"In situ" measurements of the surface heat transfer coefficient in underground airways by K. R. VeST,* B.Se. (Glas.), M.Se. (N.S.W.) (Visitor) Few "in situ" measurements have been made of the surface heat transfer coefficient in mine airways despite the importance of this coefficient in determining the heat flow into the ventilating air. In this paper, the values obtained at various air velocities and the comparisons of these values with theoretical values are given. Examples are also given ofthe errors which would result if rock surface temperatures were obtained by extrapolation from temperatures further into the rock without taking into account the time delay which occurs before a given change in air temperature reaches the points from which extrapolation is carried out.

"Currently, the matted-based collection process is most widely used for platinum group metal (PGM) recovery. However, because PGM-containing concentrates are becoming more enriched with UG2 (Upper Group 2) low-grade concentrates, this is expected to be integrated or replaced with an alloy collection process.The reduction LG (low-grade) concentrates with silicon carbide (SiC) was investigated. The purpose of the study was to ascertain the feasibility of using SiC as reductant with regard to metal fall, PGM grade in the alloy, slag composition, and overall PGM recovery, and if possible, the integration of such a process in the current matte-based collection process. Rowland and Easterns LG concentrate samples from Lonmin were analysed by Xray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). It was found that SiO2 and MgO are the most abundant oxides and Pd is the most abundant of the PGMs. Sulphide-bearing minerals such as chalcopyrite were detected in low concentrations (below 1%), and Cr2O3 concentrations are between 2-4%. SiC reduction of Rowland and Easterns concentrate were conducted at 1600°C with reductant to concentrate ratios ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 kg SiC per 100 kg concentrate.The reduction experiments revealed that PGM recoveries from Rowland concentrate were poor. SEM images showed entrained metal prills in the slag phase. The slag viscosity at the end of the melt was calculated by using FactSage, and the results indicated that the viscosity was higher than 4 poise, which is above that of Easterns slag. PGM recoveries for Easterns concentrate were significantly better. More than 85% of the Ir and Pd and almost 60% of the Pt were recovered in a test with a reductant to concentrate ratio of 3.5 kg SiC per 100 kg Easterns concentrate. At this reductant to concentrate ratio, Fe recovery was also the highest, at 66%. SEM imaging of a slag sample revealed few or no metal prills entrained. The FeO content in the initial concentrate charge was then increased by adding Peirce-Smith converter slag in order to decrease the slag viscosity and further increase PGM recovery. A test was conducted with the addition of 10 kg converter slag per 100 kg Easterns concentrate. The reductant to concentrate ratio was kept at 3.5 kg SiC per 100 kg Easterns concentrate. The Ir and Pd recoveries were more than 95%, while Pt recovery was almost 70%. Fe recovery increased to 76%. On the basis of these results an optimum feed ratio between Easterns and Rowland concentrates and Peirce-Smith converter slag were calculated. FactSage predicted that the concentrate charge should consist of 70-80% Easterns concentrate with 20-30 kg converter slag per 100 kg LG concentrate. SiC reduction of this optimum LG concentrate charge is expected to recover more than 90% of all PGMs. Cr and Si concentrations in the alloy will be below 1% in total.The effectiveness of SiC as reductant was also compared to carbon reduction. Carbon reduction of an optimum concentrate charge at the same reductant to concentrate ratio resulted in a marginally higher metal fall than SiC reduction. However, gas emissions and energy requirements are higher for carbon reduction.The study has shown that base metals and PGMs can be recovered in an iron alloy by SiC reduction of LG concentrate with converter slag additions. Integration of such a process into the matte-based collection process could be considered as a future alternative for smelting UG2 LG concentrates."

FINANCE The annual accounts, which follow this report, reflect a healthy position and show that measures taken by Council over the last few years to boost income have been successful. A higher income was needed not only to meet rising costs but also so that the services provided by the Institute for its members could be expanded. This year's income of R55 025 showed a further increase compared with last year's figure of R48 307. Income from subscriptions was higher mainly owing to an increased number of Company Affiliates, and this is indicative of the support given by mining and metallurgical companies to the good work being done by the Institute. Further sales of publications of the symposia held over the last few years again made a useful contribution to income of R4560. The first Winter School held in 1973 yielded a surplus of R7495 after the expenses had been deducted from the income received from registration fees. The cost of administering the Institute increased by R2212 compared with the previous year. Included in this was a donation of R1000 to the A.S. & T.S. Trust Fund. The cost of publishing and printing the Journal increased by R2034, but advertising and extraneous sales of the Journal were higher, with the result that the net cost of the

The shear behaviour of infilled joints produced from ordinary gypsum plaster (gyprock) and bentonite was investigated in the laboratory under Constant Normal Stiffness (CNS) conditions. Shear tests were performed on saw-tooth profiles having Joint Roughness Coefficients (JRC) of 4.75 and 9.25 under an initial normal stress (sno) of 0.30 to 1.10 MPa, and at a normal stiffness (kn) of 8.5 kN/mm. Test data under the same sno and infill thickness to asperity height ratio (t/a) were analysed for two different sets of JRC. The peak shear stress plotted against the t/a ratio under constant sno revealed an increase in peak shear stress with the increase in JRC, up to a t/a ratio of about unity. The effect of roughness on the peak shear stress was observed to be minimal when the t/a ratio exceeded 1.40. A mathematical model for the prediction of peak shear stress due to the increased infill thickness has been developed based on a hyperbolic stress-strain relationship and energy balance principles. The model predictions are in good agreement with the laboratory observations. Des essais de cisaillement ont été réalisés sur des profils en dents de scie ayant des coefficients de rugosité des joints (CRJ) variant de 4,75 à 9,25 sous un effort normal initial (sno) de 0,30 à 1,10 MPa, et une rigidité normale (kn) de 8,5 kN/mm. Le résultat des essais conduits sous la même contrainte et épaisseur de remplissage au rapport aspérité/hauteur (t/a) ont été analysés pour deux ensembles différents de CRJ. La variation de l'effort de cisaillement maximal contre le rapport t/a sous une contrainte normale constante a indiqué une augmentation de l'effort de cisaillement maximal avec l'augmentation du CRJ, jusqu'à un rapport de t/a proche de l'unité. L'effet de la rugosité sur l'effort de cisaillement maximal a été minimal quand le rapport t/a a excédé 1,40. Un modèle mathématique pour la prévision de l'effort de cisaillement maximal dû à l'épaisseur accrue du remplissage des joints a été développé sur la base de la variation entre contraintes hyperboliques et déformation et sur des principes de bilan énergétique. Testresultate für gleiche Werte von sno und Verhältnis Fülldicke zu Rauhigkeit (t/a) wurden untersucht für zwei verschiedene Werte von JRC. Die Beziehung zwischen maximaler Schubspannung und und t/a Verhältnis unter konstantem sno zeigte einen Anstieg der maximalen Schubspannung mit zunehmendem JRC, bis zu einem t/a Verhältnis von etwa 1.0. Der Einfluss der Rauhigkeit auf den Maximalwert der Schubspannung war minimal solange das t/a Verhältnis den Wert von 1.40 überstieg. Ein mathematisches Modell wurde entwickelt für die Vorhersage der Schubspannung die von zusätzlicher Fülldicke erwartet werden kann, ausgehend von einer hyperbolischen Spannungs-Dehnung Beziehung und dem Energiegleichgewichts-prinzip. Die Modellvorhersagen zeigten gute Uebereinstimmung mit den Laborbeobachtungen.

Exxaro Sands KZN produces?among other heavy mineral products?high titania slag, which is used as feedstock to the pigment industry. The titania slag is produced from the smelting of ilmenite in two 36 MW DC furnaces. In this smelting process carbon monoxide gas is produced. This gas is cooled, scrubbed and washed to remove entrained dust. This paper provides details on the gas cleaning plant system and the chemistry, mineralogy and size distribution of the particulate material contained in the off-gas stream. Characterization of the dust shows that is consists mainly of ilmenite, but with relatively high levels of SiO2and MnO. Smelting of the dust in a 500 kW DC furnace was carried out to investigate the potential for recovering valuable elements from the dust.

The Third International Conference on Coal Research was held in Sydney, Australia, in October 1976. The papers and proceedings of the Conference will be published in Australia on behalf of the International Committee for Coal Research in April 1977. The papers deal with the economics and practicability of coal conversion, coal winning, resources assessment, safety and dust, and coal and power generation, together with an appreciation of coal potential by the deputy chairman of the U.K. National Coal Board. Copies of the report are available to organizations within member countries of ICCR at a cost of 35 dollars (Australian), including postage, by application to the Executive Officer, Third ICCR, Box 3842 GPO Sydney, Australia 2001. The value of incentive payments in the mining industry by K. SMITH, A.R.S.M., B.Sc. (London) (Member) This paper reviews the history of incentive payments in the mining industry, and gives some indication of the magnitude of improvement that has been achieved by this means in the past. The objective is to promote a more general belief in the efficacy of these methods, and thus to encourage their wider and more effective application by mining engineers in general, and by the rising generation in particular. It is concluded, from a consideration of current productivity levels in the gold-mining industry (still South Africa's leading revenue earner), that further substantial improvement can be achieved by a better understanding of the time-tested principles of incentive payments.

BEEDON AND C. J. JONKER* Dr Bleloch's paper has outlined the advantages of recycling stack-gas of low nitrogen content in the blast furnace. In the first instance it would appear to be extremely beneficial in controlling the hearth temperature and allowing a 100 per cent oxygen-blast to be used. On a second point however we have to disagree. It is claimed that heat is liberated in the combustion zones by the oxidation of CO to CO2 near the tuyeres and in the subsequent reduction of the CO2 by CO. The author has hypothesized as follows, and we quote: 'The C+CO2=2 CO reaction in the outer combustion zone at about 1 700°C is no longer endothermic due to loss of stability of CO2 and its consequent dissociation into CO and free oxygen.' This statement requires closer examination. If we consider the individual events occurring with the CO in the recycled topgas, with the oxygen in the blast and with the coke in the burden, as done by Dr Bleloch, the following heat considerations emerge. All heats of reaction are calculated from the enthalpy values of each reactant and product, as well as the temperature dependence of their molar heat capacities. (a) At the tuyeres: CO+1/2 O2-+CO2 . . . . . (1) CO, CO2 at 500°C; O2 at 25°C. ?H reaction = -65 000 cals/mole CO The reaction (1) is exothermic. (b) In the outer combustion zone: CO2+C?2 CO . . . . . . . . (2) C, CO at 1 700°C; CO2 at 500 0C. ?H reaction = -56 000 cals/mole CO Reaction (2) is endothermic. The overall heat gain of reactions (1) and (2) is ?H=+56 000 - 65 000= -9000 cals/mole CO i.e. the overall reaction is slightly exothermic, the amount of heat liberated is however smaller than suggested by Dr Bleloch. (c) The dissociation CO2+CO+1/2 O2 . . . . . (3) is a highly endothermic reaction at 1 700 0C, requiring 82 000 cals/mole CO2 to proceed to completion. Furthermore, this reaction (3) is energetically not favoured to proceed, as can be observed from the free energy-temperature relationship of figure (3), which favours the formation of CO2 at 1 700 0C. Hence direct dissociation of CO2 at 1 700 0C appears to be unlikely.* The concept of recycling topgas is however still intriguing from many other points of view. Apart from providing a very efficient method of hearth temperature control, it will create a much higher CO partial pressure in the stack. A back-propagation model, which is typical of the models used in the science of artificial neural networks, was applied to the prediction of gossans from the southeast area of Habei Province in China. A success rate of 100 per cent was achieved. The results show that the neural-network approach is good, and that it can be used effectively in the prediction of multi metallic deposits.

"The kinetics of MnO and SiO2 reduction in SiMn slags based on Assmang/Comilog ore and HCFeMn (highcarbon ferromanganese) slag were investigated between 1500 and 1650°C under a CO atmosphere. The results showed that charges containing HCFeMn slag had relatively faster reduction rates than those without. The difference in the driving force for MnO reduction was insignificant among the SiMn slags at 1500°C, which implies a low contribution of the driving force for reduction rate. The slag viscosities were also rather similar, around 1 poise at 1500°C, which could not explain the different reduction rates. Instead, the different charges containing various sulphur contents are believed to give rise to the varying reduction rates. The estimated activation energies for MnO reduction were around 500–920 kJ/mol for charges containing HCFeMn slag, and between 250–300 kJ/mol for those without. Based on the estimated kinetic parameters, the considered rate models were able to describe the reduction of MnO and SiO2 in SiMn slags between 1500 and 1650°C. IntroductionManganese ferroalloys such as ferromanganese (FeMn) and silicomanganese (SiMn) are important ingredients in steel production due to the beneficial effects of manganese on the physical properties of steel. Mn enhances the strength, toughness, and hardness of steel products, and both Mn and Si are used as deoxidizers to prevent the development of porous structures (International Manganese Institute, 2014; Olsen, Tangstad, and Lindstad, 2007; Subramanyam, Swansiger, and Avery, 1990; Tomota et al., 1987).The thermodynamic background of manganese ferroalloys is well established (Olsen, Tangstad and Lindstad, 2007), but kinetic information is rather scarce, especially for the SiMn process (Tranell et al., 2007; Tore-Andre Skjervheim, 1994). The absence of kinetic information makes it more difficult to understand the reduction mechanisms of MnO and SiO2. It is not clear how different raw materials affect the SiMn process. Computational modelling methods and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) were employed to investigate the interaction of a pyrite surface with thiol collectors. Modelling work was conducted in the presence and absence of water. Microcalorimetry was employed to investigate the resultant energy of interaction pyrite as a result of mineral-collector interactions. Sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX), diethyldithiocarbamate (DTC) and diethyl dithiophosphate (DTP) were investigated in this study. The results showed that the calculated surface energies and morphologies for FeS2 showed that (100) and (111) are the most stable surfaces. The morphology also indicated the appearance of the (100) and (111) surface facets and no presence of others. The calculated adsorption energies between thiol collectors and the pyrite surface were always more exothermic than the experimentally determined ones. When comparing different ligand types with the same alkyl chain length, the heat of adsorption of diethyl-DTC was greater than that of ethyl xanthate and diethyl-DTP for pyrite. Experimentally, the diethyl DTP barely adsorbed onto the pyrite surface and this may be due to a different mechanism of action. In computational calculations, water adsorption was found to reduce the reactivity of the Fe atom for the interaction with thiol collectors, and bring the adsorption energies closer to the magnitude of the experimental values. Bushveld Belco is commissioning a plant for production of electrolyte used in vanadium redox flow batteries. Owing to the source material, the electrolyte is contaminated with Fe, at concentrations up to 140 mg/L, which negatively affects battery performance. This study examined the use of ion exchange to reduce the Fe concentration to the target value of < 100 mg/L from a feed solution containing 100 g/L V in 4 M H2SO4. Four resins with possible application were identified: Puromet MTS9570, Puromet MTX7010, Puromet MTS9500, and Puromet MTC1600H. Puromet MTS9570 outperformed the other three resins in all batch experiments with respect to loading capacity and selectivity over V, and was evaluated for Fe removal in fixed-bed column loading tests. Based on these data, preliminary sizing and design of a full-scale column was undertaken. Owing to the difficulty of eluting this resin, a philosophy of discarding the resin on loading to full capacity was considered. These data revealed that, despite the high selectivity of this resin for Fe over V, it would be too expensive and impractical to use this resin for full-scale operation under such conditions. It is recommended to remove iron earlier in the flowsheet prior to generation of the 4 M H2SO4 electrolyte.

Already about one-third of South Africa&apos;s coal is mined at depths exceeding 100 metres. Almost all this mining is done by the bord and pillar method. Conventional design procedures call for ever larger pillars as depths of workings increase, resulting in the loss of large amounts of coal and reductions in productivity. Barrier pillars are in general use to ensure against large collapses. The presence of these strong pillars would allow a more efficient design of the bord and pillar layout to yield improved extraction ratios by using smaller, yielding, pillars between the bords. Knowledge of the complete load- displacement curves for such pillars is a prerequisite for the design of such a system. A 100-MN, stiff jacking system for measuring the complete load-displacement curves of pillars with cross-sections of up to 2 m X 2 m is described. The jacks are installed in a slot cut across the central plane of symmetry of a pillar, thereby ensuring that the stress distribution in the pillar during a test, especially at its contacts with the roof and floor, is identical to that caused in a similar pillar by convergence across the seam. Preliminary results in the form of complete load-displacement curves for test pillars of about 1.5 metre square section are given.

The Witbank-Middelburg Branch of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy celebrated 100 years of coal mining in the Witbank area with a function held at Douglas Colliery on the 5th December, 1989. Two hundred guests associated with the industry attended the occasion, at which Mr A.A. Sealey, Chairman of Rand Mines, Coal and Base Minerals Division, unveiled a plaque presented to the municipality.

The equilibrium nitrogen solubility in the CaO-SiO2system was studied by a slag-gas equilibration technique, in graphite crucibles at 1823K under a CO-N2 atmosphere. The nitrogen content of the slags was determined by the Kjeldahl method. A reliable technique was used to obtain an initial nitrogen content in the master slags, from the addition and pre-melting of silicon nitride. Reduction of silica by graphite was found to occur during the equilibration experiments, resulting in compositional changes of the slags. The results were extrapolated to equilibrium by kinetic evaluation of the data. The nitrogen solubility showed good agreement with the result of Suito and Sano, while Fruehan?s results were lower. However, the results of the present study do not support the maximum nitrogen solubility values found by Sano.

Base metals and platinum group metals can be collected in metallic alloy form, via a wide variety of smelting processes. The recovery, or degree of collection, of the valuable metals is a function of the extent of reduction in the furnace, which, in turn, is indicated by the fraction of iron present in the feed materials that report to the alloy. An equation has been developed that relates the recovery of various metals (such as Ni, Co, Cr, and PGMs) to the recovery of Fe. This recovery equation (for each metal) is characterized by a single parameter (K?) that can either be empirically fitted to the data, or expressed in terms of the equilibrium constant and the ratios of the activity coefficients involved. Data from a number of varied DC arc furnace campaigns are presented to illustrate this behaviour.

Some aspects of the mechanical behaviour of chromium-containing dual-phase 3CR12 steel were investigated as a function of the temperature and strain rate. The yield stress was found to depend on both the temperature and the strain rate, with no substantial differences between the longitudinal and the transverse directions. The strain-rate sensitivity decreased with increasing temperature. The yield stress could be presented as a function of a temperature-strain-rate parameter. Impact test results showed substantial differences between the energy absorption of the transverse and longitudinal specimens above the ductile-brittle transition temperature. Changes in energy absorption with temperature were gradual for specimens in both orientations, and the transition from ductile to brittle behaviour occurred between 373 and 173 K. Strain rates ahead of the tip of notches with different geometries were calculated and measured experimentally.
