The North-West Russia for 70 years is one the main producers of Cu, Ni, Co, Al, P, REE, Zr, Ti, Ta, Nb, Fe ores and other minerals in the Europe. The largest mining companies locates in the Murmansk region, and they extracts about 100 mln. tons of ores and damps up to 250 mln. tons of waste annually. Nevertheless an environmental situation in the region is stable due to rational management and treatment of wastes on a base of the Noosphere Concept for Nature-using suggested by Vladimir Vernadsky. The Concept was performed practically in the Fersman’ scheme of “non-waste mining and metallurgical complex”, published in the monograph “Minerals of the Kola Peninsula: current status – analyses – prognoses” (1941) and served till now as a sort of “Bible” for industry managers lightening a strategy for an industrial “trophic chain”. The recent status of this scheme is shown on the picture below, and one can see that our concept is coincide with modern ideology known as the “Industrial Ecology”. Moving along this mainstream in the Kola Peninsula since 1929, when the first mining company “Apatit” was established, we provided the water close circuit in mineral dressing plants, hydrometallurgical treatment of slag and tailings, productions of building materials and adsorbents of wastes. The innovation set of technologies designed by the Kola Science Centre allow recently to involve tailing damps in re-exploitation as the technogenic deposits of valuable raw materials for fertilizers, tanning and cleaning agents, pigments, concretes and etc.

In this study, batch flotation experiments were conducted to recover rare earth elements (REE) from an REE ore deposit in the Mushgai Khudag area, Mongolia. Apatite was found to be the major REE mineral while monazite and xenomite were observed as minor minerals. The main purpose was to float apatite to increase the REE content. Oleic acid was used as collector and MIBC was used as frother. Sodium silicate was used as a depressant for iron compounds. NaOH was used to adjust the pH of the flotation to about 9.5~10.0. The particle size was 90% less than 152 ?m (- 100 mesh). The content of REE elements was analysed by ICP - OES to determine the contents of REE such as Ce, La, Nd, Pr and Y. When sodium silicate was used, the best result was obtained using 0.2 mL of sodium silicate, 2 mL of oleic acid and 2 mL of MIBC. Under these conditions, the recovery of REE was about 78% and the grade of the first froth product was 42,995 ppm Ce, 24,088 ppm La, 14,236 ppm Nd, 4,388 ppm Pr and 1,570 ppm Y. When conducting flotation after iron minerals were removed by magnetic separation, a better result was obtained; with 2 mL of oleic acid, 2 mL of MIBC and no sodium silicate, the recovery was increased to 90% and the grade was also increased to 58,600 ppm Ce, 28,624 ppm La, 17,160 ppm Nd, 5,348 ppm Pr and 1,971 ppm Y.

Previous research on particle damage during high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) crushing was limited by the resolution of point-projection micro CT systems and the extent of damage was described by the percent of particles cracked for different crushing methods as determined at a voxel resolution of 40 microns. With recent advances in X-ray optics, the resolution afforded with point-projection micro CT systems has been improved by at least an order of magnitude using a lens-based X-ray micro CT system. With the use of X-ray lens imaging the resolution is determined by the lens rather than by the spot size of the micro-focus X-ray source. The high resolution X-ray micro CT (HRXMT) system made by Xradia with a voxel resolution of less than 1 micron is now being used for the characterization of particle damage during HPGR crushing. In this way, the direct 3-D determination of the internal damage of crushed ore particles which vary from 40 mm down to 100 microns in size is being studied at a voxel resolution of a few microns. The number, size, and shape of cracks can now be measured at this improved resolution and for the first time the specific crack surface area distributions of the crushed product can be calculated from HRXMT images using specially designed software tools for 3D analysis. Results from selected crushing operations are presented. Copper ore particles from HPGR crushing at high pressure (6 N/mm2) are severely damaged having crack specific surface areas as great as 10 mm2/mm3. Research and Development Centre for Iron and Steel (RDCIS) a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is continuously engaged in reduction of energy consumption at SAIL plants by implementing innovative and new concepts. In this regard, continuous efforts are being made to recover waste heat in Sinter Plants. This paper discusses existing waste heat recovery measures taken and proposed measures planned in Sinter Plants. One such effort is on waste heat recovery from sinter coolers. Hot sinter is discharged to the crusher at the end of the sinter machine at a temperature of 500 to 800°C. Temperature of hot sinter is brought down to nearly 100°C in the sinter cooler with air-cooling. The air after cooling the sinter is generally discharged to the atmosphere at about 225 to 300°C. It is planned to recover heat from the hot air that is being released to atmosphere and heat the process water, which is being added at ambient temperature in mixing drum at Bhilai Steel Plant. The temperature of raw sinter mix will be raised by addition of this hot water, which will help in improving the productivity of sinter machine. It is estimated that Waste heat recovery to the tune of 1.5 to 2.0 Gcal/h is possible with reduction in CO2 emissions in the range of 4000 to 5000 ton/year. The novel approach that is being adopted is addition of hot water in mixing drum for higher sinter productivity for the first time in India. "Water is a necessary process medium in mineral processing. For the operations where fresh water is not available, sea water could be used as an alternative processing medium to replace the fresh water if we would have built a solid understanding of the interfacial science and flotation chemistry of sulfide minerals in sea water. In this research, micro flotation of chalcopyrite and pyrite in deionized water and sea water were investigated. For chalcopyrite, the recovery starts to drop from pH 10 in deionized water and from pH 9 in sea water, and the flotation recovery close to 100% before it drops. We can found from the results that chalcopyrite flotation is depressed much at pH 11 in sea water when much white precipitate is found. For pyrite, the flotaion recovery changs a lot in deionized water with 1*10-5 M potasium amyl xanthate (PAX) as collector. It’s relatively high at pH 8~10 compared with that at pH<8 and pH>10. While in sea water, the trend is almost the same as that of chalcopyrite. Zeta potential measurements and chemical equilibrium calculation were used to find out that magnesium hydroxide species coats on the surfaces at high pH in sea water are the main reason for depressing the chalcopyrite and pyrite flotation. Through understanding the interfacial science and the solution chemistry of sea water and its impact on processing efficiency, this research will not only helps reduce the use of fresh water to minimize the disposal of spent water for environment protection, but also enhance the recovery of valuable minerals in froth flotation."

The application of new collectors is considered to improve the beneficiation of Polish sedimentary complex copper ores from the Legnica-Glogow Copper Basin (SW Poland), the upgradeability of which becomes more difficult because of ores grade declining. One group of potential collectors is represented by nonpolar reagents. According to the available literature data, only selected sulfides float in the presence of the nonpolar liquids. The paper presents laboratory scale flotation results for the main sulfide minerals occurring in the Polish copper ores applying either thiol (potassium ethyl xanthate) or nonpolar (aqueous emulsion of n-dodecane) collectors. The investigated feed contained 1.91 % Cu in the form of sulfide minerals such as bornite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and covellite. Other sulfide minerals including galena, pyrite and sphalerite were also present in the samples. Several flotation tests with various doses of each collector were conducted. Mineralogical analyses of flotation products were carried out and the results compared. A comparison of the results indicated that all sulfide minerals floated well with high recoveries ranging from 91 % to 99 % in the presence of the thiol collector. The use of the nonpolar collector provided results in flotation of sulfide minerals with different terminal recoveries from 61 % for chalcopyrite to 100 % for sphalerite. The most significant differences in flotation in the presence of both types of collector under various conditions of upgrading were observed for chalcocite, chalcopyrite and covellite. Similar flotation results were observed for sphalerite and galena for both collectors. The studies confirmed selective flotation of sulfides from the copper sulfide ores of the Legnica-Glogow Copper Basin in the presence of nonpolar collectors.

"In conventional flotation, fluoride ions selectively would react with the aluminum site on the microcline surface and produce negative charged sites for amine to be adsorbed (Smith, 1976). According to this view, aluminum site is considered as a key feature in feldspar flotation. Generally, fluoride ion has been widely used as a modifying agent in silicate flotation. Since O'Meara's patent appeared on HF -amine reagent system to selectively float feldspar from quartz in 1942, relatively few contributions have been devoted in this issue. The reason might be that the process works very well, and accordingly there is no initiative to investigate in this area. However, due to the awareness of international community to restrict using of hazardous reagents like HF, sound engineering practice to search for alternative methods, not utilizing HF, has been launched. Inspection of literature, one can find several works dealing with this issue.In this contribution, the effect of ethoxylation of long chain alcohols on the quartz and feldspar flotation behaviors was investigated for surfactants of the octylphenol polyoxyethylene family. The tests were carried out with an average of 7.5 (Triton X 114), 9.5 (Triton X 100), 30 (Triton X305), 40 (Triton X 405) and 70 (TritonX 705) oxyethylene units. Electrokinetic and flotation studies on quartz have shown that at low pH values, quartz could be floated with polyoxyethylene octytlphenols. The possible mode of adsorption of these nonionic surfactants may be suggested to be due to hydrogen bonding between the oxygen of ether and hydrogen in the free hydroxyl groups on quartz surface. It was anticipated that the selectivity between quartz and microcline would decrease as oxyethylenic chain length increases."

Research at Cytec over the past two decades has shown that the traditional approach for ore metallurgical characterization (typically conducted via laboratory-scale batch flotation tests), which involves changing reagents and conditions one-factor-at-a-time, leads to several pitfalls. The chemical solution thus selected has a narrow un-optimized window of performance and will likely fail in the plant. A holistic approach, called the Flotation Matrix 100? process for ore metallurgical characterization, was developed at Cytec about a decade ago and has been successfully used to develop robust reagent solutions for several operations around the world. The premise for the approach is that flotation outcome from ores is variable and is determined by complex interactions between various physical, chemical and operational factors. A key component of the process is the use of efficient multivariate designs focused on the chemistry aspects (reagents and pulp chemistry), which helps identify the best processing conditions for each ore type, as well as the conditions resulting in poor performance. It also includes advanced statistical methods for dealing with the complexity and variability of experimental data. The holistic approach is illustrated in this paper with a case study on Pb/Zn ores. Using just 18 carefully designed batch tests, it is possible to partially simulate the behavior of each ore type in the plant. The best conditions for each ore type, along with the conditions to avoid, are identified. Along with this, insights are obtained into the reasons for high reagent dosages for certain ore types, and interactions between variables. In recent years, coal beneficiation has gotten considerable attention. Selective oil agglomeration has been accepted as the best method to produce clean coal with a high removal of pyrite sulphur. In this study, spherical oil agglomeration of Datong coal fines was carried out using diesel oil as a bridging liquid. The oil agglomeration has a surface properties based on coal cleaning technique. The effects of fundamental parameters have been investigated including the concentration of bridging liquid, the size of coal particle, the solid content of slurry, the agitation time and rate, pH, surfactants on the agglomeration performance and various salts on the ash rejection and removal of pyrite of the agglomerated products. The optimum conditions of particle size, diesel concentration, solid content, agitation speed and time, pH and the dosage of active agent have been determined as less than 8µm, 20wt%, 1200r/min and 10 minutes, 7.5g/t and 100g/t, respectively. Under these conditions the ash content in the products can be achieved 1.5% below, the ash rejection was up to 92%. It has been observed that ionic strength of the aqueous medium affects the agglomeration performance. The precombustion coal cleaning process based on improved selective agglomeration results in high ash and pyrite sulphur removals. Over 80% removal of pyrite sulphur can be achieved from run-of-mine coals by offering a more cost-effective sulphur reduction solution rather than any other SO2 removal technology. In addition, the removal of pyrite sulphur is very necessary for not only the prevention of environmental pollution but also economical reasons.

"The traditional lignin separation process from the precipitated suspension creates severe filtration problems by plugging of the filter medium due to the small particle size (20 to 60 µm) of the suspended lignins. The plugging causes further problems in the successive processing of the filter cake. A new lignin separation process has been developed at the Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) Cottbus as a part of the Research and Development and Demonstration (R & D & D) project "LignoBioFuel". The new developed process separates lignin in the form of granules with diameters ranging from 100 µm to 300 µm. The restrainment of the granule’s size in their successive treatments is expected to result in higher filtration efficiencies and reduction in plugging of filter mediums. To evaluate the filtration efficiency, the filtration resistance of the produced granules as well as the conventional suspensions has been investigated. The results show that there is a 60 to 80 % filtration efficiency increase and around 60 % reduction in plugging of filter mediums with the lignin granules in comparison to the conventional suspensions. Furthermore the successive processing of lignin granules was easier due to their porous structures removing the impurities such as adherent acids and salts. The purity of the separated lignin was measured with their sulphur (reduced from 7 % to 2.7 %) and ash (reduced from 46 % to 0.5 %) contents. The newly developed process has displayed better results in comparison to that of the conventional process. The new process displays high potentials in optimizing and improving the present state of the art treatments and is promising several ecological, economical and environmental improvements."

"Lamps and lighting products are the most commonly used electrical products around the globe. With the improvement in lamp technologies, lighting products have grown complex and hence require an improved recycling process. The LED lamps consist of various valuable metals such as iron, copper, aluminum, chromium, silver, and gold, as well as non-metals such as glass, plastics, and fibers. In addition, there are also traces of hazardous substances such as lead, arsenic, and mercury. A major step in the recovery process is size reduction, and researchers have suggested that up to 40% of the total valuable material is lost during the shredding and grinding processes. SELFRAG is a high voltage selective fragmentation comminution technology that uses high voltage pulses in a water medium to efficiently separate the metals at a coarser size without generating many fine particles. It has been proposed that during the fragmentation process of electronic waste (e-waste), the metals can be separated without fine grinding. This research considers the applicability of high voltage pulse fragmentation for LED lamps. Eight different types of LED lamps were processed through the SELFRAG unit at varying pulses to study metal liberation. The product obtained was characterized for metal liberation, metal grades, and liberation analysis. The specific energy consumption for this size reduction process was also monitored. INTRODUCTION Lamps and bulbs are the most commonly used electrical products in homes, offices, industrial operations, and streets. According to Energy Star research (2006), an average US household has more than 40 sockets for light bulbs and consumes approximately 2100kWh every year for lighting. The development in lamp technology has pushed the boundary for newer products. The LED lamps have been taking over the market from the incandescent bulbs and compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). According to the US Department of Energy (2012) and myLEDlight.com (2007), LED lamps have several benefits over other lamps. LEDs produce light hemi-spherically, which increases their efficiency in directional light emission. It has higher breakage resistance from vibration or transportation. LED lamps use up to 90% less power than incandescent bulbs thus making them highly energy efficient; They have a longer lifespan, lasting 10 times longer than a CFL and 133 times longer than the traditional incandescent bulb. Because of all the benefits, Smallwood (2014) suggested that the market of LED lamps will grow to $12.2 billion by 2018."

"In the article carrying out technique of experiments for estimation of power efficiency of process of crushing in cone crushers «in a layer». The conformity of the granulometric characteristics of the crushed products obtained as a result of the tests, the theoretical equations for the size characteristics, and the choice of the optimal equation for the prediction of the granulometric characteristics of the final products obtained by crushing ""in a layer"". Optimization of granulometric composition of power of crushers working ""in a layer"" is carried out with the purpose of reduction of the electric power consumption at reception of a product of required quality. As a result of the experiments, dependencies are obtained, the relevance and applicability of the crushing process ""in the layer"" for obtaining crushed stone of improved quality is proved. INTRODUCTION A number of equations have been proposed for calculating the breakage energy. These include equations by Kirpichev and Kick, Rittinger and Bond (Bogdanov, Olevsky, 1982). Another equation for calculating the specific breakage work in breakage by impact and in stratum was proposed by Devyatkin (Boiko, 2003). In these equations, the breakage energy is proportional to the particle size raised to some power. In the equation proposed by Devyatkin, the ore piece thickness or the feed average diameter is used. The relationship between energy and breakage can be expressed as an equation (Lynch, 1981; Tikhonov, no. 3, 2008) where k is a coefficient characterizing the energy parameter depending on the strength of the feed, l is size in microns. The Rittinger formula is obtained for n = 2, the Kirpichev-Kick formula for n = 1, the Bond formula for n = 1.5. For n = 3 or higher, the equation describes fine and ultrafine grinding. R. Hookey proposed a formula (Lynch, 1981, Tikhonov, no. 3, 2008), where the size exponent n is substituted by a size function In all of the above equations, a single value of the feed and product size is used; for example, in the Bond equation, size is defined as the particle size of the 20% oversize (P80 and F80). However, a single size value can represent multiple distributions, making that the Bond method inappropriate for determining the size (Lynch, 1981). Describing an equation for estimating the grinding energy will allow to design the electric drive and ore preparation circuit for the given breakage method."

"The selective separation of pentlandite from serpentine was investigated using the magnetic coating-magnetic separation by conditioning slurry pH value, stirring speed, magnetic field intensity and controlling dosages of sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) and sodium oleate (SO). The optimal conditions were obtained as follows: the natural pH of 6.8-7.2, stirring speed of 2300 rpm, magnetic field intensity of 200 kA m-1, SHMP of 60 mg L-1, and SO of 400 mg L-1. Results showed that the Ni grade was 21.4% with the Ni recovery of 81.4% and MgO content of 3.8%. FTIR indicated that coagulant of SO preferentially adsorbed onto pentlandite and magnetite particles while hardly adsorbing onto serpentine particles when dispersant of SHMP was used. Thus, the selective magnetic coating of magnetite on pentlandite surfaces could be formed due to the formation of hydrophobic surfaces on pentlandite and magnetite particles. Calculations of DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) confirmed that interactions between magnetite and pentlandite particles were much stronger than that between magnetite and serpentine due to the existence of hydrophobic interactions with the addition of SO. Consequently, the pentlandite was successfully separated from serpentine. Therefore, this study exhibits the potential to separate pentlandite from serpentine minerals for practical applications and thus deserves further study.INTRODUCTION It has been well known that the separation of pentlandite from serpentine is a worldwide challenging issue in the processing of sulphide nickel-copper ores. Because the serpentine mainly causes the high pulp viscosity and slime coating on the pentlandite, which interferes with the flotation process of pentlandite (Cao et al., 2016; Feng et al., 2012). The fibrous mineral of serpentine preferentially attaches to the air bubble, forming bubble-macrofibers aggregates, which are easily floated into the nickel concentrates, resulting in the decline of Ni grade (Alvarez-Silva et al., 2016; Kusuma et al., 2014). In addition, the serpentine adheres to the pentlandite as hetero-aggregation or slime coating via the electrical interaction between a positively charged serpentine and a negatively charged pentlandite, which decreases the hydrophobicity of pentlandite and reduces the collector adsorption (Feng et al., 2013). In other words, the presence of serpentine or the occurrence of aggregates (including slime coating and bubble-macrofibers aggregates) seriously affects the flotation process and deteriorates the flotation of pentlandite. Therefore, we propose magnetic separation to recover pentlandite from serpentine with the magnetic coating technology, which is different from forth flotation."

"The most common technique for selection of grinding equipment is the Bond method implying determination of a ball mill work index (BWi). The method is perfect for greenfield projects where a ball mill must be sized to grind an ore to 80% passing 75-100 µm. Finer grinding will require application of specific correction factors to a standard equation since initially the method was not designated for sizing of fine (minus 75 µm) grinding mills. Significant issues are related to selection of grinding equipment for treatment of originally fine materials when the standard procedure is not applicable. In 1984, Levin published his special technique titled as “A proposed test for the determination of the grindability of fine materials”, where he offered to use the standard Bond ball mill for determination of a specific grinding energy. However, this method did not meet with wide recognition. In 2017, Institute TOMS under guidance of JKMRC’s specialists performed a testwork aimed at verification of a new universal technique for determination of grindability of initially fine materials. An object was to test three aged tailings samples for the subsequent modelling of comminution circuit and evaluation of potential throughput of the existing ball mills with final grind size of ?80 passing 53 µm. In parallel with development of the universal approach, TOMS’ specialists carried out tests according to the Levin method in order to compare the data resulted from two methods. The results from lab ball mill testing on three products following the alternative test methods are presented in this paper along with the testing methodology and results analysis. Specific energy was calculated for regrinding of the materials to the required size. Difference of the examined methods and assessment of their applicability for sizing of full-scale equipment are explored."

Electrostatic separation is a dry separation technique usable for many applications in the mining- and recycling industries. At the Chair of Mineral Processing intensified research has been done on this topic during the last years. One challenge was to measure the triboelectric charging of fine mineral particles in a triboelectric charging device consisting of an electrically insulated polyethylene rotor/stator assembly. These tests, performed on monomineralic samples, were accomplished in a climate chamber. It was shown that charging of minerals not only depends on rotor speed, feed rate and atmospheric circumstances but also on the properties of the applied electrostatic field. Tests on pure calcite in contact with the polyethylene rotor/stator system resulted in specific triboelectric charges up to +10 nC/g at low relative humidity. With more water present in the surrounding atmosphere, these charging values decreased significantly. However, at higher relative humidity, triboelectric charge values could be maintained after an electrostatic field of positive polarity was applied. Similarly, charging behavior was found with other hydrophilic minerals. The idea behind all these tests was to find the largest charging difference between minerals occurring together in a deposit and to be able to charge them oppositely, assuming that this means good sort ability in an electrostatic separator. The results gained from these investigations are shown. After having obtained many results on charging pure minerals, it became interesting to test the applicability of the charging tendencies on electrostatic separation of fines <100 µm. In order to do so, a separator for fine polymineralic powders was developed, constructed and combined with the triboelectric charging device, all being set up in a climate chamber. This new so-called coax-separator is presented along with first test-results.

Germany-made AFX-100 multi-grade fluidized classifier, with exquisite built-in structure and unique novel design, materializes not only advanced and efficient classification, but also precise particle distribution and safe operation, in addition to lower energy consumption and operational cost. It, simultaneously in place of screw grader, water cyclone, and fine mesh sieve, is equipped with multi-function, and indicates superior advantage in comparison with other else grading facilities. As the third-generation equipment, which is efficient and modern, it, in China and therefore all over the world, will find wide application in processing both fine and ultra-fine iron ore resources. Industrial test, carried out in Benxi Steel?s Waitoushan Iron Mine, shows efficient classification, i.e., ?74µm particle contents in coarse, medium and fine products come to 6.09%,11.82% and 82.73%, respectively, while qualitative and quantitative efficiencies end up by 74.38% and 87.66%, respectively. Its separation efficiencies amount to 2.2 times as many as spiral classifiers, 1.8 times as hydrocyclones, and 1.3 times as vibration high-frequency fine screens. Another industrial test, which was practiced in Anshan Steel?s Donganshan Sinter Plant, indicates that classification qualitative efficiency comes to 65.06%, equal to 1.51 times as many as hydrocyclones; yield, 55.79%; -71µm particle contents in medium and coarse products, 42.02%; -71µm content in fine product, 95.42%; and concentration, 12.33%. Estimated separation indexes are as follows: Yield for concentrate at 31.22%, up 0.22% than that from general processing line; concentrate grade at 66.42%, up 1.13%; recovery ratio comes to 65.84%, up 1.28%, which, based on pilot study, results in 20 million yuan of economic return for Donganshan Floatation Plant.

"After almost 100 years, since the first commercial application began in Australia, flotation has shown an extraordinary growth and nearly 2 billion tons of ore per year are presently treated by flotation processes. During this time flotation has promoted a wide scope of research activities ranging from fundamental chemistry and hydrodynamic studies to studies of industrial operations. In general, fundamental studies have been mainly related to ideal situations. In recent years, however, large efforts have been focusing on achieving a better insight into the actual sub-processes provided by the development of new and more sophisticated instrumentation. Since the massive incorporation of flotation columns, around 15 years ago, a renewed interest in flotation fundamental studies, process modelling and new cell designs have been observed worldwide. The key role of the froth has been recognized as an independent and sometimes rate limiting process step. Thus, separation of pulp and froth process stages seems the most appropriate in terms of process modelling, diagnostic, design and scale-up purposes.In relation to flotation equipment development, until the middle of the 1970’s, only the sub-aeration mechanical cells were dominant. Since the 1980’s, the use of pneumatic cells and forced air mechanical cells has emerged strongly. Also, in the last decade, flotation equipment has shown a dramatic increase in size, reaching values of 200m3 in unitary mechanical cells and more than 300m3 in columns. The general feeling, however, is that, despite the great advance observed in terms of process knowledge, the mechanisms and principles of industrial flotation cells design and scale-up are still not fully understood.Advances in process instrumentation and control now in use allow for more efficient operations, both in metallurgical performance and savings in operating costs."

Handling of municipal solid waste (MSW) and control of its potential resources is becoming increasingly important in modern society. The OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) average on municipal waste produced in 2003 was that of around 570 kg per inhabitant. In European Union countries around half amount is of MSW landfilled. In Finland still 88% of MSW was landfilled in 2004. Since incineration reduces MSW volume significantly while producing heat energy, it has become one of the most common waste handling techniques. The shortcoming of incineration is however, that incinerated MSW is often not pre-sorted and it produces slags and ashes as side streams from which recovery of metals is difficult. This paper looks into possibilities of scrap metal recovery for recycling from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash. In order to do that, a flow sheet of physical separation methods was developed and tested with Finnish rotary furnace MSWI bottom ash. In addition, an empirical model for estimation of the recoveries of scrap metals with physical separation methods for treatment of MSWI bottom ash was developed. According to the results of this study, for 1 Mt of incinerated MSW with 30% mass reduction, a minimum resource potential of 100 kt for magnetic metal scrap of roughly 24 % grade and about 19 kt of non-magnetic metal scrap of roughly 65 % grade. In other words, 57 kg magnetic scrap and 12 kg non-magnetic scrap per inhabitant at the mentioned grades, respectively. Although wide variations of parameters affect the MSWI bottom ash quality, it can be said that a considerable amount of metals is drained into MSWI bottom ash. Results of this study show that from MSWI bottom ash significant material streams metal scrap can be reintroduced into the resource cycle which would otherwise be lost.

"Over the last 30 years the average grade of mined ore bodies has significantly decreased while the proportion of waste removal has in many cases more than doubled. This has been identified as prime reason of a major increase in energy consumption and decrease in productivity across mining operation. Metal coarse preconcentration of ROM feed grades by size rejects low grade gangue/waste material in the size range of 10-100 mm prior to grinding, typically before primary crushing. This relies on propensity of metal to preferentially deport in the fine size fractions after breakage. Metal preconcentration by size has the potential to increase energy efficiency and therefore improve mining productivity on unit of metal basis. Results of an extensive belt cut sampling campaign conducted at a major Australian Au-Cu mine operation show that for some samples between 90% of Au and 80% of Cu is in 40% of the mass at -50 mm fraction. This indicates that low grade coarse material can be removed from the circuit, doubling feed grade at half of the tonnage and therefore improve energy efficiency per unit metal produced. This response, however presents significant variability in the same order as other processing attributes such as impact hardness and flotation recovery. This has led to development of geometallurgical laboratory tests using blast hole chips and drill core facilitating mapping and population of coarse metal preconcentration signatures in long term resources and short term production models. Preferential Cu deportment by size at drilling scale can be recognised, however scales up factors are required to transform laboratory results to production responses. At 50 % of mass the drilling products underestimate the belt cut responses by 20-30 %. Bulk sampling campaign with blast hole and drill core samples spatially related was also conducted to investigate in more detail the difference between production scale and drilling scale preconcentration responses."

Hydrocyclones have been used extensively for more than 100 years to classify mineral slurries for recirculation in grinding circuits. Sometimes hydrocyclone classification is carried out in more than one stage to improve the efficiency of classification. Factors affecting separation efficiency include fluid velocity, density, and viscosity as well as the mass, size, and density of the particles. The geometric configuration also affects its efficiency; it includes parameters like cyclone diameter, underflow and overflow diameter, position of vortex finder, height of the cyclone, feed inlet geometry, and diameter etc. Besides changes in the basic parameters some modifications in cyclone has also been introduced from time to time which have affected its efficiency, some of these are :-(i).Introduction of magnetic force along with the centrifugal and drag force to control the flow of the magnetic particles inside the chamber.(ii). Introduction of sparger, air is introduced in the chamber in the form of bubbles, to control the flow of fine particles and hydrophobic particles. (iii). Introduction of dilution technologies for the dilution of thickened underflow. (iv).Introduction of new model. In spite of wide use and simple geometry, the real working principle of hydrocyclone chamber is extremely complex because of the swirling turbulent flow inside the device. In order to get more knowledge about hydrocyclones and to increase its efficiency, past 10-15 years simulation techniques are being developed. The simulation models also enabled a deeper insight into the static and dynamic behavior of hydrocyclones. Therefore, more emphasis on simulations by methods like Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element method (FEM) is given. Overall, a status review of the work carried out on the analysis of hydrocyclone performance, modeling approaches and its contribution in the efficiency of mineral processing operation is highlighted.
