Iron oxides are unique in that they are the only significant colored mineral found in a natural state suitable for use as a pigment after it has been pulverized to pigmentary size. The current world production of iron oxide pig¬ments is estimated by the author to be between 450,000 and 550,000 tons based on 1969 data. The fact that highly colored natural deposits of iron ore are found throughout the world ac¬counts for its use in prehistoric man's artistic cave paintings. These early artists did not realize that they had established man's first paint test fence which now has some 20,000 years of exposure. In addition to abundance, constituting about 7 % of the earth's crust, iron oxides have the advantages of low cost, permanency, and are not toxic. Through the centuries, succeeding civilizations have utilized iron oxides as a major source for decoration and protection when coloring was desired. In the last century the chemical industry has improved on nature by developing a complete range of synthetic iron oxide pigments which surpass the pigments pro¬duced from natural iron ores in uniformity, color quality, and chemical purity. In the United States alone, the combined production of natural and synthetic iron oxides produced sales of over $28,000,000 in 1970 (Stipp, 1970). Nomenclature With the increasing importance of the syn¬thetic iron oxides it is necessary to make a distinction between the natural or mineral pig¬ments and the synthetic pigments. Natural pigments are those products which are derived from selected ores and should not be confused with iron ores mined for steel production. Iron ores that are mined for steel must be capable of being mined and reduced to iron on a com¬mercial basis. These ores are selected on the basis of iron content and processing economics. It is therefore unusual when iron ores for steel production are suitable for use as mineral pig¬ments. Natural pigment ore sources are se¬lected for their special physical-chemical prop¬erties and can command a premium price. Synthetic pigments, and in this instance iron oxides, are those pigments produced from basic chemicals. Through chemical synthesis pig¬mentary sized particles are produced as opposed to comminution, the major procedure common to all natural iron oxide pigments.

NORMALLY, the Britannia ore mixture contains chalcopyrite and pyrite as the chief sulfide minerals, together with minor amounts of gold and silver and a low zinc content. Reduction is accomplished by jaw crushers underground, followed at the concentrating plant by Symons cone crushers, rolls, and ball mills. The standard flotation practice, evolved during several years of experimentation, provided for bulk flotation of the two sulfides, after primary grinding to only approximately 35 mesh, followed by regrinding of the bulk concentrate, with subsequent separation of the chalcopyrite and pyrite to make a marketable concentrate of each mineral. This so-called standard milling practice has previously been described in detail in U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6619. A modification will he discussed here. In the face of a constantly increasing world surplus of copper and a steadily falling price during 1930 and 1931, it was obviously undesirable to continue unprofitable production of large quantities of this metal. The kinetics of copper cementation on rotating disks of body and tear-top beverage can aluminum alloys were studied as a function of temperature and copper ion concentration. Both alloys followed the two-step kinetic regions, an initially slow rate followed by an enhanced rate. Experimental activation energy determinations (9.04 to 19.62 kJ/mol) indicated that ionic diffusion controlled the reaction mechanism between 20° and 60°C. At low temperatures (< 20°C), the system appeared to be controlled by the presence of an aluminum oxide surface film. The results of this study showed that cementation kinetics for the beverage can aluminum alloys are similar to those for pure aluminum. It was also found that the chemical removal of the oxide layer is less important for the alloys than /or the pure aluminum system. The characteristics of the resultant copper deposits were studied under a scanning electron microscope, and the reaction kinetics seemed to depend strongly on the nature and morphology of the deposits. In addition, maximum rates occurred when the deposit structures were fine feathery dendrites.

The temperature, strain rate, and orientation deDendence of defbrnzation of single-crystal MgAg has been examined. The crystals exhibit a tendency to single glide and little or no hardening at 25°C for many orientations. A much higher hardening rate is observed when multiple glide occurs, such as can be initiated by surface defects. The tendency for easy glide becomes less dependent on surface preparation and orientation as T — 100°C and bars so tested often fail after one-dimensional necking-. At T > 200°C (transition temperature for single-crystal notch sensitivity and poly crystalline ductility) single glide diminishes and two-dirnensionul necking begins. The crystals do not strictly obey a critical resolved shear stress law, but show the influence of {loo) cracks in determining the slip mode. The results are correlated with the difficulty of sciperdzslocation intersection and semibrittle behavior of this compound in single-crystal and poly crystalline form. Comparisons are made with the slip selection mode observed in tungsten, with the reported observations of easy glide in bee metals. and with the mechanical behavior of poly crystalline MgAg. PREVIOUS work on tensile deformation of polycrys-talline MgAgl and bending deformation of single-crystal MgAg2 has shown that the compound is semi-brittle (i.e., notch and grain boundary brittle). If this semibrittleness is supposed to result from the difficulty of multiple glide (associated with the problems of superdislocation intersection) one might expect single crystals deformed in tension to show pronounced single glide and strong orientation dependence of hardening rate. These experiments were done to examine this supposition and to study the tensile deformation of a highly ordered system which may be considered bcc if the difference between the two kinds of atoms is ignored (actual structure: CsC1). EXPERIMENTAL Single-crystal ingots were grown by directional freezing as previously described.&apos; These ingots were sliced into a by a by 2 in, rectangular bars by electric discharge machining, then round tensile bars were conventionally machined to 1/8-in.-diam by 1-in.-long reduced section. The bars were typically tested without an anneal because of the problem of magnesium vapor loss and they were typically tested as mechanically polished. The analyses are within the same limits as those reported earlier; i.e., the average composition for each specimen is within 0.5 at. pct of stoichiometry, while the total range from end to end in a given specimen varies from 0.7 to 1.4 at, pct. There has been no indication in the results of any variation in slip or fracture mode attributable to the composition fluctuations. The slip systems were determined by two-surface analysis of the bars after testing to failure at room temperature. Single glide was so dominant that there was little difficulty in identification of the dominant slip system even though the tensile elongation to failure often approached 7 to 8 pct in room-tempera- ture tests. Elevated-temperature testing was done in a silicone oil bath and low-temperature testing was done in liquid Np or a dry-ice bath. All stress measurements are reported as engineering stress unless otherwise specified, and crosshead travel is used as the strain measurement. RESULTS The tendency toward single glide is best seen in the pictures, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, which depict deformation at fracture as a function of test temperature. While it is possible to find regions of secondary slip by careful microscopy, such regions are very small. The development of a ribbon-shaped configuration from an initially round section bar pulled at 100°C is typical, occurred by single glide, and illustrates the degree to which such glide continues. At temperatures =100°C the bars typically show elongation of 20 to 50 pct by predominently single glide. Despite the large elongation, fracture even at 150°C occurs in a brittle mode, Fig. 2, in the sense that it is an abrupt failure which shows no discernible necking in the second dimension of the bar&apos;s cross section (i.e., there is no appreciable action of any slip modes which would decrease the broad dimension of the cross section). Near 200°C the fracture mode changes slightly. Although most of the sample extension is by single glide, after the bar develops the characteristic ribbon shape it begins to neck in the second (i.e., broad) cross-sectional dimension. The bar becomes very thin in the "necked down" region, Fig. 3, and the reduction in area approaches 100 pct. Often there oc-

THERE are three chief production zones of tungsten ore in China. In the Province of Kiangsi mines are located at Kanchow, East River, and West River. Their combined production is understood to amount to 300 to 350 tons of ore per month, and their original exportation is made through the port of Kiukiang, largely to Shanghai. The second zone is in Kwangtung Province, the mines there being at Tayulin. Produc-tion reaches about 200 tons per month and cargo is gen-erally exported through the port of Hong Kong. In the Province of Hunan approximately 25 tons of ore are produced monthly in the mines at Ton-on. Tungsten ore from Kiangsi and Kwangtung Prov-inces is generally about 70 per cent WO, (tungstic acid), while that from Hunan is of lower quality, run-ning about 65 per cent WO3. Kiangsi ore is received from the mines in 100-1b. and Hunan in 224-lb. gunny sacks. No repacking is done except as it is made neces-sary by the condition of the sacks. Kiangsi Province contains the Chinese districts pro-ducing the largest amount of salable wolframite or tungsten. Many districts west and south of Kiangsi have been found to have wolframite deposits.-Com-merce Reports.

THE main purpose of the present note is to provide further information on the effect of orientation on strain-induced grain boundary migration in sheet material. A secondary purpose is to draw attention to the presence of a possible (hkl) dependent surface energy driving force, when the two grains of a bicrystal specimen have different (hk2) planes at the gas-metal interface, and to suggest means of eliminating this effect from the strain effect. If two grains A and B of a bicrystal have specific surface energies ? A and ? B respectively, there exists a driving force for grain boundary migration equal to 2(? B - ? A)/t, where t is the thickness of the specimen.&apos; When t is quite small and the residual strain energy densities €A and €B of grains A and B, respectively, adjacent to the boundary are nearly equal, it is possible that the surface effect may be larger than the strain effect. he difference € B - € A gives a driving force per unit area of grain boundary due to an applied strain.)2 However, with increasing t the surface effect decreases while the strain effect presumably remains constant. Therefore, at some sufficiently large value of t, it is possible to ignore surface energy driving forces.* On the other hand, the surface effect is eliminated for all value of t when both grains have the same (hkl) orientation or have identical values of surface energy. Although the previous study provided information on the effect of orientation on strain-induced erain boundary migration,&apos; no orientations with the (100) plane in the plane of the sheet were included. The present paper provides information of this kind. A seed crystal reorientation technique4 was used to prepare a large bicrystal of silicon iron (3 1/4 pct Si) consisting of two (100) grains in the (100) [001] and (100) [Oil] orientations. After a cold rolling strain (7 pct reduction to 3/4 mm final thickness), small specimens were prepared as before2 and then annealed in hydrogen. The boundary migration was such that the grain in the (100) [011] orientation always grew. After overnight anneals at 1100° or 1000°C, none of the initial (100) [001] grain remained. An anneal of 30 min at 950°c, however, provided information on the start of boundary migration. Fig. 1 shows both the initial position (lower line) and the final position (upper curved line) of part of the boundary, as revealed by thermal grooves. In a different area, part of the final boundary was not revealed by thermal grooves; the rate of boundary migration presumably was too high for the growth front to be defined by the time dependent thermal grooving process. In another area there was a vacated intermediate position connected to the initial position of the grain boundary. This indicates that only part of the boundary

THE yield stress, o of low-carbon steel has been shown to vary with the average grain diameter, d, according to the relation1-3 where o is taken to be the lower yield-point stress Of is the friction stress on an unlocked dislocation, and ky is a constant. The interpretation2,4 of ky in terms of dislocation theory relates this constant to the stress to unlock a source across a grain boundary. cottrel14 predicted that ky would increase with decreasing temperature. This was observed to be the case by Adams and coworkers5 in their investigation of niobium (columbium). However, petch6 and Backofen: both working with low-carbon steel, found ky insensitive to temperature. In his work with high-purity niobium, Johnson&apos; found ky equal to zero. Evansg showed that k, was essentially zero for niobium containing nitrogen in an appreciable concentration range. The present experiments were designed to check this apparent anomaly in the value of ky in another Group V metal. Yield points were determined as a function of grain size at several temperatures for tantalum and a tantalum-tungsten alloy. The material used was double are-melted tantalum and a double are-melted alloy of 90 pct Ta and 10 pct tungsten (by weight), both obtained as unannealed, swaged rod. The impurity content of the materials is given in Table I. The tantalum was annealed at 1325"C. in a vacuum resistance furnace using a tantalum boat. The alloy was similarly annealed at 1660°C. Annealing times varied from 15 min to 2 hr, depending on the desired grain size. Nominal pressure in the furnace was 3 X 10~4 mm of Kg. Metallographic examination showed that the annealing treatment produced grain sizes ranging frorn 0.021 to 0.200 mm in the tantalum, and 0.060 to 0.160 mm in the alloy. Tensile bars were made by centerless grinding the annealed specimen;, and then electropolishing to remove all grinding marks. The specimens were than pulled :it 2 1/2 pct per rnin in an Instron testing machine. The tantalum specimens were tested at 77", 195", and 300°K. The alloy was tested at 300°K only. All specimens exhibited a yield-point phenomenon at all temperatures. Typical load-elongation curves at the three test temperatures are shown in Fig. 1. The lower yield stress is plotted as a function of (grain size) in Figs. 2 and 3 for tantalum and the 90 pct Ta-10 pct W alloy, respectfully. THE system molten copper-oxygen-sulphur is of interest from both the practical and theoretical standpoints; practically, because oxygen and sulphur play an important role in the commercial production of copper, and theoretically because it offers a chance to study the reaction between an oxide gas, SO2, and a molten metal. Reactions of this type, such as that between CO or C02 and molten iron, are important in many metallurgical operations. Again, the determination of any gas-metal equilibrium is of theoretical interest and value insofar as it contributes to the general development of the laws for solution of gases in metals. This problem is being given an increasing amount of attention in modem metallurgy. This paper is the first of a series and presents the results of a determination of the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper at temperatures from 1100° to 1500°C., and pressures from about 20 mm. of mercury to somewhat above atmospheric. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK The solubility of gases in most liquids has been found to obey Henry&apos;s law, which states that for a fixed temperature the amount of gas dissolved is directly proportional to the pressure. However this law does not hold for liquid metals. Instead, it appears that for many gases, particularly the simple diatomic ones such as 02, N2 and H2, the amount dissolved in liquid metals is directly proportional to the square root of the pressure. This is known as Sieverts&apos; law. It may be recognized as a special case of Henry&apos;s law, which applies when the solute gas is dissociated into atoms or when it reacts with the solvent metal to form solute molecules containing single atoms of the gaseous elements, as, for example: [2M -}-G2 = 2MGK =G) IYf X[I]] which, if the solubility is not too high and the concentration of metal therefore nearly constant, can be simplified to: [MG = Ki Pa,[2]] Following the same reasoning, it would be expected that the solubility of SO2 in copper would be proportional to the cube root of the pressure, the reaction being as follows: [6Cu + S02 = Cu2S + 2Cu20[3] K Cu2S X (Cu20)2(Cu)e(Psm)[4]] or, neglecting the change in metal concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume V of gas absorbed: [K1 =or Vdo,= K2/PBO [5] PsO]

Stress-strain data are reported for sodium chloride, lithium fluoride, and magnesium oxide tested in compression at diffevent strain rates in the telrlperature range from 70° to 873°K. Quantitative equations are given for the stvain-rate dependence of the critical resolved shear stress and the initial rate of work havdening. The properties so determined are compared with results previously reported for metals. ALTHOUGH the effects of strain rate and temperature on the stress-strain characteristics of metals have been extensively investigated1,2 these effects have not been studied in detail in ionic crystals. In the only previous investigations on the effect of strain rate on the deformation of ionic crystals. Gilman and gohnston3 and Hulse and pask4 have shown that the yield stress of lithium fluoride and magnesium oxide at room temperature is proportional to the ninth or tenth root of the strain rate. CRYSTAL PREPARATION Lithium fluoride, sodium chloride. and magnesium oxide single crystals were purchased from the Har-shaw Chemical Co. The compression fixture and sample preparation have been described in detail previously.5 The detectable impurities in MgO were eight parts in 105 of Fe and six parts in 105 of Si; in LiF, six parts in 105 of Mg; and in NaC1, two parts in 105 of Fe and four parts in 10&apos; of Mg. The cleaved samples measured - 0.1 in. by 0.1 in. by 0.3 in. Prior to testing all samples were annealed at -0.8 of their melting point and cooled to room tempera- ture at 50 C per hr.&apos; Samples were strained at rates (<) of 0.1, 0.01, 0.002, and 0.0002 in. per in. per min. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 is a plot of the critical resolved shear stress a,. (extrapolation of slope of easy glide region to zero strain) of sodium chloride, lithium fluoride, and magnesium oxide tested at different strain rates as a function of temperature. In all crystals at all strain rates a, decreases with increasing temperature according to an equation of the type397 where uo is a stress constant, K is a constant, and T is the absolute temperature. The points in Fig. 1 are the average of six tests. It is evident that there is a break in the log 0,- temperature plots at a characteristic temperature T,. The constant K of Eq. THE present knowledge of the Ti-Al system is limited to the portion of the diagram extending from pure aluminum to the intermetallic compound TiAl3&apos; A preliminary investigation of the titanium-rich Ti-A1 alloys revealed that the solubility of aluminum in titanium is quite extensive and that the transformation temperature of titanium is raised by alloying with aluminum. From an X-ray diffraction study of alloys containing up to 75 atomic pct Al (TiAl3), the phase boundaries at 750°C were located as follows: the a titanium solid solution extends from 0 to about 36 atomic pct Al, a two-phase region exists from 36 to 46 atomic pct Al, and an intermediate phase of varying concentration extends from 46 to 62 atomic pct Al. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the crystal structure of this new phase. The alloys were prepared by melting in a helium arc furnace on a water-cooled copper plate, using a furnace essentially the same as that described in ref. 2. The titanium metal was of the iodide type furnished by the New Jersey Zinc Co., and a piece of pure aluminum (99.99 pct) was obtained through the courtesy of the Aluminum Co. of America. After melting, the samples, weighing approximately 5 g, were sealed in evacuated fused silica tubes and homogenized for 4 hr at 1000°C. The specimens were then held for 10 days at 750°C and rapidly cooled to room temperature. Filings were then taken from each sample, sealed in evacuated vials, annealed at 750°C for 4 hr, and rapidly cooled to room temperature by quenching the vials in water. Powder diffraction patterns were obtained with a 14.32 cm diam camera, using K copper radiation filtered through a nickel foil. Structure Determination The X-ray diffraction patterns of the alloys containing 46, 50, 55. 60, and 62 atomic pct Al were identical, except for a slight shift in the positions of the reflections. The alloy containing 55 atomic pct Al was chosen far structure determination. The powder pattern contained 37 reflections and the a, doublets were well resolved in the back-reflection range. The relatively small number of reflections and the sharpness of the pattern were considered as an indication of a simple atomic arrangement in a relatively small unit cell of high symmetry, and an attempt was therefore made to solve the structure without single crystal work. A satisfactory fit was found on a large scale Hull-Davey tetragonal chart for an axial ratio of approximately 1.45. All the reflections were readily indexed and the tentative unit cell dimensions were computed to be a - 2.81 kX, c - 4.07 kX, and c/a = 1.448. The indices (hkl) and the values of d and sin2 A are given in Table I. The agreement between observed and computed sin2 is quite satisfactory. Once the unit cell was known, the details of the structure were readily found. First, it is obvious that the number of atoms per unit cell cannot exceed two, since more than two atoms would lead to a density greater than that of pure titanium. The next logical step is to assume that the two atoms occupy the corner and center of the cell. If this assumption is correct, the structure may be described as follows: space group D1, - P 4/mmm; one titanium atom in a: 000; one aluminum atom in d: 1/2 1/2 1/2: and no extinctions. Assuming this structure to be the correct one. intensities were computed by means of the usual equation: sin2 0 cos 0 where F is the structure factor; 8, the Bragg angle. and p, the multiplicity factor. The calculated values of intensities are compared in Table I with the visually estimated intensities. The agreement is quite satisfactory and the structure is therefore confirmed. The only technical session on Thursday was a continuation of the Symposium on Pyrometry. The members not attending the symposium -made the trip to La Salle. They were welcomed by the Mayor, to whose speech Major Arthur S. Dwight briefly responded. After luncheon the party divided and was taken by automobile to the various chosen points of interest, such as the cement works, the various zinc smelters, the coal mines, and underground cement-rock mines, where underground steam shovels were operating, etc. A special scenic trip was arranged for the ladies. The party returned by special train to Chicago, arriving at 7:30. Those desiring to visit the coal mines at Franklin and Macoupin Coun-ties left by train that evening on a special car for Benton, and were piloted through the field by Mr. Putnam, superintendent of the Old Ben Coal Corpn., Mr. Carroll, assistant general superintendent of the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co., and Carl Scholz, general manager of the Vallier Coal Co. Through the courtesy of the various railroads the visitors were furnished a special coach which took them to the various mines with the least delay and enabled them to see more than would be otherwise possible. Mines 8 and 9 of the Old Ben Coal Corpn., at West Frankfort, were first visited; thence the party proceeded to Orient mine of the Chicago; Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co., where luncheon was served, and then proceeded to Vallier, where both the top and the under-ground workings were inspected. The party returned to. Benton and from there proceeded in automobiles to inspect the washery plant of the United States Fuel Co. at that point; and boarded the train reaching Chicago Saturday morning. Several left Benton for their homes without returning to Chicago.

An oxidative alkaline pressure leach is shown to increase the magnetic susceptibility of coal-pyrite particles. The leach was successfully exploited as a pretreatment in the magnetic desulfurization of an eastern Canadian coal. Greater than 50% total sulfur (65% pyritic sulfur) rejection at 85% clean coal yield was achieved using a high-gradient magnetic separator (HGMS) at 1.3 T and 53 mm/s (2 in. per sec) flow rate, after pretreatment at 0.5 mot NaOH, 85ºC (185ºF), 930 kPa (135 psi) air pressure, 15 minutes retention time, and 20% solids by weight (w/w). Without pretreatment, sulfur rejection at these HGMS settings was less than 5%.

Montreal, April 6-7. "Resilient" and "bullish" were the terms used by R. D. Mushlitz of Asarco and K. C. Hendrick of Noranda Sales Corp. respectively, to describe the near term prospects for lead and zinc. The two men delivered their predictions at a joint meeting of the Lead Industries Association and the Zinc Institute held here. In speaking before a packed audience, Mushlitz insisted that "the lead industry is far from the sedentary one which many would have us believe, and although it may be slow and tortuous at times, . . . it is a viable and progressive industry which won&apos;t give up easily to the various pressures. . . . and, in the long run, will prevail."

ALTHOUGH the earliest use of rubber-tired haulage was in Illinois in 1936, the first unit of this type of equipment used in West Virginia was shipped into the state in 1938. All units placed in West Virginia mines have been of the shuttle-car type. The Katherine Coal Mining Co., at Lumberport, W. Va., was the second company in the United States to install shuttle cars and the Gay Coal and&apos; Coke Co., at [ ] Mt. Gay, W. Va., was the first company in the country to install the thin-bed type of shuttle car. On Oct. 8, 1940, nine companies in the state were using 41 shuttle cars, of which 10 cars at three mines were of the thin-bed type. All shuttle cars of the low type were in the southern fields and all of the high type were in northern West Virginia. At that time several units were in the process of delivery. The data in this paper were collected in the field by Mr. Schroder in connection with graduate work on mechanical loading of coal in West Virginia by mobile loaders. In the course of his field work he visited five mines in the state that were using shuttle cars. All of these mines were in high-volatile coal beds of strong structure. [ ] The more pertinent data obtained at the mines visited are given in Table I. The maximum distance of shuttle-car haul is the distance between the transfer station and the farthermost place. Tonnage per loading unit per foot of bed thickness is to some degree a measure of relative efficiency, especially if the different operations are working the same bed or have somewhat similar conditions.
