The Broken Hill orebody within the leases of ZC Mines is still a major lead-silver-zinc resource after over 80 years of mining. It illustrates particular problems encountered in resource and reserve estimation in old mines. The six mined ore lenses are characterised by three features: ò complex external geometry, ò high internal grade variability, ò bimodal grade distribution. The high grade 3, 2 and 1 lenses and B lode have sharp external contacts but contain some low grade internal zones. By contrast A lode is of lower average grade and comprises an extensive but geometrically variable mineralised zone within which are numerous irregular bodies of high and medium grade ore. Geological factors are the main source of variability in reserve estimation, which historically has been conservative. For many years the geological resource tonnage has been maintained at a level sufficient to make up for extraction but at a gradually declining grade. Using a geological block cut off grade of 10% Pb + Zn the present in situ resource is 53.8 Mt grading 8% lead and 13% zinc. Using empirical cut factors a "recoverable reserve" is derived from this large geological tonnage. There is some doubt that the "recoverable reserve" is conservative enough to reflect mining reality. The most sensitive indicator of forthcoming change in total resource or insufficient drilling and development is given by changes in the tonnage and grade of possible ore from which the proved and probable categories are derived. Examples are given to show that where reserves are drill indicated, the delineation required for proved ore reserves must be enhanced to achieve final stope design. The move in recent years to greater emphasis on non entry mining and lower recovery of in situ material poses a dilemma for a mine which has practised 100% recovery for much of its past. The need for a realistic reserve assessment in current terms needs to be balanced against the fullest possible geological knowledge of the resource to cater for future technological developments.

The Townsville prospect is situated approximately 4 km north of the Ok Tedi copper-gold mine in Western Province, Papua New Guinea. Drilling in the 1990s delineated a resource of >1 Moz of gold within shallow, skarn breccia-hosted mineralisation associated with quartz-carbonate infill, together with pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, galena, tennantite-tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, and a variety of Au-, Ag- and Bi-telluride minerals. The deepest of these historical holes (TVL034) also intersected copper-gold-silver mineralisation more than 100 m below the gold-rich zone that is associated with calc-silicate skarn breccia. Although copper-gold-silver mineralisation in DDHTVL034 is associated with clinopyroxene-rich skarn, it was also noted that garnet in the skarn breccia became progressively darker in colour with depth, ranging from green at shallow levels to dark red-brown at depth. This indicated that the skarn breccia is zoned, with more proximal garnet skarn at depth possibly indicating an association with porphyry-style copper-gold mineralisation.Based on this skarn zonation model, recent drilling at the Titan prospect, located approximately 500 m south of TVL034, was targeted at potential copper-gold silver mineralisation beneath shallow skarn breccia-hosted gold mineralisation. DDHTVL 081 intersected 46 m at 6.36 g/t Au from 68 m and 80.7 m and 1.67 per cent Cu, 1.27 g/t Au and 20.32 g/t Ag from 184 m. The Central Victorian Goldfield is a world-class field located in Victoria, Australia. It is currently undergoing a revival through activities in the Bendigo, Ballarat, Tarnagulla, Maldon, Castlemaine and other fields. Sediment-hosted auriferous gold-quartz reefs that are structurally and geometrically complex dominate the region. To date, no remote methods have been developed to assist in the targeting of the discrete high-grade oreshoots that characterise the mineralisation. An understanding of the structural setting and controls, and thus likely frequency of repetition of oreshoots remains the main exploration tool. Gold within the reefs is generally characterised by both its coarse nature (>100 up to 10 000 microns) and erratic distribution; as a result, most of the Victorian deposits are classed as high- to extreme-nugget effect systems. This characteristic ensures that mineralisation is very challenging to explore, evaluate and exploit. The key issues facing the explorer and miner are related to effective sampling, and definition of geological and grade continuity, and ultimately grade and tonnage. Tonnage can often be estimated to a reasonable level of confidence, whereas the grade estimate generally carries a medium- to high-level of uncertainty. In these deposits, surface diamond drilling alone is generally only able to define an Inferred Mineral Resource, with underground development, closely spaced in-fill drilling and bulk sampling/trial mining required to define Ore Reserves. The extraction of gold from ores is relatively simple, based on the coarse nature and hence amenability to gravity recovery. Ground conditions and the need for in-stope grade control (eg mapping, sampling etc), generally point toward mechanised cut-and-fill as the primary stoping method in the region. To potential investors this style of mineralisation has been viewed as high risk, because of the associated low confidence in the grade estimate, general paucity of Ore Reserves at mining start-up and need for underground development at the Feasibility Stage.

The Sand Queen gold mine is a typical Archaean narrow, high-grade gold quartz lode deposit within a shear hosted system. Initial mining during 1904 - 1948 produced 181 659 ounces of gold from 248 564 tonnes of ore milled at an average production grade of 22.7 g/t Au, which equates to a minimum of 750 ounces per vertical metre. The current mining operation is using the old Sand Queen main shaft to access the Sand George deposit, which is a narrow quartz lode system discovered in the same shear structure along strike to the south of the Sand Queen mine workings. Current underground resources contain 360 200 tonnes at a grade of 11.8 g/t Au for 136 500 ounces. Mining is scheduled to produce 20 000 ounces of gold annually. Re-opening of the Sand Queen mine and underground development of the Sand George lodes has revived several grade control issues relevant to a narrow, ænuggettyÆ gold lode mining environment. These include the dependence of assay grade of individual samples upon a number of factors, including how and where a sample is collected, how and where it is analysed, and how grade data is used to estimate an æaverageÆ grade. Ideally, the only way to achieve an acceptable estimate of ætrue gradeÆ is to mine and mill a large parcel of ore (eg >100 tonnes) from each lode or ore type. In a mining operation producing relatively small tonnages from a number of separate ænuggettyÆ gold lodes, availability of resources and operational constraints may preclude intensive sampling for predictive grade control. At the Sand Queen mine, one of the key issues has been to establish a reliable system for estimation of gold grade with which to reconcile milling data. Extensive use has been made of detailed geological data to understand the grade distribution within individual lodes and between lodes, so as not to rely solely on assay results.

This paper presents a brief overview of current bump mechanics theories and pillar design methodologies, and relates these concepts to experiences at two mines located in a north- central Utah coalfield where different pillar designs were used to control mountain bumps. Experiences gained at the first mine demonstrated the successful implementation of a two-entry, 9.8 m (32 ft)-wide, yield-pillar design. A U.S. Bureau of Mines field study quantified the timing of chain pillar yielding and resulting load transfer from the gateroad. In-mine pillar response, although apparently sensitive to site-specific conditions, compared favorably to estimates derived using two yield- pillar design methods. A second study conducted at another mine located in the same district, but subjected to different geologic conditions, documents the unsuccessful attempts to employ progressively narrower three-entry pillar designs based on successes achieved at the first mine site. This second mine never achieved a true yield-pillar design. Use of pillar widths ranging between 9.1 m (30 ft) and 27.4 m (90 ft) always resulted in violent bumps in the tailgate pillars. The pillars were either too large to yield, or too small to support peak operational loads. Hypothetical gateroad systems were evaluated using both analytical and empirical approaches for configurations comprised of two rows of conventional pillars, and systems incorporating both yield and abutment pillars. Analysis concluded that yield pillars less than 6.1 m (20 ft) wide and abutment pillars ranging between 30.5 m (100 ft) and 39.6 m (130 ft) square would be required to achieve a stable gateroad design. However, results of a field study conducted on a two-entry, 36.6 m (120 ft)- wide abutment pillar concluded that abutment pressures from the first panel overrode the pillar, and that a still larger pillar may be required to preclude bumps in the tailgate during second panel mining. Without the benefit of a demonstrated in-mine success, it is not clear which design would ensure elimination of gateroad bumps.

The Golden Gift is a recently discovered deep deposit below the main operating areas of the Stawell Gold Mine. At an early stage of the project, diamond drilling was used to define the mineralisation on sections approximately 100 - 150 m apart. The project economics were sensitive to both grade and tonnage. There were consequently two significant risks on resource quantification: risk on tonnage (ægeological riskÆ); and risk on grade (ægrade riskÆ). The degrees of freedom inherent in the geological model were considered to be potentially high because of wide drill spacing and likely structural complexity. To quantify geological risk three geologists familiar with Stawell mineralisation independently interpreted the deposit. This generated three plausible, different geological volume models. Conditional simulation was then used to quantify grade risk. Conditional simulation requires the user to define input statistics (histogram and variogram model) and a geological envelope. Based on global mean grade of an ordered set of simulations, æpessimisticÆ, æmedianÆ and æoptimisticÆ simulation cases were defined. The result was a 3 x 3 risk matrix with geological risk (the three interpretations) on one axis and grade risk (also three cases) on the other axis. An interesting result was that geological and grade risks were of a similar order of magnitude. Therefore a risk analysis of grade by geostatistical methods within a fixed geological model is of limited value, especially if the drill spacing is wide. After completion of this study, with additional drilling, the geological degrees of freedom at Golden Gift reduced substantially. A second Golden Gift risk study used a refined geological model to build a set of simulations to be used in preliminary mine design. A third simulation study in the deeper parts of the Magdala ore deposit, a well-drilled part of the mine with production history, demonstrates that the geostatistical simulation method used at Golden Gift is a robust and useful tool to quantify grade risk.

Although these subterranean cavities are common to the Broken Hill big lode, yet the Broken Hill Proprietary is the most prolific in their occurrence, loud they have been found of various dimensions almost from the surface down to the lowest levels yet attained in that mine. Many of these vugbs have contined valuable silver, copper and lead deposits, and some have been remarkable for the beautiful forms of crystallization pendant from the roofs and walls, and collected on the floors. The question arises, How are these caverns and fissures in the ore body formed? There are numerous theories more or less feasible, but that the causes are variant is demonstrated beyond doubt. That water in its passage leaving channels, is one ofthe chief factors for their production is assured, and their presence is likewise due to the shrinkage and dropping of the earth from varions causes, to the deposition of material forming ledges overhanging, and thus leaving spaces below, and also to chemical erosion and electrical action both of which latter are constantly at work in reconstructing, segregating and dissolving tlie mineral and metallic constituents of all ore bodies.One of the most remarkable vughs yet discovered in the big mine was that opened up about three months bitek in the' heart of the ironstone body on Block 11, and located about 40 feet below the 100 feet level of Weatherley's stopes, but now destroyed in the progress of work. Probably it was caused by chemical action, the eating out, so to speak, of a soft and soluble portion of the manganic iron, leaving a,hollow about 15 feet long, with a width and height, of say, 6 feet, carpeted with beautiful zinc with a modicum of limeincrustations, apparently produced by the percolation from around the carbonate waters holding these minerals in solution. This cavern was divided into, what might be termed, a double chamber, by big boulders of manganic iron, also coated with an aggregation of small crystals of zinc and lime although the actual proportion of the latter was not determined.

The Resources Boom of the 1960s in Australia provided a strong foundation for AustraliaÆs economic prosperity for the remainder of the twentieth century. In combination with sound economic management, our world-class minerals and energy sector has played a key role in the nationÆs competitiveness, and it has been the major source of our exports since the early 1970s. Even with the emergence since 1990 of major mineral provinces in Latin America and elsewhere, Australia has increased its percentage of world production of several minerals. Between 1990 and 2002, our share of iron ore production rose from 13 per cent to 20 per cent, nickel mine production from eight per cent to 17 per cent, copper mine production from four per cent to seven per cent and zinc mine production from 13 per cent to 17 per cent. Whether this situation will continue during the coming decades motivates the discussion of this reflective paper. The approach is to consider fundamental supply-side and demand-side issues in arriving at a view about the state of the world, the world minerals sector and the Australian resources sector in the coming decades. The argument draws from the experiences of other mature mineral producing countries such as Canada and the United States. In such nations, efficient producers have often sustained competitiveness for extended periods, despite falling grades and other challenging operating conditions. Yet several forces are changing the economic geography of the minerals industry in significant ways. These include the re-emergence of major global mining corporations, the revision of mineral policy in over 100 nations since 1985, the mobility of technology and more efficient transport both for mineral productions and mining professionals. Given these trends the paper argues that the Australian mining industry must continue to change and evolve significantly in the foreseeable future. Its leaders will need to be even more internationally focused if it is to maintain its strong competitive position.

The earliest suggestions that some metallic ore deposits might have resulted from seafloor volcanic exhalation seem to have been those of Elie de Beaumont in 1847 and Henry de la Beche in 1851. In 1885 Tinoco, and Bouglise and Cumenge, independently investigating-.the manto copper deposits of the Boleo district of Baja California, proposed that these had formed on the seafloor by precipitation from "hydrothermal submarine emanations". Some twenty years later the Japanese geologists Kukuchi and Tsujimoto (1904) put forward the idea that the Kuroko ore- bodies were seafloor volcanic sinter deposits and in 1919 this was re-affirmed by Ohashi. In 1909 the English geologists Thomas and MacAllister postulated a similar origin for some of the gold deposits of Mount Morgan in Queensland. Between the wars the great European economic geologists Niggli and Schneiderhohn both clearly recognized a class of seafloor hydrothermal deposits. The idea rose again immediately after the Second World War in a very clear statement by Hegeman in 1948, which was followed by contributions by Ehrenberg and Kraume and their co-workers on the submarine volcanic origin of the Meggen and Rammelsberg orebodies in 1954 and 1955 respectively. In 1955 the present writer, quite unaware of early or contemporary work on volcanic exhalative ore deposits, proposed a volcanic sedimentary/diagenetic origin for the stratiform base metal ores of SE Australia. In doing so the writer emphasized the probable importance of island arc volcanism, suggested that some "metallogenetic regions" of ancient terrains were in fact old island arc systems, that the composition of the ores might be related to the composition of the associated volcanic rocks and that such ores would be tied to volcanic stratigraphy. Ideas on relations between volcanism and stratiform ore genesis have thus been evolving over.a period of some 140 years and, beginning with the observations on Baja California in 1882, work round the rim of the Pacific has made an important contribution over a period of more than 100 years.

Exploration requires substantial capital, and is an extremely risky business (only 1 in 100 prospects ever becomes a mine). The average lead time, that is the time between discovery and production, varies from around two years for a gold mine, to 15 years for a lead/zinc mine. Since it takes years to find, prove and develop most ore bodies, exploration must be carried out years ahead of the depletion of existing deposits. Investors in exploration are exposed to risk for long periods before knowing whether they will receive a return on the funds invested. The risk, high-cost, uncertainty and long lead times involved in exploration make it an aspect of commerce that most managers and investors find difficult to rationalise or understand. Nevertheless, it is a given that the long-term survival of the mining sector depends on discovery of new mineral deposits, however the immediacy of the need to find or acquire new mineral deposits in order to compete and prosper in the industry is less well understood. This paper examines the commercial realities which underlie exploration for new mineral deposits. The first and foremost reason for exploration is to maintain or increase depleting ore reserves which are the asset base of mining, but there are other compelling commercial reasons for exploring, and these are: to maintain return on investment, to achieve growth or create wealth through discoveries which lead tonew mining ventures, to remain competitive in the industry, to diversify, and to control raw material source for mineral processing and/ormarketing ventures. Exploration is necessary for survival of the industry, and also for survival of organisations competing in the industry. The organisations which discover the best orebodies are in the best position to compete, and mining organisations which fail to find or acquire new mineral deposits rapidly become uncompetitive and unable to maintain return on shareholdersÆ investment.

The Golden Blocks Goldfield is located in the Slaty Creek area,North West Nelson, about 20 km west of Collingwood. Alluvial gold was discovered in Slaty Creek in 1861. Gold was mined from quartz veins up to 1.5 m thick at nine mines from the 1890s until the closure of the Aorangi Mine in 1911. Total production from the Golden Blocks Goldfield is estimated at 46 000 ounces of gold. The Aorangi Mine was the largest mine, with a recorded production of 27 978 ounces of gold at an average grade of 36 g/t. Quartz veins containing gold and sparse sulphide mineralisation occur in a slightly metamorphosed, complexly deformed over-turned sequence of Lower Ordovician sandstones and shales. Primary gold mineralisation is associated with intensely deformed zones that occur near or at carbonaceous shale and sandstone contacts. Some eighty-five percent of all gold production (39 000 ounces) came from four mines confined to the stratigraphically lowest, most widespread shale unit. The quartz veins exhibit textures consistent with a hydraulic fracturing mode of vein formation with fissure infill vein types predominating over replacement textures. Stylolites of carbonaceous material and recrystallization features within the veins suggest multiple phases of deformation. The lack of wall rock alteration, and low primary fluid inclusion temperatures of 200¦ - 265¦ indicate that the ore fluids were associated with a low temperature epithermal system. A model consistent with similar mineralisation styles observed in Ordovician sediments from Pacific Rim occurrences is presented. The high grades (up to 100 g/t) mined from the upper levels of several mines suggests supergene enrichment processes associated with the Upper Cretaceous weathering surface. The Golden Blocks Goldfield has had no modern exploration. The most recent exploration was undertaken in the early 1980s. There are known acid intrusives in the area, with potential for the application of new models of intrusive-related gold mineralisation.

Mid-ocean ridges host approximately 65 per cent of about 100 known sites of high-temperature venting and polymetallic sulfide deposits; most of them are located at the East Pacific Rise (EPR), while more diverse mineralisation styles occur at the Mid-Atlantic Rise (MAR). Seafloor hydrothermal activity at the EPR are related to MORB while different substrates, including MORB and ultramafic intrusive rocks, are associated with æblack smokersÆ at the MAR. Depth of hydrothermal activity ranges from 0.7 to 4.3 km. High-temperature vents precipitating Cu-Fe sulfides (chalcopyrite and isocubanite, rare bornite), pyrrhotite, pyrite (¦ marcasite), and sphalerite, and low-temperature edifices precipitating marcasite (with pyrite), sphalerite, barite, andsubordinate chalcopyrite (pyrrhotite and isocubanite are absent) occur in both environments. There are considerable differences in Fe, Zn, Cu, Ag, Au and trace element contents in ores and in theFeS contents in Zn-sulfides in these deposits. Acomparison with anhydrite and sulfide minerals precipitating from modern black smoker fluids sulfide reveals many similarities but also some important differences. Fluids with salinity values above and below that of seawater at 400¦C down to 130 - 170¦C deposited sulfide minerals. Mantle-derived He prevails in fluids trapped by sulfides in EPR 9¦N and 21¦N hydrothermal systems. Hydrothermal fluids in MAR and back-arc systems are richer in radiogenic 4He. The sulfur isotope composition varies in the different hydrothermal fields and within zones of a chimney. EPR sulfides display narrower range of d34S values, while MAR and back-arc sulfides can bedepleted and enriched in the heavier d34S isotope. The most important finding is that fluid temperature, salinity, R/Ra ratios and d34S values ranged more significantly in the polymetallic sulfide deposits than when measured directly on venting fluids. THE reduction of iron from the ferric to the ferrous state prior to its titration by permanganate or dichromate may give erroneous results in the presence of other reducible metals such as titanium. Stannous chloride and metallic zinc both reduce tetravalent titanium to a lower form, and so increase the consumption of the oxidizing standard: solution. Sulphuretted hydrogen and sulphurous acid do not reduce titanium, but are slow in action and troublesome to manipulate.Sulphuretted hydrogen is considered to be the best reducing agent for iron in the presence of titanium.* In the method to be described the advantages of the H 2S reduction are retained without the disadvantages of using the gas. The reduction is carried out by the action of a metallic sulphide having a solubility product of such a value that the sulphide iom, are utilized as fast as they are formed, and but little free sulphuretted hydrogen is given off.Cadmium sulphide was the first to be tried, but its solubility product (3.6 x 10 - 2~)t was apparently too low. The reduction was satisfactory, but the excess was very difficult to remove. Zinc sulphide (S.P. = 1.2 x 10 - 23) was found to be quite satisfactoryin both respects. The zinc sulphide is preferably used in the form of an emulsion prepared from pure zinc sulphate as follows: About 100 grm. of ZnS047H20 is dissolved in 2 litres of water. H2S is passed until no further precipitate is obtained, the acid formed being barely neutralized from time to time by the addition of ammonia. The precipitation of the sulphide in a slightly acid solution gives a finer emulsion than that prepared in an alkaline solution, and any iron present remains dissolved. The precipitate is allowed to settle and the clear liquid decanted. The precipitate is then shaken up with more water, acidified with a little sulphuric acid, allowed to...

Metallic sulfide minerals present in most gold ores, Morila gold ore included, often decompose under typical gold leaching conditions. The reactions and their products consume oxygen and sodium cyanide, consequently competing for oxygen and cyanide used in gold dissolution. The resultant effect is to reduce both the kinetics of gold dissolution and overall extraction efficiencies. The present paper discusses results obtained from plant data analysis and laboratory work investigating the problem of higher than expected consumption of sodium cyanide at Morila Mine Gold Plant. Cyanide consumption at the Morila Mine Gold Plant had been consistently running at 46 per cent higher than the expected value without any corresponding increase in gold recovery. In fact, plant data analysis showed an inverse relationship between cyanide consumption and grind, as well as cyanide consumption and gold recovery. Experimental and plant data analysis indicated that better control of the [CN-]/[O2] ratio is necessary for the efficient use of reagents and achievement of higher gold recoveries. Careful control of this ratio at a minimum of eight enabled the reduction of sodium cyanide consumption by 200 g/t, that is, from 650 g/t to 450 g/t. Coupling these experimental conditions with the addition of lead nitrate at 100 g/t improved the overall gold recovery to 93 per cent compared to the average plant recovery of 90.2 per cent over a six-month period. This improvement was also reflected in the leaching kinetics where 70 per cent gold extraction was achieved after four hours, as compared to 59 per cent in the absence of lead nitrate addition. Also of great importance is the fact that the combination of hydrogen peroxide and oxygen gave inferior performance relative to either of the two reagents used separately. This scenario presents an opportunity for excluding hydrogen peroxide, an expensive reagent, and focusing on improving the oxygen addition system to boost dissolved oxygen concentration in the plant.

This paper describes modelling studies of the flotation cells used by BHP Billiton Nickel West Ltd in the slimes circuit at Mt Keith. The aim is to achieve a better understanding of the hydrodynamic limitations in the existing cells to improve nickel recovery. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations have been performed on the 100 m3 mechanically-stirred cells. The data produced by the simulations include velocity vectors, gas holdup distribution, solids distribution, bubble size, superficial gas velocity and turbulent parameters. These results have been checked and found to match hydrodynamic measurements at the plant. An analysis of the data found that one of the limitations in fine particle recovery was related to the air bubbles discharged with the tailing. The air in the discharge was caused by the high viscosity of the pulp. In the presence of fine particles, the pulp exhibits high viscosity with a yield stress. The increased drag due to high viscosity caused the bubbles to rise more slowly up the cell. This results in a significant hold-up of bubbles, some of which report to the tailing with associated loss of valuable minerals. A parametric CFD study of the operating variables shows that less air would be discharged in the tailing by decreasing the following: air flow rate,pulp density,stirring speed, andfrother addition. Simulation results indicate that these changes would cause a lowering of the air hold up in the cell especially near the discharge area. Predictions of the bubble-particle attachment rates under various operating conditions have also been calculated. Although it is possible to increase attachment rates by increasing stirring speed or by increasing pulp density, the amount of air discharged and the amount of nickel loss through the tailing will also increase. The project showed that CFD modelling is a powerful tool for studying hydrodynamic effects of bubble-particle interactions in flotation cells.

In July 1994 the Premier, John Fahey MP, announced that the New South Wales Government would make available a total of $40 million over six years in new funding for the Department of Mineral Resources. These funds are to be applied directly to the generation of regional geological and geophysical information. The Government's initiative known as `Discovery 2000', is aimed at providing a major boost to the exploration industry. The Government expects new discoveries to be made and new mines to be developed because of the initiative and, perhaps, the first ever commercial oil or gas production in New South Wales. The Government's return will come from increased economic activity, and from the increased royalty return from higher levels of production. Quality information is the key to successful exploration. In the highly competitive business of mineral and petroleum exploration high quality regional geological and geophysical information improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of the area selection or project generation process. Using the `needle in the hay stack' analogy, Discovery 2000 will vastly improve industry's chances of finding the haystacks. It is up to the mineral and petroleum industries to find their respective `needles'. Careful target area selection is probably the most critical factor in mineral exploration. The ability to select the most prospective areas, or to identify prospectivity that others have failed to recognise, can make all the difference between success and failure. Government geological surveys clearly have a crucial role to play in providing the geoscientific information infrastructure that companies must have if they are to make the discoveries this country needs to pay its way in the world. It is the regional information generated by Governments that sets the scene for efficient exploration. This regional information includes regional aeromagnetics and radiometrics and gravity, regional geological mapping and tectonic analysis, and geoscientific databases. The New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources (by various names) has been providing such information for over 100 years and has led the way in many aspects of the generation and dissemination of geological, geophysical and metallogenic Information.

Alcoa of Australia operates three Alumina refineries in the South West of Western Australia at Kwinana adjacent to the South suburbs of Perth and at Pinjarra and Wagerup in rural settings 100 and 150 kilometres south of Perth respectively (see Figure 1). Alcoa's total alumina production is currently around five million tonnes per annum and this will increase to 5.5 million tonnes by early 1990. Further expansion of production is likely if current world aluminium demand trends continue. Alcoa's refineries utilise bauxite mined in the nearby Darling Range which is low grade by world standards having around 32 % by weight extractable alumina (by comparison Weipa bauxite yields around 55% alumina). This means that for every tonne of alumina produced two tonnes of solid wastes remain and therefore while we in Western Australia can boast of hosting the largest alumina industry in the world with around 18% of total world production we suffer from having the lion's share or 40% of the world's bauxite residues to dispose of. In its Western Australian setting the management of these residues in a manner which is acceptable to the community creates many challenges. These are primarily due to the mass and volume of waste produced, its chemical and physical characteristics and the environmental features of the local area including close proximity of neighbours, competing land uses and the presence of natural resources such as surface water and groundwater. In addition the trend towards more stringent statutory environmental controls and greater political and community awareness of environmental issues means that we must be able to demonstrate improvements that will reduce the considerable adverse impacts of past practices. Of course we must also try to keep the overall cost of residue disposal as low as possible to maintain our competitiveness with refineries which may have much smaller volumes of waste to dispose of and less environmental constraints.

The Peko copper orebody is associated with a body of magnetite rock which it has partly replaced. The primary ore averages about 9 per cent. copper and 4 dwt. gold per ton and locally IS much richer. It consists essentially of chalcopyrite and unreplaced magnetite, with lesser amounts of pyrite, marcasite, pyrrhotite, cobaltite, bismuthinite, native bismuth and native gold. The earliest formed mineral is wolfram, and the latest formed is goethite, so that the temperature of deposition ranged from about 5000 C. to 1650 C. or lower.Oxidation extends to 270 ft., which is 100 ft. below the present water level. The oxidized ore consists of cuprite and native copper, and has replaced more or less massive chalcocite of a former zone of secondary sulphide enrichment. The present zone of secondary sulphide enrichment extends from about 270 ft. to 310 ft. depth.INTRODUCTIONThe Peko mine is about 6 miles south-west of Tennant Creek township in the Northern Territory, adjacent to a small outcrop of hematite rock that projects above an otherwise featureless "bull-dust" fiat.The copper-gold orebody being developed in this mine did not outcrop. It was first detected in 1950 by a surface diamond-drill hole (DDH.1), which intersected primary copper ore at a depth of 400 to 425 ft. This ore contained from 4 to 11 per cent. copper and 1 to 25 dwt. gold per ton. Since then a shaft has been sunk, and crosscuts and development drives have been opened on the 210..ft., 300-ft. and 400-ft. levels, which are also connected by winzes. Two diamond drill holes sunk from the 400-ft. level have intersected theorebody at about 450 to 460 ft., and a winze from the 400-ft. level intersected the lode from 445 to 500 ft. At this point it is 54 ft. wide, and averages 9 per cent. copper. More recently an inclined surface drill hole (Peko No. 1) has cut the lode at 856 ft. to 921 ft., equivalent to a vertical depth...

The behaviour of iron ore granules in the feeding process of sintering is significantly influenced by the material properties of the granulated mix. Therefore, the measurement of key material properties of the iron ore granulated mix is indispensable prior to the simulation of the sintering process based on the discrete element method (DEM). In this paper, three key property parameters of the iron ore granulated mix, apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient, were measured in laboratory-scale experiments. For different sintering processes, the moisture content of the granulated mix normally varies according to the specific requirements for granule size distribution and operating conditions. Therefore, understanding the effect of moisture content on the property parameters of iron ore granules is very helpful in accurately determining the property parameters for DEM simulation work. In this paper, six groups of iron ore granule samples with six levels of moisture contents were prepared through granulation and the trends in apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient with the increase of moisture content were plotted and analysed based on the measurement results. The results show that as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent, the apparent density decreases from about 3000 to 2800 kg/m3. With moisture increasing within the same range, the elastic modulus first decreases from over 200 MPa to below 100 MPa and then reaches a relative constant value of about 40 MPa at higher moisture contents. Rolling friction coefficients are measured using two methods with both indicating a similar trend, with the rolling friction coefficient first decreasing and then rising as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent. Gold is extracted by cyanidation of a sulphide-rich concentrate at Macraes mine, and after cyanidation, the concentrate is discharged to tailings impoundments. The concentrate tailings were discharged to a dedicated concentrate impoundment from 1989 to 1993, afterwhich they were blended with the flotation tailings. Since mid-1998, concentrate tailings have been redirected to the dedicated concentrate impoundment. The concentrate tailings contain up to 1 ppm gold, and will be reprocessed in the future. However, it is a regulatory requirement that a contingency plan be in place to rehabilitate the concentrate tailings should the mine operation cease for any reason. Initial predictions suggested that the sulphide-rich tailings would oxidise and acidify, creating a potential long term environmental problem. Investigations of the state of the tailings after 4 years show that these predictions were overly conservative. Only minor oxidation has occurred in the upper 2 metres of the tailings where the pH has locally dropped from 10 (discharge condition) to between 7 and 8. Below 2 metres, the tailings are essentially unchanged from their deposition state. The low rate of change in the tailings is due to their very low permeability which in turn is a consequence of the fine grain size (ca. 15 ¦m). Dewatering is extremely slow, and incursion of oxygenated water is negligible. Calculations suggest that water movement over 30 m will take at least 100 years and possibly 1000 years. The contingency plan is to capitalise on the very low permeability and keep the tailings from drying with a semipermeable cap. A layer of limestone will be added to the top of the tailings, beneath the cap, to enhance alkalinity of any percolating water. If acidification does occur, contrary to expectations, any acid produced will be neutralised by underlying calcite-bearing schist, schist in the concentrate impoundment wall, and the flotation tailings immediately downstream. In addition, dilution by alkaline ground and surface waters would further ameliorate any acidic discharge.
