The rheological properties of five kaolins, isostatically pressurized at 4 x10 Pa for 10 min in the presence/absence of water, was determined. Under dry conditions, measured viscosity values either decreased or remained the same. After treatment under wet conditions, measured viscosity values were 30-60% higher at high shear and 50-60% higher at low shear. These results correlate with variations in nanomorphology and structural order. Dry compaction degraded kaolinite crystals but wet-pressing appeared to cause an increase in the proportion of euhedral crystallites and a decrease in deformed crystals. Dry compaction decreased the low-defect phase proportion (ldp), but in contrast, the ldp in wet-treated kaolins remained constant or increased. Results show that hydrous pressure treatment produces a change in viscosity of kaolin suspensions, yielding the potential for improving paper coating performance, whereas anhydrous pressure treatment decreased or maintained the viscosity.

The wear resistance of an alloy in heavy mill liner sections may be quite different from that of the same alloy in small balls and other light sections. This fact was established by means of a well standardized laboratory test that was validated for ball mill service. The salient properties of mill liner alloys, including austenitic manganese steels, medium alloy hardenable steels, and abrasion resistance cast irons are described, critically compared, and quantitatively ranked in terms of mill liner service. Where they are tough enough the high-chromium and other martensitic cast irons (e.g. Ni-Hard) promise maximum economy, but their section sensitivity is a limitation. To overcome this an extensive research program studied over a hundred experimental alloys, ranking them for heavy section abrasion resistance by means of the laboratory test. Computer analysis of the results provided a parabolic formula in terms of composition, the apexes of the parabolas providing optimum wear resistance. From the extensive family of parabolas one apex was selected for intensive study in experimental liners, pilot plant production, development of quality controls, and finally full scale production. This is a 19% chromium iron critically alloyed with nickel and molybdenum and hardened by heat treatment. It has excellent resistance to various types of abrasion, but its chief advantage is in heavy mill liner sections, where it has about 25% better abrasion resistance than the best of the quality controlled chilled Ni-Hards. It is also tougher. After production problems were solved, a number of ball and rod mill tests were arranged on a guaranteed performance basis. Two of these, representing about 138,000 pounds of mill liner castings, have recently confirmed in service the superiority that was predicted by the laboratory tests.

The recovery of manganese from lower grade resources has been studied for a number of years. Of key importance of prior work, was the discovery that higher valent manganese resource can be readily leached with sulfurous acid. This eliminates the need for high temperature reduction roasting that is conventionally used in processing high grade material. High temperature roasting is energy intensive, emits a large amount of carbon dioxide, and would not be economical for processing lower grade material. While the prior work provides important information to extract manganese from lower grade resources, the production of unwanted by-products, and high water and energy usage has limited its commercial use. This paper describes the results from laboratory work that demonstrate solutions to problems, which to this point preclude commercial development. Preliminary mass and energy balances show that a significant opportunity exists in producing manganese with this hydrometallurgical scheme in a low cost, environmentally friendly manner. Emphasis of the work is on low water use, low overall energy use and economic destruction of unwanted by-products.

City Water Tunnel No. 3 is being built in order to provide a redundant system for delivering 4,542,500 m3 (1.2 billion gallons) of water per day throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The present tunnels, City Tunnel No. 1 and 2 (Figure 1), were put in service in 1917 and 1936 respectively, and both have been in continuous service. Tunnels No. 1 and 2 can-not be shut down for inspection or repair until City Tunnel No. 3 has been completed. City Tunnel No. 3 has two stages (Figure 1).Stage One is 20.1 km (12.5 mi) long and is presently delivering drinking water to the boroughs of the Bronx and Manhattan. Stage Two consists of the Brooklyn-Queens Tunnel 17.7 km (11 mi) and the Manhattan Tunnel 14 km (9 mi). The Brooklyn-Queens leg is complete and is set to be put in service soon. The Manhattan Tunnel is being constructed and is the subject of this paper. The Manhattan Tunnel (Figure 1) is comprised of three legs: the north, south and east legs. The con-tract includes the excavation of 8,976 m (29,500 ft) of tunnel and the lining of 14,561 m (47,773 ft) of tunnel. The south tunnel, 5,705 m (18,720 ft), was excavated but not lined, under a previous contract. The tunnel ranges from 181 m (600 ft) to 152 m (500 ft) in depth in the bedrock under Manhattan. The tunnel contract also includes the construction of nine new shafts, 161 m (530 ft) average depth, and the completion of a tenth shaft (the previously built construction shaft). The Manhattan Tunnel contract was awarded to the sole bidder Schiavone/Shea/Frontier Kemper Joint Venture (SSF) for $668,532,680.00, on January 31, 2005. The Manhattan Tunnel was designed ?in house? by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the construction management was provided by a combined staff of the DEP and a joint venture of Jenny Engineering and URS.

"At present scenario, there has been an increasing demand in the usage of blend coal in power sector; regardless of how, specific knowledge on burning and ignition characteristics and their interactive effects is stingy. In this work a detailed investigation was therefore taken up to study in detail the combustion characteristics of selected coal samples and their blends. Certain parameters were believed to have significant effects on combustion characteristics of individual coal and their blend. Major parameters identified for this purpose included proximate analysis, combustion conditions, heating rate, reaction regions, blending ratios, ignition condition, reactivity (or reaction rate) and burnout temperatures. With the help of these parameters, thermal features and reaction kinetics of the individual and blended samples were investigated through a qualitative and quantitative thermo-gravimetric analysis of two different individual coals and their blend carried out in an oxygen atmosphere from ambient to 800 0C at a constant heating rate of 10 K/min. A significant difference in terms of rate of mass loss with temperature correlated from Arrhenius expression along with coal-coal blend interactions and deviation from their expected behaviour, have been observed between the kinetics of individual and blend samples, the latter showing better ignition performance and comprehensive combustion phase. It was also found that particles having the lowest percentages of volatile matter and ash could possibly be blended with particles having high ash and volatile matter to meet the required burning condition which can be effective in terms of cost savings, improved fuel economy, reduced undesirable exhaust emissions and improved safety of coal burning equipment. Experimental results further indicated that individual samples and coal blend samples have different combustion features in terms of residue left, peak temperatures and activation energies. Thermodynamic activation parameters such as activation energy, pre-exponential factor and order of reaction were computed from the thermal data using the modified form of non-isothermal methods. INTRODUCTION Coal has been the most significant source of energy for India and would remain so at least for the next few decades. About 60-65% of the electricity produced in India is from coal fired power plants. Indian coal is of drift origin and of high ash content. Ash content of the coal burnt in power plants in India is in the range of 30-45%, most of it being Run-of-Mine coal. Most of the power plants in India source their coal from number of mines, most common being multiple sourcing. Usually coal from each source [1] is burnt separately. For various reasons mostly associated with logistics, burning of blended coal is rarely practiced. Blending of coal is practised mainly for improving the quality of available coal and meets the shortage of coal supply. Blending technique is generally practised in power industries to reduce the cost of power generation along with mitigating combustion performance or slagging problem ensuring consistency in as fired coal quality and also for environmental compliance. Blending good quality imported coal can improve coal quality and helps in preserving indigenous coal resources for longer period [2]. Use of blended coal shall reduce load on all boiler components (Mill, CHP, Boiler, AHP) & reduce O&M cost and increase the availability. The main purpose of blending is to get a blended as fired coal having ash, volatile matter and gross calorific value close to design coal and the two coals are to be blended in such ratio proportions that resultant coal blend have desired ash, volatile matter and gross calorific value [3]. At the heart of the mining process are a number of basic and fundamental tasks whose regular and repeated performance constitute the mining cycle. As will be discussed presently, these tasks are the basic components of the mining system. Section 9, Production Operations, provides the mine designer and engineer with an understanding of these tasks and with sufficient design principles to allow this person to create an efficient mine system. This section is meant to be an introduction and adjunct to subsequent sections that describe specific mining systems. However, sufficient design information is included here for the independent design of mine systems that may not be described elsewhere or for subsequent verification of existing designs. For the purposes of this section, mining subsumes excavation; thus this material applies to any excavation process. Accordingly, this section is written in general enough terms to include both surface and underground mining. It may be used also for civil engineering excavations that often involve the same steps. Obviously, the actual procedures undertaken in any specific mining system will appear to be very different from those taken in any other system. This is certainly true when comparing surface with underground methods. Yet the fundamental principles are often the same. This segment is written to explicate the basics. Wherever appropriate, the section will suggest the differences between the application process to surface or to underground mining.

Simulated weathering tests are used to estimate leachate quality of rocks containing varying concentrations of pyrite and carbonates at mines. This study reports the inter-laboratory results from the third phase of a three part effort to develop a standardized, reproducible simulated weathering test for coal mine overburden. Initial development in phases I and II included evaluation of different test apparatus, effects of particle size, gas composition, leaching frequency and other variables. Phases I and II results are reported by Brady et al (2004) and Hornberger et al (2004). In Phase III, a standard column leaching protocol was used by eight commercial, government and university labs to test five rocks of different lithology, pyrite and carbonate content. Ideally, a simulated weathering test should have three characteristics to be useful in mine drainage studies. These include the capability to produce repeatable results, accuracy in simulating field conditions, and a concise test protocol of weeks to a few months. Simulated weathering, or kinetic testing, produces an effluent that simulates mine drainage composition. This can be beneficial for predicting mine drainage quality in comparison to whole rock analyses. The effluent may be tested for the same water quality parameters as the drainage produced during mining, such as pH, acidity, alkalinity, sulfate, iron, manganese, aluminum or other parameters. If the physical, chemical, and biological conditions of the kinetic tests are representative of those found in the mine environment, leachate composition may be used to estimate the water quality parameter concentrations produced during mining. Hornberger and Brady (1998), and Geidel et al (2000), compiled comprehensive chapters on kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction. These sources included: (1) a chronology and synopsis of scientific literature on these kinetic tests as they have developed over approximately 50 years, (2) discussion of the influence of physical, chemical, and biological processes, and (3) general guidelines for test procedures, data interpretation, and recommendations for further research to develop standard methods. Most of the kinetic test methods in use today were substantially developed and applied more than 40 or 50 years ago, including leaching columns (Braley, 1949), humidity cells (Hanna and Brant, 1962), Soxhlet reactors (Pedro, 1961), and field scale tests (Glover and Kenyon, 1962). . The most commonly used kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction are leaching columns and humidity cells. While these kinetic test methods and others have been used in hundreds of mine drainage studies as shown in Hornberger and Brady (1998) and other references (e.g. Sorini, 1997), they have rarely been used in coal mine permitting by either regulatory agencies or the mining industry. The major impediment to routine use of kinetic test methods is the variation in the design and operation of these kinetic tests, and lack of a standardized, accepted (e.g. by EPA or ASTM) test method. Interpretation and data comparison from different studies can be difficult. METHODS Five rocks of varying lithology, mineralogy, carbonate and pyrite content were collected in bulk from Pennsylvanian age coal measures in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Indiana. Mineralogical composition of the samples was characterized in detail by Hammerstrom et al (in press) using optical, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe methods. Acid Base Accounting (Sobek et al 1978; Skousen et al, 1997, Kania, 1998) was performed on bulk samples for % total sulfur (%S) as a measure of pyrite and potential acid generation, and Neutralization Potential (NP) as an index of carbonate content. A modified NP test, following the procedure suggested by Skousen et al, 1997 was also conducted for four of the five samples. The modified NP test accounts for initial acid consumption, Fe oxidation, and subsequent Fe hydrolysis by the iron carbonate mineral siderite. Siderite, even though it is a carbonate gives zero net alkalinity. Lithologic, Acid Base Accounting and general mineral composition data for the five rocks are shown in table 1 (see Appendix). Whole rock elemental analysis for major and trace elements was conducted on a sub-sample of each rock type. One laboratory was contracted to mix, homogenize, and size the bulk samples and prepare sub-samples for all the participating labs. Splits were sent to eight labs, and each organization was provided a detailed set of instructions for column assembly and leaching procedure. The protocol was developed based on results from phases 1and 2 of this study. The principal features of the column assembly are: a specific composition of particle size by weight (table 2), weekly leaching cycles, and incubation under humidified air containing 10% CO2. Figure 1 shows the column construction. [ ] The particle size distribution of the crushed rock sample is largely an artifact of the crushing process, rather than a natural systems process like the particle size distribution of a soil or an unconsolidated sedimentary deposit. The standardized particle size distribution, shown in Table 2, promotes operational consistency of the weathering test procedure, and provides better control over reaction kinetics. Large amounts of fine particles within specific zones of the leaching columns have been found to impede uniform fluid flow and/or gas flow (Hornberger and Brady, 1998). Regarding reaction kinetics, the importance of surface area to volume ratios has been described in a previous phase of this study (Brady et al., 2004), and significant differences in crushed particle size distributions and effective surface areas were found among the lithologic units. The Otjikoto Gold Mine in the Republic of Namibia is located approximately 300 kilometers north of the capital city of Windhoek. The project features surface mining with a modern gravity/carbon-in-pulp mill for ore treatment and recovery of gold. Initial mill design capacity was 2.5 million tonne per annum but then expanded after 9 months of operation to 3.1 million tonne per annum. The technical steps to establish the Otjikoto mill design from process selection in the due diligence stage, through flowsheet development in the feasibility study followed by detailed engineering design are reviewed in this paper along with mill performance during start-up and in 2019.

Considering the nature of open pit mines, harvest volume, it usually is required to remove a lot of waste to access to mineral planned grade. So, one of the most important part of open pit mines design, is waste dump site selection. Many factors are effective in waste dump site selection. These factors are sometimes in conflict with each other. So selecting the desired location for waste dump is a process complex and multi-criteria decision making. There are a variety of methods for decision making under complicated condition, such as fuzzy, Delphi, multi-criteria decision making and Expert system methods can be hinted. VIKOR method, which is one of the decision making multi criteria methods, is useful tool for decision-making. On the other hand with regard to uncertainty in decision-making, fuzzy approach is a useful tool for this purpose. This article has tried to select the best waste dump site in Sari Gunay Gold Mine by Fuzzy VIKOR. The results show that C position has a higher priority than other positions.

A conventional mechanical anchor bolt consists of a smooth bar threaded at the anchor end, with a conical wedge, and a mechanical shell anchor. When the smooth bar is torqued, the conical wedge pushes the shell anchor against the borehole wall. Coal mines use mechanical bolts in addition to other types of bolts to control the deformation and stabilize the yielded coal ribs. Limited research has been conducted to understand how a mechanical anchor performs in a coal rib. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted the study described in this paper to define the loading characteristics of mechanical bolts (stiffness and capacity) installed in coal ribs at five underground coal mines. Standard pull-out tests were performed in this study to define the loading characteristics of a mechanical rib bolt. Based on the strength of the coal seam and the conditions of the coal mines, the bolts were installed at different amounts of torque. A typical tri-linear load-deformation response was obtained from these tests. It was found that the anchorage capacity depends on the coal strength, and the anchorage stiffness depends on the installation torque. The outcome of this research provides essential data for rib support design. INTRODUCTION Rib falls are a serious hazard in underground coal mines. In the last 10 years, rib failures have resulted in 17 fatalities, representing 52% of the ground-fall fatalities in underground coal mines in the United States (MSHA, 2018). Although resin bolts has been used increasingly in the last few years to control coal ribs, mechanical bolting (mainly expansion-shell bolts) is still used in many underground coal mines. Recently, NIOSH researchers surveyed 90 sites in 14 underground coal mines in the Eastern United States and found that 79% of the mines determine their rib support requirement based on the depth, mining height, and the loading conditions, of which 35% use the conventional mechanical bolts. Conventional mechanical bolts are preferable for rib support because they do not require the miners to be too close to the rib during rib bolting. Hence, using the conventional mechanical rib bolts can reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities during the installation process. The mechanical bolt or the point-anchored bolt is the oldest type of rock bolt that is still in use today. The point-anchored bolt is a tensioned bolt anchored down the hole with a mechanical expansion shell or a grouted medium (Peng and Tang, 1984). Figure 1 shows the components of the mechanical anchor bolt. The mechanical anchor bolt consists of a plug, a shell anchor, a headed smooth bar with the top end threaded, a bearing plate, a hardened washer, and sometimes a friction-reducing washer. The shell anchor can be either standard or bail type. The shell of the standard type is held in place by a nut, while the bail anchor uses a strap to hold the shell in place (Peng, 2008). The diameter of the smooth bar is generally 5/8 in for the #5 bolt or 6/8 in for the #6 bolt. The diameter of the hole that the bolt is inserted into must be carefully controlled since an oversized hole can result in poor anchorage (Moss, 1971). The anchorage is obtained by applying torque to the bolt head, which in turn pulls the wedge down in the shell and expands the serrated leaves against the sides of the hole-wall. In the resin-grouted anchor, the resin replaces the mechanical expansion shell at the end of the hole. The anchorage is achieved by bonding between the resin, bolt, and the hole-wall.

The abstract discusses the synthesis and investigation of polyacrylamide functionalized chitosan polymers (CS-PAMs) as selective depressants for pyrite in the flotation of galena and chalcopyrite from complex sulfide ore. The study employed response surface methodology (RSM) to model and optimize the flotation process, varying parameters like the degree of deacetylation of chitosan, weight ratio of chitosan to acrylamide, and CS-PAM dosage. The developed RSM models effectively predicted iron and lead grades and recoveries, while optimization showed optimal pyrite separation from galena and chalcopyrite using CS-PAM synthesized from chitosan with a high degree of deacetylation and a specific chitosan:acrylamide weight ratio.

The formation of elemental sulfur on the surface of sphalerite in aqueous systems was investigated. Hallimond tube flotation tests showed that unoxidized sphalerite did not float well without a collector. Flotation recoveries of greater than 95 percent were obtained without the use of a collector or frother after the sphalerite had been reacted with oxygen under pressure and water at pH 2.8 at room temperature. High flotation recoveries also resulted when sphalerite was reacted in acidic solutions in the presence of platinum sponge, titanium sponge, 316 stainless steel, copper turnings, or [10-5M++]. Conditions which produced high flotation recoveries of sphalerite yielded contact angles of 37° to 40° and also produced elemental sulfur. The increase in elemental sulfur on the surface of sphalerite was detected by elemental sulfur extraction with petroleum ether, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), and the electron beam microprobe. The quantity of elemental sulfur formed was insufficient to be detected by infrared or Raman spectroscopy, or by the optical microscope or by the scanning electron microscope. An electrochemical type reaction for the production of elemental sulfur in acidic solutions was proposed. The cathodic reduction of oxygen was the slow step which needed to be catalyzed. A chemical type reaction which produced H2S rather than elemental sulfur was evident in non-oxidizing conditions.

The Coteau Properties Company's Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mining operation utilizing large draglines, trucks and shovels, tractor-scrapers, and bulldozers to uncover a single coal seam. In 1989, a work order system was instituted to record data by equipment type, cost, productivity, and distance, and to provide historical information for planning the most efficient and economic use of each equipment type in the mining operation. This report explains how the work order system was initiated, what data is tracked, and how the data is utilized for equipment and project scheduling.

An atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between silica surfaces immersed in solutions of hydrolysable cations and/or sodium oleate. Hydrophobic forces were observed at the pH range where the concentration of the singly-charged hydroxo-complexes (CaOH+ or MgOH+) in solution is the highest. In the absence of oleate, the adsorption of the hydroxo-complexes was indicated by the disappearance of the repulsive hydration force. These results suggest that the hydrolysable cations adsorb on silica as singly-charged hydroxo-complexes. Based on the results obtained in the present work, a model for the adsorption of hydrolysable cations has been developed.

The characteristics of comminuted hematite products using a high pressure grinding roller (HPGR) and conventional jaw crusher (JC) were comparatively studied by screening, optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) techniques. Major properties investigated included product size distribution, particle cracks, specific surface areas and pore volumes. Results showed that in a closed-circuit operation with a screen opening of 3.2 mm, the HPGR and JC gave a similar P80, but the HPGR achieved a more uniform size distribution, more fines and a higher crushing efficiency. Three modes of cracks were identified, namely transgranular cracks, innergranular microcracks and intergranular microcracks. Transgranular cracks originated from shearing breakage. Innergranular and intergranular microcracks were generated by HPGR via the two main nonrandom breakage forms, preferential breakage and interfacial breakage, depending on their respective ability to endure stresses when mineral phases (particles) were loaded against each other. The BET values for the same-size fractions showed that HPGR products gave higher specific surface areas and more pore volumes than JC products. This indicates that HPGR-crushed products are easier to grind because of their high porosity and extra cracks.

Underground mine development begins with the positive investment decision to mine and ends with the inception of full-scale exploitation. It incorporates all activities, personnel, and equipment required for creation of underground access to a mineral deposit. Because of the depletion of near-surface mineral resources, the reduced mobility of large surface mining equipment, increasingly stringent environmental constraints, and the introduction of promising innovations to rock penetration and rock excavating equipment (e.g., continuous miners, rock borers), under-ground mining is projected to account for an increased share of worldwide mineral production in the foreseeable future. Without proper engineering during the mine development phase, failure of the underground mining project is axiomatic. A frustration attendant to coverage of the complex area of underground mine development lies not only with the need for treatment of the many disparate specialties within the area but even with the lack of systematization of these specialties in what is recognized as a vital precursor to successful mining. The high temperature lubricant molybdenite, MoS2, is usually produced by a complex sequence of processes involving mineral dressing of molybdenite concentrates followed by leaching with hydrofluoric acid to remove abrasive impurities such as silica (1). Many attempts have been made, mostly by techniques involving, direct fusion of molybdenum compounds with sulphur, to produce synthetic molybdenite. However, apart from some experiments of geochemical interest (2) in which aqueous solutions of sodium sulphomolybdate, Nat MoS4, were decomposed under pressure at temperatures between 300°C and 700°C, no attempts to produce the mineral by hydrometallurgical procedures have been reported. Since molybdenite is nominally a compound of tetravalent molybdenum with sulphur, and the most common state of molybdenum is +6, production of molybdenite is likely to involve reduction and sulphidization. Deposits of rare earth elements (REE) are found in NM, but they have not been important exploration targets in past years because demand has been met elsewhere. However, with the projected increase in demand and potential lack of available production from China, the New Mexico deposits are being re-examined for their potential. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Caballo, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Past production of bastnaesite has come from the Gallinas Mountains. Carbonatites are found in the Lemitar and Chupadera Mountains, Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills, Lobo Hill, and Monte Largo (Sandia Mountains). Although carbonatites have not been found in the Gallinas Mountains, they are suspected to occur in the subsurface based upon mineralogy/alteration. Disseminated Y-Zr deposits in syenite are found at Pajarito Mountain, Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation near Ruidoso. In 1990, Molycorp, Inc. reported historic resources of 2.7 million short tons grading 0.18% Y2O3 and 1.2% ZrO2 as disseminated eudialyte. Two additional deposit types have potential for REE in New Mexico: Cretaceous heavy mineral, beach-placer sandstone deposits and pegmatites. Exploration is ongoing in the Lemitar, Gallinas, and Cornudas Mountains.

Heavy minerals have been mined from the sands of the United States’ Atlantic Coastal Plain since the early part of the twentieth century. Production of ilmenite from beach sands near Mineral City (Ponte Vedra), Florida, began in 1916. The first reported large-scale recovery of zircon in Florida was reported from this deposit in 1922 and of rutile in 1925. These operations ceased in 1929. Today the Ponte Vedra Country Club and Golf Course is situated in the center of the former mining site. In 1942 heavy-mineral operations were established on 202 hectares of land situated in Duval County, Florida. The location is about 16 kilometers east of the center of Jacksonville, Florida, in an area known as Arlington. This operation demonstrated that low-grade sand containing only 2 to 3 percent titanium minerals could be concentrated economically with the Humphreys spiral and that the oxides could be separated from the heavy silicates by electrostatic methods. Much of this area is now covered by a large mall and is a major retail- commercial center. Between 1958 and 1964 the Skinner tract, a deposit about 4 kilometers south of the above deposit, was mined. Today the area of this deposit is known as Deerwood, a gated country club community on the southside of Jacksonville. Further inland, E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. has been mining heavy minerals from a physiographic feature known as Trail Ridge since 1948, and a deposit near Green Cove Springs, Florida has been in production since 1972. Since the start of heavy-mineral mining in the southeastern United States, nine heavy-mineral ore bodies either have been or are being exploited in Florida and Georgia. Other deposits either have been lost to mining or are yet to be mined. These deposits have different origins. Some formed along shorelines at the heights of marine transgressions while others formed on regressional beach ridge plains during periods of temporary stillstands or slight transgressions. These different origins are reflected in the chemical and physical characteristics of the deposits. Ilmenite in older, more western deposits has a higher TiO2 content than ilmenite in younger, more eastern deposits. TiO2 content does not very with north-south direction. Garnet and epidote are absent or rare in the older Trail Ridge deposits, but progressively become common in the younger Duval Upland, Crestal Pamlico, and Holocene deposits. Grain size is coarsest for Trail Ridge sediments and finest for sediments in Duval Upland and Crestal Pamlico deposits. The average grain size for Holocene deposits is intermediate between Trail Ridge and Duval Upland deposits. The two models for the origin of the heavy-mineral deposits – deposits formed at the height of major marine transgression; and deposits formed during periods of temporary stillstands or slight transgressions that occur during a general marine regression; - are consistent with known sedimentological data and depositional trends.

Tunnel contracts in New York have in recent years had few bidders with the bids received being much higher than anticipated. Since 9/11, security has become a key issue in planning key infrastructure projects in New York. This is especially true in the case of large water supply tunnels. Striking the right balance between cost and security was the major factor in determining the best configurationfor the Kensico-City Tunnel. This paper outlines the efforts made to determine realistic probable bid costs for the tunnel contracts, and the innovative approaches taken to deal with security issues.
