Planning the primary development of a mineral deposit usually is done only once during the life of a mine. As a consequence, not optimizing the primary development of a mineral deposit can cause disadvantages over the whole life of a mine and can lead to higher costs. As a contribution to an improved primary development design procedure beyond the already existing work a study of the identification and quantification of the influence of parameters on primary development based on operational data from working mining operations has been completed. Based upon such a quantification of the influence of parameters a sequenced decision model was developed, that enables to develop an initial concept for the design of the accesses from the surface based upon a few critical parameters. Such a model will not replace detailed planning work within a feasibility study, but it is intended to reduce the amount of planning efforts at an early project stage through providing information what are most likely economic solutions, based on simple rules.

"A walk through the exhibit hall or a glance at the technical programing that was offered at the 2019 SME Annual Conference & Expo and CMA 121st National Western Mining Conference in Denver, CO, Feb. 24-27 makes it evident that the mining industry is an innovative one that is on the cutting edge of technology. However, a glance at the nearly 6,700 attendees of the conference and it is also evident that while the industry is moving forward at a rapid pace in some areas, it is lagging behind in terms of diversity, both in gender and ethnicity.At Monday morning’s keynote session, Hannah Ubi, a millennial and a public speaker who joked that she is the proud owner of a sixth-place swimming trophy and a number of participation medals, addressed a full house that consisted of many men with gray hair or balding heads. The issue of an aging workforce that is rapidly being depleted by retirements is not a new one for the mining industry. In fact, it has been a concern for the industry for more than a decade. The central question has long been, “when the current senior-level people begin to retire, how do we replace them, and how do we fill the knowledge gap that is walking off into the sunset?” SME has been on the front lines in searching for solutions to the impending problem and, along with industry partners, has worked hard to develop programs that will address these issues. Among other efforts, the Society has developed a Ph.D. fellowship program to encourage people to remain in academia to teach the next generation and to help train the next generation to take over in the private sector.“The SME Foundation’s Ph.D. and Career Development Grant program is exceeding expectations at this point with two Ph.D. students graduating and taking a position in academia and two professors achieving tenure,” SME Executive Director Dave Kanagy said during the conference.The Society’s Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) has done its part to help educate future generations about the mining industry with initiatives like EngineerGirl, the Boy Scout Merit Badge and Move Mining, the Shark-Tank-style competition that was held on Monday with five finalists competing for the top prize (ME, April 2019, page 53)."

The present work describes an investigation of a hydrometallurgical process for the recovery of mercury from spent silver oxide button cells. The cell paste was leached in nitric acid to solubilize silver, mercury and zinc. The optimum leaching conditions, in which mercury is entirely converted to Hg2+ ions and, therefore, does not coprecipitate with silver chloride during treatment with potassium chloride solution, were 1.0 M HNO3, 45° C, 1 hour and 200 rpm. After the silver was removed from the solution, mercury was cemented out with zinc powder with an efficiency greater than 99%. In the cementation experiments, the amount of zinc powder, shaking rate, temperature and solution pH were investigated in detail. The mercury recovery (%) increased as the amounts of zinc powder and the temperature were increased. Zinc hydroxide was precipitated from the waste solution by the addition of sodium hydroxide. The Zn(OH)2 precipitate was then converted to zinc oxide. The proposed process is proven to be simple, straightforward and environmentally friendly.

"More than 6,300 people attended SME’s 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ and many of them made the trip to the conference to take part in the excellent technical sessions that are presented on a yearly basis by the Society.Holding true to form, this year’s conference was full of options. In fact, this year there were 121 technical sessions and 751 presentations to chose from. The following is a sample of some of the technical sessions as seen through the eyes of the editors of Mining Engineering and SME technical papers.SME Sections Sharing Success: Changing thePublic Perception of MiningThis session was a workshop on how several local sections were effective in getting the message out to their communities and schools about the value of the extractive minerals industry. Several sections shared their outreach successes, including the Mining in Society merit badge activities by the Minnesota Section by Julie Lucas and SME’s participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan by Frank McAllister.Dan Alexander highlighted activities by the Pittsburgh Section, such as preparing minerals kits and pamphlets for elementary school classes and regional science fairs. The West Virginia University Student Chapter used the kits as handouts at their local gem and mineral show. School speakers in full mining gear were especially interesting to the young children.Other speakers were Michael Linn, Paradise Valley Unified School District — Business and School Partnerships; and Greg Kruse, Central Wyoming Section of SME — What makes a successful section?Engineering Competency ModelAmerican Association of Engineering Societies and the U.S. Department of Labor, with a grant from the United Engineering Foundation, developed a guide to the set of skills necessary for success in the engineering community -- Knowledge – Skills – Abilities — needed for all disciplines.Various engineering societies are now writing the Tier 5 occupation-specific requirements. "INTRODUCTIONThe South Napa Earthquake of 2014 caused ground motion at numerous reinforced concrete-lined (shotcrete-lined) winery tunnels in Napa County and Sonoma County, California. The occurrence of seismic ground motion at these tunnel complexes, known as wine caves, presented an opportunity to reevaluate seismic performance of reinforced concrete and reinforced shotcrete lined tunnels. The authors of this paper updated the most recent comprehensive compilation and evaluation of case studies by Power and others (1998), which correlates peak ground acceleration (PGA) at tunnel sites to damage. For this update, the authors evaluated the seismic performance of 31 wine caves near the South Napa Earthquake epicenter; including some of the 90 wine caves they designed since 1991, some caves designed by others, and additional caves constructed by contractors that they frequently work with. Tunnel designers can use the new data presented in this paper to help evaluate the usefulness of detailed seismic design analyses. THE SOUTH NAPA EARTHQUAKE The South Napa Earthquake occurred at 3:20 AM Pacific Daylight Time on August 24, 2014. Figure 1 shows the approximate location of the epicenter, the measured/estimated PGA contours, and the location of wineries with wine caves added to the database where the PGA was at least 0.2 g. The epicenter was along the West Napa fault, about 5 miles south-southwest of downtown Napa, California. The earthquake moment magnitude was 6.0, and measured/estimated PGAs were up to about 0.7 g. The duration of strong shaking was about 10 seconds. This earthquake was characterized by right lateral strike-slip fault movement, ground surface rupture, and after slip at the ruptures. Increased surface water flows were observed at seven creeks after the earthquake. Groundwater level rises of up to 5 feet were observed in Sonoma County wells after the earthquake. The earthquake was the largest seismic event in the San Francisco Bay Area, which includes Napa and Sonoma Counties, since the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. The Napa event caused an estimated $400 million in damage. This damage included moderate to extensive structural damage to older commercial buildings and to some newer buildings in downtown Napa. This damage resulted from ground motions, subsequent fires, and failed underground utility systems."

"The I-70 Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel (EJMT) Fixed Fire Suppression System (FFSS) will help protect the traveling public as well as the entire tunnel itself, which is a critical asset of the Colorado highway system. This project is part of an effort to avoid any closure or long-term damage to these tunnels after a fire event. Historically, the EJMT complex has experienced two to three fires a year. While CDOT has firefighting capability at the EJMT complex, the fixed fire suppression system will provide first responders the critical time needed to safely approach the scene and take action, and is a necessary tool in combating tunnel fires, keeping the public safe, protecting the tunnel structure, and minimizing disruptions to traffic. This paper provides a case history of the first-of-a-kind design and construction of the EJMT FFSS. Major project elements include; water-only deluge fire suppression system, fiber optic linear heat detection system, updated fire alarm system and new drainage system. PROJECT BACKGROUND The I-70 EJMT FFSS was awarded to the Design Build Team lead by Barnard Construction, supported by Rondinelli Life Safety, BCER Engineering, ILF Consulting, Western States Fire Protection and Systems Group. The team conducted successful live fire tests at the Boulder Regional Fire Training Facility in November 2014, with the final design of the FFSS and other supporting infrastructure completed in the spring of 2015. Construction began in early summer of 2015 and the project was completed in December 2015. While CDOT currently has firefighting capability at the EJMT complex, this project features an intelligent linear heat detection system that can accurately identify a fire within feet of its location and subsequently activate the corresponding water-only FFSS deluge zone, bringing water in from an existing supply system on the west side of Loveland Pass. The detection system also activates cameras so the EJMT onsite control room personnel can view and better assess a fire event. The uniqueness of this design is that the majority of the installation occurred above the traffic lanes in the tunnel, which resulted in minimal impacts to motorists below. The fire suppression system will help protect the traveling public as well as the tunnel structure, a critical asset to the highway system. This project is intended to reduce damage and avoid long-term closures of the tunnel due to fires. A long-term closure could cost Colorado billions of dollars and negatively impact tourism along the I-70 mountain corridor."

Flotation tests were carried out on 6 coal samples of different rank as well as their oxidized samples. A mixture of diesel oil and alcohols was used in these tests. Surface oxidation caused a distinct decrease of the flotation recovery with some improvement in the grade The reduction in the recovery increased with increasing the concentration of the oxidizing agent. The floatability of low rank coals was affected by oxidation to a higher degree than medium and high rank coals. The recovery size curves of oxidized samples mere similar in shape to that of non-oxidized coals.

"What is your history and how did you get involved in mining?Like many SME members, I came from a mining community with a family history in mining, in my case Walkerville, MT. Both of my grandfathers were underground miners. My father was a miner for a short time. He later sold drinks to the miners. Unfathomable by today’s standards, my dad would pick up the miners’ checks at the pay office and have them cashed and waiting with a shot and beer for the miners when their shift ended. My mother was a nurse, who from time to time, would patch up an unfortunate miner. I remember walking past multiple picket lines on the way to and from grade school, watching homes being boarded-up. I grew up with a deep respect for the critical relationship between labor and management.I had no intention of going into mining and initially set out to pursue a career in chemical engineering. But I attended my first two years of engineering at Montana Tech, due to the proximity and affordability. This is where I met Dr. Tom Finch, a mining professor who taught statics to the engineering students. After a coaching session in a hallway, half way through my sophomore year, I switched to mineral processing engineering. In his colorful way, Professor Finch advised me that, “You do not want to make #@*!! erasers and #@*!! Jell-O the rest of your life go talk to the guys in mineral processing.” He was very persuasive and here I am today.How about your involvement with SME?I encountered SME out of school and a little later in my career. Terry Maio and Jim Arnold invited me to local section meetings in the Missouri Lead Belt. That was my first exposure to the technical programming and relationship building that was possible at the local level. After Ozark Lead shut down and I relocated to Nevada, Rich Johnson, Scott Barr and Dave Collins encouraged me to attend my first annual meeting in Salt Lake City, UT. I joined SME at that time and was fortunate to be engaged by members like Art Schweizer and Jim Arnold, and I soon began the leadership progression for the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division. Since then, I have supported SME at the national and the local level serving in multiple roles and capacities."

"Most, if not all longwall gobs contain explosive gas zones (EGZs), i.e., zones of explosive methane-air mixtures that can cause – and have caused – mine fires and explosions. If the coal is prone to spontaneous combustion, oxygen penetration into the gob must be avoided. This paper summarizes the significant research findings from five years of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling research conducted at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) under funding from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). CSM Researchers have developed CFD modeling techniques to identify where and under what circumstances EGZs can form in longwall gobs and how EGZ formation and oxygen penetration depend on the ventilation method, face and bleeder ventilation parameters, injection of inert gases and the operation of gob ventilation boreholes. Recognizing these explosion and fire hazards is an important first step in improving the safety of longwall coal mines. CSM modeling research has shown that EGZ formation can be effectively controlled by adjusting ventilation parameters, choosing the proper ventilation pattern and injecting inert gases where necessary. INTRODUCTION In a project sponsored by the NIOSH Office of Mine Safety and Health Research, researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have examined gas compositions and flows in longwall gobs in order to assess explosion and fire hazards. Since gob areas are inaccessible, researchers developed a series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical modeling tools to characterize these hazards. A variety of CFD models were developed to cover progressively sealed as well as bleeder ventilated gobs for both coal and trona mines. The explosion and fire hazards posed by EGZs in longwall gobs can be summarized as follows.• If the EGZ lies closely behind the longwall face, flames and pressures from an explosion can penetrate the shield supports and reach the active face area, creating blast trauma, burn hazards and toxic, unbreathable atmospheres. • EGZs can be pushed around inside the gob by roof collapses and cave-ins. If they get pushed out into the face area, sudden methane inundations and explosion hazards in face areas can result. • Fresh air flowing into the gob can create an explosion hazard as the gas composition in the gob moves from fuel-rich inert to explosive, creating EGZs. • Ignition sources inside the gob can be frictional ignitions or spontaneous combustion. • Bleeder ventilated gobs are surrounded on all sides by an EGZ that forms along the fringe areas between the fresh-air ventilated bleeder entries and the methane-rich interior of the gob. It is suspected that diffusion flames can propagate rapidly along these EGZ fringes if an ignition occurs"

Of all the industrial clay minerals, attapulgite probably enjoys the widest variety of applications. A review published over three years ago by Haden and Schwint (18) cited some 80 individual uses, a list which continues to grow. In its near half-century of commercial life, attapulgite has received a generous share of research study and patent development effort, both on the part of producers as well as consumers. This work has been divided between understanding the mineral's structure or properties and applying it to specific end-uses. Naturally, information gained from the former has pointed toward opportunities in the latter. References of particular significance are cited throughout the text. Attapulgite's variety of uses derives from the unique three-dimensional structure and needle-shaped particle form of this crystalline hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. Its inherent colloidal and sorptive properties are well known, and distinguish it from its sister clay minerals. Attapulgite is characterized by its high surface area, porosity, sorptivity, and decolorizing power. Its slips or slurries are viscous and thixotropic, however, unlike bentonite are not flocculated by electrolytes. In Table I are compared the general properties of attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolin. The properties in Table I are documented in greater detail by the wealth of scientific literature which has been published on the composition (14)(15), structure (6)(16), surface (16)(4)(22)(24), adsorption (31)(4)(5)(25), rheology (10-11)(12)(13)(26)(27)(32), plasticity (30) (31), and chemistry (23)(3)(7) of attapulgite. Attapulgite is the principal mineral constituent (70 to 80%) of attapulgite clay as it is commercially produced in the Georgia-Florida area of the United States. As mined, this clay also contains 10 to 1S% montmorillonite, sepiolite, and other clays; 4 to 8% quartz, and 1 to 5% calcite or dolomite. Coal mining companies in Australia are managing the high-consequence risks across their operations more effectively by using an interactive online risk management system known as Riskgate Developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) at the University of Queensland, Australia, Riskgate contains detailed information about 11 high-consequence risk areas (called topics in the system) for opencut and underground coal mines (Table 1). The existing topics are: fires; strata control for underground mining; ground control for opencut mining; tires; isolation; collisions; explosions and explosives; manual tasks; and trips, slips and falls. Every Riskgate topic is focused on coal industry activities (mining, processing, transport and storage). The scope includes mine sites, lease areas and mine infrastructure (mobile, fixed plant, field equipment, buildings, road and rail transport), and all aspects of the mine life cycle from design through to decommissioning. The topics uniformly recognize that a loss of control can result in injury or fatality, equipment damage, production loss, reputation loss and environmental damage. However, the priority focus for Riskgate is the safety of mine personnel.

The Two Rivers Water Reclamation Authority (TRWRA) in Monmouth County, New Jersey, is replacing its aging Pleasure Bay Interceptor (PBI) with a new 54-in interceptor in a 3,250-foot long 8 to 10-foot diameter tunnel and a new 50-mgd main pump station (MPS). A comprehensive phased geotechnical investigation was performed, including SPTs, CPTs and geophysics. A channel filled with soft marine sediments was identified. The tunnel is set in stiff to hard marine soil to enable using a less expensive open-face TBM. The thickness of tunnel cover under the channel is optimized through numerical analyses to avoid a deeper pump station yet maintaining tunnel stability with controlling seepage.

A number autonomous operations is in place in several, mainly in fenced areas, where safety is assured by locking off the entire area for other traffic. However autonomy can be brought much further if functional safety is assured and a real mixed traffic of autonomous and manually operated vehicles is possible. MobileTronics has created a modular software and control framework for autonomous machines. The paper covers application examples in which the deterministic object recognition in combination with probabilistic algorithms and sensors is used as a basis for functional safe certification of mixed traffic autonomy.

The construction and modification of tunnels brings a requirement for precise measurement of convergence and divergence to safeguard the structure, maintain safety and provide the assurance needed to maintain efficient progress. Established methods include manual measurement using tape extensometers and automated methods using photogrammetry and automated total stations. Drawbacks include the need for frequent access, power supply, cabling, and cost. The paper describes how the development of reliable optical displacement sensors (ODS) has changed the landscape. ODS sensors are connected to a long-range wireless mesh communications network via a solar-powered gateway outside the tunnel, with data instantly transmitted to the internet. A sensor and its reflector target can be installed in 20 minutes and is maintenance free for a decade. Tunnel movement is measured to sub-millimeter precision with repeatability of ±0.15 mm. Integration of a triaxial tilt sensor allows slope distance to be converted to horizontal and vertical changes and allows rotational movement to be determined. Applications include new-build and long-term structural health monitoring. Case studies will be given, including the refurbishment of rail tunnels in Spain where the ODS measured movement during track lowering in a situation where no other automated system was considered viable.

The paper about to be presented deals with the relatively straightforward problem of mining two seams of coal separated by an interval. This may seem to be a simple problem but within a twenty-mile radius of Consolidation Coal Company's Burning Star # 4 Mine at least seven (7) different techniques of two-seam mining have either been tried or are now in use. This great variety of techniques should point out that there is no single simple solution; a conclusion often reached when dealing with mining problems. As a background for the techniques presently in use at the Burning Star # 4 Mine, we will briefly outline the other five (5) stripping techniques used in the area: 1. Captain Hine 6360 Range Diagram (Figure 1) 2. Leahy Mine Range Diagram (Figure 2) 3. Burning Star # 3 Mine 5860 Range Diagram (Figure 3) 4. Burning Star # 3 and # 4 Mines Dragline in Pit Range Diagram (Figure 4) 5. Captain Hine 2570/5561 Range Diagram (Figure 5) Each of these techniques was chosen because it provided the best and least expensive alternative for mining the coal under the particular restraints encountered. The Mine Engineers at our Burning Star # 4 Mine, Mr. Dennis Mahan and Mr. William Weaver, will now detail two additional mining techniques, out-lining our experience to date.

A two level risk analysis procedure which is specially designed for use in river environments, is presented. The first level risk assessment (Level I) is often adequate for purposes of most projects, and entails hazard assessment, exposure identification, consequence estimation, and risk characterization. Two unique features of the method are the Composite Hazard Rating system, which is used in hazard assessment, and a formalized decision model for risk characterization. The risk characterization procedure provides information on the acceptability of risks, can be used to distinguish between the relative severity of risks, and to evaluate whether more advanced risk assessment would be required.

Impurity minerals in fluorspar ores and concentrates from a deposit in Southern Africa have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy. The principal impurities are quartz, calcite, aegirine, apatite, ankerite, magnetite, goethite, and synchysite [Ca(La,Ce,Nd)(CO3)2F]. Cathodoluminescence microscopy was found to be very useful in studying the character of the fluorite and especially for recognizing the presence of apatite and calcite impurities. Fluorite exhibits blue, calcite shows yellow, and apatite has white, light purple, and pink cathodoluminescence. The cathodoluminescent character of apatite varies with its geological environment and position in the orebody. The results of this microscopic study show that phosphorus present in fluorite concentrates occurs principally in binary locked apatite-fluorite particles. Successive fluorite cleaner concentrates contain progressively smaller amounts of locked apatite-fluorite particles. Free apatite has been effectively partitioned to the final tailings.

In this paper, we present design and implementation details of a fuzzy-behavior-based controller for an automated excavator. This robotic excavator must be equipped with sensors, actuators and an embedded control system. The excavator controller uses neural-networks to interpret forces and torques gathered from bucket mounted force sensors during the excavation process. Implementation details and experimental results using the fuzzy behavior based excavation controller are given for several excavation tasks. These excavation tasks demonstrate some of the complex skills that are essential for an autonomous mining excavator controller.

The difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for over-age mobile mine equipment at the Gay Mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians, or computer oriented. The Gay Mine is located 17 miles east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Company and the FMC Corporation with 1.5 MM - 2.0 MM tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24 yard scrapers; twenty-one 30-50 ton end dump trucks; four 32 42 yard shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units. Authorization of capital expenditures for equipment replacement is dependent upon a favorable profitability index (true rate of return on investment) plus a favorable payout time. The system is based on cash flows and requires the determination of (1) the net cash outflows in the form of capital expenses plus (2) the expected cash inflows resulting from reduced expenses and depreciation tax credits. After adjustments for taxes and the time value of money, the net amounts are used to calculate the required indices. The basic elements for the system related to the replacement of mobile mine equipment include: (1) the determination of dollar penalties to be expected from the continued use of aging equipment; (2) the selection of equipment that will provide the greatest return on the investment dollars; (3) the quantification of the expected savings; and (4) the calculations of the prescribed indices.
