Organic matter commonly associated with Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) lead-zinc deposits may be used to assess the burial/thermal history of host rocks and sulfides. Organic matter may also have been involved in the genesis of H2S required to precipitate sulfide ores. Pine Point, Northwest Territories, Canada, provides an example. Located on the south shore of Great Slave Lake, Pine Point is an operating world class deposit which has produced 58 million tons of ore containing 3.0 percent Pb and 6.1 percent Zn from more than 40 Individual orebodies. Well-documented paleokarst features in a Middle Devonian carbonate complex are the main ore hosts. Sphalerite and galena ores are mainly open space fillings, and, from fluid inclusion studies, were deposited from saline fluids at temperatures of up to at least 100°C. Forms of organic matter occurring in the Pine Point barrier-reef complex Include indigenous organic matter, heavy oil and bitumen. Based on numerous geochemical criteria, it is clear that heavy oils and bitumens were derived locally from indigenous organic matter. The geochemical character of the Indigenous organic matter demonstrates that the barrier-reef complex is immature to marginally mature with respect to petroleum generation, and has not been heated above about 60°C maximum. Thus sphalerite with fluid inclusions that yield temperatures up to about 100°C represents former thermal anomalies. Bitumen is of two main forms at Pine Point: widespread soft, tarry material soluble in organic solvents (unaltered bitumen); and hard, brittle, glassy material that is mostly solvent-insoluble, and associated with white sparry dolomite and lead-zinc ores (altered bitumen). There are also partly altered bitumens. Unaltered bitumens have atomic H/C ratios of about 1.4, sulfur contents averaging 7.8 percent, and sulfur isotope ratios 634S) of approximately +4.6 per mil. Altered bitumens have atomic H/C ratios averaging 1.02, sulfur contents averaging 22 percent, and 634S values of about +12.9 per mil. These data and the organic geochemical character of a large suite of bitumen samples analyzed, strongly support the concept that some bitumen has been involved in the thermochemical reduction of sulfate to produce the H2S required to precipitate the ores. Mass-balance calculations indicate that the amount and degree of alteration of bitumen is more than enough to account for the reduced sulfur species deposited as metallic sulfides at Pine Point. MVT deposits, including Pine Point, seem to require the coincidence of available metallic Ions, pre-existing pore space, and a precipitating agent. A close look at organic matter in more MVT settings may outline trends in distribution or alteration which can be used as indicators of past thermal environments and processes of ore deposition.

"INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The world needs visionary people to break new ground and bring development forward. The human race has an inherent power and lust to explore and push borders, but also to connect and bring people together. Transport of people and goods has through history been a key factor to develop societies and increase collaboration between people and regions. Today, in the era of globalization, efficient transport systems are still vital for further development. Often, ideas of bold projects, like long bridges or tunnels, have been raised long before those projects are realized and actually built. This shows that visions must gradually be transformed into feasible business cases and sustainable political solutions. In some cases also technological development is necessary to make visions come true. Isambard Kingdom Brunel, indeed a visionary engineer, completed the oldest underwater tunnel in the world when the Thames Tunnel in London was opened in 1843. This tunnel is still in operation and now part of London’s rail transport system. Another milestone for the tunnelling industry was passed when the 54 km long Seikan tunnel in Japan was opened in 1988 after more than 15 years of construction. This tunnel is presently the world’s longest railway tunnel. Together with the 50.5 km long Channel tunnel between the UK and France, which has the longest undersea portion 37.9 km, they constitute examples of pioneering engineering projects that bring the industry forward. In 2016, the Gotthard Base Tunnel will be opened and then becomes the longest railway tunnel in the world with its 57.1 km. The trend is obvious that tunnels throughout the world are getting longer and longer. The Brenner Basis Tunnel presently under construction will yet again break the record being 64 km long. Presently, a number of even longer tunnels are planned and under design, some of these also have very long subsea portions, e.g. Bohai Straight Tunnel (123 km), Irish Sea Tunnel (around 100 km) and the Helsinki – Tallin fixed link (approximately 90 km). Northern Europe sees an increasing demand on efficient transport corridors to meet the growth of freight transportation between the Scandinavian Peninsula and central-Eastern Europe. Sustainable solutions will be required, and a shift from road/maritime transports to rail is imperative. Consequently, this paper describes yet another visionary project, a fixed railway link between Sweden and Germany, the Shortcut, to enhance traffic between these regions and to make it greener. It is true that this project still requires some work from politicians, economists and engineers to be realized, however, building a 100 km long tunnel under the Baltic Sea may become reality sooner than we think."

In June 1997, Mount Polley Mining Corp., a division of Imperial Metals Corp., completed an 18-kt/d (20,000 stpd) gold-copper mine in central British Columbia. Fast-track construction and extensive off-site construction were combined with an aggressive project schedule to build the mine in one year. This was three months ahead of schedule and 7% below the original budgeted cost of C$123.5 million (US$86 million). The Mount Polley Mine was the first of a crop of new open-pit mines in British Columbia. The Mount Polley deposit has been explored since the mid-1960s when it was known as the Cariboo Bell property. From 1988, Imperial Metals completed drilling and metallurgical testing on the deposit. This led to a positive feasibility study and the issuing of a Mine Development Certificate in 1991. The project was later shelved due to falling metals prices and the strength of the Canadian dollar. In late 1994, Imperial merged with Bethlehem Resources Corp., bringing a strong project team to the company. The deposit was then re-evaluated, ore reserves revised and additional metallurgical testing was performed. The result was a revised project plan. It indi¬cated that a financially feasible gold-copper mining op¬eration could be constructed at Mount Polley operat¬ing at 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd). In May 1996, an agreement was reached with Sumitomo to jointly fund and develop the project. By early 1996, final plans and permits were being prepared for construction, scheduled to begin in June 1.996. On-site work commenced on May 28th, 1996 following lifting of the road restrictions. Mount Polley Mining acted as its own project manager. Construction was completed in June 1997. Plant runup took place in July and full production began in August. Through the use of off-site construction and the careful selection of contractors who cooperated to complete some 12 major contracts, it was possible to reduce the mine and mill construction time from 16 to 13 months. Off-site construction for all possible aspects of the work and the use of used milling equipment allowed significant savings in overall capital costs of construction. Total costs for the mine, mill and tailings dam equated to C$6,100/t/d of throughput. The mill design incorporates several innovative features that will aid maintenance and allow flexibility of operation. The operation is designed as a closed system and meets the latest environmental standards. Concentrate is shipped by truck to the port of Vancouver. Revenues for the mine come from the mine's production of about 3.1 t/a (100,000 oz/year) of gold and 10.8 kt/a (24 million lbs/year) of copper during the first four years of the 12-year mine life.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Climax mine is located 161 km (100 miles) southwest of Denver on Fremont Pass astride the Con¬tinental Divide. Climax employs 2800 people to pro¬duce 42 670 t/d (47,000 stpd) of molybdenum ore. The Storke level, the main underground level, produces 19 970 t/d (22,000 stpd); the 600 level, the lowest ac¬tive underground area, produces 7260 t/d (8000 stpd); and the open pit presently produces 15 430 t/d (17,000 stpd), Fig. 1. A panel caving method is possible because of the favorable geology and geometry of the Climax ore body. Geology The Climax deposit is composed of three separate ore bodies formed in a massive Tertiary stockwork which penetrates Precambrian granites and schists. The ore bodies are elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 914 x 1219 m (3000 x 4000 ft). In section the ore bodies are arcuate with an overall height of 457 m (1500 ft), although the depth is not firmly ascertained. Ore grade decreases rapidly into a highly siliceous cen¬tral core and more gradually toward the outer bounda¬ries of the deposit. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore zone and contains few dilution-causing waste inclusions. Molybdenite is contained in pre-ore fractures which were largely recemented during the three mineralization pulses. Postore fractures, with a spacing of a few inches to several meters (feet), render the deposit amenable to caving when it is undercut. The peripheral rock caves similarly to the ore, but the central core is competent and is difficult to cave. Caving Feasibility Successful caving action requires an undercut area of approximately 122 by 122 m (400 by 400 ft). When the undercut area exceeds this minimum distance, the arching effect is lost, and the ore column collapses. Ore extensions from the main cave area less than 122 m (400 ft) wide usually cannot be caved. Waste or low¬grade areas within the deposit can be left if they are large enough to carry weight around openings passing through them. Experience indicates that these areas should be over 30 m (100 ft) in length and width. Smaller unprofitable units of waste, such as postore dikes, are mined to avoid weight problems and result in ore dilution. Successful caving and ore recovery are dependent upon timely ore removal from the undercut zone because columns of immobile ore inhibit caving and concentrate weight onto the underlying workings. Climax experience indicates that a finger (drawpoint) spacing* averaging 10.4 m (34 ft) yields an excellent caving action and a 92.5% ore recovery at the estimated grade. The need/wish to sequestrate CO2is based on the assumption of the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), that CO2 maybe the major driver in climatic changes, i.e. especially the anthropogenic CO2emissions due to the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas will increase the atmospheric CO2-content, which will lead to higher temperatures in the atmosphere. The 0.03% CO2in the atmosphere have a 22% share of the natural greenhouse gas effect of 33 K necessary for life on earth. The main share of 62% has the water vapour in the atmosphere. Only if one concentrates on the greenhouse gas effect of the gases beside water vapour, CO2 becomes most important with 58% influence. In addition there are other influences on the climate like: • Eccentricity of earth’s orbit, precession of orbital plane, obliquity and precession of earth’s rotation axis (Milankovitch’s theory) • Sunspots and magnetic field of the sun • Changing streams in the ocean • Volcanic activities • Distribution of continents on the surface of the earth • Impact of meteorites • Change of insulation by interplanetary dust [Muller, R.A. 2000] etc. To answer the question, if the CO2-content in the atmosphere has an important or exclusive influence on the earth atmospheric mean surface temperature, one should look into history. Figure 1shows the mean temperature of the atmosphere and the atmospheric CO2-content time histories 1 billion years back; no correlation can be found between them. Nevertheless a lot of countries have committed themselves to reduce their CO2-emissions.

[The two types of sulfide deposits in the Bathhurst Newcastle area are; (a) epignetic fissure deposits, and (b) massive sulfide deposits. Geological evidence has been variously interpreted to suggest a syngenetic origin, a source bed' origin, or a magmatic hydrothermal origin for the massive sulfide deposits. Sulfides disseminated through the black shales and argillites of the host rocks are enriched in S32 (mean value 22.34, S34. = 5.8 per mil) relative to the meteoritic standard of 22.21, and have a broad spread in range of values. S32/S34 ratios of sulfide minerals from the deposits occur in two distinct groups. The massive sulfide deposits exhibit ratios between 21.88 to 22.05, while the fissure deposits exhibit ratios between 22.18 and 22.21. These results suggest two separate sources for the sulfur, each, however, resulting in magmatic hydrthermal deposition because of the narrow spread of ratios in each group. Granite intrusive into the host rocks of the sulfide deposits have a mean K/A age of 386 ± 10 M.Y. Lead minerals in the sulfide deposits have a mean nodel lead age of 370±20 M. Y. Thus the lead minerals and the granite bodies were emplaced during the same major orogenic event. Sulfide minerals from magmatic hydrothermal deposit have a very narrow range of S32/S34 values, as do those of the Bathurst area. It seems reasonable, therefore, that well homogenized magmatic hydrothermal solutions are the most logical source of the sulfide deposits. Furthermore, the homogeneity of the lead isotopic abundance data gives strong independent evidence that the ores are of a magmatic hydrothermal origin.]

A prototype expert system for planning and designing underground coal mines has been developed in a doctoral study (Basu, 1991) at the University of Kentucky (U.K.). The objective of the study was to provide a design tool for configuring layout parameters, production systems, and for determining economic feasibility. Details of knowledge engineering and the prototype knowledge-based system for integrated and intelligent planning and design have been covered in the dissertation. The prototype demonstrates its robustness by allowing interaction among major design components, most notably among ventilation, ground control, and production planning. A plan for testing and evaluating the prototype, an important phase of software development, is presented here. Existing evaluation procedures for expert system prototypes are discussed and the evaluations for the underground coal mine design expert system prototype are included. The initial testing plan used senior-level mining engineering students to test the acceptance of the prototype. This test suggested the usefulness of such a system for training and instruction. This initial acceptance test was performed with the feasibility prototype. The other test objective, i.e., testing the model's accuracy, involved extensive participation of domain experts. For overall accuracy evaluation, an existing underground coal mine design was compared with the output from a design session using the expert system prototype. The testing procedure is not an isolated, independent development phase. Much of the accuracy evaluation is done at the time of knowledge base development. Therefore, the knowledgebase itself does not need a formal test phase. The major purpose of the field testing is to determine probable user acceptance. The acceptance test determines the completeness of the prototype and also will determine efficiency of user interfaces.

ABOUT BENTONITE TUNNELLING Much has been written and many learned papers given on this subject whose generic term is Slurry Tunnelling. This paper is about the particular form of slurry tunnelling known as the Bentonite Tunnelling System. This method. of tunnelling was invented by J.V. Bartlett of consulting engineers, Mott Hay and Anderson in 1964. The general principles are incorporated in British Patent No. 1083322. It was not until the early 1970's that serious experimental work was started to prove the technical feasibility of the process. In the U.K. in 1971 Edmund Nuttall Limited started on an experimental length of 3.8m diameter tunnel at New Cross in London. In Germany at about the same time Wayss and Freytag were starting on a 3.7m diameter collector sewer tunnel in Hamburg. In Japan early slurry tunnelling work was carried out in the 1960's. In the early 1970's a large number of slurry tunnels of various diameters were carried out in that country. This paper is being presented at a time when this system of tunnelling has become an accepted method throughout the developed world. As a result of the work carried out so far there is now a large amount of data existing regarding the effects on the ground in the immediate area of the tunnel, settlement at the surface and the ability of the system to cope with ground varying from clays to coarse gravels and containing large erratics such as granite boulders. "Caterpillar has developed the Cat GH800B longwall plow system, designed for mining very low coal seams at high rates. Building on the attributes of the proven GH1600 plow system, the Caterpillar longwall team in Lünen, Germany, worked with the German Ibbenbüren Mine to design and construct a system for mining an anthracite seam averaging only 0.85 m (33.5 in.) thick. The result is the GH800B plow and associated longwall system, which is now operating in the Ibbenbüren Mine - where the seam does not exceed 1 m (39 in.) in height.The Cat GH800 plow, with an installed power of 2 x 400 kW, has been the plow of choice for seam heights from 0.9 to 2 m (35 to 78 in.), regardless of seam inclination or coal hardness. But the lower the coal seam, the more difficult the extraction process. Flexibility, reliability, efficiency and serviceability of the whole system had to be refined for maximum productivity in such a minimal height, but several key modifications led to success.The armored face conveyor (AFC) modifications for the GH800B plow system include PF4 plow line pans with a replaceable top trough and a new plow guide made of a one-piece casting to provide extra strength and durability while being lower in height than the previous welded version. External dogbone connectors between the line pans and a strong and flexible relay bar between the AFC and the roof supports (shields) further adapt the conveyor for very low seam operation. To increase coal throughput, the engineering team widened the conveyor crosssection with extended side plates."

Trona, Na3(CO3)(HCO3) ? 2H20, is mined in quantity from saline facies of the Eocene Green River Formation of southwestern Wyoming. The Green River deposits are the world's largest known resource of natural sodium carbonates. An estimated 127 billion tons of trona ore are known to occur in beds exceeding 4 ft in thickness (Wiig and others, 1995). Twenty-five trona beds, exceeding 3 ft in thickness, and covering at least 100 mil have been identified. The beds are numbered sequentially in ascending stratigraphic order. Trona beds underlie more than 850 mil (bed 17) and are up to 37 ft thick (bed 1) (Culbertson, 1966). Five underground mines, operating in beds 17, 19, 20, 24, and 25, process trona to produce soda ash (sodium carbonate). A total of 11,837,703 short tons of soda ash were produced from 17.1 million tons of trona ore in 1997 (Kostick and Clark, 1998). A detailed study of trona bed 17, using techniques of petrography and X-ray diffraction, has been undertaken in the Solvay trona mine, near Green River, Wyoming. A continuous, vertical-channel sample was taken from near the production shaft for this study. At this location, bed 17 is 12.6 ft thick and includes several stratigraphic markers that are easily correlated throughout the mine and in surrounding drill cores. Bed 17 in this area averages 90% trona through its entire thickness (Wiig and others, 1995) and 95-100% trona in the lower two-thirds of the bed. Mineral impurities include water-insoluble dolomite, quartz, pyrite, clays, and other minerals and partially water-soluble northupite and shortite. Northupite, Na3Mg(CO3)2C1, contributes to chloride contamination in the soda-ash product and is concentrated in the upper one-third of bed 17, which is left behind as roof rock. Northupite has two modes of occurrence: (1) as bedded strata with dolomite, chert, clay, and shortite and (2) between primary trona crystals in trona spar. Petrographic and mineralogic data indicate that this section of bed 17 was deposited subaqueously during its early and late history and may have undergone periods of deposition in a subaerial or marshy environment. Stratigraphic data indicate that trona accumulated at an annual rate of 2-4 in. per year. During trona deposition, dolomite, CaMg(C03)2, precipitated in parting layers when new water entered the lake, freshening supplies of calcium and magnesium. The lack of clay minerals in the trona facies suggests water input may be by means of springs, as opposed to overland flow. Clay occurrences in thicker dolomitic partings within the trona facies indicate periods of episodic overland flow, possibly resulting from storms in the surrounding basin.

Open-pit mines in the US and throughout the world are typically characterized by increasing operating costs and decreasing ore grades. Thus, companies must continue to improve their use of human and technological resources to remain competitive in the marketplace. Duval Corp. has historically been very sensitive to mining costs, in part because of relatively low grade copper-molybdenum ore bodies. These concerns have resulted in three haulage system generations at the 218 kt/d (240,000 stpd) Sierrita-Esperanza open-pit mine south of Tucson, AZ. Each generation has exceeded the performance of the one replaced. The latest system of portable crushers and conveyors reduces hauling costs by combining both hardware and technique. Savings are achieved not only bysubstituting conveyors for haul trucks, but also by permitting the crusher-convey or system to closely follow mining as the pit deepens and/or mining areas change location. The Duval system is capable of easy and inexpensive relocation in varying site configurations in relatively short time periods. Its implementation in active mining areas results in minimum disruption to both the mine operation and mine design. This haulage concept allows the mining engineer maximum freedom to design an open pit for profit rather than for equipment. Maximum savings with a portable system are achieved by minimizing truck haulage costs. At Sierrita, for example, the yearly estimated operating cost savings for each thousand feet of +10% truck ramp replaced by conveyors is about $1 million per portable crusher. A savings of $30 million could be achieved fora three-portable system overa 10 year period simply by reducing the average truck Iiftto the crusher by 30 m (100 ft), There is also the added capital expense of buying trucks to cover the additional 30 m (100 ft) of lift. Relocation costs are an important consideration in a portable system. Direct costs can become a significant operating expense if frequent relocations are necessary to take full advantage of potential haulage cost savings. A site preparation cost of $375,000, for example, would add an additional operating cost of 2.8¢/t(2.5¢/st) for a system handling 13.6 Mt/a (15 million stpy), assuming one move a year, In addition to the direct cost of site preparation, such as installation of retaining walls, apron feeder slots, and equipment pads, there is the cost of site renovation after abandonment. Indirect relocation costs, while less tangible and more dependent on specific mine design and scheduling, can be of significance. A slowdown in the mining rate or a less efficient mining plan can result from a site not being immediately available for mining after abandonment. Conversely, mining in narrow areas can be adversely affected if two or three month lead times are required for site preparation.

"The adoption of tunneled combined sewerage interceptors and outfalls leads to design linings which are often subject to internal pressures that are larger than the external pressures, resulting in significant tension loads. The need to meet stringent durability conditions for the normal design life of 100 years often drives client specifications to require a double pass solution with a cast in situ secondary concrete lining. However, improvements in concrete technology and the need to seek efficiency in terms of time and costs, have driven designers to consider single pass segmental linings. The Riachuelo Sanitation project in Buenos Aires is subject to these constraints both upstream and downstream of a sewage treatment plant. This paper describes how the challenges of up to 2 bar pressure differential have been addressed by careful analysis of soil structure interaction to ensure that the full benefit of external ground pressure is realized, resulting in a more optimal design for the constructor both in terms of cost and time. INTRODUCTION The construction of long sewerage interceptors and outfalls is becoming an increasingly common piece of infrastructure for modern urban cities facing a large water front and estuarine conditions, which are under a significant environmental burden imposed by decades of sustained growth. Such works intercept most of the distributed sewage discharges to then divert them to a central treatment point from which it will be finally diffused via an outfall into a water body capable to accept these discharges under acceptable environmental conditions. Depending on the magnitude of the sewage load to be handled, the configuration of the urban environment and the conditions of the receiving water body, both in terms of oceanography forces and seabed conditions, these schemes will vary in length, conveyance capacity and design and construction requirements. When conditions permit, the current trend is the execution of long outfalls using flexible solutions (such as the use of HDPE pipes) which usually require some form of concrete ballasted weights to resist off shore dynamic forces when directly laid over the sea bed. However, this concept faces limitations when the conveyance requirements indicate the need for large diameters (typically above 3000 m) and also when the outfall needs to avoid deep features off shore such as navigation channels. When this occurs, tunneling, particularly segmentally lined tunnel constructed by TBM emerges as the most feasible approach for large diameter, long deep outfalls. The operating conditions often result in internal pressures that are larger than the external pressures, resulting in significant tension loads in the lining. The need to meet stringent durability conditions for the normal design life of 100 years often drives client specifications to require a double pass solution with a cast in situ secondary concrete lining."

INTRODUCTION Under certain circumstances the closure of former mines which are located above a certain flood level can result in problems such as the emanation of detrimental substances after having completed filling and reclamation operations. This especially applies to uranium mines in which the radiation dose could far exceed the dose of natural background radiation. By means of an example of the uranium mining in Germany in the following it will be demonstrated how to cope with this problem. On the basis of comparative investigations in various vein deposits and using ventilation scheme calculations proposals for the optimization of the necessary forced ventilation can be submitted. REPORT ON SITUATION In the period 1946 - 1989 the former Soviet-German joint- stock company "Wismut" developed into the biggest European uranium producer with a total output of about 220.000 t of uranium. A major mineraldeposit district was the deposit of Schlemaf Alberoda in the Saxon Ore Mountains, in which 80.000 t of uranium were produced. Thus it is among the biggest uranium de- posits of the world, from which various other metals were at- tracted for many centuries. The exploitation of the Schlemal Alberoda deposit involved steep veins in regions near the surface as well as depths of 1.800 m. Until 1991 a total excavation space of 40 million m3, which is flooded at present, was produced. With the average increase in the water level of 80 cm per week the final flood level is expected to be reached in the year 2003. The shaft 373 at present still being used for ventilation will be no longer available since the second quarter of 1998 after flooding the -540 m level because it is not connected with the excavation system near the surface. As a study shows, a radiation dose far above the natural back- ground radiation has to be expected for the town of Schlema due to the extensive mining activities near the surface and due to the subsequent displacement with missing depression fo the main mine ventilating fan. An uncontrolled air flow containing radon leaves the open mine excavation due to the effect of the natural ventilating pressure and emanation caused by the barometric pressure drop with atmospheric pressure fluctuations. This mine air with its high-level radioactive equilibrium results in a high radiation dose in buildings (see Figure l). After having switched off the main ventilating fan in order to investigate the effect of the missing depression the increase in radon concentrations amounted up to 700% in various buildings of Schlema. This was partially due to the inversion state of the weather at that time. The high radon concentration has detrimental effects on the health of the population and of the miners working on the further reclamation in regions above the flood level. ANALYSIS OF THE RADON EMANATION RATE EXPECTED Considering the composition of the radon inflow from the mine workings it becomes evident that 80 % of the radon inflow originates from abandoned excavations and only 20 %from open ventilated mine excavations. This fact has to be taken into account for the ventilation after having reached the final state of flooding. After completing ventilation the radiation dose on the surface is mainly due to the radon emanation from excavations close to the surface. Investigations of the Wismut GmbH showed the in- crease in the specific radon emanation rate by a factor of 100 for abandoned excavations as compared to new drivings. One reason is the larger specific surface of abandoned galleries caused by displacements due to mining activities as well as by fall of hanging. Furthermore the radon can enter the gallery through joints, which have subsequently opened by convergences. All these effects result in a larger free surface available for radon diffusion. The large number of drivings in the deposit sections near the surface and the fact that the highest uranium contents are found near the surface as well as the high fracturing are further reasons for higher emanation rates. Considering these facts it can be expected that the radon inflow of 10.000 kBq/s, which refers to an open mine excavation of about 1.4 million m3, represents a minimum. Only by increasing the specific surface, for which a numerical value has still to be determined, this value will increase with certainty. An extensive radon emanation from the residual excavation, which cannot be flooded, can only be prevented by maintaining the ventilation system. The low pressure produced by the fan in the mine openings prevents the emanation of air containing radon due to the effect of the natural ventilating pressure. Without the controlled withdrawal of the radon the population as well as the miners working on the further reclamation in areas above the flood level would be endangered. Therefore the follow-

This is the sixth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data plus more than 100 new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. An article in the December 1984 Kentucky Coal Journal could have far reaching applications. It explains that a banking firm examined the "reserve risk" as one of six factors for analysis when financing a coal project. The firm concluded that coal reserves in Kentucky are worth an average of $0.29/t ($0.26 per st) in-place. The banking firm based this in-place value on its examination of more than 50 leases. In-place value is especially important when trying to establish a mineral value for a given deposit. Ernie Lehman wrote to this author after last year's column appeared and he quoted the lease rates for lead and zinc on federal land. He states, from first hand information, that the leases are based on a percentage of net smelter return as follows: 4% for the first five years, 4.5% for the next five years, and 5% thereafter. The figures used in last year's column ($ per st) came from dividing reported royalty income by reported production. The information reported last year merely translates the results of the net smelter return (as written in the lease) to royalty income per ton to the US Government for the various years. Statistics from the Minerals Management Service of the Federal Government show that oil and gas account for 40% and 53%, respectively, of the Federal royalty income. Coal accounts for about 4% and all other minerals, the remaining 3%. Oil and gas leases are mostly at 12.5%. Most of the coal leases are at 12.5% for surface mining operations and 8% for underground mining. Many of the other commodities are leased at 5%, which has been true for decades. Relative to Federal leases, this year's table shows some percentages and some costs per ton. This was done to give information about the leases and also to show income produced by various commodities. Note that some commodities have a variation in $/ton even though the royalty percent is the same. These variations result from a combination of factors that influence the value of a mineral commodity. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; *quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give the location - either by state, US geographic area or Canadian province; the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. Results are presented for the first phase of an experimental program to study the feasibility of using acoustic velocity for predicting the state of stress in a rock mass. Compressional wave velocities were determined axially in cylindrical samples during uniaxial compression for several rock types conditioned in dry and water-saturated environments. Results indicate that in rocks containing compressible voids or cracks, substantial velocity change occurs with the application of stress in the lower (below 100 MPa) stress regime. The effect norm- ally is nonlinear, however, and diminishes to asymptotic values when cracks or voids become closed or with saturation. Empirical prediction equations were derived for each rock type by linear and nonlinear regression analyses, and correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the equations that best fit the stress- velocity data. The operational range for predicting stress using compressional-wave velocity appears to be within the range of vertical stress expected in most shallow to intermediate depth mining operations (less than 1,000 m). Based on the experimental results to date and theoretical considerations, it appears that the technology can be advanced to predict in situ stress based on acoustic P-wave velocity determinations in most mining situations.

The naturally occurring aged manganese oxide coated on the granular media was found to have a catalytic effect on the removal of low concentration of Mn(II) (-1 ppm) from drinking water. Applying this principle, a manganese removal technique was developed for removal of higher concentration of Mn(II) (-100 ppm) from mine drainage by using various aged filter media and synthesized granular media with manganese oxide coatings. Laboratory-scale continuous granular media column experiments were conducted to assess the feasibility of manganese oxide-coated granular media for Mn(II) removal from synthesized mine drainage. The removals of Mn(II) were evaluated as a function of operation parameters including solution pH, manganese oxide concentration coated on the media, interstitial velocity, and oxidant concentration of influent. Higher solution pH and/or higher manganese oxide concentration promoted the removal of Mn(II) on the oxide-coated granular media under low interstitial velocity. Addition of sodium hypochlorite as an oxidant in the influent resulted in continuously regenerated oxidized surface to serve as the catalyst for Mn(II) oxidation reaction on the surface of oxide-coated media.

This paper describes the results of a series of comparative studies in which polygonal, IDS, and kriging were compared for their local estimation accuracy. The specific objective of this study was to determine the impact that the particular nature of the mineralization has on the results of such comparative studies. The study was performed on simulated coal deposits and the evaluation parameter chosen was the coal thickness. For this study, many conditionally simulated deposits having different degrees of seam thickness continuity were first developed. Each simulated deposit covered an area of 30,000 ft x 30,000 ft which was, in turn, subdivided into 100 mine planning blocks of 3,000 ft x 3,000 ft in size. Thickness estimation was made for these mine planning blocks using surrounding DDH assays. In all cases tested, e.g., from a perfect continuity to a complete lack of continuity in coal seam thickness, kriging gave the best estimates among the three, followed by IDS and polygonal methods. As expected, the relative efficiency (i.e., superiority) of kriging over other estimators was highly dependent on the nature of mineralization.

For the first time, the influence of stearyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (STAC) as a collector, on the flotation behavior of lepidolite (Uljin, South Korea) was systematically examined in Denver Sub-A cells. Flotation tests were carried out by varying amount of STAC (50?200 g/ton), feed size (-65, -100, -150, and -200 mesh), and solution pH. The impeller speed of 1000 rpm, flotation time of 10 min and AF-65 (a frother) of 250 mL/ton were invariably applied. In order to complement flotation experiments, zeta potential measurements and XRD analysis were conducted. XRD results showed that the ores were mainly composed of lepidolite, muscovite, quartz, calcite and albite. In addition, zeta potential results showed that isoelectric points were about 2.5, 2.3, and 9.7 for quartz, albite, and calcite, respectively, and lepidolite was determined to be less than 2. Overall, the results of 3-stage flotation showed that Li2O grade and recovery tended to increase with increasing STAC dosage and decreasing feed size. In addition, Li2O grade increased with decreasing pH. The results were explained by the extent of the interaction between STAC and each mineral.

What Is Soda Ash? Soda ash is one of the most widely used chemicals in the world. It is an important raw material in the manufacture of glass, paper, soap, petroleum products, metals, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, plastics, and a host of other items essential to every day living. In ancient times, soda ash was obtained from water solutions of various desert earths. Later, it was produced by leaching the ashes of wood and seaweed. For the past 100 years, it has been manufactured by the ammonia-soda process, which employs large quantities of salt, limestone, and coal as raw materials.

Silver ore was discovered at Aspen in 1879, but the district did not reach full production until 1888 after lawsuits were settled and railroads furnished less expensive transportation to the outside world. The boom years were 1888-92; production declined thereafter. From the middle 1920's until 1950, the Midnight mine in the Richmond Hill district furnished most of the output in the Aspen quadrangle. Since 1950, little mining has been done at Aspen. The metals produced were silver, lead and zinc. Native silver dissolved from the sulfide ores was redeposited by waters circulating as deep as 300 m below the land surface, resulting in great secondary enrichment of many of the deposits. Over 100 million ounces of silver were produced in the Aspen quadrangle. Low-grade lead-zinc deposits remain between the old workings locally, and data available suggest that primary ore below levels mined is also of low grade. The ore occurs in the Mississippian Leadville Limestone and the lower part of the Pennsylvanian Belden Formation in sites that were made favorable for deposition by a number of stratigraphic and structural factors.
