The dissolution of carbon in molten Fe-C alloys has been the subject of a number of investigations. Most of these investigations have been inconclusive because of poorly defined experimental variables. Two of the more sophisticated studies are summarized below. Dahlke and Knacke' studied the phenomenon by, in part, immersing graphite rods into 0.5 pct carbon-steel for different lengths of time. Since the experiments were conducted in air or in CO atmospheres, the melt was strongly agitated by gas evolution. It was concluded that the change in bath composition as a function of immersion time was in agreement with the assumption that the dissolution process was transport-controlled. The hydrodynamic conditions in these experiments, however, were not well-defined and gave no indication of the nature of the dissolution process at higher fluid velocities. In a recent study Shurygin and ruk investigated the dissolution of carbon in molten Fe-C, Fe-Si, Fe-P, and Fe-Ni alloys. Small graphite disks were rotated in a crucible containing molten alloys under such conditions that only the lower face of the disk was exposed to the melt. The results of this investigation indicate that, over the range of velocities (100 to 1000 rpm) and bulk liquid concentrations (0.7 to 4.5 wt pct C) considered, the dissolution of carbon in the iron alloys is limited by the diffusion of carbon from the interface to the bulk liquid (a transport mechanism). For the particular geometry used by these authors, exact analytical solutions of hydrodynamic and diffusion problems are aailable. Hence the experimental results obtained by Shurygin and Kryuk permit the evaluation of diffusion coefficients of carbon in the four systems investigated. In the present investigation a series of experiments were conducted in which the rate of dissolution of carbon in Fe-C alloys was measured under conditions which permitted wide variation of the fluid velocity and the carbon concentration of the bulk liquid. Graphite cylinders were rotated at different speeds in a stationary concentric crucible containing various molten Fe-C alloys. THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT In general, the resistance to mass transfer from a solid interface to a turbulent liquid is assumed to reside in a laminar boundary layer adjacent to the interface. If it is also assumed that the diffusion coefficient is independent of concentration, the steady-state rate of dissolution for the case of arbitrary liquid and solid densities can be obtained from the integration of the equations of continuity. The derivation is similar to that used by Lommel and chalmers4 for the case of pl = ps. The solution, expressed in terms where N = rate of diffusion of the solute from the interface. Newell1 has shown that hydrogen is removed from steel in a vacuum at a temperature of 500° to 900° C. within 136 hr. Holm and Thompson2 also state that, especially when the hydrogen is high, the results obtained by extraction at 800°C. agree with those obtained by vacuum fusion. In this laboratory, an apparatus was designed (Oct. 1940) and used wherein the piece of steel was heated at 100°F. in a Torricellian vacuum (Fig. I). This vacuum was produced by raising and lowering a "leveling bottle or bulb" containing mercury. Extensive tests were made with this apparatus. The weakness of the procedure was the possibility of leakage of air into the tube around the rubber stopper at the bottom. The present plan is to raise and lower the mercury by applying vacuum from a mechanical pump, to the top of the tube and then to a bottle of mercury in which the bottom of the tube is immersed. The Apparatus The extraction is made in a Pyrex tube A, I in. i.d. It is drawn down at the top at N and an 8-mm. i.d. tube is welded on it. To this a Pyrex stopcock E, 4-mm. bore, is welded. The tube between N and E is preferably 8 in. long and is graduated in milliliters. The total length of A to the stopcock is 28 inches. Heat is supplied by a split-tube furnace. 0 in. long by 6 in. in diameter, hinged on the side. A short pyrometer couple P is inserted through the walls of the furnace. In use this is standardized by comparison with a standard couple in a I-in. tube, just opposite this short couple. In the I-in. tube A a glass rod R, flattened at one end, supports the sample S and the length of R is so adjusted that the sample is in proper place. (It may float in the mercury.) The tube A is inserted in a large rubber stopper to fit the bottle B and extends nearly to the bottom. It is so placed that the handle of the stopcock faces the operator. In this stopper also is a short tube D bent at right angles for the application of vacuum. Also in this stopper is an 8-mm. tube C reaching nearly to the bottom; this is bent so as to miss the heater and again bent to bring it in line with and as near as possible to the upper and reduced part of tube A. On this tube C is welded a 4-mm.-bore stopcock H. In order that the two tubes may be as near as possible, the handle of stopcock H faces the back, or is the reverse of stopcock E. The total height of II above the bottom is 28 in. As explained later, this is the pressure-measuring tube C. The bottle B is about half full of mercury. The mercury must cover the ends of A and C by about I in. when they are evacuated. By tees T and rubber tubing RT the tubes A, C and D, the latter through the three-way stopcock M, are connected to the vacuum pump. A sheet of asbestos at K prevents the stopcocks E and H from becoming so hot that they leak. A good grade of vacuum lubricant prevents leakage of E and H. In order to measure the pressure of the

Since 1904, when exploration of the Mayari deposits of iron ore in northeastern Cuba was undertaken, there llas been increasing interest in these ores. Tlie Transactions contain numerous references to t1ieln.l This iron ore, which is shipped to the Tinited States in the nodulizecl state, has been thoroughly tested and found very valuable; the deposit covers over 25,000 acres and there is in sight over 500,000,000 tons of ore that, by systematic mining, runs practically constant in composition. With nickel and chromium present, also titanium in sufficient quantities to attract attention, as well as extremely low phosphorus and sulfur contents, the iron founder is naturally interested in the utilization of RInpari ore for pig iron for the better grades of finishrtl iron products. The present point of coilsn~iil)tion ol ILlapri ore is at Sparrow's Poi111, where hlayari pig iron of ally desiretl coml>osition is made. The composition of the dried ore is about as follows: Iron -29 per cent., silica 3 pc.r cent., nickel 1 per cciit., chroiniun~ 1.5 per cent., alumina 11 per cent., ant1 coinbined water 13 per cent. When nodulized, the iron runs up to nearly 56 per cent., the silic:~, :tlumi~i:i, nickel, and c~llromiurn are slightly highr than the arno~l~its just given. Arrangements with other companies provide for treatment of Company and custom zinc concentrates. Location of the Midvale plant in the heart of the Western mining country makes it possible to serve shippers from these nine producing states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. HISTORY shows that the nation which makes the most steel is the most likely to win wars. Today the course of war shows that the nations which get there first with the most steel of the right kind will be the ones to win. Not only the most steel, mind you, but the right kind. Adequate production, which was enough for victory before the days of totally mechanized warfare of 1943, must now be accompanied by still better quality as well as more effective distribution. Further, both production and distribution must be flexible enough to permit rapid shifts from one weapon to another for use in varying elements in varying geographical areas. Thus the problem of making enough steel of the right kind at the right time in the face of changing requirements dictated by experience has been and will remain highly complex. This does riot permit us to ease our restrictions on nonessential use. War is a complex business, like the job of making steel for war. Each time we solve one problem, another pops its head up. Yet we are making some progress.

INTRODUCTION The equilibrium constants for methane and for water, and for ethane and water have been calculated from experimental data for the two binary systems.2,3,11,12 These constants are for the two-phase systems for the temperature range of 100" to 340°F and the pressure range of 200 to 10,000 psia. The constants for ethane are greater than those for methane. Equilibrium constants for a natural gas from a natural gas-water system6 are about the same as those for methane. Equilibrium constants for water in all three systems are very nearly the same over the greater part of the range of temperatures and pressures studied. In ideal solutions, the vapor-liquid equilibrium constants for a component should be the same in all such solutions at a given temperature and pressure.5 Few solutions are ideal, and consequently the use of generalized constants often leads to error in situations where they do not actually apply. In decidedly non-ideal systems, it is desirable to have equilibrium constant data for the specific system. Vaporization equilibrium constants may be calculated either by thermodynamic methods or from experimental vapor-liquid equilibrium data. In the thermodynamic calculation. the equilibrium constant K may be shown to be" K = fP,/fl'..........(1) where fPi is the fugacity of the pure component i at the given temperature and at the vapor pressure of the pure component, and fp is the fugacity of pure i in the gaseous state at the temperature and total pressure of the system. At best the thermodynamic calculation results in a K applicable to ideal solutions. Equilibrium constants calculated from Equation (1) have been found to have only limited agreement with experimental values, even though the solutions for which they were calculated approached ideality."'" If the more volatile component is at a temperature above its critical, the accuracy of the equilibrium constant for the component is made more doubtful by the use of the vapor pressure term under such conditions. In order to make the thermodynamic calculation on a component above its critical temperature, one must resort to one of the empirical methods of extrapolation of the vapor pressure to conditions above its critical point.13 Application of the thermodynamic equilibrium constant then to the methane-water or the ethane-water systems would be risky since the systems are non-ideal, and the methane and ethane are above their critical in most petroleum operations. IT may be taken for granted that a mine official knows his duties, as outlined by the bituminous mining laws of the State, he knows how coal should be mined and transported, and he has judgment on any possibly unsafe condition in his mine. Certainly, if he is weak on any of these points, there are definite ways in which he can acquire the needed knowledge. If with this knowledge the mine official has the necessary practical experience to bring self-confidence, he stands before the world as a man who knows his job. There is, however, another side to his work, one not found in hooks, a side even that may not be learned at the face even though one spends a lifetime there. The actual duties a mine official knows and performs are the tangible and definite things about his work. There are other things which may be termed intangible, because they are hard to pin down and see, and. which appear to be of equal importance in successfully handling a job and which in time determine the very success of the company itself.

The technique of unidirectional solidification has been applied to the A1-AI3Ni and A1-CuAl2 ezltectic alloy systems; the controlled microstructure of A1-A3Ni consists of parallel A13Ni whiskers emhedded in an aluminum matrix while the Al-CuAl2, system solidifies as parallel alternate lamellae of aluminm and CuAl2. Mechanical tests (tension and flexure) have shown that the particle-matrix interface bond formed during unidirectional solidification allowes for efficient load transfer from the matrix to the reinforcing phase. Strength and fracture characterstics of the alloys were studied as a function of phase orientation; the tensile strength of controlled Al-Al3Ni samples was 43,000 psi (three times greater than that of as-cast specime~s). The strength of the Al-CIA2, cutectic was studied as a function of lamellae-flexure stress-axis orientation using a microbend apparatus. A twofold increase in outer fiber stress was observed as the lamellae were rotated from a position of no reinforcing (perpendicular to the stress axis) to one of maximum reinforcing (parallel to the stress axis), The brittle reinforcing constituent in each alloy (A13Ni and CuAl2) was observed to he the nucleating phase for fracture. It is to be concluded from this investigation that unidirectionally solidified eutectic alloys have a potential use as reinforcing coniposite) materials. In a recent review article, Chadwick1 has described the work of many investigators in the area of controlled solidification of binary eutectic alloys. Thus far, more than twenty eutectic alloys have been unidirectionally solidified to produce structures consisting of two phases in the form of alternating lamellae or as whiskers embedded within a continuous matrix; in either case, the phases are aligned parallel to the growth direction. In particular, Kraft and Albright2 have shown that the Al-CuA1, eutectic alloy exhibits a lamellar microstruc- ture as a result of unidirectional solidification while Lemkey, Hertzberg, and Ford3 have studied the A13Ni whisker-aluminum matrix morphology in the A1-A13Ni system. Whether these alloys could exhibit reinforcing behavior would have to depend upon the strength and volume fraction of the reinforcing phase (AI3Ni and CuA12) and the nature of the bond between the reinforcing phase and the matrix. Hertzberg and Kraft4 have shown that the interface bond between chromium whiskers and a copper matrix in unidirectionally solidified Cu-Cr is particularly good while Lemkey and Kraft5 have reported chromium-whisker tensile strengths in excess of 1,000,000 psi. However, with the chromium volume fraction being less than 2 pct, no reinforcing behavior was displayed by the Cu-Cr alloy.6 In view of the encouraging results concerning the good interfacial bond and high strength of the reinforcing phase in the Cu-Cr system and preliminary mechanical test data reported by Lemkey et al.3 for the A1-A13Ni system, the A1-CuA1, and A1-A13Ni eutectic alloys containing 50 and 10 vol pct, respectively, of the reinforcing phase give promise of possessing mechanical reinforcing behavior. Based on this premise, the objective of the investigation was to study the strength and fracture behavior exhibited by these anisotropic microstructures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Controlled Solidification Procedure. An extensive description of the technique of unidirectional solidification has been presented elsewhere.' However, the pertinent details for each eutectic system studied are discussed below. Al-A13Ni System. Several master heats of this alloy were prepared by vacuum-induction melting in an A12O3crucible and casting in SiO2 mold or by induction melting in alumina crucibles under argon. The initial heats were prepared from 99.99 pct A1 and 99.99+ pct Ni, while later heats used 99.999+ pct A1 and 99.99+ pct Ni. Specimens of these master heats were unidirectionally solidified using induction and resistance heating sources and argon atmospheres at growth rates from 1.1 to 28.7 cm per hr. Early in the year American tankers were urgently requested by the British to replace losses and offset slower transit under convoy. Some forty American owned tankers were first assigned to Britain and an additional forty-odd ships were transferred during the summer. This threatened to reduce our transportation facilities from Gulf ports to the Eastern seaboard below requirements, especially should sinkings have increased and the British needed more ships. Co-ordinator Ickes began preparations for restricting gasoline consumption in the Eastern district and plans were formulated for the construction of an emergency trunk pipe line from Texas to New York and Philadelphia refining centers, and for a gigantic tanker-building program. Sales of new oil-heating units in the East practically ceased. The companies were urged to transport as much oil as possible by tank car and by October 140,000 barrels of oil per day were reaching the East Coast district by rail, sufficient to meet 8 per cent of total requirements. But British sinkings from July through October decreased 63 per cent compared with the four months ended June 30, Britain began the return of tankers, the construction plans were dropped, and the threatened shortage was thus averted.

THE following is an account of a survey undertaken to test the possibility of outlining a kimberlite pipe by magnetouietric methods. Kimberlite is a basic igneous rock closely related to melilite-basalt or alnoite, which occurs either in the form of volcanic plugs or as dikes intruded into rocks of various types and geological ages up to and includ¬ing the Lower Cretaceous. The famous diamond mines of South Africa are all in kimberlite pipes and these pipes are probably the original source as well of the vast alluvial deposits found in various parts of the country. The pipe chosen for this experiment is one that ' occurs on the farm Goedgevonden No. 20, about sixteen miles north of the village of Klerksdorp and ninety miles southwest of Johannesburg. Some prospecting has been done on this pipe and diamonds were produced from it but not in paying quantities. The magnetometric survey was made in June, 1932, by R. Krahmann and H. Wallisch and the results are shown on the accompanying plan. On the plan are shown also the boundaries of the pipe as exposed at the surface and details in regard to the surrounding foundations. These are taken from a geological survey made at a later date by W. Beetz, of Johannesburg.

Tensile data indicate that over the range of strain rates 10-5 to 10-1 sec-1 and in the temperature range 298° to 743°K the flow stress at a given temperature may be expressed as: C0 = Cem where m changes abruptly at a critical strain rate of 10-2 sec-1. The Zener-Hollomon parameter was tested and found to be invalid except at temperatures exceeding 700° K. Values of AH calculated for temperatures above 700°K ranged from 30 to 47.5 kcal per g-mole. ThE flow characteristics of aluminum and aluminum alloys as a function of temperature and strain rate have been of interest to various experimenters for many years. Trozera et al.1 determined tensile flow curves for pure aluminum and concluded that the combined effect of temperature and strain rate on the flow stress could be related using the Zener-Hollomon parameter. More recently, Hockett2 proposed a relationship between compressive flow stress, temperature, and true strain rate which could be represented by a surface. Holt et al.3 studied strain rate effects on flow stress in a number of aluminum alloys at room temperature. It was determined that there is a critical strain rate above which a strain rate effect is observed. It was also reported that the strain rate sensitivity was significant in aluminum alloys in the "0" condition only. In a recent review paper McQueen4 has considered a number of mathematical expressions which have been used to describe the relationship between stress, strain rate, and temperature. These expressions have been applied to the flow characteristics of a number of different metals and alloys including aluminum. In the present work the strain rate sensitivity of 7075-0 aluminum was determined in the temperature range of 298° to 743°K. The tensile flow stress at 0.2 pct offset was obtained over a nominal strain rate range of 10-5 to 10-1 sec-1. EXPERIMENTAL Threaded tensile specimens were cut from a single heat of 7075-T6 aluminum. The composition of this heat is given in Table I. The test bars had a gage section 1.5 in. long by 0.250 in. diam and conformed to ASTM specification E-8-57T. After machining, the bars were annealed at 413° ± 10°C for 2 hr. They were then cooled to 260°C in 3 hr, and finally air cooled to room temperature. This treatment is commonly used to produce the "0" condition. Load-time curves at constant crosshead speeds were obtained at various temperatures using an Instron testing machine. Crosshead speeds ranged from 0.002 to 40 in. per min. A three-zone resistance tube furnace was used for the elevated-temperature tests. Temperatures were measured at three points along the gage length by means of suitably placed thermocouples. Each tensile bar was held at temperature for 30 min prior to testing and the maximum temperature variation along the gage length was kept below 1°C. In all, 275 samples were tested and each data point plotted is an average of at least two tests. In many cases the point represents up to six tests. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Values of the flow stress at 0.2 pct offset at six different temperatures are plotted vs strain rate on log-log coordinates in Fig. 1. THAT gold ores occur in Georgia is a fact apparently not widely known outside of that state, yet in the last hundred years nearly $18,000,000 worth of gold has been mined there. The discovery of gold-hearing quartz was made in 1823 on the "Forty Acre Lot" (which now belongs to the Columbia Mining Co.), in McDuffie County, and about seven years later the first stamp mill on record was erected near there. In recent years Georgia's gold production has dwindled to an insignificant figure. However, with the increase in gold price, interest in this district has been revived, so an electrical geophysical survey was undertaken to aid in discovering new quartz veins, on a part of the Forty Acre Lot, the adjoining Hamilton mine, and the nearby Woodall property.

AT Grand Saline, some 65 miles east of Dallas, the Morton Salt Co. of Chicago has for some years operated a brine pumping and evaporation plant on a salt dome. They recently drilled trial holes to obtain data on the dome, preparatory to opening, a new mine, with the following results: The dome is in the form of a truncated cone, with an average of 210 ft. of cover. The top of the dome is approximately one mile in diameter, with the town of Grand Saline lying over the northern rim, and the sides slope off at an angle of 50" to 80" from the horizontal. The deepest holes were drilled to 900 ft. without penetrating beyond the salt, and indications are that the salt deposit is several thousand feet thick. As the deposit increases in area with the depth, there is undoubtedly enough salt to supply a mining operation for an almost unlimited period of years.

OPENING the sessions of the Mining Geology Committee, the program on postwar mineral controls drew a larger attendance than any other session of the entire meeting. In view of its general interest, the papers of this session, or a substantial portion of them, are printed elsewhere in this issue. Whether control of mineral resources can help to promote peace, how controls could be applied and to whom, are questions so far-reaching that naturally no pat answer was agreed upon. In fact the discussion took on something of the flavor of a debate between those who favor strict control and those who felt that attempting to ration nations in peacetime would defeat its own ends. Discussion from the floor emphasized the difficulties in administering any international control and the $64 question, that no one cared to answer, asked by a courageous young lady who was induced to mount the rostrum for the purpose, was whether the United Nations should exchange mineral controllers to police each other.
