During the phosphating of car bodies containing aluminium, the employed phosphating chemicals zinc, manganese and nickel are, for thermodynamic reasons, only used to a limited extent for the desired surface coating. The major proportion of these metals is discharged together with the incidental cryolite-containing phosphating sludges and the rinse water. Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Institute of Mineral and Waste Processing, Waste Disposal and Geomechanics at the Clausthal University of Technology has developed a two-stage process for the production-integrated recovery of the dragged out chemicals and for closing the rinse water cycle for Audi AG. During the first stage, the phosphating chemicals are recovered by means of leaching. In the second stage, the rinse water is treated by means of electroflotation followed by an ion exchanger.

The results study the minerals oxidation were obtained by us during the methods of microscopic, FT-IR spectroscopic, XRD and chemical analyses of sulphides in tailings of copper-nickel wastes in Kola peninsula. Sulphide minerals begin to oxidize already at the stage of stockpiling and initial stages of storing. The proportion of non-ferrous metals and magnesium oxide increases with time, calcium partially precipitating in the form of gypsum. Comparison of heavy metal contents in pore solutions in cur-rent and stale copper-nickel ore concentration tailings has revealed a significant difference in practically all the parameters. The lower metal contents in current tailing pore solutions (by 5~30 times) are probably due to the presence of float reagent residues blocking oxidation. Much lower concentrations of magnesium and calcium can be accounted for by the difference in kinetics: the rate of sulphide oxidation at this stage is much higher than that of solution interaction with non-metallic minerals as the result of which the solid phase ? solution equilibrium is not achieved. It is generally believed worldwide that it the mining wastes with acidic pore solutions that pose the greatest hazard for the environment. Our findings suggest that although the solution pH in all the samples is higher than 7.8, the contain heavy metal concentrations by far exceeding permissible values. The direct determination of the total and silicate Ni contents in the tailings from current production and in storage tailings has shown that both sulphide and silicate Ni forms occur in tailings. However, the role of silicate Ni is much larger in the storage tailings. The average silicate Ni content accounts for 10% of the bulk Ni content in the current tailings and it increases to 40% in the storage tailings. Thus, the storage tailings are marked not only by sulphide oxidation and the removal of water-soluble sulfates, but also by the interaction of sulfates with the silicate matrix. Although complete equilibrium is not achieved even within 30 yr under polar-region conditions, the major part of the Ni in fine-grained fractions passes into silicate form. The probability of Ni transition to the silicate form directly correlates with the dispersion of the material and the amount of chemically reactive serpentine and hydrochlorite. The migration of Ni as sulfates and its precipitation by chemically active silicates distorts the distribution of this component in the coarse- and fine-grained fractions that are typical of tailings from the current production of copper-nickel ores. On the one hand, the variation of the mode of Ni occurrence in storage tailings lowers the value of technogenic raw materials as a source of this metal.

"More than 400 plants in the world are able to accumulate nickel (Ni) in their aerial parts at concentrations higher than 10 g per kg of dry biomass. Then, Ni can be recovered from the biomass of these hyperaccumulator plants. Agromining is a chain consisting in growing such plants and producing metal. It has been developed thanks to the combined know-how of agronomy and hydrometallurgy. Hydrometallurgical processes have been designed; two different pathways were developed: i) acid leaching of ashes after biomass combustion and ii) direct Ni water extraction after biomass grinding. Experiments with 2 species of Ni hyperaccumulators (A. murale from the Balkans and R. bengalensis from Malaysia) have shown that the first process is very robust and transposable. For the second one, the way Ni is stored in the plant has a strong influence on extraction. A. murale transformation was explored in more details from the lab scale to the pilot scale. Results proved that Ni is totally transferred into the aqueous phase after 2 hours at 90 °C. A life cycle assessment has clearly shown the environmental interest of this approach (especially by detoxifying agricultural soils). INTRODUCTION Agromining is an emerging phytotechnology aiming at recovering metals thanks to hyperaccumulating plants (van der Ent et al., 2018). These plants are able to accumulate very high concentrations of metal in their aerial parts. For example, for nickel, the hyperaccumulation threshold is 0.1%, i.e. 10 grams of metal per kilogram of dry biomass. There are some advantages to use this technology instead of conventional mining techniques: •,Treating unconventional metal resources: they can be (i) natural soils with low concentrations but also low fertility because of the metal presence (like serpentine soils for Ni) (Bani et al., 2015), (ii) mine tailings or (iii) industrial wastes (like surface treatment sludge) after soil construction (Rue, 2017);"

Rare metal ores have those features of high industrial value and bad performance in ore separation. Most of rare metals ores are with low grade of valuable components, rareness of useful minerals, complicated combination of associated minerals and high difficulty in separation and enrichment of minerals. For those single (Ta, Nb) or (Ta, Nb, Sn) ore occurred in granite and pegmatite, the ways of gravity separation and magneto electric separation to concentrate (Ta, Nb) minerals are adopted. There are many mines being explored successfully both at home and aboard. While, for complex (Nb-Zr-REE) ores associated with Be and Ti minerals, they are commonly considered as rich rare metals ore but more difficult to process. One of rare metals mine in Inner Mongolia has the features as with large reserves and high grade of columbium and zirconium and accompanies with REE and beryllium, therefore with significant industrial value. After the utilization of research method of process mineralogy, detailed mineralogy research has been made on the rare metals ore. The test results show that there are abroad isomorphism replacements among such elements, such as Ti, Mn, Fe, Nb and Ta, between Be and REE in metallic oxide minerals of that ore, which makes the mineral composition of that ore extremely complicated. This research identifies clearly the mineral composition, and investigate at the technological property and the occurrence of those elements as Nb, Zr, Be and REE in the rare metal ore. The achievements of this research provide important mineralogy basis for ore dressing research of refractory rare metallic ores.

The flotation behavior of kaolinite and diaspore using N, N-diethyl dodecyl amine (DEN12) and N, N-dimethyl dodecyl amine (DRN12) as collector have been investigated through flotation experiments. The mechanism of adsorption of two tertiary amine collectors on surface of kaolinite and diaspore were investigated by FTIR spectral, Zeta potentials measurements and calculation of molecular orbital energy. It has been found that DEN12 and DRN12 have stronger collecting power to kaolinite and weaker collecting abilityto diaspore than DDA. Kaolinite and diaspore in bauxite ores can be separated by using DEN12 and DRN12 as collectors at pulp pH below 8 and 6, respectively. The results of zeta potentials and calculation of molecular orbital energy indicated that the adsorption strength on kaolinite surface is in the order DEN12>DRN12>DDA and the adsorption strength on diaspore surface is in the order DDA>DEN12>DRN12. FTIR spectral analysis and Zeta potentials approve that the action between kaolinite and tertiary amine collector is strong electrostatic adsorption and that of diaspore is weak electrostatic adsorption in the range of pH 5~6.

The flotation of sphalerite and galena in the presence of intra- and extra-cellular components isolated from Bacillus circulans before and after adaptation to the chosen minerals has been studied. Based on various biochemical treatments, the key biomolecule primarily responsible for the flotation of sphalerite has been identified as DNA, which functions as a bio-collector. A noteworthy finding is the considerably higher flotation recovery of sphalerite obtained in the presence of single stranded DNA (79.8%) vis-à-vis double stranded DNA (50.2%). Selective flotation tests using the soluble fraction obtained after thermolysis treatment highlight that sphalerite-adapted cells yield a higher selectivity index (S. I.) of 31.2 compared to galena-adapted (S.I. 4.3) or unadapted (S.I. 12.2) cells. During bacterial adaptation to the above chosen minerals, the quantitative and qualitative changes in the surface potential, surface morphology and cell wall components have been monitored. The prior adaptation of the bacteria to sphalerite results in the secretion of a higher amount of proteins, eDNA and phosphate, whereas adaptation to galena leads to a higher amount of polysaccharide, uronic acid and acetylated sugar, vis-à-vis the unadapted bacteria. A significant observation is that the bacteria undergo a change in morphology from rod to sphere as a strategy to resist metal toxicity during adaptation to galena. Interestingly, this phenomenon is not observed during bacterial adaptation to sphalerite. This morphological transition has been shown to involve changes in crucial cell wall components as well as changes in the levels of expression of bacterial cytoskeleton element mreB gene involved in the maintenance of the rod shape. The sequence of B.circulans mreB gene has been identified using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) followed by DNA sequencing.

Pyrite is present as a gangue mineral in most of complex sulphide ores and most of time it is removed as a tailing. However, beneficiation of pyrite from tailings could be important because of its economical value and for the environmental concern. This paper presents a research for the enrichment of pyrite from copper plant tailings, Siirt-Madenköy/Turkey, by flotation. Siirt-Madenköy copper mine is operated by Park Electric Production Mining and Industry since 2005. In order to obtain the pyrite from Siirt-Madenköy copper plant tailings, laboratory test work has to be done to determine the type of reagents, the flowsheet, and the size of plant. The objective of the company is to develop a pyrite flotation circuit for concentration of pyrite from tailing dam to obtain 500.000 tons/year pyrite concentrate. There are about 3 million tons tailings that containing pyrite in the tailings dam. Experiments were carried out with three different types of tailings from the plant and the pyrite concentrate with 46% Fe and 90% recovery has been obtained. Therefore, this study shows that high grade pyrite with high recovery can be recovered from the tailings.

"In the mineral-processing field, bioleaching of metal sulphide concentrates is currently operated in very large mechanically agitated tanks. Such bioreactors have considerable requirements in terms of power consumption for mixing, aeration and heat transfer. The use of slurry bubble column, where the particles are suspended by gas motion as well as by liquid upward flow, could be an alternative to achieve bioleaching in more economical conditions. In order to compare these two techniques, a unit of stirred reactors in cascade and a bubble column were comparatively operated at laboratory scale in the bioleaching of a pyrite concentrate. For both pieces of equipment, experiments were performed not only in batch mode but also in continuous conditions.Bubble column performances were significantly affected by unpredictable technical difficulties met to maintain continuous feeding in the bubble column and by a significant settling of the heavy solid particles. Nonetheless, theoretical kinetic data, extrapolated from results in batch conditions, could be compared to those obtained in continuous tests, in bubble column and in mechanically agitated reactors. These kinetic data were used to evaluate the influence of reactor design and configuration choice on bioleaching performances."

"Beneficiation of the epithermal gold mineralizations associated with an extensive alteration zone in the Serrenti-Furtei region on the island of Sardinia, is proving a complex issue. Experimental investigations have in fact demonstrated that while the ores contained in the upper parts of the deposit are amenable to conventional cyanidation, the gold contained in the refractory ores in the lower portions needs to be recovered by means of flotation, combined with leaching where necessary.The results of commercial heap leaching, carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing and flotation, designed on the basis of the experimental findings and applied to the oxidized portions and transition zones of the deep sulphide mineralizations, confirmed the expectations emerging from the laboratory tests."

A practical an interactive model to describe the operation of a flotation bank of mechanical cells was developed based on the hydrodynamic and metallurgical characterization of large industrial flotation cells. Thus, the mineral grade and recovery, as well as the stream properties along the flotation bank can be described in terms of the operating variables. The model was built considering the flotation bank as a distributed system, so the solution for the water and solids mass balances, per size classes, for each single cell, are sequentially solved. Also, each cell was described by two distinct zones, the collection zone characterized by the flotation rate constant and the froth zone characterized by the froth recovery. The mineral feed was described in terms of the mineral species and particle size classes, using a rectangular flotation rate constant distribution. Also, the effect of changing the actual operating variables (air flowrate, pulp level, pulp density, pulp flowrate, etc.) on the mineral collection process, in the collection (pulp) zone, was considered downstream along the bank. The froth recovery of floatable mineral has been estimated by measuring the mass flowrate of particles entering the froth by true flotation together with the concentrate mass flowrate (ton/h). The mass flowrate of collected particles at the pulp/froth interface level was calculated from direct measurement of bubble load (ton/m3) and gas flowrate (m3/h). Flotation recovery is mainly related to the froth depth and air flowrate. All parameters considered in the model have been adjusted from direct measurements in plant site. Also, the effects of other operating variables such as reagents dosage, top of froth grade, or froth discharge velocity are presently under study. This procedure has been tested using data from industrial rougher operations consisting of flotation banks with 5 cells to 9 cells in series, and different cell sizes, such as 45m3, 130m3, 160m3 and 250m3. Thus, it has been shown that the model approach is a powerful tool for flotation cells diagnosis, operation and development of new control strategies, as well as, to evaluate the effect that de-sign and operating variables have upon the collection and froth zones performance in large flotation cells.

"The small recovery of Ag, often in the order of 50%, by traditional flotation and leaching process strategies is closely related to the complicated and heterogeneous nature of Ag-bearing minerals with Ag typically being associated with numerous minerals within any given ore-body. Moreover, grain sizes may be extremely fine with micron-scale common. In order to design cost-effective Ag-bearing mineral flotation and leach recovery strategies it is firstly necessary to characterise the speciation of Ag and its correlation with other elements, e.g., Cu, As and Sb, within the ore matrix and process streams. The traditional QEM-SCAN analytical approach can prove problematic for some mineralogies due to difficulties in recognising degrees of crystallinity, polymorphs, complex solid solution series, high value trace element mineralogy, very fine grained materials; and the requirement for a comprehensive data base. Moreover, there is difficulty ‘seeing’ either surface films or surface contaminants which can both lead to poor flotation performance. There is therefore clearly a need to develop confirmatory and complementary approaches when these uncertainties arise. Synchrotron X-ray microprobe analysis provides a powerful tool for the mineralogical characterisation of finely segregated heterogeneous Ag-containing materials. These measurements enable comprehensive characterisation of the Ag-bearing components using synchrotron microprobe X-ray fluorescence mapping (µ-XFM), X-ray diffraction (µ-XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (µ-XAS). Further analytical strength is provided by principal component analysis of laboratory ToF-SIMS data which enables the statistical identification of correlated surface species enabling examination of surface chemical characteristics responsible for mis-reporting of Ag containing components within flotation streams. We describe the application of these techniques to a selected Ag-containing feed and tail and demonstrate how these compliment and extend traditional analytical methodologies."

India has sizeable number of small deposits of rare metal bearing minerals namely columbite-tantalite, pyrochlore, beryl, lepidolite, spodumene and rare-earth element bearing minerals monazite and xenotime in different parts of India. Pegmatites, alkali granites, syenites, and the derived gravel and soils are the main source for rare metal and rare earth (RMRE) minerals. The RMRE minerals are classified as prescribed substances under Atomic Energy act of 1962 keeping in view the uses in the nuclear industry. Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is the sole agency responsible for exploration and exploitation of RMRE minerals in India since 1962. The latest technological advancements and applications in the field of space, electronics, communication and nuclear industry using these metals and their products have necessitated to augment the production and resources of RMRE minerals. These minerals play a significant role in the technological and economic development of the country. The light rare earth element bearing mineral monazite is abundant in beach sands and is being commercially exploited by Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL). Columbite-tantalite, the chief source for niobium and tantalum (Nb-Ta) metals present in the pegmatitic gravel are recovered by small mobile beneficiation plants. The cut and fill method of mining adapted is eco-friendly. The processing flow-sheet consists of wet sizing at ½ in and 1mm followed by gravity concentration of sized products utilizing the methods of jigging and wet tabling. The sizing equipment include revolving and vibratory screens and the gravity concentration equipments used are fixed sieve jigs and movable screen jigs for final upgradation. The gravity concentrates are further upgraded by magnetic separation to remove magnetite and ilmenite. The mine areas are reclaimed by filling with coarse size tailings and new plantations. These mobile pilot plants were earlier operated in Bihar mica belt, Jharkhand, pegmatitic areas of Karnataka and Nellore mica belt of Andhra Pradesh and are currently being operated in Bastar-Malkangiri pegmatite belt of Chhattisgarh and pegmatites of Jharsuguda district of Orissa. Beryl, lepidolite, spodumene and cassiterite minerals are the by-products from the pegmatite ores. Fergusonite, samarskite and microlite are the other niobium and tantalum bearing minerals which are also found in pegmatites. Xenotime, the chief mineral of yttirium generally occurs in granites and pegmatites. The rare earth minerals monazite and xenotime get concentrated in the placer sands of rivers and beaches. The occurrence of xenotime in the sands of Siri River and Deo River in Chhotanagpur granitic terrain in parts of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand are an example. These sands containing 1-2.5% heavy minerals were processed by a mobile plant consisting of sizing equipments like trommel and vibratory screen followed by separation of heavy minerals from -1mm sands with the help of gravity concentration equipments like spirals/shaking tables/sluices. Xenotime and monazite from the pre-concentrate are further separated by magnetic and electro-static methods. The present paper illustrates the pilot plant set up for the recovery of rare metal as well as rare earth minerals. The Thompson Nickel Belt, located in Northern Manitoba, Canada, contains more than 400 million tonnes of ultramafic low-grade nickel mineralization in 9 deposits. One of these, the Pipe deposit, was mined between 1971 and 1983 producing a Ni concentrate of 9% to 11% grade at 73% recovery. The operation was terminated because the poor recovery, low Ni grade and high MgO con-tent of the concentrate made processing this ore uneconomical at the metal prices prevailing at that time. Vale Inco is now re-evaluating these deposits with the intent of providing a new source of concentrate for its Thompson integrated processing facility. It is known that serpentine slimes coating on the sulphide surfaces are responsible for the poor metallurgy. Various desliming methods were tested including settling, elutriating, tabling and hydrocycloning. Hydrocycloning has proven to be the most effective means of desliming. With a feed assaying 0.70% Ni and 33% MgO, a rougher flotation concentrate assaying 22.7% Ni and 4.8% MgO was produced at a Ni recovery of 62.5% (relative to the feed to grinding), with no utilization of slimes dispersants. Another 16.6% Ni recovery was achieved in scavenger flotation resulting in a total Ni recovery of 79.1%. Batch flotation tests using various flowsheet configurations to optimize the grinding, desliming, reagentizing and flotation conditions are in progress.

"Coprecipitation with ferrihydrite has been one of the major treatment method for As(V) removal from wastewater such as acid mine drainage. We already confirmed coprecipitation of As(V) with ferrihydrite consists of two kinds of mechanism; one is two dimensional As(V) uptake to the surface of ferrihydrite by surface complexation and another is three dimensional As(V) uptake into ferrihydrite by surface precipitation. We also already confirmed As(V) adsorption process by ferrihydrite could be quantitatively evaluated by original surface complexation model with parameter values reported by Dzombak and Morel. However, As(V) coprecipitation process couldn’t quantitatively be represented by only the original model. In this study, construction and calculation using surface precipitation model were attempted for As(V) coprecipitation treatment with ferrihydrite. In the surface precipitation model, precipitation was described by the formation of solid compound between ferrihydrite and ferric arsenate. Activity of these precipitates was determined by surface precipitation ratio of FeAsO4(s) obtained experimentally from XANES analyses. Solubility products of surface precipitation of FeAsO4(s) (Ksp_FeAsO4(suf.)) were determined by fitting to sorption densities and surface precipitation ratio in each condition. The values of Ksp_FeAsO4(suf.) were determined 10-7.7 at pH5 and 10-10.2 at pH7, respectively. Based on the obtained Ksp_FeAsO4(suf.) value, As(V) removal and isotherm were calculated for As(V) co-precipitation treatment using surface precipitation model. Good agreement between experimental and calculated values was observed. These results were suggested that the quantitative prediction of As(V) co-precipitation treatment was possible if Ksp_FeAsO4(suf.) value was estimated experimentally."

The velocity of gas passing through a flotation cell can be estimated by collecting bubbles by natural buoyancy in a closed tube and measuring the rate of pressure increase. The governing equation is derived and verified. Single- and two-tube gas velocity sensors are described. The latter design permits a correction for bulk density and level change during signal collection.

"The aim of the study was to develop and implement more efficient dialkyldithiophosphate collectors. A hypothesis has been formulated on the action of dialkyldithiophosphates in the flotation of sulphide ores based on the assessment of their complexing properties and surface activity at the liquid-gas border. Dialkyldithiophosphates form weaker complexes with cations of heavy metals compared to xanthates, and are characterized by a large difference in the strength of their complexes with heavy metal cations. It provides higher selectivity of dialkyldithiophosphates in the separation of non-ferrous metal sulphides and iron sulphides from them. To make a quality assessment of the impact of surface activity of the synthesized collectors on their selectivity of action and collecting power, an assessment of the surface tension of their aqueous solutions has been performed using the stalagmometer method. It is well known that a stronger collector is characterized by a greater surface activity, in contrast to a more selective collector which is characterized by a lower surface activity. Based on studies, new dialkyldithiophosphate collectors BTF 163 and BTF 1552 are suggested for use in the flotation of sulphides to increase the recovery of copper, gold and silver. The collector BTF 163 was introduced at a gold processing plant in Kazakhstan and has been undergoing industrial testing in the sulphide cycle of scheelite-skarn-sulphide ores in a factory in the far east of Russia. The collector BTF 1552, which increases the recovery of silver and gold by 3%, was approved for industrial testing in another far-eastern factory. A modification of the reagent BTF 1552, the new reagent BTF 1522, was introduced in the flotation of copper-zinc ore at a factory in Kazakhstan."

"We present an analysis of trajectory and time averaged data of near gravitational material (NGM) representative coal tracer particles within a magnetite medium passing through a 100mm diameter hydrocyclone imaged with PEPT (positron emission particle tracking) at iThemba labs, Cape Town. The tracking of neutrally buoyant tracers as well as the other NGM allows an empirical study of the approximate dynamical behaviours of both the dense medium as well as the range (size and density) of particles around the separator’s cut size within a partially imaged volume of the cyclone body lying within the field of view of the detector. The study was commissioned as part of a CFD validation study using empirical data from a real-world lab-appropriate system in order to shed light on the inner workings of hydrocyclones and their separation mechanisms. We employ various optimisation and noise reduction techniques within the analysis and follow a detailed investigation of the velocity fields derived from the raw spatial positions with an emphasis on the velocity profile within the forced and free vortex zones. Challenges encountered with this high velocity particle tracking experiment within a highly attenuating environment are also discussed. Various important velocity distributions are shown and compared to theoretical predictions. The power law decay profile of the free vortex and radial velocity scaling with regards to the Froude number are reproduced in line with the static particle approach. INTRODUCTION Cyclones have long been a vital industrial tool for the separation of different classes of particles. These cyclonic separators (with either gas or liquid medium) operate by forcing the solids-bearing fluid at high pressure into a cylindrical vessel causing high tangential velocity fluid rotation as well as, in the case of an “open” (with exit channels open to the atmosphere) cyclone, a central vortex air column spanning from underflow to overflow exit. The fluid is forced to exit the cyclone at two locations, the spigot and the vortex finder, generating the underflow and overflow respectively. The body of the cyclone usually terminates in a conical shape to focus the underflow stream. This geometry and large incident fluid velocity force high density materials toward the wall of the vessel where they are most likely to move along and down the inside wall away from the inlet to exit via the underflow while lower density materials traverse the cyclone body closer to the central vortex and are buffeted by the upward-moving column towards the overflow exit. "Pelletizing is an important technique in the ironmaking industry. Artificial and natural magnetites are materials that are widely utilized in the iron ore pelletizing process. In this work, the pelletizing characteristics of these two types of magnetite have been investigated in detail. The obtained results shown that in contrast to natural magnetite, the artificial magnetite concentrate exhibits stronger hydrophilicity, lower electronegativity, larger specific surface area, and rougher surface. In addition, the green pellets produced from the artificial magnetite concentrate are characterized by a higher compressive strength as compared to that of the pellets obtained from the natural magnetite concentrate. However, the shock temperature of the artificial magnetite pellets around 255 C is significantly lower than the threshold specified by the industry. The balling characteristics of the material obtained by mixing 20% of the artificial magnetite concentrate with 80% of the natural magnetite concentrate are considerably improved with respect to those of the individual components.INTRODUCTION Pelletization is an essential process of the ironmaking industry in China. Since the pellets produced from iron ore exhibit high mechanical strength, good particle granularity, and uniform shapes, pelletizing high-grade iron ores with good metallurgical reducibility can lower the coke ratio, improve their technico-economic index, and reduce the cost of processing pig iron in blast furnaces[1, 2]. Presently, high-grade magnetite is a material utilized for pelletizing various iron ores across the globe. However, its natural deposits have been depleting rapidly in recent years; as a result[3], China’s dependence on the foreign high-grade iron ores exceeded 70% in 2009 and reached the level of 87% in 2016. Hence, possible methods for the efficient cultivation of limonite, siderite, hematite, and other refractory minerals that correspond to low-grade, finely sized, inhomogeneous, and scattered iron ores have attracted significant attention [4, 5]. In particular, magnetization reduction roasting and magnetic separation techniques, which are widely utilized for obtaining high-grade artificial magnetite, represent effective ways of processing iron ores that can alleviate the scarcity of natural magnetite resources [6, 7]. The artificial magnetite produced by magnetization reduction roasting exhibits different characteristics as compared with those of natural magnetite (including the degree of hydrophilicity, surface potential, specific surface area, and other surface physicochemical properties[8-11], which significantly affect its pelletizing behavior. In this work, the surface characteristics of artificial and natural magnetites are investigated in detail, and their effect on their pelletizing properties (such as green ball strength, heat stability, and pelletization rate) are examined."

The challenges of nature for the recovery of metals for a sustainable future continue to present in diverse ways. Base metal deposits are becoming lower grade and more complex. Rare earth metal demand is soaring and must certainly be met from new sources outside of China. Precious metals have soared in value due to increased industrial usage and the importance of these metals as financial instruments. Many of the future sources of precious metals are complex and difficult to process. The field of hydrometallurgy plays an important role in providing technology for extraction of these metals for a sustainable future. Selected examples from the base, rare and precious metals fields will be used to illustrate how current developments are providing metals for our future. The recovery of rare earths by beneficiation, leaching, purification, precipitation will be described from a multi-mineral deposit in Canada. The recovery of metals from complex base and precious metal ores may be accomplished using chloride ? assisted high temperature pressure leaching. Finally, by way of example, the enhanced Galvanox? process for treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates using silver-activated pyrite as a catalyst will be illustrated. This process offers a viable alternative to the conventional smelting of chalcopyrite copper concentrates.

"HPGR (High-Pressure Grinding Rolls) is widely used today for grinding of various kinds of ores such as iron ore or base and precious metal ores. It can be used as first stage of grinding replacing tertiary crusher and SAG mill, but also as regrinding stage to enhance mineral liberation. In addition to better energy efficiency, the advantage of HPGR is to produce much more internal particle fractures allowing faster leaching as it has been demonstrated for some gold ores. This grinding mode of compression and fracture generation also promotes mineral liberation without overgrinding. Mineral processing modelling and simulation associated to detailed ore characterization constitute a powerful tool for plant design and optimization. The mathematical models of the units of operations (grinding and separation) have to reproduce the mineral deportment for which the mineral liberation plays a central role. The present paper is focused on the HPGR modelling with the objective of plant optimization or advanced design from pilot plant tests. The traditional approach of the population balance linked to the energy dissipation and the residence time distribution is generalized in association with a mineral liberation model. The effect of the specific HPGR breakage matrix and grinding function on the mineral liberation rate is discussed and compared to the tumbling mill. The implementation of this mathematical model into a plant simulation tool is illustrated by the example of the optimization of an iron ore concentrator."
