The per capita energy consumption in India is 510kgoe/year, the global average being nearly 1818kgoe/year. Correspondingly low is the per capita CO2 emission at 1.25t against the world average of 4.39t.65-70%, at times more, of India?s power generation from about 190,000 MW installed capacity, is however coal fired.India therefore has to secure diversified sources of energy and solar power is increasingly being looked as the real alternative to the existing over dependence on coal. To ensure sustainable solar power it is essential to secure its raw material base that is ?silica?, hitherto considered as ?minor minerals?. That calls for immediately addressing the issues of land availability, solar power cost, developing a dynamic inventory of silica containing minerals, appropriate processing technology and strong regulatory framework for sustainable mining and processing of all silica rich minerals. Zeolite in some regions or countries of the world have been the subjects of materials for environmental remediation involving the use of removal to heavy metal ions and some organic pollutant as a sorbent because of its capacious ions exchange and huge surface area. This article addresses the equilibrium and kinetics for manganese adsorption using zeolite modified by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HTMAB) as a sorbent material over a range of pH between 3.4~7.2 with eight different Mn(?) solution concentrations. PHzpc (pH of zero point charge) of the sorbent was examined according to the method proposed by Tripathy and Kanungo, and a value of 6.91 was obtained. The experimental data fit langmuir?s model for the majority of pH and Mn(?) solution concentrations tested (0.92<R2<0.97). The maximal adsorption capacity, qm ascending with pH between 3.4~7.2, rise from 15.01mg?g-1 at 3.4 to 19.46 mg?g-1 at 7.2. Besides, the constant of Freundlich Kf have the same trend with qm, increases with pH ascending. And the sorption intensity, represented by parameter 1/n in Freundlich?s model, is favorable in entire range of metal ions concentration studied. Finally, kinetics data accurately fit to pseudo-second order which indicate that there must be sorption of Mn(?) behavior occurring on inner-sphere of the sorbent.

In this study, effect of thiosulphate and oxidation using oxygen were studied in arseno copper ore flotation. Single mineral study of chalcopyrite and tennantite in regard to the aforementioned techniques was also studied. Zeta potential, XPS, contact angle and floatability of single minerals were conducted for each treatment to understand the mechanism. It was revealed that the separation is best conducted in alkaline condition at where there will be interaction between thiosulphate and the mineral surface as well as the formation of hydroxide species in the oxidation using oxygen. From zeta potential of both thiosulphate and oxidation conditioning, it can be found that the reactivity of tennantite is much higher rather than chalcopyrite resulting higher rate of depression on both techniques as shown from contact angle and floatability of each mineral after treatment. XPS spectra confirmed qualitatively and quantitatively the existence of species responsible for the depression of each conditioning techniques. As for the copper ore flotation test, it is the oxidation using oxygen provides best performance after 60 minutes of oxidation. Particle characteristics such as size, density, liberation and magnetic susceptibility play vital role in magnetic separation technique. To understand the performance of magnetic separation process for chromite beneficiation industry, particle characteristics need to be analysed. However, to date, this has been an expensive and time consuming task, thus only minimal amounts of this type of data are available in the literature. Several new methods are being developed, that will produce the required mineralogical and liberation data to provide processing information rapidly and inexpensively. Among these, QEMSCAN is a unique and advanced characterisation equipment used for liberation analysis for different ore whereas S.G. Franz Isodynamic Separator for determining the magnetic susceptibility. In Indian chromite deposits, the content of iron bearing minerals in the ore is typical which controls the Cr:Fe ratio in the product while treating in gravity based beneficiation plant. In the present investigation, detailed characterisation of two distinct chromite ore samples from Sukinda chromite deposit, India, was investigated which includes advanced mineral characterisation using QEMSCANand magnetic susceptibility measurement by using Frantz Isodynamic separator, etc.. Presence of haematite and gibbsite along with chromite mineral were identified as major gangue minerals in the high grade ore from XRD pattern whereas Goethite, Quartz, Haematite, Kaolinite, Ringwoodite identified in the low grade ore. The mass magnetic susceptibility of low grade ore is very high 5.2 cm3/g compared to 2.7 cm3/g for high grade ore, due to the presence of abundant quantity of iron bearing minerals. Subsequently, these two types of ore were subjected for magnetic separation for improving Cr:Fe ratio by using different magnetic separators viz. induced roll magnetic separator, wet high intensity magnetic separator, rare earth roll magnetic separator, rare earth drum magnetic separator. The results of magnetic separation studies indicated that, Cr: Fe ratio of the chromite ores can be improved to 3.99 and 1.97 from the feed assaying 3.09 and 1.29 respectively. Studies on rare earth roll magnetic separator indicated that both the ores were upgraded to a maximum Cr:Fe ratio level at optimised condition. "The Olserum deposit located in Sweden hosts an indicated mineral resource of 4.5 million tonnes over 0.6 % TREO, exhibiting a relatively high proportion of HREE. Beneficiation of a composite drill core sample was studied in the flowsheet of magnetic separation of magnetite followed by REE minerals flotation. Primary testwork was performed to select an effective REE mineral collector and then the parameters of grinding size, collector and depressant dosages, slurry pH and density, conditioning time and temperature, and flotation time were tested for optimization of REE flotation. The studies of process mineralogy showed that the REE-bearing minerals monazite, xenotime and apatite were successfully enriched from the concentrations of 0.6%, 0.31% and 2.6% in the feed to those of 17.0%, 8.9% and 65.0% in the concentrate with the recoveries of 79.0%, 81.3% and 71.0%, respectively. INTRODUCTION The Olserum deposit located in Sweden comprises lower grade placer material with higher grade apatite-magnetite veins and hosts an indicated mineral resource of 4.5 million tonnes at 0.6% TREO, with 34% of that being HREO (EURARE, 2017). The mineralization was studied by Andersson et al. (2018). At early stage, high-temperature REE is characterized by abundant monazite-(Ce) and xenotime-(Y) coexisting with fluorapatite and subordinate amounts of (Y,REE,U,Fe)-(Nb,Ta) oxides. During a subsequent stage, allanite-(Ce) and ferriallanite-(Ce) formed locally, partly resulting from the breakdown of primary monazite-(Ce). Alteration of allanite-(Ce) or ferriallanite-(Ce) to bastnäsite-(Ce) and minor synchysite-(Ce) at lower temperatures represents the latest stage of REE mineral formation. The mineralogy and beneficiation were firstly studied by GTK Mintec in the EURARE project for a composite drill core sample. The Olserum is considerably smaller than the Norra Kärr deposit. However, REE are hosted by xenotime and monazite, both of which have well established processing pathways, and meanwhile, the Olserum has a high contribution of the high value critical REE (dysprosium (Dy), yttrium (Y), neodymium (Nd) and terbium (Tb)), which provide a unique advantage for its exploration (Tasman Metals Ltd., 2013). Preparation strontium carbonate with celestite concentrate by flotation is studied by agglomeration-reduction roasting process. It is shown that, the drop strength of green pellet is greater than 4 times?(0.5m) -1 under the balling conditions of moisture of 9% and time of 18~20min. Lignin xanthate obviously improves the ballability of the celestite concentrate due to the increase of surface hydrophilicity, therefore, the balling rate is increased, as well as green ball strength. The drop strength of 7 times?(0.5m) -1 can be obtained when the lignin xanthate dosage is 0.5%~1%. Reduction roasting with anthracite shows that the SrSO4 conversion is 82%~83% for celestite concentrate pellet, under the optimal conditions of roasting temperature of 1100~1150? and time of 30min, and it is 10% higher than conversion of celestite lump under the same conditions. The strontium carbonate are prepared after roasted pellets are leached, purified and carbonated, and the SrCO3 content is higher than 97% , while the content of CaCO3 is less than 0.3%.

"In mining and minerals industry, except profitability, there are some crucial factors that represent components in economic machinery of a mine and related activities. These are sustainability and minimizing environmental impact factor. Environmental concerns combined with the water and energy availability and related costs, as well as public license to operate all contrive to demand for more efforts targeting sustainability. Mining industry is highly energy-intensive (estimated to consume 6-7% of total world’s energy), with varying the energy efficiency across the industry resulting in significant costs. Size reduction is the main energy consumer contributing to almost 50% of the total energy used in mining. That means efforts must be made to introduce energy efficient comminution flow-sheets and machineries for sustainable development. Since the crushers are more energy efficient than mills, it is logic to push down-sizing in crushing stage(s) as far as technically possible. That has been strategy for Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology in supplying advanced and effective crushers to provide fine crushed product for subsequent milling stage. Lowering the energy consumption and related costs as well as increasing throughput have been the main objectives in design and development of comminution circuits and related machineries. Inefficiency in comminution technology, particularly in grinding, has long been regarded as a major area for investigation and development, especially when production of fines and ultra-fines are considered. In an attempt to explore the potential of fine crushing and its effects on subsequent milling process the fine crushing performance of Sandvik’s conventional cone crusher and Vertical Shaft Impactor (VSI) in pilot scale to define the energy consumption and circulating load in fine crushing. Tests were conducted to obtain fine crushed products at P = 2 mm in a close circuit. Furthermore, the crushed products were characterized and compared by grind-ability, morphology, and surface area measurement tests. Finally, the energy consumption to grind the crushed products to specific grind size was calculated."

"Metals have been mined as ores since pre-history but metal production has increased dramatically in modern times driven by expanding Global GDP. Metal ore mining produces large amounts of waste rock and mine tailings. Mine tailings are the wastes produced after extracting the desired metal from the ore. There are several ways of dealing with this waste, and Ritcey (2005) identifies the following possibilities, land-based storage, backfill to the mine, deep lake disposal and marine disposal. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), both Misima and Lihir Mines adopted the marine disposal option, releasing tailings through a submerged pipe onto the sea floor. This special case is referred to as Deep Sea Tailings Placement (DSTP) in which the tailings deposition is sufficiently deep as to be below the euphotic zone. The most important aspect of deep sea tailings placement is that the tailings are deposited at great depth where exchanges between the seabed and the surface layers are small. The first quantitative multidisciplinary study of tailings impact on the deep sea was carried out from 2006 to 2010 in Papua New Guinea. The physical, chemical and biological work carried out has placed PNG at the forefront of research into the assessment and management of deep-sea environmental impacts related to mining in PNG. The study has provided data which has led to a better understanding of the ecological and geochemical processes in deep water that accompany DSTP in PNG and provided baseline data on deep-sea ecosystems in a scientifically poorly known tropical ocean. Additionally, guidelines on best practice for DSTP have been developed Here we present geochemical data obtained from sediment samples from the marine environment surrounding Lihir and Misima Islands."

"The triboelectric charge attributes of feldspar, quartz and wollastonite minerals, after contacting different triboecharging medium made of different materials, were considered. Their charge acquisitions by different size fractions of minerals were monitored and accordingly their energetic work function values were estimated. Moreover the separation behaviours of these minerals through the electric field of a laboratory free falling separator were determined and the effects of some chemical reagents on separation their separation characteristics were studied.Finally an attempt was made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a complex silicate ore, containing quartz, feldspars, wollastonite and some other silicates. The results show favourable prospect to apply the triboelectric separation technique for beneficiation such a complex raw material."

Turkey?s EU affairs started in 1963 with the Ankara Treaty. On 31 December 1995 the Customs Union between Turkey and the European Union came into effect. In order to achieve the Copenhagen Criteria?s, Turkey, made laws parallel to the Framework Programs. On 3 October 2005, with the confirmation of ?Membership Framework Document? the negotiation process of Turkey has started. Coal had important role in the industrialization of EU and it is directly related to Energy and Environmental subjects. In this point many restriction became with the some protocols, in last decades. European Union composed Energy and Coal Policy, therefore engaged to reduce the emissions, and made new regulations. This regulations concern Turkey?s energy future, since large; but low quality of lignite reserves of Turkey, it is expected to have some difficulties with Union?s Environmental Legislation during Turkey?s congruity process. With the last natural gas import agreements of Turkey, the production and consumption of coal sunk in last seven years. However, considering environmental sustainability, the role of coal in energy production will rise up in the coming future. In this paper, in terms of Turkey Energy Sector, production and consumption problems of coal discussed and evaluated considering EU?s coal, energy and environmental rudiments.

Poor floatability of fine particles is known to be the main cause of the low recovery of ilmenite in Panzhihua, which is the largest titanium mine of China. To get an optimum ilmenite recovery, selective flocculation, and flotation of fine ilmenite was investigated through flotation tests, particle size analysis, zeta potential tests and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) shows flocculation effect for both ilmenite and titanaugite without selectivity, while selective flocculation could be realized by the combination of water glass and CMC. It is because that competitive adsorption would take place on these two kinds of mineral when water glass and CMC are used together. On the surface of ilmenite, the adsorption ability of CMC is stronger than that of water glass, so that CMC can absorb to the same extent irrespective of the presence of a pre-adsorbed layer of water glass and ilmenite particles is flocculated by CMC. The same cannot be said of the titanaugite phase as water glass strongly adsorbs onto the titanaugite, and the adsorption of CMC is hindered. Therefore, the titanaugite particles keep dispersion. Furthermore, the flotation of fine ilmenite particles is feasible as the ilmenite floccules could react with sodium oleate. In the flotation separation of Panzhihua ilmenite ore, the recovery of TiO2 increased from 52.63% to 68.28% by selective flotation. Keywords: ilmenite, flotation, selective flocculation, adsorption

Since Schönert, 1980 a multiplicity of scientists have dedicated themselves intensively to the scientific investigation of wet grinding in agitated media mills. The achieved research results led to a clearly improved understanding of the comminution mechanism in wet operated agitated media mills and in consequence also to clearly more efficient machines. In contrast to this the standard of knowledge on dry grinding in agitated media mills is still very small. The practical experience from numerous plants shows however that the transferability of knowledge from wet grinding to the dry grinding regarding transport phenomena and comminution behaviour, influence of the operating parameters and also wear is very limited. In the industrial application above all the continuous mode of operation is preferred. The main problem which has to be solved in agitated media mills is minor the comminution itself, than rather the question of the trouble free material supply and material extraction as well as the cooling of the mill. The agitated media mill MaxxMill® offers an innovative concept to overcome the feeding and extraction problem with its rotating grinding chamber, the eccentrically mounted agitators as well as the eccentric flow deflector with integrated material supply. Because of the pneumatic extraction of the ground materi-al cooling of the milling chamber is not necessary. On a MaxxMill ® laboratory mill with a 5 litre grinding chamber volume extensive parameter studies were carried out to study the influence of operating parameters on the continuous dry grinding of quartz sand. The test were performed in a continuous single pass operation without classification of the final product. Apart from the influence of the throughput rate on fineness above all the influence of the agitator and grinding chamber speed as well as the grinding media size was examined.

"In view of the present situation that the traditional environment friendly depressants for galena aren’t very effective in the separation of mixed concentrate including copper sulfide and lead sulfide, this research describes a new environment friendly depressant PD-1 and investigates its effects and mechanism in the separation of chalcopyrite and galena. This study is carried out through flotation tests, analysis of infrared spectra and absorption measurements. It is shown that when O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z200) is used as collector, chalcopyrite and galena can be separated in the presence of PD-1 under appropriate conditions. Therefore, it can be concluded that PD-1 has an excellent depression ability and great selectivity for galena. Meanwhile, analysis of infrared spectra demonstrates that PD-1 can strongly absorb on the galena surface by chemical interaction with Pb2+, while it hardly absorbs on the chalcopyrite surface. In addition, the results of absorption measurements reveal that competitive adsorption occurs on the galena surface between PD-1 and Z200, PD-1 can block the absorption of Z200 on the galena surface. However, PD-1 has a little effect on the absorption of Z200 on the chalcopyrite surface under above conditions. What’s more, the hydrophilic groups of PD-1 molecules can make galena effectively depressed. The results of mechanism analysis are in accordance with those of flotation tests.INTRODUCTION In the processing of copper-lead sulfide ores, the process, copper increase and lead reduction (Zhang et al., 2017) after reagents removal of rough concentrate produced by mixed flotation of chalcopyrite and galena, is usually adopted. However, as a result of tight symbiosis and the similar flotability of chalcopyrite and galena, the separation is difficult (Hu and Feng, 2006). There are 3 kinds of depressants for galena in the separation of chalcopyrite and galena concentrate,including dichromate, sulfite and combined depressants of organic or inorganic reagents (Wei, 2012). As dichromate would cause serious environmental pollution, it is gradually banned to be used in industry (Xu et al., 2017; Lin et al., 2017). what’s more, due to the need of acidic slurry, using sulfite is not conductive to the maintenance of equipment and stable production(Wang, 1999). As for the combined depressants, they also have disadvantages of complex pharmaceutical system and no ideal separation effect (Wei and Sun, 2008). Therefore, the development of new safe and effective depressants for galena is a research focus for researchers in the minerals processing (Chen, 2000). In this paper, a new type of organic depressant PD-1 is applied to the copper-lead separation process of ""copper increase and lead reduction"" using Z200 as the collector. In addition, the performances and mechanism of its depression to galena are studied emphatically."

"Predicting the performance of plant-scale comminution circuits is essential to monitor the energy use and product size distribution, allowing us to control and optimize the whole process. In the light of this issue, with the assist of recent technologies, simulation techniques utilize the chance of putting the theory into practice in the most accurate way. For this purpose, this study aims to evaluate and optimize the efficiency of a plant-scale ball mill circuit by using perfect-mixing ball mill model on a simulation environment. The comminution circuit is selected from a specific copper-ore processing plant in Turkey. The essential parameters which are required for this study such as fresh feed Bond work index, size distribution etc. are determined by laboratory experiments. The forecasted data which are calculated by third-party software will be compared by the industrial operating data, in order to determine the performance of comminution circuit. In addition to that, this methodology provides a greater ability to analyse, optimize and understand the comminution circuit of ore treatment plant. The authors believe this work will provide supplementary data for further studies on simulation and subsequent optimization of comminution circuits.INTRODUCTION By the assist of mathematical models of the grinding mills and classifiers, simulation of the grinding circuits become more common in comminution because it is relatively economical and able to consider many variables simultaneously. It’s proceeds depends on the accuracy of the models and capability of reflect real operations. Computer-based simulation studies would provide the quantified information about the effects of the proposed changes on the comminution circuit performance in terms of size distribution, mass flow rates, equipment efficiency etc. Then the mentioned data used in order to check the suitability of the current equipment to the modified conditions, and for equipment selection. The outputs of circuit could also be used to estimate downstream flotation circuit performance because the general aim in this study is to The aim of the study is to investigate optimum operating variables and achieve p(80) size of 57 µm and 64 % of -36 µm particle in hydrocyclone overflow stream, which is optimum for that porphyritic copper ore for best concentrate recovery after flotation process in specific copper ore comminution circuit by using modelling and simulation techniques. Sampling survey was carried on the fine ore bin in order to perform Bond work index test and determine work index value (Wi). Thereafter mass balancing, using the size distribution data and tonnages, models for ball mills and hydrocyclone were developed. Finally, the circuit performance were investigated by computer simulations via JKSimMet software."

"Preliminary tests were done to determine whether comminution by electric-pulse disaggregation, or E-PD (cf. Rudashevsky et al; 1995), was more effective than using conventional crushing for Merensky Reef ore. A hand sample of the Merensky Reef was sawn in two: then one sub-sample was comminuted to .2 mm using E-PD at the University of Minnesota, and the other sub-sample was crushed to .2 mm using a conventional jaw crusher at CANMET.The products of the electric-pulse disaggregation and jaw crusher were fractionated by sieving and by a separation using a heavy liquid with a specific gravity of 3.3, because the proportion of platinum-group minerals (PGM) and sulphides to silicate minerals is very low. Thus, four mineral separates were produced: .2000 + 833 µm, -833 +208 µm, -208-µm float and -208-µm sink. All the mineral separates were studied by image analysis (Lastra et al; 1998). The main objective was to determine the liberation of gangue (silicate minerals), chromite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pentlandite and PGM. In the case of the PGM, a specific image analysis program was written to search and measure these minerals.The results show that the liberation obtained for gangue was similar (~99%) using either method of comminution. However, the liberation obtained for chromite (~89% vs. ~38%), pentlandite (~50% vs. 1%), pyrrhotite (~56% vs. ~38%), and PGM (~56% vs. ~1%) by E-PD was higher than that obtained by conventional jaw crusher, whereas the liberation obtained for chalcopyrite (~20% vs. ~71%) by E-PD was lower. Nevertheless, the image analysis of the products also showed that the PGM are strongly associated with pentlandite. Thus, for the Merensky Reef, liberation of pentlandite from the gangue minerals and chromite is important to recover more of the PGM. This maybe be significant because, in addition to increased recovery of platinum-group minerals (PGM), Merensky Reef pentlandite also contains significant quantities of valuable platinum-group elements like Pd and Rh (Cabri, 1981; Cabri 1988, Kinloch 1982, Peyerl 1983). Hence, the results indicate that for the Merensky Reef, electric-pulse disaggregation would represent a better comminution operation than a conventional jaw crusher would. In addition, the greatly improved liberation for chromite may find application for the PGM-rich UG2 chromitite."

"Previous studies have shown that the floatability of chalcopyrite in seawater at highly alkaline conditions is significantly affected by the presence of clays. The reason is that the species of calcium and magnesium present in seawater under those conditions may act as a bridge between the surfaces of clay and chalcopyrite, generating massive aggregates that then depress. In this context, the objective of this work is to analyze the impact of pretreated seawater with low amount of calcium and magnesium ions on the recovery of a sulphide copper mineral with high kaolinite content as clay. The seawater pre-treatment is done by the addition of sodium hydroxide in a high carbon dioxide environment. The chemical reactions realized under these conditions lead to the formation and precipitation of calcium and magnesium species that are subsequently removed by vacuum filtration. The pre-treated seawater is then used in flotation tests at pH 11 for copper sulphide, where the mineral is synthetically prepared by mixtures of chalcopyrite, kaolinite, and quartz. When comparing the flotation results for different types of water, including seawater and pre-treated seawater, a significant effect is observed: as the seawater hardness decreases, which comprises the calcium and magnesium ions, the recovery of chalcopyrite is increased. However, the effect is markedly enhanced in the presence of kaolinite. Therefore, the results indicate that sodium hydroxide and carbon dioxide are able to remove different species of calcium and magnesium from seawater and could improve the chalcopyrite recovery with high kaolinite content. INTRODUCTIONIn many cases, mineral deposits are found in arid areas with little access to water resources. Water is a fundamental element to carry out the unit operations that achieved the separation of valuable minerals (especially in concentration operations). Seawater has acquired an interesting role in recent years (Cisternas and Moreno, 2014); in fact, it seems to be one of the few viable options to ensure the sustainability of the mining industry in arid zones. At present, there are numerous experiences of industries that use or have used this resource, either by submitting the seawater to a desalination treatment by reverse osmosis or by applying it directly, without desalting. The latter case may involve significant economic benefits (for example, by avoiding the investment of building a desalination plant) and in some cases some operational benefits. A positive aspect is that in general terms the foaming in the saline medium is much more efficient compared to fresh water (Quinn et al., 2014; Castro et al., 2010). Some reports show that the foaming doses required to achieve a certain quality of bubbles are remarkably reduced, reaching exceptional cases such as Xstrata's Raglan concentrator, where it did not even include foaming to carry out the operation. This fact is quite promising, considering that some researchers have stated that controlling the quality of bubbles and foam could float minerals through coarse particles. This would lead to multiple benefits, such as energy savings by avoiding excessive grinding and a lower presence of fine ore that causes major problems in water recovery operations by gravitation (such as thickening) and in tailings management. However, seawater also causes significant challenges in multiple operations (Jeldres et al., 2017, 2016; Castro et al., 2010), as for example in minerals with high clay content (Uribe et al., 2017). In fresh water, the presence of clays minerals in ores is already a major problem in the flotation stages since the operation becomes difficult to be controlled, and operators are commonly forced to increase the consumption of reagents because the collectors are deposited on the clays' surfaces reducing froth stability (Farrokhpay and Bradshaw, 2012). "Three important components of stirred tanks involved in energy consumption, the impellers and baffles, were investigated to intensify the agitation pretreatment on the flotation of nickel ores. Flotation tests revealed that the stirred tanks with two impellers had an advantage over those with one impeller in intensifying agitation pretreatment, and the higher agitation speed led to better flotation performance of nickel ores. Installation and removal of baffles were also employed in the stirred tanks, and flotation tests demonstrated that with baffles, the flotation grade increased significantly. These agitator design improvements were used to demonstrate that the energy supplied to the system significantly influences the flotation recovery and that if the energy consumption of the agitation pretreatment is ideal, flotation efficiency can be improved. Data from full-scale operations backed up these results.INTRODUCTIONThe flotation recovery of nickel-copper sulphide ore at the Western China nickel mine has historically been difficult due to the presence of large amounts of serpentine minerals (Feng, et al., 2012). Many studies reported that serpentine minerals tend to have a positive potential at pH values up to 9.5, while sulphides (such as pentlandite and chalcopyrite) have a low isoelectric point(Feng, et al., 2012). Serpentine minerals can form surface coatings on negatively charged sulphides surface due to electrostatic attraction when they interact with each other, which may also reduce collector adsorption and increase the hydrophilicity of the sulphide particles. In order to improve the flotation of nickel sulphides, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium silicate, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and other agents are used to disperse serpentine coating from sulphide surfaces in the flotation of the Jinchuan deposit and other nickel ores in China ( Kirjavainen and Heiskanen, 2007; Lu, et al., 2011). However, it is difficult to improve of the sulphide flotation due to the high dosage and the lack of selectivity."

As ore grades of existing and new ore deposits continue to decrease there is ever increasing pressure to decrease operating costs to maintain profitabitabitiy at existing mine sites and for new projects. The accepted solution to this dilemma in most cases is to increase treatment rate, leading to a coarser grind, at the expense of marginal decreases in recovery. The recovery loss is usually associated with losses of liberated and composite coarse material. This paper will review the practice of coarse particle flotation, including the reagent chemistry, cell hydrodynamics, froth stability, entrainment and flotation cell design, all parameters important to the recovery of coarse liberated and composite particles. This will provide a better understanding of opportunities to improve the recovery of coarse particles. Some examples will be provided.

The paper presents a way of determining relations between ash content in coal, particle size and particle density by means of regression, multidimensional Morgenstern distribution functions and kernel approximation. The three-dimensional random vector (D, ?, ?), where D is a random variable describing particle size, ? - random variable describing particle density and ? - random variable describing ash content, where function ?=?(d, ?) is obtained by means of regressive function. The multidimensional Morgenstern distribution functions and kernel estimators with the use of Gauss function were applied to approximate the functions f(d, ?, ?) and f1(d, ?). This approach is a new way of multidimensional description of grained materials such as coal and it also allows to evaluate material features more properly than the classical statistical approach. The results were verified statistically.

"The copper mining industry in Chile and perhaps in other countries as well is faced with the challenge to implement the best practices in order to achieve a sustainable and more environment-friendly growth. Relationships between mining industry and society have been historically complex due to its environmental impacts. Whereas the ore grade has declined continuously, this has involved an intensive energy and water consumption thus increasing operational costs at different stages of the concentration process. In the case of copper sulphide ore concentration, froth flotation is the main technology used worldwide. The amount of the different chemical reagents used in flotation plants (i.e., collectors, depressants, frothers and modifiers) affects significantly production costs and has a negative effect on the environment as well. The objective of this research work was to evaluate the use of biosolids and their main components (i.e., glucose, proteins and humic substances) as more environment-friendly flotation collectors for chalcopyrite and molybdenite. For this purpose, microflotation tests were conducted in a modified Hallimond tube. In addition, FTIR and zeta potential experiments were performed to investigate the interaction of biosolids with these sulphide minerals. Biosolids and their main components may interact through physical and chemical ways due to different affinities with such sulphide minerals as chalcopyrite, pyrite and molybdenite, which are present in copper sulphide ores. In alkaline pHs, biosolids and their main components make the zeta potential of the sulphide minerals investigated more negative. These results may provide important information concerning the behavior of the main sulphide minerals in the concentration of copper sulphide ores at industrial scale, wherein mill processes could affect their surfaces properties. Therefore, biosolids and their main components may open an opportunity to be used in copper sulphide flotation plants to partially replace conventional reagents, which are more hazardous and less environment-friendly."
