Iron King mine, producing gold-silver-lead-zinc-ore, is 10 miles east of Prescott, Ariz. At present the 1806 level is being developed. The echelon pat tern of ore deposit continues at depth but is less pronounced, and the orebody is now more or less continuous over 2600 ft of strike length, with widths 5 ft to as high as 26 ft where overlapping of lenses occurs in one section of the mine. Better continuity of ore at depth has encouraged systematic mining and improved plant facilities to offset higher operating costs. With favorable persistence of ore at depth, the three-compartment No. 6 hoisting shaft appeared inadequate to handle increased tonnage from greater depths, and in 1952, a four-compartment steel and concrete shaft was started. This is now at a depth of 1906 ft, and shaft pockets and loading cartridges are being installed on the 1806 level. Ore from the new shaft, hoisted in 5 ½ -ton Jeto bottom dump skips, is dumped into a 500-ton shaft bin, from which it is fed to a 16x30-in. gyratory crusher and conveyed 415 ft through an undersurface concrete gallery to the secondary crusher and conveying system supplying the 900-ton mill. Lead, zinc, and pyrite concentrates are floated, and the flotation tailings are cyanided after desliming. Waste from the new shaft is dumped into a 250-ton surge bin, fed from this bin to a 24-in. conveyor, and discharged into the glory hole above the block cave. The new shaft is served by a double-drum 400-hp hoist used for ore and waste; the No. 6 shaft conveys men and material.

IN speaking, on the subject, "Engineer-Citizens," at the Lehigh Valley Mineral Industries Conference dinner, on April 26, at Easton, Pa., George Otis Smith, Director of the United States Geological Survey and President of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, said in part: "It would be carrying coke to Connellsville to bring to the Lehigh Valley the idea that mineral resources are the foundation of national prosperity. Unfortu-nately, however, this obvious, fact is not everywhere recognized. Too many of our economists, journalists, statesmen and other dopesters of present business con-ditions stress the human factor so strongly that they overlook the material with which men work out their destiny. To them the financial psychology of Wall Street and the political logic of Capitol Hill and the business commonplaces of Main Street all loom far larger than the geology of the Lehigh Valley or the engineering triumphs of Bethlehem, or, the creative thinking at Lehigh and Lafayette. "The present situation in the industrial and .business world is a complex of interacting causes and reacting effects not easily itemized and entered on our trial balance sheet. But, chief among the liabilities of today is the excess of production capacity in most branches of industry. The farmer has no. monopoly in his desire for relief. Whether your professional connections are with steel or cement, coal or oil, copper, or zinc, you; know too well that for, the moment America is over-engined, and you keenly realize the ever-present hazard of industry speeding up regardless of the curves or grades just around the corner.

THOUGH known as the platinum-group metal- the sextuplet, platinum, palladium, iridium. rhodium, osmium, ruthenium, might well be called the American metals or perhaps Pan-American metals, as the ore containing them eras first discovered in South America, and in recent years the largest production has come from North America. The South American alluvial deposits, which also, contain gold, are in active production, as are the alluvial platinum deposits of Alaska, but the main production is from the copper-nickel ores of Sudbury, Ontario. The Russian deposits in the Urals were the source of most of the worlds platinum for about 100 years, but since 1934 have assumed second place. For a time considerable amounts of platinum came from several rather rich deposits in South Africa but these were exhausted quickly. However, a tremendous reserve of lower-grade ore exists there, which could be worked profitably if the price of platinum were considerably higher.

A YEAR ago, ,at the Institute's dinner, I closed my A remarks with the words: "The scientist devotes his life to the advancement of learning; the engineer gives his to the advancement of living." May 1 begin tonight where I left off then and speak first of the distinction between science and engineering? This difference is a difference both in purpose and in method: it is the sharp contrast between theory and practice; it marks the broad gap between dream and attainment. Sometimes it happens that the investigator is also the builder and applies what he discovers, yet the distinction between science and engineering serves to point out the broad dependence of the engineer upon his brother the scientist. You remember .the old - saying that "where there is no vision the people perish" translate this into modern experience and we may say that "where there is no science, the engineer fails."

THE formal outline of Mr. Hague's life and work is embraced in the following statement, chiefly based upon data furnished by him, at my request, shortly before his death. At that time the probability that I would survive to record his death was apparently small; but I urged upon him the duty of providing, whether for me or for my successor as Secretary of the Institute, trustworthy material for the notice which somebody would some day have to write-and which might otherwise be incomplete or incorrect. Mr. Hague, with characteristic promptness and freedom from affectation, did what I asked of him; and I am therefore . able to present an authoritative sketch-concerning the details of which I shall add my own comments, and some particulars obtained from others of his personal friends. James Duncan Hague was born Feb..24, 1836, at Boston, Mass., where his father, Rev. William Hague, D.D., an eminent clergyman, then resided. After a preliminary, education in private. schools, be studied in 1854 at the, Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard University; in 1855 and 1856 at the University of Göttingen, Hanover; and from 1856 to 1858 at the Royal Mining Academy of Freiberg, Saxony. In 1859-1861 he was attached as chemist to a South Sea exploring expedition, sent by W. H. Webb, of New York, to examine Jarvis, Baker, and other islands for phosphate-deposits. After the outbreak of the Civil War, he entered the U. S. Navy, serving for a year as Judge Advocate to the fleet stationed at Port Royal, S. C. In 1863 he became Superintendent of the Albany and Boston copper-mine, in the Lake Superior region, where he was also connected with the earliest development of the Calumet and Hecla property. MINE VENTILATION is an important factor in mine maintenance as well as having direct bearing on labor efficiency. Effective ventilation systems are costly, especially those for the deeper mines, but with intelligent direction the worth of a system is usually greater than its cost. In most mines using mechanical ventilation, and practically all deep mines, it has been found beneficial to equipment, timber, and the ground, to run the fan or fans continuously even though production has been curtailed or entirely suspended. Therefore, economies in ventilation may be overlooked when general cost reductions are necessary. The operating costs of a well-designed ventilation system should be capable of reduction during periods of curtailed or suspended operations. A mine that is ventilated by splits, or that can be sectionized, can reduce its fan-power costs considerably, and provisional divisions can sometimes be made in other mines, in which the air is ordinarily coursed through all the workings, without harmful effects.

In October 1939, a drilling program was commenced on the Atlantic seaboard of Brazil, with three steam rotary rigs of medium capacity. One of these was assigned to the State of Alagbas and the other two to the State of Bahia. During the remaining few months of 1939 and during the year 1940, some eight wells were drilled, two in Alagbas and six in Bahia. Two small producers were found in the latter state. In early 1941 three medium-weight Diesel rigs were added to the equipment, thus permitting the drilling of some 15 wells during the year 1941. The two small producers found in 1940 in the State of Rahia were near the city of Silo Salvador. In 1941 three additional small wells were brought in, in the same area, and a further producer on an isolated structure some 75 km. to the northwest of this production. No commercial production has been found in the State of Alagbas. Approximately 26 wells have been drilled or are drilling, six of which are producers— five in one area and one in another. The program for 1942 calls for the development of the two areas in which wells have been found and also the drilling of several wildcat structures located either by geophysics or surface geology. All production in the area of the several producing wells is somewhat less than 2000 ft. and in the other area about 3800 ft. The area of the several wells is known as the Lobato field, and is practically within the city limits of Sao Salvador. The area 75 km. northwest of the city will be known as the Candeias field.

Production of petroleum and natural .gas increased in Canada in 1940 over the previous year. Alberta produced more than 97 per cent of the total Canadian production of 8,718,053 bbl. of oil, an increase for this province of nearly 12 per cent, whereas in Ontario and New Brunswick, where the production is relatively small, there was a slight decline. In Alberta the main producing field is Turner Valley, on the eastern edge of the foothills southwest of Calgary, and development continued in this field in 1940 with the completion of 36 wells, all of which obtained production. In the Red Coulce field, close to the International Boundary, near Coutts, no new wells were drilled and the seven producing wells showed a decline of 900 bbl. below the previous year. Also, in the Wainwright field of east central Alberta, four wells, yielding heavy crude oil, produced 4000 bbl. less oil than in 1939, owing possibly rather to discontinuous operation than to actual decline in potential yield. This decline was more than offset by production from a new field 40 miles northeast of Wainwright, at Borradaile, producing oil of 14" to I 5° A.P.1. There was a small increase in production during 1940 from the Del Bonita field, in southern Alberta, where the production is from two wells. The outstanding development of the year was the completion of Standard Oil Princess No. 2 well in the Steveville area, on the Plains 100 miles east of Calgary. This well was completed late in December with an initial flow1 of 520 bbl. of 26.3" A.P,I. oil, and 12,750 M cu. ft. of gas from the upper part of the Mississippian limestone. It has opened up a new field and given a further proof of the potentialities of the Southern Plains. The production of petroleum in Canada is shown in Table I. Since most of the yield comes from Alberta, the production is shown from the various fields in Table 2. The sale value of the petroleum produced in Canada in 1940 exceeded 11.1 million dollars, which is still somewhat less than the value of the natural gas production, shown in Table 3. SEVERAL recent determinations of the melting S point of pure chromium have been reported which give values of 1845°C1; 1895°C,² 1930°C,³ 1860°C,' and 1890°C.5 because of this wide spread of values, it appeared desirable to make one additional attempt to obtain a more accurate, reliable figure. bloom and Grantx recently reported a phase transformation in chromium:.--- it was desired to check this, too, in the course of checking the melting point. To accomplish this, a much higher purity chromium was required. Electrolytic chromium containing about 0.5 pct 0 was crushed to a finer size and was then annealed in highly purified, dried hydrogen at 1375°C for 100 hr. This treatment produced chromium with about 0.008 pct 0, 0.002 pct N, and negligible carbon. The balance of the impurities was 0.3 pct Fe, 0.03 pct Si, 0.004 pct S, and less than 0.001 pct Mo. This chromium was melted in a stabilized zirconia crucible under pre-purified argon, using induction heating. Temperature measurements were made with annealed wolfram-molybdenum thermocouples and a Leeds and Northrup Speedomax Recording Potentiometer. The thermocouples were annealed for 1 min in hydrogen at a temperature of about 2400°C. Each leg of the thermocouple was immersed in an ice-water mixture using mechanical connectors to the lead wires. The thermocouple tip was immersed in the molten chromium in a zirconia protection tube which introduces an error of about 3°C as a temperature drop through the walls of the tube. The weight of chromium was about 183 g. The dimensions of the melt in the crucible were about 1.25 in. diam x 2 in. high. The tip of the thermocouple was held about ½ in. from the bottom of the crucible. Two new thermocouples were used with the above set-up giving the results shown in Table I. Since this chromium is purer than that used by Greenaway, Johnstone and McQuillan,' by Carlile et al.,4 and other investigators,²,3 it is believed to be the more accurate. Thermocouple aging effects which are believed responsible for the high value of 1930°C³ were avoided in this work. This value of 1903°C is correct to about ±10°C. The right hand column lists the temperature of the a ? ß transformation on heating and the ß ? a on cooling.3 A sample curve is shown in Fig. 1. The value so determined is 1840°C + 15°C. The Mn-Sn binary system, investigated at the high-manganese end and between 500° and 1000° C, shows four phases at temperatures below 727"C, namely the u Mn, the p Mn, the Mn3 Sn, and the Mn, Sn phases, while at higher temperatures only the last three phases remain stable. The solubility of tin in a Mn is very small and the maximum solubility of tin in P Mn phase appears to be abollt 10 at. pct Sn. The solubility range of the Mn,Sn and the Mn, Sn phases is 23.0 to 26.0 and 37.0 to 40.0 at. pct Sn, respectively. The lattice parameter of the 13 Mn phase increases with increasing tin content. The Mn, Sn thase is hexagonal with and appears to be basically of the Ni3 Sn type structure except that for quite a few X-ray diffraction lines the calculated and observed relative intensities do not agree well. The Mn-Sn binary system has been studied by several investigators.''~ Their results indicate that three intermediate phases, namely, the Mn3Sn, Mn,Sn, and MnSn, phases, exist at high concentrations of tin. However, so far the proper phase equilibrium has not been established at the manganese-rich end and very little data is available for the composition range between pure manganese and Mn3Sn. Moreover, earlier investigators differ in their opinion about the exact composition range at which the Mn3Sn and Mn,Sn phases appear and some doubt has been cast by some investigators3 regarding the structure of Mn3Sn phase which has been reported to be isotypic with Ni3Sn (Mgscd type) structure. In this investigation an attempt has been made to establish the proper phase equilibrium between pure manganese and Mn + 50 at. pct Sn composition in the temperature range of 500" to 1000°C. PROCEDURE The raw materials used were from three different sources. For exploratory work five alloys containing 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 at. pct Sn were prepared using 99.9 pct pure manganese and tin supplied by E. Merck & Co., Germany. The rest of the alloys and one more 25 at. pct Sn alloy were prepared using 99.9 pct Mn supplied by Gallard Schlesinger Chemical Mfg. Corp., U.S.A., and 99.999 pct Sn supplied by Semi Elements Inc., U.S.A. Weighed amounts of manganese and tin were melted in recrystallized alumina crucibles in an inert gas (argon) high-frequency induction melting furnace. By careful control of temperature and time of melting the losses were reduced to below 0.2 pct in all cases. Since the losses were very small, no attempt was made here to analyze the samples chemically. Alloys were wrapped in molybdenum foil and sealed in small evacuated fused silica capsules. The alloys were annealed at different temperatures, controlled within + l°C, for sufficiently long periods to attain proper phase equilibrium, and subsequently quenched in cold tap water. The annealing periods used at different temperatures were 15 days at 500°C, 7 days at 600°C, 5 days at 700" and 750°C, 3 days at 800°, 850°, and 900°C, 2 days at 968"C, and two alloys annealed at 968°C were reannealed for 10 hr at 1000° C. From each annealed specimen, a part was utilized for metallographic study while another piece was used for X-ray diffraction study. 1.0 pct HNO, solution and oxalic acid solutions of concentrations 0.05 to 1.0 pct were used for etching Mn-Sn alloys above and below the MnsSn composition, respectively. Since all alloys were brittle, X-ray specimens were prepared using the as-crushed -325 mesh alloy powders. Only one 25 at. pct Sn alloy powder was reannealed in an evacuated silica capsule at 800°C for 5 min and water-quenched. X-ray diffraction patterns . for the Mn3Sn phase with the as-crushed and the reannealed powders did not show appreciable change. Un-filtered iron radiation at 25 kv, 15 ma was used with either Norelco 114.6-mm-diam Debye Scherrer Camera (for phase identification) or Norelco 12-cm-diam symmetrical focusing camera (for lattice parameter determination of the 6 Mn phase). The estimated accuracy of lattice parameter determination for the focusing camera was * 0.001A. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS The results of metallographic and X-ray diffraction study made with different alloys are shown in Fig. 1. The variations in lattice parameter with composition for the p Mn and the Mn3Sn phases are given in Tables I and 11, respectively, and the lattice parameter as a function of composition for the p Mn phase is shown in Fig. 2. The lattice parameter of the p Mn phase increases with increasing tin content while for the Mn,Sn phase the data obtained from two two-phase alloys and one single-phase alloy indicate increase in a,, and decrease in c, parameters with increasing tin content. The Candelaria deposit was first discovered by Spanish prospectors in 1863; but its silver ore was not exploited on a large scale until 1873, when the Northern Belle mine was opened. The first Northern Belle mill was built at Belleville, 13 km (8 miles) to the northwest. From 1876 to 1886 the Northern Belle paid over $1 million in dividends each year. In 1882 a 43 km (27 miles) pipeline was built to Candelaria from the White Mountains to the west to furnish water for the mills and town at Candelaria; it was 100 mm (4 in.) in diameter, hand- riveted, and made in England. Sections of this pipe are used. as claim posts today. At its terminus at Metallic City, above Candelaria, a large concrete reservoir was built and called Metallic Lake. It is being used today by Candelaria Partners. Production at Candelaria declined after the mid-1980s, revived for a short period in the early 1890s, and during the 1920s a 300 ton mill operated for three years. Candelaria Partners is owned jointly by Occidental Minerals and Congdon and Carey, with Occidental being the operator. An engineering study done in mid-1979 resulted in engineering for the plant commencing in late that year and heap leaching being started in September 1980. Two million tons of ore per year containing 108 g Ag and 0.28 g Au per mt (3.15 oz Ag and 0.008 oz Au per st) will be mined from the Lucky Hill and Mount Diablo .areas about 1.6 km (1 mile) up Pickhandle gulch from the heap leaching operation. Waste -to -ore ratio is about 2:l. Ore is mined by front-end loaders and hauled by 85 ton trucks to the primary crusher, a 1,070 by 1,780 mm (42 by 70 in. ) gyratory. Primary crushed ore is conveyed to a stockpile of 10,000 tons live capacity from which it is reclaimed by hydraulic reciprocating feeders and conveyed to the crushing and agglomeration facility. This unit is composed of a 1.8 m by 2.6. m (6 ft by 12 ft) double deck screen, a 2.1 m (7 ft) standard cone crusher, and three conveyors. At the conveyor transfer points NaOH and NaCN solution is sprayed on the ore as it falls through a row of 75 mm (3 in.) hanging steel bars. During this process of turning and dividing the ore, the fines agglomerate with the coarse ore to give better percolation for the leach solution on the heaps. Provision was made for the later addition of 2 kg per mt (4 lb per st) of cement to aid in the agglomeration. Agglomerated ore at minus 50 mm (2 in.) size is then conveyed to a 390 mt (430 st) loadout bin where it is transferred to 85 ton rear dump trucks for haulage to the leach pads.

Equipment was constructed which permitted the hot compression of 99.8 pct Armco iron and 2.8 pct Si steel at constant true strain rates of 0.05 to 1 per sec over the temperature range 600" to 1000°C. A maximum true strain of 1.9 could be attained, followed by immediate quenching or by isothermal annealing. True stress-true strain curves were obtained, and the steady-state flout stress, a, strain rate, i, and temperature, T, were found to fit the following expression: The constants A, a, n', and AH were determined for the two ,materials. The activation energies obtained for Arrnco iron and silicon steel are 66 and 80 kcal per mole, respectively, and approximate those for seu- diffusion and for creep. This indicates that hot compression is a diffusion-controlled thermally activated process. THE hot compression of iron and steel is usually carried out in the austenite temperature range,1"7 as this is the one of greatest interest with respect to industrial hot working. However, a disadvantage of testing in the austenite range is that the hot-worked structure is destroyed by the phase transformations taking place during cooling. The present study was therefore carried out in the ferritic temperature range, and the hot-worked substructures were preserved by rapid quenching after deformation. The substructural results will be described in a separate paper, and the present communication is restricted to the strain rate/stress/temperature relationship observed during hot working. The results of hot-compression testing are usually given in the form of true stress/true strain curves, with a different curve for each temperature/strain rate ~ornbination.',~,~ Sometimes simple algebraic equations are fitted to the curves, so that certain extrapolations or interpolations can be performed.1'2'5 These equations are, however, devoid of mechanistic interpretations. The present study was undertaken to show that hot compression can be described by an equation of the type used in creep studies. That is, it will be shown that the temperature dependence of the strain rate in hot working is well-represented by an Arrhenius term, with an activation energy similar to that for creep. Also it will be seen that the stress dependence of the strain rate is similar to that for creep EXPERIMENTAL METHOD AND MATERIALS The investigation was carried out with the following three ferrous materials: 1) Armco iron; 2) Armco iron with 0.26 pct Mn; 3) 2.8 pct Si steel. The first two materials were utilized for investigations performed in the temperature range 600" to 800°C; the last one was used for tests at temperatures from 600" to 1000°C. The materials were of commercial purity,* as shown in Table I. Cylinders of five different sizes were prepared by strain annealing. The resulting mean grain diameter was 3 mm in the 1-in. Armco iron and 2 mm in the other sizes and grades. Different ratios of diameter/height were used to enable the determination of the coefficient of friction. The specimen faces were provided with concentric grooves, which acted as lubricant holders during compression, as recommended by English and ~ackofen' and others.2'9 Powdered glass lubricants were applied to the samples before hot compression to decrease friction and barreling, following the practice of previous investigator~.~~~~~~~~ Different mixtures of glass powder were used for each temperature, after the determination of suitable compositions by experiment.'' Equipment for Hot Compression. Hot-compression tests were carried out on an adapted 150-ton vertical hydraulic extrusion press and also on a modified high-temperature creep machine. The modified extrusion press was used for temperatures up to 800°C. The following items were added to the press: a) a high-temperature furnace with built-in upper and lower platens; and b) a transmission assembly, which permitted the attainment of logarithmically decreasing crosshead speeds. These accessories are described in detail in Ref. 11.

The Pueblo Viejo Mine, a 7, 250 mtpd (8,000 stpd) gold-silver cyanidation plant built by Rosario Dominicana S. A., was described in Volume I of this monograph. At the time of writing that volume, Pueblo Viejo had not yet gone on-stream and operating data or costs could not be presented. Since that time this information has been obtained and several interesting modifications and an expansion have been made to the plant. Because Pueblo Viejo is the largest open-pit gold mine in the world and one of the world's leading gold-silver operations with production of approximately 31 kg (1,000 oz) gold and 125 to 155 kg (4,000 to 5, 000 oz) silver per day, the authors have updated the previous data and flow sheet. The Dominican Government, which held a 4670 interest in Rosario Dominicana S. A., completed purchase of the mine to gain full control in 1979. Rosario Resources will continue to manage the mine, at least until the end of 1980. Gold was produced at Pueblo Viejo almost 500 years ago with initial production in the year 1505. Rosario Resources became interested in the property in 1969 and found surface oxidation had rendered the upper portion of the ore body amenable to direct cyanide treatment. The treatment of the underlying gold-bearing sulfide zone is still undergoing metallurgical studies. The ore is considered to be a laterite; and because there appeared to be few boulders in the ore zone, only a 400 m (16 in. ) square grizzly was initially installed ahead of the mills when the plant went on-stream in late 1974 at a design capacity of 7,250 mtpd (8,000 stpd). Operation also proved the ore to be harder than was originally anticipated. During 1967 a 1. 25 m by 1. 5 m (48 in. by 60 in. ) jaw crusher was installed to -feed the 1, 000 mt (1, 100 st) mill bin. Minus 200 mm (8 in.) crushed ore is fed directly to two 5.5 m by 1. 8 m (18 ft by 6 ft) semi-autogenous mills re-powered with 750 km (1,000 hp) motors and 50 mm (2 in.) grates. Each mill product is screened at 13 mm (1 /2 in.) by a vibrating screen. Screen oversize from each mill is combined on a single return belt equipped with a magnetic head pulley for grinding ball removal. The non-magnetic oversize is then split into two fractions for return to the primary mills. Originally, a minus 6 mm (1/4 in ) product was made on each screen and fed to a 300 kw (400 hp) 2.6 m by 3. 7 m (8-1/2 ft by 12 ft) regrind mill. I. INTRODUCTION. THE list of our past-Presidents comprises the names of runny who, in their official addresses, have sketched the current progress of the arts and professions with which they were familiar. Such addresses are, in my judgment., highly useful, setting forth the results of our own work as a. society, and recalling to our minds the particular lines in which discussion would prove most fruitful. . Following this course with some hesitation, I venture to offer an outline of the recent improvements and the present situation in minim and metallurgy in the Western United States. The wonderful advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity have all combined to aid these arts to such an extent that. progress during the last decade has undeniably been more rapid than ever before in the history of the profession.. In all mining countries improved transportation-facilities, in many instances called into existence by the traffic created by the mines themselves, have done much- to enlarge the. field of operations by the reduction of freight-, operating- and living-expenses, thereby bringing lower-grade properties into the producing class. Under normal' conditions, as the age of a district in¬creases, all these differentt factors should combine to off-set. the augmented costs attendant on deep mining, and greatly tend to prolong the profitable life of the mines. OUTOKUMPU, a large copper mine in eastern Finland, has the distinction of being one of the few important mines in the world discovered by a geologist the late Otto Triistedt, of the Geological Sur- vey of Finland, having found the out- clop in 1910 by tracing glacial ore boulders, some of which had been carried as far as fifty kilometres. As the mine had no connection with either railways or waterways and the possibilities of transport were poor, the owners first tried the Hybinette hydrometallurgical process to extract the copper. The raw ore was finely crushed, treated by a sulphatizing roast. and then leached. The resulting solution was electrolyzed, using lead anodes. The largest deposits of chromite in the United States occur in tabular layers in the lower part of the Stillwater Complex, Montana. Nearly 900,000 long tons of chromite concentrates have been produced from mines and mills in this area, and reserves equivalent to more than 2,500,000 long tons of Cr2O3 remain in the ground. Layered concentrations of chromite (known as chromitite zones) occur only within olivine-rich layers of the Peridotite member of the Ultramafic zone of the Stillwater. As many as thirteen chromitite zones, lying conformably one above another, have been found, but only five of them are thick enough to be of any conceivable economic interest, and only two of them have been mined to date. Individual chromitite zones can be recognized by their distinctive internal character and by their stratigraphic position in the Peridotite member. The chemical composition of chromite varies consistently between and within the different chromitite zones. The zones range in thickness from about an inch to more than 12 feet, and the Cr2O3, content of their chromite ranges from 36.6 to 49.2 weight per cent. In any given area, the G chromitite zone is the thickest, but the chromite of the H chromitite zone has the highest grade. Laterally, the thickness of the chromitite zones is related to the thickness of the Peridotite member; in general all are thicker in the eastern part of the Stillwater than in the western part.

The intermetallic compounds NpAl2, NpAl3, and NpAl have been prepared, and examined by X-ray diffraction methods. The compounds are isostructural with the corresponding U-Al compounds. NpAl3 is face-centered cubic with a = 7.785A and has the MgCu2 structure. NpAl is simple cubic with a = 4.2624 and has the AuCU3 structure. NpAl4 is body-centered orthorhombic with a = 4.428, b = 6.268, and c = 13.71A. The published description for the atomic positions in UAl, applies also to NpAl4 THE U-Al system has been examined by Gordon and Kaufmann.1 They identified the following intermetallic compounds: UAI2, UAl3, and a third, tentatively identified as UAl5. A structure analysis of the latter compound by Borie2 proved that the formula UAl4 was more consistent with the X-ray data. The crystal structures of UAl2 and UA have been reported by Rundle and Wilson.3 UAl2 was found to be isostructural with MgCu. The atomic positions in the simple cubic UA1, cell were found similar to those in the AuCu3 structure. Three analogous compounds exist in the binary system Np-Al. X-ray data for the compounds NpAl2, NpAl3, and NpAl4 are reported below. The neptunium used in the investigation was supplied through the courtesy of the Argonne National Laboratory as neptunium (V) nitrate. It was stated to have a radioactive content of 99.25 pct Np237. The impurity limits had been established by a spectrographic analysis given in Table I. Any titanium, boron, or bismuth impurity should be effectively removed during the fluorination of NpO2 to NpF4, and sodium, lithium, magnesium or strontium during the alloying procedure. The oxalate ignition technique, described by Westrum for the preparation of finely-divided reactive PuO2, was used.The neptunium (V) nitrate solution, containing 100 mg Np, was evaporated to dryness on oxalic acid crystals. The resulting oxalate was calcined to NpO, by heating in platinum at 650°C for 2 hr. An equimolar mixture of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and purified hydrogen was passed over the NpO2 for 2 hr at 500°C. According to Fried and Davidson" the above fluorination conditions should produce the purple-black fluoride, NpF3 However, the light-green product showed only NpF4 lines on an X-ray diffraction pattern and contained only an estimated 5 pct of finely dispersed black NpF3 particles on microscopic examination. NpAl3: An intimate mixture of 50 mg of neptunium fluoride and aluminum powder (99.99 pct pure, —28 to $60 mesh) was heated to 900°C in a BeO crucible in vacuum by a tungsten coil for 2 hr, to allow the following reaction to proceed: NPF4 + 7Al + NpAl, + 4AlF. [1] The formation and sublimation of aluminum mono-fluoride in this system was verified from an X-ray diffraction analysis of the sublimate. The diffraction pattern was similar to one obtained in the aluminum reduction of UF4 to UF3,6 showing both Al and AlF3 lines. The resulting alloy was sintered at 1100°C for 1 hr. A powdered specimen of the crystalline product was sealed in a thin-walled quartz capillary for X-ray examination. The photograph was taken on a 14.32 cm General Electric powder diffraction camera, using filtered copper radiation. The films were calibrated in terms of a NaCl standard pattern. The wavelengths used in the calculations were 1.5418A for Cu K and 1.5405A for Cu K The powder diffraction pattern showed that NpAl is simple cubic with a = 4.262 % 0.005A, and is isostructural with UA13 where a = 4.27A1 or a =
