The lowering of the pollutant concentration limits at the workplace subjects the mining industry to higher requirements for dilution; this situation is worsened with the current discussions within the European Union (EU) to set new stricter exposure limits for nitrogen oxides in the workplace. This is directly reflected in the performance of the mine ventilation system, which may need to be revised to meet the new standards. The after blast re-entry time, being inversely proportional to the threshold limits, will be higher for a lower limit. This in turn increases the down time for production from the blasted area.Numerical tools have been very useful in predicting the effectiveness of ventilation. This study aims at analysing the dilution time for NOx gases from an ANFO blast in a room and pillar panel. The coal seam gas (CSG) industry is expanding rapidly in the Surat and Bowen basins. CSG production involves pumping water from the coal seams to release the gas adsorbed to coal particles. The reduction in water pressure in the coal seams will cause some reductions in water pressure in overlying and underlying aquifers because there will always be some interconnectivity between the formations. The Surat Basin is a sub-basin of the Great Artesian Basin, which contains aquifers of high economic, environmental and cultural value. The Condamine Alluvium is also an important water resource, which overlies parts of the eastern margin of the Surat Basin.Under the Queensland (Qld) regulatory framework, an area of intensive CSG development involving multiple CSG operators can be declared to be a cumulative management area. For such areas the Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment develops assessments of future impacts on aquifer water pressures and develops and manages arrangements. The results are published in underground water impact reports.The Surat underground water impact report (QWC, 2012) was approved in December 2012. This work presents an experimental study of flow dynamics in a bubble column system (crosssection: 100 mm × 100 mm) using a non-intrusive optical technique with targeted application in a novel REFLUX™ Flotation Cell. The study had two aims – measurement of the bubble size distribution (BSD) and local energy dissipation rate in the system due to bubble motions over a low range of gas flux varied from 0.02 to 0.08 cm/s without impairing the visibility of the system. A central bubble plume was generated by injecting compressed air through a sintered glass distributor in quiescent liquid. Highspeed shadowgraphy imaging was performed to determine the BSD in the presence of surfactant (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) concentration ~ 10 ppm). The BSD exhibited a unimodal shape at different locations of the column for all gas flux cases. A non-intrusive particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to quantify the flow field generated by the bubble motions, which was used to estimate the local energy dissipation rate. The local energy dissipation rate exhibited an increasing power-law dependency on the gas flux.

The automated geology interpretation (AGI) tool has been developed in BHP Billiton to automate stratigraphy logging of drill holes, using any available quantitative data sets. At present, AGI is set-up to utilise geochemistry and mineralogy from infrared spectroscopic data to predict stratigraphy. Once the AGI tool is calibrated, results show that the tool is capable of automatically defining stratigraphy across all of the deposit types, encountered by BHP Billiton Iron Ore in the north-west of Western Australia. Accuracy of AGI at predicting stratigraphy is on average better than 75 per cent, with average accuracies exceeding 85 per cent for some deposit types. The AGI tool can deliver fast, accurate, consistent and objective geological interpretations.AGI is currently being implemented in BHP Billiton Iron Ore Exploration to streamline the drill hole logging process and allow geologists to spend less time defining stratigraphy at the drill hole level and more time investigating stratigraphy in 3D. This will deliver improved geology models, with significant downstream benefits in terms of better resource models, more accurate mine plans, higher plant efficiencies and more consistent ore products, driving productivity in BHP Billiton Iron Ore over the next decade.CITATION:Mittrup, D, Flitti, F, Hird, G, Haest, M and Dominguez, O, 2015. A cylinder-cyclone system, fitted with a flow control valve between the cylinder and cyclone plus in some tests a variable cyclone spigot, has been used to achieve classifier separations at unusually coarse sizes relative to the diameter of the units used. The method has proved to be useful for low tonnage flows at low pulp density and variable feed rate. The system relies on use of a cylinder unit to reject excess water and fine particles, the amount rejected being adjusted by the flow control valve. The valve also adjusts flow rate and pulp density of feed to the cyclone unit, and can be adjusted to give a separation at a coarse particle size. The system has been used in connection with experiments on the pilot plant at Mount Isa, where a 76 mm system was used to classify feed to the lead secondary rougher circuit at sizes as coarse as 52 micrametres galena equivalent for split conditioning tests. Further tests have been carried out with quartz to assess the range of size separations Possible.

Good roads are essential in moving men and materials to and from the underground workplace. Coffey Partners International Pty Ltd (Coffey) has recently completed a underground coal industry funded project on underground mine road construction and maintenance. This paper discusses practical approaches to construction and maintenance of underground mine roads using transferrable civil technologies and innovative techniques. Mine pavements are generally low-cost (relative to civil roads), constructed to varying standards using locally available materials to best meet the mobility needs of the mine. Performance of pavements is thus largely dependent on the environmental conditions, quality of the available road making materials, maintenance policies and available resources. The paper will detail `what causes bad roads?' in various underground environments, available management strategies, construction and water control techniques, road maintenance and vehicle considerations.

Century is a shale hosted zinc, lead, silver deposit developed within gently folded, Proterozoic Lawn Hill Formation shales and siltstones, approximately 250 kilometres north-northwest of Mount Isa, comprising 118 million tonnes of stratiform mineralisation, averaging 10.2 per cent ,,inc, 1.5 per cent lead and 36 grams per tonne silver. The deposit is largely overlain by Cambrian limestone and younger Proterozoic sedimentary rocks, outcropping at only two places. Small discordant lode lead-silver deposits formed the basis of relatively small scale mining activity in the area for almost 100 years, exploration tenement covering the deposit being granted to CRAE exactly 100 years after the first mining leases were pegged in the area in 1887.Stratiform mineralisation occurs within three distinct blocks, bounded by normal faults and the unconformity between Lawn Hill Formation and overlying Cambrian limestones. The Termite Range Fault, a major northwest trending, regional scale fault system occurs adjacent to the northeast deposit boundary, while the Magazine Hill Fault, possibly a component of the east trending Little Range Fault system, forms the southern boundary of the deposit.

Polycrystalline and surface complexes (at synthetic sphalerite, ZnS, and galena, PbS) of zinc(II) and lead(II) ions with eight different O,OÆ-dialkyldithiophosphate (Dtph) substances have been prepared and comparatively studied by means of 31P CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. The 31P resonances have been assigned to dithiophosphate groups with terminal S,SÆ-chelating or bridging coordinations in the mono-, bi-, tetra- and polynuclear complexes respectively. The bridging coordination of two neighbouring zinc(II) ions by O,OÆ-dialkyldithio-phosphate ligands was established at the surface of synthetic sphalerite.The adsorption mechanism of dialkyldithiophosphate on synthetic galena includes formation of a surface complex as well as surface precipitation. Principally different coordination modes of the reagent were discovered at the surfaces of galena and sphalerite (ie terminal S,SÆ-chelating coordination to the lead atom).Derivatives of monothiophosphoric and phosphoric acids were displayed as hydrolysis products of dialkyldithiophosphates at synthetic PbS.

For an exploration area with a predetermined grid of data points, a construction is given for elementary blocks which subdivide the entire area without omission or overlap, and with the property that each data point is situated at the centre of its corresponding block. The construction has a useful optimal property, and more importantly avoids an error which has been made recently in more than one publication.

"The Caijiaying lead zinc mine is located in China, north-west of Beijing, in Hebei Province. The region experiences severe winters, below -35°C, and warm summers, up to 30°C. The mine and concentrator commenced operations in the second half of 2005 with a conventional tailings disposal system consisting of a tailings dam with peripheral ring main discharge and central water recovery. A second similar dam sharing one common wall was added later. In view of the extreme winter conditions tailings lines and ring mains plus spigots, together with return water lines, require insulation and electrical trace heating. The volume of process water trapped as ice in the tailings dam ponds each winter is significant. This seasonal variation presents a major difficulty in the management of process water availability. Although Caijiaying is an underground mine there was no backfill plant at the start of operations. As plant throughput increased more quickly than originally anticipated, tailings storage capacity became a prime concern. The construction of a backfill plant in 2007 reduced the pressure on surface tailings storage area requirements, but as suitable land on which to construct further tailings storage was both expensive and difficult to acquire, a more efficient use of the available area was required. Dry tailings storage, where flotation tailings are filtered to provide an immediate return of process water plus ‘dry’ tailings filter cake for stacking, provided an answer to both the land area required, and the water management difficulties. The paper details the reasoning behind the change and the benefits obtained at Caijiaying by moving from ‘wet’ tailings storage to ‘dry’ tailings storage.Citation:Waldram, J T and Jia, R, 2016. On 15 August 1998 the first section of the PUTRA LRT system was opened to the public as a free service prior to official commencement of revenue service on 1 September 1998. It is a remarkable achievement to open a highly advanced medium capacity urban railway scheme in four years after the outline concept began. Even more remarkable is the implementation of the next stage which is the underground section planned to be operational in mid-1999. The decision to build the first underground railway in any major urban centre is a technical challenge. The PUTRA LRT System can be likened to Hong Kong when the initial MTR system began in the 1970s and Singapore MRT in the 1980s. Prior to the PUTRA railway very little bored tunnelling had been undertaken in Kuala Lumpur. A few shallow sewer tunnels had been built but the main experience of tunnelling in Malaysia had been for water, hydroelectric and road tunnels usually through granite formations. The ground conditions in Kuala Lumpur were known mainly from experience of piled foundations and occasional deep excavations. The suitability and likely difficulties to be experienced during bored tunnelling could only be theoretically predicted. In both Hong Kong and Singapore, government owned corporations were set up to implement the scheme, but in Kuala Lumpur the whole project has been undertaken by a private company PUTRA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Renong Berhad.

This monograph presents a unified theory of adsorption and desorption of aurocyanide on activated carbon. This theory has proved useful for CIP/CIL carbon adsorption and Zadra and AARL elution process and equipment design; in accounting for the effects of various water qualities and process temperatures; and in the development of reagents to improve these processes. The theory presented is based on rigorous fundamentals : Classical Eyring theory links initial first order kinetics with Langmuir isotherm equilibria, and this isotherm is demonstrated for the first time to be a consequence of the activated complex postulate of Eyring theory. Simple extension to Freundlich conditions at high solution tenors is possible, but not presented. Supporting entropy data determined by the author includes practically all the pioneering CIP plants built in South Africa and Australia in the early 1980s.

After eighteen months of discussions with employees and their trade unions, multiskilling was introduced at the Hellyer concentrator in early 1989, coinciding with the plant commissioning. Multiskilling was introduced with the Hellyer Skills Acquisition Program together with intensive training and performance assessment. Design innovations have helped to improve productivity. There have been some difficult times with personnel tending to return to the old and traditional ways of operating. In general, these have been overcome to ensure the success of multiskilling at Hellyer. The main factors making multiskilling effective have been continual training and assessment, and a competent team of shift supervisors. This has improved work standards towards the high level expected from a multiskilled approach without compromising safety standards.

With conventional undercutting sequence the infrastructure on the production level often has a short serviceable life before major rehabilitation is necessary and is characterised by high maintenance costs. The abutment stress zone is the main cause of this situation. The application of the pre-undercut caving method variant can increase the availability and utilisation of the production level When a pre-undercut is used development and construction are carried out underneath a previously undercut area, far away from the abutment stress zone, under more favourable stress conditions. This paper describes the design principles and the relevant results from the application of the pre-undercut variant over three years to the Esmeralda sector of El Teniente mine. The aspects described are the undercut-extraction, the undercut-development and construction distances, the geometry and drawbells opening, cave extraction rates, and the rate and height of undercutting.

An investigation was carried out at a US underground mine to characterise diesel aerosols and to asses the effects of various control technologies on the concentrations and properties of particulate matter and gases emitted by heavy-duty diesel-powered equipment. This study was dedicated to evaluating the impact on mine air quality of contemporary diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems installed on mining equipment. Additional efforts were made to assess the effect of blended biodiesel fuels, yellow grease and soy, ultra-low sulfur fuel, a fuel emulsion and of selected diesel oxidation catalysts on air quality and emissions. The carbon analysis performed on the collected samples showed that the tested DPF systems reduced the mass concentrations of elemental carbon in mine air by between 70 per cent and 92 per cent. In addition, TEOM measurements, collected during these tests, showed that the total diesel particulate matter concentration in the mine air was reduced by greater than 65 per cent when DPF systems were used. The tested biodiesel blends were found to reduce elemental carbon concentrations in the mine air by between 49 per cent and 33 per cent, for the B20 (20 per cent biodiesel/80 per cent #2 diesel) of soy and yellow grease respectively and between 66 per cent and 56 per cent for the B50 (50 per cent biodiesel/50 per cent #2 diesel) of soy and yellow grease, respectively. The water-in-diesel fuel emulsion was shown to reduce elemental carbon concentrations by as much as 85 per cent. NO2 measurements showed an increase in the maximum concentrations of NO2 when catalysed DPF systems were used instead of mufflers.

With the recent emphasis worldwide on environmental protection and sustainable development, finding an enriched mineral deposit no longer guarantees mining development. Only if the identified resource can be exploited in an environmentally-friendly manner is it possible that a mine may be developed. Designed primarily to aid with exploring for similar deposits of a particular type, traditional genetic ore deposit models tend to ignore the fact that all mineral deposits are characterised by type-specific environmental signatures. In fact, how an ore deposit can be mined, the commodities of interest extracted and the resultant mine wastes managed are all largely dictated by the geology and mineralogy as well as the environmental setting of the deposit. An environmental ore deposit model integrates such related information to identify the environmental challenges associated with mining an ore deposit of a particular type and facilitates the selection a suitable combination of methods to minimise environmental risks and impacts. Given that environmental management consumes a large portion of the budget for a modern mining project, making informed decisions at all stages of mining development can reduce the overall project cost. Through case examples, this paper demonstrates how environmental ore deposit models may be useful in mine permitting, active mining and in site decommissioning. It is only through an innovative and flexible approach that the mining industry can shed its tarnished image and gain the social license to mine.
