monitor the gas levels underground and contacted specialists for assistance in bringing the mine back on-line. During the next 2.5 months, MIMOSA staff and the specialists observed and analysed the gas behaviour supported by a chromatograph. With the results of the observations and analyses, MIMOSA in consultation with the specialists developed a recovery plan based on flooding the area in which fire might have propagated and in which rekindling was highly probable. Those results were analysed by the command centre (Mexican engineers responsible for mine recovery). At the same time MIMOSA trained rescue teams which included miners who had no previous experience in mine recovery operations. By 20 August 1998, the mine command centre had re-opened the slopes seal. Using a æStep-by-StepÆ system, the rescue team began the recovery process by employing cross-cuts and using an auxiliary fan to establish the ventilation circuit. The MIMOSA team advanced into the mine as far as allowed by the water level and was able to recover the main fan. The official mine recovery date was 30 November 1998.

South Australia was founded as late as 1836, forty- eight years after New South Wales, yet within five years had announced the first discovery of metals in Australia. Throughout the 1840s the mining of silver-lead, then copper, spread north through the Mount Lofty and Flinders Ranges creating a thriving industry, years before the discovery of gold in the eastern colonies in 1851. The first significant mine was Kapunda (1842), followed by the much bigger Burra (1845) and other copper finds at Tungkillo, Worthing, Cal- lington, and North Rhine.

The Pasminco Century Mine (PCML) is located 250 kilometres north-north-west of Mt Isa in Queensland. As one of the worldÆs largest zinc mines, PCML comprises mining and milling operations at Lawn Hill, concentrate filtering and shipping facilities at Karumba in the Gulf of Carpentaria, and a 304 km slurry pipeline connecting the two operations.Mineralisation at Century occurs in the upper part of the Lawn Hill formation and is comprised of siltstones, shale and sandstone. Pyrite occurs immediately above the mineralised sequence, and throughout the footwall carbonaceous shale forming the lower proportion of the deposit. Zinc predominantly occurs as sphalerite (ZnS) and lead as galena (PbS). These sulfides are very fine-grained and may oxidise rapidly upon exposure. The pyrite, sphalerite and galena are the main potential sources of acid rock drainage (ARD) or heavy metal leachate at the mine site.To minimise the generation of ARD in the waste rock dumps, they are constructed in a specific manner and waste rock is classified into the following three classes based on competence and acid forming/consuming capabilities:Class 1: Competent rock, non-acid forming or acid-consuming material. Class 2: Non-competent, non-acid forming or acid-consuming material. Class 3: Acid-forming material. The generalised Waste Rock Dump Design for current operations comprises an outer zone of Class 1 material and inner zone with Class 2 and 3 material. Limestone is the Class 1 material used for both its structural support and acid neutralising capacity. Reserves of limestone at the mine site are limited. Net acid generation (NAG) tests confirm that a mix of limestone and shales can be net acid consuming.Field based and laboratory based trials have been established at PCML to quantify blending levels of limestone and shale that will produce leachates both neutral in pH and low in metal/salt concentrations. This paper will discuss the first six months results (of a two-year sampling program) from the trials.

Compositional and isotopic analyses of coal seam gases in the Southern Coalfields have shown that these gases frequently contain abnormally high concentrations of magmatically derived carbon dioxide. The size of this carbon dioxide reservoir and the extent of permeation of the sediments by carbon dioxide are not known.Therefore caution in evaluating the natural gas potential of the region is advised.

During the 1990s, wider and more productive longwall panels were being introduced into the Newcastle Coalfield. The strata of the Newcastle Coalfield incorporate numerous massive sandstones and conglomerates, some of which formed the immediate roof of the coal seams being mined. The unexpected implications of introducing wider panels into this geological environment included more variable and increased subsidence, severe periodic weighting (with associated mid-face falls) as well as windblast.Subsidence prediction at the time was based on empirically derived data essentially relating subsidence to the width/depth ratio of the panel without accounting for actual widths, nor the impacts of variable geology. This approach required modification as locally derived data was gathered and reinterpreted.The interaction of massive strata located close to the roof of the mined seam resulted in dramatic implications for some of the operations. When associated with longwall goaf geomechanics severe periodic weighting events and crippling mid-face roof falls were the consequence. When associated with narrower panels and shortwall goaf geomechanics, mines in the region experienced aggressive windblast events. The relationships between the overlying massive strata, longwall panel geometry and the various risks encountered during this period is in the author’s opinion, the most concise still documented.As the extensive coalfields of Queensland turn to underground mining operations the relevance of these experiences cannot be underestimated. This paper will discuss recent developments as well as incorporating diverse subjects such as microseismic monitoring, low frequency radio emissions and ‘electrophonics’ as they relate also to the topic.Like Moriarty, massive strata can be disguised and can offend when you least expect. This paper documents a trail of crimes committed by conglomerate in the Newcastle Coalfield that were inflicted on the general public, miners and mining equipment. Although this paper concentrates on the criminal behaviour of conglomerate, this story is also relevant to other massive units such as coarse sandstones that may be more difficult to identify and apprehend. Currently Moriarty remains at large and able to reoffend at any time, once again taking advantage of the unwary.CITATION:Creech, M, 2014. The application of high-resolution seismic reflection to map structure and/or mineralisation in hard rock environments has progressed significantly in the last decade. Improvements in equipment, field practice, processing and understanding has seen the seismic reflection technique emerge as a cost-effective tool for high-resolution three-dimensional structural and lithology mapping to depths far greater and with superior accuracy than other more conventional geophysical techniques.This paper outlines results and preliminary interpretation of 2D and 3D seismic reflection surveys aimed at defining fault zones and locations for quartz load development in favourable host lithologies at the Cracow low-sulfidation epithermal gold system in Queensland, Australia.As this is possibly the first time that high-resolution seismic reflection data has been used to define the structurally-controlled location of low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation, an important aspect of this work was the derisking or due diligence steps taken prior to commissioning the full 3D surveys at each site. This included full wave sonic logging, vertical seismic profiling and trial 2D lines. Interpretation of the 2D profiles and the drilling of interpreted structure provided the confidence to proceed with the full 3D survey.The advantage of collecting 3D data extends beyond ensuring that the received reflections are located correctly in 3D space. The final 3D data cube can potentially map the entire fault network, thus highlighting flexures and changes in orientation of the structures both vertically and along strike, which is an important aspect in the deposition of gold and for direct targeting.CITATION:Smith, R, Cook, J, Pike, S and Pridmore, D, 2015. fhis paper describes investigations into drainage of gas from the solid to control outbursts. Initial studies conducted on drainage of shear zones showed that, given enough time, these can be successfully drained. Once drained, they can be intersected and driven through without any activity of outbursts. The results of programme of investigations to determine parameters for drainage from the solid show that gas flow rates from the Bulli Seam on the average are about 2 litres/min/metre length of borehole. But when shear zones are intersected, the flow rates could be as high as 8 litres/min/ metre length of hole. Shear zones can be picked up from pressure measurements 50 - 60 m away and this could give sufficient time to drill through these zones and drain them in advance. Systematic drainage of Bulli Seam at West Cliff Colliery could eliminate or reduce frequency of outbursts considerably. At present drainage holes are being drilled systematically in the seam, with drainage installations on the surface. Gas purity of 80% methane is being delivered at the surface plant.

Nauru Phosphate, which is one of the world's highest grade deposits discovered to date, contributed in 1969, 2.2 million tons of the total world production of 77.7 million tons. Phosphate production, which is the major source of revenue for the island nation, is carried out by the Nauru Phosphate Corporation, headed by a Government appointed Board of Directors. The complete mining operation, including ship loading techniques, is discussed along with proposals at present being investigated to upgrade the Quality of the product.

Underground rock mechanics was initiated as a formal discipline in Australia by early studies for underground structures for the Snowy Mountains Scheme in the 1950s. These techniques were quickly embraced by underground mining and there has been steady development to the present time. The paper reviews the status of current techniques for rock mechanics studies and discusses some important issues such as ground support, mine filling and caving. It concludes that a considerable degree of engineering judgement is still required for the practical application of rock mechanics to underground mine design.
