Gold was first discovered in Alabama in 1830. Before a decade had passed more than 20,000 people were employed in the various gold districts scattered across east-central Alabama. By 1849 most of the presently defined gold districts were known with such towns as Arbacoochee, Chulafinnee, Goldville, Pinetucky, and Idaho being the principal mining camps. The California gold rush of 1849 signaled the end of intensive prospecting in the Alabama Piedmont for the precious metal. Reactivation of many of the old gold districts has been attempted several times since 1849. Significant activity and development took place between 1874 and 1880, 1888 and 1916, and 1929 and 1936. Locally, some of the development met with moderate succes. The last productive gold mine in Alabama ceased production in 1935. The sharp increase in gold prices since 1973 has caused renewed interest in the potential values of gold of the Alabama gold districts. Most of the gold workings have been abandoned for nearly 75 years and are for the most part inaccessible for convential property evaluation. The early gold miners and prospectors in Alabama were more intent upon finding and mining the valuable metal than in recording their activities for future generations. No matter how interesting or historically significant these records might have been the miners kept no records and left behind them few maps as clues to their activities. Inasmuch as most of the old gold districts have been extensively mined and prospected during the past 150 years, there is very little chance of finding large deposits through conventional outcrop prospecting methods. Similarly, the present geologic knowledge of the various districts is insufficient to launch successful exploration programs looking for large blind lode deposits in new locations within the general gold bearing region.

In mid-1972 we determined that a fresh approach to coal mining research was needed for the industry as well as for Bethlehem. The reasons to us were obvious: Productivity was in the throes of a steady decline, and labor and maintenance costs were spiraling upward. Yet, despite this predicament, nowhere in the U.S. at that time was there a comprehensive and coordinated research and development plan in the offing. The Bureau of Mines had not yet been charged with such a responsibility, and industry was content to rely on machinery manufacturers for innovations. After studying our own mining practices, the state-of-the-art of mining research elsewhere, and development work by manufacturers, we presented a comprehensive research package to our management at the end of 1972. The ideas and experience of many operating and management personnel in our Corporation contributed to the formulation of the final plan as approved.

Introduction Guar gum is a natural nonionic polysaccharide. Guaran, the functional polysaccharide in guar gum is a chain of (1?4)-linked ß-D-mannopyranose units with a-D-galactopyranose units connected to the mannose backbone through (1?6) glycosidic linkages. The poly-mannose chain is randomly substituted with galactose units at a mannose-to-galactose ratio of 1.8-1.0 [1]. Cheng et al. reported that the molecular weight of natural guar gum is 1.935 • 106 [2]. Robinson et al. found that the molecular weights of five grades of commercial guar gums ranged from 4.4 • 105 to 16.5 • 105 [3]. Guar gum is frequently used as a depressant of naturally hydrophobic gangue minerals (e.g. talc) in the flotation of PGM-bearing ores, and according to Harris et al. a wide variety of modified guar gums are available for this application [4]. The Canadian potash industry utilizes natural guar gum as a blinder of water-insoluble slimes in the flotation of potash (sylvinite) ores, a process that is carried out in a saturated KCl/NaCl brine. The role of the polysaccharide is to prevent a primary amine collector from adsorbing onto these unwanted fine minerals. Hydrophobic interactions between basal cleavage planes and the polymer appear to be involved in guar gum adsorption on talc [5,6]. Liu and Laskowski stressed the importance of metal impurities on mineral surfaces that can serve as the active sites for polysaccharide adsorption [7]. This postulate was consistent with the later observation that, in addition to hydrogen bonding, the adsorption of guar gum onto talc was strongly dependent on the surface concentration of magnesium sites [8,9]. In this case the adsorption process was visualized as metal-polysaccharide complexation facilitated by the cis-configuration of the hydroxyl groups of mannose monomers. Hydrogen bonding and chemical interactions with metal sites were also suggested by Rath and Subramanian in their studies on guar gum adsorption on biotite mica [10]. In a recent study, Wang et al. demonstrated that hydrogen bonding is the main driving force behind guar gum adsorption onto talc [11]. Their data also show that the adsorption density of guar gum on alumina is about five times lower than the adsorption density on talc. Pawlik and Laskowski reported that the amount of guar gum adsorbed on illite was independent of ionic strength over a wide range of salt concentrations [12]. The adsorption density of the polysaccharide on illite did not measurably change with ionic strength from that of distilled water to about 50%-saturated KCl/NaCl potash brine (~3N KCl/NaCl). However, guar gum adsorption on dolomite dramatically decreased over the same range of ionic strengths, and no reliable explanation of that phenomenon was proposed [12]. The water structure-breaking or structure-making capabilities of background ions are usually ignored when discussing adsorption mechanisms of polymers. The concept of “structure breakers” and “structure makers” was first introduced by Gurney, and Frank and Wen who postulated that each ion is surrounded by three distinct regions of water structure [13,14]. In the first layer, water molecules are tightly bound to the ion. The second region extends farther away from the ion and is referred to as the region of structure breaking. Only at larger distances, where the ionic field is weak, water molecules form the “normal” ice-like structure. It is also now recognized that the first layer can be further divided into the primary and secondary hydration shells. Small, strongly hydrated ions reinforce the “normal” structure of water and the region of structure breaking disappears. In contrast, large less-hydrated ions disturb the ice-like structure and generate an extensive region of structure breaking. Experimentally, these two effects can readily be distinguished through viscosity measurements. Increasing concentrations of structure-breaking ions result in a decrease of the viscosity of aqueous solutions. On the other hand, increasing amounts of structure-makers significantly reduce the viscosity of water. Alkali metal cations form a sequence known as the Hofmeister series. Stemming plugs are used as an accessory in drilling and blasting industry. They supplement conventional stemming material (i.e. drill cutting) with retention of gases in the drill hole that result in better fragmentation of rock and improved explosive utilization. Better fragmentation and explosive utilization along with economic benefits enhance efficacy of the project. Incorporation of stemming plugs in drilling and blasting industry is in exercise for about thirty years. The efficiency of stemming plugs is a key factor in their rising induction in mining industry. Different studies have been conducted on the economic viability of these plugs. The focus of this paper is the selection of stemming plugs for a bench blasting operation and the examination of blasting operation efficiency based on ergonomics and human factors. Three types of stemming plugs were evaluated during multiple blasts at a limestone quarry. Their performance was evaluated using split desktop software. Based on the human factors plastic molded stemming plug (stemming plug-1) was found to be the best among all selected plugs. INTRODUCTION Surface mines and quarrying operations heavily depend on bench blasting to achieve high volumetric targets and production demands. Use of explosives is the most economic method adopted for rock breakage and movement. Extensive research had been performed to enhance explosives energy utilization. This include changing the drilling pattern, application of air decks, stemming plugs, and use of other supportive devices. Optimization of explosive energy has been a major concern in those mines that rely on drilling and blasting operation to carry out main production. Due to continually increasing cost, efficient mining demands, and associated hazards of using explosives, it is necessary to utilize explosives at their best. Efficiency of a blasting operation is generally evaluated by the fragmentation size. From post blast conditions at blasting site to efficiency of processing plant, anything can be affected due to improper blast resulting in bad fragmentation. Better fragmentation is necessity for better operation of the system along with consideration of the safety of operation, environmental issues and related costs. For developing a blast design, an engineer should always attempt to minimize the cost of operation without compromising with acceptable technical and safety necessities [1]. Blast performance is dependent on many different factors associated with the process. These factors have been gauged as blast geometry, explosive specification, and rock mass properties [2]. Similarly, in 2013 Mohammad et al. concluded that fragmentation dynamics depends on blast hole diameter, primer, spacing, stemming, burden, and delay timing for blasting operation [1]. At the work site where this study was performed, blast holes were filled by drill cuttings and muds to help in confining gases. In a blast hole, gas confinement helps in better rock fragmentation along with reduced flyrocks. This practice is most common in many countries including Pakistan. Due to lack of homogenized particle size, the effectiveness of confinement is variable and majorly based on the size of stemming. Extremely small sized drill cuttings often result in hole blow out along with flyrocks from the collar. This improper blast energy will result in poor blast, bad impacts on environment, and reduced operational efficiency. In addition to the stemming material, the length of stemming is also a prime consideration. The decrease in stemming length will increase the quantity of explosive in the blast hole and an increase in stemming material generally improves stemming performance.

The use of chemical additives in ultrafine grinding will be reviewed in this paper for the case of grinding of quartz in solutions of surfactants and inorganic electrolytes including some dispersants under different conditions of pH and ionic strength. Mechanisms are examined by correlating the grinding effects with those obtained for the influence of these chemicals on zeta potential, pulp fluidity and flocculation/dispersion characteristics. The analysis suggests grinding depends mainly on the state of aggregation of the ground products in- side the mill and the pulp fluidity. Implications of the observed effects on ultrafine grinding in general are discussed.

Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) has an extensive history with tunnel boring machines (TBM) at the Stillwater and East Boulder underground PGM mines in Montana. The most recent TBM used is for the Blitz Project, where a 5.5m (18ft) diameter main beam unit, commissioned in Q3 2012, is being utilized to drive a 6,975m (22,500 ft) ventilation and haulage level East of the Stillwater Mine for the Blitz expansion project. The assembly/commissioning of the TBM, institution of the planned diamond drilling program, application of ground control systems, and the current tunneling metrics will be covered.

In recent years there has been increasing concern in the mining industry over the availability and high cost of diesel fuel to support mining operations. Unit Rig & Equipment Co. has been deeply involved with the development and testing of the newest designs for trolley assist. Beginning in dune 1980, Unit Rig modified and commissioned six 156 metric ton (170 short ton) trolley assist haulage trucks at two mine locations in South Africa. Operating haulage trucks with General Electric GTA 15E/776 drive systems were chosen for the tests since this size of truck represented the majority of the population of large size haulage trucks and the greatest technical development problems. Test operations have proven the feasibility of equipment designs in actual operation and preliminary economic data has convinced the operators to proceed with planning to modify their entire mining operation to use trolley assist. The initial capital investment incurred for trolley assist can be recovered in a short period of time. Following this quick capital recovery, mines will continue to realize lower operating costs through increased productivity and lower diesel consumption.

Increases in the price of gold starting about five years ago, and rapid fluctuations since then, have caused a substantial popular interest in the noble metal. Gold prospecting had been at low ebb since the end of World War II in most of the United states except for a flurry of activity in Nevada occasioned by the Carlin and Cortez discoveries. The last five years, however, have seen a great awakening of interest in gold exploration as well as an opportunity for education for many explorationists in the geology and other vagueries of gold deposits. The present writers have participated over the last few years in a search for gold deposits throughout the United States. This search was greatly influenced by the geologic studies of Dr. Wm. Spence at the Haile Gold Mine in South Carolina as reported in a companion paper. Spence's studies resulted in definition of a geologic model that has proven useful in a number of other geologic environments in the united states. These programs were all carried out under the auspices of Cyprus Mines Corporation and permission by Cyprus to present these results is gratefully acknowledged. The writers, however, reserve for themselves all responsibility for the results and conclusions. The exploration program to be described began in the southeastern United States. Spence's studies provided a reasonable basis for interpreting and understanding the geology of the Haile deposit and also provided a means for predicting additional occurrences. This concept was then expanded to other gold occurrences in the Piedmont and became an effective tool for evaluating other prospects. Finally it became evident that the concept could be applied in some western gold districts. The following discussion will then include descriptions of other Piedmont examples and a few western districts that also appear to fit the pattern.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimate of the total remaining reserves of lignite in this country as of Jan. 1, 1967 was about 448 billion tons. This represents 27 percent of the total coal reserves on a tonnage basis and about 17 percent on a thermal basis. Approximately 98 percent of these reserves are in a vast lignite field located in western North Dakota and eastern Montana. This field also extends north into the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Despite these large reserves and relative ease of mining by stripping operations, lignite production historically has accounted for less than 1 percent of the national total. This is largely due to the fact that the lignite deposits are located in an area that has no large centers of population and the economical radius of transportation is limited by its relatively high moisture and low heating value. Commercial utilization of North Dakota lignite for power production became firmly established in the mid-1920's with the development of the first successful lignite-burning equipment. Most of the early lignite-fired boilers were equipped with spreader stokers, but as the size of the plants increased, pulverized-coal firing became the more popular method, and with few exceptions, the plants built during the past 15 years are pc-fired.

Several case histories from Glencore’s Sudbury Operations show how passive seismic monitoring data is used for geotechnical decision making. The data comes from three different seismic arrays monitoring two open stoping deposits, and a narrow vein cut and fill/blasthole operation. Mining depths range between 1000 to 1680m below surface. The deposits are hosted in hard igneous rocks typical of the Sudbury basin, with characteristically high horizontal stress (approximately 1.8 times the depth of overburden). Rockbursting is the main geotechnical risk, due to the strong brittle nature of the rock and local high mining extraction. Fault related seismicity includes both fault slip events, and the stress channelling effect as the mining front approaches a major fault structure. Planar data trends generally line up with known faults and often indicate early stage fault activation. The structures are risk ranked based on their seismic response. This has been particularly useful at the Nickel Rim South Mine (NRS) where the structural fabric (jointing and small-scale faulting) is generally parallel to the more through going faults. The persistence of structures is difficult to measure, and the NRS faults generally have low offsets and thin gouge. The visual difference between the more persistent structures that occasionally generate large seismic events (up Mw 2.9 to date) and localised joints/slips is often minor. The seismic monitoring data clearly shows the more active structures. This information is highlighted on mine plans to help guide enhanced ground support and seismic re-entry protocol barricade locations. Pillar loading/yielding is a key element to the blasthole operations where a primary/secondary mining sequence is used. The secondary pillars are mined in a yielded state with just-in-time development. An example of the seismic signature of a secondary stope is shown with emphasis on the need for high location accuracy given the stope widths of 12.5 to 15m. The ratio of the shear wave energy to primary wave energy (Es/Ep) has long been used as a method to estimate source mechanisms; the higher the ratio, the more likely the event is fault slip versus rock fracturing. Data sets are filtered on Es/Ep ratios to highlight both fault slip populations and stress fracturing mechanisms. Examples of seismic data quality checks, high stress development, and re-entry protocols are also shown in the case histories.

The Sage Mill Project w approved by Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corporation's Board of Directors in October 1994. The Sage Mill Project included a pressure oxidation plant designed and constructed to process refractory carbonaceous ore using fine grinding/autoclaving technology developed specifically to treat Twin Creeks ore. The project was constructed in two phases. The first phase was put into operation on May 5, 1997, just hours before the transfer of ownership to Newmont Gold Company occurred. The second phase started in October 1997. This paper reviews schedule, costs, scope changes, and methodology used on the project that spanned almost five years from project definition through commercial operation.

Coal mining activity disturbs the natural equilibrium of in situ stress state such that the induced stresses deform the surrounding rock mass. Although the installation of roof supports typically prevents rock deformation, rock mass failure may still occur in bolted roof. The erratic failure of rock mass after few days to months and years of excavation is the result of time-dependent deformation of roof rock under constant surrounding stresses. In the current research, the triaxial laboratory creep experiments proved that Marcellus shale exhibits time-dependent deformation under constant stress that was smaller than the failure strength. However, unlike conventional experimental results, the time-dependent deformation did not depend on the level of constant stress. The often-neglected initial state of specimens and intrinsic heterogeneity highly influenced the time-dependent failure of Marcellus shale.

A continuous on-line particle size analysis system for solid/liquid suspensions is described. The basic sensor utilizes a centrifugal principle to separate particles according to size, the resultant separation being measured by means of beta-ray attenuation. Results obtained when analyzing a variety of materials at sizes from 65 mesh (210 microns) to 20 microns are discussed in de- tail. Accuracies better than 2% are demonstrated. The effects of particle specific gravity, and mixtures of materials of diverse specific gravities, are discussed from a practical and theoretical viewpoint. It is demonstrated that particle specific gravity has a minimal effect on the size reading obtained. This renders the instrument suitable for handling materials where the ratio of light to heavy component may change. The design of the first commercial installation of this instrument is described in detail. This installation will be capable of analyzing three streams in sequence, measurement at three particle sizes being effected on each stream.

INTRODUCTION In the last twelve years, underground stoping methods at the Homestake Gold Mine have evolved from open cut-and-fill with jacklegs, cribbed raises and electric slushers to ramp-based mechanized cut-and-fill (MCF) and vertical crater retreat (VCR) with dieselpowered loaders, trucks and drill jumbos. The evolution was swift. Unfortunately, ventilation practices have had trouble keeping pace. Stope ventilation is still too dependent on auxiliary fans and coolers. A single large MCF stope might contain up to eight headings, each of which requires significant ventilation resources when a diesel loader is present. Air is shortcircuited all too frequently through mined-out VCR panels. These factors and the recent rapid decent of the center of mining prompted a study to improve ventilation practices and to more accurately project future requirements. BACKGROUND In 1992, the underground portion of the Homestake Gold Mine produced 8336 kg of gold from 1407 ktons of ore (268,000 oz from 1,551,000 st). The ore is hosted in low to medium grade meta-sediments. Stoping took place from 420 to 2347 m below the surface (1400 to 7700-ft levels). The weighted center of mining was 1662 m deep (5450-ft level) in 1990 and is projected to be 1890 m (6200-ft) in 1993. The deepest level is 2440 m (8000-ft) where the virgin rock temperature (VRT) is 56.1°C (133F). The mine is ventilated by 504 m3/s (1,069,000 cfm) measured at mid-exhaust-circuit density. The air-conditioning system includes an 8.1 MWR (2300 ton) controlled recirculation plant, a 2.0 MWR (580 ton) chilled water plant, a 1.0 MWR (290 ton) exploration drift refrigeration plant, 28 spot-coolers totaling 3.4 MWR (960 tons) and 35 spray coolers totaling 1.5 MWR (420 tons). The mine employs 117 diesel units with a total nameplate rating of 7961 kW (10,672 hp). These units include twenty-four 1.5m3 (2-yd) loaders, twenty-six 2.7m3 (3.5-yd) loaders, fourteen 3.8m3 (5-yd) and two 7.6m3 (10-yd) trucks, and assorted utility vehicles and drill jumbos. THE STUDY In April 1991, the University of Nevada-Reno (Mackay School of Mines) and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology cooperated with Homestake on an MCF study. Mackay instrumented a stope with thermocouples, air velocity meters and hygrometers (Duckworth, 1992). South Dakota Tech conducted a finite-elements computer analysis of a back-filled MCF stope with/without light-weight shotcrete insulation on the sidewalls and back (Chellam, 1992). Homestake conducted an empirical analysis of deep-level MCF stoping. This paper describes the Homestake study. Twenty-three of the forty MCF stopes deeper than 1800 m were surveyed at least once during the last quarter of 1992. The stopes not included were being cable-bolted or back-filled. Figure 1 shows the complexity of one of the ramp-based stoping areas included in the survey. This particular stope has six separate production headings. A baseline wallrock heat load was derived for each stope or heading from psychrometric calculations. Broken ore, waste rock fill and fissure water were noted when present and the effects included in the baseline heat load. Other heat sources often mentioned in the literature such as metabolic heat from workers, heat from explosives and small electric loads were neglected. Fan heat was considered part of the ramp & crosscut heat load and thus not included in the study. Diesel heat was addressed separately. RESULTS Survey results, plotted as the heat flux against VRT, are shown in Figure 2. The equation for the regression line is: W/m2 = 2.1236*VRT - 75.405 The 0.31 correlation coefficient is poor which implies that the results should be used cautiously. The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic in an economic and environmentally safe manner is an important problem facing the mining industry in the United States. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves: • the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), •the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, •the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, •the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), •fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and •crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Batch experiments, using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite, were performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Variables studied included mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure, and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residues were subjected to arsenic leach tests, and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests. Introduction The ability to treat a precious metal ore containing appreciable amounts of antimony and arsenic is dependent upon the characteristics of the ore. For some ores, selective flotation can be used to separate the antimony and arsenic minerals, which are then treated separately. Unfortunately, many ores are not treatable in this way, and the concentrates obtained may contain appreciable contamination (which limits the ability to make acceptable grade antimony products). If we consider the added value of the precious metals in the concentrate, then it is worthwhile to evaluate the potential for new methods to treat these types of concentrates. In addition, the environmental difficulties associated with arsenic disposal must be taken into account in any proposed process. If there is appreciable arsenic present, then it must be either recovered as a marketable product or placed in an insoluble form. The problem addressed in this research program has become increasingly important as the precious metals mining industry is encountering more ores of this type. A large deposit of this type exists in Idaho where the antimony occurs primarily as stibnite, with minor amounts of kermesite and tetrahedrite (Cooper, 1951). The gold appears in association with arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other arsenic minerals. Flotation has been used to obtain an antimony concentrate. The concentrate, however, is contaminated with appreciable amounts of arsenic and also contains precious metals. If the ore or concentrate contains appreciable amounts of base metals, then the recovery process becomes much more difficult. There are a number of other known deposits of this type in Alaska, Canada, Montana and elsewhere. The objective of this research program was to develop a fundamental understanding of the oxidation and leaching chemistry of the arsenic and antimony minerals so that technology may be developed to treat these ores in an economic and environmentally safe manner. Wendt (1949) and Koster and Royer (1940) discussed the possibilities of oxidative roasting of stibnite concentrates containing arsenic. Wendt describes a process used at a smelter in Czechoslovakia (in the 1930s) where roasting was carried out in rotary furnaces at 723° K (500° C). Most of the arsenic was removed as fume, as well as 25% of the antimony. No sulfur dioxide containment was described. The oxide fume from the furnace went to a heated caustic water leach, where the arsenic was preferentially dissolved and then precipitated with calcium chloride as calcium arsenate following solid-liquid separation. The antimony oxide was sold, and the solid oxide discharge from the rotary furnace was sent to a blast furnace where the antimony metal, containing the precious metals, was recovered. The reliable quality assessment of grouting operations is one of the key issues in establishing impermeable grout curtains around shafts, drifts and tunnels. Reliable opera¬tional information on the decrease in the permeability of rock during the grouting process facilitates the assessment of the effectiveness of the completed curtain and assures production quality. Quality control and assurance also fa¬cilitates the early detection and elimination of possible de¬fects in the grout curtain. Thorough control of the grouting process provides the capability to evaluate decreases in the permeability of water-producing fracture zones prior to the beginning or the continuation of excavation of the shaft, tunnel or drift. In order to achieve this objective, post¬grouting hydrodynamic investigations are conducted prior to the initiation or re-initiation of work on the underground workings to measure the decrease in the permeability coef¬ficient of aquifers during grouting operations. 8.1 QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL OF THE ISOLATION OF ROCK BY GROUTING THROUGH HOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Quality assurance and control are based on measuring the decrease in the permeability coefficient of water-pro¬ducing horizons as a result of injecting grout into the drill¬holes. For this purpose, the value of the acceptable residual permeability coefficient is calculated beforehand based on the acceptable value of ground water inflow into the shaft, drift or tunnel as specified by the "construction norm and integrated practice (SNIP)" (Anon., 1976). Having ob¬tained the values of aquifer thickness, permeability, and head distribution for each aquifer from flowmetric data (dis¬cussed in Chapter 3), the average value of the permeability coefficient of all aquifers intersected by the shaft is calcu¬lated as [ ] where Ki is the permeability coefficient of the "ith" aqui¬fer; Pi is the pressure of the "ith" aquifer; and M; is the thickness of the "ith" aquifer. The total expected inflow of ground water into the shaft is [ ] where RK is the radius of the contour of influence; RCFB is the radius of the shaft; and p is the coefficient of dynamic viscosity of the ground water. The necessary reduction of the coefficient of permeabil¬ity of the aquifer [ ] where Q is the expected inflow of ground water into the shaft from eq. 8.2; Q.-fin is the acceptable inflow of ground water; and a is the safety factor. By knowing the average permeability value of the rock and the permeability reduction coefficient, it is possible to determine the value of the acceptable residual permeability coefficient for all the aquifers [ ] The values of the permeability coefficient, pressure, and thickness for each aquifer are determined from the data gathered during the hydrodynamic investigations conducted in grout holes prior to beginning the grouting operations as discussed in Chapter 3. After injecting the grout into the first of the holes, the injection into each of the following grout holes is preceded by repeated hydrodynamic investi¬gations. Using the data obtained for each water-producing zone, a graph is constructed where the numbers representing the grout holes in their order of grouting are placed on the abscissa, and the values of the aquifer permeability coeffi¬cient are placed on the ordinate (Fig. 103). This curve char¬acterizes the change in permeability of the given hydro¬stratigraphic unit as grouting operations are completed, one hole at a time. The results of grouting operations are considered to be positive when each sequential observation records a steady decrease in the permeability of the aquifer. The permeabil¬ity measured prior to the injection of the grout into the last hole must be lower than or equal to the acceptable perme¬ability as determined by the application of eqs. 8.1 through 8.4. Table 8.1 presents illustrative data on the hydrogeo¬logic properties of aquifers at a mine shaft prior to the initiation of grouting operations. Data also are presented on the reduction in the permeability coefficient during the in¬jection of the grout. The shaft in question intersects eleven aquifers. Based on data concerning aquifer pressure, thick¬ness, permeability, and the expected inflow rate of water for each of the strata, the average permeability coefficient is calculated according to eq. 8.1 as K = 0.2 x 10-12 m2. Calcium oxide, with its ability to capture and store carbon dioxide, is emerging to become an important tool in carbon management. Calcium oxide can be used reversibly to capture carbon dioxide in situ and then be regenerated to produce a pure stream of carbon dioxide ready for sequestration; the Zero Emission Coal Alliance technology utilizes this property of calcium oxide to generate emissions-free electric power from coal. The reaction of calcium oxide with carbon dioxide resulting in thermodynamically stable carbonate is well understood; however, the efficiency of this reaction is limited by the diffusion of gases through bulk calcium oxide and through a layer of carbonate formed on the surface. In addition, the regeneration of calcium oxide is an endothermic reaction and is favored at high temperatures. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to address the diffusion limitation, a thin layer of calcium oxide, supported on a high surface area material, is studied thermogravimetrically to demonstrate the physical adsorption of carbon dioxide on calcium oxide. The adsorption is to take place at temperatures lower than required to form calcium carbonate.

The TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyzer (TIMA), an automated mineralogy system, enables fast and quantitative mineral analyses of rocks, ores, concentrates, tailings, leach residues or smelter products. It combines BSE and EDX analysis for identification and measurement of mineral concentrations, particle size distribution, and liberation/locking parameters. In addition, it can provide bright particle searches for PGM, gold-silver ores, and/or REE. With the newly developed Automated Loading System (AutoLoader), the TIMA has become the world?s first automated mineral analyzer which permits robust, continuous and unattended sample loading. With the AutoLoader (robotics) system, the TIMA has emerged as a powerful plant support instrument. It increases the sample throughput, minimizes manual labor and enables 24/7 operations. As such, it can be used in daily, continuous mineralogy for mine geology/ore control, concentrators, leach operations, and smelter support. It will also increase the capabilities of technical service centers for mining companies, commercial laboratories, large drilling programs or pilot test campaigns. In combination with a highly automated sample preparation lab (sizing, potting and polishing), TIMA technology can establish high-throughput and fast-turnaround automated mineralogy lab modules for mine-site production support.

The advantage of using ammonium phosphate salt as flux is the selective precipitation of chromium(III) compounds, which are considered nontoxic and environmentally friendly. The technique in this paper is determined to have potential to be applied in the metallurgical industry, where it can be used in the beneficiation of chromite mineral ores. The higher chromium contents of chromite ores often require furnaces to run at higher temperatures of above 1,300 °C, which can cause shutdown of the ore processing plant and accumulation of the sticky chrome compounds — including toxic chromium(VI) waste — which are generated as byproducts. The other advantage of this technique is its low to moderate energy consumption compared to existing techniques.

The new process consists of the selective coalescence of fine hematite particles by fine magnetite. The gangue minerals are dispersed by some dispersant; thus it can be separated by desliming. This process is particularly suitable for fine-grained hematite/magnetite-type deposits.
