RECOVERY and profits in the mining business do not go hand in hand. Some part of an orebody can usually be recovered at a lower cost per ton than the whole orebody or a higher proportion of it. Similarly, the total of the profits that may be made from mining an orebody is in itself not a true measure of the value of the business. The yardstick for money value should be present worth, and this is particularly so for purposes of com-parison. A simple example, well within the bounds of practicability, illustrates these points: Assume a mine to have known ore reserves of 4,000,000 tons. The ore is of uniform grade but is so situated that 1,000,000 tons could be mined more cheaply than the remainder. Present operations are on the basis of complete recovery of the ores. Output is 100,000 tons per year at a profit of $1 per ton. It is estimated that the 1,000,000 tons of readily accessible ore could be mined at the same production rate but at a profit of $2 per ton. For an output of 100,000 tons each year at a profit of $1.00 per ton, the mine will have a life of 40 years; will produce $4,000,000 of total profit, and, at Hoskold rates of 8 and 4 per cent, will have a present value of $1,104,690. If only the easy one-quarter of the ore is considered, with an output of 100,000 tons each year, at a profit of $2.00 per ton, that part of the mine will have a life of 10 years, will produce total profits of $2,000,000, and at rates of 8 and 4 per cent will have a present value of $1,224,800. . Under conditions such as these, then, one-quarter of the reserve ore promptly mined is worth some 10 per cent more than the entire reserve would be on an average basis extending over the longer period. Assume further that one-half, or 2,000,000 tons, of the reserves could be promptly mined at the same yearly rate of 100,000 tons at a profit of $1.50 per ton. Then this part of the mine would have a life of 20 years, would produce total profits of $3,000,000, and would have a present value of $1,320,630; approximately 20 per cent greater than for the whole ore-body on an average basis for the longer period.

THE property at which this work was done consists of a large deposit of potash salts occurring in massive beds of rock salt, overlain by 600 ft. of salt-impregnated shales and marls. It is in the Province of Cataluiia, Spain, about 45 miles from the railway station of Mauresa and about a mile south of Suria. In addition to sinking the shaft, the program of construction work laid out by the European owners (not Spaniards) included a single-track narrow-gage railroad from Mauresa to the mine; one large office building and several large shop buildings, all of brick and concrete with steel truss roofs; two extensive benches for the future recovery plant; and a large village of stone dwellings for employees. The pay-roll showed approximately 1200 to 1500 men employed. After two years' operation, ending early in the autumn of 1920, the shaft had been sunk 325 ft. and still had an equal distance to go to reach the potash; all tunnels for the railroad were done and the road-bed $0 per cent completed; only a little more than the foundations were completed for all the large buildings, and the excavations of the benches were about 75 per cent done-while only a fair start had been made upon the employees' village. This was the state of affairs when the European owners decided to offer this property under a one-year option to an American syndicate, providing that they agreed to carry on the entire building program and to sink the shaft as fast as was consistent with the quality of work which they demanded, for they wished the shaft to endure at least 200 years.

EXPLORATION for deep-seated orebodies in the Silver Belt area of the Coeur d'Alene mining district is complicated by meager surface expressions of diagnostic criteria, lack of knowledge of the significance of specific alteration phenomena, and the great expense involved in the exploration for ore shoots, the tops of which often occur near sea level elevation or below and as much as 4000 ft or more below the surface. Except for the early studies of Ransome and Calkins in 1903 and 1904,' little geological work was done in the Coeur d'Alene district for many years, and it is only during the last 15 to 20 years that complete and careful geological mapping has been applied to most of the mines in the area. Much early information, which now would prove invaluable, is lost in hundreds of miles of caved and inaccessible mine openings not mapped by mining geologists. In more recent years mining geology has become a tool of greater use in the district, and some measurable progress is being made in the accumulation of observations that are adding gradually to the knowledge of ore deposits in the district. The recognition of alteration phenomena and related features by Hoyt S. Gale3 in 1935, followed by the work of Shenon and McConnel in 1936-37,4 changed many of the concepts formerly held and opened the way for more critical study and mapping of alteration effects. Mapping of these effects has been in progress for several years but no well-organized, careful, and complete laboratory study of the alteration has been made by mining companies or by government agencies. Recently, Thomas Mitcham of Columbia University has been occupied in the collection and study of specimens carefully selected from several producing mines in the Silver Belt as well as from several prospects exhibiting alteration effects. Mr. Mitcham and the writer have discussed some of the preliminary results of his investigations, which indicate that definite and interesting material is forthcoming from his studies. Work of this kind, aided by careful observation by district geologists, should advance the knowledge of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots and establish additional criteria for recognizing meager shallow expressions of deep-lying orebodies. Structural details in the Silver Belt area are extremely difficult to decipher on the surface because the area is almost completely covered by a deep mantle of surface debris and soil. A dense growth of small trees and buck brush adds to a geologist's difficulties. Often large areas reveal only scattered small outcrops with great intervening areas where the underlying formations must be deduced from small altered rock fragments. Some considerable success in obtaining surface information has come from bulldozer roads and cuts in selected areas. As this type of work receives more attention, knowledge of the surface expressions of formations, alterations, faulting, and veining is expanding and giving more reliable information to guide deeper development. Lack of diagnostic marker beds in the district contributes to a geologist's difficulties in determining fault displacements. In the Silver Belt, known commercally important sulphide orebodies commonly are associated with siderite and quartz gangue. Some of the veins at shallow horizons above productive ore shoots are composed of quartz with light-colored carbonate minerals such as calcite, ferrocalcite, ferrodolomite, ankerite, and carbonates with variable amounts of manganese. The relation of these carbonates to commercial orebodies is a problem offering possibilities for research. Shallow exposures of veins composed of quartz and the light-colored carbonates, often with some associated barite, grade into quartz and siderite veins at deeper horizons. The vertical range of these carbonates has been partially established for some veins, but no reliable method has been devised for predicting where the change in a vein may take place. Careful observation and analysis of carbonates may make it possible to predict more closely where the change to siderite may be expected. In 1926 Shannon5 pointed out some of the characteristics of the carbonate veins of the district and included a few chemical analyses. Some of the Silver Belt ore shoots have small commercial outcrops, and very shallow development of some properties has led to the opening of small ore shoots." Several small ore shoots developed at shallow depths have not been explored at deep horizons, and some important ore shoots with no commercially significant exposures at shallow horizons have been developed. The greatest problem of the mining geologist working in the Silver Belt area is to find the all-important link between the very meager shallow expressions of mineralization and the rich ore shoots that may be found below. To develop criteria for use in the recognition of the weak upper expression of ore shoots, the experience of past development programs must be relied upon heavily. The investment of more than a million dollars in the exploration for such ore shoots requires some reliable criteria if these ore shoots are to be found. Management needs some assurance that the risk involved is justified by well-developed and acceptable geological inference. The richness of some of the ore shoots found thus far has contributed greatly to the justification for a bold approach, but many negative results of blind exploration programs would lead eventually to extreme caution on the part of management. Fortunately, recent experiences of development programs have been quite successful. It is hoped that added knowledge. of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots will contribute greatly to the sureness of approach toward their development. A phase diagram is proposed for the Y-C system based on the vesults of thermal analyses, microscopic obsevvations, and X-ray diffraction studies. Three intermediate phases occur in the system: a congru-ently melting fcc phase with a wide range of homogeneity about the composition Y2C, an intermediate solid-solution region between 55 and 58 at. pct C, and a bct dicarbide melting congruently at 2415°C. All three compounds undergo a phase transformation at elezlated temperatures. A continuous serzes of solzd solutions exists between the fcc phase and the high-temperature form of YC2 with a maximum in the solidus at 2000°C and 30 at. pct C and a minimum at 1805°C and 54 at. pct C. THIS investigation of the Y-C system was undertaken as part of a nuclear materials development program. Yttrium-base alloys are of interest as possible containers for liquid metals, and carbides are currently receiving increased attention as high-temperature materials for advanced reactors and other applications. Previous work on this system was limited in scope, and the results were somewhat inconclusive and at times contradictory. Spedding et al.&apos; reported the existence of a triyttrium carbide having an fcc structure with a wide range of homogeneity and Dean et a1.2 reported the existence of a rhombohedra1 phase having the stoichiometry of Y2C. Bachella et a1.3 observed that the latter was the result of ordering of carbon atoms in the fcc solid solution. The ordering range was placed at 800" to 1000°C. Vickery et a1.4 reported a high-melting compound which they identified as yttrium dicarbide, and Spedding and coworkers1 determined the structure of this phase as bct with lattice parameters a = 3.66 and c = 6.17A. Samsonov et al.5 reported the melting point of YC2 as 2300" * 50°C. Recently Bowman et a1.6 found a transformation in the dicarbide from the tetragonal to an fcc form at 1320 20°C. Samsonov and coworkers7 reported a monocarbide of yttrium melting at 1950" * 20°C and also a sesqui-carbide melting at 1800" * 50°C. The existence of the latter has also been indicated by others,1&apos;8 but neither compound has been definitely established. The Y-C phase diagram shown in Fig. 1 was proposed by Chubb and Keller8 in 1964 based on the data available at that time. The tentative nature of this diagram together with the uncertain status of the compounds indicated that additional work on this system was needed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Yttrium metal of 99.9 pct purity was prepared for use in this study by the reduction of YCl, with calcium to form a sponge product.9 The major impurities in this material were as follows: 100 ppm C, 150 pprn H, 20 ppm N, 300 to 1000 ppm O, <20 ppm Ca, <100 ppm Cr, <80 ppm Cu, 150 ppm Fe, <30 pprn Mg, <400 ppm Ta, and <100 ppm Ti. Alloys were prepared by arc melting yttrium sponge together with pieces of high-purity graphite rod in a purified argon atmosphere. Homogeneity was insured by repeated melting, inverting the ingot between melts.

ALL viscous or plastic flow of incompressible matter is the result of shear strain; the changing shape of any body that is being plastically deformed can be completely described in terms of the shear strain occurring at each point in the body.[t] Furthermore, the relative amounts of shear strain occurring in different parts of a body under stress depend upon the relative rates of shear strain at those different points, so that if the dependence of the shear rate of any material on the temperature, shear stress, previous history, etc., were understood, the principles of plastic deformation would be known, and we could calculate how a body made of a given material, having a given shape, and subject to a specified system of forces, would change its shape with time. It may be said, then, that the problem of plasticity resolves itself into, first, the problem of the rates of pure shear processes, and second, the application of what is known about pure shear to actual cases. It is the purpose of this work to investigate the former problem -i.e., the dependence of shear rates on temperature, stress, etc.-from the standpoint of recent developments in the field of chemical-rate theory and with particular reference to the phenomena occurring in the creep of metals and in the plastic flow of crystalline solids in general. It is left for the mechanical engineer, and perhaps the expert in hydrodynamics, to deal with the problem of applications1 RESOLUTION OF MACROSCOPIC SHEAR INTO MICROSCOPIC MOVEMENTS; RESEMBLANCE TO CHEMICAL REACTIONS Just as any large body is made up of many small units, or atoms, so macroscopically observable shear is the result of many microscopic unit shear processes; just as the understanding of the behavior of large bodies demands the understanding of the atoms of which it is made, so the understanding of macroscopic shear demands the understanding of these fundamental unit processes. The study of shear from this "atomistic" point of view has made considerable progress. There has been fairly complete understanding of shear processes in gases for a long time, at least for nonturbulent flow, as a chapter on gaseous viscosity in any text on the kinetic theory of gases will prove. THE Sub-province of Benguet is in the North Central part of the Island of Luzon. Baguio, the capital, is situated on a piateau 5000 ft. above sea level, and is the main health resort of the Philippines. It is rapidly becoming the favorite resort for the China Coast as well, and has many miles of beautiful, curving drives with nearly every pine-covered knoll surmounted by a summer home. The United States Army has a recreation post here, known as Camp John Hay, with a well-equipped hospital, and there is a Country Club with a good golf course adjacent. The weather during the winter months and until late spring is ideal. The business center consists mainly of Chinese and Japanese stores, several hotels, and a large public market, in which are displayed all of the vegetables of the temperate zone, which are flown near Baguio, and many tropical and other products brought up from below. This district is reached from the Coastal Plain either by the old Benguet road built in 1904 by the United States Government, or by the Naguilian road, built some years later. The former is now a toll road, with a line of stages operating over it to and from Des Mortes in connection with the government-owned rail- road. Auto travel from Manila is also along this road, the trip from Manila to Baguio requiring about seven hours, following up the great valley north of Manila for nearly 150 miles to the lower end of the Benguet road, and thence to Baguio, 25 miles. This is an interesting, scenic trip; the road is especially famous for the zig zags where it climbs out of the canyon of the Bued River to the plateau. In the September number of the National Geographic Magazine, a fine aerial picture of this road, as well as of other interesting points in various parts of the Philippines, appears. Freight for the district is taken in mainly over the Naguilian road connecting with the railroad at Bauang. This route follows the ridges of the mountain slope with broad vistas and views of the coast.

IT was noted that variations existed in the magnetic properties, namely, coercive force, He, and rema-nence, Br, of 18/8 stainless steel wires of the same analysis when these wires were given the same percentage of reductiori of area at different rates of reduction. In order to determine the extent of these variations, a program was initiated whereby commercial 302 and 304 stainless steels were drawn with a wide variation of speeds. Ultimate tensile strengths and specific resistances, as well as the Hc-BT measurements, were determined. If variations of considerable magnitude were found, it was thought that the knowledge accrued from the investigation could probably aid in determining the particular drawing speed required to obtain desired properties for a given specification for a particular analysis of wire. Drawing Procedure Two specimens (set I, No. 302 and No. 304), the chemical analyses of which are given in Table I, were drawn at different speeds, namely, 45 to 3900 ft per min, directly from 0.016 in. diam wire to 0.004 in. diam wire, a 93.7 pct reduction of area. To obtain this high percentage of reduction, the wire at 0.016 in. was softened by annealing at 1150°C. It was then strung in a No. 16CF variable speed Vaughn drawing unit and passed through 13 B.&S. gage dies of successively smaller diameter, as shown in the accompanying table. Following this step, several hundred feet of the wire was drawn, at a particular speed, through the dies and wound upon a spool. Once the sample of wire was drawn at the desired speed, the spool with the finished sample was removed, tagged for later identification, and an empty spool was placed in the machine. Another wire sample was drawn at a different speed, after making the necessary adjustments upon the Vaughn unit. At the greater speeds, several thousand feet of sample were drawn to insure that the wire to be used for testing would be uniform. This was done because the desired speed was not reached instantly; the wire taking a short while to attain the required drawing rate. All speed measurements were made by placing a tachometer against one of the machine&apos;s pulleys during the actual drawing of the specimens. 84.4 pct reduction of area. The 0.072 in. diameter wire was also annealed at 1150°C. The process of obtaining samples was the same as described above. The only difference between the two was that the rates involved were not as extensive, set II covering a range of 625 to 1150 ft per min. Tensile tests were carried out for the 0.004 in. diam wires on a horizontal Scott Tensile Tester, while tensile tests for the 0.028 in. diam wires were made on a vertical Scott Tensile Tester. Each value listed in the tables represented the average of five samples with a maximum deviation of approximately 3 pct among the samples. Resistance per foot of the wires was determined by use of standard bridges accurate to the nearest hundreth of an ohm for the 0.004 in. wire, and to the nearest thousandth of an ohm for the 0.028 in. wire. The resistances per foot were then converted to resistivities by use of the following equation: P = RxCM where R is the resistance per ft in ohms per ft; CM, the area in circular mils; and P, the resistivity in ohms—CM. The heals of formation at 78", 195, and 273°K of the ternary compound h3SbTe2 based on the elements and based on the binary compounds In Sb and [inTe have been measured. The heats of formation at these temperatlcres of the binary compounds In Sb and In Te based on the elements have also been determined. Heal contents and free energies of the three compounds have been calculated from 0° lo 80I)°K. The free energies of joyrrzalion, heats of formations, and entropies of formation at 298°K have also been calculated. The results shown that the tertnary compound is metastable with vespecl to InSh and ln Te below 696 °K. bul is slable above that temperature. The weaker bonding of results in a positice entropy of formation which with incrensirzg temperature makes increasing negative conlvihtclions to the free energy and above 696°K renders the compound slable. THE ternary compound In3SbTez occurring in the quasi-binary system In Sb- In Te&apos; forms on cooling at 829°K by a peritectic reaction.&apos; Observations at 673" and 573 K have shown that this ternary compound decomposes slowly into the binary compounds InSb and1n~e.l&apos;&apos; It has not been possible to analyze the metastable behavior of the ternary compound because up to the present time data on its thermodynamic properties have been lacking. Some information on the binary compounds, however, is available. The heat of formation of InTe at 273°K and its free energy at 673°K are kn~wn.~&apos;~ The heats of formation of InSb at 78", 273&apos;, 298", and 723°K have been measured5-&apos; and its heat capacity between approximately 12" and 300"Kg9l0 is also known. In the investigation reported here the heats of formation at 78% 195% and 273°K of the ternary compound In3SbTez have been measured. The heats of formation of the binary compounds InSb and InTe at these temperatures have been obtained by combining new calorimetric results with previously published data. The heat contents and free energies of the three compounds at various temperatures from 0" to 800°K have been calculated. Against the background of this information, the metastability of the ternary compound will be discussed. 1) EXPERIMENTAL 1.l) Preparation of Specimens. The materials used consisted of the elements indium, antimony, and tellurium, the binary compounds InSb and InTe, and the ternary compound In3SbTez. The elements, obtained from American Smelting and Refining Co., had a nominal purity of 99.999+ pct. The compound InSb was Cominco semiconductor grade; the compound InTe was prepared from the elements by melting under a vacuum of 10-h m Hg followed by slow cooling. Three batches of specimens of the compound In3SbTez were used. One batch was prepared by melting appropriate amounts of the elements in an evacuated and sealed Vycor tube. The melt was held at approximately 100°K above the liquidus for about 8 hr, shaken repeatedly, and quenched into a mixture of ice and water. The specimen was annealed in vacuum at 760°K for 4 weeks. In preparing a second batch, a mixture of the component elements was melted and quenched in water. The resulting ingot was powdered. The powder was pressed into pellets, which were annealed in vacuum at 748" to 773°K for 4 weeks. A third batch was prepared in the same manner as the second, except that the starting materials were InSb and InTe rather than the elements. Metallographic examination of samples of the three batches and X-ray diffraction examination of a sample of the second batch did not reveal evidence of microsegregation or a second phase. The results obtained with the three batches showed no systematic differences. 1.2) Calorimetry. The calorimetric method has been described in detail." Samples of the compound In3SbTez, mechanical mixtures of InSb and InTe in the proportion of 1:2, and mechanical mixtures of indium, antimony, and tellurium in the proportion of 3:1:2 were added to a bismuth-rich bath at 623°K in a metal-solution calorimeter. These additions were made from 78°K (liquid nitrogen), 195°K (dry ice and acetone), and 273°K (ice and water). The heat effects of the additions were measured. The difference in the heat effects of the additions of a compound and the additions of the mixtures of its constituents, adjusted for differences in the concentration of the bath, is the heat of formation of the compound. In the concentration range not exceeding 1.5 at. pct solute, the heat effect of the additions was a linear function of concentration. The heat of formation refers to the temperature from which the additions were made, namely, 78", 195", or 273°K. Several calibrating additions were made in each calorimetric run. The calculated heat capacity of the calorimeter and hence the calculated heat effects of the additions of samples depend upon the values adopted for the heat contents of the calibrating substance. In this investigation bismuth at 273°K was used and a value of 4.96 kcal per g-atom was taken for (HGZ3"k . 2) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 2.l) Heats of Formation. One of the great copper-producing areas of the world is comprised of five U. S. western states and northern Sonora, Mexico. The Southwest province of this area, covering southern Arizona, south- western New Mexico, and northern Sonora, produces some 55 pct of U. S. copper output and the equivalent of 15 pct of world production. In 1956 the area produced about 550,000 tons. Tucson is approximately the center of the oval- shaped province, which measures only 300 miles on its east-west axis and about 200 miles on its short axis. Northwest of the oval, and forming a tenuous connection with the Utah and Nevada copper fields, is an important operating mine, Bagdad, and also the now inactive United Verde. Along its north- south axis, running from Globe, through Tucson, to Nogales, ten moderate to major copper properties have been discovered or revived during the past 15 years, and five of these in only the past seven years. The latter five properties lie in an area 25 miles in diameter, centering 20 miles south of Tucson. In order of discovery, or revival, they are: Banner&apos;s Mineral Hill and Daisy; Cyprus et al&apos;s Pima; Duval&apos;s Esperanza; Asarco&apos;s East Pima (now called Mission mine) ; and Lewisohn&apos;s Peach. Total tonnage is estimated at about 250 million tons averaging some 0.90 pct Cu, but ultimate production may exceed this amount since some of the reserve is open ended.

THE occurrence of such a large amount of gold in the Hartsel granite, even though the surmised existence of similar areas is not new, brings freshly to mind the pegmatite type of magmatic differentiation lately brought again to attention by occurrences at Silver Peak, Nev., described by Spurr; and in Alaska, described by both Spurr and Brooks. In both localities graunitic rocks or dikes are thought to pass into metalliferous quartz-veins. An interesting association in this connection is the occurrence of diamonds in residual pegmatitic clay of San Juao de Chapado, Brazil, described by Derby :1 (P. 142) "Bodies of pegmatite are quite common in the older rocks of Brazil, both in the. diamond regions and elsewhere, occurring not only in the gneiss and granite, but in the schistose series as well. Those that have been examined are dike-like in their mode of occurrence and granitic in composition." (P. 143) "The question of the eruptive or secretionary origin of pegmatites has long been a subject of discussion among geologists. . . . The recent studies . . . seem to have clearly established that most if not all of them are essentially eruptive masses, though possibly modified in some way by aqueous agencies. Even before becoming acquainted with the literature of the subject this view had seemed to me to be the only acceptable one as regards the typical pegmatites of Brazil." What is pegmatite ? J. F. Kemp says ". . . veins or dikes-it is an open question which is the more correct term-are met formed of very coarsely crystalline aggregates of the same minerals that constitute granite. These are called pegmatite and in them is the home of graphic granite, the curious intergrowth of quartz and feldspar, such that a cross fracture of the blades of quartz suggests cuneiform characters. . . . In regard to the larger veins or dikes it seems improbable that true igneous fusion could have afforded such coarsely crystalline aggregates, and so we are forced to assume such abundance of steam and other vapors, i.e, mineralizers, as to almost, if not quite, imply solution."

The erroneous, but until recently widely prevalent, belief that iron castings were first made in Europe in the fourteenth century has been adequately refuted in a number of earlier papers;1, ll, l² but except for an unpublished metallographic study by the late William Campbell, and a phosphorus analysis by T. A. Wright of the metal of the Han dynasty cast-iron stove described by Laufer,2 nothing was known of either the chemical composition or the metallographic structure of the metal of any ancient iron casting, although data on castings of recent manufacture are abundantly available. The metal of the stove, which had been buried in a grave for at least 15 centuries, was so corroded that it seemed inadvisable to publish the results on it until morc and better specimens from other ancient castings could be obtained. During a journey through China, extending from Peking in the north to Canton in the south and Cheng-tu, Ssu-chuan, in the west, in the late summer and autumn of 1936, one of us (T. T. Read) was fortunate enough to obtain, and bring home for study, nine castings, all more than 1000 years old, of which the date of manufacture is precisely known because of inscriptions cast in them, another that lacks a dated inscription, but of which the date, as explained below, can be otherwise established, and a specimen from the largest iron casting ever made," which is also dated. The period covered by this suite of specimens extends from 502 to 1093 A.D. The erroneous, but until recently widely prevalent, belief that iron castings were first made in Europe in the fourteenth century has been adequately refuted in a number of earlier papers;1, ll, l² but except for an unpublished metallographic study by the late William Campbell, and a phosphorus analysis by T. A. Wright of the metal of the Han dynasty cast-iron stove described by Laufer,2 nothing was known of either the chemical composition or the metallographic structure of the metal of any ancient iron casting, although data on castings of recent manufacture are abundantly available. The metal of the stove, which had been buried in a grave for at least 15 centuries, was so corroded that it seemed inadvisable to publish the results on it until morc and better specimens from other ancient castings could be obtained. During a journey through China, extending from Peking in the north to Canton in the south and Cheng-tu, Ssu-chuan, in the west, in the late summer and autumn of 1936, one of us (T. T. Read) was fortunate enough to obtain, and bring home for study, nine castings, all more than 1000 years old, of which the date of manufacture is precisely known because of inscriptions cast in them, another that lacks a dated inscription, but of which the date, as explained below, can be otherwise established, and a specimen from the largest iron casting ever made," which is also dated. The period covered by this suite of specimens extends from 502 to 1093 A.D. In general, the art of securing copper from sulphide ores or concentrates may be said to consist of : (1) separation, in the molten state, of copper sulphide with some iron sulphide, from the great bulk of gangue-material, followed by (2) elimination of sulphur and iron from the molten matte, by oxidation and fluxing, leaving metallic copper. The definition is made broad enough to cover the general practice, whether or not the ore or concentrate is given a preliminary roast for the removal of surplus sulphur. The above process, which I will designate as the smelting process, makes necessary the presence in the ore, or the addition thereto, of such silica, lime, and iron as may be necessary for the formation of a light and fusible slag, together with sufficient sulphur and iron for the formation of copper-matte, and also the addition to the matte of sufficient silica for the oxidation and fluxing-out of the iron. These items, together with the cost of fuel sufficient for melting the mass, constitute important items of cost in the copper-smelting process. Numerous cases where fluxing-materials are scarce or dear, or where fuel is expensive, have caused special attention to be given recently to the wet process of copper-extraction, which may be designated as consisting of forming soluble copper salts which are then washed or leached out of the ore or concentrates by dissolving in water or acid. EVERYONE is familiar with the story of the poor Indian and his leaking tepee. He couldn&apos;t repair the leak while it was raining, naturally. And when it wasn&apos;t raining, where was the incentive? Even if this traditional Indian was apochryphal, his counterparts are certainly alive today, and operating on a world-wide scale. - A recent issue of the Wall Street Journal, for example, carried an impassioned letter from an old cocoa planter, who wants the world to know why the price of cocoa has gone skyrocketing. For years, he says, British and American interests have bought cocoa at the cheapest possible price and, incidentally, from growers willing to sell at that price. Between them, they didn&apos;t put enough money back into the business, either to fight disease in the cocoa groves or to plant new cocoa trees. Until new trees are planted and come into bearing, we will be paying exorbitant prices for our cocoa, and getting less of it.

A statistical study of machinability led the writer to examine existing data in regard to a thermal conductivity-mechanical properties relationship. Various functional relationships were proposed and the multiple correlation determined by statistical methods discussed in detail in the 1iterature.4 The relationship having the greatest engineering and statistical significance is discussed below. The data for cast and wrought aluminum alloys&apos;&apos;2 have been compiled and analyzed separately. The results of these analyses are presented in Table I. The empirical equations for estimating the thermal conductivity (cal sec-&apos; cm-I °C) are: for cast aluminum alloys K = 0.584 -0.00984/ -0.00263 Hb [1] and for wrought aluminum alloys K = 0.604 -0.00424l- 0.00170 Hb [2] where 1 and Hb are the percentage elongation and Brinell hardness number. Results of a similar analysis pertaining to stainless steel3 are also given in Table I. This empirical equation for estimating thermal conductivity (Btu per sq ft per hr per °F per in.) is K = 216.19- 1.716l - 0.0997 Hb [3] The relationship between electrical resistivity and mechanical properties was also examined for aluminum alloys using the same statistical method.
