With the exception of sublevel caving, the most common method of underground mining in Sweden is the "cut-and-fill" method. It is normally used for mining non-ferrous metals , and' is used extensively in the complex sulfide ore mines of the Boliden Company in north and central Sweden as well as the mines of the STORA and Vieille Montagne Companies in central Sweden. All in all, the cut-and-fill method is used in 13 of Sweden's 45 mines. As the mines are relatively small, the volume of ore mined by this method represents only about 5 % of the total ore production in Sweden. The commercial value, however, is much large than this percentage would imply. The production volumes and grades of some typical mines are shown in Table I. As seen, when rated internationally, the grades are comparatively low. The prices are set according to ?international metal prices? as dictated by the London stock exchange, and in lieu of governmental support, rational management methods are critical in order to achieve satisfactory profit.

Alternating current electrocoagulation (AC/EC) may be an alternative to chemical coagulation in the thickening of tailings in the mineral, coal and petroleum industries. In the current study, ground silica (d50 as received, 20 µm) served as the model tailings solid with characteristically poor settling behavior. Its natural initial settling rate was 1.6 x 10-3 cm/min. This paper discusses the indirect application of AC/EC via aluminum electrodes to the enhancement of the settling behavior of the silica. ?Indirect AC/EC? means that the silica was coagulated upon dispersion in water that had been treated by AC/EC. The effect of AC/EC retention time on settling behavior is examined and the water chemistry is analyzed. Test results show that the initial settling rate of silica was enhanced by a factor of 4,000 at its maximum of 6.4 cm/min, under the conditions employed. Settling enhancement was achieved upon contact between the AC/EC-treated water and the silica, and the enhanced initial settling rate was dictated by the floc size. The aluminum dosage increased with AC/EC retention time, reaching a maximum concentration that was equivalent to 13.1% of that predicted by Faraday?s law. Complex aluminum ions are considered to have adsorbed onto the silica surface and an adsorption mass ratio of 0.3 mg Al/g silica was the most effective in enhancing settling behavior. Owing to pH change or slow kinetics, aluminum hydroxide precipitation did not lower the ion product ([Al3+][OH-]3) below the KSP of 6.3 x 10-32.

Exposure to particulates containing metals and metal fumes (PCMMF) is a potential concern in ore refining and smelting. Some metals of primary interest are arsenic, cadmium, copper and lead, which have been linked to various adverse health effects. The current National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sampling method for metals in particulates requires the use of a filter, precision airflow pump and laboratory analysis. A major concern with this method is the one-to-two weeks? wait before laboratory results are available for use in determining if additional controls are needed to assure adequate exposure protection for workers. Particulates containing these metals were sampled during sixteen sampling events at a copper smelter using the traditional NIOSH methods. Monitoring of particulates was simultaneously conducted using a TSI 8520 Dust-Trak real-time aerosol monitor with a 10-µm-cutpoint sampling inlet. NIOSH analytical methods related to particulates and metals (methods 0500, 0600 and 7300) were used to determine particulate mass and individual mass contributions of metals on sample filters. Linear regressions with y-intercepts forced to zero were developed to determine the relationship between the PM10 measurements recorded by the DustTrak and laboratory-reported total particulate mass, PM10 and respirable arsenic, cadmium, copper and lead concentrations. These linear regressions yielded correction factors that can be applied to DustTrak readings to obtain total particulate mass, PM10 and respirable concentration estimates for each of the four metals. The R2 (coefficient of determination) values from the linear regressions ranged from 0.65 for total lead to 0.91 for total copper. These results suggest that the DustTrak may produce real-time data useful in providing estimates for airborne concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, copper and lead in copper smelter particulates.

Large reserves of coal and uranium exist in the San Juan Basin of northwestern New Mexico. The mining and development of these resources necessarily also involves depletion of area water resources and disturbance of the hydrogeologic framework. In an effort to better define the water resources and hydrogeologic framework of this region, the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources, the U. S. Geological Survey, and the State Engineer's Office are presently engaged in a cooperative study of the Hydrogeology and Ground-Water Resources of Northwestern New Mexico. The purposes of this paper are to introduce our project, review tine coal and uranium resources of the San Juan Basin, and discuss the various hydrogeologic considerations recognized in their exploitation.

Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and non-fatal injuries. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) between 2010 and 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84% involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided, or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action (e.g., using fall protection) would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate, and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.

The development of forced aeration as an approach to enhancing copper sulfide leaching is traced from its earliest development up to present day operations using this technology. Both large-scale field tests and commercial operations are covered. The historical portion is preceded by an introductory discussion of the role of air (oxygen) in sulfide leaching. Sufficient aeration may be achieved via naturally induced convective airflow. However, cases are identified where this is insufficient, leading to retardation of the sulfide leach rate. For these situations, forced aeration may be beneficial. The historical portion of the paper focuses on the major field tests that have been conducted in Montana, Nevada and Utah, along with commercial operations in the United States, Australia, Chile and Peru. The paper concludes with some general comments about the applicability of forced aeration, which are based on the information developed to-date.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry. Surface and underground limestone is one commodity recently surveyed. The sound levels of mining and processing equipment were recorded to identify noise sources. Full-shift worker noise exposures were completed to determine the exposure of various occupations. This paper presents the results of the noise research conducted in both underground and surface limestone mines, detailing the equipment likely to cause worker overexposures, and the occupations experiencing overexposures. Implications for worker noise exposure reduction are also reported.

In the last few years major industrial companies have begun to realize the importance of Reliability as an enterprise strategy that, properly implemented, will improve financial performance. Typical results of an effective Enterprise Reliability Strategy include a 20% -50% reduction in maintenance cost accompanied by a 5% - 10%increase in real production capacity, with no capital investment in production equipment. One factor fueling the race to acquire and implement enterprise reliability is the pressure for companies to be increasingly cost-effective and competitive in global markets. In a recent study, Asset Productivity: The Next Wave, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG)stated that, “In order to compete for funds, companies must offer investor returns that are competitive with other opportunities. Alternative investments such as dot-com and others with non-traditional business models have raised the bar.” (APDF version of the study can be downloaded at www.bcg.com). BCG views asset productivity as the most powerful mechanism for increasing shareholder return. The author believes that the most effective way to increase Fixed Asset Productivity is to maximize asset utilization by increasing the Reliability of the Assets and the associated processes. Developing and implementing an ERS requires significant effort and knowledge. Most companies have difficulty finding a sufficient supply of these valuable commodities to implement an ERS Program internally. Many companies also struggle with figuring out how to get started and what direction to proceed.

Environmental pressures on waste disposal are forcing pigment producers to use higher content TiO2 feedstocks with lower levels of trace elements. Despite this, 50% of the worlds TiO2 comes from ilmenite concentrates with only 37 -54 % TiO2 An industry growth rate of 25 % in the next ten years combined with trends to diminishing resources and lower grades for rutile (95 % TiO2) and leucoxenized ilmenite (55 to 90% TiO2) mean that unless new discoveries are made soon, the industry will become even more reliant on ilmenite. A hypothetical ideal feedstock is presented and strategies to obtain it are suggested. Reasons for some of the mineral specifications are given.

Operators in North America must be efficient quality suppliers to thrive in a talc market in which many overseas suppliers have advantages such as lower hourly wages, shorter distances to ports, and less government regulation and intervention. Continuous improvement through teamwork and innovation is needed in the following areas to thrive amidst worldwide competition: 1) Maximization of the in-place value of ore. 2) Research and development to yield new processes and products. 3) Safe productivity. 4) Involvement in legislative processes. 5) Wellness programs to lower health care costs.

As market conditions become more competitive, U.S. coal producers are faced with the increasing need to find methods of lowering production costs in their operations. One area worthy of investigation is the additional recovery of fine coal that is normally discarded in the preparation plant waste stream. United Coal Company is currently assessing the capability of the Deister Flotaire, a new application of a column flotation cell, to recover additional, saleable coal from preparation plant waste. This paper presents the technical data obtained to date. Work with a 0.76 m (30 inch) diameter cell installed in a plant shows considerable coal recovery is possible from a nominal 0.595 run (28 mesh) X 0 refuse stream.

The U.S. coal mining industry consumes a significant amount of energy, primarily diesel fuel and electricity. The continuous global increase in energy demand, high energy prices, and environmental issues related to carbon dioxide emission represent a substantial challenge for the mining industry. This paper presents a result of research work on development of an integrated data environment system for analysis and control of energy consumption in a surface coal mine. A case study on an operating surface coal mine is carried out to demonstrate the practical application of the developed system. The research work presented here may be used by mining professionals to help provide the answers to the crucial questions of when, where, and how much energy is being used. A change of support model consists of a procedure to change a stationary histogram at a small data scale to represent a larger scale; typically a distribution of sample drill-hole data is changed to represent a chosen selective mining unit (SMU) scale. Most grade variables average arithmetically. Thus, the mean stays the same for different scales, and the variance changes according to well-established theory using average variogram values. The longstanding challenge has been to predict how the shape of the histogram changes. The discrete gaussian model is widely used because it appears reasonable and introduces few artifacts; there are no artificial minimum/maximum values and the target mean and variance are reproduced exactly. The resulting distribution shape, however, is strongly dependent on a multivariate gaussian distribution. The authors generalize the approach by taking advantage of a property of the isofactorial model, which allows one to specify where the random function falls on the spectrum between a low-entropy mosaic model and a maximum-entropy diffusion model. A measure of dissemination (MD) is computed using a ratio of the madogram and the variogram. The change of support algorithm is developed that uses a variable measure of dissemination (VMD) that is easily calculated and fit to data from the deposit. The resulting VMD change of support model is very flexible to represent different mineralization styles encountered in practice; global predictions of recoverable reserves are more accurate and decision-making is improved. A number of real examples are shown to demonstrate the approach.

The Yanacocha Project is the first foreign investment in Peruvian mining since Cuajone (1976). Three years after the project began, it has become the largest producer of gold from heap leach operations in the world and the top producer in Latin America. The success of Minera Yanacocha (MYSA) opens a new chapter in Peruvian mining with the exploitation of its widely spread gold deposits and has attracted the interest of foreign investors in Peru's ample mineral resources. Construction began on August 1, 1992 and after twelve months of arduous work, the first gold bar was poured on August 7, 1993 from ore from the Carachugo mine. In 1993, Minera Yanacocha produced 81,000 ounces of gold and 304,000 ounces in 1994 (40% above budget). Production is expected to exceed 500,000 ounces in 1995 with the start-up of operations in the Maqui Maqui mine. This paper presents a summary of MYSA's experiences during its first two years of operations in the areas of mining, ore processing, environmental protection, loss control and community assistance. The paper also shows that MYSA's successes are not only due to the richness of the deposit, but also to the combination of a number of factors basic to the project's success, such as: an economic policy favoring investment in Peru, the availability of highly qualified local personnel to facilitate the transfer of technology from the United States and the desire and determination of the partners to carry the project forward in an initial atmosphere of uncertainty and terrorism.

The refractory materials industry provides the largest commercial market for nonmetallurgical grade bauxite. Refractory grade bauxite is prepared from bauxites having low iron, titania, and alkali content by calcining at temperatures near 1,650° C. Although there are substantial bauxite reserves in the world, premium grade bauxite ores suitable for use in refractory applications are limited to only a few specific sources, primarily in Guyana and the People's Republic of China. Consumption of bauxite for refractory use is closely associated with the production and consumption of primary metals, in particular iron and steel. Barring major disruptions within the principal producer nations, sufficient supplies of refractory bauxite will be available to meet world demand well into the next century, and raw material costs will continue to determine the availability of markets for bauxite-based refractory products.

Two coal mine shafts recently completed in Franklin County, Ill., afford experience and accomplishment to warrant review, These shafts provide access to a tract with a potential recovery of one hundred million tons. This work provided the initial sinking by other than a contractor's organization since 1918. Four additional shafts required during the interim were sunk under contract arrangement with others. Supervisory contact and inspection afforded experience to govern planning and conduct of the recent work.

"The wash ore area on the Mesabi iron range covers a regionof the iron bearing formation extending from Grand Rapids on the west to the Hibbing district, about forty miles eastward. Not all of the developed ore bodies are of wash structure; some are of such grades that they can be shipped direct as merchants able ore. It is safe to say, however, that 65 per cent of the ore is of a possible wash structure and of too high a silica content to be classified as merchantable ore. The increase in the number of washing plants completed each year on the western Mesabi shows that ,the product must be of a structure desirable for furnace operation. A classification of flotation processes carried out in concentrated electrolyte solutions, e.g., seawater, is proposed using the most obvious features of these processes: low or high content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions, pulp ionic strength, and pH. The first distinguishable group is the processes carried out in NaCl/KCl solutions, about 0.5 M in the case of salt flotation of inherently hydrophobic minerals, and at concentrations about 10 times higher in the flotation of potash ores. In the flotation of sulfide ores, such as nickel or copper ores, with xanthate-like collectors, the xanthate collector is apparently not affected by pulp ionic strength and only adjustment of frother may be required. Content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions in seawater is the main difference between such systems and fresh water. The presence of these metallic ions can adversely affect flotation in the pH ranges over which these ions hydrolyse. The successful flotation of Cu-Mo ores typically requires depression of pyrite at high pH values achieved with the use of lime. However, in seawater, flotation of Cu-Mo ores requires removal of the hydrolysis products of the Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions or the use of a pyrite depressant that can be effective over the pH ranges that are much below the pH of hydrolysis. Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions also affect flotation of phosphate ores with fatty acids. In this case, the depression mechanism is not caused by precipitating magnesium hydroxides on the mineral surface but by precipitation of collector insoluble salts, and the same ions are responsible for depression in both cases. In the seawater flotation of Cu-Mo sulfide ores and phosphate ores, the practical solution involves either removal of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions prior to the flotation or complexation with other reagents.

For many years the green and dry compressive strengths' of pellets have been, considered as possible criteria of pellet performance during induration. Although widely quoted throughout the industry, little attention has been given to standardizing the unfired pellet compressive strength test or to determining the characteristics of the test. The purpose-of this study was to compare the constant deformation rate test with that using a constant loading rate in addition, the dependence of these tests on such pellet properties as size, weight, and method of balling was to be investigated.
