Kinetic Dependence of Refractory Gold Sulfide Biooxidation Using Different Microorganism Association In this investigation, refractory sulfide concentrate from a deposit located in northern Russia was treated using biohydrometallurgical technology. The objective of this work was to compare the accelerated refractory sulfide concentrate biooxidation abilities of the pure and mixed mesophilic and moderately termophilic acidophiles cultures. Pure culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and two associations of the: Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans + Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans + Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans + Leptospirillum + Sulfobacillus were used in this investigation. Results of sulfide concentrate bioleaching were analysed using the enzyme catalysis theory. Different effective kinetics parameters were calculated for Michaelis-Menten equation, such as Michaelis' constant and maximum rate of the enzymatic reaction. It was shown that the increase of microorganisms' species decreased Michaelis' constant. Lower Michaelis' constant characterises increasing bacteria ferment affinity to substrate (treated concentrate). As a result, the rates of sulfide minerals biooxidation have increased. This investigation has demonstrated that cultures of the different microorganism species, including moderately termophilic, allow to enhance different parameters of the biohydrometallurgical technology for the refractory gold sulfide concentrate treatment. We can see that bacterial leaching stage duration decreased and sulfide minerals oxidation increased. When the bioresidues were subjected to the hydrometallurgical stage, which includes aeration and sorption cyanidation, the operation factors were also enhanced. The decrease of aeration duration and the growth of the precious metal extraction by sorption cyanidation was achieved. Cyanide consumption was also reduced. The results of this investigation were used in design of an industrial plant.

The author contends that geoscience is presently under-utilised in the rock fragmentation by blasting process. Before we can set standards in this area, the following is required: mine geologists need to gain a better understanding of the blasting process and the blasting team needs to obtain a better appreciation of geology. Both groups need to be informed of what can be done to improve blasting outcomes, why it is necessary and how it can be achieved. By working closely together, both the geoscience toolkits and blasting expertise can be applied and focused on priority blast sensitive issues, with potential to improve mine economics and safety. Finally, and ideally, mine geologists need to take a leadership role in raw rock mass data collection and data management, and invited to take an active role in rock mass related behaviour data collection, integration and presentation.This paper attempts to provide insight into all these prerequisites for setting a new standard for collaboration and mutual learning in this strategic opportunity area. The potential for blasting to leverage downstream processes is highlighted. Blasting objectives and blast design principles are introduced along with the required rock mass related inputs. Some hazardous geological materials and environmental conditions are described, along with how they can affect operational complexity.Four case examples are used to illustrate the need for closer liaison between geology and blasting professionals. The first related to grade control blasting, aims to demonstrate how a blasting geology approach can add significant value. Case example two demonstrates how geological models and bench face analysis can assist with fragment control. The third and fourth case examples involve an overview of two case studies where timely geological and geotechnical knowledge input and intervention into blasting activities may have reduced losses due to blast initiated open pit slope collapses.CITATION:Little, T N, 2017. In focusing on open pit mine scheduling, one of the biggest areas that a mining engineer can add value is in the area of cut-off grade optimisation. It is not atypical to add up to an extra 20 per cent in value by bringing forward higher-grade ore and deferring costs into the future.There are many techniques available to maximise net present value (NPV) when applied to open pit mine scheduling. That in itself raises the question of why so many of these techniques exist. The short answer is that none of these techniques are robust. Every time the problem changes, the algorithms also have to change.Instead of trying to make a problem fit the constraints of an existing technique, there is much to be said for usefully hybridising different approaches. This paper describes an innovative approach where evolutionary algorithms are combined with both local search and linear programming. The goal is maximising NPV through optimisation of cut-off grade policy and extraction sequence for an open pit mine. "The Nyrstar Port Pirie Smelter, located on the eastern shore of the Upper Spencer Gulf in South Australia 230km north of Adelaide, began operation in 1889 to process lead concentrate from the Broken Hill lead and silver mines. The site still operates an updraft sinter machine, commissioned in 1955, with the product fed into a blast furnace. While sinter plant technology has changed and improved since 1955, development has reached the stage where further enhancements are not possible or economic. High purity lead concentrates command lower margins and for the smelter to remain economically viable a wider range of higher value materials must be treated. The current flowsheet cannot meet this demand. Additionally, community blood lead levels particularly in children below four years of age, are a critical indicator used to measure the site’s environmental performance. The smelter’s environmental licence to operate is dependent on meeting future community and regulatory expectations. To achieve this a major step change in the emission performance of the smelter is required. Since 2008 pre-feasibility work has been undertaken to develop a new flowsheet and business model to allow Port Pirie to operate sustainably into the future. The main requirements were for the smelter to reduce lead and sulfur dioxide emissions that impact on the local environment and community to meet current and future environmental expectations, as well as dramatically reducing current feed constraints and change the business case from a marginal business to a sustainable profitable business. After reviewing all practical options a decision was made to replace the sinter plant with an Outotec Top Submerged Lance (TSL) furnace. This paper describes how the new furnace technology was selected and how it will be integrated into the present flowsheet; the unique funding arrangements that are in place to deliver the redeveloped site; and future opportunities that are associated with the implementation of the new flowsheet. The Western Australian gold industry has approximately 100 operating plahts, mainly CIP/CIL. The nature of the State's rapidly expanding gold industry gave rise to concerns over management of the  cyanide hazard, in that most plants are remote from major population centres, have a workforce with a high tum over and use highly saline process water. Approximately 4500 workers in the industry have the potential to be exposed to cyanide in the course of their normal work.   This paper outlines the risk management strategy developed by Government and industry to monitor atmospheric HCN gas in the work environment and the role of continuing education and training along with regular site inspections by Department of Mines Inspectors.

Environmental regulators are increasingly adopting risk-based approaches to protect aquatic ecosystems. The Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC) and the Agriculture and Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand (ARMCANZ) (2000) introduced a risk-based approach to water quality guidelines that use decision frameworks to adapt water quality guidelines to local environmental conditions. Environmental quality objectives are no longer a simple ‘pass or fail’ number such as restricting total suspended solids (TSS) concentration to a specified limit for a particular rainfall event. This approach ignores spatial and temporal variability and the complexity of aquatic ecosystems. The risk-based approach establishes levels where adverse effects may occur. If these objectives are not met, further risk-based investigation is undertaken to assess the potential impact to the ecosystem. Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) developed a dynamic simulation to predict the variability of sediment discharges, which is applicable for risk-based impact assessment of aquatic ecosystems. The application of the methodology over the life of a mine site is illustrated using a proposed South Pacific mine.The site location is in extremely rugged terrain with a high annual rainfall of approximately 4.7 m. There were two major sediment ponds proposed to reduce sediment discharges. A sediment and hydrology model was developed in Goldsim to provide daily estimates of run-off flows and sediment concentrations. A modified algorithm based on the Australian water balance model was created and incorporated into the Goldsim model and calibrated using recorded field data.The sediment module was developed based on a Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) assessment, an annual prediction of soil loss over a catchment. A land-use type erosion vector was developed for different land-use types and for each of the subcatchments, a subcatchment erodibility vector was calculated. This vector and the daily rainfall erosivity factor were used to estimate the daily soil loss. The estimated soil loss and the modelled run-off yielded predictions of daily sediment concentrations. Finally, a sediment settling module was used to predict the daily efficiency of the sediment ponds and hence discharged sediment concentrations.The results of this modelling form the first part of a quantitative risk-based assessment into suspended solids impacts. The second part is the assessment of the effects of these predicted TSS concentrations on aquatic ecology. As part of the feedback-loop required in a risk management framework, if the environmental quality objectives are not met then further management decisions and actions may be required to reduce the risks presented by suspended solids. This may include modifications to: the mine-development plan; construction techniques and scheduling; processing techniques; rehabilitation strategies; or hard-engineering solutions such as sediment basins or flocculation.The Goldsim water-balance model provides a quick and efficient method of testing potential remedial actions on predicted sediment loads and concentrations. In combination with a cost-benefit assessment, options for reducing sediment releases from the mine site can be effectively and quantitatively compared thereby providing mine operators with a basis for decision-making. Regulators can also be satisfied that potential impacts to aquatic ecology have been comprehensively assessed and the necessary management decisions have been initiated to limit risk to the environment.CITATION:Ind, M and Usher, B, ?2014. Grey River Gold Mining Ltd commenced dredging alluvial flats in the Grey River Valley in 1989. Previous drilling indicated over 100 million cubic metres of gravels with some 90 per cent of the gold in the bottom seven metres. The dredge built by Rahco, Spokane, was innovative in a number of aspects but particularly in the fact that a separate ladder with a cutter and pump was used to strip the overburden and a bucketline to mine the gold bearing wash below. Metallurgical studies and exploration were initiated when the project commenced. Leasing and environmental considerations were investigated and action taken. While progress is being made, the operation at this stage is not meeting required production and performance. Main problems have been with the stripping system and wear.

The classification of Mineral Resource estimates for reporting in accordance with the JORC Code is a statement of the Competent PersonÆs confidence in the estimate and an attempt to convey that confidence to the various users of the resource estimate. In general the classification process is either largely subjective, relying on the Competent PersonÆs experience, or relies on statistical measures derived from the estimation process. These statistical measures may not necessarily relate to the overall confidence in the resource which must also take account of the confidence in the geological inputs to the estimation. Several authors, including Jackson et al (2003) and Dominy, Noppe and Annels (2004), have addressed methods of including consideration of geological data and its reliability into the classification process. Henry and Parker (2005) have discussed a quantitative measure for classification of Measured and Indicated Resources related to mine production parcels. These methods rely on the availability of sufficient information for the application of geostatistics, data evaluation techniques or repeated interpretation of data to provide an indication of confidence. They are suitable for very advanced projects. In 2005, using a modification of the financial audit æcontrol and quality criteriaÆ principles, then widely accepted within Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest), the principal author developed a scheme which categorised the classified resources into æcontrolÆ and æqualityÆ (or risk) categories. Control covers all aspects of the data collection, the geological interpretation, the data analysis and the modelling of tonnage and grade; it is also influenced by the documentation of the estimate. The quality criteria are a subjective measure of risk associated with the estimation of the resource and refer to the risk that the tonnage and grade are not realised and the consequences if decisions are made on the basis of these estimates. By evaluating the generally accepted level of risk attributed to these quality ratings by Competent Persons within Newcrest, a graphical representation of the confidence in the resource ounces was prepared for communication of the expected confidence in the resource statement.

Systems such as Davey Bickford’s Daveytronic® SP blast initiation system and electronic detonators have been an integral part of drill and blast activities in Australia for over a decade, with the significant benefits of electronic blasting well documented. Since 2010 the Multiblast feature has been commercially available, which enables eight individual blast patterns (up to 1500 detonators each) to be blasted in the same firing window. Synchroblast has been in active operation since 2012, which allows a blast of up to 4500 detonators – either as a single blast pattern, or several smaller adjacent blast patterns – to be reliably initiated.Multiblast manages blasts separately but concurrently, allowing all blasts to conduct prefiring checks simultaneously from the firing point utilising only one remote blasting unit. Each blast can be selected and fired individually, in a sequence determined by the operator by scrolling through the colour display. Synchroblast automatically detects the blasting configuration, and manages all detonators as a single blast pattern. This simplifies the design and blasting processes for the mining operation.Multiblast and Synchroblast are routinely employed throughout Australia and globally in both open cut and underground operations, enabling optimal productivity due to increased blast volume and reduced operational downtime associated with blasting events.A number of case studies will be presented in this paper, detailing various mining operations that are consistently blasting in excess of 2500 detonators per blasting event as a part of standard drill and blast operations. This paper illustrates the use of variography and moving average plots as an aid to analysing variations in the process that can be used to direct the improvement efforts. The hydrometallurgical processes used in manganese metal production consist of sequential unit operations that include milling and reduction of manganese ores. Leaching of the reduced ore, is followed by solid-liquid separation, residue disposal, solution purification and electrowinning of manganese metal completes the process. The nearly 250 integrated process control loops rely on reports of pH, flow pressure, level, temperature and chemical analyses. Metallurgical accounting, reconciliation and process control is achieved through monitoring of the chemical and mass balances within the manganese reduction plant, requiring approximately 50 000 analyses of solids, powders and liquids each month. The largest numbers of samples are taken in the cell house. Changes and variations monitored by sample statistics ensure that the manganese products comply with predetermined specification limits. Optimising the information-value of the approximately 50 000 samples in the manganese plant is carried out in tandem with ongoing process optimisation. Variographic analysis of daily sampling data suggests that the cyclical behaviour evident in the moving average plots is only a reflection of random residual variability and not a reflection of true underlying variability related to cyclical phenomena. Low resolution in the variogram of daily sampling data masks the short-range variability that emerges when hourly data are analysed. Hourly samples collected over a 39-day period (giving 941 sample data), helped identify short-range cycles in the process. The relative distribution of variability for daily sample intervals, indicate that 57 per cent arises from V[0], 18 per cent from V[process] and 16 per cent from random residual variation. V[0] includes all the uncontrolled sampling error arising from a poor sampling protocol, the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. This confirms the suspicions regarding the suboptimality of the sampling protocol and the way it is implemented. The absence of long-term trends in the leach suggests that short-term variation (less than one day) dominates the process. While the control charts indicate that the overall processes are maintained above the lower specification limits and the target values, there is nevertheless a considerable amount of variability in the system that overhangs the processes and threatens to impact them negatively. Although the variability in the leach is above the prescribed limits, the volatility is a matter of concern because it seems to be uncontrolled. The comparison of the various sources of variability in data collected on an hourly basis suggests that the short-term random variability (V[0]) accounts for almost 50 per cent of the variability in the process. The main source of this variability is due to errors in the sampling protocol and is probably related to the size of the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. Remediation of FE and GSE will probably lead to a reduction in V[0], whereas V[process] could be mitigated by reducing the biases associated with DE and EE in particular.

This paper looks at recent advances in the United Kingdom (UK) tunnelling industry with particular reference to the A3 Hindhead Project. A 1.8 km long twin bore tunnel is the centrepiece of the A3 Hindhead scheme, which commenced construction in 2007 and is being delivered under a UK Highways Agency early contractor involvement (ECI) contract. The proposed construction methodology is progressive mechanical excavation of a horseshoe-shaped tunnel with shotcrete installed close behind the face using robotic spraying equipment. The tunnelling medium is a æsoft rockÆ sandstone for which there was little previous tunnelling experience, requiring extensive geotechnical investigations and an innovative approach to lining design. A 240 m long section though sandy material utilising a steel pipe umbrella is also required. This paper describes the development of the tunnel planning and design including the most recent developments in UK road tunnels. The innovative approach to the design of the following is discussed:the æpermanentÆ primary lining,an observational technique allowing optimisation of the steel pipe umbrella design,a plain concrete secondary lining designed for resistance to a hydrocarbon fire, anda spray-applied membrane.

Water auditing and water conservation measures are fast becoming the quantitative tools for water balance reporting in the mining and minerals processing sector. Therefore, this paper was written to describe the process of water auditing in a goldmining environment and to contribute towards building an appropriate water management framework for The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for sustainable resource processing (CSRP). The research will assist with the assessment of water balances in mining and hydrometallurgical processes and ongoing probabilistic modelling for Newmont Mining Corporation, its wholly owned gold mines, and its joint venture operation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM). Kalgold or KCGM are the managers of a joint venture project between Barrick Australia (50 per cent) and Newmont Mining Corporation (50 per cent) at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia (WA). Boddington Gold Mine (BGM), Western Australia, will commence operations this year and manage the new goldmine expansion project. BGM is 100 per cent Newmont owned and will operate to continue mining gold and copper from the existing (BGM) site that was decommissioned in 2001.

In March 1990, Heritage Mining conducted a 2000 line km high resolution aeromagnetic survey of all its prospects in the Coromandel Peninsula. One of the areas covered was the Onemana Peninsula, situated about 5 km north of Whangamata. Details of location and geology are given by Robson and Stevens (this volume).   The detailed helicopter-borne magnetic and radiometric survey over the Onemana area consisted of 163 line kmÆs of flying, and was carried out in order to assist in the definition of hydrothermal alteration and pre- or post- mineralisation structures. The line spacing chosen was 100 m, flown east-west, with a mean sensor terrain clearance of 80 m. Tie lines were flown north-south every kilometre for levelling purposes. The sensor was a Geoinstruments G-813 proton precession magnetometer in a towed bird, with data recorded using a Geoinstruments G-2000 acquisition system.   The Onemana alteration system is at the northern end of a major north-north east trending structural corridor defined by regional aeromagnetic surveys performed by AMOCO in 1980 (Rabone, 1991). T his structure hosts a number of other extinct hydrothermal systems including Karangahake and Golden Cross. In the Onemana contour plot the predominant north-northeast structures form the boundaries of a large area of subdued magnetism in the southern part of the surveyed area that is caused by intense hydrothermal alteration. This area is about 3.5 km long by 1 km or more wide and contains outcropping sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias, as described in Robson and Stevens. A number of other structures transect this alteration zone, with strike directions ranging from northwest to north. A northwest feature notably truncates the zone to the south, while the northern end seems to be simi1arly bounded; however as data coverage ends at the coast, this feature is less conclusive.    Two distinctive types of strongly magnetic rock were discernible the contoured data. The strong negative magnetic anomalies the north and west are caused by fresh negatively magnetised rhyolites. This was confirmed by ground follow-up work that showed the rocks to be fresh biotite rhyolites with high magnetic susceptibilities.

Mine ventilation is an essential part of underground mining operations used to provide fresh and cool air, as well as to dilute and remove contaminants from the work environment. This paper presents an overview of the ventilation and gas management systems in one of the underground coalmines in Iran: Parvadeh_1 mine. The mine is located in the Tabas coalfield in the South Khorasan province. It is the only fully mechanised mine in Iran utilising the longwall retreat technique. The mine produces 1.1 to 1.3 Mt of coking coal annually. The mine ventilation system currently utilises two 630 kW exhaust surface fans. The gas management system includes surface to in seam (SIS) predrainage boreholes. The underground mine is equipped with an underground gas reticulation pipeline that is connected to a surface plant for the production of methane gas. A long-term production schedule for the LabMag iron ore deposit in northern Quebec, Canada is derived using stochastic integer programming. The optimisation formulation maximises the schedule’s net present value while simultaneously managing the risk of deviations in production tonnages and qualities by considering stochastic simulations of the orebody instead of a single deterministic model. The formulation also smooths and minimises haul truck requirements and ensures that as mining progresses, space is created within the mined out pit for the return of waste material.CITATION:Spleit, M, 2014. Some Otago quartz veins display spectacular open-space filling textures indicative of shallow formation. Fluid inclusions in some such veins show that fluid immiscibility occured before or during mineral deposition. This immiscibility or 'boiling' occured at depths ranging from about 3 km to within as little as about 100 metres of the paleo-surface. Temperatures of mineralization range from 190 - 250¦C. Metals deposited in these veins include: Au(+Ag), Hg, Sb and As. Hydrothermal alteration is confined to minor silicifation of immediate wall-rock schist, less than about two metres from the veins. These veins have some similarities to classical epithermal systems elsewhere in the world, although wall-rock alteration is much less developed in Otago. From analogy to these classical epithermal systems, it is speculated that gold mineralisation may be found beneath Otago stibnite and cinnabar localities.

Ridgeway Gold Mine (RGM) is an underground sublevel caving (SLC) operation that is owned and managed by Newcrest Mining Limited (NML). Production drill and blast practices are critical to the success of the SLC method at RGM. SLC production ring precharging was introduced in November 2001 to enhance these practices and deliver safety, productivity and cost improvements. Current precharging practices require up to two rings to be loaded ahead of the ring to be blasted in each drawpoint. The explosive may be required to remain in the up-holes for periods of four weeks or more prior to blasting. During this æsleepÆ time it is subjected to repeated shock from the blasting ofadjacent rings and from rings in adjacent drawpoints. The project described in this paper was designed to gain an understanding of the factors affecting explosive performance in the precharging environment and to develop explosive products and operating practices that would meet RGMÆs requirements in terms ofsaf ety, reliability and blast outcomes. Several months oflaboratory and field testing were required to characterise the explosive and quantify the effect of post-loading blasting shock. These results were used to determine the most appropriate loading and sleep time criteria for RGMÆs precharging practices. In addition, the information is being used to guide the development of the next generation of emulsion explosives for use in underground precharging operations.
