This study advances the use of elemental sulfur in structural materials by demonstrating its value in bonding high-strength, well-graded basalt aggregates to form sulfur-basalt concretes. Sulfur is an excellent bonding agent, and the strength of a thermoplastic sulfur-aggregate mixture depends, to a large degree, on the strength and grain-size distribution of the aggregate used. A 3-cubic-foot, electrically powered mixer with heat applied to the barrel was used to mix the sulfur and aggregate. Sulfur content of several mixtures was varied to obtain the best workability with a minimum of sulfur in excess of that necessary to fill the voids. The average grain sizes and grain-size distributions were also varied to determine their effects on strength. Unconfined compression tests of forty-five 6-by l2-inch cylinders yielded average strendths of 3,348 psi to 10,398 psi. The highest strength single cylinder was 10,717 psi. The cylinders were tested from 24 hours to 6 days after pouring; after 24 hours the rise in strength was very slight. From the results obtained it appears that sulfur can be a useful construction material. An evaluation was made of a high-vacuum application for sulfur concrete. Sulfur has a high vapor pressure at elevated temperatures, 50° to 100° C; consequently, significant losses by sublimation can be expected. At lower temperatures the losses are not significant; however, this factor will limit its use at a higher temperature.

This study forms a part of Bureau of Mines continuing research on thermal fragmentation of rocks. The potential of internal heating techniques for rock fragmentation is discussed. A concept of rock fragmentation with rapid inter¬nal heating of a localized inner volume of rock is advanced The energy required for rock fragmentation is made available by creating a required vol¬ume of localized heating. The fragmentation of rock using the proposed method is analyzed and qualitatively compared with the results of experiments with Charcoal granite, Dresser basalt, and Sioux Quartzite. High frequency dielec¬tric heating below 100 MHz is used in the study as an example to examine the working of the concept. The selection of operating conditions for the experi¬mental heating is explained. Fragmentation of Charcoal granite and Dresser basalt test rock blocks is achieved for localized heating below 550° C. The heated volume required for fragmentation is observed to be less than 2 percent of the test block volume and the electrical energy consumption is in the order of 3.5 to 6 5 kwhr/m3 The method offers a possibility for in situ fragmenta¬tion of rocks, favorable for internal heating. The method is highly dependent on rock properties governing internal heat generation The efficiency of dielectric heating in the experimental study is observed to increase with increasing dielectric loss of the rock material, ranging from about 10 percent in Sioux. Primary lead is produced in the United States by the pyrometallurgical smelting of lead sulfide (galena, PbS) concentrates, which poses sulfur dioxide and lead air pollution control problems. The Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated an alternative hydrometallurgy procedure that does not generate gaseous sulfur oxides and diminishes the potential for the escape of lead into the atmosphere. The procedure involves leaching galena flotation concentrates with ferric chloride (FeC13) solution to obtain lead chloride (PbC12) and elemental sulfur as expressed by the following chemical reaction: PbS + 2FeC13 ? PbC12 + 2FeCl2 + S°. At 100° C, over 99 pct of the PbS in the concentrate is converted to PbCl2 in less than 15 min. The leach solution, composed of brine (NaCl) containing slightly more than the theoretical required amount of FeC13, dissolves the PbC12 as it is formed, leaving a residue of elemental sulfur plus gangue. High-purity PbC12 (>99.9 pct) crystallizes from the leach filtrate on cooling and is electrolyzed in a low-temperature, fused-salt cell to obtain corroding-grade metal (>99.94 pct Pb). Spent leach solution (FeC12) is regenerated for further use by reaction with the chlorine obtained in the electrolysis of lead chloride. Other values, such as Ag, Cu, Zn, and S°, are recovered by additional treatment of either the leach solution or leach residue.

Ultraviolet-visible and infrared emission spectra from propagating methane-coal-dust-inhibitor mixtures have been obtained in a 0.2-by 0.2¬by 5.3-m vertical duct over a range of flame speeds from 2 to 100 m/sec. Results serve as a basis for the design and evaluation of thermal radiation detectors for triggered barriers that suppress ongoing mine explosions. Of particular significance is the large continua superimposed on the methane-air spectra when small amounts of coal dust are present and the variation of emissivity with infrared (IR) wavelength in dust flames. In conjunction with the spectral measurements, studies of flame speed, particle size, gas sampling plus thermodynamics, and dust sampling are presented and discussed in order to gain insight into the more fundamental aspects of propagating explosions. Sampling results have shown that only a near-stoichiometric amount of dust is consumed in the flames studied even though initial concentrations are five times stoichiometric. Difficulty in propagating coal-dust inhibitor flames of realistic mine characteristics in a cold-walled laboratory duct has been encountered. A simplified analysis of the flame zone utilizing spectral and sampling results indicates that the stability of slowly propagating flames is more dependent upon thermal radiation than upon convection losses to the walls. It is predicted that thermal radiation losses will make any measurements of coal dust burning velocities, "quenching diameters," or flammability limits more apparatus dependent than those corresponding to gaseous fuels.

In the context of the following report, an hazardous location can be described as any industrial area in which flammable or explosive gases, vapors, and dusts can be encountered. When electrical apparatus is used in such hazardous atmospheres, the chance of a dust or gas ignition is ever present. Consequently, in an effort to reduce the ignition hazard, several protection systems have been devised. Such systems are termed electrical hazard reduction techniques. The most widely accepted and used of these, the explosion-proof enclosure, is the principal subject of this report. However, other techniques are briefly mentioned. Hazard reduction techniques used in coal mine atmospheres (which can contain methane, coal dust, and air mixtures) are classified as Group I. The explosion-proof enclosure commonly used in mines is defined by the USBM Schedule 2G as a device that can contain internal explosions of methane-air mixtures without undergoing damage or excessive distortion and without an ignition of a surrounding methane-air mixture or discharge of flame. (100) Internationally, the definition remains the same except the words "discharge of flame" are not present. (4,5,31,42,52,76,102) The latter description often refers to flame-proof enclosure construction, but the terms "flameproof: and "explosion-proof" commonly have the same connotation. These enclosures which may not be vapor tight, are distinguished by heavy-wall cast or welded construction and bolted or threaded close fitting flanges.

This paper describes all occurrences of barite in Arizona that were known or reported to the authors. The history, ownership, production, and geologic setting are discussed for most of the deposits. The uses and specifications of product grades are briefly discussed. Seventy-five deposits were examined in 9 of the 14 counties of the State. The descriptions are given under county headings. No occurrences were reported in the four northeastern counties of Coconino, Navajo, Apache, and Greenlee, nor in Santa Cruz in the southern part of the State. From about half of the deposits examined, 55 samples were taken; of these, 45 were for chemical analysis, and 8 larger samples, ranging from 100 to 350 pounds, for beneficiation tests. A 30-ton bulk sample was taken for pilot-plant tests. Bench-scale flotation tests of the eight samples employing several different procedures and reagent combinations yielded marketable-grade barite products with barite recoveries ranging from 60 to 97 percent. Five of the samples contained enough fluorspar to warrant its recovery. Acid-grade concentrates, which accounted for fluorspar recoveries of 45 to 70 percent, were obtained from three of these ores. Batch laboratory tests of a representative portion of the 30-ton bulk sample revealed that acid-grade fluorspar and high-grade barite concentrates could be recovered. Results of the laboratory and continuous pilot-plant tests of this ore will be presented in a separate report.

U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine mineral resources and resource potential in and adjacent to the North fork Smith RARE II study area. Most mineral resources identified in this area are in laterites, highly-weathered residual soil zones. In the RARE II area, resources of nickel, cobalt, chromium, and magnesium were identified at 15 laterite properties and chromium resources at one chromite mine. Other commodities include copper, gold, silver, and mercury (fig. 1). Approximately 1,100 lode and 1,200 placer claims have been located in or adjacent to the area. Most placer claims are for literites. There are no patented claims or mineral leases. Forty laterite deposits on 15 ,properties within the RARE II area (fig. 2) contain about 16 million tons of identified marginal reserves and subeconomic resources containing nickel, cobalt, chromium, an magnesium (table 1). Most deposits have keen explored and are currently claimed. California Nickel Corporation is developing laterites on Gasguet Mountain, within and adjacent to the southeastern and western parts of the study area. If this project proceeds to production, a laterite processing plant on Gasquet Mountain would enhance the minability of other deposits in the study area. The Climax, PFM, DF, and Stone Corral properties (fig. 1, nos. 1, 6, 9, and 23) have deposits of sufficient tonnage and grade to attract mining interest; resources at these properties are in and adjacent to the RARE II area.

The location, features, quality, and extent of iron ore deposits are evaluated in this Bureau of Mines report. The results of pioneer beneficiation on Wyoming taconites and their success are discussed along with developments in the iron-ore mining industry, markets, and economics. Market potential, transportation, resource developments, taxation, cost of iron ore enterprises, and the future of Wyoming iron resources are evaluated. Although occurrences of iron ores in Wyoming were known prior to 1870, early production to 1900 was as a nonferrous metallurgical flux and as mineral pigment for paints. In 1901, the Hartville-Sunrise hematite deposits were available to the Western iron and steel industry and in 1962, the first western taconite operation was placed in production at Atlantic City, Wyo. This investigation disclosed the probability of other large iron deposits in Wyoming. Taconite in the Bradley Peak area of the Seminoe Mountains has a potentiality of 100 million tons; that in the Owl Creek Mountains may prove very large also. Pioneer beneficiation testing has been included, and results have been generally encouraging. Research continues on the large titaniferous magnetite deposits of Albany County, Wyo. At present high-density titaniferous magnetite is being mined and processed at Iron Mountain for heavy-aggregate and as a sized coating for underwater pipelines. Ample mineral raw materials needed for mining and processing Wyoming iron ores are available. Investments for iron-ore processing plants will generally be large, particularly for taconite and titaniferous magnetite.

[Certain chapters of the tentative document entitled, "Test Requirements for instruments & Apparatus to be Considered for MESA Intrinsically Safe Certification" are evaluated and supporting data are presented on certain key issues with the purpose of helping the regulatory agency in improving the above document. The subjects discussed in detail are: hot wire ignition with W and BeCu wires; the most sensitive methane-air :and propane air ratio; the ignition limits for inductive-resistive circuits in 8.3°; methane-air mixtures in the 24-OV, 100 mH-2 [ ]H range, the resistive ignition limit as a special case when L ? 0; the capacitive-resistive ignition limit representing a four ,dimensional problem is analyzed and discussed in general and the variation of the ignition limit using Vo and/or r2 as a parameter are determined experimentally. The ignition limit is also determined for the [r1 ,~ r2] = 0 case ("capacitor alone") and for the most dangerous capacitive resistive circuit combination. The ignition limits are below the limits proposed in the document. A survey of the different factors influencing the ignition is made as to their suitability to provide a constant safety factor. It is shown that a constant safety factor cannot be achieved. The best method for applying a safety factor appears to be the increase of initial pressure or use of other gas mixture. The revision of the safety factor concept and ignition limit curves is recommended.]

Available statistics show that the demands of the American chemical industry for sodium sulphate have been increasing slightly in recent years. The supply from domestic sources, particularly In the form of byproduct salt cake from the acid manufacturers, has been tending to decrease due to the growing manufacture of synthetic acid. Both hydrochloric and nitric acids are being synthesized from their elements. The natural result has been that a smaller amount of salt cake is available. Simultaneously, the expansion of the Kraft paper industry, especially in the South, has brought about greater demand for sodium sulphate in that section. This dean is being met by domestic byproduct salt cake, by imported German sodium sulphate made from potash waste liquors, and by favorable situated domestic deposits of Glauber salts and tile anhydrous salt, thenardite. No shortage of natural sodium sulphate exists in the United States, but usually such deposits occur in semiarid regions far removed from transportation facilities and from markets. Moreover, the major portion of the natural deposits is Glauber salt or mirabilite (Na2SO4 ? 10H20), which must be dried or dehydrated in order to meet consumer requirements. The water of hydration represents, roughly, 55 percent of tae total weight of the crude salts and therefore has a very important influence on transportation costs. In marry instances the cost of getting, even the dehydrated product to market is the deciding economic factor. Therefore, the recovery oil production of anhydrous sodium sulphate from plant-.waste liquors or from natural brines of suitable composition might be economically feasible. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, at its nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station, New Brunswick, N. J., has, for a number of rears, been investigating the commercial possibilities of treating the complex saline mineral polyhalite (K2SO4?NgSO4?2CaSO4?2H20) for the recovery of potash and magnesia. Certain proposed processes (1, 2, 3, 4)4/ yield waste liquors that contain the bulk of the magnesium and sulphate originally combined as magnesium sulphate in the polyhalite molecule. Hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) affects industrial workers exposed to long term hand-transmitted vibration from powered-tools. Peripheral neuropathy is a major component of the symptom complex of HAVS. Long term exposure to vibration causes myelin damage in peripheral nerves and reduces nerve conduction velocities in rats1. This study addresses the effects of acute vibration at constant acceleration of 49 m/s2 on myelinated fibers in peripheral nerves in Sprague-Dawley male rats using the ‘rat-tail vibration model,’ which simulates hand-transmitted vibration2. Methods Male Sprague-Dawley rats (~300 g) were assigned to vibration groups: 1 hr continuous vibration at 60 Hz; 4 hr continuous exposure at frequencies of 30, 60, 120 or 800 Hz; immediate and 24 hr following a 4-hr cumulative exposure of continuous and intermittent vibration at 60 Hz. Unanesthetized rats were restrained in cages on a nonvibrating platform with their tails placed on a vibrating stage accelerated by a B&K motor type 4809 and vibrated. Intermittent vibration was delivered in bouts of 10 min vibration alternating with 5 min rest periods repeated over 6 hr. Sham controls were restrained without vibration. After vibration exposure, the rats were anaesthetized, and the ventral nerve trunks from the proximal tail segment 7 were fixed in glutaraldehyde, embedded in epon-araldite and sectioned at 0.5 µm thickness and stained with toludine-blue for morphological quantitative analysis. The total number of myelinated axons in each cross-section of the nerve was counted using the Image J software. Myelin damage was identified by focal increase in area and intensity of toludine-blue staining and unraveling of the myelin sheath. Statistical analysis for comparing sham and the different vibration groups was done using Dunnett’s test. Animal treatment and all surgical procedures were approved by the institutional review board and compiled with the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act. Results The rats tolerated continuous vibration very well and exhibited no behavioral signs of stress. When exposed to intermittent vibration, there was increased vocalization, a startle reflex at the beginning of each bout of vibration, deposition of porphyrin around the eyes and transient hypersensitivity to touch.

The practical concern of economic minability of large, high-grade manganese nodule deposits in the northeast Pacific Ocean is addressed in this Bureau of Mines report. Principal objectives are to (1) estimate tonnage and grade of deposits with significant potential and (2) describe and estimate profitability of operations designed to mine and process deposits with greatest apparent potential. Analysis of data from over 800 ship stations identified three areas for detailed study. Average metal contents of these areas range from 1.30 to 1.45 wt pet nickel, 1.00 to 1.24 wt pct copper, 0.21 to 0.26 wt pct cobalt, and 26.8 to 27.8 wt pct manganese. Estimated recoverable nodule resources are 67.0, 66.9, and 148.8 million dry metric tons (t). A system to mine, transport, and process nodules from the three sites is described and costed. Although hypothetical, the system utilizes hydraulic mining and Cuprion (Kennecott) processing, which have been successfully tested at pilot scale. Nickel, copper, and cobalt are the three primary products, but ferromanganese is a considered option. Estimated capital requirements are approximately $1.5 to $1.7 billion for three-metal production. If ferromanganese were recovered, an additional investment of about $130 million would be required. Operating costs range from $71 to $83 per dry metric ton of nodules without manganese, and from $103 to $123 per dry metric ton with ferromanganese. Discounted cash flow analyses predict low returns, ranging from 2.7 to 5.2 pct with ferromanganese and from 4.1 to 6.0 pct without.

Wildcat strikes in the Appalachian coal fields, primarily in West Virginia, have resulted in an estimated 4.5 million ton loss in coal production during July and through the first week in August. Since then, the strike intensified further, and on August 9, nearly all of West Virginia's 60,000 miners were off the job with another 10,000 miners on strike in eastern Kentucky. The Bureau of Mines estimates that West Virginia's coal output is currently (8/9) eight million tons below last year when the state produced 108 million tons. West Virginia, the Nation's second largest coal producer of coal behind Kentucky, has not failed to mine over 100 million tons a year since 1938. At the end of the second week in August, nearly all coal miners in West Virginia remained out. The strike is a protest against a cutback in union health and retirement benefits. An announcement June 23 about the United Mine Worker's health and retirement fund precipitated the strike, Fund directors said that because of inflation and production losses caused by earlier wildcat strikes and the severe winter, miners would have to pay the first $250 of hospital costs and 40 percent of doctor bills, up to $500 a year. Previously, the funds paid all hospital and doctor bills. According to the West Virginia Coal Association each day of the strike in West Virginia results in a loss of coal production of 500,000 tons, a loss of $3.8 million in miners wages and $1 million in contributions to the UMWA's health and retirement fund.

Mercury, or quicksilver as it is often called, has many applications in modern technology. Used principally in electrical apparatus, industrial contol instruments, insecticides and fungicides, electrolytic preparation of chlorine and caustic soda, chemical processes, pharmaceuticals, and dental preparations, the liquid metal has unusual properties that make it a preferred material for many industrial uses. United States consumption of mercury during the past 40 years shows a rising trend. In all except 4 years, U.S. production has been less than the domestic requirement, and imports, principally from Spain, Italy, and Mexico, have supplied most of the deficit. After World War II, domestic output decreased rapidly until 1950, when it was the lowest in the 100 years covered by production records. Higher mercury prices since 1950 have reversed the decline in domestic output and reduced the gap between U.S. production and consumption. Domestic output in 1958 was the highest in peacetime since 1883; however, the nation still imported 28 percent of its mercury requirements from 1950 to 1960 the price of mercury was high as a result of industrial applications of the mercury cell, the impact of the cold war and the Korean war, and the Government stockpiling program. The stockpiling program, in effect, put a floor under mercury prices even though only 9,428 flasks of domestic mercury went into the stockpile under the original program which ran from July 1954 to December 31, 1957. Under an extension of the program, an additional 17,463 flasks was purchased.

A preliminary survey was performed to investigate the impregnation of relatively weak, porous volcanic tuff and a relatively strong, dense sandstone with five different monomers. Increases in compressive strengths by factors of 2 to 5, and elastic moduli by factors of 2 to 3.5, are reported for natural rocks (tuff., sandstone, dacite), which were impregnated with five monomers (methyl methacrylate; chlorostyrene; 40 percent TMPTMA-60 percent styrene; 40 percent TMPTMA-60 percent chlorostyrene; 60 percent polyester-40 percent styrene); polymerization took place after monomers were forced into the rock. Impregnation was performed (1) by pressurizing rock specimens from one end, or (2) by a vacuum-soak operation. Polymerization was accomplished by either radiation or chemical initiation techniques. Strength improvement is dependent on (1) the type of monomer used, (2) the amount of polymer incorporated into the rock, and (3) the degree of water saturation of the rock. Water saturation strongly reduced the effectiveness of the method for the polymer systems tested. The more viscous monomers (for example, 60 percent polyester-40 percent styrene) were more effective in displacing the water from the rock, and compressive strengths of wet rock were doubled with these systems. Water saturations ranging from 25 to 100 percent of maximum saturation gave essentially identical results. Further tests on other types of mine rock; including shale and coal, are planned. Water-compatible polymer systems should be developed, or present systems should be suitably modified. For application to tunnel stabilization, design studies evaluating the improvement in rock strength and its influence on the support system are also recommended.

This work was done to develop methods for increasing the yields and purity of vanadium prepared by bomb reduction of vanadium compounds . Compounds reduced were V₂ 05 , V203 , VC , and VC13 . Sodium , calcium , and magnesium were used as reductants . Variables considered included reductant form , bomb size , pressure during reaction , method of ignition , and the use of slag fluidizing additives . It was concluded that yields of 85 to 90 percent can be effected by the calcium reduction of V205 in reactors measuring as much as 14 inches in diameter and 60 inches in height . Optimum charge composition included V₂05 , 65 percent excess calcium , and 0.4 moles sulfur per mole vanadium . Purity of the vanadium produced in large reactors varied from 99.5 to 99.8 percent . The higher purity metal , depending upon the amounts of interstitial impurities present , was usually cold ductile . Although high yields of up to 99.5 percent can be effected by bomb reduction of VC1 , the high pressures developed in the bombs and attack of the reactor walls by the byproduct chloride slags discourages this method of preparing vanadium . It was found that significant purification of impure regulus metal occurred when it was hydrided , crushed , acid leached , and vacuum dehydrided . Metal so treated can readily be converted to ductile sheet . A cost estimate based on the production of 100 tons of vanadium per year was prepared . It was concluded that pure ductile vanadium could be produced for approximately $ 20.00 per pound .

The total number of petroleum refineries in the United States decreased during 1951, while the total crude-oil charging capacity continued to increase. There were 350 refineries as of January 1, 1952, compared with 357 a year earlier, according to the annual Bureau of Mines capacity survey. A gain of 369,241 barrels in daily refinery crude through-put capacity during 1951 brings the total to 7,332,885 barrels daily. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude-oil was 20,951 barrels daily, an increase of 1,445 barrels daily over the previous year. Capacity added in the Texas Gulf district accounted for 36 percent of the total increase; the Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky district, 23 percent; the East Coast district, 19 percent; the Oklahoma-Kansas district, 12 percent; and the Texas Inland district, 11 percent. The California district was the only one reporting a decline in crude-oil refining capacity, the total being 14,200 barrels daily below the previous year. Reported as under construction January 1, 1952, was an additional crude-oil capacity of 282,680 barrels daily, an increase of 77 percent over the January 1, 1951, total of 160,100 barrels. The capacity now building is for the expansion of existing facilities, since no new plants had been begun as of the first of the year. Three or four companies have plans to build refineries in the Williston Basin area of North Dakota, but no definite locations or dates when construction will begin have been announced.

This report describes the development and operation by the Bureau of Mines of a pilot plant designed for using high-volatile A bituminous coal-in-water suspensions as a source of preheated coal and superheated steam in the pressure gasification of coal with oxygen. Figure 1 on page 2 is a block diagram of the integrated gasification process, in which a total of 70 tons of coal was fed from slurry and gasified. The present work included (1) development of equipment and methods both for mixing pulverized coal and water to produce slurry and for pumping and metering the slurry at gasification pressure; (2) development of equipment for heating the flowing slurry and, because slurry that can be pumped produces more steam than is necessary as a gasification reactant, developing equipment for removing and metering the excess steam; and (3) demonstration of the process under actual gasifier operating conditions, at a coal rate of about 800 pounds per hour and gasification pressures in the range 100 to 300 pounds per square inch gage. By using the forced-convection principle, a flow of slurry made from a caking, high-volatile A bituminous coal can be continuously heated to 600° F. in a coil-type heater. The flow rate and concentration of the slurry and the temperature gradient along the length of the heating coil must be closely controlled. In a radiant-type heater, involuntary reductions in flow rate, even momentary, can lead to coking and plugging of the heater coil.

The Yellow Pine zinc-lead mine, situated about 3-1/2 miles northwest of Goodsprings, Clark County, Nev., was explored by core drilling during the fall of 1942 and the summer and fall of 1944 by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey. The Yellow Pine district was located in 1855. The original claims covering the Yellow Pine mine were located in the following years: Rover, 1892; Hilo, 1897; Bybee, 1900; Radio and Como, 1906. The mine was operated by the Yellow Pine Mining Co. from 1906 to 1929. This company was dissolved in 1935. At a later date, S. E. Yount and the Security First National Bank of Los Angeles, Calif., acquired ownership of the mine. Since 1939, the mine has been operated in a small way by leasers. Production has been at least 175,000 tons averaging about 10 percent lead and 25 percent zinc, with a gross yield of $5,785,174. Virtually all ore produced by this mine consisted chiefly of oxidized zinc and lead minerals and came from long, pipelike shoots in the 100-foot thick Yellow Pine limestone. Ore shoots are sharply defined; elsewhere, the limestone is nearly barren. Numerous faults cut the mine into blocks. Ore is now mined in an open stope, but in the past, large tonnages wore mined in stopes by square-set methods. Ore produced recently was shipped direct to smelters unprocessed; in the past, it was milled by gravity and produced separate lead and zinc concentrates.
