Florida phosphates ore typically processed by reverse flotation with an intermediate acid-scrubbing step. A single-reagent flotation process, using fatty acids or amines as the collector, would eliminate the intermediate scrubbing step plus an additional flotation step. This would not only simplify the process flowsheet but would also result in reduced reagent costs. The potential of single-reagent flotation of Florida phosphates using fatty acids as the collector is examined in this study. Introduction The beneficiation scheme now used for Florida phosphates involves the following three steps (Smith, 1976: Lawyer et al.. 1978, 1984: Moudgil et al, 1976, 1979, 1986, 1987): •rougher flotation of fluorapatitc particles using a fatty acid-fuel oil mixture as the collector. •scrubbing of fatty acid, and •cleaner flotation of silica particles using amine collector. Several attempts have been made to simplify the process flowsheet by floating either apatite or silica (not both, as is the current practice). However, single-reagent flotation schemes have had limitations in meting the concentrate-grade requirements of the phosphoric acid plants. In this study, an attempt was made to use a minimal amount of the fatty acid-fuel oil collector to obtain an acceptable grade (rougher) concentrate. Invariably, the recovery in such cases is expected to be lower than in the conventional rougher-flotation step. Therefore, scavenger flotation of tailings with additional fatty-acid collector was conducted to improve the phosphate recoveries.

Acid ferric sulfate solution has been used for heap and dump leaching of low-grade chalcopyrite ores and is being considered as a possible lixiviant for the hydrometallurgical processing of copper sulfide concentrates. For many years, researchers have attempted to explain the leaching behavior of chalcopyrite, since the reaction rate kinetics are extremely slow and seem to be significantly influenced by the nature of the reaction product. A summary of conclusions drawn from reported literature on chalcopyrite leaching is found in the paper by Munoz, Miller, and Wadsworth(1) and more recently by Dutrizac.(2) Lowe(3) and Jones and Peters (4) attributed rate control to a surface reaction. Linge,(5) Dutrizac,(6) Bauer,(7) and researchers at the University of Utah(1,8) reported that the reaction rate is limited by transport in the chalcopyrite lattice or through the elemental sulfur reaction product layer. Munoz et al.(1) presented a model, derived from the Wagner theory of oxidation, which is based on the formation of a protective sulfur layer with rate control by electron transport through the insulating sulfur layer. Two of the largest industries in northern Michigan, pulp and paper manufacturing and iron mining, formed a mutually beneficial partnership and collaborative research program to utilize paper mill residuals for waste rock stockpile reclamation. Historically, the majority of the paper industry’s residuals have been disposed of in landfills. The beneficial use of paper mill residuals for mine reclamation provides an environmentally sound recycling solution for the solids generated at northern Michigan paper mills and eliminates the need to strip additional overburden (glacial till) for final mine reclamation. Residuals offer a cost-effective source of organics and nutrients necessary for successful reclamation and waste rock stockpiles offer an economical and environmentally sound solution for disposal of residuals. The goal is to successfully pioneer technical development of paper mill residuals to accomplish vegetation of steep waste rock stockpile slopes and benches to establish a self-sustaining plant community that meets final reclamation requirements. Of the various types of iron mining wastes, rock stockpiles pose the greatest reclamation challenge. Success depends on incorporating sufficient organic matter into the rock stockpiles to produce a growth medium that can sustain vegetation without the need of overburden. This is an ongoing research program that is evolutionary in nature with numerous field trials, greenhouse studies, data collection and monitoring over multiple growing seasons. The program is a combination of innovative ideas and accepted reclamation practices that is proving to be a beneficial and economic approach to paper mill residual management and mine reclamation that will eventually lead from research to standardized reclamation procedures.

In a high risk venture such as mining where capital is committed and contracts are signed on the minimum of information, decisions are based primarily on production forecasts derived through consideration of such factors as management-labor relations, mining practice, variations in physical conditions and the equipment applied. Among these factors, the physical conditions offer the least opportunity for control and, due to the wide range of mining conditions that may be experienced, little effort has been made to develop objective methods for measuring their effects on mine out- put. Evidence has accumulated indicating that cultural change toward safer workplace behaviors is beginning to occur systematically in the coal industry. Through a range of programmatic mining company successes, enforcement and litigative actions, economic responses to competition, and integrated efforts by federal and state agencies, a broader participation of safety and training professionals is being achieved to address prioritized workplace problems at mines. Small steps in workplace-related improvements have been realized already, but the trends in industry safety statistics, coupled with focused programmatic initiatives, indicate that more definitive and systematic steps are occurring to improve safe behavior in the workplace routinely.

"Since the year 2000, 59 miners have lost their lives to explosions occurring in underground coal mines in the US. More accurately, those explosions were methane ignitions that propagated through the mines due to coal dust involvement; despite current explosion prevention standards. There are 4 basic strategies employed to manage the risk of coal dust explosions in many other coal mining countries around the world: removal of the coal dust, wetting of the coal dust to prevent it from becoming airborne, mixing of the coal dust with stone dust to increase the total incombustible content, and explosion activated barriers which make the entire roadway inert. However, American standards only mandate the first 3 of these 4 methods. It is possible that US coal mine safety measures could benefit from the implementation of the 4th method, the use of explosion barriers. This paper will discuss differences/similarities in barrier regulations used in other countries, as well as some potential difficulties with adapting a stone dust bag barrier system to US underground coal mines. Also, details and feedback gathered from two operating mine site trial barrier installations will be shared.INTRODUCTION Since the year 2000, 59 miners have lost their lives to explosions occurring in underground coal mines in the United States (US); 29 miners were killed at the Upper Big Branch mine in 2010, 5 at the Darby Mine No. 1 in 2006, 12 at the Sago Mine also in 2006, and 13 at the Jim Walter No. 5 Mine in 2001.[14] To be more accurate, the explosions that killed those miners were methane ignitions that propagated through the mines due to coal dust involvement.[18, 19, 20, 21] These deaths occurred despite current explosion prevention strategies, standards, and regulatory oversight. This poses the question, can more be done in the US to prevent coal dust explosions and their widespread damage. In review of current practices and regulations from several large coal mining countries, a disparity in prevention strategies arose. The main difference between the US and other countries was that the US does not encourage, mandate, or regulate the use of explosion barrier systems as an additional coal dust explosion mitigation measure. This raised many questions. First and foremost was whether or not the US coal mining industry and its miners could benefit, in terms of safety and fatality prevention, from the implementation of the explosion barrier systems that are used in other countries. Furthermore, are there significant differences between the coal mines in countries where explosion barriers are used and US coal mines, which would preclude the system from being adapted and implemented in the US? Also, what are the similarities and differences in explosion barrier systems, use, and regulations between other countries that use them?"

Union Carbide_ began looking seriously at heap leaching in 1971. At that time some 1.6 million tons of mineral averaging 0.040% U308 were stockpiled at various sites around the Gas Hills, Wyoming, uranium facility. Several alternatives for economically exploiting these reserves were considered and heap leaching seemed the most attractive. At the time, Western Nuclear Inc. was operating a heap leach project nearby in which the low-grade ore was leached with sulfuric acid, the product liquor treated in an on-site solvent extraction circuit, and the stripped product liquor re-acidified and recycled. They were most generous in allowing us to visit their site, answering our questions, and were helpful in discussing the problems associated with heap leaching. They confirmed our belief that, it was possible to operate a heap leach profitably on material too low grade for. conventional milling. Based largely on what we had learned from Western Nuclear's experience, a program was set up involving a laboratory study to determine the characteristics of the mineral stockpiles as related to heap leaching and to conduct a pilot heap leach adjoining our Gas Hills mill. Basically, the pilot heap construction and leach procedure were similar to those described in the literature(1,2) with certain modifications to permit detailed monitoring of the operation. In May, '1972, the decision was made to construct a test heap. The UCC plant at Gas Hills, Wyoming was selected as the most appropriate site for the follow¬ing reasons:

Tracer gases have been utilized successfully in a variety of industries, each with specific releasing and sampling methods. The various attributes of tracer gases are dependent on the industry the tracers are utilized in. Tracers must be chemically and thermally stable, safe, odorless, detectable at low concentrations, have a low background concentration, and should not be naturally occurring in the environment if they are utilized in underground mining applications (Thimons et al., 1974). In addition, the tracer gas should be inexpensive, non-corrosive, non-toxic, easily transportable, readily attainable, and non-radioactive (Kennedy et al., 1987). Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) met many of these above requirements and therefore was introduced as an ideal tracer gas to use in mining industry in the early 1970?s (Thimons et al., 1974). Due to the nature of underground mining including complicated geometry, irregular flows, turbulent flows, obstructed airways, and leakages it is difficult to use conventional anemometer and smoke tube techniques to accurately measure the effectiveness of ventilation controls (Thimons et al., 1974; Klinowski and Kennedy, 1991). There have been several applications of SF6 as a tracer gas in underground metal/non-metal and coal mines. Thimons et al. conducted early testing of SF6 in an underground limestone mine and determined that it is an effective technique for evaluating auxiliary fans, estimating volumetric flow rates in large areas, and measuring low flow velocities. A rapid face ventilation measurement method (FVM) utilizing SF6 was developed by the Bureau of Mines to make face measurements in underground coal mines (Timko and Thimons, 1982). When measuring the effectiveness of jet fans in dead headings SF6 was proven more effective than smoke tubes (Timko and Thimons, 1982). Experiments related to determining methane liberation in the gob were also conducted by injecting SF6 into a borehole (Timko and Thimons, 1982). Also, in an emergency situation where the gob had to be sealed due to a fire, SF6 was released to determine the effectiveness of the seals (Timko and Thimons, 1982).

Coupled influence of sulphidizers and xanthates on the electrokinetic property and flotation behavior of malachite was systematically examined via electrophoretic mobility measurements and microflotation tests. The electrophoretic mobility results for the malachite before and after surface modification with different types (Na2S and (NH4)2S) and amounts (1×10-7?1×10-4 moles/g) of sulphidizers, showed that the isoelectric points (IEP) of malachite differed at the low dosage level depending on the type of the sulphidizer, which ranged between 5 and 9.5. However, the IEP values were observed to be shifted from high to low pH values with increasing amount of sulphidizers and finally ranged between 3 and 4, indicating that the sulphidizers played a different role on changing the surface property of malachite. In order to further understand the effect of sulphidizers on the electrokinetic property and flotation behavior of malachite in a sulphidizer+xanthate system, flotation tests were carried out with malachite sulphidized with Na2S and (NH4)2S (adsorptive amount=8×10-5 moles/g) at different bulk xanthate concentrations. The results showed that the flotability of (NH4)2S-treated malachite was greater than Na2S-treated one over the entire xanthate concentration investigated, indicating that the type of sulphidizers played important role in malachite flotation; however, no obvious correlation between electrokinetic property and flotability of malachite was observed.

With the current emphasis on ecology, safety, and conservation of natural resources, some consideration should be given to methods of mining that reduce surface damage, make the mining of coal less hazardous, and allow exploitation of a larger percentage of the coal in situ. One method that can be helpful toward attaining these objectives is the use of packing or stowing. Stowing involves the replacement of the ore that has been removed by waste material obtained from within the mine or elsewhere. Evidently, it would be most beneficial if this waste for packing were available from the mine being worked, but generally this is not possible. If complete stowing is adopted, it is necessary to bring in packing material from other sources. Stowing tends to reduce surface subsidence, but not eliminate it. It enhances roof support and curtails accumulation of methane in the gob, making the mining operations safer. It may also allow one to obtain a larger amount of coal. Currently, in the United States, a substantial amount of coal is left in place as pillars, in the hope that it will support the overburden indefinitely. Some of these could be extracted with stowing. The mining of thick, steep, or contiguous seams would also be facilitated.

Epigenetic ore deposits in Nevada and Utah occur in clusters or belts in a variety of tectonic settings. Many are concentrated in the western half of Nevada in a region containing numerous, relatively large intrusive bodies. Throughout Nevada and Utah, they tend to be clustered in elongate zones or belts. Some of these belts are well defined by the distribution of mineral deposits, patterns of igneous rocks, alinements of faults, and aeromagnetic anomalies, whereas others are equivocal. The Pioche belt in eastern Nevada and western Utah, the Eureka belt in central Nevada, and the Manhattan belt in western Nevada exemplify the general characteristics of these belts, the close relation of some belts to geologic structure, and the lack of a clear correspondence in other belts. Some of these belts are characterized by alined or en echelon faults that disrupt the north-trending Basin ranges, by belts of Cretaceous and Tertiary granitoid and porphyry intrusive rocks near which the ore deposits occur, and by alined magnetic anomalies generally related to the Cretaceous and Tertiary intrusive rocks. All the mineral belts have produced precious and base metals and tungsten; the Manhattan belt in addition has produced magnesite and brucite; and the Pioche belt, uranium, fluorspar, and alunite. The belts in Nevada and Utah may be related to a variety of factors, such as zones of structural weakness in Precambrian rocks, transverse zones of lateral faulting, localized areas of igneous activity, or a combination of these and other factors. Specific types of ore deposits in Nevada and Utah seem related compositionally to the intrusive bodies with which they are associated. Iron deposits, for example, are associated with mafic intrusive rocks such as diorite or gabbro, whereas copper deposits generally and tungsten deposits almost exclusively are associated with granitic intrusive rocks such as quartz monzonltc and granodiorite.

Fly ash is a by-product generated by the combustion of coal in thermal power plants. Its disposal is a major environmental concern for these power plants. Though a considerable part of fly ash is used in cement making and brick manufacturing, a substantial quantity remains unutilized. Bentonite is commonly used as binder in the micropelletization of process waste to attain the mechanical strength required for handling and transportation. The present paper deals with the partial replacement of bentonite with fly ash in the micropelletization process without affecting the quality of the micropellets. The mechanisms of both the binders are discussed. The bonding of particles by bentonite is a physical mechanism, while fly-ash bonding is a chemical mechanism. Silica and alumina are the major constituents present in fly ash along with lime. In the presence of water, the alumino-silicates and unhydrated lime present in fly ash undergo a pozzolanic reaction and form cementitious bonds, which hold the particles together. Use of fly ash as alternative binder for bentonite has cost benefits besides providing a better utilization option for fly ash.

Dust collectors for roof bolting machines generally use a dry box to collect the roof bolting material. Recently, an underground mining operation converted a dry box dust collector to a wet box dust collector with a unique exception from MSHA for testing purposes.Water is routed to the roof bolter fromthe main water line of the continuous miner. The wet box utilizes a water spray to wet the incoming material. Testing was conducted comparing the two different collector types. Respirable dust concentrations surrounding the roof bolter with the different collection boxes were similar. The main difference in respirable dust concentrations occurred when cleaning the dust boxes. The average respirable dust concentration during cleaning of the wet box was 0.475 mg/ m3, and during the cleaning of the dry box, the average respirable dust concentration was 1.188 mg/m3, a 60% reduction in respirable dust concentration. The quartz content of the roofmaterialwas high, ranging from 28.9 to 52.7%during this study. The results from this study indicate that using the wet box as a collector reduced exposure to respirable dust up to 60% when cleaning the collector boxes.

Idler engineering, operation, and maintenance cannot be covered in depth in a short paper. Therefore, this will be a general look into the subject matter in light or the present-day technology. Depending on the source or reference used, belts for handling bulk material underground came into being between 1900 and 1920, while strip mining appeared in the thirties. The conveyor belt speeds in that era were in the 300 rpm to 500 rpm range. Belt speeds or 600-700 rpm were in vogue in the thirties, and the early sixties saw speeds or 800-900 rpm. Today, speeds or 1000 rpm are not looked at with dismay; in fact, speeds or 2000 rpm are being discussed. Among the driving forces moving the bulk materials handling industry to these greater heights have been the mining operators and engineers. Their appetite to increase output, yield, and reduced per-ton costs has constantly challenged the bulk material handling industry to develop products capable or handling these increased capacities. One or the products affected by this movement is the idler. Apart from the conveyor belt itself, it is one or the most significant parts or a conveyor system because or the sheer numbers needed in an installation.

Processing of various ores and materials in a reducing atmosphere has been done for many years. However, the typical device currently used is a large, often high maintenance, expensive piece of equipment; the rotary kiln. While it is a very reliable and a proven technology, the rotary kiln also has its limitations. It is limited by its ability to process very fine materials without creating a huge dust loss to the air pollution control equipment. This leads us towards the development of an alternate technology; the Gas Suspension System. Gas suspension preheating of various materials has been in commercial use since the early 1950's, but recently has been expanded to include Gas Suspension Reduction. Laboratory experience has proven successful on several materials; Nickel Laterite Fines, Iron Ore Fines, Fluorspar, and Clays. The gas suspension reduction system has many advantages over the conventional reduction kiln when processing fines. They are; lower cost, more fuel efficient, able to process fines, less real estate required, etc.

He said, after listing the seven plagues our industry is suffering, "none of these items I have listed is a sales or marketing problem. Further, none is a problem that can be relegated to long-term study by public or private research agencies. The Thor lake deposit is a world class resource of rare earth (REE) metals and minerals in Canada. Development work to optimize a REE mineral recovery process flow sheet is underway, however, given the ore mineralogy; the developed reagent scheme is relatively complex. As part of a research project, micro flotation tests were conducted on a feed sample in order to examine factors affecting stream partitioning. SEM-EDX was performed to evaluate variability in grain composition between streams (concentrate and tails) and TOF-SIMS surface analysis was used to determine statistically significant differences in surface species particularly related to potential activation (or depression) of the examined mineral phases. SEM-EDX analysis reveal that the concentrate has a significantly higher proportion of REE bearing grains (carbonates and phosphates) relative to the tail (almost none were identified). Spectral fingerprinting by TOF-SIMS has allowed for the identification of all reagent species investigated. Reagent signal intensity discrimination on test stream mineral surfaces was observed by the TOF-SIMS analysis using reagents at plant concentration levels. TOF-SIMS analysis confirmed that REE bearing grains reporting to the concentrate are doing so in response to collector attachment whereas grains reporting to the tail are doing so in response to a lack of collector and/or in combination with the presence of the depressant. The surface analysis of gangue phases reveal a similar reagent discrimination; the signal intensity of collector species was significantly higher on the concentrate samples relative to the tails while depressant species were significantly enriched on the surface of the gangue phases in the tail samples. A detailed evaluation of the surface species representing the various reagents used in flotation scheme revealed a distinct competitive relationship between two of the reagents. The surface analysis identified that when used in concurrently, there appears to be a negative feedback resulting in a significant reduction in loading for several of the collectors on grains reporting to the concentrate. In 1969, the OECD conducted a survey internationally to determine the status and needs for research and development in the field of tunneling. The findings also have some validity for underground excavation in general and for underground mining per se. Of the 17 countries responding to the survey, the U.S. leads in the level of support: $21.8 million and 720 man-years of effort over the last ten-year period. The total volume of R/D for the 17 countries was estimated to be $86 million and 5800 man-years. Performance of research was primarily by government agencies and public utilities (70%); the balance was conducted by private organizations and universities (15% each). In the categories of R/D subjects surveyed, three--Wk mechanics, soil mechanics, and geological exploration--outstripped all the rest in priority of effort to date. Ground support, equipment development, excavation, and environmental control received intermediate attention. The subject areas in which the least R/D effort has been expended are materials handling and systems evaluation. For the future, those R/D areas rated the most crucial to achieve technological progress in tunneling were excavation, ground support, and materials handling. The survey findings of tunneling activity indicated (1) a disturbingly low level of R/D activity in the private sector, (2) the necessity for a reordering of priorities in directing research efforts in the future, and (3) a lack of recognition to date of the importance of systems evaluation in R/D activities.

One of the most difficult items to justify economically on any budget is a training program. The costs can easily be identified--primarily the cost of the program and the inconvenience and cost of filling in for the men taking the training by working other personnel extra hours at overtime rates. Operating efficiency, higher productivity, increased plant availability, development of confidence, improvement in morale and less absenteeism are only a few of the benefits which far exceed the costs. A good preparation plant training program can accomplish more in 5 weeks than can be accomplished in five years of on-the-lob operation. During recent years, coal preparation plants have become more sophisticated and complex as the specification for coal used by electric utilities in their power plants have required improvements in coal quality to adhere to air quality regulations and to improve boiler performance and reliability.

A selective extraction and separation of zirconium by solvent extraction with 1-octanol is proposed. The process is based on the dissolution of the metal basic carbonates in hydrochloric acid in the presence of potassium fluoride, using 1-octanol as extractant. The effect of several process parameters, including hydrochloric acid and potassium fluoride concentrations, reaction time, and phase ratio between the aqueous and the organic phase was investigated. Zirconium is enriched in the organic phase. The best extraction and separation results were obtained with the basic carbonate dissolved in 10% hydrochloric acid and 1.5 M potassium fluoride. The optimum reaction time was 15 min with an organic to aqueous phase ratio of 2:1. Based on the selectivity of zirconium over hafnium in the organic phase, a McCabe-Thiele diagram was constructed. A near complete stripping of zirconium from the organic phase was achieved using a 3 M sulphuric acid solution. Additional studies are required in order to determine the reaction mechanism and the chemical speciation of the current investigation.
