The extension of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge north of Iceland has collectively been referred to as the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridges (AMOR). The AMOR extends from the northern shelf of Iceland, to the Siberian shelf in the Laptev Sea, passing en route through the Norwegian- Greenland Sea, the narrow gateway of the Fram Strait, and across the Eurasia Basin. The AMOR is 4000 km long and is divided into six super segments: 1) the Kolbeinsey Ridge, 2) the Mohns Ridge, 3) the Knipovich Ridge, 4) the Molloy Ridge, 5) the Lena Trough, and 6) the Gakkel Ridge. After continental rifting at 60-50 million years ago, around 2.5 million km2 of oceanic seafloor has formed by seafloor spreading - resulting in the formation of the Norwegian- Greenland Sea and the Eurasian Basin. This northernmost part of the global ridge system is anomalous in several ways: The seafloor spreading takes place at an ultraslow rate (less than 2 cm/y) with spreading rates decreasing northward to around 1 cm/y at the Gakkel Ridge - which is the most slow-spreading ridge on Earth. As a result, the volcanic activity along the northern part of the AMOR is low, the oceanic crust is unusually thin (around 3,5 km at the Knipovich Ridge, Kandilarov et al.2010), and the rift valley is deep (average water depth > 3 km). In the southern part of the AMOR, the ridge system is affected by the Icelandic plume and a hot spot below Jan Mayen. The ridge-plume interaction results in higher volcanic productivity, unusually thick oceanic crust (9-11 km, Kandilarov et al. 2012) and shallow ridge segments (1500-100 m). The AMOR also display contrasting spreading regimes, whereas some super segments are dominated by orthogonal spreading (Kolbeinsey and Gakkel Ridge) others are characterized by highly oblique spreading (Mohns and Knipovich ridges). Some ridge segment displays asymmetric spreading, like the Mohns Ridge where core complexes preferentially form along the northwestern flank. Together these variations in ridge characteristics results in large diversity of hydrothermal systems and associated mineral deposits.

East Diamante is a submarine volcano in the southern Mariana arc that is a complex caldera about 10 km x 5 km (elongated ENE-WSW), and breached on its northern and southwestern sectors. A large field of barite-sulfide mounds was discovered in June 2009 and revisited in July 2010 aboard the R.V. Natsushima using the Hyper-dolphin ROV. The mound field occurs on the NE flank of a cluster of resurgent domes inside the caldera. The mound field extends for more than 100 m long and is about 30 m wide, and is aligned along a NE-SW rift valley. A sample of dacite yielded a 40Ar/39Ar age of 20,000±400 years. Individual mounds are typically 1-3 m tall and 0.5-2 m wide, with lengths from about 3 to more than 5 m. The mounds are composed of barite-dominant layers interbedded with Zn-sulfide-rich barite layers. Rare inactive spires and chimneys cap some mounds. Fe and Mn oxides are currently forming small (<1 m diameter, ~0.5 m tall) subsidiary mounds on the top of some of the sulfate/sulfide mounds and drape the flanks of others. Both diffuse- and focused-flow fluids emanate from the subsidiary oxide mounds. Ages of the basal sulfate/sulfide mounds cluster around 4,000 years old based on 226Ba/Ba, whereas the oxides are less than 5 years old based on 228Th/228Ra. Most mound and chimney samples are dominated by barite and amorphous silica; sulfides occur in variable amounts that in decreasing order of abundance include sphalerite, galena, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Anglesite, cerrusite, and a Pb phosphate occur as late-stage interstitial phases. Some mound samples have fragmental textures; layered clasts composed of chalcopyrite and pyrite may have been derived from collapsed chimneys. Despite the abundance of barite, samples contain high concentrations of Zn (to 23 Wt.%), Pb (to 13 wt.%), Ag (to 500 ppm), and Au (to 15 ppm). Copper is enriched in a few mounds samples, up to 3 wt.%, but is typically <1 wt.%. Other significant metal enrichments include Sb (to 1320 ppm), Cd (to 1180 ppm), and Hg (to 55 ppm).

Recent exploration demonstrates that hydrothermal systems related to upper mantle ultramafic outcrops are common in the modern ocean. Most sites are located on slow spreading ridges with a low magmatic budget. Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide (VMS) deposits, associated with basalt, along the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) are volcanically controlled near the topographic highs at the center of the segments. Three preferential settings are identified for ultramafic sulfide mineralization: 1) Off axis, on rift valley walls, near the amagmatic ends of the segments; 2) Non-transform offsets and 3) Ultramafic dome structures at the ridge transform fault intersection. The upper surface of these domes is often interpreted as a detachment fault. Three processes are considered for driving hydrothermal cells in ultramafic rocks: 1) regional heat flow at the ridge axis 2) Cooling of a deep gabbroic intrusion and 3) exothermic heat produced during serpentinisation. Along the Mid Atlantic Ridge, four types of ultramafic hydrothermal mineralization are observed: 1) High temperature (>350°C) sulfide mineralization related to low pH fluids, (ex. The Logachev field at 14°45? N and the Rainbow field at 36°14 N); 2) Medium temperature carbonate chimneys (<100°C) related to high pH fluids (ex. The Lost City site at 30°N); 3) Low temperature diffuse venting associated with extremely high methane discharge and pervasive alteration and silicification of both volcanic and ultramafic rocks (ex : The Saldanha field at 36°34 N); 4) Stockwork mineralization and quartz veins with sulfides related to gabbroic intrusions within ultramafic rocks (15°N). When compared to mineralization in a basaltic environment, sulfide deposits are enriched in copper, zinc and specific elements related to an ultramafic rock source such as Ni and Co. They are also significantly enriched in gold which, unlike in basaltic environments, has a bimodal occurrence both in low temperature Zn-rich assemblages and in high temperature Cu-rich mineral assemblages. The Cu-Zn-Co-Au deposits along the Mid Atlantic Ridge seem to be more common than on land where few similar VMS deposits are known. We consider that ultramafic VMS deposits on slow spreading ridges constitute a specific marine type of mineralization that is less easily than back arc deposits, incorporated into the continent during obduction processes.

Results of the R/V Sonne Cruise (Edison) to the Tabar-Feni Arc from March 11 to April 5, 1994, a joint German-Canadian research cruise aboard the vessel R/V Sonne, undertook detailed mapping of the Tabar-Feni island chain, Papua New Guinea. The Tabar-Feni chain is host to several large porphyry stocks and epithermal gold deposits, including the giant Ladolam gold deposit on the island of Lihir (minimum 19 million oz. Au). The principal objective of the cruise was to map the seafloor in the vicinity of recently active alkaline volcanic islands in the Tabar-Feni chain and to characterize the tectonic setting of large high-level porphyry and epithermal gold deposits in the region. Additional work was carried out on shallow-water hot springs associated with mineralized geothermal systems on the volcanic islands. Complete sets of 1:50,000 scale (20-m contour) maps of the seafloor were produced for each of the four island groups (Feni, Tanga, Lihir, Tabar). The Lihir group was the most active and the most interesting. At least 4 (and probably 6 or 7), previously unknown volcanic cones were discovered within about 10 miles south of Lihir. The volcanoes are clearly very young and appear to have erupted along extensional faults produced by regional plate rotation. This recent volcanic activity appears to reflect recent forearc extension and represents the southward propagation of volcanic activity towards New Ireland. One volcanic cone at 1,490 m water depth is hydrothermally active, with very large areas of diffuse venting (100-200 m across), densely populated by beds of giant clams (probably calyptogena). Other vent-specific fauna are also present, including crabs, snails, sulfide worms, scale worms, limpettes, etc. The clam beds sit on a crust of hydrothermally baked and indurated, sulfidic, hyaloclastite-rich muds. The mineralization consists mainly of fine-grained disseminated pyrite and amorphous Fe-sulfides. A second, much larger cone at a depth of 1,070 m is capped by massive vesicular lavas which are intensely fractured and mineralized. A C-CORE study on behalf of the government of Newfoundland identified the inner continental shelf off northeast Newfoundland as having a relatively higher potential for hosting placer gold than other parts of the inner shelf. Under the auspices of the Canada-Newfoundland Cooperation Agreement on Mineral Development, the Geological Survey of Canada conducted a three-year project to map the distribution of surficial sediments and the abundance of placer minerals (particularly gold) from White Bay to Cape Freels. Much of the study area is a fjord coast, with steep rocky slopes and scattered gravel beaches. The extreme east, from Hamilton Sound to Cape Freels, has a wide, shallow inner shelf, sandy beaches, and extensive coastal dunes. Relative sea level was high in the late glacial period. It has fallen continuously in the west, but in the east it dropped to -19 m, before rising to within several metres of the present level by 3 ka. In terms of surficial sediments and processes, five zones are identified: (1) Deep offshore deep basins that contain thick postglacial mud overlying glacialmarine gravelly sandy mud. This zone is below a depth of 370 m in White Bay, 300 m in the Notre Dame Basin. 2) Basin transition zone in which the sea bed has been eroded by currents, so that glacialmarine sediments are exposed in places. Winnowing has formed an uppermost layer of muddy gravel. There is a slight potential for enhanced levels of fine particulate gold, but the gold would not be exploitable. (3) Iceberg impacted zone Above 200 m the keels of icebergs impact the sea bed, causing furrowing and pitting. Furrows predominate in deeper areas, and pits are concentrated at the inner boundary of this zone. Iceberg turbates have developed in shallow waters (60-100 m). Combined with winnowing, iceberg turbation could enhance the potential for concentration of fine particulate gold, but not into economic quantities. 4) Wave dominated zone Above approximately 60 m the sea-bed sediments are highly mobile due to waves, currents, and iceberg impact. Welina mai to the 40th Underwater Mining Institute, UMI 2011 - Marine Minerals: Recent Innovations in Technology. Since the first conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1970, the UMI Founder Professor Robby Moore always insisted on actively seeking the participation of industry, academia, and government. History has proven the wisdom of this approach, which is probably the key to its survival for so many years. The UMI is very much influenced by the cyclical pressures of the minerals commodity markets. When minerals demand and prices are rising rapidly, industrial participation in the Institute dominates the agenda, and participants share optimistic and aggressive views of the commercial prospects of the day. When metals prices are falling and world economies lethargic, academic experts continue to provide guidance and breakthroughs in the concepts and practices of exploration, technology, and environmental protection. Throughout the ups and downs, government participants provide a stabilizing force with conservative and environmentally sensitive policy statements, patient development efforts with long-term objectives, authoritative resource assessments and, sometimes, much needed regulatory clarity.

This study was investigated about physico-chemical parameter such as water temperature, salinity, inorganic nutrients and total organic carbon (TOC). CTD (Model: Sea-Bird 911 Plus) castings were carried out on two transects in the northeast equatorial Pacific Ocean. As a part of the Korea Deep-sea Environment Study (KODES), inorganic nutrients and TOC were determined at 41 stations located from 131° to 136°W along 10.5°N and from 17° to 5°N along 131.5°W (Fig. 1). We particularly chose KODES Long-term Monitoring Station (St. KOMO) to observe for the annually environmental baseline study in the contract area. [ ]

Venting on ultraslow spreading ridges is far more abundant then previously predicted, and the discrepancy between observed and predicted vent field density may imply that non-magmatic heat sources are common along these ridges (Baker and German, 2004; Escartin et al., 2008; Rona et al., 2010; German et al., 2016). In this study we have estimated the flux from two hydrothermal vent sites situated on the slow to ultraslow spreading Mohns Ridge at the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge system (AMOR). The flux estimates have been made using the primordial isotope 3He in the non-buoyant plume above the Loki’s Castle vent field at the northern termination of the Mohns Ridge, and from the Jan Mayen vent fields area situated close to the southern termination of the ridge. Primordial 3He enters the oceans through degassing and mixing with hydrothermal fluids eventually to be discharged at the ocean floor primarily at hydrothermal vent sites and submarine volcanic eruptions (e.g. Clarke et al., 1969; Lupton and Craig, 1981; Lupton, 1998). Once introduced into the water column the concentration will only decrease by dilution due to its conservative behavior in the water column. Water column samples were collected using a CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) probe (911plus Seabird) with a Niskin water bottle rosette. The water column above the Jan Mayen vent fields (JMVF) was sampled in the years 2006, 2011, 2012 and 2013 (82 samples) and the water column above the Loki’s Castle vent field was sampled in the years 2007, 2008 and 2009 (116 samples).

"This paper explores the option of direct reduction smelting of the nodules from the German license area in the equatorial NE Pacific in a submerged arc furnace (SAF). An optimized slag design is proposed to separate the larger Mn-bearing stream from the valuable metals (i.e. Ni, Cu, Co, Mo). The slag optimization allows a maximum of Mn to be retained in the manganese-silicate slag on the one hand and a maximized metal recovery in a FeNiCuCo alloy on the other. This way, the goal is to make use of the complete nodules (“zero-waste”) instead of extracting only the metals Ni, Cu, and Co, which make up about 3 wt%. The process closely relates to the “Inco Process” by the Ocean Management Inc. (OMI) of the late 1970s, which was a consortium of INCO (International Nickel Company, CAN; today Vale Canada), Preussag AG & Metallgesellschaft AG (GER), DOMCO (JPN), and Sedco (USA). However, the manganese containing slag is investigated in more detail to recover FeMn, FeMnSi and/or SiMn. To optimize the process modern tools such as thermo-chemical modeling in FactSage™ have been used. [1,2]Polymetallic deep-sea manganese nodules may offer a decreased dependency of raw material imports for Germany and the EU. Currently, four European countries (United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, and France and an Eastern European consortium (InterOcean Metal)) hold exploration licences for these nodules in international waters in the equatorial NE-Pacific. The license areas each cover 75 000 km2 of the seafloor and are located in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ) south east off Hawaii at water-depths between 4000 and 6000 m. The nodules may be used as a resource for industrially important metals such as Cu, Ni, Mn as well as for technology metals like Co, Mo, V and Zn. In 1994 and 1998 the German research vessel R/V Sonne undertook detailed mapping and sampling of the largely uncharted offshore areas of the Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni island chain in the New Ireland Basin of Papua New Guinea. The New Ireland Basin occupies a fore-arc position with respect to the formerly active Manus-Kilinailau arc-trench system and hosts a series of Pliocene to Recent alkaline volcanoes which are built on rifted Miocene sedimentary basement. Several of the volcanoes possess high-level porphyry stocks and active geothermal systems, including gold-depositing hot springs and the giant (40 million ounces) Ladolam gold deposit on the island of Lihir. On the southern flank of Lihir island, a group of three volcanic cones were discovered at water depths from 1.000-1.500 m. The volcanoes are located in a narrow zone of recent seismic activity and elevated heat flow (up to 100 mW/m2). The recovered volcanic rocks consist of fresh alkali-olivine basalts, clinopyroxene-rich basalts (ankaramites), porphyritic phlogopite basalts, and trachybasalts. Unusual gold-rich hydrothermal precipitates were recovered from the summit of the 600 m high Conical Seamount located only about 10 km south of Lihir Island. 1200 kg of sampled material systematically collected with a TV-guided grab from the top plateau (150 x 200 m, 1.050 m water depth) are intensely mineralized with pyrite, marcasite, minor sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, tennantite/tetrahedrite, and orpiment/realgar together with traces of anglesite, cerrusite, and amorphous silica in stockwork-like veins. Bulk samples of the vein mineralization consist mainly of clays, silica, and disseminated sulfides, and have an unusual high gold content ranging from 1.2-44.0 ppm Au. In some of these samples, grains of native gold (about 1 micron in diameter) were identified by SEM in pyrite and sphalerite. The gold-rich material also contains high concentrations of silver (up to 1000 ppm) and typical epithermal elements such as As (2.6 wt.%), Sb (0.2 wt.%), and Hg (34 ppm). Similar to epithermal deposits on land, which usually have only low base metal contents, the samples from Conical Seamount contain only minor amounts of Zn (max. 4.5 wt.%), Cu (2.0 wt.%), and Pb (2.0 wt.%). Many of the samples recovered from Conical Seamount are virtually identical to the gold ore at Lihir.

Diamond production from the reworked beach and river channel gravels along the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia is well known throughout the world, not only for the exceptional quality of the diamonds, but also for the sheer scope of the operations. To date an estimated 140 million carats have been produced from the resource worth some US$40 billion in today&apos;s money terms. It is therefore not surprising that it didn&apos;t take long before the attention turned towards the possible extension of this valuable diamond resource on similar submerged beaches in the adjacent territorial waters of South Africa and Namibia. This has proved to be a very successful move as the marine production in Namibia today constitutes 48% of that country&apos;s total diamond production. Although small scale recovery of diamonds from the sea commenced in the 1950&apos;s, the first large scale production came from the operations of the Texan entrepreneur, Sam Collins, in the 1960&apos;s. The De Beers Group, which took over Sam Collin&apos;s operations in 1969 had all the concession areas, as well as the financial and human resources to tackle the new mining frontier in the correct way by years of data gathering (ie diamond reserves and seafloor terrain studies) before commencing with large scale mining operations in the 1980&apos;s. Those who are familiar with the beach mining operations along the South African and Namibian west coasts will have appreciation for the daunting task of surgically removing the payable portion of diamond deposits from the non-payable material on the one hand, and the complex uneven fractured and gullied bed-rock floor of the deposits on the other hand. Not to mention the additional complexities of large boulders and hard calcretised diamond gravel layers (conglomerate) which are sometimes associated with the deposits. It was a natural development that the sea diamond mining operations were approached with the known information of the land operations, attempting to duplicate land mining operations in the sea, but taking cognisance of the variations of the terrain in the different areas. For instance, we encounter the following variations, and combinations, off the Namibian Coast. ? Close inshore - holocene sand cover often masks large areas of potentially diamondiferous gravels. ? Various natural, commercial, engineering and operational factors govern the evolution of approaches taken in the exploration for Seafloor Massive Sulphides (SMS) and in delineating the resource. These stages are prerequisites to the proposed mining of SMS deposits. This paper presents and analyses these factors from the view of an SMS exploration company that is pioneering the exploration of this rich alternative source of zinc, copper and gold. Current exploration practices developed by Marine Scientific Research (MSR) workers for SMS deposits are expected to give way to industry-generated methods as the SMS exploration industry gathers momentum. The exploration process falls into three phases that are described below: Prospecting (locating targets), Indicating Resources, and Measuring Mineral Resources Considerable streamlining of the SMS exploration process will accelerate the rate of discovery. The economics of SMS mining are projected to be superior to comparable terrestrial mining operations in both operating cash cost and capital terms.

Analysis of ground and airborne radiometric measurements in the Saquarema region (Rio de Janeiro) provides new insights into the breakdown and transport of mineral aggregates containing monazites, under sub-tropical weathering conditions. The breakdown process, accompanied by loss of low-density clay fractions in weathered materials is considered responsible for the observed patterns in relative enrichment of thorium and uranium along the migration paths of radionuclides. The characteristic features of these patterns provide clues as to the time and distance scales associated with processes of weathering and erosion. It is also possible to determine approximate locations of concentrations of accessory minerals. In this context, we advance the hypothesis that large under-water monazite deposits may be present along the offshore sand banks, in the coastal region of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Brothers volcano, in the southern Kermadec Arc, is host to two hydrothermal vent fields with very different geology, permeability, vent fluid compositions and mineralogy (see de Ronde et al. and Ditchburn et al. this volume). The NW caldera site contains mineral deposits (sulfide chimneys and crusts), which are either Cu-rich (?magmatic?) or, more commonly, Zn-rich (?epithermal?). The lower cone site, in contrast, is characterized by native sulfur mounds and spires. It has been proposed (see de Ronde et al. this volume) that the metals, especially Cu and possibly also Au, enter the hydrothermal system via injection and degassing of magma and/or the dissolution of metal-rich glasses. They are then transported rapidly upwards via magmatic volatiles along long (c. 2.5 km), narrow (c. 300 m diameter) pipes, consistent with evidence of vent fluids forming at higher than hydrostatic pressures, at relatively shallow depths. The NW caldera and cone sites may represent stages along a continuum between magmatic-hydrothermal and water/rock-dominated end-members. In this context, investigation of melt inclusions in conjunction with other geochemical and petrological research was carried out to ascertain the metal transporting conditions that may have led to mineral deposition and ore formation. Sixteen melt inclusions in plagioclase were analyzed for their chemical compositions from a typical cone dacite sample using LA-ICPMS at the University of Tasmania. The inclusions are typically glassy and commonly occur with other inclusions such as apatite, clinopyroxene, zircon, magnetite, sulfides and/or low-density fluids (Fig. 1). Major (XRF) and trace element (ICPMS) analyses were performed on whole rock samples collected during the 2005 Shinkai 6500 expedition. Haase et al., (2006) has also reported EPMA glass analyses from cone dacites, which may be used for comparison (Table 1). [ ]

Manganese nodules on deep ocean floors have continuously received attention as potential sources for strategic metals such as Co, Ni, Cu, and Mn, due to their vast distribution and relatively higher metal concentrations (Mero, 1965; Cronan, 1980). Several registered Pioneer Investors have already identified promising sites in deep-sea regions for manganese nodule mining (ISA, 1998), and appropriate mining technologies have been developed during the last thirty years by the international consortium and several nations (Welling, 1981; Kaufman et al., 1985; Bath, 1989; Charles et al., 1990; Yang and Wang, 1997; Yamada and Yamazaki, 1998; Hong and Kim, 1999; Muthunayagam and Das, 1999). The mining feasibility for manganese nodules, including an economic evaluation, has been examined in detail by some researchers (Andrews et al., 1983; Hillman and Gosling, 1985; Charles et al., 1990; Soreide et al., 2001).

Hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts are ubiquitous in the ocean basins and play an important role in marine mineral-deposit research because of their widespread occurrence and high concentrations of valuable and rare metals. Directed research, which started in the last quarter of the 20th century, has provided significant results, with substantial amounts of data produced on Fe-Mn crusts structure, composition, and distribution in the global ocean. Detailed study of several seamounts has given confidence about the scale of Fe-Mn crust development and their characteristics. Now, commercial interests gain more and more attention. However, at the same time some theoretical questions related to Fe-Mn crust history including controls on metal sources and concentrations have not yet been answered. Here, we present the overview of age, composition, distribution, and geological setting of hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts from Pacific and Atlantic seamounts and discuss the geological evolution and conditions that led to the formation of potentially economic concentrations of metals. The age, composition, and distribution of Fe-Mn crusts in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans were determined by using a Fe-Mn deposits database compiled from our original data, published papers, published databases, and other international sources. Comparative analysis of Fe-Mn deposits from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans shows that there are similarities in basic characteristics of crust formation in both oceans. Simultaneously, there are significant differences in the scale of Fe-Mn crust distribution and composition that can be explained by differences in geological settings and characteristics of the deposition environment.

"SUMMARYThis paper describes challenges faced when executing a programme of monitoring to measure the dynamics of currents and sediment plumes at a seamount and the solutions identified to deliver the measurements. The study site was the Tropic Seamount, which extends some 3300m above the surrounding seabed and is found at the southern limit of the Canary Island Seamount Province. The purpose of the study, which forms part of the Marine E-tech project, was to provide information on the interaction of flows with the seamount and to assess the behaviour of sediment plumes that could be generated from potential seabed mining operations targeting the recovery of ferromanganese crusts. Since the crest of the seamount is submerged to a depth of 1000m, much of the work was undertaken using remotely operated and autonomous vehicles supported by measurements from the surface vessel. Despite only limited information on currents being available for planning purposes, the combination of short term forecasting using a 3-dimesional hydrodynamic model of the study area coupled with the collection and analysis of reconnaissance data collected during the first phase of measurement activities made it possible to plan and execute a number of detailed hydrodynamic experiments on the seamount crest. The results of these experiments have advanced the understanding of the behaviour of sediment plumes in the deep ocean and will ultimately improve our ability to manage the impacts which may arise from deep sea mining operations."
