A series of cross-hole acoustic measurements have been performed in a columnar-jointed basaltic rock mass around an underground opening mined by the drill-and-blast method. The purposes of the test program were: to evaluate the rock mass characteristics around the opening; to determine the zone of blast damage; and to evaluate seismic methods for anomaly detection ahead of mining in this type of rock. The cross-hole measurements were made between four 76-mm diameter horizon- tal boreholes diamond-drilled 12 m into a wall of the underground opening. Repetitive pulses of compressional (P) and shear (S) waves of frequencies in the range 3 kHz-100 kHz were propagated from a transmitter sonde through the rock mass to a receiver sonde, both of which were clamped hydraulically to the borehole wall. After amplification the received P- and S-wave signals were digitized at the surface by a digital oscilloscope and stored on floppy discs. The results indicate considerable reductions in P- and S-wave velocities at distances less than 2 m from the face. Clearly these low values are associated with blast damage. Beyond 2 m, the velocities in a vertical direction indicate almost constant values. The velocities in the horizontal direction beyond 2 m appeared erratic, but showed a general tendency to increase as a function of distance from the face. Their maximum values remained, however, still lower in value than the corresponding velocities in the vertical direction. Near the face, the differences in velocities were considerably greater: with horizontal velocities considerably lower in value than those vertical. Results of the spectral analyses of the received signals indicated that Q-values were strongly influenced by the vertically- oriented sets of joints. Only for waves travelling in the vertical direction was the effect observed of the blast-damaged zone immediately around the opening. The acoustic data obtained are clearly indicative of an anisotropic jointed rock mass, with a greater intensity of jointing for travel paths in the horizontal than the vertical direction. The vertical, columnar joints are probably less tightly closed than those oriented in the horizontal plane.

Within the past few months I have had occasion to visit and examine the area of country in Gunnison county locally called the Gold Belt and extending from the Cebolla river on the west to the head of Taylor Park and the Sawatch range on the east. The region including the "belt" may be hided topographically into two parts, a northern and a southern one. The former is characterized by lofty mountains and deep canons, with occasional parks and wide valleys. Most of it is included in the granitic system of the Sawatch range, with local patches of the Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks, more or less traversed by great bodies of porphyry and other eruptive rocks. The southern portion, on the other hand, is characterized by comparatively low, rounded hills of schist and sahistose gneisses, underlain by coarse, massive granite, which outcrops locally in small, and sometimes in large, patches. These hills also sometimes form table-lands by reason of overflows of lavas, such as andesitic breccia, rhyolite, trachyte and basalt. The leading geological feature is that of a schistose area of width and extent unusual for Colorado. These schists and gneisses are of pre-Cambrian age; but whether assignable to the Algonkian or to some older system has not been determined. The granite which occasionally outcrops from beneath these schists is, I think, of true eruptive character, since its mode of occurrence indicates a once molten, or at least highly viscous or plastic, condition. Thus, we may observe, included in its mass, numerous fragments of schist, almost like a coarse, volcanic breccia. Again, at its immediate contact with the schists, which often stand vertically upon it, the pediments of the latter are fused into the granite, and granite tongues and veins run up amongst the schists, as only a molten or viscous

NEW economic forces are at work in the petroleum industry.. In order to visualize these forces and clearly see their bearing on the producer, refiner and marketer, it is necessary to see in perspective the economic evolution of the business. For several decades prior to 1913 the outstanding feature of the petroleum industry was a trend toward integration, culminating in a huge combine, the Standard Oil Co. An important aspect of this integrative trend, however, was its concentration on the combination aid control of refining and marketing, leaving crude oil production, for the most part, to the exigencies. of small-unit competition. It is a noteworthy coincidence that during this era the law of oil and gas was formulated and applied, whereby these substances had to be reduced to possession to establish ownership; and the forces of competition in crude oil production were thereby intensified. It was to the interest of an industry, safeguarded in its control of manufacturing and markets, to have supply stimulated by legal convention as well as by individual initiative in order that the growing demand could be met without interruption. And so over-production of crude oil during this era was no handicap, but rather an aid, to the progress of the industry.

A PAPER prepared by James A. Adams, development engineer of the fitline & Smelter Supply Co., and presented at the last Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E. in New York City, de- scribed a new automatic pulp density controller which has had a most favorable reception. Manual control has until now been the universal practice in spite of its shortcomings; samples of pulp for density determination were often improperly taken, and only at the operator's convenience, so that the trend in density changes was frequently missed, and the grinding circuit al- lowed to operate under something less than the most efficient conditions.

M ODERN metallurgy properly belongs to this century. The great advance made in this science is directly attributable to the discovery of the Roentgen rays. Application of the results of this discovery, together with the more recent corroborating studies in electronic diffraction have definitely and for all time established this science. Metallurgists today speak with familiarity of the atoms of the different metals in terms of their orientation, atomic volumes, lattice structures, dimensional lattice constants distance of nearest approach, and the like. One matter of profound interest, which is quite staggering to the imagination of the human mind, is the enormity of the number of atoms even in a small particle of metal. As an illustration, let us compute the number of atoms in the volume of one cubic centimeter in a single grain of absolutely pure copper. Eighteen and a fraction cubic centimeters equal the volume of one cubic inch.

The effect of direct and alternating currents on the quench aging behavior in an Al-4 pct Cu alloy has been investigated by use of resistivity measurements. The reaction rate increases with direct current density in the investigated range of 1000 to 3000 amps per sq cm. Alternating current of a specific frequency is observed to decrease the reaction rate by a factor of about two. ErDMANN-JESNITZER et al.,1,2 investigated the effect of direct and alternating current on the quench and strain aging behavior of low-carbon iron. In both cases they observed that direct current accelerates the aging reaction and that an alternating current can completely inhibit the aging process. The purpose of the present research was to investigate these phenomena in the quench aging behavior of an Al-4 pct Cu alloy and to determine the correlation, if any, between the increase in the observed reaction rate and possible heating effects accompanying the aging with direct current. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The aluminum-base alloy used in this investigation contained 3.98 wt pct Cu (1.72 at. pct) with impurities of 0.003 pct Si, 0.002 pct Fe, and 0.001 pct Mg. The alloy was rolled into a ribbon about 0.36 mm thick and 3.7 mm wide. The ribbon was split end from end with the ends being used as electrical contacts and the central unsplit section, about 5.3 cm in length, serving as the specimen. Solution treatment was accomplished by quenching from a salt bath at 520° ± 2°C into water at 25° ±0.5°C; the specimen was immediately transferred to a liquid nitrogen bath. All aging was done at 75° ± 0.2°C in a rapidly stirred ethylene glycol bath. Resistivity measurements were made by the double potentio-metric method employing a standard resistor; for purposes of convenience, the resistance measurements were made at 77°K. The transfer of the specimen from the aging bath to a liquid nitrogen dewar was accomplished in less than 1 sec. The aging kinteics were studied with the specimen being aged under the influence of direct current, alternating current, and without any type of current. The amount of heating caused by direct currents was investigated by soldering a thermocouple on the specimen surface and measuring the temperature change after applying various current densities. The temperature was observed to increase (from 75°C, the aging temperature) about 0.8°, 3.0°, and 8.5°C with direct currents of 1000, 2000, and 3000 amp per sq cm, respectively. When employing alternating current, the circuit was monitored with an oscilloscope and adjustments made to produce a normal sine-wave pattern. RESULTS Prior investigations3'4 in the aging characteristics of A1-4 wt pct Cu have shown that the resistivity initially increases, reaches a maximum, and then decreases to values significantly lower than the as-quenched resistivity. This type of behavior is seen in Fig. 1 which shows the resistivity at 77°K as a function of aging time at 75°C observed in this investigation. At this aging temperature, the resistivity maximum is seen to occur in about 1 to 1-1/2 min and it further decreases to the as-quenched value in about 24 min. The behavior observed with the application of direct currents of 1000, 2000, and 3000 amp per sq cm during aging is shown in Fig. 2. With increasing current densities, (+) ?pmax decreases and the rate of the aging process increases. The time necessary to reach the as-quenched resistivity value decreases from 24 min for aging without current to about 16, 10, and 7 min for aging with 1000, 2000, and 3000 amp per sq cm direct current, respectively. Recent discovery at Mount Isa of copper mineralization in commercial amount at a depth of 1000 ft., coinciding with downward termination of ore at about the same depth within the larger silver-lead-zinc lenses that have been the standby of Mount Isa's production to date, has been cited as an example in support of mineral zoning. A previous paper by the author and Graham Hall1 furnished a detailed description of the geology of the ore at Mount Isa as exposed up to that time, but necessarily dealt mainly with the silver-lead-zinc mineralization. Most of the geologic facts that constitute the first half of the present paper were set forth in the previous one in much greater detail, with full supporting evidence for the facts cited. The large amount of underground development (approximately 20 miles) and the extensive exploration carried out by diamond drilling (100,000 ft.) at Mount Isa, added to extensive microscope work conducted over a period of years, both by the company's staff and by others, had made possible the calculation within fairly close limits of mineralogical composition of the principal mineralized block of ground down to 1000-ft. depth, and had established closely the mineral succession, with reasons for deposition of the various minerals in the patterns now occupied by them. The geologic facts as outlined in the previous paper remain as stated; but because substantial development within the new copper ore body and further exploratory diamond drilling within the new silver-lead-zinc area (Racecourse) have taken place since that paper was written, statements and figures relating to those two areas in the present paper supersede those furnished in the previous one. The recent work likewise has established more clearly the paragenetic relationship between the chalco-pyrite and galena. Evidence confirming the relationship is furnished in the present paper. Twelve years ago, some coal-mine operators, mining engineers, oil and gas operators, Bureau of Mines engineers, geologists and state mine inspectors met in Pittsburgh, Pa. to discuss and solve if possible, the problems in connection with the drilling of oil and gas wells through or near coal mines and through the future coal reserves. Regulations were drafted and presented by O. P. Hood and A. G. Heggem of the Bureau of Mines.' . There was considerable discussion of the various articles, practically all of which appear in Bulletin 65, but the interest aroused at that meeting was short lived. Practically none of the important coal-producing states gave the matter the consideration it should have received. Notwithstanding the marked progress in safety work, coal mines still have an unenviable reputation for mine explosions. Our mining laws have become stricter and the enforcement, especially in Pennsylvania, more rigid, but what good will come from a rigid enforcement of the mining laws if some source of danger exists all around the mines, over which the operators have no control ? It is hardly necessary to recite all the cases of natural-gas explosions published in Bulletin 65, but with some of them I am especially familiar. In 1912, while visiting the Miners' Hospital, at Fairmont, W. Va., my attention was called to a patient swathed in in bandages so that no part of his face and hands were visible. He had not been told that his two sons, mere boys, had died of the burns they had received in the same accident—explosion due to natural gas leaking into a country mine at Peora, Harrison Co., W. Va.

IN the silicothermic reduction of magnesia, burned dolomite is treated with high grade ferrosilicon in an evacuated steel retort at temperatures between 1150° and 1200°C. The following reaction is assumed to occur MgO + CaO + 1/2 Si (Fe) - Mg(g) +- & Ca,SiO, + Fe with the equilibrium constant on the basis of thermodynamic data for the substances involved and assuming unit activity for all solid constituents, Kubaschewski and Evans' calculated the magnesium pressure as a function of temperature logp,, (mmHg) = 15.06-1.61 T- log T- 13,16O/T. Pidgeon and King," who measured the magnesium pressure by means of a flow method, found values about three times the calculated ones. This may be caused by uncertainties in the thermodynamic data, but may also be caused by the formation of other reaction products, such as Ca,SiO,, which is known to be the stable silicate in equilibrium with lime. Whatever the exact reaction may be, it is evident that as long as all other factors are maintained constant the magnesium pressure will vary with the silicon activity, viz: p,, = &,. (p,,) ", where (p,,)" is the magnesium pressure by the reduction with silicon of unit activity. In the present investigation, p,,, was therefore measured for various grades of ferrosilicon and their silicon activities were calculated. The experimental method was similar to that used by Pidgeon and King. Briquettes of burned dolomite and Fe-Si alloys were placed in a 1 in. heat resistant steel tube and were heated to 1200°C. By means of a flow of purified hydrogen, the magnesium vapor was swept into a condenser filled with steel wool. From the amounts of hydrogen used and magnesium condensed the magnesium partial pressure was calculated. First a tube of 28 pct Cr steel, and later a tube of Kanthal D (a ferrous alloy with 22.6 pct Cr, 2 pct Co, and 4.5 pct Al), was used as a heat resistant tube. The latter tube showed the best heat resistance. The dolomite used had the following composition: 43.6 pct MgO, 55.5 pct CaO, 0.2 pct K,O + NalO, 0.2 pct Fe,O,, and 0.3 pct insoluble. The ferrosilicons were prepared from 98 pct Si of technical grade (0.7 pct Al, 0.3 pct Ca, and 1 pct Fe) by melting with various amounts of electrolytic iron of high purity. The alloys thus obtained were analyzed on their iron and silicon contents, which added up to between 99 and 100 pct. The amounts of reactants were chosen so that there would always be an excess of the oxides, and the average decrease in silicon content during the experiments would be about 1 pct. Most of the reaction occurred in the part of the reaction mixture facing the gas flow. The change in the silicon concentration in the part facing the condenser was, therefore, negligible. A treatment is given of the transient pressure behavior of a well located at the center of a circular region surrounded by a radial discontinuity. On either side of the discontinuity, the values of permeability, viscosity, compressibility and porosity are uniform but may be different from those on the other side of the discontinuity. The results are obtained by solving a pair of finite difference equations. The numerical solution to these equations is obtained using a digital computer. The results are compared with previously published, approximated analytical solutions to the same problem. Solutions, presented graphically, show pressure decline for constant rate fluid production. The range of variables studied include dimensionless time from '0.001 to 100 and storage capacity ratio from 0.001 to 1,000. The well behaves as if it were in an infinite reservoir for dimensionless times less than 0.25. Reservoir properties near the well can be estimated in the usual manner. An overlay technique is used to match an experimental curve with one of the theoretical curves. It is possible to estimate the distance to a discontinuity by substituting the actual time t and the corresponding dimensionless time tD at which a match occurs into the equation a = (0.000264 tk1/tD , µ1 cI)I/2 where kI/ I µI cI is the diffusivity near the well, and may be estimated from data taken at early time. Several buildup curves are computed. These curves show that for early shut-in times, correct values for transmissibility are obtained from conventional analysis. However, erroneous values of static reservoir Pressure are obtained unless data at large shut-in times are taken. INTRODUCTION A mathematical treatment of the transient pressure response of a well located at the center of a region bounded by a circular discontinuity is given. Within a region (Fig. 20) the properties of both the rock and the fluid are considered to be constant on either side of the discontinuity. While these properties are considered constant, they may be different on opposite sides of the discontinuity. A discontinuity of this type could be a fluid-fluid contact or a sudden change in rock characteristics such as thickness, porosity or permeability. Analytical solutions to this problem are available. 1-3 However, they are so involved that they are of little practical use. An approximate solutionl is available but the range of times over which it is valid has not been specified. A numerical solution to a pair of finite difference equations is used to obtain the solution given in this paper. PREVIOUS WORK One of the first solutions to the problem was published by William Hurst.1 Hurst considered unsteady-state flow of fluids through two sands in series with different mobilities in each sand. He used Laplace transforms to obtain a solution for a single well located at the center of the circle enclosing the first of the two sands. Although Australia is the world's second biggest producer of iron ore, the last few years have not been easy for companies in Western Australia's Pilbara region (see map) where more than 90% of the nation's iron ore is produced. For at least two years, the industry has been plagued by dwindling markets abroad, production-crippling strikes at home, skyrocketing costs (well above the official 13% annual inflation rate), an acute shortage of investment capital, increasingly ferocious competition from foreign iron ore producers-and, as if all this weren't enough, by an over-valued currency that has caused incalculable damage not only to iron ore producers but to the entire mining industry of Australia. (This last problem was mitigated less than two months ago, on November 28, 1976, when the Australian dollar was devalued by a whopping 17 1/2%.)

IN 1914 the writer and K. L. Kithil announced, through Bulletin 70 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, that the United States possessed the largest deposits of radium-bearing ore in the world. At that time a small amount of this ore was being, mined and shipped to Europe, and one company was preparing to start the extraction and recovery of radium in this country. The importance of our carnotite deposits in Colorado and Utah up to the publication of Bulletin 70 was not, however, appreciated by anyone.. At that time the total supply of radium in the world was about 10 g., calculated as element, and when I estimated that at least 100 g. of radium element, and probably 200 g., would be produced from our carnotite deposits, there was a considerable amount of skepticism. Up to the present time almost 200 g. have come from this ore, and some writers put this figure a little higher. Uranium ore was found in the copper mines of the Union Minière du Haut-Katanga at Luiswishi in 1913. Later discoveries were made at other places in the Belgian Congo, and the Katanga ores now represent the largest supply of radium-bearing ore in the world. In fact, since 1923 very little radium has been produced from American carnotite, the Katanga ore representing practically the world's supply of. radium since that date.

INSTANTANEOUS outbursts of gas in underground workings are similar in effect to great blasts of explosives, but without heat effects. Fortunately they occur only in a few localities in exceptional coal fields of the world and under exceptional geologic conditions. Such violent outbursts should not be compared with the ordinary outflows of gas into coal mines or with explosions of gas and dust. The phenomenon is essentially one of gas held in circumscribed areas under very high pressure and as a mining face or heading approaches such a place and the mining excavation sufficiently weakens the natural surrounding dam or shell, this is burst by the pressure just as by the discharge of a mass of explosives. The outbursts, so far as known to the writer, have been confined to coal beds and have not occurred in other mineral deposits. Hence, as discussed later, he believes that it is the relation of the gases to the coal material that is a factor in conjunction with others in producing conditions which permit the phenomena to occur when mining is done. The gases in most instantaneous outbursts have been hydrocarbon gases but in two coal fields they have been definitely found to be chiefly or wholly carbon dioxide. One of these localities in which CO2 outbursts have been frequent and have caused loss of life is in the southern part of the Gard basin, near Alais, in southern France. In 1919, the writer visited the Fontaine mine in this field the day following the occurrence of an outburst by which two men were smothered by carbon dioxide and fine dust. After 24 hr. the CO2 had not been entirely removed by the ventilating current. Occasional outbursts of CO2 have also occurred in other small basins in France, causing accidents, as in Puy-de-Dome. However, mines in the Gard basin, north of those in which CO2 outbursts have occurred, have experienced hydrocarbon gas outbursts.

THE works of the Ore Knob Copper Company are situated in the county of Ashe in the northwestern part of the State of North Carolina, about ten miles from the Virginia line, at an elevation of 4600 feet above the sea. The nearest railroad station is at Marion, Smythe County, Virginia, about forty-five miles distant. The roads from the railroad to the works have been constructed by the company for the transportation of their material, and are very hilly, and in certain seasons of the year in bad repair. Transportation is therefore always limited and never easy, although it is done by contract at a very low price. The main difficulty with the transportation is not so much its cost as the fact that it puts a limit to the production of the works. These unfavorable conditions make it necessary for the owners of the mine to smelt their ores and to send to market nothing except the metal, which alone will bear the cost of transportation. The mine was opened previous to 1860, but has only been worked systematically during the last five or six years. The vein is a fissure vein from ten to twenty feet in thickness in the gneiss of the

FROM the very inception of the price-control experiment in the bituminous-coal industry, the problem of price differentials was of major importance. The greatest objection to be brought against the present methods for estimating phosphorus in iron and steel, is the time consumed in the operation. The following method, originated and perfected by Mr. E. D. Campbell, assistant in the chemical laboratory of the University of Michigan, will, 1 think, if carefully followed out, give results that are sufficiently accurate for technical purposes, and will give them in less time than they can be obtained by any other process. The process consists in comparing the color obtained by the action of stannous chloride upon a solution of the phospho-molybdate precipitate obtained from the solution of iron or steel, with that obtained from a standard solution of molybdie acid which represents a given amount of phosphorus. The operation is as follows : Take of ordinary steel 1 grm. and treat as in any of the wellknown processes until the phosphorus is precipitated as ammoniumphospho-molybdate. When precipitated, the phospho-molybdate precipitate is filtered out, thoroughly washed with an acid solution of ammonium nitrate, and, finally, twice with water, to remove most of the ammonium nitrate. The precipitate is then dissolved in about 1 c. c. of 10 per cent. potassium hydrate, which is let fall drop by drop on the filter till the precipitate is dissolved ; the filter is now washed with about 25 or 30 c. c. of water, and the potassium hydrate solution, which now consists of 25-32 c. c. of solution, is boiled until the peculiar frothy appearance, which first appears on boiling, is entirely gone. The solution is then cooled until perfectly cold, and about 10 or 15 c. c. of strong hydrochloric acid added ; if the solution is kept cold this will form no precipitate, but a light yellow or colorless solution. The solution is now ready for the addition of stannous chloride, and the subsequent comparison of color produced with that obtained from the standard molybdie acid. The comparison is made in tubes that are calibrated like carbon-tubes, but which are larger, about 5/8-inch bore, and graduated to 100 c. c.; this makes them about 18 inches long. Coal-oil mixture (COM) combustion technology is regarded by the US Department of Energy (DOE) as near term and Potentially applicable to existing utility and industrial steam generators and for injection into blast furnaces. From work done previously, it has been established that COM can be burned in existing boilers and blast furnaces. Therefore, the issues being addressed by the current DOE program are: (1) determination of best available technology to achieve environmentally acceptable long-term reliable operation and (2) determination of applications for which COM can be utilized economically. Some of the technological options have begun to be determined by projects already under way. However, many projects are still in the early stages of development.
