HIGH SPEED RAILWAY NETWORK Spain is a very adequate country to develop the high speed railway network thank to its geographical feature which has a 600km long radius, from Madrid- the capital that covers mostly the whole country. Therefore, the railway is a major competitor of the airline. In Spain, the new access to the north and northwest is nowadays the most important railway project which will allow a significant saving of time in the near future to the central plateau and the northern territories. Time savings as well as strict environmental considerations have been the main objective of various studies during the last decade leading to Guadarrama and Pajares tunnels as ones of the optimum solutions. Cordoba-Malaga high speed railway, the extension of the present Madrid—Sevilleline, through the Abdalajis range and the rail project to cross oriental Pyrenees between Spain and France are another two samples of large tunnels currently underway. In these four projects, the ground already encountered and to be soon encountered is highly variable, from very hard granite and gneiss in Guadarrama and Pertus to very poor argillite in Abdalajis, shale in Pajares and schist in Pertus. A number of faults are also expected. Hence, double shield hard rock TBM has been chosen. Figure 1 shows a general scheme in four projects. These four projects represent a total of 2 × 68 km of which 87 km are under DRAGADOS contracts. PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY DRAGADOS Guadarrama Tunnels This project is the longest twin tunnel with 28.377km, in Spain and considered one of the longest in Europe. The operating speed will be 300 km/h. This tunnel will link Madrid and the north territories through Guadarrama range. (Figure 2). The south portal is placed at el. 997.8m above the sea level. The tunnel starts with an inclination of 3‰, increasing until 15‰. After 6,620m length, the tunnel passes under the Morcuera ridge with an overburden of 960m. After 13,400m length, the elevation is 1,024m which is the highest point, and then the tunnel declines with a slope of 9.5‰, 2‰ and 19‰ until the north portal in Segovia province. We are in the midst of a transportation revolution. From the Wright Brothers to the SST. From the Toonerville Trolly to the 120-mile-an-hour Northeast Corridor train. From Christopher Columbus to Neil Armstrong. There is another side to this revolution and it is going on every day at our mines and factories. We call it bulk distribution. Perhaps ordinary sounding, but every bit as exciting as those other transportation innovations. Basically, we have gone from bag to bulk, and in the process reached that Last Frontier in manufacturing cost savings. By revitalization of our distribution system, we have made it possible for our mines and factories to realize fully the vast economies of spage-age manufacturing techniques and accomplishments. The pacesetters in this distribution revolution have been you gentlemen, the producers and shippers of dry mineral products. In this area bulk distribution grew up. And here most of the current innovations are being introduced. Management of your industry was early to realize the economic advantages of bulk distribution. Distribution costs of your products comprises a sizeable, portion of the selling price and management is sensitive of any developments which may even slightly reduce the cost of transportation, marketing or the exploration of new frontiers.

This paper deals with some aspects of concrete construction in remote locations and/or cold climates. The writer's experience covers 25 years in construction in western and Central Canada. I will bring forth some pertinent observations and cost facts learned from this experience. Let us start by saying that there is nothing more important than preplanning the entire project. By this I mean the production of the engineering design, working drawings, soliciting of prices and ordering of all equipment and contractors work, the delivery of all equipment and all onsite work. All of this should be placed on a master schedule, preferably a C.P.M. We have been using C.P M. Scheduling for all of our work for 5 years and have found it in-valuable. This preliminary schedule will show initial items of work and target dates. After main equipment orders are placed and deliveries confirmed, the construction schedule can be revised to include manpower and construction equipment requirements. From this information the size of camp is determined. This, of course, must be ordered several months ahead. The manpower schedule can be broken into trades to tell us the number of men of each trade required at any time. This is important in helping to determine where the men must come from and whether or not any incentive is needed to get them. The schedule will also point out if it is impossible to get the project closed in before winter becomes too severe unless overtime is worked or the project is started in early spring. In most parts of Canada cold weather starts in October and lasts through April. A common term of reference has been to wait for the frost to come out of the ground before starting work in the spring. "BACKGROUND In the event of an explosion or fire in an underground mine, workers can be exposed to a deficiency of oxygen, an excess of carbon monoxide, or both. These threats can occur as separate conditions or simultaneously. A lack of oxygen in the breathing air can only be addressed via the use of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) acting as a source of oxygen. An excess of carbon monoxide can also be addressed via the use of an SCBA, but if the threat occurs in isolation (that is, the atmosphere still contains sufficient oxygen to support life) and the concentration of the threat gas is not extreme (< 2%) then the carbon monoxide threat can also be addressed by the use of a filter self-rescuer (FSR). Used together, the SCBA and FSR offer a far more efficient and universally capable life support system than when used in isolation. However, the SCBA does not take advantage of the fact that the surrounding atmosphere likely contains some level of useable oxygen; i.e., the SCBA always supplies the total required oxygen from its limited supply, resulting in a ceiling on its useful life regardless of the level of oxygen in the surrounding air. To address this technology gap, what is needed is a ""smart"" SCBA that provides filtration and catalytic protection against threat gasses and has an extended duration life-sustaining oxygen inhale stream independent of the threat content and oxygen deficiency of the surrounding atmosphere. DEVELOPMENT Developed under contract with NIOSH the Smart Escape SCBA is comprised of three major components including; 1) oxygen supply, 2) oxygen sensing & dosing electronics and, 3) a CO catalyst and carbon bed broad spectrum FSR. The SCBA is designed as a hybrid system that provides non-toxic breathing air by using an approved Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear filter self-rescuer and a catalyst to convert high levels of carbon monoxide to harmless carbon dioxide (CBRN FSR/CO). In addition, the Oxygen Sensing & Dosing Electronics (OSDE) package adds sufficient oxygen to make up for deficiencies detected in the ambient air (Figure 1). By making use of the ambient oxygen, less oxygen is required for a one-hour unit life. This means that the Smart Escape SCBA fits in a smaller and lighter package than a similar-duration conventional Self-Contained Self-Rescuers (SCSR). Alternatively, taking advantage of available ambient oxygen could offer a significant increase in working duration in a unit with the same size as current SCSRs. The research performed under this NIOSH contract involved numerous tasks including: (1) definition of performance and system requirements for the Smart Escape SCBA, including keeping environmental stressors within acceptable ranges, providing at least one hour of breathable oxygen supply, and using a mask or hood that allows high-quality voice communication; (2) designing, building, and evaluating prototype units to support extensive bench top testing at Avon Protection and third party labs to demonstrate the device’s capabilities; (3) building sufficient quantity of Smart Escape SCBAs designed to be intrinsically safe (per MSHA criteria); (4) testing and evaluation by the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL)."

Mine planners are under pressure to evaluate the impact of changing economic times and newly acquired data on their mine plans. Incorporating changes such as commodity prices, customer sales, fluctuating cost assumptions and newly acquired geologic data requires quick turnaround for model building and planning to keep mine plans on pace with changes as they occur. Because of the length of time required to perform some of the geologic modeling and mine planning tasks, planning frequency may not be keeping pace with the frequency of change. To meet these challenges, one leading North American mining company successfully increased the frequency rate and accuracy of its mine plans to stay current with incoming data, ensuring its mine plans reflect the latest information, thereby minimizing or eliminating production cost variance.

The Windy Craggy polymetallic massive sulphide deposit is located in the extreme northwest corner of British Columbia 40 miles west of the Haines Highway, 90 miles northwest of the port of Haines Alaska. The physical setting is mountainous country but with few peaks rising above 2,000 metres elevation, in contrast to the spectacular mountainous terrain to the north and south in Kluane and Glacier Bay Parks respectively. Valleys are classically U-shaped with incised V-shaped bottoms. The upper portions are still occupied by glaciers, which in the Windy Craggy area are documented as retreating at a rapid rate -in the case of the Tats Glacier of the order of 1% of its mass per year. The outcrops around Windy Craggy show a north-easterly dipping sequence of Mesozoic limey sediments and volcanics being the western limb of a north northwesterly trending syncline. Northeasterly cross folding provides a few complications. The flanks of the syncline have been buttressed by intrusive bodies of granitic affinity.

Calcium carbonate is one of the highest volume industrial mineral products in North America. It is used in filler and extender applications, roofing products, floor tile, glass manufacture, etc. Calcium carbonate has over a dozen major filler and extender applications plus a host of minor uses. North American consumption of calcium carbonate fillers and extenders in 1991 is estimated at over 5,000,000 tons valued in excess of $400,000,000. There were five major suppliers of calcium carbonate fillers in the Middle Atlantic region in 1988 :?Bestone, Genstar, National Gypsum, Thomasville Stone and Lime, and White Pigment. With the exception of Genstar&apos;s Maryland operation, all of these operations are within a few miles of York, Pennsylvania. The Millington Group (TMG) purchased the assets of Bestone Corporation in February of 1989. TMG then seized the opportunity to strengthen its business position by acquiring National Gypsum&apos;s and White Pigment&apos;s Pennsylvania filler businesses in December, 1989 and July, 1990, respectively. By July of 1990 TMG&apos;s filler business acquisitions included six quarries and one underground mine, totaling over 1,200 acres and three processing facilities. The assets were restructured into two new companies - Delta Carbonate, Inc. and Penroc, Inc. (hereafter collectively referred to as Delta). Delta identified the assets of the three predecessor companies as undervalued from the outset. The initial phase of Delta&apos;s turnaround strategy was to reassess the combined mineral. mining, processing, transportation and marketing assets. The second phase was to effectively integrate these resources in order to exploit their inherent synergy.

Faced with decreasing production from the gold heap leach operation, Robinson implemented a drilling and blasting program on the leach pads in 1993. This program offset some of the negative effects of low ore permeability and short circuiting of leach solution that resulted in lower than optimum recoveries. The drilling and blasting program created new solution flow paths and increased gold recovery. Production and pulp assays at depth intervals, prior to and following drilling and blasting, reveal the degree of short circuiting and benefits of the program.

The Los Bronces porphyry copper deposit is located in the high Andes of Central Chile. Ore is mined from several tourmaline breccias and from an earlier porphyry. After years of experience in the geostatistical estimation of reserves in different zones of the ore body, we believe that success lies in considering the evaluation as an integrated process beginning with the analyses of the drilling density and sampling methodology, ending with the critically important reconciliation between the estimated and the actually extracted ore, in general, when errors or differences occur, focus is centered in the calculation stages of geostatistics. However, this paper demonstrates that all the evaluation stages are equally important and require the direct and continuous geologic input to ensure the best possible estimate within the frame of the geologic constraints.

Estimating ground-water inflows in rock deep tunnels is critical to the safety of personnel constructing the tunnel and the cost of construction. This paper presents two case studies, including the Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels, for estimating steady-state ground-water inflows into deep rock tunnels. Statistical methods were applied to packer test data obtained from exploratory borings during geotechnical site investigations, and a semiempirical procedure was used to estimate ground-water inflows. The Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels are deep rock tunnels that exhibit radial flow conditions. For the radial flow condition, a statistical analysis presented in this paper indicates that the semiempirical procedure works well; however, variations in the procedure and/or an insufficient amount of testing could lead to underestimations of the inflow quantities. Modeling using Monte Carlo simulations was observed to be an effective tool for removing data distribution irregularities and incorporating high-end permeability data to derive reasonable ground-water inflow estimates.

Consumer preference for ever-higher laptop performance coupled with laptops’ declining lifespans make them a significant contributor to electronic waste. An in-depth evaluation of elemental composition and distribution is important for determining metal recovery potential and sustainable recovery processes. In this work, the characterization of individual components of laptops is studied for the systematic identification of important elements and for streamlined and structured recycling, to reduce processing steps and improve economics. A process flowsheet highlighting various recycling routes by targeting metals and various components is also proposed.

Interstate 70 running into the mountains west of Denver, CO is the main access to the state?s numerous ski areas and other tourist attractions. As such, the highway is a vital part of Colorado?s economy. Due to the mountainous terrain in which it winds, I-70 is limited to two lanes in either direction. And, during the past few decades, the volume of traffic has increased to the point where motorists encounter major delays, particularly on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings heading west from Denver, and then again on Sunday evenings heading east. In the past, those delays occurred mostly during the ski season. However, many of the mountain towns have been successful in turning their resorts into year-round vacation destinations. A good move economically, but the pressure added to I-70 has caused even greater traffic delays, sometimes to the point where some Front Range residents avoid trips to the mountains.

The surge in demand for battery materials, coupled with environmental challenges linked to battery disposal, underscores the need to recycle spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Green recycling approaches, in particular, have garnered attention for battery recycling. In this study, a hydrometallurgical method using a synergetic organic lixiviant combining methanesulfonic acid (MSA) and citric acid (CA) as an alternative to inorganic mineral acids was introduced as a green approach to recycle cathode materials of LIBs. The conditions for leaching and recovery processes were optimized. Cathode materials were regenerated using the recovered materials. Moreover, the leaching performance and economic feasibility of this leaching system were compared with those of various other organic acids.

With renewed interest in coal slurry pipelines in China, Indonesia, Australia and Canada for electric generation, it appears worthwhile to update the relative economics of transporting coal by slurry pipeline. Three slurry pipeline technologies are evaluated for the commercial transportation of 3.0, 6.0, and 9.0 million tonnes per year (MMT A) example cases, over distances of 250 km, 500 km and 1000 km.
