Valuers of mineral properties should be aware that accountants are a major user of their opinions of value. Reliance by accountants can range from obtaining comfort that book values in balance sheets are not overstated to establishing values by which to assess the fairness of a takeover offer. Accountants using mineral property valuations clearly can't be expected to have the same level of expertise as the valuer and ""second guess"" the valuation. But they do have an obligation, under the ASC guidelines and their own professional standards, to'check the logic and reasonableness of the valuation before being able to rely on it. This means reviewing the valuation report for general sensibility, discussing the methodologies and assumptions with the valuer and being satisfied as to his competence and independence. This paper outlines how accountants use mineral property valuations, the level of scrutiny applied to such valuations and the problems commonly encountered in practice by accountants seeking to rely on them. The paper also explains how values of-mineral properties are established in company balance sheets and why these often differ, quite validly, from fair market values.

Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is an Iron oxide copper-gold sublevel cave mine located 30 minutes north of Cloncurry in North-West Queensland. The underground mine lies beneath open pit excavations, which were in operation from 1999 to 2011. Fault structures carry large quantities of water from the cover sequence aquifer into the underground mine area. The open cut excavations exacerbates vulnerability of the underground mine to the high intensity wet season storms of northern Queensland. These factors combine to make hydrogeological issues high priority for mine operation. Water-related risks include the cost of removing water from the mine, flooding risk and mud rush potential.Turnover of key technical staff in late 2015 at EHM resulted in the mine being left in an untenable position of losing the primary source of technical knowledge. Due to encouragement of cross-disciplinary activity coupled with workload and resource sharing, the management team were confident in utilising on-site personnel to offset loss of experienced personnel.Remaining geology personnel took additional responsibility for hydrogeological monitoring equipment and planning of upcoming work. Consultant input was limited to review only and an emphasis was placed on knowledge transfer to the geology team. Using this strategy, a 13 hole dewatering program was successfully implemented, achieving a significant water level drop in areas of elevated hydrological risk, whilst also upgrading the hydrological monitoring sensor array.Through a development program centred on cross-disciplinary exposure, the technical team was able to retain key technical knowledge despite staff turnover and produce strong results outside traditional training and roles. SOME notes on the works of the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia will no doubt be of interest to members of the Institute, more especially as much of the work is new to Australasia.As many of the members who may read this paper have not been in a position to visit works of this kind, and are consequently not thoroughly acquainted with all the operations carried on, the author has taken the liberty, in some cases, to enter into explanation which would otherwise be unnecessary.The works are situated at Port Kembla (New SouthWales), about fifty miles south of Sydney, and are approachable both by rail and water. The Government has recently built a low-level jetty upwards of five hundred feet long, and intends installing at an early date an electrically operated portable crane to facilitate the handling of material to and from the boats. Thi.s will mean a considerable reduction in the length of time that boats are laid up at the jetty. There are also under construction two breakwaters, which, when complete, will materially assist shipping operations. The works as they exist are capable of turning out 1200 long tons of refined copper per month. It is gratifying here to note the unqualified success with whichthe E.S.A. refined copper met with on first being put on the market.

The Wattle Dam gold mine, located near Kambalda in the Goldfi elds region of Western Australia has recently progressed to an underground operation and is now believed to be Australia's highest grade operating gold mine. At end of March 2010, the deposit had reserves of 132 000 t @ 20.8 g/t for 88 000 oz and by the end of June 2010 had produced 110 000 oz from open-pit and underground mining. The Wattle Dam main lode is characterised by very coarse gold mineralisation. Gold occurs as cm to decimetre fracture fi ll veinlets, shear surface coatings and erratic fl akey clusters. The gold has no quartz or silica association and lacks adjacent low-grade mineralisation or alteration assemblage. Geologically it appears atypical of Archaean lode gold deposits and may represent an extreme end member of the type. Definition of the lode is largely dependent on effective geological identification of the host lode zone and an understanding of the erratic distribution and grade behaviour of a high-nugget, coarse gold deposit. Dependence on assay data to defi ne the lode zone would result in the deposit being mined incorrectly and much of the deposit being left unexploited. This paper discusses the geology, coarse gold characteristics and defi nition methods which are used to successfully defi ne and mine the deposit.

The New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) is a proven concept for the safe and economic construction of underground facilities. This is especially true for tunnelling activity where changing ground conditions are often encountered. However, the principles central to the NATM have gained only limited use within Australia, presumably due to the measurement process inter- fering with tunnel driving and the cost associated with instrumentation and interpre- tation expertise. The design and operating principles of two basic instruments are explained together with laboratory simulated test results and suggest- ions for use in an integrated NATM style approach to underground excavation and construc- tion. The two instruments monitor load in rock reinforcement and deformation in rock or primary and secondary linings. The instruments may be fitted with a miniature display module which outputs the measured parameter in engineering units directly. The design of the sensing components allows the instruments to be installed in various configurations suitable for routine performance monitoring, quality control, support element testing or detailed investigations. The display module which reduces the need for instrumenta- tion expertise should suit contractors and allow performance data to be obtained which quickly may be used to modify support procedures to suit ground conditions. When complemented by convergence measurements the devices enable most facets of the NATM to be implemented.

The objective in design of an excavation in a jointed rock mass is to achieve a prescribed degree of control of rock mass displacement around the excavation. Any excavation in jointed rock usually involves slip and separation along discontinuities as well as translation and ro- tation of constituent rock blocks. Thus, any acceptable model of behavior around an excava- tion must be capable of simulating the force displacement paths followed by the constituent elements, including rigid body translation and rotation. The distinct element method models such behavior by simulating the rock mass as an assemblage of rock blocks which interact through corner and edge contacts. Discontinuities are regarded as boundary interactions between blocks with joint behavior prescribed for these inter- actions. Introduction of structural element logic allows a variety of installed support sys- tems to be modeled. The response of the support to axial, transverse, and flexural loads is based on explicit algorithms similar to those used in the distinct element formulation. This allows large displacements and rotations and general non-linear constitutive behavior for both the support elements and the interface with the rock. This paper describes both the distinct element and structural element formulations and demonstrates several applications involving sup- port interaction with jointed rock.

Over the past five years in coalmine slope evaluation the application of 3D modelling has increased significantly as software has become more user friendly but also areas requiring evaluation have become increasingly complex. Often simplistic 2D Limit Equilibrium modelling and analysis has been poorly used to solve slope stability issues by back analysis and subsequent forward predictive analysis. A plane strain condition with slope movement perpendicular to the slope strike is assumed where in reality the problem is more complex. This often leads to a misinterpretation of the failure mechanism because the failure mechanism being modelled in 2D does not generally represent the actual failure mechanism observed in the pit, with 2D modelling often oversimplifying a slope. This paper presents a case study where the initial slope assessment and remedial design evaluation was undertaken as a 2D Limit Equilibrium model which led to an overly conservative and costly remedial solution being implemented. Subsequent modelling of the slope using both 3D Limit Equilibrium and Finite Element methods were able to provide a better understanding of the structural complexities associated and correlate well with slope monitoring data to create a more realistic outcome.

The use of teleoperation in mining is increasing due to requirements to improve safety and reduce the number of people required to work in remote and difficult environments. We recently completed a project to develop a teleoperated control system for a rock breaker at an iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, with the objective of demonstrating the feasibility of remote rock breaking over long distances. This required controlling both the rock breaker and an array of pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras using joysticks. Controlling the cameras distracted operators from the primary task of controlling the rock breaker to position and fire the hammer. This lengthened task times as both the operator's attention and their hands have to swap between different control interfaces. In this paper, we present a novel design using human eye gaze as an interactive input for the remote camera control. It follows a simple and natural design principle: Whatever you look at the screen, it goes to the centre. A prototype system has been implemented by integrating computer vision based eye tracking technology, with the advantage of being real-time, robust and marker-less. We conducted a user evaluation, where users undertook a control task while obscuring the direct view of the working area and using a remote camera to transfer the live video stream as the visual feedback. Subjects were required to participate in the experiment using eye tracking camera control and traditional joystick control respectively. The statistical analysis of objective measures indicated that our novel eye tracking control significantly outperformed the joystick control. The results of the post-experimental subjective measures also revealed much higher user preference for using eye tracking control, which provides clear evidence that this design is a better interface for remote camera control in mining teleoperation settings.

Differences in the gold contents of sub-sample duplicates, derived from a single bulk sample are a function of analytical and random error, inhomogeneity within the bulk and natural variations in the distribution of particluate gold. By minimising bulk sample inhomogeneity and determining analytical precision, the residual natural variation may be modelled statistically to give an estimate of Bold particle sizes.

Roof bolting with resin bonded bolts has been developed extensively in French coal mines. There are three aspects of this development: 1. The reason for and the care used in the development of roof bolting from use as a reinforcement in a classical arched roadway to use as the only support in roadways in ad- vance of the working face (the roadway being reinforced behind the face); 2. The problems encountered and studied, such as choice of boltable roadways and determination of the technical data in designing a roof bolting pattern; 3. Only because roof bolting has been controlled by safety rules, and especially by accurate measurement of strata behaviour, has this system of support been expanded aapidly in France since 1967.

Over the last decade heap leaching with a cement binder has allowed the economical leaching of low grade gold ores of less than 2 grams/tonne. Despite the continued use of cement as an agglomeration aid, numerous leaching operations continue to experience channelling and blinding problems. This paper describes the development of polymeric agglomeration aids, Extract Ore 9760 and 9960, which when used as a partial cement or lime replacement can result in a higher rate of and/or a higher total gold recovery in plant evaluations. Extract Ore in combination with cement acts to produce a stronger agglomerate which results in reduced fines migration during leaching and helps prevent blinding of the heap. Both of these changes will give a more even flow of cyanide solution throughout the heap and improve solution contact efficiency within the ore. Polymeric agglomeration aid programs are now being used by heap leaching operations in three different countries. A summary of benefits identified at some of these operations are presented in this paper.

Tin-polymetallic vein type deposits are one of the major source of metal producers in the Circum Pacific Belt. This type of deposit is of great importance for the modem electronics and medical industries because of their high content of rare metals (especially indium and bismuth). We have studied two representatives, Tosham of India (Cu-In-Bi-Sn-W-Ag-Au), and Mount Pleasant of Canada (Zn-Cu-In-Bi-Sn-W), using proton and electron microprobes in order to delineate the distribution of medicallhigh-tech rare metals. The electron microprobe study showed that major indium carrier in such type of deposit are roquesite (CulnS2), sphalerite, stannite and a Cu-Zn-Fe-In-Sn-S mineral; and that indium is incorporated in sulfides by coupled substitution like Cu + In = 2(Zn + Fe). The proton microprobe showed that indium at trace levels is also present in chalcopyrite and pyrite. In addition, zinc, copper, arsenic, antimony, selenium, tin, and bismuth are common in chalcopyrite and pyrite. Arsenopyrite contains nickel, copper, zinc, silver, tin, antimony and bismuth. In chalcopyrite and pyrite, zinc, arsenic, indium, bismuth and lead are higher in Mount Pleasant ore, but silver is higher at Tosham. Also thallium and gold were found only in Tosham pyrite. The Tosham deposit is genetically related to S-type magma, while the Mount Pleasant deposit is related to A-type granite. Tosham ore contains zinc-bearing biotites that coexist with chalcopyrite in ore bodies but Mount Pleasant ore lacks such biotite. We propose that the difference in elemental abundance between the two deposits are caused by the different character of source magma and different mineral associations of the ore body.

This paper presents information on the processing of minerals by decrepitation that can be an integral part of their mineral dressing. In the case of carbonates, processing by decrepitation is a special operation that has its objective as concentration of the oxide. Selective fragmentation of magnesite brought about by decrepitation uses pseudomorphosis which was observed at thermal decomposition of carbonates. By decrepitation of magnesite high-grade MgO concentrates were obtained with MgO contents above 80 per cent. With the sideritic ores a very important phenomenon was observed consisting in the removal of quartz in the fragmented fine-grained product which favourably affect pelletisation of the fines. The selective concentration of the MgO product brought about by thermal decomposition of dolomite accompanied with decrepitation was negligible.

Rio Tinto Iron Ore is currently working towards finalising comprehensive Native Title land access agreements, which cover all of the current eleven mines and infrastructure owned and operated by the company in Western Australia's Pilbara region. Critically, the agreements represent a mutual commitment to a long-term relationship and address many areas of concern by promoting indigenous enterprise, well-being and regional development opportunities. Our objectives in the process are to obtain the informed consent of the traditional owners for our Pilbara expansions while providing benefits to them in a way which provides lasting and substantial improvements to health, education, housing and real jobs in the mainstream economy.   To facilitate the agreement negotiations, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) proceeded in 2005 to research and design a specific strategy around Aboriginal relations and local community engagement in the Pilbara. Wherever we operate, Rio Tinto follows a fairly simple formula in working with communities, which is comprehensively aligned to local context.   This presentation provides an overview of Rio Tinto Iron Ore's community engagement strategy in Western Australia's Pilbara region. It will also explore the establishment of regional standards on employment, business development and contracting that have been developed to ensure Indigenous people are engaged in the development of their region and are able to contribute to supporting the growth and development of mining in the area with the expectation that there is prosperity for all. Jarrah Decline is currently the only underground operation at the Boddington Gold Mine, (BGM). The mine is located 120 km SE from Perth in WA, with mineralisation hosted within deeply weathered felsic and intermediate intrusions and volcanic rocks of the Saddleback Greenstone Belt (Morley and McBride,1995). Open cut operations commenced in April 1987 with a mill throughout of 3.OMtpa. A number of upgrades have since taken place, with the oxide material throughput currently milled at a rate of 7Mtpa. In 1992 a separate circuit, the supergene mill, was commissioned to treat copper material from the open cut and now ore from the Jarrah Decline. Current throughput in the supergene plant is 30,000 tonne per month, with a varied blend according to mill requirements. Total gold production from the Jarrah Decline in 1994 was 60,000 ounces from 90,000 tonne of ore.

Gold was discovered at Waihi in 1878. In 1987 the modern Martha Mine opened in the middle of the town of Waihi. Newmont Waihi Gold as the current licence holder has been operating the mine since 2000. The current open pit was scheduled to stop production in mid 2006. An underground mine is currently being developed to the east of the town.   In 2001 serious subsidence issues from historical underground mine workings outside the mining licence and the forecast closure of the open pit acted as a catalyst for the development of new communication initiatives.   In this context Newmont Waihi Gold and the Hauraki District Council initiated a community consultation process with the people of Waihi. The Waihi Community Consultation Committee (WCCC) was established in May 2003. After an initial brief to act as a forum for community participation in closure and rehabilitation of the Martha Mine, the group quickly took on a much more proactive role working towards the long-term social, environmental, cultural, economic and spiritual sustainability of Waihi.   In the course of over three years of meetings all groups represented on the committee have presented their views, developed ideas and established an organisational structure to bring those ideas to fruition. The challenge now is to work together to consolidate likely options, seek sources of funding, produce business proposals and implement the plan for the future of Waihi.   This paper backgrounds the experience to date and describes the outcomes of the process. Gold mineralisation at Porgera is inferred to have been derived from a deep differentiated magmatic source which is capped by a series of (now tilted) inward dipping sills and stocks, which comprise the Porgera Intrusive Complex. An arc normal transfer structure provides a conduit, at the intersection with an arc parallel structure, into which basic magma derived from the deep melting of mantle material has been emplaced. Two phases of mineralisation display an association with late stage feldspar porphyry intrusives. Stage I carbonate-base metal-style gold mineralisation occurs as early quartz-sericite, then massive sulphide and late zoned Mn-Fe-Mg-Ca carbonate vein/breccias. Magmatic fluids derived from the deep magma source, are interpreted to have migrated along the margin of a feeder stock to the sills, and south to Waruwari. Stage II epithermal Au-Ag quartz-style gold mineralisation occurs as early fluidised breccias and carbonate veining, followed by zoned quartz-roscoelite-carbonate-gold vein/breccias, and late carbonate and/or sulphate open space infill. Magmatic fluids are interpreted to have utilised the same plumbing system as the late stage feldspar porphyry intrusive, and then migrated into the Roamane Fault which was dilated by; dextral rotation on elements of the transfer structure, normal faulting, and refraction around the competent footwall hornblende diorite. Bonanza gold is localised in a jog in the Roamane Fault, hangingwall splits and at intersections with cross structures. Bulk low grade Stage I gold has been deposited by the mixing of magmatic fluids with cool gas condensate waters, whereas high grade Stage II gold mineralisation resulted from the rapid quenching of mineralised magmatic fluids by oxygenated groundwaters.

Longwall mining in Australia is approaching maturity. Longwall production from 'state of the art' Australian longwall mines now rivals similar US based longwall operations. Regrettably however, Australian gate road development rates in general fall short of the required development to longwall production ratios that are required to sustain annual longwall production capabilities. By contrast, most US based longwall mines achieve the required development to longwall production ratios to sustain their longwalls. This is despite many having to drive three heading longwall panel gate headings to meet regulatory requirements.
