A public awareness of and commitment to abate pollution of water, air, and soil continues to stimulate demand for industrial minerals and rocks capable of neutralizing strong and weak acids. The role of acid neutralizing agents is 1) to treat acidified water and soil until the desired pH is attained and 2) to remove acid-forming compounds from industrial processes to mitigate the formation of acidic discharges. Environmental applications for these agents include: acid rain mitigation, neutralization and prevention of acidic industrial process discharges, and treatment of acid mine drainage and coal refuse. Desulfurization of industrial flue gases involves removal of sulfate compounds capable of combining with hydrogen to form acids. Details of flue gas desulfurization are covered in the previous chapter on Flue Gas Desulfurization. Ideally, the neutralization of acids results in an upward adjustment of effluent pH 7, or neutrality. The final pH value for many acid treated wastes, especially industrial discharge streams, is commonly over neutralized to pH 8.5 to 9.5. The Clean Water Act sets the upper discharge limit at pH 9. ACID NEUTRALIZATION REAGENTS Acid neutralization is accomplished by adding alkali metal and alkaline earth metal compounds to acidic water or soil until the desired pH is attained. The commonly used alkali ions are calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), and potassium (K). Sodium hydroxide, high calcium and dolomitic hydrate, high calcium and dolomitic lime (quicklime), high calcium and dolomitic limestone, soda ash, and magnesium oxide are the compounds most commonly applied to raise the pH of acidic waters or soils. Limestone and dolomitic limestone, which are calcium and magnesium carbonates, and their equivalent oxides and hydrates formed by calcination, are the industrial materials most commonly used in the manufacture of reagents for acid neutralization. Approximately 327 kt of high calcium and dolomitic lime were consumed for acid neutralization purposes in 1988. Magnesite and brucite are industrial minerals that compete with dolomitic limestone for the magnesium-oxide market. Production of caustic calcined magnesia for neutralization purposes exceeded 6 kt in 1990. Soda ash is an industrial mineral gaining increased acceptance in the neutralization of acid waste discharges. Approximately 182 kt of soda ash were consumed in 1990 for acid waste treatment or acid prevention by flue gas desulfurization. Other mineral products either consumed in minor quantities or receiving attention as future neutralizing agents include zeolite and hectorite. In some cases, waste products have been found to be suitable and cost effective for neutralization of acids. Common wastes gaining acceptance include basic slag, phosphate mining refuse, cement kiln dust, fly ash, and mine tailings.

Introduction The need to develop accurate predictive hydraulic fracturing simulators arises from the consideration of vertical containment for the fracture. Fracture height growth from a pay zone into adjacent layers has been shown (see Cleary [I]) to depend on three sets of parameters for the different strata: - elastic properties, - closure stress variations, and, -fracturing fluid leak off, and poro-elastic stresses. Qualitative analysis of the effects of these parameters has been reported in the literature. The first effects were described by Van Eekelen, using simple elasticity considerations [2]. The effect of stress variations was described numerically by Simonson and a1. [3] and experimentally by Thiercelin [4]. Effects of back stresses induced by fluid invasion on fracture propagation were considered by Cleary [5]. In order to couple these effects, a numerical code al- lowing the simulation of three dimensional growth of a hydraulically induced fracture has been developed with the ability of representing the effects of heterogeneities on fracture lateral and vertical extension. The model is based on a new variational formulation of the boundary integral representation of three-dimensional elasticity. The fluid flow and elasticity equations are solved using a moving mesh representation which offers enough flexibility to enable the simulation of any closure stress distribution. Simpler models representing fracture height growth (P3DH models) have been developed [6] [7] that approximate the fracture by a series of one dimensional segments, and the limitation of such approaches is examined in this paper. 1 Description of the model 1.1 Fracture Geometry Hydraulic fracturing simulations involve the coupling of solutions to elastic deformations, fluid flow in the fracture, and fluid leak off into the formation. Since the use of direct solution techniques (i,e,,3D finite elements) is prohibitive, the method used in this study is baaed on a boundary integral representation of the 3D elasticity equations. 1.2 3D Models The classical representation of the problem of a fracture in an infinite medium by boundary integrals is [8]: [ ] where u is the unknown displacement field, r n is the traction operator, I? is the fracture surface, and K is the Kelvin tensor of fundamental solutions to the elasticity operator. In terms of the technical problems of rib spalling in large mining height coal face, a long-distance advanced pre-grouting layer flexible reinforcement technology is proposed in this paper. Based on the mechanism and failure mode of rib spalling in the coal face, the mechanical properties of the aluminum plastic composite pipe were analyzed by using the tensile and compression experiment. The deformation and strength characteristics of “flexible pipe + grouting” specimens were studied by uniaxial compression test, splitting test, and shear test. The UDEC numerical simulation software was used to simulate the reinforcement effect of “flexible pipe + grouting” at different positions. Combined with the field application, the feasibility of long-distance advanced pre-grouting layer flexible reinforcement technology was verified. The test results show the following: The coal face has the characteristics of brittle and large deformation. The aluminum plastic composite pipe has the characteristics of good elongation and tensile strength, which can endure the large deformation of the coal face. The “flexible pipe + grouting” can improve the tensile and shear strength of coal. The UDEC numerical simulation analysis indicated that the grouting hole layout of “flexible pipe + grouting” has a significant difference in the reinforcement effect of the coal face. Compared with single row grouting reinforcement, the reinforcement effect of double row grouting holes 1.5 m and 3.0 m away from the roof is better. According to the field application, it is feasible to use aluminum plastic composite pipe as a flexible grouting pipe to reinforce coal seam with 80–100 m long-distance pre-grouting. Long-distance advanced pre-grouting layer flexible reinforcement technology can improve the daily production of coal and reduce the support cost of the coal face. As a new method of reinforcement, long-distance layered flexible reinforcement has a significant effect on the prevention and treatment of rib spalling in large mining height coal face.

Kaiser Steel Corporation, the pioneer steelmaker on the Pacific Coast, was founded by the late Henry J. Kaiser. In 1944 the Company purchased from the Southern Pacific Railroad an iron ore property 200 miles east of Los Angeles known as Eagle Mountain. Today the domestic operation of Kaiser Steel Corporation consists of the iron mine at Eagle Mountain; two coal mines, one each in Utah and New Mexico; an integrated steelmaking complex at Fontana, California; and several steel fabrication and erection facilities along the west coast. Kaiser Steel also has interest in Hamersley Iron, Ltd., Australia, and Kaiser Resources, Ltd., British Columbia. Eagle Mountain Mine is located about 80 miles east of Palm Springs and adjacent to the southeast corner of Joshua Tree National Monument. The area is one of the most arid in the world averaging only two inches of rain annually. Geologically, the mine is at the western edge of the Basin and Range Province which covers about one-half million square miles of the western United States. The Province is typified by north to northwesterly trending fault block mountain ranges separated by sediment filled valleys, Production has totaled over 82 million tons of finished products since the first shipment in June, 1947. Over 500 million tons of material have been mined from the deposit to date. Eagle Mountain Mine is noted for the pioneering use of the largest and most up to date equipment to mine and process its ore. In 1961 Eagle Mountain received the first fleet of 100-ton haulage trucks in the mining industry. There were thirteen semi-trailer units in the fleet. The first 12 to 17-yard size shovel in the mining industry was placed in operation at Eagle Mountain during 1962. Rotary drilling was introduced at Eagle Mountain in 1954 to replace churn drilling. Eagle Mountain was the first major mine to use metallized slurry when three aluminum slurries were introduced for primary blasting in 1962.

The Schaffer linear kimberlite complex and Aultman kimberlite diatremes comprise a major part of the State Line kimberlite district of Colorado and Wyoming, which encompasses approximately 200 sq mi (500 km2). The district is located along the eastern flank of the northern Front Range and is underlain prin- cipally by Precambrian granites (approx. 1.4 b.y.) which have been intruded into an older (approx. 1.75 b.y.) metamorphic complex. The kimberlite occurrences are Devonian in age and are related to older Precambrian linear structures. The Schaffer kimberlite complex is a dike or fissure system with enlargements or blows developed at the intersections of cross faults; the two Aultman occurrences are diatremes. Kimberlite within the Schaffer complex is predominately grey to green phlogopite-calcite kimberlite breccia and tuffisitic breccia. Carbonate is abundant in some phases. Inclusions of host granite are common and locally abundant. Upper mantle peridotite, pyroxenite, and eclogite and lower crustal granulite xenoliths are present at many localities. Four phases of tuffisitic kimberlite breccia occur in the Aultman diatremes. These breccias are characterized by high carbonate and serpentine contents. Xenoliths of upper crustal granite, lower crustal granulite, and upper mantle assemblages are abundant locally. Lower Paleozoic sedimentary rock xenoliths are also abundant in the Aultman diatremes but are absent in kimberlite of the Schaffer complex. From 1979 through September 1982, Cominco American, Inc., conducted geologic mapping, petrographic studies, geophysical surveys, geochemical surveys, and auger drilling in the Schaffer-Aultman project area as part of an extensive evaluation program of kimberlite occurrences. Forty bulk samples (approx. 8,000 metric tons) were excavated from the occurrences and then were processed for diamonds at Cominco American's heavy media separation and diamond recovery test plant at Fort Collins, Colorado. Indicated grades from the Schaffer and Aultman kimberlites range from approximately 0.5-1.0 carat per 100 metric tons and as such, the occurrences do not appear to approach economic viability at this time.

"Groundwater with elevated sulfate and metals was treated using a sulfate-reducing pilot PRB consisting of a series of six 55-gallon drums filled with ZVI (Fe0), wood chips, brewer’s grain, limestone, and emulsified vegetable oil (EVO). Sulfate was reduced from >3000 to <250 mg/L and Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn concentrations declined up to 3 orders of magnitude in 2 months. After 6 months of operation at a 7.5-day retention time, sulfate broke through. The system was then rejuvenated by injecting EVO in each drum and operated for 5 more months at a 9-day retention time. Sulfate-reducing bacteria in the pilot system grew by 3 to 4 orders of magnitude in 2 months. Some cementation of the PRB media was observed in the first 2 drums after processing 25 pore volumes of water, due to preferential upstream precipitation of sulfides; this can be avoided through operational modifications. Resulting permeability losses were estimated at 0.1% to 1% per year. Absorption/desorption was tested at bench scale to evaluate the use of various oil-soaked sorbents as a slow-release source of dissolved carbon. The tests show that oil sorbents can increase the useful life of a PRB between oil refills to over 100 pore volumes. INTRODUCTION High sulfate concentrations, low pH, and dissolved metal exceedances are common characteristics of mining-influenced water (MIW). Above-ground such MIW is commonly treated using biochemical reactors (BCR). In a BCR, water generally flows vertically downward through a layer of biomass, such as wood chips, manure, etc. The dissolved organics resulting from the decay of this material are oxidized first by microbes using oxygen; when oxygen is exhausted, other bacteria can use nitrate, and then sulfate to oxidize organics. Acid mine drainage is a serious water pollution problem, for its contaminants will eventually effect the quality of the receiving streams. According to the Appalachian Regional Commission (1969)1, 10, 500 miles of streams have been polluted by mine drainage, and 70 percent of this acid pollution is accounted for by underground mines. Due to the severe damage to aquatic life, to recreational and industrial use, and to domestic water supply, more stringent mining and anti-pollution laws have been legislated and coal mine operators are required to treat the mine water discharges to meet the minimum standards. For years now, abatement and treatment methods have been extensively studied. Progress reports presented in the Fourth Symposium on Coal Mine Drainage Research, 1972 1 suggest that a thorough investigation and understanding of the basin discharge is necessary in order to cope with the mine drainage problem. The extent of mine water discharge contamination can be considered as a function of the basin streamflow and acid generation load.&apos; A conservative treatment cost estimation these days is $0.40 per 1, 000 gallons for water with 100 ppm iron, 500 ppm acidity. These figures need not include collection and pumping costs nor the cost of dispersing of chemical waste by-products. To achieve optimal abatement and treatment of mine drainage, predictions of the quantity and quality of mine water discharges are needed. Basin discharge is a continuous process and it can be considered as a. macro-system. This system can be subdivided into micro-systems to describe the various mine discharge .types in the basin. The mining activities could produce acid water discharges from deep mines, stripmines, or associated gob piles. A total study entitled ?Resource Allocation to Optimize Mining Pollution Abatement Programs?* will consider all of these sources. However, this paper will discuss only one micro-system, the drift (deep) mine type. We will look at a single mine and its watershed. The total research project considers a multiple mining complex in an extensive stream basin.

It was first pointed out in 1934 by Gaudin (1) that the "oily" oxidation product of the alkyl xanthate ion-dialkyl dixanthogen, might be the "active flotation agent" on sulphide minerals and there have been a number of studies supporting this hypothesis (2,3,4). However, all of these studies have relied largely on electrochemical evidence. Galena, being a semiconductor, may be used as an electrode in aqueous solution and it was shown that ethyl xanthate ion does not adsorb with charge transfer in the absence of oxygen unless the potential of the galena surface is above -100 mv versus the hydrogen electrode (H2 E). At this potential the galena surface is slightly hydrophobic but does not become strongly hydrophobic unless the potential is raised to 210 mv (versus H2 E). It is suggested that, at potentials of 210 mv or above, ethyl xanthate ions are oxidised to diethyl dixanthogen and that chemisorption of oxygen raises the galena surface to this potential. On the other hand, examination of xanthated galena surfaces by chemical or physical methods (5,6,7) has failed to detect dixanthogen and it has been shown that dixanthogen may be reduced to lead xanthate at a lead sulphide surface. It was suggested by Leja and Poling (5) that, as dixanthogen is a neutral molecule it would not be repelled by the negatively charged galena surface so that the adsorption was envisaged as taking place through homogeneous oxidation of the xanthate ion to dixanthogen, adsorption and reduction of the dixanthogen to a chemisorbed lead xanthate species. In paper I of this series (11) it was shown that the thiosulphate ion, which forms on galena surfaces in slurries at the pH normally used for flotation, will reduce dixanthogen. There is, therefore, the impasse that the electrochemical evidence requires that xanthate ion be oxidised to dixanthogen at the galena surface while the chemical evidence shows that the reverse reaction takes place.

A number of interesting and. important phenomena were revealed during a study of the response of beryl to sulfonate flotation (1). Perhaps the most important observation is the effect of various cations on flotation response. Experiments showed that in the vicinity of pH = 3. 0, about three ppm Fe.+++ increased recovery of leached beryl from about 60 to 100 per cent, whereas about four ppm Ca++ reduced the recovery from 60 to 2 per cent. With the exception of ferric iron, all of the other cations investigated reduced flotation recoveries drastically at this pH. As postulated in the paper "Sulfonate Flotation of Beryl", (1) even with low concentrations of polyvalent cations and sulfonate (on the order of one ppm), cation¬ sulfonates are precipitated immediately in solution. That is, blueish-white clouds .were noted to form after given additions of salts to. known solutions of sulfonate. Furthermore, it was also shown that one-hundred-fold more ferric iron than necessary to form the precipitated cloud had to be added to effect complete flotation. In other words, some form of solid ferric sulfonate was found to function as the collector in these systems. The form of the compound was suggested to be Fe (RSC3)2OH and that bonding to the surface occurs through the hydrogen of the hydroxyl. As the form of this compound was shown to be dependent on the extent of hydrolysis of ferric iron, it is to be expected that ferric iron will be unique in some pH region. Further, if the presence of hydroxyl in the neutral precipitated compound is of primary importance, then other cations should function similarly but at different values of pH, since they will hydrolyze at different concentrations of hydroxyl ion. To determine whether the premise of hydrolysis is correct, the study was extended to quartz systems lit the presence of various cations at various values of pH.

Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. The limited effectiveness of the original hot water process for recovery of bitumen from certain Utah tar sands containing bitumen of higher viscosity (e.g. Sunnyside, Tar Sand Triangle)1,2 indicated that bitumen viscosity strongly&apos; influences the separation efficiency. In this regard, there should exist a critical value of bitumen viscosity above which the effectiveness of the hot water process decreases significantly. Apparently certain tar sands contain bitumen of such high viscosity that even a digestion temperature of nearly 100°C is insufficient to lower the viscosity below the critical value. In addition it seems that differences in physico-chemical forces which act between sand and bitumen are negligible in comparison to the difference in visco-mechanical forces. Predominantly mechanical forces hold viscous bitumen on the rough surface and in the pores of sand particles, resulting in strong adhesion. This phenomenon is a critical feature in the phase disengagment of oil-wetted domestic tar sands with viscosity control by temperature. Besides increasing the temperature for viscosity control the effectiveness of the original hot water process could be enhanced by control of bitumen viscosity with diluent additions. Strictly speaking this appraoch is the only possibility for heavy bitumen for which the high temperature of digestion does not lower the viscosity sufficiently. As a result of viscosity control by diluent addition the digestion temperature can be lowered which is important from an industrial standpoint. Another important consideration is that effective phase disengagement occurs only when the entire bitumen phase has the same viscosity. This means that some time (penetration time) is necessary for complete and uniform dilution of the bitumen. If the viscosity of bitumen, which is a function of temperature, diluent addition and penetration time, controls the separation efficiency, hot water processing of many different kinds of tar sands should be possible, assuming that the sand phase consists primarily of quartz-type minerals.

"Qatar’s capital Doha is undergoing major infrastructure improvements including a multiphase stormwater management program. Although located in an arid climate, Doha experiences flooding during rainfall events. Dewatering operations and rising groundwater levels add to the management needs. To address those needs, construction of the Musaimeer collection tunnel along Doha’s southern rim is being followed by a marine outfall tunnel connecting a pump station to a dispersion field 10 km offshore. Qatar’s geology is characterized by sabkha deposits, a series of predominantly weak and karstic rock strata that creates challenging conditions for mechanized tunneling, as highlighted by the uncontrolled flooding of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) used on the Doha Metro tunnels. Risk associated with these challenges is magnified for the outfall tunnel by drive length, sub-sea elevation, and a single access point. This paper describes the outfall exploration strategy and design decisions made in light of experience gained during the collection tunnel construction. CONTEXT – STORMWATER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Qatar has an arid climate with an average annual precipitation of less than 100 mm. Precipitation is mostly confined to the winter months when rare, but occasionally heavy rainfall events easily lead to flooding in Doha’s metropolitan area. Its coastal location and flat topography a few meters above the sea level mean that the depth to the groundwater table is generally shallow. The karstic aquifers in the regional dolomite and limestone series contain groundwater of high salinity, which is not suitable as a potable water source. For supplying Doha’s population of more than 900,000 (2014) with potable water, the Ras Abu Fontas seawater desalination plant is operated about 10 km south of the city. This potable water production capacity is crucial for Doha’s development and – in conjunction with overirrigation and leaking sewage tanks – is also the root cause for rising groundwater tables that have been observed over the past years."

According to the world bank1, the mining industry consumes up to 11 percent of global energy use. In comparison, 70 percent of mining projects from the six largest mining companies operate in water-stressed regions. To steer the direction of the process industries toward more sustainable practices, more than 40 governments have adopted a price on carbon. This measure includes additional taxes on the use of fossil fuels, trade programs, new standards for renewable energy, energy efficiency mandates, more stringent emissions regulation, carbon offsets, etc. This emphasis is also supported by investors shifting their priorities to reduce risk by focusing on long-term plans, including environmentally friendly operations. The metals and mining industry is at the core of the green energy mix and electrification of vehicles. This new trend creates an astronomical increase in demand for minerals. Under a 2-degree scenario, according to the latest analysis from the world bank, as new energy technologies continue to grow, it is expected that all minerals to double in demand, and the distribution of these materials will depend on their application. • Solar panels, will account for 87% of the aluminum demand, and more than 95% of silver • Wind turbines and geothermal plants will require 98% zinc and 64% titanium. • Solar and wind energy alone will demand more than 74% of the global supply of copper, and this is without considering wiring or other infrastructure to connect the grid • Battery storage accounts for 100% of the graphite and lithium demand. (Hund, 2020) • Other materials, such as nickel and steel, are also projected to more than double in demand as they are cross-technology minerals. These materials require a manufacturing process that is accountable for the emissions proper of the transformation process. It requires that these processes move from a hindsight mode focused on reporting to a forecasting mode based on run-time measurement of GHG emissions. This is a critical first step in companies realizing an economic return for doing the right thing for the environment and their communities.

The South-Central area of the Osa Peninsula, Puntarenas Province, on the Pacific coast of southern Costa Rica, may have produced on the order of 30,000 kg (100,000 troy oz) of gold since prehistoric times. The Peninsula lies along an 800- to 900-km-long belt of late Mesozoic eugeosynclinal rock deposition, hydrothermal activity, and deformation (Campanian). The oldest rocks exposed in the area are basalt and tuffaceous mudstone of the Late Jurassic or Cretaceous Nicoya ophiolite complex. The Nicoya Complex is overlain by weakly lithified Pleistocene Older Sediments, predominantly conglomeratic sandstone and derived from erosion of the Nicoya Complex. Erosion reduced the Complex to a surface of high relief, so that the detrital source was in the area originally; the source retreated with subsidence. Stratigraphically, the Older Sediments are followed by surficial deposits of intermediate age, consolidated Younger Sediments reworked from Older Sediments, and unconsolidated Holocene surficial deposits reworked from Younger Sediments. The most prominent structures are a northeast-trending anticline and northeast and northwest fault sets. Some deformation was Cretaceous, but folding and much faulting occurred after deposition of the Older Sediments. Remnants of plainlike features and destructional terraces on the Older Sediments attest to stepwise downcutting of the terrain during successive stages of uplift. Near the end of this process, the present valley floors and coastal headlands developed. During a probable epeirogenic rise in sea level, Younger Sediments filled the valley bottoms and an aggradational coastal plain developed. Sea level dropped by stages and with some reversals to its present position; this caused stepwise incision of the valley fill, stepwise beveling of the coastal plain, and development of the present wave-cut platform. Spilitization around the time of the Campanian orogeny caused some parts of the Nicoya complex to be calcitized and others to be silicified. Gold, pyrite, and probably additional silica were introduced during subsequent hydrothermal activity. Native gold was eroded from Nicoya Complex lodes and reconcentrated through three generations of placer gold deposits. First, the gold was deposited as a detrital.

Tertiary calc-alkalic to alkalic rocks of the Little Rocky Mountains in north-central Montana host low-grade heap-leachable gold-silver deposits being mined by Pegasus Gold Corporation. Total production from 1884 through 1985 is estimated at 22,625 kilograms (727,414 ounces) of gold. This includes 10,774 kilograms (346,400 ounces) recovered by Pegasus between 1980 to 1986 from 20,318,000 tonnes (22,396,000 tons) of ore grading 0.960 grams of gold per tonne (0.028 ounces per ton). Silver production during this latter period was 24,556 kilograms (789,500 ounces), but reliable silver statistics prior to 1980 are not available. Ore reserves as of January 1, 1986, were estimated to be 35,380,800 tonnes (39,000,000 tons) grading 0.720 grams per tonne (0.021 ounces per ton). Present ore production is 5,533,920 tonnes (6,100,000 tons) per year at a 0.45 to 1 waste to ore strip ratio. Current annual metal production is about 2,644 and 5,288 kilograms of gold and silver respectively (85,000 and 170,000 ounces of gold and silver respectively). The Little Rockies were formed by a calc-alkalic to alkalic magma penetrating through the Precambrian basement into the overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. This intrusive center is Dart of the Central Montana Alkalic Province, a region comprised of twelve separate intrusive centers aligned in a northeast trending belt measuring 200 by 400 kilometers (124 x 248 miles). The ore deposits are structurally controlled epithermal systems which vary from deeper narrow veins to shallow, wide, low-grade stockworks, breccias and intensely fractured "sheeted" zones. The shallow types are now being exploited. Primary mineralization consists principally of gold and silver associated with pyrite, native gold and silver, sylvanite, calaverite, and hessite. Alteration is broadly classified as weak argillic. Pyritization, kaolinization, silicification and feldspathization are the dominant forms of alteration. Fluorite is a common hydrothermal gangue mineral.

Tunnel excavation while mining is not often performed in North America primarily due to access constraints in both operations. Referencing European approaches for long distance tunneling, the Devil?s Slide Tunnel project has applied innovation and technology to provide the ability to overcome this unique challenge. The Devil?s Slide Tunnel requires the construction of twin bore tunnels excavated based on sequential excavation method (SEM) construction methods using New Austrian Tunneling Methods (NATM) principles. The twin tunnels are approximately 9 m (30 ft) in diameter and 1,250 m (4,100 linear ft) in length. The purpose of this project is to reroute Route 1 from around the Devil?s Slide through the San Pedro Mountains crossing from Montara, CA along the south and into Pacifica, CA in the north. The Caltrans project was awarded in December 2006 for a total of $272,366,000. The job is an A+B job, thus the estimate scheme of final lining while tunnel excavation is important to save time. A+B is a method of rewarding a contractor for completing a project as quickly as possible. By providing a cost each working day, the contract combines the cost to perform the work (A) with the cost of impact to the public (B) to provide the lowest cost to the public. Concurrent mining while lining is achieved through a series of gantries and a set of tunnel forms allowing the pass-through of the excavation equipment. The tunnel lining operation passes through several phases of work that are dependent upon the progress of the tunnel excavation process. This involves unique milestones, such as the evolution of the ventilation system, development of an enlarged cross passage to allow equipment to access each tunnel from within the tunnel and, finally, the installation of an invert prior to arch lining that limits the continuity of the final lining operation.

INTRODUCTION The work described here refers to the Genesee River Interceptor Southeast Project. This project is a part of the Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement Program, Phase I, for the Rochester Pure Water District, Rochester, New York. Our contract required the design of a 13,200-feet long main tunnel, 14 feet finished diameter, approximately 100-120 Feet below ground; drop shafts and diversion tunnels to deliver surface flow to the main tunnel; a gate chamber whereby the main tunnel is dropped 35 feet, and provision made for connection to the future tunnel in Phase II, as well as a host of other surface structures. Cross sectional dimensions for the structures involved varied from 16 feet circular to a 20&apos;x50&apos; horseshoe, in a competent rock formation consisting of Lockport Dolomite and Rochester Shale. In the construction of a rock tunnel, the problems of the tunnel designers are as follows: 1. To evaluate stresses in the rock as a result of excavation. 2. Design a temporary support system to prevent any rock failure during the period of construction. Design of this temporary support system is empirical. Design loads given by empirical relations are dependent upon the rock quality and size of opening. Temporary support system may either be steel frames closely spaced along the length of tunnel and tied together, in the case of poor rock, or, an even spacing of rock bolts in the case of competent rock. 3. Design a final lining for the service loads. Service loads, in our case of a water-carrying tunnel, are hydrostatic pressure due to ground water, deadweight of lining) pressure of contained water and time dependent rock loading. The constitutive properties of the rock are extremely complex because of discontinuities, pre-existing stresses due to overburden, material symmetries and changes of initial state associated with the process of excavation. The changes of initial state may be changes of stress fields along with the consequent yield of the material or the extension of existing discontinuities.

"After industrial sand has been mined and processed, the finished product is typically loaded into small bags of 45 kg (100 lb) or less, large bulk bags of 454 to 1,361 kg (1,000 to 3,000 lb), or vehicles such as trucks or trains for transport to end users. As the sand is being transferred and loaded, dust can be released into the work environment, potentially exposing workers to respirable crystalline silica. A number of control technologies have been developed and utilized in an effort to reduce dust liberation during loading operations. For bulk loading into trucks or trains, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated one of these technologies, the Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH), at two industrial sand processing plants. Results from these case studies show that the DSH reduced airborne respirable dust levels by 39 to 88 percent, depending upon the product size being loaded.IntroductionInhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust can lead to the development of silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. Once contracted, there is no cure for silicosis, so the goal is to prevent the development of the disease by limiting exposure to respirable dust containing crystalline silica at or below the exposure limit of 50 µg/ m3 recommended by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, 2002). At industrial silica sand operations, the product contains high levels of crystalline silica, so effective control technologies are needed to minimize the respirable dust exposure of workers.NIOSH, in partnership with the Industrial Minerals Association–North America, published a dust control handbook (NIOSH, 2012) focused upon control technologies for industrial- mineral mining and processing operations. One chapter in this handbook discussed technologies for controlling dust liberated during bulk loading, including telescoping loading spouts, dust collection systems for loading spouts, enclosures for load-out areas and a newer technology known as Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH)."

The zero-points-of-charge of apatite, calcite, and fluorite are pH 6.4, 10.8, and 10.0, respectively. Scheelite is negatively charged above at least pH 3. Flotation responses of these minerals in the presence of potassium oleate and sodium silicate are presented and compared with electrokinetic data. Colloidal silica appears to be the species principally responsible for calcite depression, while silicate anion is the species responsible for fluorite depression. Additions as high as 1 x 10-3 mole/liter silicate have no effect on the flotation responses of apatite and scheelite. Selective flotation of nonmetallic minerals is difficult to achieve with fatty acids or soaps by themselves. As a result, specific reagents are added to aid these separations, and one of the reagents commonly employed for this purpose is sodium silicate. Flotation separations of various calcium¬ bearing minerals such as fluorite from calcite (1,2,3) and scheelite from calcite(24) and apatite(2,5) almost always involve the use of sodium silicate, for example. The mechanisms by which sodium silicate functions as a depressant are still not understood; this fact is probably due to a number of reasons. That is, the dissolution process of sodium silicate is complex, giving rise to a number of ionic and colloidal species. (6) In addition, the type and concentration of these species depend on the ratio of Na20 to Si02, the concentration of sodium silicate, and the pH of the system. (6) At the present time, it is not known which species, colloidal silica or silicate anion, is responsible for depression. If colloidal silica is the species that is adsorbing, then adsorption must occur by electrostatic attraction between the colloid and the mineral surface. Silicate anion, on the other hand, may adsorb either physically or chemically. The objective of this paper is to determine first the active species of sodium silicate and then the conditions under which this species will adsorb and function as a depressant.

The U.S. Geological Survey has for many years been flying and compiling aeromagnetic surveys. The aim is complete coverage of the United States, about half of which is presently done. Colored aeromagnetic maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000 are published as the states are completed; Minnesota and Colorado have been published. Michigan, Iowa, Nevada, Utah, Maryland and Virginia are presently being processed. Some of the most spectacular data collected to date is from the Piedmont of the Eastern United States. I am going to discuss a preliminary aeromagnetic map of the Piedmont region between New York and North Carolina, where coverage is nearly complete. This map has been compiled from many surveys. Flight spacing over Piedmont rocks is 1/4 to 1 mile with flight elevation of 500 feet above ground. The spacing over the Virginia Coastal Plain and Valley and Ridge regions is wider at 2 - 3 miles. Much of the data in Virginia has been produced by the Virginia Division of Mineral Resources. The map is colored on a spectral color scheme with red for the higher intensities and violet the low intensities. Each color represents a 100 gamma interval. Some of the highest intensities are beyond the range of the 13 colors - these are left white. It is necessary, of course, to remove first, the Earth&apos;s main magnetic field. The Geological Survey uses the International Geomagnetic Reference Field or IGRF (Fabiano and Peddie, 1969). The use of color in aeromagnetic maps is not new, but then not common. We have found that colored aeromagnetic contour maps are more useful by far than the uncolored versions because they allow the user to instantly compare intensities in widely separated areas and visualize long wavelength anomalies even when numerous short wavelength anomalies&apos; are superimposed. One tends to see only steep gradients on uncolored aeromagnetic maps, the broad anomalies being quite invisible. We feel that colored maps take the place of various mathematically derived maps such as second derivative or averaged maps.
