It is clear that precise overground and under-ground mapping is an important factor for all designers. Due to rapid changes in underground construction, tunnel designers are increasingly in need of updating project information. This article explains the latest techniques for detecting under-ground utilities as well as underground mapping. Global Positioning System (GPS) is a very ac-curate and popular navigation and mapping system that has been used extensively above ground, but is not used for underground mapping as signals are not strong enough to pass through ground or water. Most underground techniques were developed for military applications during the first and second world wars. Later, the techniques became public. For example, ground penetrating radar was developed for the military in 1970 to be used for locating tunnels under the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. Later, the same technique was used for detecting unexploded ordinance such as plastic land mines.

The prestressed concrete industry in particular, and the precast concrete industry to some extent, are rank newcomers to the concrete construction field compared to the cement, ready-mixed or concrete masonry industries. This young industry reflects its youth and vigor in its enthusiasm, optimism and the belief that it can reach any goal it chooses to set -- and it is setting its sights high. The prestressed and precast concrete industry fully expects to become the major structural and architectural material by the 1980's. Before exploring how the industry expects to reach this goal, a brief look at the origins and the growth of the industry may be useful in an evaluation of the feasibility of this goal. It was always recognized that concrete, strong and efficient for supporting loads which cause compression, was weak and inefficient when used to carry loads which induce tension. Thus the reason for reinforced concrete in which the concrete efficiently carries the compression in a flexural member while low grade steel bars reinforce the concrete in the areas 'of tensile stress. (Fig. 1). The steel being relatively inexpensive, can passively, but quite effectively carry tensile force while the concrete carries compression. The concrete in contact with the reinforcing also protects the steel from corrosion and acts as insulation to provide a superior "built-in" fire resistance. The major disadvantage of reinforced concrete relative to its main competitor, steel, is its weight in relation to its load-carrying capacity. "A phosphate beneficiation plant in Utah is using isotope-based Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) technology to analyze the entire slurry streams of the incoming feed and final product in order to adjust the flotation circuits in near real time and optimize the plant output. The plant has gained greatly improved visibility/control and has reduced product variability for improved profitability and product quality. This paper takes a look at the economics as well as application details and the difference this technology provides in a phosphate application. SIMPLOT PHOSPHATES INTRODUCTION Simplot’s Vernal, Utah Phosphate Mine and Mill are located in the northeast corner of the state in the Uinta Mountains along US Highway 191, eleven miles north of the town of Vernal. The phosphoric acid and fertilizer plant fed by the Vernal mine is located 94 miles Northeast of Simplot Phosphates in Rock Springs, WY.At the Vernal plant, loader and shovel mining to 85 Ton capacity trucks is done at an annual rate of 3.8 Million tons of ore. Run of mine ore is crushed in a mineral sizer to minus 14 inch diameter at the rate 11,500 tons a day and transported to the SAG Mill’s 130,000 ton surge stockpile by overland belt. ORE RESERVES The ore is a Phosphoria Formation of sedimentary rock type dating to the Permian Age. The ore body rests over a 25 mile area on Weber Sandstone from the Pennsylvania and Permian geologic period. Layers of Phosphate Rock can vary in thickness from 0.3 up to 2.1 feet, alternating with layers of Mudstone. The eastern edge of the ore’s body Panel “G” runs 16 feet deep with a feed grade of 21.5% P205 with lower MgO diluents of less than 2.79%."

Proper use of natural resources is multiple use. Underground space resulting from mineral extraction offers opportunities for deep geologic waste disposal (DGWD) which can solve many environmental problems. U.S. government projects plan to use specially mined excavations to dispose of radiotoxic and mixed waste. DGWD takes careful planning, technology transfer, and true partnership between waste generators and mine/repository operators. Using the experience, accumulated by domestic projects in preparation, and by foreign repositories in operation, U.S. mines can claim their rightful share of the growing market for DGWD.

During the design and construction of a coal preparation facility, there are many items that can cause serious problems if not properly handled in the early stages of a project. These problems can be a detriment to smooth owner/ contractor relationships, the designing of a flow sheet, the selection of equipment, the design of the facility, the maintenance of schedule and budget, and a smooth start-up. It is the purpose of this presentation to identify some of these problems and to suggest steps that can be taken to reduce or eliminate their impact.

To assist in fulfilling the Bureau of Mines goals of maintaining adequate mineral supplies to meet national economic and strategic needs, and to minimize the environmental impacts associated with mineral-processing operations, a leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning technique was compared with a leaching-cementation technique for processing low-grade copper ores. Large-scale laboratory column leaching tests (6 to 7 tonnes) were conducted on minus 37-cm chalcocitic ore using ferric sulfate leach solutions at 25° C. Two columns contained 11 percent minus 1.27-cm fines, and two columns contained 32 percent minus 1.27-cm fines. After 416 days of leaching ore samples containing 11 percent minus 1.27-cm fines, copper extraction was 48 and 51 percent for the leach-cementation and leach-solvent extraction-electrowinning procedures, respectively. When leaching ore samples containing 32 percent minus 1.27-cm fines, the leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning technique extracted 60 percent of the copper after 568 days, whereas the leaching-cementation technique extracted only 48 percent of the copper. In the latter test, leach solution ponded on the ore, which reflected a decrease in ore column permeability. The decreased permeability was attributed to the generation of excessive amounts of iron salts during cementation; the salts precipitated on the fine ore particles and in the interstices, thus plugging the column. This decrease also lowered the available oxygen, resulting in poor aerobic bacterial activity which slowed the oxidation rate of ferrous ions to ferric ions. Sulfuric acid required to maintain a leachant pH of 2 was nearly halved when copper was recovered by solvent extraction and electrowinning rather than by cementation.

Since start-up in 1985 the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170 g Au/tonne (5 oz Au/ton) flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processed have been investigated to economically produce dore' at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes recent laboratory and pilot scale test work utilized in the process design and engineering feasibility study of a 73 tonne/day (80 ton/day) pressure oxidation and CIL facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of vertical autoclave units operating at 170°C (338"F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.

Miners work in dangerous terrain, around the clock, with heavy equipment. Is there room for improvement in safety and standardization in the mining industry? Recent history would suggest there is a need for action. At a 2011 Spring Thaw conference in Denver CO, one speaker commented, ?We are having a number of incidents with workers getting ?pulled? into rollers or ?trapped? at transfer points when trying to manually clean (it) while the conveyor is still in motion.? It?s a troubling thought. These actions are specifically prohibited under U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulation 57.14202. Another official from MSHA earlier this year indicated with today?s technology and policies presently in place, ?we should not be repeating the same incidents and violations year after year as we currently do.? But we are doing exactly that.

Mining activity in South America is a growing enterprise. One of difficulties found in many areas of the South American continent, especially in north Chile and south Peru, is the shortage of water supply. In order to overcome this difficulty some mining companies proposed to transport the water from Pacific Ocean up to the mountains. This can be accomplished by the use of stainless steel pipelines, but this is a cost prohibitive solution and is also subject to severe pitting corrosion in a saline environment. The use of mild steel may be a lower cost solution than stainless steel as the material of construction for pipelines but it is subject to corrosion anyway. The corrosion in this case can be internal or external corrosion although cathodic protection as well preventive maintenance usually is enough to mitigate external corrosion without the need to shut down the pipeline. The same is not true about the prevention of internal corrosion. It is not practical, sometimes not even possible, shutdown a pipeline to carry out an inspection and fix sections where potential failures are detected. It is possible avoid corrosion caused by sea water within the mild steel pipelines by applying a proper chemical program designed to virtually eliminate dissolved oxygen in the water commonly called deaeration.1 This type of treatment obviously involves additional capital investment since it requires the construction of one deaerator with the first pumping station and additional equipment at each point where the water can come into contact with oxygen. Deaerators will increase operational costs and subsequent injection of chemicals will be required in the case of multiple degasification facilities thus increasing the consumption of chemicals. grams based on oxygen scavengers, the objective of the present study is to develop a new water treatment capable of preventing mild steel corrosion in aerated sea water. Laboratory investigations on the possibility of using magnetic separation for the recovery of sulfide minerals have been reported. A survey of several sulfide ores and flotation concentrates indicated that, in most cases, magnetic separation is not a suitable primary beneficiation method. However, encouraging results have been obtained in concentrate purification. At the Boliden complex sulfide ore concentrator in Garpenberg, Sweden, an Allis-SALA Mark III carousel High Gradient Magnetic Separator (HGMS) is used with a small flotation circuit to recover sphalerite lost to the galena concentrate during lead flotation. After four years of refining the HGMS process, there has been an increase in zinc recovery and an enhancement in the quality of the lead concentrate.

The potential inadequacy of natural gas reserves to supply projected requirements in the 1980's has been pointed out.(1,2) As a result, interest has arisen in the development of new, potentially low-cost processes for the conversion of coal into high BTU gas. In June, 1964, the office of Coal Research (U. S. Department of interior) and Consolidation Coal Company (now a subsidiary of Continental Oil Company) entered into a contract to continue work on coal gasification utilizing the Consol CO2 Acceptor Process. Work under this contract has been specifically directed toward the use of lignite as the carbonaceous feed, although the process is also applicable to non-caking subbituminous coals. The primary objective of this work was to establish the technical feasibility in continuous bench-scale equipment, of the novel features of the C02 Acceptor Process. Secondary objectives were the testing of commercially obtainable acceptors and the design and economic evaluation of a commercial facility. The bench-scale process development has been completed successfully and the construction of a large pilot plant at Rapid City, South Dakota, has been authorized. It is the purpose of this paper to review the technology of this new gasification process and to present the current projected economics of a plant producing 250 MM SCFD of pipeline quality gas.

The selection of a slope angle for an open pit in rock has often been made without the benefit of a comprehensive engineering study. This is largely due to the fact that the hardware and procedures necessary for such a study have not been available. Recently this situation has been reversed. The application of borehole television and terrestrial photogrammetric devices has made possible the accurate determination of rock joint structure, on which stability calculations can be based. Another important aspect is the evolution of practical methods of conducting in-situ rock joint strength tests.

A major design problem for upper seam longwall gate roads that are to be constructed in a multi-seam environment is to predict the effects of stress field changes created by interaction. To quantify these effects, case study data were analyzed to develop empirical stress transfer relationships between seams for both longwall and room and pillar mining. Data analysis showed vertical movement and roof characterization in the upper seam to be controlling factors in damage prediction and, therefore, gate road planning and design. CMRR (Coal Mine Roof Rating) was correlated with the multi-seam roof characterization systems previously used. A WINDOWS-based software package named UGLY (Upperseam Gateroad Longwall Stability) was developed. Results from selected case studies were correlated with upper seam stress predictions.

"In March 2013, the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County began final design of the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP) Effluent Outfall Tunnel project. The new, approximately 7-mile, 18-ft internal diameter tunnel will provide additional capacity and redundancy for the existing 8- and 12-foot diameter tunnels, which were built in 1937 and 1958, respectively. Connections to an existing, active 14-foot arch force main and four existing ocean outfalls ranging from 5- to 10-foot diameter are required. This paper will present geological features for the project, and details of the proposed post-tensioned tunnel liner and associated structures. INTRODUCTION The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (Sanitation Districts) are 23 independent special districts serving approximately 5.3 million residents in Los Angeles County. Seventeen of the districts that furnish sewerage services to the metropolitan Los Angeles area are signatory to a Joint Outfall Agreement that provides for a regional, interconnected system of facilities known as the Joint Outfall System (JOS). The JOS service area is shown in Figure 1. The JOS serves an area that encompasses 73 cities as well as unincorporated territory and parts of the City of Los Angeles. The JOS provides wastewater collection, treatment, reuse, and disposal for residential, commercial, and industrial users, and it includes seven treatment plants, the largest of which is the JWPCP, located in the City of Carson. Currently, secondary treated effluent is conveyed through two 6-mile long parallel tunnels, 8- and 12-feet in diameter, from the JWPCP to a manifold structure located at Royal Palms Beach, near White Point on the Palos Verdes (PV) Peninsula, from which four seafloor outfalls extend offshore. The two main outfalls, 90- and 120-inches in diameter, extend approximately 1.5 miles offshore and discharge at a depth of approximately 200 feet below sea level. The other two outfalls, 60- and 72-inches in diameter, are used for additional capacity during heavy rain events and extend a shorter distance offshore and discharge at shallower depths. A schematic of the existing system with the proposed tunnel and structures is shown in Figure 2, and the proposed 18-ft diameter tunnel alignment is shown in Figure 3. Both existing tunnels and main outfalls are required to be in service at all times."

Consider a deep gold orebody with grade of 4 g/t (0.11 oz/st). At the time of this writing, with gold prices at historic highs, it could be a good, but not great, prospect. But if it is a vein deposit, and those veins are 200 g/t (5.8 oz/st), it would be significantly more attractive if there was a way to produce directly from those veins, leaving the rest of the rock in place. It has been a viable commercial technology for more than five decades.

"This paper describes the optic fiber structural monitoring system implemented for Pavoncelli Bis tunnel. The paper highlights the optic fiber sensors customization capabilities, how they smoothly fit precast concrete lining processes and TBM operations, and how a lifelong service monitoring can be achieved. An overview of readings’ evolution during excavation concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONPavoncelli Bis is a 10 km hydraulic tunnel designed to by-pass the existing Pavoncelli tunnel which experienced severe damages during the 1980 Irpino-Lucano earthquake, in south of Italy (Barla 2009). Pavoncelli Bis excavation work commenced in 1988-90, however, when excavation approached pk. 0+583 in 1992, water percolations became more and more consistent and resulted in work suspension. The tunnel was eventually sealed at pk. 0+383, leaving a flooded section between pk. 0.383 and pk. 0+583. Work resumed in 2012 where EPB-TBM excavation was adopted to cross the flooded section and to overcome complex hydro-geological conditions in various lito-types and, in particular, in the Varicolori Clay-shales area (Figure 1).Consequently, stress evolution monitoring is extremely important during construction and during the service life of tunnel lining in clay-shales and in faults areas. In particular, the paper focuses on the monitoring system proposed for the newly EPB-TBM excavated portion from pk 0+583 onwards where optic fiber sensing technology was chosen for its reading stability and reliability in presence of water and its ability to be connected in series and remotely interrogated at kilometers of distance. FBGS OPTICAL FIBER SENSOR TECHNOLOGYFiber Bragg Grating Sensors (FBGS) are gaining increasing attention in the field of experimental stress analysis. Basically, Fiber Optic Bragg Sensors are strain-measuring devices and therefore provide many of the advantages of the well-known metal foil strain gages (Kreuzer 2007).Bragg gratings are written into so called single-mode fibers. These fibers consist of a very small inner core of 4 to 9 µm diameter and an outer part (cladding) of pure glass (SiO2) of 125 µm diameter. The difference of refraction indexes between inner core and cladding causes the light to propagate only inside the small core."

"The cPlant is a modular flotation plant which has been designed to minimize capital expenditure and risk. The plant is based on a number of standard modules, for both flotation and ancillary equipment, which can be configured to give the required flowsheet for the ore being treated. All of these modules can be rapidly deployed and erected onsite, minimizing not only engineering time and site preparation but reducing the time taken to get the plant up and generating revenue. Given the paradigm shift in flotation circuit design that has been employed in the cPlant it may allow smaller, previously uneconomic deposits to be exploited and create a more cost efficient upgrade route for existing plants. This paper introduces the cPlant and presents a case study comparing EPC cost and development timing of a cPlant against a traditional flotation circuit design. INTRODUCTION In the development of any mining project the cost associated with process plant engineering, equipment procurement and installation can affect the financial viability of a project. This is of special significance for smaller scale mining projects which perhaps don’t have the mine-life or revenue generation to justify the payback on a modern processing facility. Listening to customer feedback and understanding the challenges that small to mid-sized projects can face lead Outotec to the development of the cPlant. Modularization of mineral processing plants isn’t a new idea with a number of examples being reported in literature for gravity gold (Cabot, Trudel and Cabot, 2001; Gray et al., 2006), dense medium separation (September and Abate, 2006) and even hydrometallurgy (Saario et al., 2013). All these plants have been developed to try to improve on the traditional economics associated with fixed processing plants. Using standardized modules to construct a plant reduces engineering time and design costs which can both be beneficial to the outcome of a project. In addition the modular nature of the plant lends itself to transport to remote sites and rapid installation with only minimal site preparation required. A plant of modular design also has several other advantages over its conventional cousins. Firstly it is relatively easy to expand by duplicating existing modules. Secondly the modules can be treated as building blocks for the process and rearranged if a change in conditions requires flowsheet adjustment. Thirdly, there is potential to disassemble and remove the modular units at the end of the mine life. The ability to easily disassemble, re-pack and transport the plant to a new location not only is important to the long term environmental footprint of an operation but can also be seen as a bonus to an operator that has a number of small ore deposits. If applied in this way modular plants have the potential to create a whole new operating model for previously unviable ore deposits."

Refdist is a simple but valid approach to planning or analyzing a test-vs-control plant trial that uses accumulated plant performance data to calculate objective criteria for judging the trial outcome. Refdist calculations and results are explained and illustrated with data typical of the mining industry. Findings from a simulation study of Refdist statistical properties are reported. Suggestions for dealing with messy data situations are offered.

"The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) is a nonprofit organization that represents all aspects of the tunneling and underground space industry worldwide. Next year, the ITA will be holding its annual World Tunnel Congress (WTC) in San Francisco, CA, April 22-28, 2016. The ITA’s mission is to be the leading international organization advancing the entire industry and promoting the use of tunnels and underground space through knowledge-sharing and application of technology. This article updates a series of articles about the ITA prepared in 2007 by Harvey Parker, former president of the ITA, in anticipation of the next WTC in San Francisco.ITA accomplishes its goals through a range of activities that includes organizing conferences, workshops and meetings, working group and committee studies, training, experiments and other activities. ITA is also involved in the publication of proceedings, reports, and guideline documents as well as facilitating interaction among its membership and with sister organizations and decision makers. ITA currently includes 73 member nations and several hundred affiliate members, including 15 prime sponsors and 63 supporters. ITA’s membership is comprised of member nations as well as sponsors and affiliate members.The United States has had a prominent role in ITA since its 1974 inception, when it was formed as a result of a worldwide survey conducted in the early 1970s by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Bill Lucke, from the U.S., who was in charge of tunnels for the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration, was a member of the organizing committee that created ITA and became a vice president of ITA.
