Scientifically known as sepiolite, it is represented by the formula Si12Mg8O30(OH)4(H2O)4(8H2O). Sepiolite is a natural clay mineral composed of hydrous magnesium silicate, characterized by a structure of alternating blocks and tunnels that develop in the direction of the fiber. Each structural block contains two silica tetrahedral sheets surrounding a central layer of magnesium oxide- hydroxide. Sepiolite exists in two distinct forms in nature: alpha-sepiolite and beta-sepiolite. Alpha- sepiolite is amorphous, compact, and resembles pellets that look like sea froth, hence its Turkish name Luletasi. In contrast, beta-sepiolite appears as amorphous aggregates or small, flat, round particles. These two forms exhibit different physical properties. Meerschaum was also studied by Brauner and Preisinger in 1958, who agreed that it primarily consists of sepiolite (2MgO·3SiO2·nH2O). According to these researchers, water is present in its mineral, zeolitic, crystal, and structural forms. Meerschaum is commonly used for adsorbing various liquids, as an ion exchanger, and for dispersing and insulating paraffin in the chemical industry (Gokdemir and Dogan, 2011). Sepiolite deposits of the meerschaum type are primarily found in Turkey, Somalia, Tanzania, Kenya, and Mexico. Alongside high-quality, low-density, and highly porous meerschaum, Somalia also has sedimentary sepiolite formations. The total reserves of these deposits are estimated at around 50–100 million tons (Sariiz and Isik, 1995). Meerschaum, also known as “white gold” or “sepiolite,” is a unique mineral highly prized for its lightness, heat- resistant properties, and ability to be carved into intricate designs. Found predominantly in Eskisehir, Turkiye, meerschaum mining and processing have become significant contributors to the local economy and cultural heritage. This paper explores the history, economic importance, mining practices, and environmental impacts of meerschaum mining in Eskisehir and discusses the challenges and opportunities faced by the industry.

The La Perla Mine, owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A., is located approximately 100 miles east of the City of Chihuahua in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. The mine began operations in 1958. Existing ore beneficiating facilities, consisting of heavy media and jig plants, upgrade the ore prior to shipment by rail to the Altos Hornos steelmaking complex in Monclova. Sizable reserves of two distinct ore types, which were not amenable to treatment in the existing beneficiating plant, or usable in the blast furnaces, have been mined and stockpiled in order to uncover the treatable ores. One of these ore types has been labeled "Diseminado" ore, and is low grade containing approximately 42% Fe with sulphurs ranging from 1 to 2%. The other ore type has been labeled "Pulverulento" ore, and is high grade containing approximately 65% Fe and 0.1% S, but at 80% minus 325 mesh, is too fine grained for efficient sintering. Late in 1968, Arthur G. McKee & Company became involved with the problem of improving the above ores for their efficient and economical use in Altos Hornos' blast furnaces. Early in 1969 representative samples of Diseminado ore were obtained for laboratory bench-scale testing at the University of Minnesota, Mineral Resources Research Center. Concentration tests incorporating magnetic roasting, wet magnetic separation, high intensity separation, high tension magnetic separation, anionic flotation of apatite, cationic flotation of silica and oleic acid flotation of iron were performed. Laboratory testing was concurrently carried on at La Perla Laboratory, which resulted in plans to construct a 10 TPD pilot plant. The pilot plant was operational in September, 1969. Analyzing laboratory results as well as pilot plant results, Altos Hornos and Arthur G. McKee & Company metallurgists agreed that the most promising flowsheet for the low grade Diseminado ores entailed wet magnetic cobbing, desliming, and oleic acid flotation of the non-magnetic fraction. In the U.S.S.R. three of the world's major-known phosphate deposits are located. These have an estimated reserve of 2,600 million short tons of contained phosphorus. The best known lies in the "Khibiny Massif', an alkalaic rock formation some 600 square miles in area with mountain peaks rising to an altitude of 3300 ft above the surrounding terrain. Location and Climate The Khibiny Massif lies north of the Arctic Circle in the Kola Penin-sula, 100 miles south southeast of Murmansk, at a latitude of 67° 30' north and a longitude of 35° 30' east. It is serviced by rail from Murmansk and Leningrad (900 rail miles south). Figure 1. The phosphate operations are centered about the two cities of Apatity and Kirovsk. The former has a population of 35,000 and is on the Leningrad¬Murmansk railway. Kirovsk, 15 miles to the east, is now a city of 85,000. The region is at the limit of the tree line with most of the ground cover typical tundra. The mean annual temperature is -4°C and, in a normal year, precipitation occurs on 240 days. Because the temperature does not exceed freezing for 300 days each year, virtually all of the precipitation is snow. The two towns are nestled between mountains and, because of the weather, extensive avalanche control systems incorporating major engineering construction have been introduced to divert snow slides away from the populated areas. General Kirovsk was first settled in 1923 and the apatite occurrences were recognized shortly after. In 1933, the first concentrator for the recovery of the mineral was completed, producing in its first year of operation 170,000 tons of concentrate. With the growth and demand for phosphate in the U.S.S.R., a second concentrator was erected at Apatity. It calve on stream in 1963. Because of the severe climate, in the early days mining was limited to 85 days per year. With the introduction of new techniques and improved mining methods, the season has been extended to 115 days.

"Sluggish prices for commodities and a glut of oversupply of many commodities did not stop the world’s largest mining equipment makers from showing off their latest and greatest machines and technology starting with the world’s largest equipment trade show, bauma 2016 in Munich, Germany.From April 8-14, an estimated 580,000 visitors from 200 countries visited the show that featured 3,423 exhibitors from 58 countries. While primarily a show for construction equipment, the mining footprint has grown over the years. Among the largest exhibits was that of Liebherr, which brought more than 100 products, had an outdoor exhibition stand, a stand for the components division and a career stand under the motto “Be Part of Something Bigger.” One of the biggest aspects of the exhibit was its mining products where the company staged the first-ever professional table tennis match in the 130 m3 (170 cu yd) dump body of the T 264 mining truck. The top German players Timo Boll and Patrick Franziska with their trainer Jörg Robkopf faced Austria’s singles world champion from 2003, Werner Schlager, and the reigning Team Europe champions Chen Weixing and Stefan Fegerl.“Bauma 2016 was an absolute success for Liebherr. With this year’s appearance we were once again able to show our innovative strength, performance and technological diversity to a very large and international audience from the industry. We conducted interesting discussions with numerous customers and partners from various countries and discussed new projects,” said Stefan Heissler, Member of the board of directors of the Liebherr Group.Likewise, Caterpillar, the world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment had a large presence at the show with more than 60 products and 12,000 m2 (129,000 sq ft)of exhibit space. In 1992, United States mine production of barite decreased 8.5%. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 36.9% and imports decreased by 61.6% vs. 1991. World mine production decreased 1.5%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, decreased 11.9% according to the Bureau. The declared value, c.i.f. United States port, of all imported crude barite during 1992 decreased from $42.35/t ($38.42/st) in 1991 to $40.09/t ($36.37/st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 88% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 80% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Ten¬nessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This included barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1992. The average number of rotary rigs operating (717) was 16.6% less than the 1991 average of 860 in the United States. Crude barite imports were 518 kt (571,000 st), 61.6% less than in 1991. Imports accounted for 44.7% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the United States. During the year, China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the United States with 67.2% of total crude ore imports. India followed with 31 %, and others with 1.8%. "In 2013, Coeur Mining had more than $55 million in general and administrative (G&A) costs and less than $100 million in cash flow. This year, its G&A costs stand at $30 million, down by more than 40 percent, its all-in sustaining costs have shrunk by more than 30 percent, and its cash flow is above $200 million. To realize this, the company aggressively reduced both its corporate overhead cost and operating cost and repaid more than $300 million in debt.The more robust balance sheet meant the precious-metals producer was well positioned to reap the rewards of an upsurge in commodity prices in the early part of 2016. Its stock price soared from $1.75 in January to $15.98 in August. Although the stock price has since dropped to around $9 due to a stronger dollar and a more hawkish Federal Reserve that recently raised U.S. interest rates, shifting the opportunity-cost argument away from buying gold and silver, Coeur remains attractive to analysts in light of its prudent spending and improved fundamentals.Focus on balanced portfolioCoeur is the largest primary silver producer and one of the largest gold-producing companies in the United States and one of the largest silver companies in the world. Incorporated in 1928, the U.S.-listed company has a total of five operations: three in the United States, one in Mexico and one in Bolivia. About two-thirds of its revenue comes from the United States.The company is conscientious about having a balanced portfolio, so no single mine accounts for more than about 30 percent of its business. Being in three different jurisdictions provides further diversification, and its revenue split of about 60 percent from gold and 40 percent from silver gives it some metals mix. PotashCorp?s Aurora phosphate mine, in Beaufort County, NC, operates four low pressure boilers and four high pressure boilers to meet its process steam requirements. Maintaining these boilers is critical to meeting production demands. Processing phosphate ore into phosphoric acid requires large amounts of sulfuric acid and steam. Ore is mined from the phosphate deposit with large bucket excavators after 9 to 30 m (30 to 100 ft) of overburden is removed. The phosphate ore is mixed with water to make a slurry that is pumped to the mill. Elemental sulfur is burned in the presence of air to make sulfuric acid. This process is highly exothermic and boilers produce steam while cooling the process. The phosphate ore is reacted with sulfuric acid and the resulting products are refined into different grades of phosphoric acid for fertilizers, feed stock and food additives. Plant operators at the mine were challenged with boiler feed water that was high in silica and other contaminants. As a result, boiler operations were experiencing difficult, labor-intensive operations and equipment deterioration. This resulted in higher operating costs and diminished processing performance. The facility was operating an aged boiler feedwater pretreatment system that included warm lime softening followed by pressure filtration and a cation/anion/mixed bed demineralizer system. The demineralizer required frequent regeneration and chemical usage was high and costs were difficult to predict. Depressurized well water (DPW water), used for plant utility water and boiler makeup, is very high in silica, in the range of 60-70 ppm. Silica can form scale at pressures below 600 psig. Above 600 psig, silica starts to volatize, carrying over with steam to potentially form deposits on downstream equipment and processes. Mine officials decided to upgrade the boiler feedwater pretreatment system to a state-of-the-art reverse osmosis (RO) membrane system. This new system, which started up in March 2009, has improved operating performance and reduced water consumption and overall operating expenditures.

"In the early 1920’s, the City of Tulsa, Oklahoma constructed an approximately 8,238-foot long tunnel, the Tiawah Tunnel, through bedrock. Voids behind the concrete tunnel liner were detected via probe drilling in early 2000 as part of an interior visual condition assessment. In 2012 and 2015, conditions along the entire tunnel were efficiently assessed through geophysical investigation using ground penetrating radar (GPR) along the inner tunnel crown and at various select locations within the tunnel. Fifty-seven (57) potential voids, extending up to 19 inches in depth and 12 feet in width, were detected with 1,000 MHz GPR and confirmed through probe drilling with approximately 80% accuracy. GPR proved to be an efficient and reliable technology for void detection behind concrete tunnel lining. This paper highlights the geophysical investigation and how geophysical efforts were combined with other investigation efforts to definitively determine the presence of voids outside of the tunnel lining.INTRODUCTION The city of Tulsa, Oklahoma has a population of about 400,000 people. The original source of water for the city was the Arkansas River. The first pumping operation provided untreated water to homes and businesses in 1904. The residents of Tulsa found this water to be unacceptable due to the high levels of salt and gypsum present. As the city grew, land and storage/treatment facilities were acquired in order to obtain and distribute a more suitable raw water. The raw water needs for the city are currently satisfied by transport and treatment of about 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water from surface water sources. Water is transported many miles from Spavinaw/Eucha and Oologah lakes to Yahola Lake and the Lynn Lane Reservoir (totaling over 3-billion gallon capacity). From here, the raw water is treated and transported to the various customers (City of Tulsa 2015). The Tulsa Metropolitan Utility Authority (TMUA) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the raw water transport system."

Currently two of the most important characteristics of construction aggregates are (a) the particle size distribution (psd) and (b) the “shape” of the aggregate particles. The long established test methods and standards for these properties require substantial resources and most suppliers can take samples and conduct tests at intervals measured in days (psd) or even months (shape). Furthermore these tests require time: so the results are available only after material has been stockpiled or shipped. In the rare cases where problems are found the out-of-spec material has often been shipped to points unknown. There are substantial advantages to be obtained if the psd and other geometrical properties could be obtained from the material as it moves through the production processes and if the results could be reported back within seconds or minutes to Plant Control Managers. This paper describes a single on-line system used to evaluate production of crushed material in a production quarry. The system consists of an enclosure (containing the camera and lighting etc.) mounted over a production belt. Images are fed by fiber optic cable to a nearby control room where the data are analyzed; stored; displayed; and made available for integration into a process control system. Numerous forms of display can be created according to the needs of the producer. Once programmed by an automation engineer all functions of operation are fully automated. The system has permitted over 400 tests per hour with a feed back time less than 2 seconds. Sufficient geometrical measurements are made so that many different “shape” factors can be computed on a similar time scale. The paper summarizes the results from approximately 100 shifts of about 8 hours each and compares the imaging method with the current standard hand methods. Study of the data generated showed that, when combined with additional plant information, the system can be used to generate additional useful control information.

"Tunnel professionals should inform project stakeholders on the reality that tunnel projects are not 100 percent devoid of the need for excavations or public inconveniences during both design and construction phases. Competing stakeholder objectives to limit these disruptions must be weighed against the need to mitigate risks and to produce a constructible, operable and maintainable end product. Perhaps the approach we should take with stakeholders, also known as Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), is sharing memorable case studies that bring to life the potential risks so often buried within lengthy risk registers. This paper provides a sobering case study describing what can occur if the presence and/or location of utilities and other obstructions are not fully understood due to restrictions placed on exploration or mining operations. In this instance, the Microtunnel Tunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) encountered a buried concrete structure, followed by rows of abandoned wood piles, before finally colliding with an active high-pressure gas main under a bustling coastal highway. Multiple stakeholders imposed tight logistical and other work restrictions, compounding the difficulties experienced during the drive. However, the difficulties were effectively managed through the project team’s proactive collaboration and communication with everyone involved. INTRODUCTION Some of the most important decisions that influence the ultimate success or failure of a project may not be made by design engineers. Instead, these decisions are often made by project stakeholders and third-party agencies. Tasked with protecting the best interests of their users, these agencies are cautious of potential impacts associated with project construction and subsequent use. Unfortunately, actions required (or restricted) by stakeholders often result in unwanted ripple effects that negatively affect the very users they are trying to protect. For example, a mandate limiting a shaft site to an unreasonable size may be intended to reduce local business impacts, but may actually increase impacts as more supply and truck hauling is required."

Compared to alternative ways of dealing with coal fines, oil agglomeration has always been a commercial bridesmaid and never yet a bride. Yet interest is high in the process, as shown by a number of pilot plants in operation that are funded by industry as well as government. In the past in the US, alternative ways to handle coal finer than 100 to 200 mesh included flotation, or no treatment except dewatering, or discarding the fines as waste. There are now a number of factors that tilt the economics more toward fine coal recovery. Today, the cost of mining a ton of underground coal runs from $22-30, and discarding even 10% as unrecovered fine coal is a real economic loss. A number of attempts (notably by EPRI) have been made to quantify the effect of coal cleaning on utility boiler operations. Transportation and ash handling costs, frequency of unscheduled outages, fouling and slagging problems, and boiler tube erosion are all lowered by cleaning coal. The advantage of coal cleaning on these parameters has been shown, but the dollar amount varies with many assumptions and is difficult to pin down. The message to a utility, however, has not been lost and the trend toward cleaner steam coal is accelerating. This may lead to fewer installations that only wash the coarse coal, and add back the unwashed fine coal until a maximum contractual ash limit is reached. And, as the proportion of coal fines continues to increase by continuous and longwall mining, it may become impossible to clean the coal sufficiently without cleaning the fines. Flotation and oil agglomeration are the only processes that presently deal directly with cleaning the very finest coal fractions. Flotation has proven its effectiveness in cleaning blackwater and in separating fine coal from mineral matter. It has the achievable potential for far greater pyrite rejection than is now obtained in commercial preparation plants. Mining engineers are ready to take a big step into a new field-oil mining. To understand the subject, one must look at the world's oil supply and demand as well as petroleum technology successes and failures. The US has an abundance of solid hydrocarbon and uranium energy resources, but 75% of its energy for industry, transportation, manufacturing, and space heating comes from liquid petroleum and natural gas. So there are increasing efforts to discover new oil reserves; today the number of drilling rigs operating in the US is at an all-time high. But with 80% of the world's wells already located in the US and Canada, good new exploration prospects are difficult to find. The cost of drilling deep new wells has also greatly increased. The US faced a similar situation in the early 1950s, when primary oil production declines began. During that time, the petroleum researcher introduced secondary recovery techniques such as water flooding and gas injection. This increased the average amount of extractable oil from discovered US reservoirs from 17% to 33%. Production soared and the world petroleum price remained stable until the end of the 1960s. Secondary recovery techniques were then supplemented by tertiary oil recovery technologies-increasing sweep efficiency with such things as CO2 injection-that are, so far, only partially successful in most petroleum fields. Even so, these technologies could raise cumulative recovery expectations to 35-38%. The "lost" oil in depleted US reservoirs equals 48 km3 (300 billion bbl) of conventional oil, or 12 times the current recoverable reserve base. At the present rate of US consumption-1 km3/a or 6 billion bbl/a-this is enough to run the US for 50 years without importing any oil. Moreover, there are 16-24 km3 (100-150 billion bbl) of as-yet unrecoverable heavy oil and tar sands in the US.

The economic success and growth of any metropolitan region depends on mobility. Today, mobility between New Jersey and New York is threatened by a transportation system that cannot meet 21st century travel demands. The transportation bottleneck created by the Hudson River threatens the viability of one of the world?s great centers of commerce and culture. Fortunately, there is a solution: The Access to the Region?s Core Mass Transit Tunnel. The US$8.7-billion Mass Tran-sit Tunnel?s (MTT) new two-track line will double commuter rail capacity under the Hudson and create a new, state-of-the-art cavern station in Midtown Manhattan, with wide platforms, high-speed escalators and other features to improve riders? travel experience. The capacity and other benefits of the MTT project will launch a new era of prosperity for the region, just as the Pennsylvania Railroad did almost 100 years ago when it built the existing two, single-track rail tunnels that now form the sole commuter rail link between New Jersey and New York. The existing tunnels run from North Bergen, NJ, under the Hudson River to Pennsylvania Station at 33rd Street in Manhattan. Construction on the MTT, the largest public works project in the United States, is scheduled to start this year and continue through 2017. The MTT is ready to go to construction thanks to a major commitment of financial, engineering, project management and other resources from NJ TRAN-SIT, New Jersey?s statewide mass transit agency, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a bistate agency that operates the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, the George Washington Bridge and other major transportation facilities in New York and New Jersey. The project is also strongly supported by the state governments of New York and New Jersey, as well as that of New York City. The MTT is New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine?s number one transportation priority.

INTRODUCTION The Brightwater conveyance system project in King County, Washington consists of constructing about 21 km (13 mile) of effluent and combined influent and effluent tunnels. The influent tunnels will collect sanitary sewerage from the service area and convey it to the new wastewater treatment plant (WTP) site at Route 9 in Woodinville, Snohomish County, Washington. The effluent tunnels will convey treated effluent from the WTP to an outfall at Puget Sound. The tunnels will be constructed primarily under residential areas, busy suburban roads and state highways. This 21 Km (13-mile) soft ground tunneling project faced many design challenges because of the geologic and hydrostatic conditions, long tunnel reaches, and large overburden depths. Boring depths typically varied from 45.7 M (150 ft) to 114 M(375 ft) with a maximum depth of 185.6 M (566 ft) deep. Conventional empirical methods for non-mountain terrain based on a 1:1 ratio of drilled footage per foot of tunnel bore (National Research Council, 1984) for evenly spaced borings provided a good start for the Phase 1 explorations. However a continuation of this approach with closer spacing was deemed inadequate by the geotechnical team for efficiently allocating geotechnical exploration resources for the final design. This paper presents a rational approach that was used to evaluate the value of a particular geotechnical exploration boring, pump test or other in-situ test. The method of analysis, which was initially developed for rock tunnels (Einstein et al., 1978), was modified for the Brightwater project. The method considers the potential construction cost risks resulting from variable geologic conditions, the cost and reliability of the geotechnical exploration and the earned value (cost risk reduction) of performing the geotechnical exploration. Hartman (1924-2002), Charles Washington Merrill (1869-1956) and Kenyon E. Richard (1915-1993). The inductions will bring to 197 the number of mining “greats” whose engraved photographs and biographical sketches are installed in the National Mining Hall of Fame.

Operations at the Sweet Home Mine transformed the mineral specimen industry, not only in the development of new innovative extraction techniques, but also in the fields of sample preparation and marketing. Principally as a result of the activities at the Sweet Home Mine, there is now a better appreciation of minerals and the market they encompass. Individual Sweet Home rhodochrosite specimens have been sold for more than $1 million, with many more in the five- and six-figure dollar range. This article is a review of the Sweet Home operation, with emphasis on its extraction techniques. District history The Sweet Home Mine is located within the Alma mining district in the Mosquito Range of central Colorado, approximately 6 km (3.7 mile) northwest of the town of Alma at the base of the Red Amphitheatre in Buckskin Gulch at an elevation of 3,440 m (11,286 ft). Other nearby mining districts include Climax, Leadville, Breckenridge and London. All are considered part of central portion of the Colorado Mineral Belt (Fig. 1).

The timing was right for SME to celebrate its 50th anniversary in February as a member society of AIME. The mining industry is in the midst of a commodities boom that appears to have legs. Not only is the demand for metals, construction materials and the like increasing in developing nations, but developed nations have also seen the demand for those materials increase at impressive rates. So, in addition to networking and seeing old friends, attendees at the SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Denver, CO. Feb. 25-28, had several reasons to enjoy the week — a healthy industry and their society’s landmark anniversary. This annual meeting was held jointly with the Colorado Mining Association’s (CMA) 109th National Western Mining Conference.

Explosives are used to mine coal. Any blast results in three size categories of products, namely over-, middle-, and under-size. Boulders can still be broken smaller in further operations after blasting. The under-size, for instance coal fines, negatively affects the mining efficiency. Their reduction ensures better returns. The paper concerns investigations aimed at reducing coal fines' generation. Inherent fractures are identified as one of source of fines. The discussion is therefore centered on establishing a relationship between the fracture occurrence, the explosive properties and the blast outputs evaluated in terms of the fines generated.

Greensand, greensand marl, and green earth are names given to sediments rich in the bluish green to greenish black mineral known as glauconite. The word glauconite is derived from the Greek word glaukos, meaning bluish green. The term "greensand" as a rock name for a glauconite-bearing sediment is more appropriate than "greensand marl," a term that has been doggedly perpetuated in the literature. Because of its potash and phosphate content, greensand was mined and marketed as a natural fertilizer and soil conditioner for more than 100 years. The advent of manufactured fertilizers with adjustable nutrient ratios led to a decline in the use of greensand in agriculture. The material has since been recognized as useful in water treatment. Unfortunately, despite large reserves and world- wide distribution, glauconite has not been utilized to any significant commercial extent because no major application has been found for a substance with its chemical composition and properties. This is probably due mostly to a paucity of research on its potential commercial uses. Extraction of potash received considerable attention during and just after World War I. Because of relatively high extraction costs and a generally low potash content (viz., less than 8%), glauconite lost its appeal as a source of this commodity. Historical Background Greensand was used as a fertilizer in New Jersey in the latter part of the 1700s. During the early 1800s its use became more common; applications of as much as 22.5 kg/m2 were sometimes made, although recommendations for agricultural use suggested 4.5 to 11 kg/m2 (Tedrow, 1957). Many crops, especially the forage type, were said to improve with greensand application; however, because of its slow release of potash, large quantities were required. Certain greensands that contain sulfur and sulfide minerals are harmful to plant growth, and these were classified as poison, burning, or black marls. The availability of higher grade potash salts from other mineral sources and the manufacture of prepared fertilizers displaced the agricultural use of greensand during the latter 1800s. During the mid-1800s the greensand industry, centered in a small section of the eastern United States, grossed more than $500,000/y. Toward the end of the century, however, annual production had dwindled to less than $100,000 in value. By 19 10 there were only six or eight greensand producers grossing less than $5,000/y each (Tyler, 1934). There was a brief revival of the US industry during World War I because of the curtailment of foreign potash, especially from Germany. During the latter 1940s and early 1950s greensand was again recommended as a food nutrient for plants and farm crops. Agronomic studies discussed its potential as a soil additive that gradually releases potash and many trace element nutrients essential for plant growth (Tedrow, 1957). Greensand was sold with the idea that it would condition soil and absorb and hold water while its base exchange properties would release trace elements. For a short time glauconite was used in certain parts of New Jersey as a binding additive in the brick industry, and in the 1800s it was used for making green glass (Cook, 1868). In the early 1900s the base exchange properties of glauconite were recognized for water treatment and the mineral gained acceptance as a water softener. Mansfield (1922) does not mention base exchange even though this phenomenon was known in 1916 or earlier. From 1916 through 1922 several patents for the use of glauconite as a water softening agent were granted. A method was also patented for treating greensand to improve it for water softening and ready regeneration with common sodium chloride brine (Borrowman, 1920, Spencer, 1924, Kriegsheim and Vaughan, 1930). Treated glauconite, on contact with water containing magnesia or lime, takes up magnesium or calcium ions and releases sodium ions. This exchange is limited to the outer surface of glauconite grains, and when all the surfaces have absorbed their capacity, the grains must be regenerated. Regeneration, simply stated, consists of treating or backwashing the glauconite with a sodium chloride solution, which replaces the hard water elements with sodium, thus reviving the glauconite. The process has become more sophisticated due to competition among companies in the water softening business. Greensand products for water softening generally consisted of several different grades distinguished by the particular treatment the glauconite was given during processing. The standard greensand water softener was produced from natural glauconite that was only washed and classified. Its characteristics for water softening are given in [Table 1].
