IN the brown rock phosphate fields of Tennessee there are large deposits of phosphate matrix in which quartz is a major constituent of the gangue, and which cannot be beneficiated by the conventional washing process to yield a concentrate of suitable grade for use in the electric furnace. A huge tonnage of high-grade phosphate concentrate is produced in the Florida pebble district from low-grade siliceous feed. However, the characteristics of the low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore are such that flotation under the conditions employed in treating the Florida ore1-2 results in inadequate beneficiation. INVESTIGATION OF FLOTATION METHODS Flotation has been used in Tennessee primarily to produce a concentrate of premium grade by moderate enrichment of a marketable grade of phosphate.3,4 A secondary use was to increase the recovery of phosphate from the fines (down to approximately 200 mesh) from medium-grade ores with a concomitant moderate increase in over-all grade.3,5 It was considered desirable to investigate methods of improving the grade of washed products from low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore when these products were substantially below the requirements for use in the electric furnace. The present paper describes the results of a laboratory-scale study of factors that affect the beneficiation of such siliceous phosphate ore by flotation. The primary objective of the investigation was to ascertain the conditions under which the ore could be made to yield a concentrate suitable for reduction in the electric furnace. It was assumed that a phosphate concentrate for electrothermal reduction should contain at least 26 pct P205 and should have a weight ratio of silica to lime of not more than 0.80. Since a concentrate of moderate grade can be used in the electric furnace, and since, as Grissom4 has shown in detail, the ore will not bear the cost of expensive treatment, the study of collectors was limited to the relatively inexpensive fatty acids. A secondary objective was to determine whether a portion of the phosphate could be recovered in a grade suitable for treatment with phosphoric acid to produce 45 pct superphosphate. The ore consisted of variably cemented sand interlayered with clay. The sand layers were composed of grains of quartz, phosphate, and clay embedded in a matrix of clay and phosphate. Some clay was finely disseminated in the phosphate grains. Little massive high-grade phosphate was present. The material used in the flotation tests was a washed sand that had been separated from the ore in a bowl classifier at the TVA phosphate-washing plant. The percentage composition of the sand was as follows: P205, 20; Si02, 40; CaO, 29; Fe203, 2; A1203, 3; F, 2.3. The particle-

EDUCATIONAL trends as reflected in curricular changes are of interest and importance in engineering educa¬tion both as matters of record and as considerations for the future. The data on which the evidence of this report is based were obtained by sending questionnaires to all schools in the United States granting the undergraduate degree in mining engineering, metallurgy, or metallurgical engineering. The questionnaire had two parts, one inquiring as to the general nature of revisions made or planned, and the other asking for information on specific courses added to or dropped from the curriculum, or given more or less time than formerly. The frequency with which curricular changes are made, even in normal times, is notable. Although it was expected that the period since 1939-40 would show numerous revisions, it was somewhat surprising to find that of 62 mining or metallurgical curricula in existence in 1939-40 and reported in the present survey, 58 had been revised or are shortly to be revised, 52 having already been changed during this period. Moreover, approximately half of the mining schools that have already revised their curricula, and probably a similar proportion of the metallurgical schools, are about to make further important changes.

THERE is a considerable lack of data on thermody-namic properties of hard-metal alloys. Only two papers 1,2 give mean values of specific heat in an unknown temperature range; more recently the author3 gave more detailed information on the mean specific heat in the temperature range from 20" to -190° C.. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Method—Experimental procedure followed a method suggested by Oelsen and coworkers.4 It requires samples of some 100 g of weight. The time of measurement is prolonged (30 min) but one run allows the measurement of a lot of positions on the heat-content curve. Results4 were found to be in good agreement with "best values" given by kelley,5 Kubaschewsky and Evans,6 etal.

Previous experience in leaching chalcopyrite with dilute sulfuric acid has generally resulted in rather poor extraction. However, the reaction rate of the leaching process can be significantly improved by an increase of the crystal lattice defects of the chalcopyrite. It was found that subjecting chalcopyrite to a milling action involving a strong impact, permits 99 percent of the copper to be extracted in a subsequent single leaching stage with at least stoichiometric quantities of sulfuric acid in the presence of oxygen at 100°C. Simultaneously, about 80 to 85 percent of the sulfide sulfur content is converted to elemental sulfur. The dependence of the reaction rate of chalcopyrite on the pretreatment, temperature, oxygen pressure and acid content will be discussed.

METALLURGISTS and mill operators appreciate, in a general way, .the economic or commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product but few have correlated in detail fluctuating metal prices with the metallurgy. They know that many factors such as metal price, dedusiions for returning charge, transportation, percentage of metal in head ore, etc.; all affect the commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product. In practically every mill some one at some ' time has calculated the amount of recovery that can be sacrificed for each percentage increase in grade of concentrate and from this calculated ratio the commercial or ., economic tail has been established. Such a ratio finally becomes a well-entrenched rule by which the progress of the metallurgy is judged.. When once established, these-, ratios are but seldom corrected to changes of metal prices for each possible grade of concentrate that may be produced. The calculation is tedious when often repeated. Other methods have been suggested and used to correlate the commercial with the metallurgical phase. A factor .derived ,by multiplying the grade of concentrate by recovery is often used, but is of little importance because it does not possess a single commercial quantity. The percentage monetary recovery calculated by dividing the gross value of the ore into the net smelter return gives a good economic index and, is to be commended, but it is difficult to correlate exactly and quickly the work of each day on a commercial basis.

COUNTRY RISK ANALYSIS A company operating in a foreign country assumes all the risks that it would at home. However, beyond these, it assumes risks that arise from the unique political economic, financial conditions of the foreign country which it operates. These risks are known as "country risks". The importance of these risks has grown appreciably in the recent past (particularly in the aftermath of Iran's revolution in the late 1970s and Mexico's debt rescheduling of 1982-83), and as a result, country risk analysis has become an increasingly useful management tool. Country risk analysis seeks to assess the probability that countries will service their aggregate foreign liabilities on time, as well as the probability that country conditions could inhibit the debt service capability of private sector debtors. This involves assessment of both the ability and the willingness of countries to meet their external liabilities in a timely fashion. "Ability" is linked economic and financial variables: principally, a country's economic structure, foreign exchange generating capacity and debt service burden. On the other hand, "willingness" is tied to political factors: mainly the economic/financial orientation of government policy and the stability of economic decision making. Ability: Economic, Financial Conditions and Prospects Judgement of a country's ability to meet foreign financial obligations begins with a detailed study of a country's external balance sheet which compares the country's foreign liabilities and assets. Table 1 below presents country balance sheets for Mexico, Korea and Indonesia. On the other hand, the relationship between Korea's external liabilities and assets ($50.5 billion and $7 billion, respectively), is more favorable and helps explain why Korea has been able to meet debt service payments and maintain its access to the international capital markets. Indonesia has even a more favorable relationship between its foreign assets and liabilities, $31 billion and $9 billion, respectively, and its debt is mostly lower interest rate, non-bank debt, making for a less onerous debt service burden. After the balance sheet, the analysis turns to a comparison of the country's foreign exchange earning capacity and its prospective financing requirements, that is, the country's future earnings stream

Residual viscosity, the ViSCOSitY at a given pressure and temperature minus the dilute gas viscosity at the same temperature, has been found to be independent of temperature for pure components and mixtures for simple molecules and light hydrocarbons. The residual viscosities for methane, ethane, propane and four mixtures were correlated as a function of reduced density and molecular weight. INTRODUCTION Earlier efforts in correlating the viscosity of light hydrocarbons and associated gases under pressure, primarily by some form of the corresponding states principle, have been reported elsewhere.7 The formal theory of corresponding states principle for viscosity from non-equilibrium statistical mechanical arguments for simple molecules has been developed by Helfand and Rice.13 The most serious obstacle to the development of a generalized corresponding states representation of viscosity data, even for simple molecules, has been the limited quantity of precise viscosity data of pure components and mixtures over a wide range of pressure and temperature conditions. Viscosity data on light hydrocarbons have recently been contributed by several laboratories.2,6,8,23,25,26 In the study of the viscosity of nitrogen, Michels and Gibson" observed that the viscosities of nitrogen as a function of density gave parallel isotherms. The same behavior has since been reported for other gases.".= The observed behavior indicates that the residual viscosity or the viscosity at a given pressure and temperature minus the dilute gas viscosity at the same temperature is a unique function of the density. Abas-Zade,1 Michels and Botzen,18 and Michels, Bot-Zen, Friedman and Sengers,19 observed similar behavior for thermal conductivity, the residual thermal conductivity being defined in a manner parallel to that of residual viscosity. Thodos and co-workers 4,15,24 applied the residual viscosity concept to the viscosity of pure monatomic and diatomic gases. Ellington and co-workers10,25 made the residual viscosity vs density plots for ethane and propane, but omitted the region below a residual viscosity of 15 micropoise and showed a systematic separation of the ethane isotherms in the low density region. Eakin correlated the residual viscosity of methane, ethane, propane and n-butane empirically as a function of density and molecular weight: Carmichael and Sage6 recently presented ethane residual viscosity vs density values in the gaseous liquid, and near critical regions as a single univariant function of density. Flynn, Hanks, Lemaire and ROSS" have contributed extremely accurate viscosity data to confirm that the residual viscosity concept is essentially correct, but may not be accurate within 0.1 per cent of the viscosity value for the gaseous state- The recent studies by Giddings12 indicate that the residual viscosity of methane, propane and each of four methane-propane mixtures are unique functions of density Over the temperature and the density ranges studied.

Methods of accounting for the feed size in analyzing the size distribution shift during comminution have been discussed in a number of papers.1,2,3 Based on experiments which charles2 performed with single Pyrex specimens, Schuhmann4 pointed out that the size modulus of an assembly of particles should be determined by the energy expended per unit volume (or mass), independent of the size of particle being comminuted. In this same paper, Schuhmann derived the Charles energy-size reduction relationship by considering that complex comminution operations can be considered to be the summation of many individual comminution events, each of which must be governed by Were 6wi is the mass of a particle receiving the impact, 6Ei is the energy delivered to the particle, ki is the size modulus of the product resulting from the impact, a is the distribution modulus of the assembly of particles, and A is a constant. Recent experiments on the compression loading of Pyrex spheres ranging in size from 1/8 to l-in. diam have shown that the size modulus of the fragments is determined by the strain energy at fracture per unit mass, independent of sphere diameter.' The objective of the present investigation has been to determine experimentally whether the size distribution of the product from such a complex comminution process as rod milling is determined only by the energy expended per unit mass independent of feed size. Samples of each Tyler sieve fraction ranging from 4x6 to 48x65 mesh were prepared from crushed Brazilian quartz crystals. One kilogram of each fraction was ground at 60 pct solids in an 8x9 1/4-in. mill containing 17.5 kg of rods (26 rods, 5/8-in.; 10 rods, 3/4-in.; and 5 rods, 7/8-in. diam). In each test, the mill was run at 77 rpm for 15 min. Size distributions were determined by a wet-dry sieving technique. Table I presents the size distribution of the products obtained by grinding each of the size fractions. Because the size distributions are so nearly alike, they are plotted in Fig. 1 by shifting each size distribution for the different feed sizes one screen fraction to the right. Thus, the lowest point in each size distribution represents 400 mesh and each of the other sieve sizes must be shifted accordingly. A single regression line was calculated by combining the data for the six tests, excluding the coarsest feed and the two finest feed fractions. 6 This regression line, which is given by (Y \0.88 where y is the cumulative percentage of material

The pottery department has been aptly described as the "heart of the zinc plant," md every operator of a horizontal-retort plant is acquainted with the fact that good retort practice is the keystone of the smelting process. Since retorts and condensers are clay products, it is obvious that improvements in other branches of the ceramic industry should be observed for possible adoption in the pottery process for zinc smelting. Deaeration of clay bodies is one of the improvements that have become fully, established in many brick and pottery plants. Our investigation of a number of these installations always yielded the same answer—improved practice. Improvement in workability, elimination of laminations, less porosity, greater wet and dry strength, were among the claims put forth for this process. All of these features are exceedingly desirable characteristics in the manufacture of a zinc retort. A preliminary test, which involved truck transportation of deaired slugs over a relatively long distance, did show the value of many of these characteristics in forming the retort. Results from the standpoint of , longer retort life in the smelting furnace were not outstanding. The idea lay dormant for several years but was revived again in 1940, when it was decided to make whatever changes were necessary in the equipment for pottery manufacture to fully demonstrate the process. A number of the manu- facturers of machinery for clay work were asked to submit proposals, and the plan finally adopted was extremely simple and economical. Machine FOR DeaeRRATING Selection of the ''Straight-line'' principle for conversion of the "Wettengel" pug mill to a ''vacuum-extrusion" machine preserved some usable parts of the original equipment, such as the drive mechanism, and main shaft. The converted machine consists of a feed hopper, a compression and shredding zone, a vacuum chamber, and an extrusion barrel, as shown in Fig. I. In operation the clay mix travels from the feed hopper into the compression zone, where it is compressed and finally forced around the tapered cone into the vacuum chamber. As it enters this chamber the clay body is shredded into thin plates, for exFosure to the vacuum. The shredder consists of a hub mounted on the main shaft, to which are bolted segmental sections, each of which carries shredder knives. The compression zone and extrusion barrel function as seals for the vacuum chamber and the shredded clay mix is agitated thoroughly during its exposure to the vacuum. A vacuum pump, equipped with a 3-hp. motor, is attached to this chamber, and maintains 25 to 26 in. vacuum during operation of the mill. (communication to the Secretary*).-When asked to discuss Mr. Feild's paper, I felt most highly complimented to have the privilege of commenting on such a worthy and needed piece of apparatus. In consideration of the importance of the viscosity of blast-furnace slags and the relation existing between the' melting point of a slag and its viscosity, the introduction of this apparatus should be a welcome means or assistant in the study of the physical properties of a slag. Up to the present time, it is A fact that this side of the practical working of the blast furnace has been sadly neglected by those investigating slags. It is easily seen that the fluidity of a slag is of as great importance as its melting point. It is not necessarily true that a slag having a low melting point will have a correspondingly low viscosity or be highly fluid. For example, a slag having a melting point of 1,100° C. may have to be superheated to, say,1,300° C., in order to have as high a fluidity as another slag whose melting point is, say, 1,250° C. The latter in this case would be the more economical. This point has been brought out very nicely by Mr. Feild. Before discussing this paper further, I think it will be well to outline some of the points, a discussion of which may be in order:

VANADIUM is generally spoken of as a rare element; but, even in the light of our resources as known a couple of years ago, this description could be accepted in a qualified sense only. In fact, vanadium is very widely distributed, being a constituent of most clays, while even caustic soda has been shown to contain almost regularly a minute proportion of it, although the quantity in each case is so small as to render impracticable the extraction of the metal there from with profit. The opening-up of a large deposit of vanadium sulphide ore in South America has put a new phase on the commercial outlook of vanadium, the technical value of which for the improvement of steel has been proved by rigorous scientific investigation.

THAT the path of brittle fracture in temper brit-tle steel differs from the path in unembrittled steel has been known for some years1 More recently it has been recognized that alloy steels, at least, display two forms of temper brittleness1 which may be called upper-nose and lower-nose. No experimental evidence has been published, however, to show that the two forms can be distinguished by simple inspection of brittle fractures. Fig. 1 is a photograph of the fractured surface of a V-notch Charpy specimen of SAE 3140 steel in which temper brittleness developed during heat treatment in the lower-nose temperature range.' The steel was austenitized 1 hr at 900°, tempered 1 hr at 675", and embrittled 48 hr at 500°C, with water-quenching after each treatment. The temperature of transition from ductile to brittle fracture in the Charpy test was + 2°C (criterion of transition: 100 pet fibrous). The hardness was Re 25; the austenite grain size ASTM 8. This specimen was broken at 150°C in the standard Charpy test and absorbed 6.6 ft-lb; its fracture was rated 0 pet fibrous. Fig. 1 shows that the fracture appeared rough to the naked eye. At the side of the specimen away from the notch (the side which was in compression during the test), the surface as a whole deviated sharply from a plane. The heats of formation at 273°K of 6 silver-rich Ag-Cd solid solutions and the heat of formation at 78°K of one solid solution have been measured by tin solution calorimetry. The heats of formation are analyzed in terms of the quasichemical theory. If the enthalpy diffel-ence between a hypothetical fcc form and the hcp form of cadmium is taken into account, this analysis does not lead to the conclusion put forth in the literature that electronic effects make significant contributions to the heats of formation of silver-rich Ag-Cd solid solutions. The temperature dependence of the heats of formation is appreciable and negative near 78ºK, but decreases gradually to nearly zero abore 400°K. The relative partial enthalpies per grarn -atom of silver at 541°K and cadmium at 532" and 541°K in tin have also been determined. THE composition range of the silver-rich Ag-Cd solid solutions stable at room temperature extends to about 40 at. pct Cd. Heats of formation of these solid solutions at 308" and 723°K have been measured by solution calorimetry.1,2 Heats of formation for an average temperature of 800°K have also been calculated from vapor pressures.2,3 The heats of formation deviate from the values predicted by the quasichemical theory above about 30 at. pct Cd. This deviation has been attributed to electronic effects at the Brillouin zone boundaries.2 The heats of formation of Ag-Cd alloys are essentially the same at 308", 723", and 800°K; consequently the temperature dependence of the heat of formation d?H/dT = ?Cp is vanishingly small, although from the exothermic heats of formation a negative value would have been expected. In the investigation reported here the heats of formation at 273°K of 6 silver-rich Ag-Cd solid solutions and the heat of formation at 78°K of 1 solid solution have been measured by tin solution calorimetry. The results are analyzed in terms of the quasichemical theory and the dependence of the heats of formation on temperature is discussed. The relative partial enthalpies per gram-atom of silver in tin at 541" and cadmium in tin at 532" and 541°K were obtained in the course of this investigation. The values of the temperature dependence of the relative partial enthalpies per gram-atom of silver in tin derived from the data reported by various investigators2,4-9 are contradictory. The literature contains only a value for 517°K of the relative partial enthalpy per gram-atom of solid cadmium in tin.2 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Samples of Ag-Cd solid solutions were prepared by melting weighed amounts of silver (99.99 pct pure) and cadmium (99.95 pct pure) in graphite crucibles under a flux of molten potassium chloride.10 The solidified ingots were sealed in evacuated Vycor tubes and annealed at 775°K for 10 days. The ingots were swaged and drawn into wires. The wires, sealed in evacuated Pyrex tubes, were held at 725°K for 5 hr and cooled to 365°K at an average rate of 2.5ºK per hr, followed by furnace cooling to room temperature. Chemical analysis of samples taken from different parts of each ingot gave no indication of segregation. Metallographic examination showed the samples to be homogeneous. Samples of the solid solutions or of the component elements were added to tin-rich baths in a calorimeter." At the start of a run the bath consisted of pure tin. Silver was used in the form of wire of 0.01-in. diam as supplied and cadmium in the form of lumps. Gold (99.999 pct pure) was added with the samples in order to reduce the endothermic heat effect of additions of Ag-Cd solid solutions. Samples of only one composition were added in a run and the ratio of the weight of alloy to that of gold was the same in all additions of a given run. In each run several calibrating additions of tin were made from 273°K. The heat contents of tin were calculated from the following equation, which is based on published data:12 (HTºK- H279º) = 6.70 T - 72,300/T + 20 cal/gram-atom; 505°K < T < 650°K The heat effect of each addition was plotted against the average of the sum of the atom fractions of solutes in the solution before and after that addition. The total concentration of solutes at the end of a run was less than 2 at. pct. In this range the heat effect was a linear function of the atom fraction of the solutes. The heat effect at infinite dilution and the composition dependence of the heat effect were obtained from the plots. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Evaluation of Data. The linear dependence on composition of the heat effects of additions suggests that in the dilute range the enthalpy interaction coefficients other than the first-order coefficients of silver, cadmium, and gold are negligible, as shown in a concurrent publication.13 The heat effects at infinite dilution and the values of the composition dependence of the heat effects are listed in Table I.

his volume records the "clay symposium" that featured the geology side of the Annual Meeting of the Institute at St. Louis, February 19-22, 1951. The symposium consisted of four sessions held under the joint sponsorship of the Geology Subdivision and the Industrial Minerals Division AIME and the Society of Economic Geologists. Its main purpose was to define or outline certain problems of clay and laterite genesis, and the papers herein, which were presented at the first three sessions, deal for the most part with individual deposits or special problems. The fourth session was a seminar concerned almost wholly with a discussion of "problems." The discussion follows the papers in the volume. The clay symposium was not the work of an appointed committee. It was thought up and inspired by John J. Collins, who so ably supervised and co- ordinated the mining, geology, and geophysics program for the 1950 annual meeting of the Institute. After requesting Dr. A. F. Frederickson to get material together on clay and laterites for the St. Louis meeting, Mr. Collins visited Dr. Frederickson and discussed this project with him in greater detail. By that time their interest and enthusiasm had spread to others in the field. The Geology Subdivision, the Industrial Minerals Division, and the Society of Economic Geologists by common consent turned over the organization of the program to Dr. Frederickson. Mr. Collins continued in active touch with Dr. Frederickson and gave him every assistance. Dr. E. C. Harder and Dr. W. D. Keller read all the material comprising the symposium, and their comment was made available to Dr. Frederickson, who did much to put papers and discussion in final shape for publication. To the Karl Eilers Memorial Fund--one of the Funds that enables the Institute to publish books of this kind, to the authors of the various papers, to the contributors to the discussion, and to Messrs. Collins and Frederickson the Institute and readers of this book are indebted.

Last November, when the British Educational Mission was visiting this country, letters were sent to the various mining schools asking what arrangements had been made for cooperating with British and. French schools. Of the eleven schools from which replies were received, none had taken any definite steps in this direction. The Colorado School of Mines, though, stated that it was offering scholarships to all men who had served in the U. S. Army and Navy during the war. A letter was also sent to Sir Henry Miers, Vice-chancellor of the University of Manchester, who was the head of the British Mission. He replied as follows: "In my opinion the mining profession is second to none in the responsibility of the duties which it involves or to which it leads in all parts of the world; also it is a. profession in which the student or teacher has much to gain by migrating to foreign countries. This applies in a special degree to British students coming to America where they will be able to enlarge their views by a widened experience. We (the Mission) have everywhere found the most, cordial acceptance of such proposals. Several of the British Universities have recently instituted a new doctorate of philosophy attainable after 2 or 3 years course of advanced study; this scheme includes Oxford and Manchester. The conditions admitting to the degree course are that the applicant should be a graduate of an approved University and should show evidence that he is qualified to pursue the course which lie proposes." In a conversation with Prof. Alfred C. Lane, of Tufts College, Sir Henry Miers said that students from Great Britain should be most easily attracted to America, both to universities and colleges and technological institutions.. He doubts, however, whether Great Britain can offer America, in this respect, as much as America can offer her. Prof. Lane, though, is quite sure that, especially for geologists, there is much to be

During the year 1945, the total number of wells drilled in Ohio, including the. non¬productive wells, was 1034. For the 10-year period ending with 1945, the average completions per year were 1125, the least number being 910 in 1938, and the maximum 1561 in 1941. The proportion of dry holes in 1945 was 37 per cent?about the same as for the year 1944 but exceeding the 10-year average, which was 34 per cent. The number of oil wells completed exceeded the number drilled in 1944 by about 30 per cent, the average initial per well being the same in both years. Gas-well completions were approximately 10 per Cent less than in 1944, with the average initial per well about 5 per cent greater. The difference in number of oil and gas wells in the two years was in Berea and Clinton completions, as the number of oil wells increased about 30 per cent, owing to greater activity in the two sands named, while the number of gas wells decreased because of fewer completions therein.

The production of lightweight aggregates in Oregon is a new industry, and, like all new enterprises, it is suffering from growing pains characterized by numerous, small operations some of which flourish for a short time and then cease altogether. Norinally all industrial mineral products are produced in a highly competitive atmosphere. At the present time this condition does not exist to a very marked degree in the state because as yet producers have not saturated the constantly expanding market. This paper has been prepared with the intention of outlining very briefly the current status of the various products now heing used as lightweight aggregates in Oregon. The present piche will surely change, perhaps quite radically within even a short space of time. Lightweight Aggregates Used in the Northwest PUMICE Interest in Oregon pumice is not new. Deposits are abundant. Successful development, however, dates only from 1946. During 1948 a total of nine operations was engaged in full or part-time production of aggregate. The postwar building boom and increased public consciousness regarding the value of insulation are the immediate reasons behind the current development. Just how firmly this production of pumice aggregate may be established is something which cannot be foretold at the present time. Much will depend upon how successfully the pumice aggregate construction already installed stands the test of time. Some fine pumice aggregate products have been made and it seems probable that because of its unique properties a certain demand for pumice aggregate will continue in the future. Fire-proof, rodent-proof, decay-resistant properties supplement the lightness in weight and insulation properties of pumice aggregate products in rendering them particularly ideal for many types of construction. In addition there has been fabrication in the form of reinforced fence posts, street markers, and similar products of a specialized-product nature and these are not to be overlooked in terms of future production. Also pertinent to how soundlj pumice aggregate production is established will be possible future competition with other lightweight aggregates. However, this situation will be governed largely by competitive costs of production and marketing. For its present use, which is almost exclusively limited to the manufacturing of building blocks, the market for Oregon pumice aggregate has been extended from the mining area around Rend and Chemult to points as far distant as San Francisco and Seattle. Naturally enough the bulk of the production goes to the Portland and eastern Oregon consumers. Shipments are made by both rail and truck. Early in 1947 the State Department of Geology and Mineral Industries made a canvass of all pumice producers in the state. The production for 1956 amounted to 26,614 cu yd and was valued at $13,649 at the plants. The United States Bureau of Mines estimates the production for 1947 as 33,240 short tons valued at $111,380. This is roughly 65,000 cu yd. No data are available for the 1948 production but it is understood to exceed that for 1947. The Oregon pumice occurrences originated largely from the eruption of Mount Mazama, the name of the formerly active volcano and the location of Crater Lake. Other lesser volcanoes throughout the area contributed to the present occurrences, however, and it has been estimated by Moore&apos; that the pumice deposits cover an area of some 3500 square miles. This area lies east of Crater Lake between Bend and Klamath Falls and embraces the southern portion of Deschutes County, the northern part of Klamath County, and the northwest corner of Lake County. Thickness of the pumice ranges from thin skims to local thicknesses of as much as 30 to 40 ft. Fragment size also varies greatly. Any attempt to describe the situation by giving screen analyses would be confusing because of the wide variations to be found in all area of this size. The picture can best be summed up by stating that places showing great variations in fragment size can be found if a search for extremes is made. For mining purposes in connection with aggregate production, it call be stated that miles and miles of pumice exist in which the fragrnent sizes range from an inch or so downward. The usual color of the pumice is a light gray to off-white. A typical pumice analysis shows a silica content of about 69 pct, alumina 15 pct, and sodium oxide about 5 pct. Potash, lime, and water are the next three most abundant constituents, running just a little over 2 pct each. Iron oxides are fairly constant at 2.75 pct. Titanium, manganese, magnesium, and phosphorus occur in amounts of less than 1 pct. All of the foregoing substances are combined as a glass exhibiting cellular structure. The weight of crushed but otherwise pit-run (undried) pumice runs around 1100 Ib per cu yd according to figures furnished by various producers. The ancit-process of the Eschweiler Bergwerks-Verein, an affiliate Company of ARBED S.A., Luxembourg, was developed in its principles by the Dutch State Mines, Limburg, in the mid-50&apos;s with the aim of producing a smokeless domestic fuel on the basis of low volatile hard coal. In 1967, the EBV erected a 10 t/h large- size pilot plant along these principles in the Aachen mining district and further developed the acquired know-how. In hardly 10 years more than 650 000 t of ancit briquettes with unit weights between 17 and 100 grams were produced and in the meantime stream rates of over 85 % of the yearly utilization hours have been reached. In more than 10 blast furnace trial runs involving substitution rates up to 100 p. c. ancit have proved the suitability of ancit as a metallurgical fuel both for a burden with a high and a poor iron content. Construction work for a minor process-step to enable processing of coal with a higher content of volatile matters is finished and first results are expected by summer this year. A pilot plant with a 30 t/h capacity working on a low-volatile coal basis is being planned. Engineering and construction are supervised by MecanARBED. Luxembourg, as responsible contractors.

EVERY user of steel should ask himself whether or not he is taking full advantage of the discoveries of the steel metallurgists during the last few years, or is merely buying grades that looked to be the best five or ten years ago for various specific purposes and have since proved perfectly satisfactory in his plant. If he has not kept abreast of the times, then it is probable that something better has been developed, or something just as good that costs less. Though this article will have to do with steel for high-temperature applications primarily, marked advances have been made in steels for other purposes as well.

THIS necessarily brief sketch will attempt to summarize the high lights of perhaps the best meeting so far held by the Iron and Steel Division. All sessions were well attended and the discussion was vigorous and of a high order. The technical sessions opened. on Tuesday morning. "Precipitation Hardening of Copper Steels" was discussed by Cyril S. Smith and Earl W. Palmer, and dealt with steel with a 1 per cent copper content. Discussion brought out that there were no fabricating difficulties, but that the surface might be somewhat checked due to intergranular penetration of copper which could be easily taken care of. Probable advantages of steels of this type for high temperatures were pointed out. "An Improved Nickel-chromium Hardened Chilled Cast Iron," by J. S. Vanick, described a wear-resistant cast iron and evoked a lively discussion.
