The Ertsberg East discovery was announced by Freeport in 1979 with proven geological reserves of 45 Mt (49.6 million tons) with a grade of 2.65% copper and recoverable gold values. This recently discovered deposit is one of a cluster of skarn-type copper occurrences found within the limits of Freeport Indonesia's mining con- cession at an elevation of about 3600 m (12,000 ft) in the extremely rugged Jaya Wijaya Mountains of Irian Jaya, the Indonesian half of the island of New Guinea. The Ertsberg East lies about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) east of the Ertsberg ore body, which is also known by the Indonesian name "Gunung Bijih" or "ore mountain." For general background, the original Ertsberg ore body was first discovered by the Dutch geologist Jacques Dozy in 1938 while on a mountain climbing expedition. It was mapped and sampled by Forbes Wilson and Del Flint after a two-week harrowing trek into the mountains from the coastal swamps. A drilling program in 1967- 1968 established that the Ertsberg was a viable mining venture, containing approximately 33 Mt (36.4 million tons) of skarn-type copper ore. The deposit averaged 2.5% copper, with significant values in gold and silver. The first shipment of copper concentrates was made in December 1972, following a capital investment of $200 million. Following the routine production of ore from this deposit, it became necessary to consider additional sources of ore to extend the life of the mining operation. An exploration program was thus started with the initial objective of finding shallow or surface ores which could be blended with the material being mined at Ertsberg. Project geologist Frank Nelson was transferred from Freeport Exploration Co. to the Freeport Indonesia organization at the Ertsberg mine. However, the exploration work was the functional responsibility of Freeport Exploration. Del Flint had overall responsibility for the program from the Reno headquarters office and provided liaison with management in the USA and Indonesia.

The Pea Ridge iron ore deposit near Sullivan, Missouri, is a dike-like mass of magnetite enclosed in Precambrian porphyries. The ore body tops at the Precambrian surface at a depth of 1300 feet below the present surface and extends to an unknown depth. It dips nearly vertically, intersecting the dip and strike of the enclosing porphyries at an extremely sharp angle. Faulting, both pre- and post-ore, appears to be of minor consequence, and present knowledge indicates that no preferred structural conditions existed prior to emplacement. The ore body is composed of magnetite with specular hematite, quartz, apatite, and pyrite occurring as accessory primary minerals. Specular hematite in appreciable quantities occurs on parts of the cap and the footwall of the ore body. Fresh porphyry breccia is enclosed in the magnetite along the hanging wall and in the western portion of the ore body. Hanging-wall quartz-amphibole and footwall quartz-hematite occur as replacements of certain porphyries. Further alteration has caused sericitization of parts of these zones. The ore deposit is interpreted as having been formed essentially by a single injection of a magmatic differentiate with hydrothermal end phases forming the quartz-amphibole and quartz-hematite portions of the deposit.

In recent years, like many other smelters around the world, Albras has been increasing line current. The necessary adjustments to the work practices and process variables need to be made on all potlines, which in this case means on 960 cells at the same time. It was a challenging task to adjust the process parameters to the new amperage. In July 2003 potlines 2, 3 and 4 were running at 1 73 kA and the goal at that time was to reach 180 kA. Preliminary trials with 180 kA were performed on a group of 10 boosted cells on potline 3 in order to investigate possible operational problems. It was decided to increase the amperage in three steps accompanied by continual evaluation of the state of the process. In July 2004 the target of 180 kA was achieved with good operational results. This paper presents the overall results, the parameter adjustments made during the amperage increase in the booster group and how the increase was implemented on the other potlines.

The Illinois-Kentucky mining district has, since 1880, accounted for 80 per cent of all U.S. production of fluorspar. The ore deposits are of two types: vein deposits formed by fissure fillings along faults and bedding-replacement deposits formed by the replacement of strata at certain favored stratigraphic positions along minor faults and fractures. Fluorite is the chief valuable mineral in the deposits. Sphalerite and galena commonly are present in small amounts but, in some ore bodies, may form a substantial part of the valuable constituents of the ore. Calcite is the chief gangue mineral; quartz and barite Exposed strata range from Devonian are present in various amounts. through Pennsylvanian in age. Igneous intrusive rocks occur as mafic dikes and sills and intrusive breccia dikes and plugs. Structurally, the district is situated on a generally northwest- trending arch that has been sliced into a series of long, narrow blocks by normal faults that trend northeastward. The structural The localization of the ore deposits by faults and fractures, the association of fluorite mineralization with intrusive breccias, and various lines of petrographic and geochemical evidence indicate that the fluorite-zinc-lead deposits were epigenetic and deposited by solutions emanating from a deep alkalic magma.

The Year Book of the Institute is mailed with this Bulletin. Its membership lists, both alphabetic and geographic, are corrected to Jan. 1, 1918, but its list of officers is revised inn accordance with the elections in February, 1918. The amendment to the Constitution, relating, to qualifications for membership, adopted at the same time, is also inserted in its proper place. We would call attention to the Honor Roll, heading the list of membership. This includes the names of those whom we know (in February, 1918) to be on active military duty, as well as those who are rendering emergency service to the Government in other branches. We are aware that the list is not complete, and shall be grateful for information as to any omissions or corrections. Because of the rapid movement of the military members, their addresses have been omitted from the alphabetic list. Mail addressed to such members, and sent to the office of the Institute, will be forwarded to the best of our information at the time.

FROM almost every point of view, petroleum was "strategic mineral number one" during the World War that ended in 1945. Even the spectacular advent of the atomic bomb in the final days of the conflict did not displace it from its position of prime importance, although within a few years uranium will almost certainly be the "number one" material in the minds of military strategists, if it is not even now in that position. But both as fuel and as raw material for chemical industries, petroleum will hold the center of the stage for many years to come. Hardly any other substance illustrates so fully the manner in which science and technology may be combined to achieve the utmost success in contributing to human efficiency and comfort. CLEAR sunny skies that prevailed all through the 175th General Meeting of AIME were not the 1east of the details that resulted from the many months and man-hours of p1anning by the Southern California Local Section. Some 2600 persons left the 1953 Annual Meeting technically enlightened, having had a choice of over 300 papers presented by 400 authors to listen to, learn from, and criticize. During the meeting, Mike Haider turned over the Presidency of AIME for 1953 to Andrew (Drew) Fletcher.

Several years ago a wealthy Chinese business friend of mine purchased an interest in a pro- posed oil well to be drilled a great distance from his home. A few months later it came in as a producer and proved to be a huge success and materially added to his resources. I asked him why a man of his wealth should be so lucky in a venture outside his sphere of knowledge when most people of modest means never seemed to get ahead. His answer was, "Fat Hoy takes a chance." Even though this was his answer, I knew from my association with him that there were other tempering considerations which Mr. Hoy applied before making up his mind to enter any transaction. First, he was a cautious individual. He was also a great believer in details and insisted on knowing everything possible about a situation, and finally, he was what we call a very solid individual with good basic instincts and judgment. This philosophy of Mr. Hoy may be applied to most any business but especially to those engaged in a search for natural resources such as mining where great risks are involved. This article concerns events in the history and growth of Banner Mining Co., with which I have been associated for 27 years in capacities from mine surveyor to vice president. Mr. Hoy's philosophy has played a significant role in the exploration projects of this company over the years, but what is more important, the officers, directors, and controlling interests in Banner have been aggressive in their search for ore reserves.

Curious petroleum, mining and metallurgical engineers together with oceanographers, geologists, geophysicists and those in related disciplines, some 11,500 of them, poured into the Albert Thomas Convention Center in Houston, Tex. to see, and learn. This year's successful Conference, held April 22-24 featured a technical offering of 145 papers presented at 28 sessions. In addition, a total of 500 exhibits were provided by 260 companies.

The war in Vietnam stretched into another decade, an American President was at the brink of impeachment, the earth was given its own day, twin tower monuments of American ingenuity were completed in New York and would stand high above the Manhattan skyline for 31 years. Inflation, oil shortages, low commodity prices and America’s 200th birthday were part of the decade — it was the 1970s. For the mining industry, the demands of the decade would be high and the challenges would be significant. Because of the many challenges that lined up in front of it, the mining industry was forced to work smarter and more efficiently. The industry also expanded its borders in search of new resources and struggled along with the rest of the world through a fuel crisis, inflation and a recession.

Industrial minerals - being the basic materials for much of the industrial activity in the world -suffer or gain in the market place with changes in that activity. The period 1970 and early 1971 has been one of little growth in many of the mineral-consuming industries, particularly those associated with building and construction. Consequently, the production of many commodities revealed little or no increase above 1969 levels. The pick-up of construction activity in the last half of 1971, however, is expected to be at an intensity which will result in an over-all good year; for example, cement shipments may, establish a record. Some industrial minerals products that bucked downward trends were those allied with the agricultural industry. Phosphate rock shipments increased, particularly from Florida which contributes over 400/c of the phosphate rock in the western world. Potash had higher sales and production for the third straight year, which means that inventories are being eased. The catch-all term of ecology is an oft-mentioned theme among industrial minerals suppliers. Specifically, the need for control of dust emissions is adding a heavy capital investment burden to many of the producers; such a burden, in fact, that plants have had to cease operations because the cost of dust collection equipment could not be born. As an order-of-magnitude estimate, dust collection equipment for cement plants can run $2-3 million for a single plant; some estimates are that the total cost of dust collection equipment in a new plant can be approximately 20% of total investment. All minerals processers have dust control expense of greater or lesser proportion.

The title of my talk is "The Gold Miner and the Future of Gold." This title might just as accurately have been stated as "Gold and the Future of the Gold Miner." Since prehistoric times gold has been sought by mankind for its beauty and its unusual physical and chemical properties. Early in the dawn of civilization it became the ultimate unit of value and lubricated trade between peoples. For at least 6000 years, gold has been used to barter for other commodities. It has been prospected for, treasured, made into works of art and personal adornment, and from time to time has been the object of conquest. Because of its predominant role in recent centuries as a basis for money, economists began to think of it solely in these terms. Annoyed by the disciplinary pressure of gold on the money manager's desire to manipulate money, the famous economist, John Maynard Keynes, characterized it as a "barbaric relic of the past", a characterization repeated by William McChesney Martin, Jr., when he was head of the Federal Reserve Bank. Gold, however, has physical and chemical properties that make it one of the most useful metals in the modern world.' It is the most ductile metal known. An ounce of gold, for example, can be drawn into a continuous wire over 35 miles long. It also is so malleable that an ounce of gold can be beaten into films ten one-millionths of an inch thick sufficient to cover 68 sq ft of surface. It has a density of 19.3 and is so heavy that 1 cu ft of gold weighs more than half a ton. Gold is nonmagnetic and has a high electric conductivity, only slightly less than silver and copper. Gold is so inert to all the chemicals found in nature that gold coins and jewelry buried beneath the soil or at the bottom of the sea for thousands of years appear to be as bright and perfect as when they were first immersed. Finally, gold has an extremely high reflectivity both to light and infrared rays. Because of these qualities, in addition to its rare beauty, industrial and artistic uses of gold have been growing rapidly. On a world basis, a recent study estimated that in 1960 about 750 tons of gold were used for fabrication, and that the amount had grown to about 1296 tons in 1968. My objective in this talk is to discuss with you the present and future supply of and demand for gold on a worldwide basis and the effect these forces are likely to have on the price the miner can expect to receive for the gold he produces. Over the last several years, unfavorable economic and political pressures on open-pit mining have placed the industry in a generally defensive position. As a consequence, there have been changes in the traditional organizational and production methods to increase operating efficiency. For example, staff groups that were once used almost exclusively for production support are now being organized as mining/environmental specialists. These specialized groups are responsible for obtaining mining permits and insuring compliance with existing permit requirements. Permit issurance and renewal continues to grow as a major budget item in open-pit operations.
