The underground mining evolution for block cave mines in Chile and worldwide has made important strides in the last decades. Nonetheless, reserves determination in the initial stages of these types of projects—mainly for long-term planning—is not studied in as much detail as it should be, especially regarding the impact on the final value of the enterprise. Today, the first estimation of the size of a block cave mine, typically expressed in tons, tends to determine very large footprints and ore bodies. The resulting large-scale mine is obtained by applying the marginal cut-off grade (COG) to determine reserves. Yet, in many cases, it is possible to obtain an equal or higher benefit, extracting fewer reserves in less time, with a smaller active area, which significantly reduces the project’s uncertainty. To explore scenarios obtained by applying a higher marginal COG in the initial phases of the project, the Hill of Value methodology is used to estimate the net present value (NPV) in relation to the production rate and the COG. However, the application of this methodology considers certain simplifications that generate results which are not completely satisfactory in specific cases. This paper suggests an improvement of this method to obtain more reliable results regarding determination of a COG profile that will optimize the NPVof a block-cave project. The methodology was developed and applied in a massive polymetallic deposit with zinc, lead, and silver mineralization, corresponding to a real block caving project. The methodology provides NPV results that differ by approximately 15% in comparison to the real mine plan, while also being considerably simpler and faster to calculate. In summary, the proposed methodology provides a reasonable and fast procedure to estimate higher than marginal COG that increases the NPV of block cave mine projects.

1. INTRODUCTION According to the classical economic approach of the open market economy, copper supply should be regulated by market forces which are (a) demand and (b) prices. In fact, demand is of primordial importance because prices are a reflection of supply-demand balance: they go up in times of shortages of supply and down when over-supply situation exists. In the past few years, this basic mechanism of market economy has been under pressure from a number of non-market forces, such as social and monetary problems of sane important copper producing countries; structural changes in copper mining companies through mergers with oil companies; and other factors which greatly contributed to distortion of the basic supply-¬demand equation. As a result, we have faced in the last three years a situation of oversupply rarely seen in the past, with a catastrophic fall in copper prices, huge losses at mines and unprecedented indebtedness of copper producers. This has deep repercussions in the copper business and its future supply outlook. This is particularly so when taking into consideration that high indebtedness and high interest rates conspire against the very survival of some traditional producers. As we write this comment (July of 1985), close to one half of U.S. copper production capacity is closed down, sane of it for good, while the same precarious situation exists in Canada, Australia, Zambia, and some other primary producers who cannot face present low prices with equally low costs. The question is then what this situation means for the medium-¬term future, until the end of this decade, Particularly when taking into consideration the fact that some of the factors influencing it are of a long-term character. 2. SUPPLY-DEMAND SITUATION IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS Since the last boon year, in 1979, when world copper consumption reached a record of 9.8 million metric tons of refined copper, demand dropped to only 9.0 million tons in 1982, when the crisis bottomed out, and then steadily recovered to the level of 9.7 million tons in 1984. Meanwhile, copper production, which in 1979 was only 9.4 million tons, in spite of the fall in demand, grew to 9.7 million tons in 1981 and 1983 and only temporarily was cut to 9.4 million tons in 1982 and to 9.5 million tons in 1984. As a result of this imbalance, hugh copper stocks were accumulated with supply systematically out¬growing demand by over 2 million tons at one time. With the Western World refined copper demand running at an average of 115,000 tons per week, this oversupply was equivalent to between 15 and 18 weeks production, i.e. twice as large as normal. This was immediately reflected in very low copper prices. Another contributing factor to relatively low copper prices was the lack of speculator interest for this commodity. Between 1981 and 1984 the world experienced a very intensive period of wealth distribution, high interest rates and intensive restructuring off world economy and its industrial sector. Therefore, much of the available money was attracted to more lucrative and attractive investments rather than to the lack-luster performance of copper, and for that matter, of the metal sector in general. The much announced and discussed recovery of the U.S. economy since 1983, and particularly in 1984, with an overall growth of the GNP by 6.8% in 1984, happened to be more oriented to the service sector than the industrial sector and therefore this recovery was not adequately reflected in copper consumption nor to metals in general. This put serious doubts about the future demand for copper. Consequently copper prices failed to improve in spite of an apparent fall in stocks and a healthy increase in the demand for copper since 1982. At the time of this writing (July, 1985), although same analysts claim that the available stocks are running at about 8 weeks of supply, which are considered to be below normal, copper prices are still very low at between 65 and 67 cents per pound of copper. Leachates from gold heap-leaching mines contain selenium concentrations as high as 2 mg/L. Previous studies report satisfactory selenium adsorption by activated alumina when using relatively "clean" drinking waters. However, the findings of these studies cannot be directly applied to the treatment of mine leachate where other ions compete for the alumina adsorption sites. This study evaluated the adsorption of selenium from a mine leachate to develop design parameters for full-scale activated alumina processes. The study revealed that 68% of the selenium in the leachate could be removed by alumina at pH > 5.0. Silica adversely affected the selenium adsorption capacity. At pH values < 4, silica was poorly adsorbed by alumina and selenium adsorption was improved.

AEROPHINE® 3418A is a unique sulfide mineral promoter produced by Cyanamid, based on phosphine (PH3) chemistry. It has proven effective as a collector for the sulfide minerals of copper and particularly lead (galena), as well as for secondary gold and silver values. AEROPHINE 3418A has widest application as a Cu and/or Pb collector for complex ores of Cu-Zn and Pb-Zn, which frequently have significant quantities of associated precious metal values. Advantages shown in the use of AEROPHINE 3418A are improved selectivities against Zn-and Fe-sulfides, increased precious metals recoveries, reduced total collector consumptions for Cu and/or Pb flotation, and increased flotation kinetics leading to higher recoveries of these values. Operating plant, pilot plant and laboratory test data from treat-ing different ores are presented, demonstrating the advantages in use and preferred application of AEROPHINE 3418A.

The industrial practice of concentration of solids and production of clear solution by gravity sedimentation is an old technology. Through the years, many devices have been designed and built to aid this process. One of the more significant developments was a revolving rake mechanism to convey settled material to a central discharge point of a circular tank, patented in 1907(1). In recent years, clarification systems employing parallel inclined plates have appeared on the market; the original device utilizing this principle was patented in 1886(2). Numerous other methods have been invented, tested, discarded and sometimes re-invented, all with the specific intention of improving the capacity of a particular settling area. Sedimentation theory, as expressed in Stokes&apos; Law, shows that the rate of settling of a particle is directly proportional to the difference in density between the particle and the surrounding liquid and, more significantly, proportional to the square of the particle diameter. Anything that can increase the latter will greatly assist sedimentation and, as a result, flocculation always has been an integral part of sedimentation. Most materials suspended in aqueous media are naturally flocculent to some degree and, hence, are readily concentrated by sedimentation, although sometimes very slowly.

The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, 150 km southwest of Ciudad Juarez. The ore deposit was discovered in 1979, and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2400 tpd from an ore reserve of 8.5M tonnes. Grades average about 8 % Zn, 0.5 % Pb, 0.2 % Cu and 50 g Ag per tonne. Substantial inflows of water into the under-ground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark was operated through a joint venture, Minera Bismark, S.A. de C.V., with U.S. and Mexican partners, but since early 1993, it is wholly Mexican-owned and operated.

An exchange of coal mine specialists was made with the USSR under an "Agreement on Exchanges and Cooperation in Scientific, Technical, Cultural, and other Fields for 1972-73," which was signed by President Nixon and Chairman Breshnev on April 11, 1972.* This exchange, in the field of coal mine safety and scientific research in hazard control technologies, was one of 16 technical exchanges covered under the above agreement. A six-man USA delegation visited the Soviet Union from September 9 to September 21, 1973. The delegation visited four deep mines, three in the Donets Basin and one in the Moscow Basin, a State Safety Research Institute, a Mine Research Station and associated Research and Design Institute, two Research and Design mining equipment institutes, and a Trade Union-sponsored health sanitarium. In Moscow, the delegation received a briefing on the Soviet coal industry from First Deputy Minister Vladimir Fedanov. A similar briefing was given to us on the Donets coal basin by the Deputy Minister S. Saratikyanz of the Ukrainian Coal Ministry. Lengthy technical discussions were held with the mines staff and research personnel at the institutes we visited. In addition, we had detailed discussions with key staff members of two combinats "Donetskugol" and "Tulaugol." In all these meetings, principal topics were matters of safety related to hazards associated with face mechanization, coal transport, methane gas control measures, gas outbursts, coal and rock outbursts, fire fighting add control, explosion suppression and control measures and other related hazard factors. There was also much discussion on miner training, miner&apos;s attitudes toward safety and accident prevention practices, and preparation and enforcement of safety rules and regulations. The delegation was very warmly received and constant attention was given to our needs. Our numerous questions were answered with candor although quite often in not as much detail as we would have liked.

The transportation of solids by slurry pipeline is a rapidly growing field. Although early patents date from the latter part of the nineteenth century, it has only been within the last twenty years that successful long distance slurry transport lines have come into their own. The pioneering efforts in this country include the gilsonite slurry pipeline from Bonanza, Utah, to Grand Junction, Colorado, and the coal slurry pipeline from Cadiz to Cleveland, Ohio. Both of these lines were constructed in 1957 and had a combined annual capacity of about 360 million ton miles. Although the Cadiz pipeline was mothballed in the early 1960&apos;s, the interest in slurry transport systems continues to increase and one engineering and construction company is predicting that by 1980 an annual slurry system rate of more than eight billion ton miles will be achieved. The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple when contrasted against the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve our understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instance more of an art than a science. Risk is a major factor in all mining activities, arising from many internal and external variables. The authors? research has resulted in a systematic method for the quantification of risk in mining projects (Park, 2012), and this research is being presented in a series of papers. The first paper (Park and Nelson, 2013a) identified the variables associated with risk in mining projects, and their effects and was published in the October issue of Mining Engineering magazine. The second (Park and Nelson, 2013b) discussed methods of assessing the overall risk associated with those variables (published at www.me.smenet.org), and presented a statistical model based on a survey of 31 experts. This paper will present an evaluation of the statistical model, using data from previous mining investment decisions in which the authors have been involved.

I will talk today about a porphyry copper exploration program now underway in the Amazon jungle in the southeastern part of Ecuador near the border with Peru. The project is unusual for two reasons: first the deposits are of Jurassic age, 153 m.y.o., which is unusually old for porphyry copper deposits and they may be the most significant pre-Tertiary age porphyry deposits known. Second, the district was found only six years ago which makes this the most recent discovery of a totally new porphyry copper district. The new porphyry district, known as the Zamora River Copper Belt, or the Corriente Copper Belt, is a north trending area 50 km long by 10-15 km wide, which is nearly aligned with the axis of the Jurassic age Zamora batholith and with the course of the Zamora river. Gencor in 1994 initiated a regional grassroots gold exploration program based on reconnaissance geologic mapping and geochem sampling which did not find a gold mine, but which identified the San Carlos porphyry copper system in April, 1995. In a later reorganization between Gencore and Billiton the Ecuador project was transferred to Billiton and between the Gencore work and Billiton’s a total of 10 porphyry copper systems were found over the next four years. In the period of 1997 - 1999 Billiton drilled a total of 11,000 meters of wide spaced core holes in the San Carlos, Panantza and Kutukus prospects. In October 1999 Billiton concluded a farm-out, joint venture agreement with Corriente Resources and Lowell Mineral Exploration for additional exploration of the Zamora property. This is funded by Corriente and managed by Lowell Mineral Exploration and a total of 28,000 m of core drilling was completed through August 2001. An immediate result of the Corriente Lowell project was the discovery of potentially commercial ore reserves in two new deposits at Mirador and Warintza. Additional closer spaced drilling was done in the Panantza deposit and additional drilling is planned at San Carlos, in targets related to Warintza, and elsewhere.

Modifying the hydrophobicity of clay is necessary to accommodate large mycotoxin molecules such as zearalenone (ZEN). In this study, tricaprylmethylammonium (TCMA) chloride and common corn oil were used to modify clay. The results indicate that more than 90 percent of ZEN could be removed using clays modified by TCMA and corn oil at acidic and neutral pH due to the expansion of intergallery spacing as a result of TCMA surfactant intercalation within the clay-forming layers. The removal percentage depends on the pH and amount of clay used. Complete removal can be achieved at acidic pH and small clay amount.

"Lax, misguided, and dangerous" is Rep. James Santini&apos;s description of the official US position on strategic nonfuel minerals. Santini (D-NV), chairman of the House Mines and Mining Subcommittee, criticized the Interior Department for "its long record of benign neglect" regarding the domestic minerals crisis. Santini made his remarks at a news conference at the American Mining Congress convention in San Francisco, where he released his subcommittee report "US Minerals Vulnerability: National Policy Implications." The report-said to be the first major congressional study of the minerals issue by a committee of jurisdiction is the result of a two-year inquiry. The investigation was undertaken, according to the chairman, "because no person or agency in the executive branch of government fully grasps the critical importance of nonfuel minerals to the nation&apos;s economy, defense, and quality of life." The report also urges a larger role for the Department of Defense, which has "stood passively by for many years as a consuming by-stander," according to the report. President Carter&apos;s incomplete Non-fuel Minerals Policy Review also drew the committee&apos;s ire; Santini calls it "a tragic waste that cost tax-payers $3.5 million and the loss of some 13,000 person-days." The subcommittee examined the following issues for its report: • The US minerals industry&apos;s inability to meet national raw material needs under a "hodgepodge of contradictory, restrictive, and irrational" federal regulations; • Dependency on foreign sources of strategic minerals in times of "increasing resource nationalism" and "Soviet mineral expansionism;" • National security needs for foreign mineral resources that do not have effective substitutes; • The US government&apos;s approach to national minerals policy "amid a growing realization that such a policy does not exist." The subcommittee report includes an analysis of public and private studies on nonfuel minerals and discusses a series of policy problem areas that negatively affect domestic production. Capital formation disincentives, tax policies, antitrust enforcement, environmental laws, health and safety regulations, technical problems, and restricted access to federally-controlled public lands contribute to what Santini calls a "tragic irony." "The irony is that we are a nation vastly rich in mineral resources yet our own government chooses to stifle development of these critical raw materials and thereby increase offshore reliance. The tragedy is that we also are ensuring US vulnerability to severe economic dislocations and a weakening of our national security." In just six years, from 1973-1978, the US trade deficit in nonfuel minerals rose from $2 billion per year to $8 billion, according to the report. The country imports more than 50% of 23 critical minerals, including 100% of its manganese, chromium, cobalt and platinum. The US is promoting its dependence on foreign mineral sources at the very time the security of many of those sources is becoming less certain, the report notes. Santini said the subcommittee investigation revealed a vulnerability that may be more serious and pervasive than that of foreign oil. The US may be able to develop alternate energy resources, but there are no effective substitutes for many nonfuel minerals. The report also discloses that US stockpiles of critical and strategic minerals are of inadequate supply and quality. Holdings of some vital minerals are far below present objectives, and for some there are no holdings at all, according to Santini. To resolve the current crisis, the report makes the following recommendations: • Complete immediately President Carter&apos;s Interagency Nonfuel Minerals Policy Review; • Implement (throught the Interior Department) the 1970 Mining and Minerals Policy Act; • Create an Office of Energy and Minerals with the same stature, power, and oversight responsibilities as the Council on Environmental Quality; • Ease federal restrictions on mineral exploration and development on public lands and implement a complete review of public land use policies; •Fund for and fulfill US nonfuel minerals stockpiling objectives; •Increase federal funding for non-

The Surface Mining and Reclamation Act of 1977, PL 95-87 (The Act) granted the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) the duty of collecting fees from the active coal mining activities to be used in abating the hazards associated with abandoned coal mines. Since the passage of the Act, OSM has been instrumental in closing a multiple of mine hazards and in full cooperation with the states involved. Complete mine closures range from simply filling a subsidence hole to exodic designs costing thousands of dollars, such as in the case of the Portal Park swimming pool in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Portal Park olympic sized swimming pool was built over an abandoned coal mine by a group of local citizens and given to the city of Colorado Springs. This pool receives the largest number of users each year. During the past four years, OSM has abated six mine related hazards in and around the pool. During the summer of 1982, the pool started tipping causing the pool waters to run out the west end. This pool tipping and the associated cave-in problems caused great concern to the city and the local users. This citizens concern generated a request from the city for OSM to assist in checking out the pool problems. Early in 1983, OSM initiated a driling program to investigate the subsurface voids. This drilling effort revealed several large voids within a few feet of the pool deck, with all voids inundated with ground water. Therefore, the void filling method favored the hydraulic backfilling needed to be confined to the area under the pool. This confining problem lead to the development of the gravel bulkhead cutoff walls to confine the backfilling effort to the areas under the swimming pool.

Two of Peabody Western Coal Company&apos;s mine operations are the focus of this paper ... Black Mesa Mine and Kayenta Mine, both located in Northern Arizona. These two locations are unique for a variety of reasons. ? The two mines have only two customers, both power plants, one the Southern California Edison&apos;s Mohave Generating Station near Laughlin, NY, the other the Navajo Generating Station near Page, AZ. Close in proximity, these two locations ships nearly 12 million tons of coal per year. ? Material is shipped to these customers two ways: via a 273 mile underground slurry pipeline, which by the way is longest in the world, and by a 17 mile long conveyor to four storage silos. Product is then shipped via train from the storage silos to the plant sites.

"In 2018, the total estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States increased by 3 percent from 2017 to $82.2 billion. The estimated value of metals produced domestically decreased by 4 percent, and the estimated value of indusrial minerals produced domestically increased by 7 percent (Table 1).Some idle U.S. metal mines and processing facilities restarted in 2018, including two primary aluminum smelters in Indiana and Missouri, a rare-earths mine in California and a zinc mine in New York. In contrast, four iron ore mines in Minnesota and a pelletizing plant in Indiana were shut down. Increased oil and natural gas drilling activity in 2018 led to increased production of some industrial mineral commodities that are used for oil and gas drilling, including barite and industrial sand and gravel. Production of industrial minerals primarily used in infrastructure and residential construction — including, cement, construction sand and gravel, crushed stone and gypsum — increased in 2018. Overall, mining activity trended upward for the second consecutive year because of increases in oil and gas extraction and industrial mineral mining (Table 2).Mineral industry performanceDiscussion of mine production is commonly segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as natural aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Tonnages of natural aggregates are orders of magnitude larger than those for most other mineral commodities, thus making direct comparisons based on weight meaningless (Fig. 1)."

Concealed thermal events in longwall gobs present safety hazards for underground coal miners and can significantly interrupt mining production. The probable causes for such thermal events range from coal oxidation at slightly above ambient temperature to smoldering fires due to spontaneous combustion of the broken coal left in the gobs. Locating such “hot spots” is the key step for planning and implementing mitigation measures to bring such thermal events under control. If a mine section, or even an entire mine, has to be sealed, understanding the status of the sealed mine atmosphere is important for the decisions guiding subsequent actions. The gas composition data obtained through the tube bundle mine atmospheric monitoring system is firsthand information of great value. Fire ratios proposed by various researchers and derived from gas composition data are useful in determining the fire status and even approximating the source locations (Timko and Derick, 2006). However, the applicability of each of these ratios under particular conditions should be carefully evaluated. The use of properly combined fire ratios can enhance the certainty of analysis. The explosibility of a sealed mine atmosphere deserves primary concern for safety reasons during seal construction, idle time and reopening of the sealed area.Mine atmospheric monitoring data from a longwall mine with flame fire have been analyzed. Efforts have been made to identify the possible causes, locations and statuses of these events using the obtained gas data, as well as other ventilation, geological and mining parameters. The effect of injected inert gas to control the events has also been quantified. The explosibility of the sealed atmosphere has been determined using two methods.

The Henderson ore body is east of the Continental Divide in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains about 50 miles west of Denver. The ore body is being developed for mining by workings that extend more than 3500 feet below the topographic surface. During construction of the mine workings, ground water in fractures in crystalline rocks has been encountered. From 1969 to 1973, Charles S. Robinson & Associates, Inc., in cooperation with the engineering and geologic staffs of the Climax Molybdenum Company, a division of Amax Inc., studied the ground water geology of the Henderson mine development area. Detailed geologic records of the Henderson mine were available as a result of the exploration, evaluation and development of the mine. Records of the flow, chemical composition and temperature of the ground water at and near the surface, from the entire mine, from portions of the mine, and from exploration holes drilled in the mine, were kept as the mine was developed. Where possible, ground water pressures in drill holes and changes in pressure with time, were recorded. The geologic, hydrologic and chemical data were correlated. The following conclusions were drawn from the correlations: The ground water in the Henderson mine occurs in fractures in Precambrian igneous and metasedimentary rocks and in a series of Tertiary intrusive rocks. Two zones of ground water were recognized; an active zone, in which the fracture systems are recharged and discharged annually into the surface water system, and a passive zone, in which the fractures were filled with water in the geologic past. Discharge from the passive zone is through mine workings that intersect the fracture systems. Discharge from a fracture or fracture system is initially high but decreased with tire!. The rate of decrease in flow (or pressure) is exponential. By measuring the change in flow with time, it is possible to calculate the amount of flow at some given period of time in the future. Based on changes in rate of flow and pressure, and the geology, and assuming rates of mining of the ore, it will be possible to predict the volumes of water that will have to be handled during the life of the mine and the area around the mine that will be drained by the mining operation.

This paper will review thickening theory, from the ( ) of the practicing engineer, with particular emphasis on ( ) uncertainty or disagreement. It will attempt to outline broadly what we know and what we don&apos;t know. This should serve two purpose First, it will warn the process engineer where he might get into trouble. At least it will alert him to the risk involved in uncritically accepting any of the recommended design procedures. Second, it will identify for researchers some areas in which further work might be fruitful. Not too many years ago there would have been little to write on such a subject. We had been designing thickeners for decades, using the classic Coe and Clevenger procedure. As far as we were generally aware, they all turned out to be about the right size. And so if there was anything we didn&apos;t know, It certainly wasn&apos;t hurting us much. Today we know better. While it is true that in most cases units designed by the Coe and Clevenger procedure (1) will perform satisfactorily, we now know of cases in which they don&apos;t. And during the past few years there have been many developments and advances in basic thickening theory. So there is now a lot more room for disagreement, and a whole lot more to be uncertain about. What is "thickening" "Thickening" means different things to different people. For this paper we define it to mean sedimentation behavior characterized by line settling. Solids subside with a clear line of demarcation between settling solids and supernatant. Although the supernatant will usually be clear, in some cases it may be turbid. Line settling must entail that all particles just below the pulp-supernatant interface have the same subsidence rate, so that

Newmont mine geologists in Nevada are most proficient when applying technical expertise with multi-departmental teams in three main settings. The first is value creation through near-mine discovery, development and reserve conversion. Since 1986, geologists have created substantial net asset value in developing more than 1.35 kt (43 million oz) into quality Nevada surface and underground gold reserves. The second setting is value realization by supporting mine operations with ore control, selective mining, reconciliation investigations and strategic planning. The investment of technical research on reconciliation investigations led to new concepts and practices that highlighted opportunities for large revenue and reserve gains. In 2002, more than $65 million in projected revenue was added to the Gold Quarry south layback. Kriged mine polygon construction and controlled blast heave at the Lone Tree Mine provided millions of dollars in mining efficiencies. High-quality geologic advice in selective mining at the Twin Creeks Mine helped obtain $4.3 million revenue gains throughout 2002-2003.

Agapito Associates (AAI) provides consulting services in geo-engineering, mining engineering and related disciplines. Founded in 1978, the firm operates out of offices in Grand Junction, CO, Golden, CO and Lombard, IL. Members of the staff include mining, civil and geological engineers, physicists, geologists, numerical analysts, computer specialists, instrumentation specialists, plus administration and technical support personnel. AAI has provided consulting and engineering services to mining companies producing base metals, precious metals, coal, potash, trona, limestone, oil shale and salt, and to defense and nuclear-waste disposal industries. AAI also provides services for measuring in situ horizontal stresses using an advanced biaxial overcore stress downhole measurement system developed by Sigra of Australia. Since 1978, AAI has measured in situ stress in copper, oil shale, molybdenum, trona, limestone and coal mines, and in tunnels and concrete structures. Since 1994, the staff has completed 527 overcore stress determinations. AAI has the equipment and personnel for overcoring, sample coring and instrumentation installation in limited access, surface and underground mines. Portable Longyear CP-65 drills, borehole deformation gauges and strain indicators are used for difficult-access overcoring and are permissible for use in gassy mines.
