Byproduct coking is practised in three of the major Australian ironmaking centres, the Newcastle and Whyalla works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. and the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd. Coking first commenced at Newcastle in 1915 and at Port Kembla in 1938. The installations established at these centres include coal cleaning facilities and com- plete byproduct streams. The Whyalla plant, because of its location is somewhat less extensive, having no coal cleaning plant and a comparatively restricted byproduct section. As new batteries have been built every opportunity has been taken to incorporate modern design features and improved operat- ing techniques. This has included the provision of equipment to reduce atmospheric and water pollution. A marked reduction of markets for byproducts has had serious repercussions on the profitability of this section of the Industry.

The Black Star and Racecourse orebodies below 15 level contain a major portion of the primary silver-lead-zinc ore reserves of 56 million tonnes at 150 g/t Ag, 6.4% Pb and 6.5% Zn at Isa Mine. Extraction from this area is scheduled to begin in the early 1980's. Mining in this block will be quite com- plicated as the ore is contained in a dozen separate orebodies varying in width from 3 m to 20 m with only narrow barren pillars between them in some cases. Mining objectives which consider metal recovery, costs, environmental and safety factors, operating requirements and rock mechanics are used to compare proposals. The planning work involved in formulating mining proposals considers disposition of reserves, scheduling factors, sequence of extraction, extraction methods, haulage set-up and ventilation requirements.

Longwall mining is a form of underground mining and the principal extraction method for underground coal mining in Australia. The method is used in the mining of both thermal and metallurgical coal. The primary market for thermal longwall mines is that of the export market where price is governed against the Newcastle Thermal Benchmark index (globalCOAL, 2016).Australia’s thermal coal export outlook is considered moderate due to slower demand from major importing countries, as well as slowing domestic production. However, ‘Australia is projected to increase its share of world thermal coal exports and become the world’s largest exporter over the medium term as lower prices, increased domestic use and infrastructure constraints limit growth from other key suppliers’ (Office of the Chief Economist (OCE), 2016, pp 25, 58). On the contrary, and as a result of current global coal price trends, the basic economic principles of underground longwall coal mining are heavily stressed. From a life-of-mine perspective, influencing return on investment is at its greatest during project evaluation and execution. Thiourea has been recognised for a long time as an acid-stable complexant for gold. Generally, the use of thiourea has been shown to exhibit enhanced leaching kinetics compared to cyanide but suffers the disadvantage of excessive reagent consumption. Thiourea leaching is particularly com- patible with the extraction of gold from refractory ores. This is due to the need for an oxidative pretreatment to liberate the gold. Such pretreatments typically result in the production of an acidic residue. The application of novel thiourea leaching technologies to the extraction of gold from a bioleached pyrite concentrate was investigated. The interac- tion of leach variables with thiourea consumption and gold extraction was established. An economic assessment of thiourea leaching was compared with conventional cyanidation. The results indicated that gold leaching of the bioleached residue using thiourea compared very favourably with cyanidation.

Coal burst is defined as a dynamic release of energy within the rock or coal mass in underground coalmines that causes violent rock or coal ejection in the vicinity of mine excavations. It poses one of the highest safety and productivity risks in the mining industry as coal bursts have the potential to cause multiple fatalities. As Australian coalmines go deeper, the likelihood of coal burst increases. Thus, it is critical to assess the ground support requirements in coal burst-prone conditions. A previous study conducted by the authors (Wei et al, 2022) reviewed the support capacities of a wide range of ground support elements in laboratory tests. This study aims to examine the role and effects of the ground support elements and systems for Australian underground coalmines to minimise the damage caused by catastrophic dynamic failures (ie coal and rock burst) and enhance the safety of mine workers.

A proper economic analysis of pit slope design must reflect the trade-off between the benefits and the increased risks of slope fail- ure inherent in steeper slope angles. However, no formal framework for a proper analysis existed to date. This paper describes the results of the past four years' effort in which a formal eco- nomic analysis framework was developed and tested through a case study. This framework, in essence, consists of the availability of tested procedures and com- puter programs. The procedures as well as the programs are divided into two broad functional categories; (1) the first category related to assessing the economic benefits and costs associated with various pit slope angles and (2) the second category that determines the overall financial impact which the assessed benefits and costs exert to the mine operator's overall economic stature.

Optimising a mining or a quarrying operation about the overall cost is quite a challenge as there never is a situation where we have exactly the same conditions regarding rock properties, explosives' performance, mining equipment or evironmental restrictions. The amount of endless influencing parameters and variables make the evaluation process difficult. The enormous progress we have seen during the recent two decades in computing has however significantly increased our ability to evaluate and process the information gathered, and refine our existing prediction models. Refined models demand an increasing volume of good quality information to show reliable conformity with reality. There is a great need for co-operative work in the mining and quarrying society if we shall be able to screen all available data, systematically find the key-parameters influencing the results and to build robust scientific models. No organisations today have all the skilled people needed or can afford to hire the necessary specialists in all the overlapping branches. This paper highlights some on-going work where the Dyno Explosives Group is adding some new pieces to the giant jigsaw puzzle representing the ultimate model of the mining and quarrying operations we all of this society would like to see completed.

Geometallurgy aids the understanding of orebody variability through the integration of geological and processing information, thereby enabling spatial mapping of processing (eg comminution or separation) performance across a deposit. In order to do this, estimates of quantitative geometallurgical attributes are needed so that continuous downhole profiles can be generated for each attribute, providing vital data for the development of processing domains through geostatistical modelling. However, as traditional comminution tests are high cost and/or require large samples, current practice typically results in insufficient data density and distribution of comminution indices making it difficult to model and map deposit scale variability. The aim of this work was to find a method to estimate comminution indices based on data that is widely available at mine sites. This data includes mineralogy and chemistry of drill core samples, plus logging information such as lithology and alteration. Work to date indicates that comminution parameters such as semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) Power Index (SPI), Bond Work Index (BWI) and A*b (Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) drop weight test (DWT) Index) can be modelled using chemical and/or mineralogical data. The estimated hardness indices can then be propagated into the mine site database and used in the definition of processing domains that map inherent variability across a deposit. While there is reasonable agreement on the basic chemistry of the slag fuming process, there has been an on-going debate for nearly 50 years as to the nature of the rate controlling factors in its industrial application. There have been advocates in the technical literature for thermodynamic limitations on the one hand or kinetic limitations on the other. The different viewpoints result in very different predictions as to the technical and commercial potential of the process. A resolution of the debate becomes of importance as pyrometallurgical processes are advocated as a means of extracting environmentally deleterious elements from metallurgical wastes. The present paper reviews the arguments in favour of both equilibrium and kinetic control and puts forward the view that much of the evidence for limitation of the process by kinetic factors under all conditions is unconvincing. It is maintained that the process can approach thermodynamic equilibrium under industrial conditions and that this determines the ultimate limitation on its technical performance. It is acknowledged, however, that kinetic considerations may cause the batch process to fall well short of performance predicted on thermodynamic grounds. The strong process limitation arising from the influence of chemical thermodynamics on the likely outcome of a hypothetical continuous fuming process is contrasted with optimistic forecasts resulting from the extrapolation of process models based only on kinetic considerations.

Gold was initially discovered at Ballarat in 1851. After initial alluvial mining, underground quartz mining commenced in 1853, continuing until 1918. The historic miners were considered to be capable of mining anywhere in the world after overcoming the difficult conditions within the Ballarat goldfields. Whilst mining has changed dramatically since the early 1900s the challenges with underground mining at Ballarat have not. Modern pumping systems cope with the moderate water inflows. However, modern machinery and efficient mining methods influence opening sizes and extraction techniques. In some cases modern techniques have accentuated the challenging ground conditions and complex orebodies that were faced by the historic miners. As the Ballarat East project has progressed towards production, technical challenges relating to geomechanics and mine planning are being resolved resourcefully.

Tailings storage facilities are geotechnically complicated structures that develop heterogeneous strength profiles and varied porewater conditions. The monitoring of porewater pressures is one of the only direct measurements that can be performed to monitor the performance of a facility throughout its life and is of particular importance in upstream facilities. Foundation underdrainage, continuous and staged tailings deposition, climate inputs (rain, snow, humidity, evaporation, etc), and stratified tailings permeabilities can complicate this critical measurement that introduces uncertainty to stability analyses. These difficult conditions manifest in vibrating wire piezometer measurements as very low or negative pressure readings, both of which are within the instrument’s range of accuracy. However, the data can be difficult to interpret, and a range of interpretations are adopted from optimistic low phreatic surfaces to conservative fully saturated tailings. Where tailings are potentially liquefiable, these very low readings introduce further uncertainty regarding the pore space saturation ratio and liquefaction potential above the estimated phreatic surface. This area of uncertainty is the vadose zone, and its affect on tailings behaviour is not well understood. The two facilities analysed in this paper are upstream, raised embankments with tailings classified as clayey, sandy silt that have been found to be potentially liquefiable. The vibrating wire piezometers (VWP) at both sites show very low or negative readings when they are initially installed near the surface and then go through cycles of re-saturation and de-saturation. Eventually the readings settle as the VWPs are buried deeper within the tailings. The instrumented sections within the tailings column do not show consistent readings that would be indicative of a hydrostatic phreatic surface at either site. Rather, they are highly variable and can be interpreted as either representing a high phreatic surface within the tailings or as a ‘perched’ phreatic zone within the tailings layers. How the VWP data is interpreted has a significant impact on how the facilities are raised and operated. The design outcome for Site 1, which adopts a lower phreatic surface, results in an embankment that meets factor of safety (FoS) requirements under residual strength conditions without any buttressing. Conversely, a conservative (high) phreatic surface has been adopted for Site 2 and has resulted in the facility requiring a significant buttress to meet FoS under residual strength conditions.

Bulk explosives provide the energy to move a rock mass and reduce it to an optimal size (fragmentation). The intensity of energy needed depends on several factors including a customer’s geology and end objectives. An energy mapping tool has been developed to help customers to determine their bulk explosive needs based on these objectives.At one end of the energy map dealing with high-energy products, a new range of bulk explosives products for surface mining have been developed. With these products, it is possible to provide blast designs with up to nearly triple the relative bulk strength (RBS) of ANFO, and address primary focus areas for mining operations, including the reduction of drill and blast costs, improvements in production rates, better face advance through improved broken stock management, better drill productivity, improved milling efficiency and lower energy costs in surface mines.In this paper, field trial results from the first level of new high-energy products are presented. These products have an RBS 2.25 times that of ANFO. Industry variations of a smaller diameter (89 mm) pumped product for civil quarrying applications, and for large diameter (311 mm) hard-rock metalliferous mines are presented. For both cases, the run-of-mine fragmentation levels obtained with the new bulk explosives are contrasted with the fragmentation profile generated with the currently accepted product range applied in similar geological conditions. The new products show increased fragmentation across the measured size distribution, with reduction in P50 values of 20 and 37 per cent over the currently used product for the 311 mm and 89 mm diameter blastholes respectively.CITATION:Wilkinson, D, Rigby, G, Norgard, J and Thomson, S, 2015. Over the last decade computers have become an essential element in assessing the economic feasibility of mining new mineral deposits and in assisting a variety of related support functions. A broad overview is given of the many technical application areas where computers are contributing to the mining industry with reference to work being done on the evaluation of drill hole information, mineral inventory modelling, ore reserve estimation, financial analysis, process simulation, process control, workshop job scheduling, PERT applications, and com- puter aided drafting. In all these areas the computer has greatly reduced the manual effort involved in looking at alternatives. It has had a significant effect in eliminating delays in revising calculations, or rescheduling activities to incorporate new data or cater for changing conditions, while at the same time providing more accurate and prompt information for the management decision making Process.

As an Inspector of Mines in Queensland, my main responsibilities include the enforcement of the Mining Act 1968 - 1986, the Mines Regulation Act 1964 - 1983 and the Metalliferous Mining regulations 1985 to promote the safe and responsible exploitation of the States' mineral wealth. An important adjunct to this task is the offering of an advisory service to the mining industry. However, in the pursuit of my duties to this regard, I have sadly observed in some cases, numerous wrong doings and negative activities by miners which have led to their ultimate demise, not to mention that of others. Despite what I consider corrective advice, I have witnessed, again in some cases, disregard and blind pursuit for the wrong end. This then is a novel approach to get the message home in the form of a light hearted cartoon presentation relating the saga of an average Aussie battler entering the mining game unprepared, making the wrong decisions due to his own ignorance and the cleverness of others, leading finally to his and possibly others' downfall. It is not intended to insult any particular profession or group of individuals and only endeavours to impart to readers and listeners, the message of being prepared and alert when entering the gold mining industry. Even though the presentation focuses on the woes of a rookie alluvial gold miner, a similar analogy could be drawn with his hard rock counterpart since the basic issues that I have attempted to address are common. By no means is there a saga complete because there are many more traps a miner can inadvertently fall into and only time has prevented me from referencing them.

The semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill at the MMG Century operation has failing load cells that are essential to the control strategy used to stabilise the mill. Currently, mill-bearing pressure is used as a proxy for the load cells, but it has been found to be a noisy signal and lacking in useful sensitivity. It is also prone to variations and drift due to temperature. After consideration of a number of options, a non-contact acoustic array has been installed around the SAG mill to provide a more stable proxy load signal as well as other information about the internal operation of the?mill.The installation consists of 12 microphones to provide some detail into the operational differences that occur during normal operations at the MMG Century SAG mill. This acoustic approach acknowledges that operational grinding mills emit significant acoustic emissions that are a consequence of the dynamic environment prevailing inside them.Previous studies have attributed the acoustic noise to a range of events that occur inside these mills (Pax, 2011; 2012). Consequently, non-contact acoustic determinations of in-mill behaviour can provide powerful insights into the operation of the primary comminution tumbling mills. By measuring key microphone signal attributes at different positions around a mill, a holistic picture of mill internal operation can be developed.This paper will describe the installation of the 12 microphones and discuss the use of the acoustic load signals as a proxy for failing load cells. It will also present data from new observations of internal mill dynamics and the results of implementation of control using these acoustic signals. For hot mines, the use of mechanical refrigeration machines has become an essential feature of ventilation and cooling systems. Over the last 30 years, considerable effort has been made in developing refrigeration strategies and equipment to provide cooling that is cost-effective, reliable and energy efficient. In addition to these general design requirements it is necessary to take into account project specific factors such as long term mine cooling needs, operating strategy and installation time. This paper examines a number of actual mine cooling installations which illustrate how these features have influenced the design and installations. For many mines, it is known how the cooling requirements will increase as the mine develops, based on the life of mine plan. The design of the cooling installation must cater for both short- and long-term needs. The initial installation (to meet short-term requirements) must form an integral part of the ultimate cooling installation and as additional equipment and refrigeration machines are installed, it is necessary to ensure that the system remains cost-effective, reliable and energy efficient at all stages. For many mines, refrigeration machines are installed on surface and either operated near-continuously, or for the summer months only. Different maintenance strategies and policies with regard to standby equipment are highlighted for three mine installations. In spite of developments in cooling strategy, the cost of providing refrigeration remains expensive and many mines delay the introduction of refrigeration, as long as possible. When it is finally accepted that refrigeration is absolutely necessary, it is frequently necessary to æfast trackÆ the installation. To minimise site erection time and meet installation deadlines, factory pre-assembly and standardised modular equipment are widely used.

Segregation of tailings on deposition can occur as a result of a) sub-aqueous deposition, and b) sub-aerial deposition at lower solids concentrations (i.e. when the solids concentration is less than the segregation threshold). The effects are likely to be more pronounced in the case of subaqueous deposition.This paper presents the results of an investigation of a sub-aqueous tailings facility.Data from the investigation show extreme variations in particle size and density compared to test results for non-segregated ‘all-in” tailings. The results indicate that on segregation both the fine and coarse splits tend towards a well sorted (poorly graded) mix, and both have significantly lower consolidated density than the all in tailings. This result is reasonably well known for the case of the segregated fines (“slimes ponds”) but less appreciated for the coarse fraction. The results suggest that if the effects of segregation are not allowed for, the overall density of the deposit can be seriously over-estimated at the design stage. Also the quantity of water retained in the tailings can significantly influence water recovery and water balance results.CITATION:Seddon, K, 2018. Operations in an underground drill site have to co-exist within the mineÆs ventilation and operational system. The space requirements of a drilling operation have to be adapted to the limitations provided in available site space, which is usually defined by standard mining operations and geotechnical influences. These limitations affect borehole design, equipment positioning in the site layout and possible interactions with mining equipment and services such as water and power supply.The ventilation requirements for drill sites and the means employed vary with depth of the site, space and likely presence of gas. All drilling operations provide a particular service for the mine and in each case, drilling must operate in a manner which controls all gas, water and cuttings returning from the borehole. The various standpiping systems employed have evolved under differing influences and must cater for conditions during and after the drilling operations.The influences that gas content, pressure and flow, rib stability, cleat direction, borehole length, potential water pressure and flow have on a mineÆs operation and ventilation systems have to be considered in the design of standpipe length, diameter and fittings. Past history has a strong influence on common practice while worst case effects of a possible in-hole event should be catered for.This paper describes the early drilling systems and their limitations in ventilation and gas management. The drill site dimensions and set-up are discussed in the context of roadway conditions, equipment layout, ventilation and logistics. The use of standpiping to control all returns from the borehole is illustrated by referring to likely scenarios in a drilling site to achieve the most effective sealed depth to accommodate the worst case possibility of intersecting high pressure gas or water during the drilling operation. The detection and control of gas levels in mining is a continuing challenge for the industry. Standard detectors have many problems that could be overcome with laser based spectroscopic instruments, but to date these systems have not been suitable for mining conditions. This paper reports the development of a new digital data extraction scheme to modernise traditional cavity ring down spectroscopy (CRDS). CRDS is a direct cavity enhanced laser based absorption technique, which is used to allow the identification of an unknown substance by their molecular fingerprint; this unknown substance is identified by analysing the ring downtime of the light exiting the optical cavity. Traditional CRDS has many issues when analysing substances in hostile environments, or when multiple species may be present. This presents an alternative approach, called real-time CRDS (rtCRDS) that has the potential to overcome many of these issues and produces systems that could be used in the mining industry. The system utilises newly developed widely tuning quantum cascade lasers combined with improved optical cavities and novel digital data extraction to produce spectra over a 1500 nm range in a few seconds. The ring downtime measurements produced are accurate and have high sensitivity and maximum signal to noise ratio. This paper discusses the technique, illustrating the advantages compared to traditional systems and show real-time spectra for a set of molecules of interest to the mining industry. This paper also provided an analogy between this approach and that used in digital communications systems, and shows that this scheme is ideally suited to provide a network of sensors in hostile environments.CITATION:Harb, C C and Chalmers, D, 2015. "The website www.economicevaluation.com.au, which had its origins at the Project Evaluation Conference 2009, provides a free way for industry professionals to teach themselves economic evaluation. At its core is a set of fast-moving modules and three worked examples.The website recognises that economic evaluation is a discipline with a hierarchy of three levels:decision-makingevaluating the project/businesshands-on modelling.There are a set of modules for each level that describe the concepts and activities in detail. These emphasise that the most important and rewarding work is the evaluation of Level 2. The economic model created in Level 3 is merely a working tool and should not become a sophisticated ‘trophy’ in Excel that only one or two people can comfortably use.Hands-on modelling contains three sets of practices designed to make any model rigorous and intuitive so that it can be easily understood and used by others in the project team. Even if the model develops into a long, detailed and complex workbook, it should remain easy to follow and be intuitive. The website advocates freedom to devise any architecture that best suits the project under study, but promotes rigour through the following practices:four cash streams and graphsthree architectures – concept, prefeasibility and feasibilitysix principles.The modules in the Level 2 evaluation use conversational language to describe in detail the broad range of activities needed to properly understand and characterise a project/business.
