The physical properties of clay-water systems depend on the complicated system of forces between the clay particles themselves, and between the clay particles and the ions in the liquid phase. The kind and distribution of ions in, on, and between the clay particles and the size and the shape of the particles are the basic factors determining the macroscopic behavior of clay-water systems. Understanding the system requires a knowledge of the nature of the clay particles, their size, structure, composition, and surface properties, and of the manner in which they interact with ions [and molecules] in the surrounding liquid [or other medium]. The validity of Professor Brindley's words (Brindley, 1958), written three decades ago in the context of making pottery, whitewares, and electrical porcelains, transcends time, and the basic message is perhaps all the more important in the considerably expanded use of ceramics for structural, thermal, tribological, electronic, and other applications. Silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and sialons have been studied in the last two decades for high- temperature structural and tribological applications, particularly for using in internal combustion engines. Titanates, zirconates and niobates of barium, strontium and lead, have high dielectric constants, and are extensively used in the formulations for making capacitors. Hexagonal ferrites (molecular formula MO.6Fe2O3) are in use for making permanent magnets for fabricating miniature motors, and for assembling loud speakers, particle accelerators etc. Cubic ferrites such as magnesium-zinc ferrite and nickel-zinc ferrite are used as transformer cores, and for other high-frequency applications. In this context, Richerson's recent book (Richerson, 1984) on the general scope of traditional and technical ceramics is a good starting point for an overview of contemporary ceramics technology. Glasses are a whole class of amorphous materials used widely as sintering aids, and for making glass-bonded ceramics and glass-ceramic composites. Composites are yet another burgeoning field where two or more particulate components are used for improving the performance of ceramics. For all these applications, the inorganic starting materials are almost always submicron and near-micron powders. Understanding the powders' physicochemical properties, and their surface chemical interactions with the surrounding liquid/gaseous medium is-necessary for making reliable ceramic parts at competitive prices. Even though ceramics science and engineering has attained its separate identity in universities and the industry, ceramists themselves would concede that ceramics science is a cross-disciplinary field, having incorporated and assimilated within itself many principles from several apparently disjointed disciplines. Principles of material science, graduate-level physics and chemistry, polymer science, surface and colloid chemistry, transport phenomena, particle technology, unit operations commonly used in chemical engineering and mineral processing, and statistics and applied mathematics are integral part of any ceramics curriculum in universities. Added to this is the fact that all bench-scale successes in making ceramic parts are to be scaled-up for larger throughput operations. Understanding and applying process engineering principles of comminution, classification, drying, calcination, etc. then becomes essential. CERAMIC FORMING: Despite the diversity of the materials and processes, conceptually, the steps involved in making ceramic parts have remained the same over several decades: The different components for making the pan (usually one or more powders plus other forming and sintering additives) are proportioned and mixed thoroughly, and the well-mixed formulations are consolidated into desirable shapes known as "green bodies." Usually binders such as wax, clay, organic polymers and surfactants, whether dispersed or dissolved in a suitable liquid are used during mixing the batch for giving strength for the green bodies. In the dried green state, the inorganic powders typically occupy only 55 to 60% of the bulk volume of the body, depending on the particle size distributions of the powders and the forming history, with mostly inter- particle voids accounting for the rest of the void volume. SINTERING: The formed bodies are then fired in high- temperatures kilns/furnaces during which the parts are exposed to a predetermined temperature profile, and "soaked" for a certain duration at the final high temperatures, typically between 1200 K and 1900 K, and then cooled to room temperature. The gaseous atmosphere in the furnace is controlled (oxidizing, reducing, or inert) when necessary. During the initial stages of firing, volatile liquids evaporate, and during the intermediate temperatures between 400 and 600 K, the the organic polymeric additives pyrolize and oxidize into water vapor, CO, C02, and other gases. Arch of Illinois is a mining complex comprised of two surface and two underground mines located in Perry County, in southern Illinois. The company a division of Apogee Coal Co. of St. Louis, MO. Arch of Illinois' two surface mines, the Captain and Horse Creek Mines, use large stripping shovels and cross-pit bucketwheel excavators to remove overburden from three seams of coal, the Herrin No. 6, Harrisburg No. 5 and Danville No. 7. All are considered high sulfur reserves. The two underground operations are managed by Arch of Illinois. They are the Kathleen Mine and the newly constructed Conant Mine, which began production in 1991. Both underground mines are continuous miner operations. They mine the No. 6 coal, which is about 1.8 m to 2.1 m (6 to 7 ft) thick. All coal is currently transported by truck to a central preparation plant located at the Captain Mine. This preparation plant produces 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd) of clean coal. Production in 1992 reached 5.9 Mt (6.5 million st) of saleable coal. Of that, about 66% or 4 Mt (4.4 million st) are produced by the surface mines and the rest the by under ground operations. Change is in the wind for Arch of Illinois. In 1988, 100% of all production (6.2 Mt or 6.9 million st) came from surface operations. By 1995, only 38% of production is scheduled from surface mines. And by the year 2000, 100% of production will from underground mining methods. Dwindling low ratio reserves, compounded by increasing environmental and land acquisition costs, coupled with more efficient underground mining equipment, have started an evolutionary trend toward development of underground reserves. For Arch of Illinois to maintain profitability of remaining surface reserves and to compete effectively mining underground, it must improve efficiency, productivity and cost reductions. These efforts are essential for maximizing current surface reserves and to ensure a continued existence in the presence of clean air legislation and the softening of the high sulfur coal market.

Long extensible conveyor systems are an important option for efficient tunnel excavation where intermediate access is impractical. The conveyor system designed for the Pula Subbaiah Veligonda Tunnel #2 in Andhra Pradesh, India will eventually extend to 19.35km. The Ø10.0m water diversion tunnel will be excavated under India?s largest tiger sanctuary using a Robbins Double Shield TBM. Once extended, the conveyor will be one of the longest single-flight systems ever installed in India, and is expected to offer increased system availability over comparable systems using muck cars. This paper will examine the engineering challenges of long-flight extensible conveyor systems in the areas of belt selection, component design, and equipment location in confined assembly and launch areas

The Fabrica Mine of the Brazilian iron ore company Ferteco mines on an extremely inhomogenous ore deposit. A large amount of the crude ore consists of fines minus 100 micron which cannot be sold without further treatment because of its chemical and physical properties. In order to make full use of the mined crude ore an expansion program has been realized which incorporates among others a concentrator to produce classified blast furnace ore , sinter feed and pellet feed. The pellet feed is converted in a 2.5 million tons per year Lurgi Dravo plant into high grade pellets. The paper discusses the selection of the concentration process, the pelletizing process and describes the experiences with the operation plant during the startup and the first years of operation.

The Bureau of Mines investigated rapid bubble-pulp separation to improve flotation kinetics. A shallow-depth froth separator was employed to quickly recover the mineral-laden bubbles from a mixture of ore, water, and air bubbles. The shallow depth minimized the rising distance required to recover even the smallest size bubbles (100 ~m). Therefore, the slurry remained in the unit only long enough to recover the bubbles before the pulp exited through the conical bottom. Joining this unit with a rapid bubble-particle attachment unit, a rapid flotation system was formed that floated silica from phosphate in one-fifth of the retention time for conventional mechanical cells. The hydrodynamics of the rapid flotation system along with fundamental parameters for scale-up are presented in this paper.

The brecciated dolostone-hosted (Mississippi Valley-type) and associated shale-hosted stratiform Pb-Zn deposits at McArthur River occur adjacent to a major syndepositional fault, the Emu fault. Base-metal zoning, mineral parageneses, and Pb and stable isotope ratios indicate that both types of deposits formed contemporaneously from metalliferous brines that flowed into the host sediments from the Emu fault. Derivation of brines from underlying evaporitic sediments is suggested. Geochemical evidence indicates that the mechanism of ore formation was sulfate-reduction coupled with oxidation of organic matter. The textural relationships of stratiform sulfide mineralization to diagenetic dolomite concretions, chert blebs, volcanic glass shards, and inter-ore breccia beds, indicate that the reactions proceeded diagenetically within about 100 m of the sediment/water interface.

The adsorption of oleate at the surface of titanium dioxide from aqueous solutions was examined by Fourier transform infrared (FT -IR.) spectroscopy using a germanium internal reflection element coated with a thin film of TiO2. This thin film, with a thickness of 100-200 A, was deposited on the surface of a germanium single crystal by RFIDC magnetron reactive sputtering. It was found that significant adsorption of oleate from a 0.02-0.03 mM aqueous solution on the surface of TiO2 thin film occurs at neutral pH, from about pH=5.5 to pH=7.7. Adsorption of oleate at the surface of the amorphous TiO2 thin film appeared to be reversible, involving soap-acid dimers.

To aid our sales people in recommending to glass plant purchasing agents which of several possible feldspathic materials is the best value at any of about 100 glass plants and to give guidance on the amount of value difference. 3. To help in locating plant sites for three blending or pre-mixing stations to serve the foundry industry at minimum cost and with maximum tonnage and maximum profitability.

The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerks-dorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7,988 acres or 12.5 square miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26 feet diameter down-cast shaft and a 22 feet diameter up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month.

A recent study by the National Academy of Engineering concluded that if the U.S. Coal Industry is to double production by 1985 it must open 30 new 2,000,000 tons per year surface mines in the eastern states and 100 new 5,000,000 tons per year surface mines in the western states, in addition to major growth in underground mining. Major expansions in coal mining are also planned in other countries. Engineering geology can play an important part in coal mine development, operation and abandonment (Table I), and with the increasing scale of surface coal mining and the requirements of environmental legislation, it seems certain that engineering geology and geotechnics will play a growing role in surface coal mining.

Test of trolley-diesel prime power is another step in the search to exploit the unused potential of electric wheel driven haulage trucks. The output of the present engine - a 700 horsepower diesel - is not adequate to exploit fully the 1200 horsepower potential of the two electric wheel drive motors. Power was supplied to a modified 100-ton haulage truck through a double wire trolley system. The vehicle was tested with various payloads on a 7% adverse grade haul road. More significant conclusions developed are: Power - Horsepower to propel the vehicle can he more than doubled to improve truck cycle time. Productivity - Trolley power up adverse grades can improve [producivity] rates from 18 to 36%, dependent upon haul road profile.

During the next five years, there will be a trend toward performing belt cleaner maintenance while the conveyor is in operation. Most mines and industrial sites that use belt conveyors have an in-house safety rule that the belt must be stopped before maintenance work can be performed on any belt-cleaning device. This is a good rule. Most cleaning devices are positioned against the belt with hardware that requires the service technician to reach or climb into the chute to change the cleaning blades. But this simple rule becomes more complicated as production demands require higher conveyor availability and provide fewer conveyor outages. In many cases, today’s conveyors are expected to be available 98% to100% of the time.

On January 5, 2012, the Mine Safety and Health Administration ordered the closure of the Silver Shaft, the primary underground access to Hecla?s Lucky Friday Mine, for removal of built up backfill material that accumulated over time on the shaft walls and furnishings. Lucky Friday and Cementation USA personnel worked quickly to identify the most effective means to get the mine back into production. The team developed a fast-track procurement and refurbishment plan utilizing shaft sinking winches, headframe modifications, a partial shaft sinking Galloway, and modified cages to not only complete clean-off of buildup, but also replace pipe brackets, shaft steel, and power and communications cables as needed in the 1,860 m (6,100 ft) deep shaft within 14 months.

The Egnatia Odos (Odos meaning road) is one of Greece’s largest ever highway construction projects and one of Europe’s most important. The Highway will assist in the connection of the Greek Ionian/Adriatic Coast with Turkey and the Black Sea reviving an historic Roman alignment “Via Egnatia” connecting Rome to Constantinople (now Istanbul). There are 74 twin tunnels (60 bored and 14 cut-and-cover) with lengths ranging from 160 m (175 yd) to 4,600 m (5,031 yd) and 100 m (109 yd) to 270 m (295 yd),respectively. The complex geology and resulting physical geography have had a major influence on both the design and construction of these tunnels. This paper describes the management, design and construction challenges of these numerous tunnels.

The White Cliffs diatomite deposit occurs in a lacustrine facies of the Quiburis Formation, an Upper Miocene to Pliocene basin-fill sediment of the lower San Pedro Valley. On-going geo-logic mapping has defined an 2.5-3.0 m (8-10 ft) thick ore zone near the mill site, several marker beds, a NNW-trending high-angle normal fault, and a NW-trending syncline. The diatomite has an average loose-weight dry bulk density of 130 kg/m3 (8 lbs/ft3) and is presently marketed outside Arizona for asphalt filler. Current development is projected to yield 3500 mt (4000 st) of finished product, with an estimated 91,000 mt (100,000 st) of finished product obtain-able from several other nearby sites.

The deployment of large machinery for low cost, bulk surface mine production operations has resulted in high-impact shovel loading operations (HISLO). In extreme cases, shovels load large dump trucks with 100-ton (or more) passes generating high-impact forces under gravity. HISLO generates high-frequency shockwaves that cause severe truck vibrations exposing operators to whole body vibrations (WBV). Current research study in this area has established that the vibration levels affecting the operator?s seat, lower-back, lumbar and cervical regions fall within the extremely uncomfortable zone compared to the ISO 2631 comfort zone. These results pose health threats to truck operators over long-term exposure to these vibrations. In this paper, the authors will examine engineered solutions to mitigate these health threats.

Spiral concentration has gained a great deal of popularity as a cheap, effective method for recovering fine coal (8x100 mesh). Typically, 6-turn, wide-profile spirals are used in either a single pass, open- circuit configuration or in combination with a middlings retreat circuit. Recent work conducted at Carpco, however, has indicated that a split feed scenario and/or hydraulic classification in advance of spiral concentration offers significant advantages in both capacity and metallurgical performance. In addition, it has also been shown that the apparent density separation which naturally occurs in a hydraulic classifier provides significant up-grading in terms of pyrite and ash rejection. The results from this study will be presented in comparison with those obtained from open-circuit spiral testing.

Concentrate flow rates were measured for the flotation of -100-mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer-controlled 0.076 x 3.5-m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height, airflow and solid feed rates. The specific projected surface areas of the feed, concentrate and tailing streams were determined from the measured particle size distributions. The results obtained show that the concen¬trate flow rate was independent of recovery zone height but was dependent on the hydrostatic pressure setting (measure of froth depth), gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of bubble surface area flux and the specific particle projected surface area.

This project is exploring the potential for developing trees tolerable to degraded un-reclaimed mine site soils and tailings as a solution to re-establishing long-term tree growth on those sites. The project incorporates growing tree seedlings in an underground greenhouse grown from seeds planted in the degraded mine soils in which they will eventually be planted. The outcome of the project is expected to lead to a successful solution for re-establishing tree growth in soils and tailings containing high metal concentrations with minimal post-planting human intervention. The research is being conducted in an underground greenhouse located 100 ft below the surface in the old Orphan Boy Mine Underground Mine Education Center (UMEC) located on Montana Tech’s campus in Butte, Montana.

"A field study of the coal preparation plant fleet in the eastern United States was undertaken to determine if quantify of rare earth elements (REEs) present in the product streams are large enough to justify further concentration. Representative composite samples were taken from the clean product, coarse refuse, and fine refuse streams from 20 coal preparation plants. Each stream was then separated into various size and density classes and analyzed for ash and REE contents. The large database showed that coarse refuse contained the largest amount of REEs, although the ratio of heavy to light REEs was greater for the clean coal products. The concentration of REEs was also compared to that typically seen in the earth’s crust. This enrichment ratio ranged from approximately 1.5 to more than 4.0 as the ash content varied. The database also showed that a linear correlation existed between La and Ce for many REEs of interest, although there were several notable exceptions for some of the high-value REEs. INTRODUCTION Worldwide energy demand is expected to grow by as much as 37% by 2040 according to the International Energy Agency (2014). This growth, coupled with a decrease of the reliance on coal to generate energy, means that it is more important than ever for countries to secure the materials necessary to meet its energy projections. For the United States, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) predicts that total domestic electricity use will increase roughly 25%, from 3,836x109 kWh in 2013 to 4,797x109 kWh in 2040 (EIA, 2015). In the EIA’s reference case, coal’s contribution to electricity generation drops from 39% in 2013 to 34% in 2040. On the other hand, renewables share of electricity generation grows from 13% to 18% for the reference case. Compared to its current state, renewable energy electricity production is predicted to grow as little as 50% to as much as 121% over this time period, depending on the economic case being examined. This growth will largely be seen in the wind and solar sectors (EIA, 2015). The focus on viable renewable energy resources will be crucial to the future of fueling American growth. Many of the renewable energy technologies, such as wind turbines and photovoltaic films, rely on materials and supply chains outside of the United States. The lack of a reliable and low-cost domestic supply could pose a threat to the growth of the renewable energy markets in the United States. This potential vulnerability recently led the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to create a Critical Materials Strategy Report. In this report, 15 elements were identified as critical for the continued growth of the renewable energy market. Eight of these elements were rare earth elements (REEs). Five REEs (dysprosium, neodymium, terbium, yttrium and europium) were identified as highly critical and vulnerable to shortages (Bauer et al., 2012)."
