Brazil and Colombia have large reserves of coal, those reserves in Brazil are located predominantly in the south and Colombia the main reserves are located in the north. Despite the relative ease of exploitation, these resources have been underestimated as a source of energy. Currently, these countries are developing projects and partnerships aiming to qualify this mineral resource, adding quality to the final product of the processing plants. In this scenario the processing of Brazilian and Colombian coal in flotation columns appears as a promising alternative, having been successful in mineral systems containing fine particles This paper aims to study the overall process of column flotation for a specific Brazilian coal and a specific Colombian coal. The material used in this study consists of fine coal from Brazil (Copelmi) and Colombia (Cerrejon). The objective is to recover carbonaceous matter and reduce the ash and contaminants grade. The two coals were floated using a negative bias in a 5 cm diameter conventional flotation column of 5 m high. Flotation parameter investigated included air velocity in the range 0.6 to 1.5 cm/s. For all runs, a constant negative bias of -0.25 cm/s and a pulp concentration of 8% w/w were used. For Cerrejón coal, 300 g/ton of frother and 907 g/ton of collector was used, whereas for Copelmi coal, 600 g/ton of frother and 1815 g/ton of collector was employed. The frother was a commercial Aerofroth 65 (AF65), whereas the collector was Kerosene. For the Colombian coal, in general, yield, organic recovery, ash recovery and water recovery decreased with the increasing air rate. However, for Brazilian coal the air rate had no significant effect. For Colombian coal, the highest yield (60% w/w) and organic recovery (69% w/w) were obtained at the lowest air rate (0,6 cm/s). Gold extraction using iodide leaching from refractory carbonaceous gold ores was studied. Thermodynamic analysis of iodide leaching chemistry had been carried out. Eh-pH diagram of Au-I2-I--H2O leaching system showed that the coordinating active forms from iodides were I3- and I-, while the major coordinate compound formed during iodide leaching was AuI-. For leaching parameters optimization, technological parameters such as I2 concentration, I2 :I- ratio, oxidation assisting agents, liquid/solid ratio, and leaching duration were studied. The leaching results showed that the average Au leaching rate reached 91% and 92% for oxidized ore and roasted primary ore respectively. Leaching process proceeded in weekly acidic or neutral slurry at ambient temperature; the leaching duration was 4 hours. After that gold was extracted from the pregnant liquor by activated carbon adsorption ? desorption ? electrowinning process. Gold recovery was over 93% in the adsorption process, while the gold recovery in electrowinning process was about 95%, provided that the initial gold concentration is 40mg/L or larger. For iodine regeneration it is enough to add hydrogen peroxide in excess into the filtrate after gold electrowinning, all the iodides existing in the solution in any forms would be precipitated in the form of elemental iodine.

Grinding is one of the most important and expensive steps in mineral processing allocating about 70% of the total energy in the plants. Nowadays, for optimizing the energy consumption in these equipments, the rock behavior and its size distribution during the crushing have been normally predicted using selection and breakage functions to be able to optimally model and design grinding circuits. For this purpose, the case of Miduk copper mine in Kerman province, Iran was studied. The samples were taken from primary ball mills feed and were subject to screen analysis to achieve uniform sizes. Then, selection and breakage functions were determined at the different grinding times in laboratorial ball mill. Finally, ore size distribution in different grinding times was estimated using MATLAB software

Since several years in Poland a huge demands on mineral aggregates occur, for the reason of intensive development of housing and road industry, as well as industrial building. Limitations in re-sources of broken aggregates in Central and Northern parts of Poland cause, that both the non-waste production of aggregates with high quality and the production of alternative aggregates from recycling gain greater importance, nowadays. It entails increase in demands for crushing devices, which are easy and reliable in operating as well as inexpensive and enabling to obtain a good quality products. Jaw crusher, regarded as the most spread in Polish industry, meet these requirements, however, their crucial disadvantage is a large content of irregular grains in crushing products. Numerous investigations show, that the shape of grains is a significant feature of aggregates, which influences on durability and quality of produced concretes. The advantage of jaw crushers is their easy operation, low price as well as low amount of dusts (wastes) generated in comminution products in comparison to other types of crushers (i.e. hammer crushers).

It is known that an addition of rigid particles into a fluid medium changes the flow field. Therefore, the rheological behavior of suspensions will be hardly Newtonian, such as their continuum phase. This phenomena was studied by Einstein in 1906 (Einstein, 1956) for the single case of spherical particles in a continuum liquid of a very dilute suspension. The final analysis applied for suspensions was derived from the evaluation of the behavior of ideal gases, finding a simple expression for the viscosity of the dispersion. All the following works about the hydrodynamics of suspensions at low and high solid contents was based in the Einstein´s model. For clay minerals suspensions where the physical and chemical properties of the particles are complex, it was found that the Einstein´s model is not a good approximation, even so for the most dilute dispersions. The present paper shows a new approximation that describes the non-Newtonian behavior of the suspensions of clays, and the attempt of understand how the different fine sizes, shapes and physico-chemical properties of clay particle surfaces give specific characteristics of plasticity, viscosity or visco elasticity to suspensions. "Selective comminution (SC) is beneficial for the treatment of primary raw materials, especially if it is utilized in the pre-concentration process. Pre-concentration processes are applied in mineral processing to relieve subsequent processes and to achieve a higher efficiency. SC is also a promising method for the treatment of low-grade ores and waste dumps. With SC, various components can be separated such as valuable minerals from waste, ore from wall rock and different ore varieties within a deposit. SC is a property of a comminution system and leads either to a preferred crack propagation in one component (called preferential breakage) or to a preferred crack propagation along the grain boundaries (called interfacial breakage). SC results from different comminution behavior of various components in the feed material. For mechanical comminution, the preferential breakage seems to be the most important case of SC. Hereby SC generates only the difference in the particle size which can finally be used as a sorting parameter. A sorting process which uses SC depends on three parts: the feed material, the comminution machine and the separation machine. The feed material defines the potential for SC. Differences in properties like strength, toughness and density which are related to comminution are often used. The comminution machine has to exploit this potential. The extent of the exploitation can be influenced by the machine design, material and operational parameters. After SC, the various components are still combined in the product. So ultimately, a separation machine is needed. At preferential breakage, a simple screening machine can be used. The basics about SC will be presented at first. This contains relationships between material properties, the kind of loading in the comminution machine and the SC effect. These basics can be used for example to exploit a potential to SC for a pre-concentration step or to avoid the SC for a higher efficiency of subsequent processes. Based on recent investigations with impact load, the influence of the important parameters compressive strength, density, particle size and impact velocity to the SC will be shown, using examples of lead-zinc ore comminution and fluorspar processing."

In the present work, the flotation behaviours of zircon, rutile and ilmenite using sodium oleate as collector in absence and presence of depressants were thoroughly investigated. The maximum in the flotation recovery of any of the above minerals falls within similar pH ranges. A range of inorganic and polymer depressants were examined in order to improve the separation of zircon from rutile and ilmenite. Optimum values of conditioning pH and depressant concentration to achieve maximum recovery and best selective floatability of zircon were obtained. Selective flotation of zircon from Ti-bearing minerals was anticipated from single mineral experiments under different pH values, depressant and collector conditions.

"Since the 1970?s we have seen a marked corporate response in terms of the environment. In part this has come from regulation but it has largely come from stakeholders and the community. Rising expectations have in general been met. We now see a similar trend towards sustainability. At the same time, the importance of mining to the share market has decreased drastically and with that decrease has come the requirement for the mining sector to show returns similar in manner to other sectors. While rationalisation can achieve some progress towards these goals, the long-term requirement is for innovation, as it always has been. This paper looks to the logical goal of innovation within a sustainable mining framework and targets the removal of the desired metal values with minimal environmental footprint. It is suggested that broad ranging alliances will be necessary, particularly amongst the R&D suppliers, to achieve this goal. Industry will need to take an active role given the recent global restructuring.THE MARCH TO SUSTAINABILITYSince the 1970?s there has been an increasing corporate response on environmental matters. We have moved from matters environmental being issues relevant only to minority groups through a series of attitudinal changes by management. Whilst there have always been examples of excellent environmental performance, for many in the 70?s spending money on improving the environment beyond some minimal level was seen as a distraction from production or treated in a similar way to donations to the community. There is little of that attitude these days, as most mining companies have long since regarded the environment as a core business direction. Indeed, for some years one could note an escalation in matters of environmental reporting to the extent that the environmental performance of companies is now very public. In some cases, NGOs have even been invited to help certify and audit the reporting standards. Similarly with health & safety.There is now a rising expectation on the part of the community that social matters will also be given the same level of support as health, safety and the environment. This time around it would appear that the mining industry is at the leading edge of sustainability. The Global Mining Initiative (Global Mining, 2002) and the contributions to the Rio World Summit on Sustainable Development (Rio +10, 2002) suggest that sustainability is being taken very seriously by the mining industry. For sustainability it is convenient to use the Brundtland (1987) definition. This definition has widespread acceptance with governments, industry, environmental groups, financial institutions and individuals as a direction against which our activities and plans can be measured."

The selectivity of polymer adsorption in mixed mineral systems is the basis for polymer depression of gangue minerals in flotation. Effective polymer depressants not only reduce gangue mineral recovery, they also have minimal effect on the recovery of the value phase, presumably through targeted adsorption on the gangue phase, and minimal uptake on the value phase. Traditionally, polymer depressant design has been guided by single mineral phase adsorption tests, with affinity and maximum adsorbed amount determined for gangue and value phases separately. However, there is a need to determine the actual extent of adsorption on the gangue phase while in the presence of the value phase. In this work, we report on the development of in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging for determination of polymer depressant coverage and morphology on mixed mineral surfaces. Our group has previously used AFM imaging on single minerals to connect adsorbed layer characteristics with bubble-particle attachment and flotation outcomes. Two sample types were used to test the methodology: (i) a mixture of two crushed/ground minerals encased in resin; and (ii) a composite mineral sample containing macroscopic regions of three different mineral phases. The samples have been used to probe the selective uptake of two modified dextrin polymers (octenyl succinate anhydride dextrin). AFM images acquired in situ (while all surfaces are immersed in the same polymer solution) of each mineral phase have revealed the natural selectivity of the polymer for the mineral surfaces. In all cases, the polymers adsorb on the all mineral surfaces present, but to a varying extent.

Wet processes are commonly used in coal preparation field home and abroad. Dry coal cleaning technology is very necessary in China because more than 2/3 of coal resources deposited in arid areas, which are difficult to separate coal with wet processes. A particular interest of this article is the discussion of separation research development of dry coal cleaning in China, such as an air dense medium fluidized bed (ADMFB) beneficiation technology, a compound dry (pneumatic) separation technology and a triboelectrostatic separation technology. The fundament and importance of dry coal cleaning methods above were introduced. On the basis of analyzing parameters which influence the performance of separators, including that of structure, technologic and operating, the separation research status of dry coal cleaning methods, especially the ADMFB beneficiation technology, were discussed and reviewed. The recent developments, especially the fluidized bed beneficiation for <6mm fine coal with an external energy assisted, including a vibrated fluidized bed and a magnetically fluidized bed, and the triboelectrostatic separation for <1mm fine coal are also introduced. The study and application results in China show that dry coal cleaning technologies can efficiently beneficiate different coals with different sizes. The ADMFB can separate >6mm coarse coal with an E value of 0.05~0.08, the external energy assisted fluidized bed can separate <6mm fine coal with an E value of 0.07~0.09, the triboelectrostatic technology can efficiently separate <1mm fine coal, and the compound dry separation technology can efficiently separate >3mm coal with a easy washability. The dry coal cleaning provides an efficient and lower cost clean approach for coals distributed in arid areas.

"Gas dispersion properties of sodium salts of 6, 12 and 18-carbon fatty acids (hexanoic, lauric and oleic acid) were investigated as a function of pH. A strong effect of pH was observed on gas dispersion properties of fatty acids. At high pH for 12 and 18 carbon fatty acids, at which these surfactants formed a true solution, the gas dispersion properties were similar to those of MIBC. In the case of sodium hexanoate, which has a much higher solubility than the longer chain fatty acids and therefore does not form precipitates, the gas dispersion properties of this surfactant were strongly enhanced in the acidic pH range, where hexanoic acid was fully associated. This result is an indication that undissociated hexanoic acid is much more surface-active than anionic hexanoate. Only a small effect of the surfactant chain length on gas dispersion properties of the tested reagents was observed. The measured critical coalescence concentration (CCC95) values increase slightly by decreasing chain length and range from 5.8 x 10-5 mol/L (17.7 mg/L) for sodium oleate to 7.2 x 10-5 mol/L (16 mg/L) for sodium laurate at pH 10 and 1.9 x 10-4 mol/L (26 mg/L) for sodium hexanoate at pH 3.7. These are compared to CCC95 of MIBC, which is measured to be 8 x 10-5 mol/L (8 mg/L). The soluble molecular species were recognized as the most effective species in preventing bubble coalescence."

"The analysis on influencing factors of hydraulic conditions in fine hematite flocculation, such as stirring speed, stirring time and axial distance of particle size and fractal dimension of floc was investigated. Furthermore, response surface methodology(RSM) has been applied according to the Box-Benhnken center-united experimental design principle to optimize parameters of hydraulic conditions as a response index to indicate the fractal dimension of floc. The results show that when the agitation speed is 900r/min, the axial distance is 2.0cm, and the stirring time is 3.0min, the particle size reaches the maximum value of 35.44µm and the fractal dimension is 1.6594. The interaction between the axial distance and the stirring speed is highly significant, but the interaction with the stirring time is not obvious. The experimental data and model predications match well, which indicates that the established model has high accuracy and practicability. INTRODUCTION With the exhaustion of iron ore resources that are easy to be mined and the vigorous demand for iron and steel, the exploitation and utilization of fine-grained embedded iron ore resources have drawn attention from the industry and the government [1~2]. Flocculation flotation is one of the effective methods for separation and recovery of fine granular minerals. In 1975, the method was first applied and succeeded in Tilden Concentrator, USA. Flocculation and desliming became the key technology of the Tilden to raise its annual treatment capacity from 4 million tons to 8 million tons at that time [3 ~ 4]. In 2008, the selective flocculation and desliming-reverse flotation technology was successfully used to treat 2.8 million tons of Qidong iron ore. Under the conditions of 28.36% raw iron grade and 98% grinding fineness -0.038 mm, the ideal index of 62.5% iron concentrate grade and 68% recovery was obtained [5]. Dr Kitchenner of the Royal College of Mining and the Ore Processing Research Group of Wallenstein Laboratory first proposed the use of flocculation to separate minerals. After that, many scholars conducted a great deal of theoretical and practical researches, but mostly they focused on chemical theories, mathematical models and selectivity differences in the flocculation process, while the research on the influence of the pulp flow state on the separation effect in the flocculation process started later [6~9]. The results show that the motion of the agitated flow field has a significant influence on the formation of flocs. The fluid morphology will change with the change of hydraulic conditions. The change of fluid morphology will not only affect the movement behavior of particles, but also change the action of chemical agents on the surface of mineral particles[10~12]."

Under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy, a project was completed in 2005, which studied the use of a special pneumatic capsule pipeline (PCP) system, driven by linear induction motor (LIM), for transporting minerals and/or mine wastes. In this study, the pipeline is a rectangular tube of 1m × 1m cross section. The capsules are similar to railroad cars running on small rails imbedded in the tube. A LIM is placed AT the entrance of the tube to transfer power electro-magnetically from the LIM to capsules. The capsules going through the LIM, propelled by the electromagnetic field generated by the LIM, move faster than the air and hence impart energy into the airflow. This in turn pushes the capsules in the tube forward. When the tube is long (say longer than 10 km), additional LIMs may be needed along the tube to serve as booster pumps. An advantage of using LIMs instead of blowers as used in ordinary PCPs is that capsules can pass through the LIMs unhindered. This enables the use of booster pumps for long tubes. It also enables PCP to achieve much higher cargo throughput than that of PCPs using blowers, thereby reducing unit cost ($ per ton-km). Advantages of using capsules with steel wheels running on steel rails in the tubes including: (1) contact friction is only about one-fifth of that using rubber tires, thereby conserving energy, (2) capsules can run at a much higher speed than those using rubber tires without overheating and damaging the tires, and (3) rails make capsule motion control simple; they restrict lateral movement of capsules, and make branching easy-by using standard rail crossing equipment. This advanced PCP system combines the advantages of LIM with the advantages of rails, resulting in a super-efficient tube system having throughputs an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional PCPs, and having an energy efficiency better than railroad transport. Analysis shows that the system is highly cost-effective when throughput is high-at least 5 million tons per year. The system is most suitable for long-distance transportation of minerals (including coal and flyash) and wastes (including both mine wastes and municipal solid waste).

In the frame of Bioshale FP6 project, the bioprocessing of a polymetallic and polymineral concentrate produced in an industrial operation in Lubin, Poland, was assessed. Following successful batch culture tests, processing in continuous conditions was tested to determine the main specifications for the application of the stirred-tank technology to this sulphide concentrate from black shale ores. The experimental work was carried out in a laboratory-scale unit consisting of 3 stirred tanks (50L or 20L) using an acidophilic and moderate thermophilic bacterial population. Different configurations of the unit and key operating parameters were tested (nutrient medium composition, solids concentration, rates of agitation and aeration). Scientific and technical approaches, such as bacterial community structure and mineralogical analysis were implemented in order to better understand the chemical and biochemical reactions occurring in the system. Using the data produced during the continuous operation, downstream processing assessment for both copper and silver recovery was also carried out. The best copper recovery obtained in the continuous operation was 92% and a hot brine leaching of the bioleach residue (PLINT process) allowed to recover 92% of the silver. A preliminary tech-no-economic evaluation of Lubin concentrate bioprocessing including bioleaching, copper and silver recoveries demonstrated the potential economic feasibility. Recovery of silver plays an important role in the economy of the process. This study presents promising values to further investigate this bioprocessing option.

Mineral processing is characterized by a constant adaptation to changing raw materials and market conditions. It is the link between the mined raw material and a marketable product. As a lot of high grade reserves are exploited, a steady deterioration of raw material quality can be observed. At the same time, the customers´ requirements for product purity and consistent quality increase. Indian iron ores are characteristically friable in nature that results in generation of sizeable quantity of fines (0-10mm) every year during various stages of mining and processing in the country with grade varying from 50-60% Fe(T) and are high in silica/alumina (Al2O3 5-8%). The fines generated cannot be directly used for iron making (blast furnace/DRI units) in the country due its physical and chemical properties; therefore, large portion of it gets exported or dumped. Value addition to iron ore fines through various activities such as beneficiation & palletization is the need of the hour, which will not only be economically beneficial to the mining sector in the long run but also generate value addition & employment opportunities. Incentives may be given for adopting latest technologies for direct use of fines in iron making by agglomeration of fines in the form of Pellets and Sinters, as fines forms considerable part of iron ore resources. Due to selective mining, although the iron content of the ore is high but the alumina(Al2O3) content in iron ore is also significantly high which demands for beneficiation as high alumina will create problem during iron making like higher fuel consumption, poor quality of slag produced, reduced productivity of B.F. all mineral has been engaged in hematite iron ore beneficiation with its gravity and magnetic separators since the mid-nineties. The delivery of jigs started for the upgrading of iron ore for its utilization in a Direct Reduction Plant in Australia. Since then, various other installations with jigs for lumps and fines as well as upstream separators for fines are in operation in Brazil, Australia, India and South Africa. Low grade run of mine and/or dump ores are being processed with alljig®-, allflux®- and gaustec®-WHIMS as the core equipment. The article describes the technology in use, the characteristics of various iron ores and the product qualities achieved. The data presented shows the specific advantages of jig application on iron ore upgrading due to the possible high gravity cuts and the easy and low cost operation. The allflux®- technology provides the big advantage of high capacities and a two-step process, both in a single unit. The gaustec®-wet high intensity magnetic separators offer high capacity in combination with unsurpassed process flexibility. "Frothers offered by different manufacturers are marketed with some information on their chemical and physical properties (e.g. density, viscosity, color, water-solubility, safety/toxicity, etc.). But frothers are used in flotation to generate fine bubbles and to stabilize the forth, and this information is only provided in a very qualitative description of the visual appearance of bubbles and froths. The terms “powerful” and “selective”, which have been commonly used to characterize frothers, have intuitive rather than scientific meaning.This paper introduces the DFI (Dynamic Foamability Index) plotted vs. CCC (Critical Coalescence Concentration) diagrams to classify flotation frothers (Fig. 1). The frothers characterized by low CCC and high DFI values have properties of strong flotation frothers, while those with high CCC and low DFI values are more selective. The proposed frother classification system, based on simple CCC and DFI measurements, provides, for the first time, a solid ground-work for characterization of the flotation frothers."

India hosts a wide range of globally significant mineral resources, including four fuel minerals; 11 metallic minerals; 22 minor minerals and 52 non-metallic minerals. The country ranks among world?s top five nations for its commodity reserves of coal and iron ore. Interestingly, only small part of country&apos;s landmass has been explored that provides opportunity for future substantial mineral discoveries. India plans to double infrastructure investments to US$ 1trillion. Despite the challenges in infrastructure project implementation, mining sector remains a key driver of demand growth for commodities in the years to come with a good prospect to grow in future.

This paper presents an arcuate magnetic separator to remove the grinding ball fragment directly from the mill discharge, which will cause wear to downstream processing equipment such as pump, hydro cyclones and pebble crusher. This paper, by studying the surface properties of pure dolomite minerals separated from representative marine sedimentary rare earth-bearing phosphate ores in Zhijin, Guizhou, aims to study the effect of different anions on the ? potential of dolomite. The research findings showed that the dolomite mineral had a point of zero charge (PZC) at pH 6.5, and the PZC shifted towards lower pH values with addition of anion SiO32- and PO43-. A novel ilmenite collector, tert-butyl benzoic hydroxamic acid (TBHA), was investigated in this paper. The flotation performance and adsorption mechanism of TBHA to ilmenite were evaluated through pure mineral flotation tests, ?-potential measurement and IR spectrum analysis. The experiment results indicated that TBHA exhibited strong collecting capability to ilmenite under pH 6.0-8.5. At pH 7.0-10.0, TBHA existed in the form of anionic species in aqueous solution, and the ?-potential measurement results showed the surface of ilmenite maintained negative and more negative after the adsorption TBHA on it, which inferred that TBHA might adsorb on the surface of ilmenite through chemical interaction. The IR spectrum analysis further confirmed the chemical interaction between TBHA and ilmenite surface.
