Randgold ResourcesÆ MorilaÆs gold leach plant is subjected to uncommon æoxygen stressesÆ. Feed ores exhibit very high oxygen demands, primarily caused by iron sulfides. In addition, ore oxygen demand varies significantly over time, as well as between different feed ore sources. The inability of the Morila gold leach plantÆs oxygenation system to cope with these high and fluctuating oxygen stresses manifested itself in variable gold residue grades, and cyanide consumption rates.Management launched a Morila oxygen system review project during September 2009, with the objective of auditing the performance of the then current oxygenation system, against required performance parameters as calculated from oxygen demands of the various feed ore types and targeted dissolved oxygen levels in the leach train.This paper describes the systematic changes made since 2009 to the Morila oxygen system in four main areas: O2-supply plant, O2-volumes, O2-controls and oxygenation equipment. Data are provided on corresponding improvements in leach plant performance. The Kanowna Belle gold mine is located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, approximately 18 km north-east of Kalgoorlie. The processing plant is designed to process 2 Mt/y and has the capability to treat both refractory and free milling ore from the Kanowna Belle and Kundana mining operations.The Kanowna Belle ore is refractory with the gold mineralisation occurring mostly as fine-grained inclusions in pyrite or as very fine-grained gold located in pyritic arsenic rich growth zones. The Kanowna Belle refractory process includes flotation, roasting of the flotation concentrate, and calcine leaching to extract the gold from the ore.Mineralogical analysis of feed and tailings streams from the flotation circuit have shown that the gold bearing minerals are well liberated and confirmed they are mainly associated with pyrite. Nearly 40% of the flotation circuit losses are in the -38 µm size fraction. To improve the flotation circuit recovery, the fine particle gold recovery was targeted. A Cavitation Tube column was selected for the site-based pilot test work program. Design of embankment dams often requires seismic analyses, or an assessment of earthquakeinduced ground and dam movements. There are a large number of cases where earthquakes have triggered sliding and lateral spreading of embankments, resulting in excessive crest settlements. In some instances, liquefaction and embankment failure has occurred resulting in loss of containment. Hence, evaluation of the effects of earthquakes on embankment dams is a critical design aspect. This paper discusses the methods and the results of a seismic liquefaction assessment and deformation analyses of a tailings dam. The tailings dam consists of a perimeter earth core rockfill starter dam which has been raised using upstream construction methods. The embankment raises (formed by an upstream clay blanket and an all-in rockfill body) are constructed over the impounded tailings, which are potentially liquefiable. Extensive field and laboratory tests were undertaken to assess the liquefaction potential of the tailings, and also determine the material properties required for seismic stability and deformation analyses. Numerical modelling of seismic liquefaction and deformation was carried out using FLAC (Itasca 2016) to predict the magnitude and spatial variation of deformations that may lead to an uncontrolled release of tailings. Primarily based on a parametric assessment of UBCSand and Finn-Byrne constitutive models, the results of the analyses are presented and compared for evaluation.

Flotation recovery in geometallurgical modelling is usually predicted based on relationships developed from batch flotation testing of different ore types. These batch flotation tests are usually performed at a constant set of operating conditions and at a fixed feed grind size P80. Usually the laboratory feed grind P80 is that which is expected to be produced in the full-scale flotation circuit for that particular ore type.Flotation recovery will be a strong function of the valuable mineral particle size distribution, with lower recovery of ultra-fines due to poor flotation kinetics, optimum recovery for the intermediate sized particles and lower recovery for the coarser particles due to poorer liberation of this fraction. This valuable mineral particle size distribution is not characterised by the solids P80 parameter alone. The proportion of material in each class will also be a function of the slope of the size distribution and the degree of preferential grinding of the valuable mineral in comparison to the total mass of the ore.This paper will demonstrate (through example) how these other size distribution parameters can change with a change in grinding technology, the size and operating conditions used in a grinding unit and the characteristics of the classification technology used in conjunction with the grinding unit. Case studies will be presented that demonstrate how this can result in these parameters being very different in laboratory testing to that produced in the full-scale comminution circuit. A rule of thumb that laboratory rod milling rather than ball milling produces a size distribution most similar to that of the full-scale grinding circuit will be challenged. These differences can result in a significant change in flotation recovery. It is therefore important to consider these parameters when developing a laboratory geometallurgical program, to enable more accurate prediction of the flotation recoveries that will be achieved in the full-scale process.CITATION:Runge, K C, Tabosa, E and Jankovic, A, 2013. Since the early 1990s it has been evident that electricity demand has outstripped investment in generation and transmission. At the same time, concerns were being expressed about the risks associated with the run down of the Maui gas field. It is axiomatic that the necessary investments firstly require a stable and supportive regulatory and fiscal environment, and secondly that such investments have long lead times. A unwillingness by successive Governments to fund the necessary infrastructure, however, lead to the profound restructuring of the electricity with the ultimate objective of transferring the investment risk from Government to the private sector. Successive power crises since 1992 result from a failure to put in place a regulatory framework necessary to provide the environment to allow the private sector to make the needed investments within the necessary timeframe. The electricity sector has now stabilised to the extent that the regulatory risks associated with generation investment have been reduced. This does not mean that risk has been eliminated, however, and both economic and environmental issues will continue to constrain investment in some power proposals particularly those in the South Island and especially any South Island coal or gas thermal proposal. This is firstly because of several very simple economic issues:  1. while the South Island may have significant coal resources it lacks a significant electricity market; 2. except for a six to ten week period in a dry year, low cost hydro will price any large-scale South Island thermal out of the market which will restrict any large scale thermal station to a dry year and/or peaking load; 3. except for a six to ten week period in a dry year, export capacity on the HVDC link to the North Island is constrained to around 964 MWe (and 482 MWe from North to South in dry years); and 4. construction of any new thermal plant in the northern half of the North Island will price any South Island thermal station out of the market. There are also significant environmental issues associated with the establishment of a large scale thermally based power station in the South Island. Because the South Island lacks any large scale economically proven gas reserves, the environmental constraints considered are those associated with coal production. A coal mine dedicated to power generation will have significant on-site impacts associated, in particular those associated with disposal of opencast overburden and visual impacts. These will, however, be partially offset by the relative remoteness of such sites to population centres. What cannot be offset, however, is the off-site impacts, in particular, CO2, SOx and NOx emissions, water disposal and acid mine drainage.

As a prelude to studying the sorption desorption and permeability behaviour of coal cores in a triaxial stressing rig using sorb- able gases, the air permeability of typical cores was measured. Lump coal samples were obtained from three gas-troubled collieries in Queensland and New South Wales. These were cored in the laboratory and a simple laboratory permeameter employed which accepted 38 x 40 mm cores in a thick rubber sheath. Air pressure of 500 kPa was applied outside the sheath to provide suitable sealing between the rubber and the coal. Differential driving pressures up to 100 kPa were employed and the air flow measured by displacement of water columns in inverted graduated cylinders. Flow measurements accurate to + 2% could thereby be achieved. Coal lumps were cored both parallel and perpen- dicular to the bedding plane, and were observed prior to measurement for any notable features, in particular for the presence of fissures. Between samples an overall variation of from 100 milliDarcy was found in Appin, Westcliff and Leichhardt coals. Western Metals Mt Gordon Operation is a copper mine and processing plant situated 120 kilometres north of Mt Isa. The unique Mt Gordon copper process utilises a whole of ore acid/ferric pressure leach to produce copper cathode from the Esperanza massive sulfide copper orebody. Esperanza ore contains chalcocite, covellite and minor chalcopyrite hosted in a massive pyrite matrix. These ore stocks will be depleted in late 2003. Recently the process circuit has been upgraded to allow the treatment of lower grade Mammoth ores. These include the installation of a ball mill to complement the existing SAG mill, a single stage rougher flotation circuit and a tailings thickener. The leach bleed neutralisation plant was also upgraded at this time. Commissioning of these new circuits occurred in March 2003 and involved all the challenges of ensuring current production levels were successfully maintained while new process steps were incorporated into the whole circuit. This paper explains the background flow sheet of the patented Mt Gordon process and the reasoning behind the enhancements required for an already successful copper leaching circuit. Included are discussion of the influences of the new ores on individual process components such as comminution, leach chemistry and solid/liquid separation. Longer term ore processing options are also discussed.

Mining cycles have come and gone and with them there have been dramatic swings in the levels of interest and student entry into minerals-related education programs, hence graduate supply to the industry. So what is the problem? These trends will keep happening and the industry will keep on keeping on – or will it?This paper discusses recent trends in Australian minerals education programs and some international examples, together with some of the more recent initiatives taken by both the minerals education sector and the industry, such as the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) and MEA. The real problem is that things will not just keep going the way they have over recent decades – there will come a time when there is no longer a supply of minerals academics available to provide the educational programs; and universities will simply shut down subcritical mass mining programs and invest in the much more lucrative programs such as commerce, law, medicine, etc. By the time this starts to happen it will be at least ten years too late for any last-minute reactive response by industry, if they were to try and avert such a consequence. International experience with mining programs bears out this scenario quite clearly.It is therefore timely for industry individual mines and mine management to take a much more strategic look at their role in the education sector. Sustainable mining also means sustainable minerals education – without one, the other will not function over the long-term. There is a pressing need for long-term strategic buy-in by industry into the education sector – not just for the good times, but also through the tough times. This means much more than a scholarship here or there, but includes such commitments as major industry-university research partnerships; collaborative recruitment initiatives and much more. The paper will discuss a range of such issues, problems and opportunities to address these important issues through strategic, comprehensive, long-term commitments by industry and equally significant and appropriate responses by the education sector. Global methods used to explore for minerals have progressed relatively slowly since the development of the first diamond core drill in 1863. Since then, key developments such as wireline geophysics (1920s), the tricone drill bit (1930s) and aeromagnetic surveys (1940s) all occurred in response to global events. In this project, BHP’s WAIO Geoscience operations team hypothesise that a global movement towards a greener future as well as an increasing intolerance for safety events will drive another step change in exploration methods. We have leveraged our relationships with exploration contractor partners and industry leaders to develop a realistic vision for 2033 and beyond, where drill rigs, earthworks and geophysical units are operated and maintained remotely; emissions of dust and waste are eliminated; hazardous energy sources are controlled; procurement is based on sustainability rather than cost and carbon emissions are tracked with the same rigour as production metrics. We have combined these visions into a series of graphical illustrations with the aim of inspiring ourselves, our vendors and our peers to collaborate further on producing a step change in our industry.

This study addresses a widespread problem confronting the mining industry: the deleterious effect of clay minerals in flotation. This problem is seemingly exacerbated by the presence of iron contamination from grinding media. The interaction of clay minerals and grinding media in copper and gold flotation was investigated in this study. A low-clay ore and a high-clay ore were obtained from Telfer to represent different contents of clay minerals, while stainless steel and mild steel grinding rods were used to produce different grinding chemistry, in particular, iron contamination. Flotation tests on an unsized and sized basis were conducted to reveal how clay minerals and grinding media affect copper and gold flotation. Iron contamination and the oxidation of copper minerals were quantified by ethylene diamine-tetra acetic acid (EDTA) extraction. It is interesting to find that both clay minerals and iron contamination depressed the flotation primarily in fine particles smaller than 33 ¦m, and clay minerals played a dominant role. Although flotation of coarser particles greater than 33 ¦m was less affected by clay minerals and iron contamination, coarser grinding to increase P80 was not an effective way to improve copper and gold flotation for the high-clay ore. This study suggests that to improve copper and gold flotation from clay ores, clay dispersion in conjunction with the minimisation of iron contamination may be required.CITATION:Wei, R, Peng, Y and Seaman, D, 2013. The amphibolite-facies metabasaltic rocks of the Mine Mafic Package at Plutonic Gold Mine, Marymia Inlier, Western Australia, contain an estimated total endowment of 12.2 Moz of Au, which includes 4.71 Moz of past production and 2.77 Moz of reserves and resources; the remainder comprises lower-grade inventory. Over 65?000 multi-element analyses of whole-rock core and face channel samples from the underground workings of the deposit have been collected by portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) using a handheld Innov-X Omega pXRF unit. The analyses were performed on pulverised samples through paper bags, and were corrected using a pulverised, matrix-matched, reference standard. This method of data correction compares favourably with conventional XRF analyses performed on the same samples.A preliminary study based on pXRF analyses from a small number of drill holes found that a geochemical stratigraphy was evident in the pXRF data, and that this stratigraphy strongly controlled the location of Au mineralisation. The present study incorporates a much larger pXRF data set that samples a greater volume of diamond drill core and face channel samples and presents the data in a three-dimensional (3D) framework.This data set allows an investigation of the mineralogy of Au mineralisation with varying geochemical associations across the deposit. Historically, there has been a strong relationship identified between As and Au, which has caused issues with metallurgical performance, rendering some areas of the deposit only marginally economic. Utilising seamless data integration of the pXRF data set allows for recognition of the different styles of Au mineralisation using elemental concentrations and ratios from the multi-element analyses (Au:As, Au:As:Cu, As:Cu vs. K:V), and to visualise the distribution of these different mineralogical associations in 3D. The results of the 3D modelling and geochemical characterisation of the different styles of Au mineralisation are currently the focus of an extensive metallurgical testing program, the preliminary results of which are presented here.

At the Waikato North Head Ironsand operation, NZ Steel Mining Ltd is using a Bucket Wheel Excavator û shiftable conveyor mining system to excavate Titanomagnetite bearing sand and clay. The system utilises two Bucket Wheel Excavators with a two level shiftable bench conveyor and common trunk conveyor to deliver the material to a processing plant. The system was commissioned in November 1984 and has proved itself to be a high capacity, low cost method of excavating. Techniques of handling high sand faces have been developed and the conveyor layouts are going through a process of change to cope with the variable geo technical conditions and remain within: the characteristics of the excavators. The safety requirements for operating the system have been of a high standard and the experience has increased the confidence of the Company and the Mines Department Inspector's, for the first Bucket Wheel Excavator Mining system in New Zealand.

A test on Taylor's rule of mine life using published data on open pit porphyry copper mines confirmed that mine life is, on average proportional to the fourth root of reserve tonnage. Deviations from this rule-of-thumb occur to a large extent as variations between regions that are qualitatively explained in terms of differences in grade, infrastructural needs or special taxation effects.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (Cliffs) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia. Ore is mined from three separate hubs and trucked to Koolyanobbing. There it is crushed and screened to lump and fines finished products and railed to Esperance port for export to Asian customers. Cliffs is renowned in the marketplace for its consistent product quality. In 2010, 9 Mt of ore was exported to Asia.Over the last three years, Cliffs has systematically refurbished its product quality system (PQS), to improve efficiency of production while maintaining its high standard of product quality. Particular attention has been given to reducing inventory, which has required significant modifications to the production process design.In redesigning the production process, emphasis was placed on maximising the application of the inherent blending in each of the production process steps and dedicated blending was only introduced where essential. Simulation modelling and statistical analysis of process capabilities were utilised to develop a system that optimises inventory, minimises rehandle, eliminates several decision-making steps and maintains a pull focus throughout the value chain.The new planning functions are now fully integrated and effectively control long-term grade variability rather than relying on long-term stockpiling. The production process design and the daily crusher blend plan are used to control short-term grade variability. With the upgrading of the planning processes the accuracy and consistency of algorithms for lump per cent and lump and fi nes grades became more important and an increased geometallurgical function has been added to the company.The continuous stockpile management system was upgraded to increase the effectiveness of the daily crusher blend planning process and is now the sole intervention point in the production process for grade-based decisions. Grade control systems were modified to utilise advances in software and geostatistics to deliver accurate short range planning models. The reconciliation and sampling systems have also been refurbished with an emphasis on practical application and feedback loops.Accountability and transparency are provided by management reports that are generated from a centralised data warehouse and the introduction of a corrective action system. Standardised reports are available to all stakeholders and a quarterly KPI scorecard assists the management review process.The successful rejuvenation of the PQS has culminated in operational efficiency through the implementation of an integrated end-to-end process flow. Shareholder value is maximised through maximising recovery of the resource and minimising costs. Customer focus is maintained by reliably delivering product with acceptable and low grade variability.

There is a close relationship between the mining industry, economic growth, and technological and social development. Mining activities benefit all economic agents, but only during a timespan determined by available reserves, primarily driven by internal factors such as production rate, technology and costs, and external factors such as prices determined by the market and taxes and royalties controlled by governments (Gordon and Tilton, 2008; Henckens, 2021; Tapia Cortez et al, 2018). The intense use of Mineral Commodities (MC) needed to maintain the current lifestyle has placed ore depletion as one of the main threats to sustainable economic, social and technological development. However, ore depletion does not only arise due to the finite nature of MC, price fluctuations or technological challenges. It is also triggered by the ‘economic limits of extraction’, determined by the optimisation of financial factors and technical restrictions within the regulatory framework (Henckens, 2021). Most reporting standards – if not all – define ore reserves as ‘the economically mineable part of a Measured and/or Indicated Mineral Resources’ determined by the technical and economic viability of extracting, processing and commercialising MC having the NPV as the fundamental decision – making tool (JORC, 2012; Krzemień et al, 2016). However, is the NVP an ‘economically’ basis index able to capture the complexity of economic phenomena? No, it is not, and it is crucial to define what is economic and financial. Although related, they are different disciplines. Economics studies the behaviour of the different market agents, including human behaviour and policies and explains the factors involved in the scarcity (or surplus) of goods and services. Finance focuses on financial systems and managing funds considering the time, cash available, and risk. It involves banks, loans, investments, and savings and can be considered a small subset of economics (Simon, 1959; Tapia Cortez et al, 2018). Given the economic nature of ore Reserves, endorsed by governments (Figure 1), NPV is an incomplete tool to determine ore Reserves as it limits the problem to simply maximising cash flows instead of optimising the economic benefits for all economic agents. In addition, using the rigid scheme of controlling taxation – unable to adapt to new market or economic conditions and systematically increasing – within the NPV framework only increases the sub-optimisation of ore reserves, mainly due to the systematic taxation rise. Short-term benefits of higher taxes and royalties are unlikely to offset the impacts of reducing exploration and project development in the long-term, which not only boosts ore depletion concerns but also reduces competitiveness, threatening economic and social welfare (Fisher, Cootner and Baily, 1972; Gordon, Bertram and Graedel, 2007; Lilford, 2017; Mardones, Silva and Martínez, 1985; Radetzki, 2009; Rodrik, 1982; Tan, 1987; World Bank, 2000). Holistic methods and collaborative tools, able to dynamically simulate and assess how changes in the technical settings, regulatory framework (taxes and royalties), and financial factors affect the availability of ore reserves and the impact for all economic agents, should be incorporated into the evaluation process to fill the gap.

The Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) underground mine is situated adjacent to the Great Artesian Basin in North Queensland and within a fracture zone. Underground development commenced in February 2008 and has extended to approximately 1000 vertical metres below the surface.Groundwater has been encountered in numerous locations throughout the mine, predominantly on the eastern side of the orebody and often related to fault structures. Most of the groundwater encountered has been managed with conventional pumping systems; however, on occasions large water inflows have been encountered, which have had a significant impact on the planned development of the mine. Some of the intersections encountered had the potential to compromise the mine from a combination of high temperature (over 45°C), high pressure (3500 kPa) and high flows (50–100 L/s).This paper describes three case studies where significant water inflows were encountered and then controlled by the injection of cementitious grout into the rock mass. The case studies are the 1650 mid-shaft heading, the 1325 shaft access decline and the 1625 to 1475 fresh air rise (FAR) raise bore. Each case study includes a brief description of the event that occurred and the grouting equipment and techniques developed to enable mining to continue.The paper also describes the development of a hydrogeological map of the mine, the probe-hole regime used for high-risk headings and the required processes and systems to inject both cementitious grouts and polyurethane resin into the rock mass.CITATION:Purvis, T, Calverd, J and Greve, A-K, 2014. The Olympic Dam deposit is truly a world-class IOCG-Ag deposit, the world’s fourth largest deposit of copper and the world’s largest known single uranium deposit. Traditional and non-traditional methods have been used to accurately model the geology and mineralisation of the Olympic Dam deposit. Conditional simulation models have long been used as the most robust method for estimating risk and uncertainty in mine planning decisions at other mines around Australia and the world. There are many challenges associated with simulating the Olympic Dam deposit at a selective mining unit size sufficient for underground mine planning purposes. These include the size of the deposit, resulting in hundreds of millions of grid blocks; the disseminated nature of the zoned sulfide mineralisation. And lastly the direct relationship of the relative abundances of the sulfide mineral species that are crucial to the Olympic Dam smelter performance. Several geostatistical techniques have been utilised in the workflow for the Olympic Dam Conditional Simulation model to address these challenges. The key techniques are: • Projection Pursuit Multivariate Transform to de-correlate the main elements before simulation. • Pluri-Gaussian implicit boundary simulation method to simulate the mineralisation domains. • Spectral simulation method of de-trended and de-correlated attributes with account of local varying variance. The resulting conditional simulation models have been validated against histograms, grade-tonnage curves, cross-plots and assessed for variogram reproduction. This paper presents how the final conditional simulation models compare to benchmarking models created using alternate estimation techniques of ordinary kriging and local uniform conditioning. It also presents a validation process using historical samples to test final estimate accuracy of the simulation models.

Fibre reinforced shotcrete has long been accepted as temporary ground support in both mining and civil tunnel linings. Greater knowledge and understanding of shotcrete as an engineering material and advances in its quality have enabled designers to eliminate the requirement of a second pass lining. The initial shotcrete can be used as the permanent tunnel lining or be incorporated into the final lining design, rather than ignored and considered as sacrificial.For the initial shotcrete lining to become a suitable permanent tunnel lining it must be able to establish and maintain stability over time when subjected to all possible loads. To ensure this, best engineering practices are required during the design phase of the project to analyse; ground conditions including rock mass properties, ground and ground water quality, rock mass loadings, excavation sequencing, and construction methodologies.The increased durability of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete over traditional tunnel support, in the right ground conditions, makes it possible to achieve a serviceability design life of greater than 100 years (as required in most infrastructure projects). By specifying a good quality shotcrete mix and ensuring adequate quality control for batching, fibre dosing, preproduction testing, excavation sequencing, and application control, it is possible to eliminate the requirement of a secondary lining. The properties of a suitable permanent lining must be well established using suffi cient preproduction testing in combination with post application monitoring.A major benefit of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete in ground support applications is the removal of any requirement for workers to work under unsupported ground. Its use can also significantly reduce, if not eliminate, the manual handling associated with placing traditional reinforcement such as lattice girders and mesh. Both of these benefi ts are significant with the ever increasing focus on health and safety.This paper highlights factors that must be considered in the design and specifications to enable an initial shotcrete tunnel lining to become the permanent shotcrete tunnel lining.
