Exposure?response relationships between the relative risk of lung cancer and quantitative measures of exposure to asbestos are available from a number of epidemiological studies. Meta-analyses of these relationships have been published by Lash et al. (1997) [Lash, T.L., Crouch, E.A.C., Green, L.C., 1997. A meta-analysis of the relation between cumulative exposure to asbestos and relative risk of lung cancer. Occup. Environ. Med. 54, 254?263] and Hodgson and Darnton (2000) [Hodgson, J.T., Darnton, A., 2000. The quantitative risks of mesothelioma and lung cancer in relation to asbestos exposure. Ann. Occup. Hyg. 44, 565?601]. In this paper, the risks derived in these meta-analyses have been compared. Lash et al., concentrated on process and found that the risk of lung cancer increased as the asbestos is refined by processing. Hodgson and Darnton concentrated on fibre type and found that the risk was highest for exposure to amphibole asbestos (crocidolite and amosite), lowest for chrysotile and intermediate for mixed exposure. Some of the differences between the conclusions from the two meta-analyses are a consequence of the choice of studies included. The range of asbestos types included in the studies in the analysis of Hodgson and Darnton was wider than that in Lash et al., enabling differences between fibre types to be analyzed more readily. There are situations where occupational exposure to chrysotile asbestos has shown no detectable increase in risk of lung cancer. Pregrouting is an extremely important part of many rock tunneling projects. However, poor and unsatisfactory performances have been frequently recorded often with very severe consequences, technically and financially. This paper, based on personal knowledge of several relevant case histories, provides recommendations with respect to specification drafting, drilling, water pressure testing, and grouting methodologies, and cementitious grout mix design principles. Even given that the logistical challenges facing tunnel pregrouting from underground will prevent all the sophistication and innovations of contemporary dam foundation grouting being practically implemented, there is still opportunity and need to change “traditional” approaches.

"Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project is under construction in Sri Lanka. This project involves 2 Rolled Concrete Core (RCC) Dams connected through a tunnel currently under construction by Drill and Blast method. The water is transferred from first diversion dam to the 2nd regulatory dam and from which, it will be transferred through a 14 km headrace tunnel to the top of a 650 m deep drop shaft that feeds the high pressure water to an underground powerhouse and turbine chamber for generation of 120 MW of electricity. The Headrace and Tailrace tunnels are being excavated by two 4.4 m diameter double shield TBMs. The headrace tunnel has already passed 5km milestone and is mined in hard rock, while the tailrace tunnel has been completed in rather weak and fractured ground. This paper will review the history of the project along with the geology of the site. The operation of TBM in headrace tunnel will be discussed in more detail, focusing on the challenges of excavating through very strong and abrasive quartzite and gneiss on this site, as well as reaches of tunnel in high inflow of water reaching 400 L/Sec. INTRODUCTION This paper aims to introduce the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project (UOMDP) as a hydro mechanical project in Sri Lanka, targeted generating hydro-electric power, transferring water for irrigation purposes and controlling seasonal devastating flood. This project lies in the south-eastern part of the central highland region of Sri Lanka (Figure 1). The main part of the project is located in the south-western part of the Badulla district in the province of Uva. The south-eastern end of the project site is in the central west of the Moneragala district (province of Uva). Bandarawela is the largest urban setting within the project area, located halfway between the upstream and the downstream ends of the planned hydropower plant and combination of dams, tunnels, and downstream facilities. The Multi-Purpose Project Of Uma Oya is planned to convey water from Uma Oya to Kirindi Oya Basin for hydroelectric energy generation includes Puhulpola RCC Dam on the Uma Oya river, Dyraaba RCC Dam on the Mahatotilla Oya river, a conveyance tunnel from Uma Oya to Mahatotilla Oya (L=3750m), a long feeder tunnel from Mahatotilla Oya to Kirindi Oya. The feeder (power) tunnel Lot consists of a headrace tunnel (L=15554m), the surge shaft (L=200m) and tank on the upstream of the vertical shaft, a vertical shaft with steel lining (L=650m), an underground powerhouse and a tailrace tunnel (L=3650m)."

Due to the transport mechanics of the depositional environment, glacial soils display a very wide range of grain sizes and behavior. Several nonstandard drilling, sampling, and analytical techniques are therefore required to characterize the subsurface. The paper summarizes the geotechnical investigation for the design of a large project in glacial geology, which will include both large and small diameter pressure balance tunneling. The paper focuses on the challenges presented by the glacial environment and the techniques required to identify and characterize it for design and contract document preparation.

As the University of Hong Kong and their advisors planned their new Centennial Campus it became clear that they would have to re-provide existing water reservoirs on an adjacent site with new salt water reservoirs located underground in two new caverns. The existing reservoirs are owned by the Water Supplies Department who provide salt water for sanitary flushing and a separate potable water supply for regular use. Although underground reservoirs had not previously been adopted locally, the planning has been completed to a tight schedule and the construction is well advanced. The need to preserve historic buildings imposed constraints, as did the requirement to minimise potential construction nuisance for the local community and environment. This paper presents the background to the project and the work carried out to develop an innovative, sustainable and environmental acceptable solution. Construction progress to date is also presented.

Lebanon used a TBM for the firsttime to excavate a tunnel in the country. A main beam TBM, built in 1979, bored the 3.8 m (12.5-ft) diameter by 4,020 m (2.5-miles) Madiq Tunnel. The TBM bored through karstic terrain of dolomitic limestone, limestone and marly-limestone rock having near horizontal beds with more than twelve faults crossing the axis of the tunnel. The TBM also encountered more than six major karst features, filled with various combinations of boulders, clay, void space and water. The excavation through these collapsed-breccia zones drastically slowed the TBM?s progress. When complete, which the Madiq Tunnel is a part, the Kesrouane Water Project along the coast will bring fresh and irrigation waters to the parched and heavily populated region north of Beirut. The paper will describe the tunnel geologic features, karst genius, TBM upgrades and performance, and TBM/karst difficult situations

Landsvirkjun—the national electric power company of Iceland—is building the Kárahnjúkar Hydroelectric Project in eastern Iceland. Two glacial river systems will be dammed and channeled through a series of tunnels into a 690 MW underground powerhouse. The Project has a total of 73 km of tunnels to be excavated of which mosthave been completed. From three access adits, three large diameter (7.2 m to 7.6 m),main-beam, gripper-type, Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are being used to complete50-km of the waterway tunnel. Using the TBMs was a first in Iceland to excavate the complex Icelandic basalt formations, which consist of inclined layers of hard basaltic flows with weaker scoriaceous and sedimentary interbeds. Faults, fissures and dykes that frequently cross the lava flows posed both geologic and hydrogeologic difficulties to the TBM tunneling. This paper describes the extreme challenges that the men and equipment had to endure to complete the tunneling, including the harsh winter weather on the surface and the cold, abundant ground water inflows within the tunnels.

Today?s modern mining operations have literally dozens of applications and systems generating data whose information very often, are not crossed or centralized for operational decisions. In remote locations, the information and situation awareness is typically limited to the location itself. In addition, access to that information is limited to a small, select group of personnel that have received training on how to interpret the results. When the situation affects another area of the mine then information is relayed to the applicable areas involved. Few workers have time to analyze the situation thoroughly, to see how it affects the mines symbiotic relationship within all areas of production. If the capability to correlate and measure events and situations that affect your overall key performance indicators are not in place, the opportunity to identify process improvement becomes more difficult.

Flotation separation and recovery of value minerals from ores containing fibrous silicate minerals are known to be quite challenging. Earlier studies have established that the metallurgical challenges (poor selectivity and recovery, high energy consumption, etc.) arise from the impact of the fibrous minerals (with high aspect ratio) on pulp rheology, which was found be rather complex. The complex rheological behavior of ore suspensions containing particles with high aspect ratio and its influence on flotation outcome are investigated in this study. Flotation tests and rheological measurements were carried out with both ores (containing fibrous minerals) and a model system comprising nylon fibers (chemically inert) added to a copper ore that had no fibrous mineral. These studies allowed the determination of contributions of physical properties of the fiber to pulp rheological behavior. Optical microscopy images of the fiber pulp indicated that the fibers entangled to form two levels of microstructures: two-dimensional (2D) aggregates under semi-dilute (< 20% solids) conditions and three-dimensional (3D) microstructures at concentrations > 30% solids. The yield stress (σ) values determined for the fiber pulp were logarithmically related to the volume fraction of the 2D/3D structures. The relationships developed here for different ARs showed that the yield stress of a flotation pulp changes with respect to shape, size, and the concentrations of the microstructures. Implications to the effects of such entangle networks on selectivity of flotation separation are discussed.

This paper is concerned with mineral policy in Ireland and how it might be improved to encourage more exploration and investment in mining in the country. The approach is to first outline the main desirable characteristics of a comprehensive national mineral policy document. This aspirational document is then used to assess the current regulatory, legislative and fiscal frameworks for mining in Ireland. The analysis also contains a brief account of the history, structure and characteristics of the mining industry in Ireland. The main focus of the paper is to identify those aspects of the existing framework that erode Ireland’s attractiveness to mineral investment and to suggest policy improvements.

U.S. Borax’s mine in California’s Mojave Desert is the source of nearly half the world’s supply of refined borates. These minerals are used in hundreds of products, including essential plant nutrients that increase crop yield and quality, and safe building products that protect homes from insects and the elements. Borax’s workforce is also safe. In fact, it is among the safest in the nation. In 2003, the company was recognized by the U.S. Mine, Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for achieving the best safety record among large U.S. mining operations. It was also recognized by its parent company, Rio Tinto, for achieving the best record among its nearly 80 worldwide mining operations. Borax’s safety performance is five times better than the national average. And its workforce recently achieved more than two million hours without a lost-time injury.

Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) is located in Menlo Park, CA. In order to allow for enhanced experiments, the current facilities required expansion. Tunnels were excavated through very weak sedimentary rock interspersed with uncemented zones (Ladera Sandstone) employing the principles of the NATM. The overburden var-ied from 10 to 80 feet. The paper addresses the characterization of Ladera Sandstone that can exhibit the properties of dense sand and weak rock. The paper focuses on the challenges that were encountered during the NATM initial support design and the construction phase including the geotechnical instrumentation, monitoring and design verification process in particular the excavation of the junction between access tunnel and the FEH cavern (49 ft wide by 32 ft high).

The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 in New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be widespread through much of the Tasman fold belts of Eastern Australia. Production is estimated to be some 500,000 carats from several small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration, though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond content has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia during the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives. Of those, 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe, however, the 1200 Ma high-grade Argyle lamproite and associated nearby alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable. Its current annual production is 40 million carats valued at about US$400 million. Production from the open pit will be sustainable until at least 2003.

Tunnel excavation using tunnel boring machines (TBMs), has become increasingly common in recent years, despite the fact that precise evaluation of certain risks have not kept pace with the use of these machines. One of the risks easily overlooked by Engineer and Contractor alike are the effects of abrasive ground on the costs and schedule of a given project. The impacts of worn and damaged TBM cutter heads have been observed on hundreds of tunnel projects around the world. It would appear that a reliable prognosis of the abrasiveness of soils on a project would be of great importance for designers, clients and contractors alike. Several well acknowledged test and prognosis methods already exist for rock, however there is only very limited knowledge available to describe the abrasiveness of soil and its impact on soft ground TBMs. This paper will examine approaches to this problem and suggest a new approach based on a current project undergoing design.

During the 1980s, a revolution has been taking place in industrial minerals marketing. Transportation deregulation and a handful of creative marketing and distribution managers have completely changed the rules for marketing many industrial minerals. Minerals are being transported much farther than in prior decades and at much less cost. Bulk and package terminals are becoming increasingly common as a means to take advantage of freight rate savings and to provide enhanced service to faraway customers. Water and rail transportation are being used increasingly to penetrate markets considered unreachable just a few years ago. No longer do the textbook rules of thumb for industrial minerals marketing apply. This author recalls three of those rules he was taught in mineral economics graduate school in the 1970s. As recorded in class notes: • construction aggregates are seldom shipped more than 32 km (20 miles) from the quarry; • cement is sold within 240 km (150 miles) of the mill; and • industrial sand is sold regionally - it is freight constrained to a market radius of no more than 320 to 400 km (200 to 250 miles) from the plant. And yet, the author looks up in 1989 and observes overland movements of aggregates of many hundred miles, overland movements of cement and industrial sand of 1600 km (1000 miles) or more, and water movements of both aggregates and cement into the United States from sources halfway around the world. Truly, industrial minerals are in the midst of a marketing revolution. The companies that have led this revolution have enjoyed considerable financial success in the 1980s. They have enhanced their profitability by increasing market share, capacity utilization, and average selling prices by taking product to remote markets where premium prices are available. They have consistently outperformed their competition, many of whom remain unaware that the marketing revolution going on around them is actually a transportation/distribution revolution. The successful industrial minerals company of the next 10 to 15 years must participate in the transportation revolution as it continues to evolve. East Pit Lake is an artificially created lake that resulted from the remediation and reclamation of surface coal mining operations at TransAlta Utilities&apos; Whitewood Mine in the Wabamun area west of Edmonton, Alberta. The original excavation resulted from the creation of a mine end cut at the northern extent of the mining operation. The area of the surficial drainage basin that feeds East Pit Lake was relatively small. Therefore, most of the inflow and outflow from the lake would result from regional ground water flow. There was a concern about the lake&apos;s ability to provide a suitable habitat for a sportfish population. To determine the final recovered water level and rates of recovery, a two-dimensional ground water flow model was used. Data supplied by nested piezometers in and around the mine were used to calibrate the computer simulation and assess predicted recovery.

The study evaluates the hydrological behaviour of exposed and covered waste rock dumps. The objectives were to determine the major factors influencing unsaturated flow in waste rock dumps and covers, and to improve the in-situ, laboratory and numerical modeling characterization methods. Using material properties obtained from in-situ and laboratory tests, waste rock dumps of different configurations, with and without covers, were modeled. It was found that a properly designed “Store, divert and release” (SDR) cover allows most of the water to be diverted downslope and discharged outside of the waste rock dumps. The SDR cover seems to work efficiently even in extreme storm events. The numerical modeling results show that the unsaturated hydraulic properties (e.g. air entry value and water entry value) of the materials largely control the infiltration of water into waste rock dumps.
